Adopt-A-Cow for your Classroom or Organization Mil-R-Mor has partnered with Midwest Dairy and the Center for Dairy Excellence to coordinate the Adopt-A-Cow program through Discover Dairy. Lorilee Schultz of Mil-R-Mor in Orangeville, Illinois shares more with us about the program and the success it has had the past two years.

ABOUT ADOPT-A-COW

The Adopt-A-Cow program provides lessons to classrooms that follow Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards to meet school requirements and expose students to what the life of a cow is like. Not only do the students get to learn about their calf, but they learn how the farm is good for their community and economy. Lessons can be tailored by grade level. The program is completely funded by private donors and the support of the dairy industry. Midwest Dairy works in partnership with the Center for Dairy Excellence to coordinate the program that Mil-R-Mor participates in. This program is completely free. In 2019/2020, 99 classrooms participated in the program at Mil-R-Mor and over 3,800 students were reached. This number grew to 6,600 organizations in 2020/2021 and the number of students impacted was nearly 168,000. Lorilee Schultz shares, “Last year, there were about 1.7 million students participating in the program nationwide. Information from our farm went predominantly to Illinois schools, but also to parts of Texas and Utah.” As you can see, this is not just for classrooms. In 2020, groups such as Girl Scout troops and nursing homes participated.

LIVE GROUP CHAT

“At the end of the year, we do a live group chat,” shares Schultz, “Within 24 hours of going live, the video had the following analytics: • During the live event, we had 232 classrooms join us live • Total views since posted is 708 • Total impressions 9,400 people • I thought this was unique - all of the viewers were female and they were between the ages of 25 and 44 (those would have been the teachers or parents who logged on for the classes, but no men were signed on, only women, and then of course, the kids were both boys and girls • 670 chat messages, comments, and questions were shared by viewers throughout the call in the Live Chat Today, it has about 1,800 views. The 2019 video has about 1,700. Both can still be viewed on YouTube.”

FROM THE PRESIDENT Since my last column, the young couple pictured at the left have become first-time grandparents!! And we didn’t mess around either. We have TWINS!!! Cecilia Ann and Logan John made their debut on September 3rd. Both are healthy and thriving. Parents Todd and Chelsea are overjoyed! A huge THANK YOU to the entire Erbsen crew for hosting our 2021 Illinois Holstein Picnic at Erbacres Holsteins in Lanark on an absolutely gorgeous Sunday afternoon on September 5th!! Beautiful cows, beautiful farmstead, wonderful family, and great hospitality! If you haven’t attended a state picnic in awhile, make it a priority next year. You

won’t be disappointed. Also, congratulations to all of the winners at the summer shows, and best of luck to those competing in Madison and Louisville. Since I am short on wisdom (again), and since I received a few kind comments a while back for sharing words by Bonnie Mohr (granted, I believe the kind comments were from Howard Dust, and we all know that he fell asleep before he read it all), I thought I would share some more. Living Life Life is not a race – but indeed a journey. Be honest. Work hard. Be choosy. Say “thank you”, “I love you”, and “great job” to someone each day. Go to church, take time for prayer. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh. Let your handshake mean more than pen and paper. Love your life and what you’ve been given, it is not accidental – search for your purpose and do it as best you can. Dreaming does matter. It allows you to become that which you inspire to be. Laugh often. Appreciate the little things in life and enjoy them. Some of the best things really are free. Do not worry, less wrinkles are more becoming. Forgive, it frees the soul. Take time for yourself – plan for longevity. Recognize the special people you’ve been blessed to know. Live for today, enjoy the moment. - Bonnie L. Mohr Can’t argue with that.

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois Holstein Association! As someone who read the Dutchess Domain as a little girl imagining how cool it would be, I am super excited to be writing my own! Compared to what I read that my grandpa wrote in the Herald during his time as president way back when, I’ll try to keep the Cubs comments to a minimum. I cannot wait for all that entails during my year serving as your Dutchess! It was great to see many of you at the state picnic, and a huge thank you to the Erbsen family for having all of us. It seemed like summer went by in a blink of an eye. It was great for things to be closer to normal. Being able to show at county fairs and go to the National Holstein Convention are the highlight of my summers so it was great to have that back! While summer is my favorite season and fall reminds me winter will come in the blink of an eye as well, the weather has been beautiful! It was nice to be able to make hay not having to worry about frying my skin on an open cab. I hope everyone has a safe harvest this fall, and good luck to everyone who will be showing at fall shows! Regards,

