About the Organization Since 1976, Indian Health Care Resource Center has been dedicated to improving the health of Tulsa’s American Indian population. Over 40 years after its inception, Indian Health Care Resource Center (IHCRC) remains dedicated to its mission of providing quality, comprehensive healthcare to Tulsa area Indian people in a culturally sensitive manner that promotes good health, well-being and harmony. IHCRC’s commitment to quality is evident in its accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Centers (AAAHC) and its certification as a Medical Home by AAAHC. IHCRC’s services are specifically designed to address one of the most important aspects of care for American Indians, attentiveness to the four elements of an individual’s nature (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual). This focus on the whole person requires a complete integration of services, including those that positively affect behavioral as well as physical health. IHCRC’s medical home model of care allows patients to see the same care team on every visit. The wide array of integrated services operates through a multidisciplinary, patientcentered, medical home model of care. The one-stop shop houses: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2019 Letter from the President and the CEO As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Carmelita’s service as CEO, Indian Health Care Resource Center is grateful for another wonderful year. IHCRC is honored to have been chosen as one of Oklahoma’s Best Places to Work. Those who work at the clinic already understand this but we are happy to share our love of IHCRC with all of Oklahoma. Our 80s theme Dance of the Two Moons was a HUGE success and preparations are well underway for the 30th anniversary of the event in 2020. This year we are pleased to recognize our Circle of Life Community Partner and ongoing Media Partner Griffin Communications (Channel 6). Thanks to their generosity many people who need our services now know our name. Our first Native American Youth Summit was held in August. More than 150 youth attended the first summit. Planning is already in full swing for the 2020 Summit to be held in the fall. We are grateful for our corporate partners, ONE Gas, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, and Williams and our tribal partner the Muscogee (Creek) Nation for helping make the day a huge success.

While our youth are important to our future, we also recognize the gifts of our seniors. The new Coffee Hour and Half is one of the most well attended groups IHCRC has to offer. Fifteen to 20 individuals, ages 60 and up gather once a month for games, coffee, and socialization. It is a great way for staff to check-in and to make certain our seniors are doing well. As we prepare for our future and the expansion of our services and the extension of our campus, we remain grateful for those who have paved the way. Thank you for being a part of 2019. In 2019 IHCRC introduced Coffee Hour And A Half, a program designed to connect elders to each other and our services within the clinic over a cup of coffee and games. Currently the program has 15 regular members and continues to grow each month.

I have heard stories from others how they never dreamed they’d be able to complete a 5K, they never saw themselves getting off the couch, they thought they were stuck until they joined our Running Strong Team and all of that changed. They now see hope for their health and how the run club has made them a better person. I hope this program continues for many years. I can’t imagine life without it. Fitness classes, personal training, run club, and family fitness activities are designed to assist people at varying levels of physical exertion. Indian Health Care Resource Center’s Domestic Violence Intervention Program increases access to culturally sensitive domestic violence and sexual assault prevention, advocacy, crisis intervention, and behavioral health services for American Indian victims of domestic violence and their families. The program consists of bullying training in the schools, individual counseling, community education, training for professionals, and appropriate referrals for shelter and legal services. IHCRC 2019

Carmelita Skeeter, First Year as CEO (1989)
We encounter countless, competent leaders during our lifetime, but we rarely have the privilege of knowing, much less working with, an exceptional leader, like Carmelita Skeeter. Her leadership style, which appears to be effortless, inspires others and is decisive, ethical, visionary and more. For three decades, she has unselfishly served Indian Health Care Resource Center and led its evolution from a small medical clinic to its position today as a nationally-recognized, integrated multi-disciplinary, comprehensive healthcare center. Her insatiable passion to serve has advanced access to healthcare for Native people not only in Tulsa but also the State of Oklahoma and nation. -Janice Edmiston, IHCRC Board Member

Celebrating 30 Years as CEO Carmelita Skeeter began her career of helping people through a social action group dedicated to assisting struggling families in Tulsa. In 1976, she helped with a study of the needs of Indian people in Tulsa. The grant evolved into what is today known as Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa. After serving as clinic administrator, Carmelita became Chief Executive Officer in 1989. Carmelita is a mentor to many and an advocate for all who are underserved. Carmelita has truly changed hundreds of thousands of lives during her tenure.
