Baker-Bot had complained repeatedly about being bullied by a group of Resistorbots,(unmanned) and it is thought that his human companion, Toby, had tried to take things into his own hands. Seeing how vulnerable he was, the Resistorbots were quick to offer their help, in return for information about the Bu zz Ball. But, when Si failed to del iver on his promise, Miss Merize demanded that he pledge his loyalty to her and the Res istorbot. Now read on...
CHAPTER FOUR
TEN YEARS EARLIER... Miss Merize watched contentedly as Grace, her human companion, played happily on her new bike which she had just been given by her doting parents. Life was good, anything Grace wanted, Grace got. This was good news for Miss Merize because it meant she was well looked after as well. She lived in a comfortable home, went on wonderful holidays, first class of course, had some amazing toys and only the most expensive designer outfits would be acceptable for her to wear. Miss Merize had a close relationship with Grace and, as with all Life-Bots, over time she took on all the good and bad characteristics of her human companion.
M
iss Merize was livid! She had come so so close to getting her hands on the Buzz Ball. How had her plans been discovered? Who had betrayed her? She had been so careful, only her most trusted associates had been aware of her meeting with Si. Oh, and that idiot General Choob, of course, but she didn’t think he would have told anyone because..
1 He was the one who had brought Si to her attention in the first place.
2 He hated ROBOB because he had humiliated him at school.
3 He had seen for himself how Miss Merize
punished anyone that betrayed her, and he was terrified of her.
No it wasn’t Choob, so who was it? Surely not Dr Creek? No, she dismissed that thought immediately. If there was one person she knew who definitely wouldn’t have jeopardised her plans, it was Creek, he was just as desperate to get his hands on the Buzz Ball as she was. So who could it be? Miss Merize wasn’t really shocked that, once again, she had been betrayed. All of her life, people had let her down.
Grace thought she was the most important person in the world, and deserved nothing but the best. Her parents were there to serve her and provide her with every little thing her heart desired. She did not take kindly to being refused anything, and she didn’t understand why other children wouldn’t always play the games she wanted to play, or see that she should always be the princess, fairy queen or head girl. As a consequence of this, Grace only had a few friends. Girls who liked the fact that Grace’s parents were rich and just wanted a share of Grace’s treats, or girls who were a little bit scared of Grace, and wanted a quiet life! Miss Merize‘s life was a mirror image of Grace’s. She scorned the idea of friendships, it just seemed too much like hard work, all that being nice to one another, pretending to be interested in what they were doing in their boring little lives. Yawn...what was that all about? No, she had Grace and that was all she needed. The changes in Miss Merize’s life happened so slowly that at first she hardly noticed. Grace‘s parents seemed to be getting very mean, refusing to buy her the latest iPhone, even though Grace had screamed, begged, stopped eating for a day and a half and threatened to cut all her hair off! Then they nervously announced that this year’s holiday on the yacht had been cancelled, in fact the yacht had been sold! And then, the final straw came when Grace, after reading a private letter to her dad, found out that she was going to have to leave her very expensive school and go to a NORMAL school!
Grace was beside herself with rage. How dare her parents humiliate her like this? Normal school... as if! Grace shut herself away in her room and refused to come out, not even her mum and dads tearful pleading moved her, she was just too angry. Not once did it occur to her that her parents weren’t doing this deliberately to hurt her. Her dad’s business, which had provided all their wealth, had been losing customers for months and had finally had to close. Not once did it occur to her that this was a time when her parents needed her to be unselfish and understanding. Neither did she think to offer them a kindly word or even a hug of encouragement. No, all Grace thought about was what she was losing and how unfair it all was. Miss Merize was furious too, how dare Grace’s parent’s treat her this way? Making her cry, not
giving in to her when she wanted what were, in Miss Merize’s opinion, quite reasonable requests. This just didn’t seem right at all, so she began to plan her revenge. Grace’s dad had a car which was his pride and joy. A bright red, 1969 Ferrari Dino, which he kept in the enormous garage directly underneath Grace’s bedroom. Occasionally, he polished it and took it out for a quiet drive around the neighbourhood, but most of the time, it was tucked away safely.
What a waste! As far as Miss Merize was concerned, he should have sold that stupid car ages ago, before he sacrificed all their lovely comforts. The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, and a devious plan began to take shape in her mind. Later that night, after making sure that Grace was asleep, Miss Merize crept down stairs and out of the house. She rolled quickly around to the side door of the garage and hunted round until she found the key, hidden behind an old plant pot. ‘This is just too easy’ she thought smugly, ‘I’ll teach them a lesson they will never forget’. She silently moved around the garage until she came upon a can of petrol that they kept for emergencies. Carefully unscrewing the cap, she made her way over to the precious car, which was hidden under a cover in the corner of the white, pristine building. She grabbed an old rag and carefully soaked it in petrol before placing it under the Ferrari. Standing well back, she lit a match and, with shaking fingers, threw it onto the rag.