Lila Sloan

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Oh my goodness, how do I say THANK YOU to the Illinois Holstein Association for such an honor. To say I was surprised would be an understatement. To my Holstein family, thank you, thank you so much for the honor and privilege of having the 2021 State Show dedicated to me. I also want to thank my family for coming and being a part of this honor with me. I have been so blessed to be a part of this great organization for the past 60 years. I cherish what the Black and White cow has done for me in bringing so many wonderful people into my life. My sincere thanks to all of you, Carol Jones

OBITUARY Charlotte A. Bingham Charlotte A. Bingham, 93, of Woodstock passed away peacefully on August 14, 2021, following a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. She was born January 18, 1928, in La Crosse County, Wisconsin to Alex and Eva (Ingram) Dahlby. She married John (“Jack”) Bingham on November 1, 1952, in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Charlotte grew up in Cedar Falls, Wisconsin during the Great Depression with her parents and three sisters in a house with no indoor plumbing. Charlotte’s mother played and taught piano, so the house was frequently full of music. The four “Dahlby Sisters” would sing hymns and the latest hit songs of the 1930’s while washing dishes. Charlotte attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where she graduated with a BS in Home Economics and Education in 1949. She taught Senior High Home Economics in Richland Center, Wisconsin, and later was offered the position of Home Advisor in St. Croix County for the University of Wisconsin Extension. Charlotte’s work brought her to the county fair at Glenwood City, Wisconsin where she met Jack Bingham in 1951. Jack’s passion was dairy farming, and after they were married in 1952, Charlotte embraced the Holstein world. Jack was herdsman and manager on various farms such as Hickory Creek Farm in McHenry, the Pat Williams Farm in Huntley, Lamkinland in Effingham, and Golden Oaks Farm in Wauconda. Charlotte worked alongside Jack in the barn and in the office while raising their three sons; Steve, Tom, and Wayne, who all value and appreciate having grown up on a farm. They declare that their mother made the best apple pie they’ve ever tasted. All the while, Charlotte was active in the University of Illinois Home Extension organization, mentoring young people. She made many lifelong friends while serving in various leadership positions, including President of the Lake County Homemaker’s Association board. She received the Lake County Extension Hall of Fame Award for Outstanding Service and Support in 2011. As a widow at age 86 in 2014, Charlotte moved to Woodstock to be closer to family. With her “zest for life” attitude, she made good friends in her new neighborhood and church, many of whom visited her regularly on her sunny front porch. At the Presbyterian Church, she co-led a new women’s group (TLC), which she thoroughly enjoyed. Charlotte was a strong and passionate person, with a good sense of humor. By example, she taught confidence, tenacity, respect, integrity and how to be a lifelong learner. She was dearly loved, and will be missed. Charlotte is survived by her three children; Steven (Nancy) Bingham, Thomas (Barbara) Bingham, and Wayne (Kristine) Bingham, seven grandchildren; Laura (Christopher “Norm”) Persick, David Bingham, Sarah (Michael) Putman, Jacqueline (Dane) Hasselbring, Allyson (Skyler) Sailors, Daniel Bingham and Jennifer Bingham, nine great-grandchildren, sister Mildred Halvorson, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Woodstock, or to the University of Illinois Foundation for the John (“Jack”) and Charlotte A. Bingham Scholarship Endowment Fund (773925). Illinois Holstein Herald

UNMATCHED DOMINANCE!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 8 of the 15 contests held over the past 5 years at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 20 of the 30 contests in these 3 contests over the past 10 years. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge

programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

Endless Opportunities Scholarships Last year Dairy Science awarded nearly $100,000 to our incoming and current majors. Award amounts ranged from $1,500 to $5,000. Applying for scholarships is made easy through a Common Scholarship Application that makes you eligible for university, college and departmental scholarships. Additionally, one third of fulltime freshmen received federal financial aid last year in the form of grants, loans and work study. You can contact scholarships@cals.wisc.edu with any questions.

