BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Brent & Carrie Pollard, Rockford And your 2015 Young Leader Achievement Award winners are....Brent and Carrie Pollard of Rockford! Illinois Farm Bureau’s Young Leader Achievement Award recognizes extraordinary accomplishments in farming and leadership. Brent and Carrie were honored during Ag Day at the Illinois State Fair on August 18th. Congratulations on this well deserved honor! Participants are judged on their management, innovation and self-initiative as displayed through their farming operations. Leadership ability and involvement and participation in county Farm Bureau and other civic, service or community organizations also are major factors in the selection process. For anyone that has worked with Brent and Carrie on an Illinois Holstein event or in the planning of the 2015 National Holstein Convention, this description fits them exactly. They are always willing to lend a helping hand and roll up their sleeves to get the work done! Brent and Carrie own and operate a 100-cow dairy near Rockford, Illinois and they have a two-year-old daughter, Ainsley. Carrie also works off the farm for Bethany Swine Health Services writing comprehensive nutrient management plans for livestock producers. They played a very important role in the planning and success of the 2015 National Holstein Convention recently held in St. Charles. Brent and Carrie co-chaired the Convention Registrations and did an excellent job in keeping everything organized and running smoothly. As members of the Boone-Winnebago Holstein Club, Brent and Carrie are very active on the district level as well. Brent is the current President and Carrie is the Secretary/Treasurer. They also serve as co-chairs of the district show. In 2010, Carrie started a blog called My Cows and Pigs to share some of their stories on the farm and stories about farm life. You can find her blog at mycowsandpigs.blogspot. com. It is important to share our story and let consumers know what it is like on farms today. As winter will be here before we’re ready for it, we’d like to share one of Carrie’s early blog posts from February 2011: Blizzards have their advantages...
Like most of you, we have been “hunkered down” for the storm that brought over a foot of snow. Thankfully, the winds haven’t been as severe today, so that we’ve been able to dig out without everything blowing shut again. Being stuck at home also gave me the Illinois Holstein Herald

opportunity to do something I don’t normally do - watch Oprah. Oprah challenged the employees at Harpo studios to go vegan for a week. Almost 300 people completed the week challenge. Obviously, as someone who produces “animal products” for a living, this concerned me. If you choose not to eat meat, dairy or egg products, so be it, that is your right, and I am not going to argue with you; however, I just want to encourage you to allow every person to make that same decision with the correct information. What I enjoyed about the show yesterday was that Oprah encouraged everyone to learn more about where their food comes from. What I did not enjoy was that some of that information was coming from two authors who promote a vegan or reduced animal product diet, not the farmers who raise the food. Michael Pollan came across as the moderate in the discussion, and as he has worked very hard to encourage people to not support animal agriculture, that was concerning. Kudos to Cargill for allowing the show into one of their processing plants. I have been asked several times, “How do you do “it”?, and I thought this was pretty good. (http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Inside-aSlaughterhouse-Video/topic/oprahshow)Lisa Ling, who did the segment, was a meat eater, and still is. I spent an entire summer working in a pig processing plant in Missouri, and I can tell you that I am very comfortable that this
process is managed and overseen by experts who know what they are doing, and how to do “it” right. Remember, 98% of all farms are familyowned, and everyone who has been blessed with the ability to work with animals for a living takes that responsibility to put safe, nutritious, affordable food on your table very seriously. That is why, when the show was over, I layered up - grabbed the pitchfork and spread new straw in the maternity pen to keep the cows as comfortable as I could make them in the blizzard. Thank you to Brent and Carrie for all that you do to promote agriculture and all that you do for the Illinois Holstein Association! As the Young Leader Achievement Award recipients, Brent and Carrie receive a two-passenger Scout 4x4 courtesy of Case IH and Illinois Farm Bureau, a one-year membership in the Illinois Corn Growers Association and expensepaid trips to the Illinois Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in Chicago, American Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention in Orlando, the American Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference in Kansas City, the Young Leaders State Conference in East Peoria and the Growmark Annual Meeting. We wish you the very best as you continue on to the national level with Farm Bureau’s Young Leader’s Achievement Award!

