Course Overview

Course Methodology

Life in the world of work is constantly on the move. To succeed you must move with it or better still, ahead of it. This course will show you how you can win by employing your staff well. You will examine the latest ideas and thinking to equip you for ‘Best Practise ER’.

This course is highly interactive. The topics will be presented by the course leader, followed by group or individual work to expand thinking around particular subjects. Delegate groups will then present their conclusions. In this way you will complete a learning cycle which will allow you to expand your thinking with regard to ER and to return to work equipped with ideas about how to implement or expand ER within your organisation.

ER cannot be just about employees. It is the perceptions of employee and employer of their mutual obligations’. ER covers the employee’s life with you from before he or she is recruited until long after they have left you. Today, right now! You have a reputation. What is that reputation saying about your organisation? Your best recruiters are your employees – BUT – and it is a big but, only if you treat them well. Are they engaged? Are they partners in what you are trying to achieve? ER fits in at three levels 1. The wider world of work 2. Your organisation 3. Your employees It is vital to build your ER strategy in the context of all three. This course will show you how. Treat your staff well and they will respond. The region is moving fast along the ER road. Employees have greater freedom, more choice and a larger say in their own futures. To respond to that, through this course you will look at and discuss: • Methods of effectively listening to your employees • The important and unwritten ‘Psychological Contract’ • Expectations, duties and rights • Your ‘employer brand’ and culture • Leadership • Better methods of employment and work organisation • How to improve flexibility to achieve greater output • Keeping employees winning to create competitive advantage • Power and its use and misuse • Impact and costs of stress and absence • Employee Support • Using your employees’ Intellectual Capital • Reward – Retention – Succession Planning The course gives you unique access to your course leader, Charles Wilson’s latest research from the region. There is insufficient thinking going on in the region concerning ER and your experience on the course will open doors and promote ideas for you. You will see how ER is developing and discuss a model of successful ER, developed by Charles. Through case study of real situations, exposure to the work of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and Investors In People (IIP) you will be brought up to date. Not only will you be better equipped personally, additionally you will take away ideas, challenges and be shown how to apply successful ER in your workplace. The course will be conducted in a supportive and friendly atmosphere, giving plenty of opportunity for you to discuss and expand your own ideas amongst a network of professionals.

The course is based upon the latest ER thinking, both globally and in the region. You will receive references for further enquiry into ER and suggestions to help expand your knowledge and awareness of the subject. There will be a number of exercises conducted during the course on the following topics: • Exercise ‘Big Picture’ which will look at how ER fits into the workplace in the region. You will conduct an analysis of the Political, Economic, Social and Technological (PEST) factors which impact upon people at work • Exercise ‘Contract’ which will examine how the unwritten ‘psychological contract’ between employer and employee has changed and continues to change During the course you will discuss various management models: Atkinson’s ‘Flexible Firm’ and Wilson’s ‘ER Star’. You will look at styles of leadership and management, particularly John Adair’s ‘Action Centered Leadership’ In addition there will be discussion sessions on your approaches towards programmes for: • Stress management • Employee engagement • Employee ‘voice’ • Work/life balance • Quality of Working Life (QWL) The very useful, detailed research completed by CIPD into retention will be the subject of ‘Exercise RDR’: Recruit – Develop – Retain.

Who Should Attend? This course is important for all managers with responsibility for staff who wish to understand the latest developments in the fi eld of Employee Relations (ER). Whilst ER is an integral part of HR, this course is not just for HR staff. The importance of high quality ER has a direct impact upon levels of service, profi t, standards, business ethics, corporate social responsibility and corporate governance and ER is a topic that should be widely understood throughout each organisation.
