Executive Did you employ an intern this
summer? Those that did received more than “cheap labor to do grunt work”. IIAD’s intern, Esmeralda Miguel, was sponsored by DISD as part of the Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program. Esmeralda, a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School, is an InVEST student. Seven others from WWHS also interned in our industry this summer: Alex Aguinaga at Texcap Insurance, Riley Barnes and Parker Christian at Champion Commercial, Joe Bayless at AmWINs, Arely Becerra at Hotchkiss Insurance Agency, Cole Martinez at Patterson & Assoc., Austin Regan at Lipscomb Insurance. Arely and Austin are both continuing on at their agencies on a part time basis during the school year. The students learned to work in office team environments, built spreadsheets, compiled data and did cold calling. They also expanded social media strategies, collaborated on multi media projects, offered opinions and shared fresh ideas. It’s safe to say they made contributions beyond just filing or shredding papers. We are missing the boat if we don’t figure out a way to employ an intern. In addition to “trying on” a possible future employee at a discounted rate($10/hour), employers can benefit from free advertising.
Address
Interns are young and energetic, and if you impress them, they will tell their world about the experience in your office. Interns learn quickly, are eager to impress, and have no fear of technology. Drew Brown of TexCap Insurance employed their first intern this summer. The entire agency was beyond pleased. “Alex rotated through different departments to gain a broad understanding of insurance”, said Drew. “Both the Agency and the intern benefited from the experience. There was value in engaging our employees to be active participants in sharing their knowledge, but also in introducing a young person to the industry. We helped equip him for his next steps in education and in his career path, and maybe played a small role in helping bring the next generation to insurance.”

BYTAMMY LAND IIAD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
"We are missing the boat if we don’t figure out a way to employ an intern!" Check out Esmeralda’s “Project Intern” video on our website http://video214.com/play/t2vM E0vHC1LdVD1iqT9u7g/s/dark and see page 29 for pictures of our intern at work. “Project Intern” was a video interview assignment given to find out what the interns thought about our industry. InVEST has created an internship guide to use as a resource, and any of the IIAD members that have employed interns will also gladly share how they utilized their summer helpers. Our InVEST schools (WWHS, Adamson HS, Carrollton Creekview, R.L. Turner) are filled with students looking for an opportunity beyond flipping burgers. Please consider hiring one next summer.