BANG! It exploded into a ball of raging fire! Miss Merize hadn’t anticipated such a ferocious blaze and was starting to panic, the smoke was getting so thick that she couldn’t see the way out. She started racing around the edge of the garage, feeling for an exit until, at last, she found the door handle and let herself out to safety. As she looked back at the house, the horror of what she had done became clear. Not only was the garage ablaze, but so too were the rooms above it. “Oh no, Grace!” Miss Merize rushed towards the blazing building, but was forced back by the intense heat. “What have I done?“ she sobbed. Up and down the road, people were starting to come out of their houses. The Fire Brigade were
Miss Merize spun around and was confronted with a terrifying sight. A tall Life-Bot was holding on to her with what appeared to be his only hand. He looked like he was made up from a lot of broken bits and pieces. Nothing matched, he had one red eye and a leather plate had been fixed over where his right eye should have been. But, what really caught Miss Merize’s attention was the fact that he had no key, and he seemed to be functioning very well without it.
called and, within no time, their sirens could be heard racing towards the crumbling house. It was pandemonium, chaos all around, people shouting, blue lights flashing, water shooting up out of the big hoses onto the roof of the once beautiful home. Miss Merize watched the disaster unfold in a sort of dream. Her eye never left the window of the bedroom above the garage, waiting, hoping against all hope that she would see Grace being pulled to safety by the firemen. She never once saw any movement from any of the windows. She sat and stared as the building went from a blazing inferno to a blackened shell. The Fire Brigade collected their equipment, and the big convoy of fire engines made their way slowly back down the road. Miss Merize watched in silence as three dark bundles were carried out of the smouldering house and taken away. She wasn’t aware of how long she sat there. Night turned to day, day turned to night, and still she didn’t move. She must have fallen asleep at some point because she suddenly became aware that she was being shaken. As she sat up with a jolt, memories of the previous day came flooding back, and she tried to curl up into a ball but was having difficulty moving. She felt like she had lost all of her energy. “Don’t try to move“ said a sharp voice at her side.
“Who are you?“ she asked, with a weak, strained voice. She was almost out of power and needed to wind up her key. She turned her back to the strange Life-Bot, hoping he would understand what she needed. “That won’t do you any good” he laughed, spitefully. “Looks like your key has melted out of shape, there’s no way that’s ever going to work again”. He came around and looked Miss Merize in the eye, “Did you have something to do with that terrible fire last night?” Miss Merize shook her head as vigorously as she could, but the Life-Bot didn’t look convinced. “You must have been somewhere very hot for your key to melt” he muttered, whilst fiddling around behind her. He had a large square object with wires attached that he was trying to fix on to Miss Merize’s back. She tried to wriggle away but couldn’t muster up the strength.
At Dr Creek’s reference to human companions, Miss Merize started feeling panicky again. How was she going to survive without Grace? Where would she live? Who would be her friend and look out for her? The more she thought about all the things she had lost, the angrier she became. “Why do all these bad things happen to me? It just isn’t fair” she cried. “It’s all Grace’s dad’s fault” she continued, “if he hadn’t been so tight with his money, Grace wouldn’t have got upset and I wouldn’t have felt so angry... I hate Grace’s dad, I’m glad he’s dead!” She turned to Dr Creek, “How many Life-Bots have you provided power for?” “Well let me see, there’s a friend of mine, Dr Gon, a multi-legged Life-Bot, who found that he had to wind up himself all the time when his human lost interest in him. And then there’s Striiike and Honey, not forgetting Mittens. There really are quite a few of us, and we’re growing all the time. Why do you ask?”
“Stop wriggling you stupid girl, I’m trying to help you” he snapped. “If I can just… ah that’s better, that screw fits nicely. Hold on now, just one more….there!” he said triumphantly. “How dare you!” shouted Miss Merize, as she swung around and slapped the Life-Bot on the cheek. “No one touches me without permission. Ever! Especially as I don’t even know your name, you weirdo” “Dr Creek said to the scruffy Life-Bot, “and, a ‘thank you’ might be in order. Haven’t you noticed that you have your power back?” Miss Merize pulled herself up. Sure enough, she could talk and move with ease. “How did you do that?” “I have discovered a way of providing power without keys. Obviously, the humans would rather we didn’t know about this, it makes us less dependent on them of course, but I see that as a good thing” Dr Creek explained, in his funny, croaky voice.