Dale and I would like to thank everyone who had any part in the recent successful 2015 National Holstein Convention. The committee chairmen did an outstanding job. The volunteers were a help beyond expectations. Those who attended any event were greatly appreciated. I know all have busy schedules and priorities to home and family are important. Your participation is what made the convention a huge success. Many, many positive comments were made by attendees and 2015 in Illinois made a lasting impression on Holstein breeders and industry people from across the nation and internationally. Also we send a huge thank you to all our sponsors and monetary and in kind contributors. Without you none of this would have been possible. FROM THE PRESIDENT
It is hard to believe that it is time for the Fall issue of the Herald! Just where did the summer go? Well I believe between doing hay, going to district shows, kids sporting activities, County Fairs, State Show and State Fair, that is where a lot of our time was spent...not to mention the daily work schedule we all have! Oh yes, I forgot to mention one large time consuming event we as a state this past June...the 2015 National Holstein Convention took a large part of many of our members’ time and energy! The weather had a large impact on everyone as it does every year in our livelihood. The month of June caused areas of our state stress with all the rain in getting hay, and crop work done. Then you factor in the amount of time so many of our members spent getting ready for the convention. WE as a state managed to put together one of the biggest and best conventions the country has seen in YEARS!! Congratulations go out to everyone involved in pulling this thing off! Many people from all over the country have mentioned about how much fun and they had and how well the entire convention flowed together. That is a huge compliment to EVERYONE in our state. I wish I had enough space to list all the different committee chairs and their committee members, but that would take up more room than this article should be allowed. As your
President, I would like to say THANK YOU to each and every volunteer that made and took the time to help with this! A few short weeks following the convention, we had our State Holstein Show. A HUGE thank you goes out to our Show Co-Chairs Paula Bovre and Joe Engel for taking care of the duties that project involves. Our State Show was probably one of the largest and strongest State Shows we’ve had in years. It not only takes the co-chairs, but also our membership to be able to do that as well. Congratulations to all of the many award WINNERS and the exhibitors to make that show a success! Another huge THANK YOU goes out to the Bruce Clanton family for hosting the State Picnic! They did a great job of getting their place ready and having their cattle all presented in very nice manner. The hospitality they provided to all of our members was well received by all that attended. Coming up this fall we will be having our State Sale in Belvidere on October 24th. Jason Swanson and Eddie Bue have been working very hard on getting things ready for the sale. It will be a very nice lineup as always. For many years the State Sale has had a tradition of having many great animals that have gone on and done very well for their new owners. I hope to see many of you there! A week before the State Sale, the Bob Milller family will be hosting the Mil-R-Mor Generations Sale on October 17th. Bob has been a lifetime supporter of all of our state events. We wish him well on his future endeavors and at the same time we wish Lorilee a bright future as she starts with the next generation! Have a safe and successful harvest! I look forward to seeing everyone at future events!
Hello Illinois! I am honored to have been chosen to be the 2015-2016 Illinois Holstein Dutchess and represent the Holstein breed state-wide. I am the 19 year old daughter of Jered and Michelle Hart of Belvidere located in Boone County. This year has had quite the amount of excitement as Illinois hosted the National Holstein Convention. This was my very first National Holstein Convention and it was a great experience to get to attend and be part of the planning. As the Illinois Holstein Dutchess, my first duty was to hand out awards at the Illinois Championship Show for both the Junior and Open Shows alongside our Little Miss Holstein Samantha Heinzmann and Alternate Dutchess Katie Carlson. Congratulations to all of the participants in both shows and thank you for allowing us to be part of your experience! I also had the amazing privilege to meet the first ever Illinois Holstein Dutchess, Karen Ryan, while at the show, and she shared with me a few memories she had during her time as the
Dutchess. Since then, I have been preparing my cattle for the county fair, speaking to the public about our industry, handing out awards, showing and moving back to college. I hope you all had a great time at the Illinois State Fair and copious amounts of success! Coming up soon is the State Sale on October 24th. I am extremely proud to represent an industry full of hard working, loyal and kind folks. Thank you for being awesome!

2015 ILLINOIS CHAMPIONSHIP HOLSTEIN SHOW DEDICATION
This year, the Illinois Holstein Championship Show is dedicated to Nate Janssen and Brian Wesemann in honor of their years of service and dedication to the Holstein industry and the Illinois Holstein Association. Nate and Brian have served as co-chairs for the Illionis State Show for several years. They also served as co-chairs for the 2015 National Holstein Convention Host Day Tours where they organized all of the tour stops and helped the tour farms plan out and organize their tours. Nate and Brian were both on the Junior Dairy Bowl teams that won National Holstein and 4-H. Nate Janssen of Barrington, IL was the recipient of the 2012 IHA Junior Breeder Award and is currently the Director at Dairy Management, Inc. and owner of Janssen Cattle Company. He is a graduate of Cornell University and serves as a director for the National Dairy Shrine. Nate and his wife Sarah have two children, Joey (2) and Will (1). Brian Wesemann of Burlington, IL is the Director of Sales for Calf-Tel and Hampel Animal Care. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and has served as the Professional Liason for the Student National Agri-Marketing Association for UW-Platteville. Brian and his wife Tawnya have three children, Mason (10), Quinton (10) and Page (10).