Badger Dairy Club a World Dairy Expo

Student Organizations

Hands-On Experiences

Badger Dairy Club has over 80 members who all share a passion for the dairy industry. Joining a student organization such as BDC is a great way for you make a large state university feel like a small college because you have an instant peer group on campus. BDC creates opportunities for members to engage in activities and experiences within the college, community, and the ever-changing dairy industry. Highlights of the club’s activities include an integral role in managing and working at World Dairy Expo, hosting the Badger Invitational Sale, volunteering at the Wisconsin 4-H Dairy Bowl and FFA Dairy Judging Contests, and club trips.

Our major requires an internship which allows you to gain hands-on experiences. Whether it is working in animal health, dairy nutrition, farm management, A.I., or sales and marketing you learn while gaining valuable work experience. A one-of-a-kind opportunity for our students is the Dairy Nutrition Experience course sponsored by Purina. This provides students with a mentored, hands-on dairy management experience, networking opportunities with producers and industry professionals and increased awareness of career options within the field of dairy nutrition. And finally, we have cows on campus! The Dairy Cattle Instruction and Research Center is located within one block of dairy classroom buildings, providing access to cows during all lab sessions.

Learn to Lead. Learn to Succeed.

Competitive Excellence Dairy Judging

Dairy Challenge UW-Madison is committed to its students receiving a “Dairy Challenge” experience. In fact, within the curriculum we have the Nutrition Experience, Dairy Herd Management Practicum and Dairy Challenge courses where students are mentored on how to analyze a commercial farm and present their observations and management recommendations, honing skills that translate directly to this competition and their future careers. Our students participate competitively at the Midwest and National North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge competitions. At the 2021 Virtual National Contest, UW was one of ten teams earning recognition. We feel the ability of our students to excel in this competitive format speaks to the quality of their education. UW Dairy Science majors graduate with a sophisticated knowledge of the science of dairying, and they learn to communicate their expertise.

UW-Madison’s dairy judging program has a tradition of success that continues today. At the National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Contest UW has won the contest 9 times since 1985. Since 1980 we have been in the top 5 placing teams in all but 4 contests. Our coaches are highly regarded for their “cow ability” and talent to teach students about functional type and presenting winning oral reasons. The judging team normally numbers about 15 students with each of them guaranteed a contest to compete in. In fact, a majority of team members will participate in three or four contests over their collegiate judging career. The dairy judging team competes in the fall and we send teams to the Pennsylvania All-American (PA), North American (KY), Fort Worth Stock Show (TX) and World Dairy Expo (WI) contests.

2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic Several Holstein enthusiasts enjoyed the day at New Day Dairy for the 2021 Iowa Holstein Association Picnic. Thank you to the Dan & Lynn Bolin and family for hosting this year’s picnic! New Day Dairy is owned and operated by Dan & Lynn Bolin along with their family. Rita the robot (the first AMS Galaxy in Iowa) has milked their 120 cows since 2015 in a new naturally vented freestall barn with a GuestBarn overlooking it. Guests from across the country come to #sleepwiththecows and experience the grandeur of the Holstein cow. Their exclusively Holstein herd milks 3.0x/day with 4.25%F and 3.05%P. They raise all their own replacements and grow most of their crops on 200+ acres. Although Dan has purchased quality Registered Holstein heifers & cows from others, he is most proud of the homegrown breeding he has done creating great healthy productive dairy cows. Today Dan breeds for health & wellness, calving ease, high components, and robot characteristics. Dan is quick to use the best polled and sometimes red and white bulls (especially for the kids).

Think of what a round of embryos from Smashing and one of the good Red and White sires can do for your breeding or show ring program, here or internationally! Our plan is to not breed her until June of 2022, so both IVF and conventional flushing are opportunities for you!

Her second dam is “VG-88” with 1380F and 1101P. The next three dams are all “Very Good” and “Excellent” with records to 1349 lbs. of butterfat.

She’s by Jordy from an “Excellent” Res. Jr. All-American Milking Yearling dam with 1207F.

She freshened at 1-11 and is entered at Madison as a Fall Yearling in Milk.

Smashing-Red won the Fall Yearling Class at the 2021 Midwest National Spring Red and White Show, Iowa Holstein Show, Wisconsin Championship Red and White Show, the Iowa State Fair and the Iowa Delco Show.

Her dam, Marilie Gentleman Karmina, is an “Excellent-94” three time All-American in milking form with 1344F, a registered Ayrshire that milks like a Holstein. Her sire is the time-honored Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette, a plus proven, leading sire of All-Americans for many years.

Karuba is a daughter of one of the best cows in North America today, regardless of breed.

