BACK IN IKEA BIRMINGHAM!

Demi Dulay IKEA BUSINESS UK & IE IKEA Birmingham

Want to find out more about IKEA BUSINESS? To discover more about IKEA BUSINESS and learn about our services, simply log onto www.ikea.com/ gb/en/ikea-business Alternatively, you can pop into the General Office anytime to speak with Demi.

Hi, I am Demi! I have worked at IKEA for just over two years. I started at Birmingham OCP, and shortly worked on services over here in Wednesbury. I have also worked in sales and have been IKEA Food responsible at OCP. For the past 6 months I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my secondment role working in the Central Business team based in Coventry‌ Now that brings me back here to our store, where we have a shiny new IKEA BUSINESS point set up. IKEA BUSINESS is a system which provides Business customers with an easy way to shop. Their orders are sent via email to the nearest business point, where they process and organise delivery. Every customer is different, which means that everyone is shopping for different things. This is why IKEA BUSINESS makes its money across all HFB's. We cater for many different clients, such as schools, hotels, offices, accommodation and more. All orders vary, from 200 desks to 1,000 toilet brushes! We also offer a free planning service where our external planner meets the client and plans their space. 9

New wonders can come out of the blue! The printed IKEA catalogue has forever been one of the most iconic parts of our business. But as times change and the people’s habits change along with it, is a printed book the best way to reach and inspire them? 10

A new chapter This year IKEA UK & Ireland are testing a new way of working with the catalogue, lowering the amount of copies and using the savings to showcase our new products in other media. No need to worry though, the IKEA Catalogue will still be available in store for customers, or they can order it online free of charge. This coincides with a series of 4 seasonal product launches throughout the coming year. Whereas the printed catalogue represented a single moment in time, our new approach enables IKEA to celebrate a continual stream of new products, ranges and collections, and therefore attract more people to shop with IKEA, more often. New wonders can come out of the blue Our first campaign launches with a bang on TV and VideoOn-Demand. Using the instantly recognisable IKEA FRAKTA blue bag as a visual shortcut to ‘newness’, we have produced three 20 second TV adverts designed to show the transformative power of even the smallest new item in the home. We launched with ‘Spinning Cups’ – an uplifting story where a drab afternoon tea party turns into the highlight of the social calendar. Following on from 21st September is ‘Cat Nap’ – in which something slightly

unexpected happens to a young woman as she uses new IKEA products to turn her living room into a cosy haven. And lastly, ‘Rocking Room’ featuring a range of new products that turn the bedroom of a crying little one into a soothing sleepy sanctuary. Log onto IKEA Inside to see the first of the TV adverts. A celebration of newness at IKEA Then, we delve deeper into the ways that new IKEA products can improve everyday life at home. In PR and in an IKEA FAMILY communication we present some highlights of seven IKEA ‘Rooms’ that feature our key products and ranges, as well as a bespoke email communication to drum up excitement around the limited FÖREMÅL launch. Digital display formats will showcase our news across the internet, and in social channels we will be serving a series of promoted pins on Pinterest and carefully curated Facebook collection ads to provide even more home furnishing inspiration. IKEA.co.uk has also been transformed into a hub where users can explore our new wonders in more detail, and learn more about the small changes that can make a big difference: from featured products to inspiring ideas pages and exciting new ranges like SAMMANHANG and LYSKRAFT. 11

IKEA has been producing and distributing catalogues since 1951 with the ambition to reach the many people with our range and home furnishing inspiration. While our approach to the catalogue has remained relatively unchanged for decades, customer behaviour has‌ in recognition of the changes in how people want to browse and shop and digital channels now available to more efficiently distribute our home furnishing expertise, we will try to reach people in a more tailored and targeted way. As a part of the global test, we won’t post IKEA catalogues to homes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. To be able to evaluate the test, we will distribute the catalogue as normal to customers in Scotland and Ireland. We will test if and how other media and activities can replace the effect of the distribution of IKEA catalogue. This will help us understand the true value of the printed catalogue and explore how we can reach and interact with more people through other media. Q&A Why have I not received a catalogue at home this year? We know that the delivery of the new IKEA Catalogue is highly anticipated but we want to explore how we can improve our shopping experience for the future. As part of our digital transformation, we will be 12

trialling a project to stop home distribution of the IKEA Catalogue. People will still be able to collect the IKEA Catalogue in-store or order one for delivery to their home online. Why are we doing this? Due to more people shifting toward digital channels, we have identified that the physical Catalogue needs to transform for the future to better support our customers shopping experience. We have also seen a decline in the interest and awareness of the catalogue, despite continued high distribution quantities. This has also been seen in surveys conducted, with audits showing that 20% of those receiving dispose of the catalogue immediately. How can I still get hold of a physical catalogue? People will still be able to collect an IKEA Catalogue in-store or order one for delivery, free of charge, to their home online from our website: www.ikea.co.uk/catalogue They can also browse our website for lots of inspirational content and new products. IKEA Birmingham making Scarlett’s dream come true!