DISTRICT NEWS MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
Greetings from the Mississippi Valley Holstein Club! We gathered this summer for a meeting hosted at the home of Rick and Mary Edwards in Quincy, Illinois. We had many members in attendance and a great meal was served. Would like to express sympathy to the Edwards family on the passing of Eadie Edwards on July 10, 2015. The District Show was held on July 30th and had about 80 entries. That was a wonderful number of dairy showing and everyone who participated did an excellent job preparing the cows and in their showing skills. Club president Kenny Koch was interviewed for the WGEM TV station during the show and helped to bring out public awareness for the dairy profession. A meal was prepared and service to all the club members. Big thanks to Kathy Neisen for preparing the menu. Congratulations goes out to Jordan Thorman whose Brown Swiss Nookwood Braiden Fancy received Junior Champion at the Illinois State Fair. Paige Newman was elected at the summer meeting to represent the club as the Holstein Dutchess and assisted with the passing out of ribbons during the fair for the dairy shows. Also a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary to any members over the last several months. Sincerely, Angie Newman OBITUARY PAYSON, Ill. -- Edith Clara “Eadie” Edwards, 83, of Payson, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday (July 10, 2015) at Blessing Hospital. Edith was born Sept. 6, 1931, in Quincy, a daughter of Leo and Margaret Klauser Wellman. She married Paul Edwards Jr. on June 11, 1952, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Quincy. He survives. Eadie attended St. Anthony Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Quincy Notre Dame High School. Eadie raised her six children and helped manage the family dairy farm alongside her husband, Paul. She always fed the bucket calves, and she drove the tractor for the hay baler. Page 7
After she and Paul moved off the farm in 1998 to “retire” to their first home, her pride and joy was her lawn. She mowed it religiously on her John Deere rider and mowed it right up until the very end. She enjoyed baking and sent several plates of cinnamon rolls off to college with her children and grandchildren. Eadie had also been a very active member of the Payson community. She served as a 4-H leader for over 15 years and had received the 4-H Leader of the Year Award. She co-chaired the milkshake stand at the Adams County Fair. She received Farm Wife of the Year in 1978 from The Quincy Herald-Whig. She was awarded the Payson Community Service Award in 1991 by the Plainville Lions Club. She was also a very active member of St. Anthony’s Church and the Altar Society and served on various committees over the years as well as helping with many funeral luncheons. Eadie knitted prayer shawls that have been given to patients in the hospitals, nursing homes and to many others dealing with illness. For several years, Edith worked as a bookkeeper for Haubrich Enterprises Inc. until her retirement. She was currently the bookkeeper, office manager and noon cook on the dairy farm. Paul and Edith received several awards for their hard work on the farm including the Conservation Farm Family-Governor’s Award in 1985. They also received the Western Illinois Dairy Promotion Heritage Award. Both Paul and Edith received Honorary FFA Chapter Degrees in 1998 from the Payson FFA for their strong support of the FFA program. They were strong supporters of the Payson School District. Edith was very active in the Payson PTA and held various offices and served on several committees. In 2013 Paul and Edith were the Payson Old Settlers parade marshals. For 30 years, they invited third-grade classes from Payson Seymour Elementary to their dairy farm. They conducted tours of the dairy farm and provided dairy treats to more than 1,500 students. Making beautiful oil paintings was one of her hobbies. She donated many art pieces to the church card parties and picnics and to other benefits. She was still in charge of the country store at the St. Anthony Parish Picnic and had been for many years. She still cleaned the church with other church members. Eadie took joy in hosting family gatherings and continued through this past year hosting Thanksgiving and Christmas. Eadie instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of hard work and being active in their community, church and school. NORTHWEST Greetings from the Northwest! Wow! I can’t believe where summer has gone! It sure was a busy one getting set for hosting the National Convention. September 13, 2015 · Mulberry Grove, IL · Hosted by B-J-Grove Holsteins The 2015 Illinois State Holstein Picnic was held on September 13th at B-J-Grove Holsteins in Mulberry Grove. There were over 225 members and guests present. Attendees enjoyed the beautiful weather and kind hospitality of the Clanton families. A huge thank you to the Clanton families for hosting this year’s picnic! We appreciate all of the hard work that you put into everything. Also, thank you to Amy Ruppert for providing the photos from the State Picnic for the Herald!
