DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois Holstein Association! I have had an exciting fall serving as Dutchess! After being crowned, one of the events I was most excited to hopefully get to attend was World Dairy Expo. I was asked to pass out awards during showmanship, and I was able to pass out awards during the Junior Holstein Show after I was done showing, which I would again like to thank Paula Bovre for the opportunity to do so. It was an amazing experience to get to stand on the colored shavings as Dutchess and to be able to be in the champion photos. I also enjoyed meeting and talking with both the Wisconsin Holstein Princess, Zoe, and Princess Alternate, Emily, during the shows. I was also honored to be asked to hand out awards during the junior and open Holstein shows in Louisville. Recently, my grandpa has been looking at old Illinois Holstein Spotlight magazines. It is easy to say that a lot has changed since the 60s and 70s. Personally, I have enjoyed looking over the class winners from the state shows that are pictured (cows, heifers, and bulls!). While the cows and heifers were valued at the time, they could not compete in today’s showring. In some of the magazines, they even had an article that was specifically noted to be read by women only which I found comical. I hope everyone stays warm this winter and had a delightful holiday season with family. A big congratulations to anyone who received an All-American nomination as well!

FROM THE PRESIDENT Come on down to Effingham for our Illinois Holstein Convention on Friday February 11th. The Effingham club is putting together a fantastic convention. These conventions are ALWAYS fun!! Congratulations to team Erbacres and especially John Erbsen on breeding the SUPREME CHAMPION at Madison, as well as the Canadian National show!!!! The rest of us have only accomplished this in our dreams! And how about our Illinois Junior members? In case you haven’t noticed, several of them have brought home the hardware this fall! Delana Erbsen, Nevin Erbsen and Ella Gunderson were members of the 1st place team at the National FFA Dairy Judging contest this fall. Nevin graciously let his cousin Delana win the contest, and he stood 2nd. Very courteous of you Nevin! Zach Paul and Rosalee Zehr were awarded the prestigious FFA American Farmer degree at the national convention. Well done guys! Payton Erbsen was honored as the recipient of the Judi Collinsworth Outstanding Junior Exhibitor Award at World Dairy Expo. WOW – nobody saw THAT coming! I mean – way to go Payton!! And it should really come as no surprise to hear that Kaskaskia College won their division of the dairy judging contest at World Dairy Expo – it’s just what they do with Aaron Heinzmann at the helm. Team members Rosalee Zehr, Addie Raber, Zach Paul and Chloe Hass absolutely dominated!! My apologies to anyone that I may have missed. We really do have a great group of junior members, with more waiting in the wings to garner their own successes. As I finish writing this column, a huge smile comes over my face – because it is the last dad-gum article that I have to write! My time as President is drawing to a close. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity. Hopefully I didn’t screw it up beyond repair. Oh, I will still be around – kinda like that annoying relative at Thanksgiving. And you know what they say….. if you don’t know who that annoying relative is…. then it’s probably you!!

Steve Irwin

Check out this issue and watch for the Spring issue for special features on the Junior recognitions mentioned!

A team of four high school students from Eastland FFA in Lanark, Illinois topped the National Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management competition at the 2021 National FFA Convention that took place in Indianapolis, Ind. October 27-30. The team consisted of Delana Erbsen, Nevin Erbsen, Alyssa Miller and Ella Gunderson. In order to compete in the national contest, the Eastland team first competed at and won the Illinois State FFA dairy judging competition in April. Following many hours of virtual and in-person practices and contests at farms and shows, the team then went on to represent the state at the national competition. There, the team competed against 37 other state teams and 148 individuals from across the nation, all tested on their ability to select and manage quality dairy cattle. The participants judged 6 classes of dairy cows and heifers and presented reasons for their placings. Also included in the competition were a general dairy knowledge exam and a herd record evaluation. The Eastland team now has the opportunity to travel to the 2022 International Dairy Judging Tour in Europe in June. Delana Erbsen, a senior at Eastland, led the team as the top placing individual overall in the national contest, winning the categories of Brown Swiss, Jersey, and oral reasons. She is the daughter of Kevin & Wendy Erbsen, Lanark, Ill. Team member Nevin Erbsen is a junior at Eastland, and is the son of Carl & Becky Erbsen, Lanark, Ill. He placed second overall in the contest. Alyssa Miller, a freshman at Highland Community College, is the daughter of Lyle & Codee Miller, Lanark, Ill. She placed within the top 30 percent of contest participants, earning a gold award. Ella Gunderson is a sophomore at Eastland High School and is the daughter of Rob & Kelli Gunderson, Shannon, Ill. Ella also placed within the top 30 percent of contest participants, earning a gold award. The team was coached by Wendy Erbsen, Rob Gunderson and Dan Koester, with support from Eastland FFA advisor Cindy Feltmeyer.
