Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties of Concrete by using Marble Sludge Powder as Admixtures A. Dhanalakshmi Assistant Professor Department of Civil Engineering P.S.R Engineering College, Sivakasi, TamilNadu.
Abstract Nowadays reusing of waste material is necessary to reduce the waste deposit in our world. The waste deposit will create harmful to the environment and human beings. In this project marble sludge powder was used as admixture. Marble sludge powder is a waste product when sawing and the polishing processes were done. The main objective of our project is to study the influence of admixtures used with marble powder, and to compare it with the compressive strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength of ordinary M20 concrete. We are also trying to find the percentage of marble powder adding (4%, 6%,8%,10%) in concrete that makes the strength of the concrete maximum. marble powder of volume fractions 2,6, 8, & 10% on Ordinary Portland cement concrete. Keywords: Ordinary Portland cement, Marble powder, Compressive strength. INTRODUCTION
From the ancient time, marble is one of the most important materials used especially for decorative purposes. However its powder has polluted the environment, soil, water and creates health problems to human beings. Marble powder is produced from sawing and polishing of marble blocks. About 7,000,000 tons of marble have been produced in the world. Disposal of the marble powder material of the marble industry is one of the environmental problems worldwide today. The sanitization of some fresh and hardened properties of concrete is successfully and economically achieved by utilizing and using some admixture materials such as mineral additions such as fly ash, silica fume, and marble powder. Several researchers studied the influence of using fly ash and silica fume on the properties of normal concrete, high strength concrete. In recent years many researches proved that mineral admixtures can be successfully and economically utilized to improve some fresh and hardened concrete properties. Furthermore, the use of marble powder for the production of concrete were investigated and proved that they could be used to improve the mechanical properties. II. MATERIALS USED AND MIX DETAILS Cement The cement used is chettinad OPC 53 grade cement. The Ordinary Portland Cement of 53 grades conforming to IS: 12269-1989 was used. Tests were conducted on cement like Consistency tests, Setting tests, Specific gravity test, and Fineness modulus test. The tested properties of cement are given in Table 1. S.No 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Table – 1 Properties of Cement Properties Results Specific Gravity 3.16 Consistency 3.6% Initial Setting time 30 min Final Setting time 10 hours Fineness modulus 32%
Fine Aggregate Fine aggregate used in the experiments were locally available natural river sand and also conforming to the requirements of IS: 383-1970. The tested properties of River sand are given in Table 2.