DAIRY JUDGING GOLF OUTING June 5, 2015 · Savoy, IL
The 12th Illini Dairy Judging Team golf outing was held on June 5th at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy. The event provided a way for University of Illinois alumnae and friends to get together and raise necessary funds for dairy judging team expenses, award scholarships to future Dairy Judging team members, and swap stories of the past. Twenty three teams completed the better ball scramble on a warm day in central Illinois. Midwest Dairy Association and the outing provided prizes. Jeff Butler (Butlerview Farm) sponsored the noon lunch Page 16
and George Kasbergen (Stone Ridge Dairy) sponsored the BBQ. Individuals and organizations also provided twenty-eight hole sponsors. Several Animal Sciences faculty participated in the outing (competing in the scramble or assisting in the outing). The winner of the better ball scramble first flight was the Erdman team. The winners of the 2nd and 3rd flights were Matt Heisner and Jeremy Huelsmann teams, respectively. The big winner was Chelsea Jean, receiving the $1000 Doug Geppert scholarship as a result of the outings. This year’s University of Illinois Dairy Judging outing raised over $13,000 to support judging team activities. The Cardinal/Cub tickets donated by Mike Turley were the big ticket item at the auction and were purchased by Edgar Busboom. Together, this auction and the silent auction grossed approximately $840. Mother Nature cooperated, and following the outing, approximately 140 individuals attended the pork chop BBQ prepared by Andy Buhr (Gifford State Bank) and Edgar and Kay Busboom and swapped stories with old friends. Committee members Steve Laesch, Jason and Tammy Oertal, Chris Kiem, Dan Hornickel, Gene McCoy, and HiDee Ekstrom would like to thank everyone for participating in this year’s outing. Middleton, Wis. During the once-a-year, opento-the public meeting, the service bureau for U.S. genetic evaluations will give updates on dairy cattle breeding research and its business activities. Specific topics will include: • Sire procurement after genomics • Importance of enhancing phenotypes in the genomic era • Genomics and breed composition • Using genomics as a management tool.
The Holstein Association USA board of directors last met at the 130th Annual meeting in St. Charles, Ill. For those who attended that convention, I think you would all agree that Illinois did a marvelous job hosting the annual gathering. Since that time, it has been largely business as usual for the Association. Our next board meeting is slated for Fresno, Calif., in November. Through July, Holstein Complete continues to show growth compared to the same time last year. There were 23,288 additional cows enrolled in the all-encompassing program to bring the total to 311,659 cows in 1,852 herds. Those herd totals were up as well over last year. Following a similar pattern, there were 30,804 additional cows in Tri-Star Premier bringing Holstein cows on the top plan to 360,764. Registrations also were four percent of pace with 218,790 animals registered.

On the flip side, herd classifications and the SET program was slightly off last year’s trajectory, down 6 and 1 percent respectively. Transfers were down as well. BOARD MEETING MINUTES May 29, 2015 - Bloomington, IL The Illinois Holstein Association Board of Directors was called to order at 12:55 p.m. on May 29, 2015 by President Brian Olbrich. Three staff, 2 guests, and 13 board members were present in a conference room at the IAA Building in Bloomington, Illinois. Roll was called by Secretary Tina Yagow and the directors were given a few minutes to read the typed minutes of the January meeting. Dale Drendel moved to approve the minutes, Aaron Heinzmann seconded, and the motion passed. Treasurer’s Report was given by Carol Jones and a motion to approve the report was made by Harvey Harpstrite, seconded by Joann Hartman and the motion carried. Holstein USA Report was given by Dale Drendel. Dale told us Holstein Complete herds have increased by 7%. Performance products and identifications have also increased. Holstein USA still looking for Field Representatives and have some new staff. The PDCA Calf Sale Report showed $58,850 for 29 head of Holsteins. June 5th is the Golf Outing at the U of I to help raise money for the Judging team and offer scholarships. Letters will be mailed to delegates and alternates endorsing Boyd Schaufelberger for Vice President of Holstein USA by State Secretary, Tina Yagow. Membership forms went out later than usual,
but are being returned at a steady pace and State Secretary Tina Yagow will send out a reminder in early June. In the past few years, we have held steady at just over 200 Junior members and around 500 Senior members. Members must pay dues by August 1st for their local club to get their portion of the dues payment. The 2015 State Show will be July 16 & 17 in Lincoln. Pat Conroy is judging the Open Show and Chris McCullough is judging the Junior Show. The 2015 State Picnic will be Sunday, September 13 at B-J Grove Holsteins (Clantons), Mulberry Grove 2015 State Sale will be October 24 at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Belvidere with a Board meeting the day before. Jason Swanson is the chairman and Eddie Bue is the co-chair for this year who will take over for next year. 2015 State Convention will be December 2&3 at the Parke Regency Hotel on the east side of Bloomington with a Futures Sale led by Larry Kleiner the afternoon of Dec. 2nd. Youth Committee Report by John Mitchell – about 15 Juniors will be team members at National Convention and there will be other juniors volunteering to work. The annual meeting to elect officers will be at State Show. They are looking at forming an advisory committee of a couple senior members and