After ‘Walking for Dreams’ and ‘Cycling Around the UK’, together at IKEA Birmingham, we raised enough money to make 7-year-old Scarlett’s dream of having a new garden she can play in come true! 16

Scarlett (left), who has mixed cerebral palsy, global development delay and epilepsy, wrote to Promise Dreams with the dream of having her garden re-done to make it more accessible for her to go outdoors and play with her two sisters, Alice and Isabelle. Scarlett’s disability restricts movement in her legs so she relies on her wheelchair or crawling. Scarlett’s garden in her new house was full of stones and uneven surfaces which made it impossible for her to go outside in her wheelchair or standing frame – and it definitely wouldn’t have been okay for her to crawl and enjoy the garden. In her letter to Promise Dreams, Scarlett wrote about how she’d love to have grass and space to grow flowers (red ones – her favourite colour!) as well as being able to play outside with her sisters. She’d also love to have her trampoline back, which she loves to bounce on!

After working with Promise Dreams now for 1 year here at IKEA Birmingham, and already making the dreams of 2 other children come true, as soon as we heard about Scarlett’s dream we got on the case... A group of our co-workers took part in ‘Walk For Dreams’, a 10 mile sponspored walk, as well an in-store charity cycle event in which we cycled the legnth of the UK in two days.

We rasied an incredible £1331.64 from the two events, which was donated to Promise Dreams to help make Scarlett’s dream come true!

Team IKEA Birmingham ‘Walking for Dreams’ 17

Scarlett’s garden is now a safe, open space for her and her family to enjoy. With grass, neat and tidy areas for planting flowers and space for the trampoline. Scarlett and her sisters love the trampoline - it’s a real highlight!

After

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped fundraise and to everyone that donated. Together, with Promise Dreams, we have been able to completely transform the lives of this wonderful family for the better.

As we move straight into the new year, IKEA Birmingham will continue to work with Promise Dreams throughout FY19, and we hope to be able to make even more dreams come true for seriously and terminally ill children and their families. The five lucky winners on their visit to Älmhult

Democatic Design Voters win a trip to Älmhult! Including an IKEA Birmingham co-worker... This year, all IKEA co-workers were invited to cast a vote for The Democratic Design Awards. A selection of nominated products were presented in Sweden this summer which coworkers, across the world, were invited to vote for their favorites in each category. Five lucky coworkers were then selected to win a trip to the home of IKEA, Älmhult. 24

What are the Democratic Design Awards? IKEA Democratic Design Awards were introduced in 2014 to recognise people who, in their daily jobs, do great things for IKEA. This year, more than 6,000 co-workers across the globe voted for their favorites for this years award ceremony on 31st August.

What did the lucky five get up to when they go the chance to visit the home of IKEA? Rebecca from the US, Anton from Russia, Audrey from France, Charlie from Sweden and IKEA Birmingham's very own, Shannon were the five winners who won the trip a few weeks ago. After getting to know each other, learning about young Ingvar, mail order and flat pack, the group of co-workers got a guided tour around the IKEA Museum; a full tour of Älmhult, which also included a peak into the IKEA Test Labs; they got to hang out with the co-create IKEA team and also a tour of the IKEA Sweden store. The final installment of the trip saw the group of co-workers handing out the plaques, on 31st August, at the Democratic Design Awards, for the products they'd voted for. Shannon, one of the lucky coworkers, started working for IKEA when she was sixteen, and three years later she’s still meeting customers in Bedroom's here in Birmingham... "When I won the co-create competition’s trip to Sweden, I was so excited to go and see for myself all of the energy and enthusiasm that goes into IKEA products directly from the country where it all started".

Shannon (above) on her visit to Älmhult

"I won a flight to Copenhagen, where I traveled directly into the little ‘IKEA town’ Älmhult. I say this, because this is where the heart of the company comes from. Here is where all of the test labs, creation studios, catalogue shoots, visual communication offices and IKEA Museum is based. I spent a few days exploring the little town and especially loved seeing the co-create studio, where around 800 co-workers work in the creation of IKEA products that we see in store. It is so interesting seeing how a simple sketch can come to life and where small ideas can be made into best-selling products, such as the LACK table. I am so grateful for this opportunity that IKEA has given to me, so everyone, keep your eyes out for competitions on IKEA Inside". 25

IKEA Foundation Global Citizens Programme Jordan 24th-27th September The IKEA Foundation’s IWitness programme gives small groups of IKEA co-workers a life-changing chance to visit programmes connected to IKEA’s Good Cause campaigns, so they can explore how our partnerships help children and families around the world.

While they’re on their trips, coworkers share their experiences on the IKEA Foundation’s blog so that all co-workers, customers, friends and family can see how, together with our partners, we are helping children in some of the world’s poorest communities.
