Today’s businesses are very concerned about social responsibilities and how they impact the environment around them. A primary part of this social responsibility is to consider how your business activities, operations, products and services have an impact on the environment and how these impacts can be harmonised with your business goals and strategies. Aside from the concerns on a business’s social responsibilities, one of the fastest growing “business risks” is what is known as “Environmental Risks”. In light of increasing public awareness of environmental issues and the impact that these issues could have on people’s day to day life, authorities and regulatory bodies are now more interested to monitor and regulate organisations’ performance with respect to environment. Organisations’ decision makers are re-thinking their business plans and adopting Environmental Management Systems (EMS) as a platform for a “Sustainable Business” by setting short/long term objectives and management plans based on their existing environmental performance indicators and constantly monitoring their performance.

Incorporating environmental management is key to the success of any organisation. This course provides you with the building blocks to do this. We look at how the environment works, how pollution can affect this and what we can do to ensure we operate sustainably by introducing robust management processes.

Day One Session One: Introduction And Terminology • Overview of today’s environmental issues e.g.climate change, greenhouse effect, acid rain, ozone depletion, pollution of land, air and water, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, population growth and consumption, non-renewable resource use and desertification • Key terminologies introduced: Environment, EMS, Environmental Aspects and Impacts, Sustainability,etc.

• Direct and indirect operational controls including how to control subcontractor’s activities • Prevention of pollution mechanism vs. end-of-pipe solutions • Environmental emergency scenario planning and conducting mock drills Session Six: Environmental Incidents And Accidents • Environmental incident/accident reporting • Conduct a root cause investigation • Define Corrective And Preventive Actions (CAPAs) for incidents • Measure the effectiveness of CAPAs

• Standard definitions of environmental aspects and impacts • Identification of aspects and impacts based on process flow charts • Major categories of environmental aspects – checklist • Assess the environmental risks involved with each aspect and impact • Develop control measures • Monitoring of environmental risk movement (upwards/ downwards)

• Environmental audit cycle: Plan – Prepare – Perform – Report – Follow-up • Prepare a risk-based environmental audit plan • Be prepared for conducting an added value environmental audit: conduct document reviews, prepare checklists, etc.
