2015 INDIAN HEALTH CARE RESOURCE CENTER OF TULSA Annual Report
IHCRC 2015 1
The mission of Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa, Inc. (IHCRC) is to provide quality, comprehensive health care to Tulsa area Indian people in a culturally sensitive manner that promotes good health, well being, and harmony. The vision of IHCRC is to eliminate health disparities, expand innovative familyfocused practices, and promote an embracing approach to care that strengthens physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness within the Indian community. The long-term health promotional goal is to improve general health status and reduce the incidence and severity of chronic disease by engaging the Indian community in ongoing health promotion, prevention, and disease management activities. The Medicine Wheel teaches us the four distinctive and powerful elements of fire, water, earth, and air are a part of the physical world. Each of the elements is to be respected equally for its gift of life. The wheel also teaches us we have four aspects to our nature – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. To become a well balanced healthy individual, each of these aspects must be equally expressed through the development and use of our will. The wheel is an ancient symbol used by most native people of the Americas. The wheel is used to express holistic, cyclical, and harmonious concepts – the four winds, the four cardinal directions, and other relationships that express balance and interrelationship.

2015 Letter from the President and the CEO Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa is committed in our mission to Tulsa’s Indian community – to provide quality, comprehensive health care to Tulsa area Indian people in a culturally sensitive manner that promotes good health, well-being and harmony. IHCRC’s unique approach integrates medical, vision, dental and behavioral health services to meet the needs of our patients. In an ongoing effort to meet these needs in 2015, we have added a full-time adult psychiatrist and a pediatrician. Additionally, our health education and wellness staff reach out to the Indian community with ongoing health promotion, disease prevention and wellness programs. Preliminary planning for the Phase III Expansion to be located north of our clinic is beginning. This new facility will allow IHCRC to offer additional needed care and services for the Indian community. The property to be built upon is the remaining vacant land owned by IHCRC. As such, it will be important for sound judgment and prudent thought to be given to the additional activities and services that will be of most benefit to IHCRC’s patients. We continue to work on customer service and excellent patient care. Over 1,200 people participated in our bi-annual patient satisfaction survey. Please be assured every survey is read and evaluated. Patients responded they were having a hard time scheduling appointments. We are making
changes and hope patients are having an easier time with this process. Thanks to everyone who took the time to provide this valuable feedback. Youth Summer Wellness Camps were once again exciting and well attended, providing sports skills, team building, and cultural activities. Thanks to our many donors who make the camp experience possible for these great kids. Over 800 adults, youth and children participated in our eighth annual Restoring Harmony Powwow. This year’s “Creating Balance” theme focused on the importance of balancing mind, body and spirit. Mark your calendars now for the annual fundraiser, Dance of the Two Moons on Saturday, March 12th, benefiting our health and wellness programs. “Mirrored Moons” promises to be the most elegant disco party you’ve ever experienced!

Thanks to our generous donors, the 25th Anniversary of the Dance of the Two Moons raised more money than ever before netting almost $142,000.
Society of the Medicine Wheel The Society of the Medicine Wheel is IHCRC’s special annual giving club. Named for the ancient symbol used by most Native people to express holistic, cyclical, and harmonious concepts, members of the club become a vital part of the health and wellbeing of Tulsa’s Native community.
Native Strong (Notah Begay III Foundation) The IHCRC Native Strong program, funded through a one year grant from the Notah Begay III Foundation, works to reduce the number of youth with diabetes by teaching healthy lifestyles. Native Strong includes group and individual fitness, exercise, and cooking classes for youth and their families.
CHANGE Program (American Cancer Society/ Walgreens) In November 2014, IHCRC received a two year grant from the American Cancer Society/Walgreens to increase the number of IHCRC patients completing colorectal screening. Breast Health Services for American Indian Women (Susan G. Komen Tulsa) In April, IHCRC received a grant from the Susan G. Komen Tulsa Affiliate to help reduce health disparities in breast cancer screening and treatment for American Indian women.