the junior officers to keep meetings more efficient and organized. The Bylaws also need to be reviewed and revised as they are outdated. Juniors Connor Erbsen and Brock Irwin will be recognized at National Convention. Publications Report by Stephanie Stout the Spring Herald had 14 advertisers. The Summer Herald was sent to print a few days ago and should arrive in homes soon. There were 30 advertisers in the Summer issue. The Fall deadline is September 5th. Stephanie is learning the DreamWeaver program to update the website. 2015 National Convention report – Dale Drendel told us registrations are still coming in. Some of the tours are filling up. Over $150,000 has been raised and the Association is grateful to the clubs and individual members who have donated small and large amounts. The Trade Show has more than 25 booths reserved. 4-H DAIRY JUDGING CONTEST BOARD ATTENDANCE ________ The State 4-H Dairy Judging contest was held on August 22 at the Illinois State Fair with 51 4-H members participating. We had 34 in the Senior division and 17 in the Junior division. The 4-Hers judged 6 classes of dairy cattle; 4 cow classes and two heifer classes. The “Top 15” participants in the Senior division is based on the combination of their placing score and their oral reason scores. JUNIOR JOURNEYS SUMMER MEETING MINUTES
On July 15, 2015, the Annual Illinois Junior Holstein Association Summer Meeting was held after the conclusion of the Illinois Holstein Dutchess Contest. President Emily Irwin called the meeting to order. The first order of business was to approve the March 2015 minutes that were printed in the Spring Illinois Holstein Herald. Katie Carlson moved to approve the minutes as printed in the Herald and Bailey Hart seconded. Next everyone was given a copy of the Treasurer’s Report to look over and approve. Morgan Olbrich moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report and Payton Erbsen seconded. Following this, the officers and advisors gave reports. Reporter Bailey Hart reported on the scrapbooks at National Holstein Convention. Vice President Dylan Reed reported on the Illinois Championship Junior Show the next day. And finally John Mitchell gave an Advisors Report congratulating everyone on the hard work that was put in at the National Holstein Convention as well as the Junior and Senior Quiz Bowl teams who are National Champions. Next we discussed old business. A few IJHA members spoke about some fun aspects to National Convention as well as how well we did as a state this year both in competition and hosting. We followed old business with new business. Brian Olbrich, the President of IHA, gave a
report. IHA proposed to reorganize IJHA to have officers plus 3 advisors, each have a 3 year term so 1 advisor goes off each year and add a new advisor each year. We plan to have executive committee meetings prior to regular Spring and Summer business meetings. Connor Erbsen moved to approve the change to IJHA, Morgan Olbrich seconded. We went on to the election of officers. Emily Irwin opened the floor for nominations. The officers for the 2015-2016 term is as follows: President- Emily Irwin, Vice President- Connor Erbsen, Secretary- Bailey Hart, TreasurerPayton Erbsen and Reporter- Brock Irwin. Bailey Hart then moved that Glen Meier, John Mitchell, and Payton Erbsen are the signatories on the treasurer’s account. Then the group proposed judges for State Show 2016. The judges that Connor will contact and report on at the next meeting are as follows: Chris Lahmers, Perry Phend, Brian Behnke, Chad Ryan and Lynn Harbaugh. Hello Juniors! As the summer comes to a close and the fall is upon us, I’d like to say congratulations to all the summer show champions. A huge congratulations goes out to the Junior and Senior Dairy Bowl teams that were Champions at the National Convention. Illinois Juniors were well represented this year in all the contests, in our home state! Thank you to all the volunteers who helped throughout the whole week: we couldn’t have had a successful convention without you! Dairy Bowlers, let’s start studying for next year, where the National Holstein Convention is in New York! I hope everyone has a great fall harvest, and good luck to those showing at the fall shows!

Regardless of how many cows we have, how old we are or what state we live in, our love for the Holstein cow is a strong bond that ties us all together. There were so many highlights from the convention, but one of my favorites is that no matter who you walked up to, you already had something in common and something to talk about. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves at the National Holstein Convention this year and you were able to leave with a few new Holstein friends! Congratulations to our Illinois Juniors on your tremendous success and congratulations to Boyd Schaufelberger on being selected as the new Holstein Association USA Vice-President!
