Real opportunities coming online for international investors of Energy And Mineral Resources in a new energy mix being sought. Ministry facts and figures (2009-2010) Nuclear Power

Oil Shale Exploitation Exploration has confirmed Jordan possesses one of the world’s richest stockpiles of oil shale- at least 500bn barrels of oil equivalent which would be enough to turn Jordan into a net exporting oil country. The government has focused its efforts to exploit the oil shale on 3 levels; surface mining to exploit oil shale, utilise oil shale positioned deep underground through Shell’s In Situ Conversion Process-ICP, and generate electricity by the direct burning of oil shale with a project planned to be in commercial operation in 2015.

Jordan’s uranium reserves account for 2% of the world’s total. The estimated quantities of up to 65 thousand tons in the form of surface sediment in addition to approximately 100 thousand tons found in the Jordan Phosphate makes the Kingdom the 11th largest source around the globe. As part of the National Energy Strategy the Kingdom is pushing forward with a designed role for nuclear power. Of which the main objectives are to exploit the natural raw nuclear materials in Jordan, establish nuclear energy plants for electricity generation and water desalination, (the first of which is expected to be operational in 2020), develop human resources necessary for the implementation of Jordan’s nuclear program and strengthen the infrastructure of nuclear science.

Clean Energy

Oil And Gas Upstream and Downstream

Characterised by bright sunny days throughout most of the year and strong wind resources due to elevation and temperature gradients, Jordan’s Energy Master Plan dictates that renewable energy must make up 10% of the mix by 2020. To achieve these figures the focus will be on the implementation of the following projects; utilising wind energy to generate electricity up to 1000MW, solar energy up to 300-600MW and other vital energy resource up to 20-20MW.

There is strong reason to believe that new hydrocarbon fields can yet be found in Jordan’s largely unexplored landscape. The kingdom has a wide array of incentives, PSAs and joint venture opportunities to offer in the upstream sector, coupled with investment options to expand oil refining and distribution capabilities, gas networks and look to LNG projects.

Rates

In The Field Of Electricity

Solar Energy: 5-7 kilowatt/hr/meter sq Wind Energy: the average wind speed is around 7m/s (300watts/meter sq) Bio Energy: around 5000-7000 tons per day In a bid to attract the private sector the Kingdom has committed to robust policies, procedures, feed in tariffs and has began tendering attractive projects within these technologies.

In recent years the Government of Jordan has taken several important steps to attracting IPP investment to supply power to the regional market and meet future domestic requirements of electricity. The responsibility of generating electricity energy and construction of new power stations is invested in the private sector and any proposed configuration within the framework of economic, environmental and quality of supply will be considered.
