SALES M ANAGER
Hej! Welcome to this month’s edition of Bostin News and my first opportunity to write the store message. Well what a month it has been! The weather has not been on our side with the ‘Beast from the East’ really challenging our performance on more than one occasion.
for us as our customer’s thin wallets continue to be a challenge. There will be a common thread throughout the Summer launch with Textiles being heavily involved as you will see throughout the store. This will give our customers the opportunity to revitalise their homes at an affordable price. Not forgetting our co-worker areas, the Development Hub and General Office which have both had makeovers, so thanks to our Comm&In team and everyone else involved for improving our working environment and giving us a better experience.
So we hosted the UK & IE People Event with 80 guests including Jeanette Soderburg (Regional Manager for Europe) and Gillian Drakeford (UK & IE Manager). The feedback given about our store was amazing, from fill levels to co-worker engagement, IKEA food to customer experience, something every function in the store should be very proud of. Imagine what our customers must experience and also feel from our store.
We have great products, great availability and we are giving a great customer experience, so there is lots in our favour to really chase those goals and work towards our bonus!
We have also rebuilt our Home Decoration department and are seeing some great results from it so far, which is contributing to our Sales Growth ambition. If you have not been and had a look then please do as the transformation from where it was to now is incredible. Again this has massively improved the customer shopping experience. Home Furnishing accessories will continue to be a focus
So let’s look forward to a great peak performance and the launch of Summer!
There is as always still lots to do and each and every one of us has our part to play to achieve our goals, so remember your feedback is always important, and if you have an idea, then share it!
Take care, David

NG COMI THIS H! MONT
ART FOR EVERYONE At IKEA, we’re guided by the vision of “creating a better everyday life for the many people”, so for years we’ve been providing people all over the world with functional and affordable design. But we believe that art can also play its part. It shouldn’t just be in galleries and museums - it belongs in the home too.
That’s what the IKEA Art Event is all about: inviting contemporary artists from around the world to cocreate art that can be put in any home, making it more vibrant, beautiful and fun. For the IKEA Art Event 2018 we got to thinking about toy art and Swedish crystal. Unlikely bedfellows? Perhaps. But we were curious...
14
What happens when you mash up the world of manga, designer toys and comics with the age-old tecniques of handmade Swedish art glass? We wanted to find out...
So, for the IKEA Art Event 2018 we invited eight contemporary artists, representing different artistic expressions, to each produce a crystal glass figurine. Most of the artists had never worked with glass before, and were keen to embrace the challenges and possibilities the material presents. To produce the handmade figurines, the artists collaborated with some of the most skilled glass masters in the world, based in MĂĽlerĂĽs, right in the middle of SmĂĽland, Sweden - not far from the very heart of IKEA. The result? A collection of eight crystal glass figurines that are playful, expressive and accessible - with a whole world inside of them.
15
“In working with glass, as a material with such a long and amazing tradition, we got the opportunity to lift it to the contemporary scene.” Henrik Most, Creative Leader for the IKEA Art Event Project
The figurines are produced at Målerås glassworks in Småland, not far from where the IKEA story began. One of the few glassworks still active in Sweden, Målerås was founded in 1890. As Henrik Most, Creative Leader for the IKEA Art Event project, puts it, “We wanted to see what would happen when combining an old craft tradition with young art forms. I think we found something interesting that hopefully can introduce art glass to a new generation.” When choosing the artists to collaborate with, the goal was to create both a geographic representation from around the world and a creative mix that would provide a taste of what’s going on in the contemporary art scene. “I love the art projects because they are so different from working with design. Here you need your intuition to guide you to a much higher degree. It’s more about being open to possibilities and creating a genuine trust between yourself and the artist. About nurturing the artist.” Keep an eye out for more information and look out for the Art Event coming to store this month!

UK&IE PEOPLE EVENT &

Refurbishments
Last month IKEA Birmingham had the honour and priviledge to host the UK&IE People Event FY18. We had over 80 visitors over the two day event from all over the United Kingdom and Ireland, including Jeanette Soderburg (Regional Manager for Europe) and Gillian (UK&IE Manager). The day was filled with a range of different talks and inspirational workshops for visitors and the feedback given about our store was amazing, from fill levels to co-worker engagement, from IKEA food to customer experience - something every function in the store should be very proud of!
18
P r e p a r a t i o n f o r t h e d a y. . . In preparation for the event we had lots of in-store improvements to give our 80 guests the ‘wow-factor’ when visiting IKEA Birmingham for possibly the first time! One of the main projects was the refurbishment of our Development Hub, as this was the main hosting place for the day.

A message from Amy & Richard: “The whole store were so pleased and so engaged to host such a positive and meaningful event, where so many wonderful people come together to share and inspire.
It is always so wonderful to see so many colleagues come together along with so many senior IKEA leaders, to spend such quality time together and to be inspired.
This particular event has a special place in mine and Amy’s heart, as we were both fortunate enough to have attended the same event in Leeds store some years back, which really supported our very own IKEA journey’s!
Guest speaker for the day was Jeanette Soderberg, Regional Manager, who shared her journey and insights throughout the day, as well as many leaders from across the UK & IE. A special mention must go out to all co-workers in the Store, OCP and all Service Office partners for their efforts and togetherness in making this special event happen. Thank you all so much! #TeamBirmingham wish everyone that attended good luck on their IKEA journeys!”

Thank you IKEA food! Another big thank you to all of IKEA food for feeding all of our guests throughout the day and for putting on a brilliant spread of food for lunch that was enjoyed by all, including some of our co-workers!
The IKEA food team
Lorna from Customer Services said about t h e d a y. . . “Wow! What an inspiring day! Firstly I would like to express my thanks to IKEA Birmingham for allowing me to take part in hosting such a successful event. I learnt so much from this experience, such as where our brand stands today, IKEA values and what they mean to us as individuals and how the development of the Next Generation leaders evolve. Hearing many journies along the way from different parts of the world, I feel proud to be part of such an amazing, growing Birmingham team. We all pulled together to host an unforgettable event, which I am sure will be talked about. The food was amazing - so much cake! You did your store proud. Thank you to Amy & Richard for letting me be a part of such an inspiring experience. 21

New General Office
Before...
Along with other improvements around the store, one of the biggest jobs was the rebuild of our General Office which was designed by Emma Aston from Comm&In! This was a huge task and we’ve has an incredible transformation... Our original office was dark, unorganized and we were even using dining tables as desks! Space was restricted and storage space was also an issue so the aim was to create an area that all co-workers could use. Emma’s key goals to achieve when designing the new office were:
Before the face-lift...
During... It was getting closer to the People Day visit and we wanted to make sure the office was looking presentable for our guests so it required us all to come together to help wherever we could! 24
• To give all co-workers equal and adequate desk space • To group functions together • Provide new and functional storage solutions • Hide wiring and the data cable dado rail • Clear walls of clutter • Refresh • Inspire
Liam, Martin, Paul, Dawn, Jade, Gareth, Ellie and Gordon... building all the new deks!
New desks, a new feature wall complete with a new TV screen for meetings and running presentations/sales results and vinyl details curstosy of Ash from Graphics,
The result! After 2 weeks of redevelopment, Phase One of the General Office Rebuild was done! Additional features and details to be added soon so watch this space!

A huge thank you to everyone else that helped during the 2 weeks: Full Serve for storing all the new furniture; Juno, Richard and Dave; Sam & Trudy for helping with the new meeting room; Pete for removing card and to Recovery & Self-Serve who took old furniture and put some back to stock! We now have a fabulous place to work and have new ‘flex’ desks for anyone to use, anytime!