“Don’t you think we should try and spread the word about this amazing power? We could be free of humans. Why should we rely on them for our homes and all our things? We have just as much intelligence, we are often quicker and stronger, we could run our own lives without them!” Her eye was glowing with excitement and Dr Creek started looking a bit worried. “Well, you do realise that the power in my batteries is not good for our planet, and, strictly speaking, I’m not meant to be doing this?” “Oh who cares about that?“ said Miss Merize impatiently. “That’s their rules, we don’t need to listen to them, that’s the whole point. Don’t you see?” Miss Merize started rolling up and down with excitement, she had so many plans running around her head. She could see it all now, a powerful army of battery powered Life-Bots that could survive without any human interference, and herself, of course, at its head, ruling with a rod of iron. Every Life-Bot bowing down before her, pledging their loyalty to her. So caught up with this wonderful daydream was she, that she barely noticed that Dr Creek had starting rolling away.
“Hey” she shouted, “where do you think you’re going?”
“That’s what we’ll call ourselves, it’s perfect. Resistorbots” she said again.
“Home” he shouted back over his shoulder, “are you coming or not?”
“Hmmm, Resistorbots,” Dr Creek tried it out, “yes, I can see what you mean. Very descriptive”.
Miss Merize didn’t need asking twice, after all, she had no where else to go and, as far as she was concerned, this was the start of her new life. She had already forgotten Grace and her parents, they were just distant memories of people who had let her down and caused her pain. They were the excuse she would give herself for every bad thing she would do in her life from now on. They were exactly why Life-Bots needed to resist the influence that the humans had over them, they caused them nothing but trouble.
He turned and carried on walking, Miss Merize caught up with him, and they both rolled off into the distance.
Miss Merize suddenly stopped. Dr Creek turned and looked at her, enquiringly. “Resistorbots!” she shouted. “What?” said Dr Creek, who clearly thought she’d lost the plot.
A hundred yards behind where they had been talking, stood the charred remains of a large, once magnificent house. In front of it, where the big electric gates were now blackened, someone had placed three circles of flowers, in memory of the family that had so recently lived there. No one ever found out how the fire in the big house had started, and no one ever bothered to find out what had happened to Grace’s Life-Bot, it was just assumed that she had perished in the fire with the rest of the family. Little did they know that they hadn’t seen the last of Miss Merize. She’d be back, stronger than ever and ready for a fight!

thing that’s happened to you in public? lachie: I went on stage in front of 50,000 people in Hyde Park and half way through the set I realised my fly was undone. Now I have a check before I go on stage just to be sure! Rusty: Which one of you has the most annoying habits and what
are they?
lachie: Timmy and I have a bit of a nail-biting habit when we get
really busy. We’re like a bunch of kids sometimes.
Rusty: If you were a robot, what special powers would you have? lachie: I would love to fly and teleport (which would be handy,
because then it wouldn’t matter if I lost my passport!). I would also like to be able to make everyone happy and smiley. Rusty: Would you be a ‘Resistorbot’ or an ‘E-Bot’? lachie: I’m definitely an E-Bot, but it would be good to
know what it’s like in a Resistorbot’s shoes so then you’d know what they’re up to when they’re being evil.

The Adventures of ROBOB trading card game has been designed to work for all ages and abilities. There are many different ways to play, from simple ‘Trumps’ and ‘Who’s who?’ games, to a more strategic battle where you may need to sacrifice certain robots for the good of your team.

Lay your Battle Board on a flat surface. Split the cards into two piles, one for the E-Bots and one for the Resistorbots. Now choose your army and shuffle the cards. Place your army face down and, without looking, take the top 15 cards from that pile. These are the cards you will battle with. You can now look at your cards but don’t show your opponent. Now lay the 7 ‘Action Cards’ face down in the spaces in the centre of the battle board. Player one should now select one of the ‘Action Cards’ and turn it over for all to see. Both players should now look through their cards and select three characters that have a high score for that action. Place these cards, face down on the 3 play areas on your side of the board. Now battle the 3 cards, 1 at a time, based on the action that has been chosen. The higher number wins. The winner of each battle captures their opponents card and places it in jail until the end of the game.

The winning cards can be placed back in your pack and can be played again. In the event of a draw, each player keeps their card. Repeat steps 5 to 7 until all the action cards have been played or a player runs out of cards. The player with the most prisoners is the winner.