Think of those beautiful, fashionable F1 calves that can be directly entered in the Red and White Herd Book with a $10 Certificate of Identification (CID) from the Holstein Association. They can then be entered in many of the Red and White Open Shows in several states. And they’ll also be eligible for most Junior Dairy Shows throughout the United States.

Consider for your herd a round of embryos from Karuba by Altitude, Unstoppable, Jordy, Warrior, or Diamondback! Think of the benefit in hybrid vigor for health and reproduction.

Regardless of your breed of choice or your country of origin, Karuba is one to look at while you’re at World Dairy Expo.

35th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity

August 14, 2021 • Wisconsin State Fair Park, West Allis • Judge: Brian Kelroy

The 35th Annual WHA All-Breeds Futurity, or “Cow Prom” as many state fair attendees call it, was held Saturday, August 14 in West Allis, Wis. Judge Brian Kelroy of Deforest, Wis., judged and placed seven outstanding 3-year-old cows. A total of $5,483 in purse money and special awards was split amongst the owners of the seven entries that competed at the show. Coming out on top was Dreamfix Splash of Sun-ET exhibited by Landon and Mylie Wendorf, Kylie Nickels, and Christian Sachse, Ixonia. They took home a $1,500 prize sponsored by Compeer Financial, as well as Best Bred & Owned sponsored by Wisconsin Holstein Association and Best Udder of Show sponsored by CentralStar Cooperative. Second place went to Ryan-Vu Doorman Maiti-ET exhibited by Ryan-Vu Holsteins of Fond du Lac. They were awarded $750 sponsored by International Protein Sires. Third place was awarded to Milgene Jezabels Dream-Red exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farm of Hustisford. They received $500 sponsored by Agropur. The top placing junior owned entry was How-Law Defender Raindrop exhibited by Dana Johnson of Tomah. She was presented an award sponsored by Angela Davis Brown, Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys, and a $50 prize sponsored by the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association. Top Milk Production and Top Fat and Protein Production was awarded to Milgene Defiant Triday exhibited by Hildebrandt Family Farms. They were awarded two $25 cash prizes sponsored by Brian Greenman, Rural Mural Insurance Agent. While the show is focused on the cows, their exhibitors were also looking their finest to compete for Best Dressed Awards. Best Dressed Junior went to Dana Johnson, Tomah, sponsored by the Barron County Junior Holstein Association. Ty Hildebrandt of Hustisford won Best Dressed Adult Male sponsored by Robert and Karyn Schauf. Yvonne Preder of Scenic-Edge Holsteins sponsored the Best Dressed Adult Female award, which was given to Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac. The evening’s program was led by the Mistresses of Ceremonies, Jill Makovec and Nicole Breunig. They introduced the dignitaries in attendance, cows, and award sponsors. Tim Baumgartner was in attendance as a representative for Compeer Financial, and representing International Protein Sires was Ron Sersland, owner. Royalty from across Wisconsin attended the event as well, including Zoe Ertel, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess; Emily Stumpf, Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant, Julia Nunes, Alice in Dairyland; and Cayley Vande Berg, Wisconsin Fairest of the Fair. The Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity would not be possible without the generous donations from our major sponsors, Compeer Financial, International Protein Sires, and Agropur. We would also like to thank all of the committee members, volunteers, and additional sponsors that helped make this event possible. We hope we will see everyone at the 2022 WHA All-Breeds Futurity Show at next year’s Wisconsin State Fair. 32 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2021

Also finished the year with a bang with the cattle from District Show to Central WI State Fair. A great year for our partners with Luncrest Kenosha Whack 1892 and a cow we purchased from Ridge-Rail, Dex Crush.

BOARD MEETING September 5, 2021 · Lanark, IL The Board of Directors of the Illinois Holstein Association met September 5, 2021 at Erbacres Holsteins in Lanark in conjunction with the fall picnic. President Steve Irwin called the meeting to order at 2pm with eight board members and four guests present. Secretary Sarah Lenkaitis distributed copies of the minutes from the January Executive Committee meeting for reference. There were no minutes for the Board of Directors to approve. Carol Jones presented the Treasurer’s Report. David Shanks moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report, Herb Schmiedeskamp seconded, and the motion carried. Editor Stephanie Hammerly reminded the board the deadline to be a part of the fall issue of Midwest Holsteins is quickly approaching. After gauging interest in participating, a motion was made by Herb Schmiedeskamp to participate in fall issue of Midwest Holsteins. Jerry Smith seconded, and the motion carried. On behalf of the Juniors, Lila Sloan provided a recap of their recent activities including Spring Thing and National Holstein Convention. It was noted that the National Holstein Convention schedule was challenging this year with several tour activities conflicting with the junior contests. OLD BUSINESS The Youth Committee Report presented at the January Executive Committee meeting requested $3,000.00 from the association to be used for travel to National Convention in Pennsylvania, if held. There would be approximately 20 youth participating along with coaches and two junior advisors. The Youth Committee Report was approved with an amendment of the budget to -$1,500 and noted the board would reevaluate when more detail on National Holstein Convention cost and any fundraisers would be available. Based on the financial report of the Junior account presented, the board decided to keep the budget at -$1,500. Because there was not a 2021 Illinois Holstein Convention, the 2021 annual meeting was held in conjunction with the Illinois Championship Show on July 7. At the meeting, two new board members were appointed. Beth Weas Cash is taking over the vacant Director Seat for Mississippi Valley (term expires 2023). Brian Olbrich is taking over the vacant Director Seat for McHenry-Lake (term expires 2022). NEW BUSINESS Dale Drendel provided a brief report on the 2021 National Holstein Convention. He thanked the membership for allowing him to serve as Director-At-Large on the National Holstein Board for the past seven years. Next year’s convention will be June 27-July 1, 2022 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota hosted by the Minnesota and South Dakota Holstein Association. The 2021 Illinois Championship Show was held July 8-9 at the Lincoln Fairgrounds. There were 142 entries in the open show and 90 entries in the junior show. Currently, there is not a contract for the 2022 Illinois

Championship Show. Options for locations and dates will be discussed at the January Committee Meetings. Potential options discussed by the board included the Interstate Center, Lincoln Fairgrounds or Pontiac Fairgrounds. In addition, Futurity Chair, Angi Litow reported there were ten 2-year-olds and two 5-year-olds shown in the 2021 Futurity. She will be reaching out to members this winter regarding signing up calves for the 56th Futurity in 2023. At the 2021 Illinois State Fair exhibitor meeting, it was discussed that the Holstein exhibitors would be interested in adding a Summer Junior 2-Year-Old Class and removing the Dam and Daughter Class. The proposed change was presented to the board and voted on. Jerry Smith made a motion to add a Summer Junior 2-Year-Old Class and remove the Dam and Daughter Class beginning at the 2022 Illinois State Fair Holstein Show. Richard Meier seconded, and the motion passed. A letter will be sent to Sue Ann Claudon to confirm the change. Carol distributed rebate checks to clubs with a board member present. The remainder will be mailed to club treasurers. The breakdown of club rebate checks are as follows:

On behalf of the Effingham Club, Steve Irwin invited everyone to the 2022 Illinois Holstein Convention. It will be held February 10-12, 2022 at the Keller Convention Center. State Sale Committee Chair, Brian Olbrich is planning on having a Cattle Club online sale in conjunction with the convention. The sale will consist of 15-20 lots. More details will be available as plans are finalized. Tentatively, the board discussed holding the January Committee Meetings Friday, January 7. Potential locations discussed included a Bloomington area hotel or The Water Tower in Gridley. Jerry Smith moved to adjourn the meeting. Dave Shanks seconded, and the meeting adjourned at 2:50pm. Respectfully submitted, Sarah Lenkaitis, Secretary

JUNIOR JOURNEYS Hello fellow Holstein enthusiasts, My name is Alaina Dinderman. I am the reporter of the Illinois Junior Holstein Association. My family owns and operates Hi-View Farm where we milk 70 cows of many breeds. I am a member of the Snappy Snazzers 4-H club, where I have been the secretary for the past two years, and also a member of the Orangeville FFA chapter. This year was my first year attending the National Holstein Convention. I was on the Junior Quiz Bowl team. It was a great time experiencing convention and getting to meet new friends. My favorite part was spending the day at Hershey Park. Also, on September 5, I attended the State Holstein Picnic at Erbacres Holsteins. It was a great time getting to catch up with fellow Holstein breeders and to see great cattle. Thank you to the Erbsen family for hosting. I hope everyone has a safe and bountiful fall harvest.
