2021 ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION AWARDS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Dale Drendel has spent the better part of his life involved in the Registered Holstein business, through the local, state and national organizations. He has devoted the last two decades to serving the membership of these organizations while also engaging in meaningful conversations with consumers through several dairy promotion organizations. Dale’s dedication to the “greater good” set him apart and make him an outstanding recipient of this year’s Service Award. Dale Drendel is a 5th generation dairy farmer and 40+ year member of the Illinois Holstein Association. He was instrumental in forming our State’s Junior Association and served as Junior President from 1971-1972. He was a finalist for the “Junior Boy” award from National Holstein and also received his State FFA Degree. He met his wife. Linda, during this time when he was Junior President and she was the Illinois Holstein Dutchess. They were married in 1974 and began dairying in northern Illinois, building a tremendous herd of Holsteins, garnering champion ribbons on a national level. They are recipients of both the Junior Breeder and Senior Breeder award from our Association – making Dale part of a small group of tremendous Registered Holstein breeders to receive all three awards from the Illinois Holstein Association. They raised three children – Jeff, Carrie and Julie – who grew up with the same passion for farming as our recipient did. Beginning in the early 2000, the family hosted six Dairy Breakfast events right on the farm, attracting over 1,000 people each in a single morning. With the farm’s close proximity to Chicago, they also hosted Fuel Up To Play 60 events as well as Illinois Farm Family tours. While Lindale Holsteins dispersed in 2016, Dale continues to be involved in the dairy industry through his leadership roles. Dale Drendel served on the committee for the last two National Holstein Conventions hosted by Illinois – as a member of the 1975 National Convention Junior Committee and co-chair of the 2015 National Holstein Convention. He served as Illinois Holstein State Vice President and President from 2006-2010 and was an Executive Committee Member for nearly 15 years. Dale ran for the National At-Large Director position for Holstein Association USA, and then Illinois President Jason Oertel, had this to say “His wisdom and experience help us make many of the decisions for our state membership. He is very diligent in fulfilling his responsibilities, works well with members throughout the state and communicates very well in all settings. He and his wife have surpassed the 40-year membership recognition which is another indicator of continuing Holstein industry commitment.” He was elected to that position in 2014 and served for two terms, with a “bonus” year thanks to Covid. While in this position, he served three consecutive terms on the National Association’s five-member Executive Committee, chaired the National Show Committee for four years, and served on the Audit Committee and as well as the Nominating Committee. Outside of Holstein leadership, our recipient was President of Illinois DHIA, Vice President of Dairy Lab Services, and served as director for Foremost Farms, Illinois Milk Producers and Prairie State Select Sires. He continues to serve the greater good as Township Trustee. With years of service and dedication to organizations representing so many of us involved in Registered Holsteins, it comes as no surprise that this year’s Illinois Holstein Service Award is presented to Dale Drendel of Hampshire. Congratulations, Dale! SENIOR BREEDER AWARD Passion, dedication, and a love of agriculture are the driving forces behind our 2021 Senior Breeder, John Erbsen. Upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison John took a job with Prairie State/Select Sires (now Mid-America/Select Sires) as a dairy program specialist and continues in that position today. For 34 years, he has worked with dairy producers throughout Illinois and southwest Iowa, providing mating suggestions for their herd with the goal of producing profitable cows that work well in their operations and enhance their breeding programs. Many Select Sires daughter photos have been captured by John in the past 29 years as well through his Erbsen Photography business which specializes in livestock photography. Page 2

In addition to his work with Select Sires, John is actively involved in his family’s farm, Erbacres Holsteins. In 1999, John was chairman of the Illinois Golden Opportunity Sale held in Freeport. His choice from the sale was Regancrest Encore Dalhia-ET, a 6-month-old heifer calf from the highly regarded Snow-N Denises Dellia EX-95 GMD DOM. Dalhia’s maternal brother, Durham, was just beginning his rise to stardom and her full brother, Dundee, became quite popular a few years down the road. Dalhia went on to classify VG-89 and made over 29,000 as a 2-yearold. Her natural son by Durham intrigued the Select Sires sire analysts and he headed to Plain City, Ohio. While some would question the inbreeding, John felt that Durham x Dalhia would be a fantastic cross. And he was correct! Erbacres Damion went on to classify EX-96 and was among the highest type sires of his time. When looking at pedigrees today, many of the top scoring cows and/or show winners have Damion in their pedigree. Dalhia produced several outstanding daughters as well including Hi Metro Dee EX-93 2E, Shottle Divine EX-90 and Advent Drama EX-90 2E, all over 31,000M. Quite possibly the most influential daughter for John’s breeding program was Skychief Dellia EX-91. Her daughter Lyster Doriah EX-93 2E produced several daughters, many of which were merchandised, but the daughter that is probably best known in Illinois is Erbacres Atwood Divinity-ET EX-94 2E, Res. Jr. All-American Aged Cow 2017, a 2x Grand Champion at the Illinois Championship Junior Show and All-Illinois winner. In 2006, John was involved in the purchase of another individual, KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET, with Mike Deaver and Norman Nabholz. Apple has certainly exceeded any and all expectations from the day of that purchase. Later that year she became the first red and white to win a milking cow class in the black and white Holstein show at World Dairy Expo and was named Unanimous All-American Junior 2-Year-Old. In 2008, Apple was sold for 1 million dollars at the Global Glamour sale. John and his son, Connor, retained an interest and were the managing partners of Apple Partners, LLC. John made many of the mating decisions for Apple and was responsible for raising and merchandising most of her daughters. Apple’s impact on the breed has been phenomenal with multiple Excellent daughters, including 15 at 94 points or higher and granddaughters up to 97 points. Many high type sons that have been used in herds across the country including Apples Absolute-Red who has been premier sire of the World Dairy Expo Red and White show for four years and Mr D Apple Diamondback *RC who was Premier Sire of the 2021 International Red and White Show. Several daughters and granddaughters have been named All-Americans as well. Apple captured Grand Champion honors at the 2011 Grand International Red and White show and is a two-time winner of the World Champion Red and White Cow honor. In January 2022, Apple was named All-Time Red World Champion by Holstein International. John invested in one of Apple’s daughters with friends, Francisco and Sofia Rodriquez of Colganados Genetics in 2013. This Redburst daughter, Miss Apple Snapple, sold to Milk Source Genetics as a junior 2-year-old and went on to be named All-American Red and White Junior 2-YearOld in 2015. Snapple is now EX-96 2E and is a three time Unanimous AllAmerican Red and White winner. Her daughter, Erbacres Snapple ShakiraET sold to Ferme Jacobs and Associates. 2021 has been an incredible year for Shakira, first scoring EX-97, then claiming Grand Champion honors at the International Holstein Show and Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo. Her winning ways continued a month later at the Canadian National Show where she was once again Grand Champion. Despite his success, John remains humble and knows that success is not possible without lots of hard work, dedication, and persistence. John has served on the Illinois Holstein board several terms, has chaired two successful state sales and is currently an executive committee member. He is very active in his church as an official board member, worship leader and usher. He assisted in coaching the Eastland FFA dairy judging team which claimed first place in the 2017 state contest followed by a 4th place finish in the National contest with son Connor winning high individual honors. John has also judged several shows across the U.S. including the 2008 International Junior Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo and the 2021 Midwest Spring National. He assists in making selections for sales including the Southern National spring Spring 2022

FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings, As I start my term as president of Illinois Holstein, I realize it’s going to be hard to follow in Steve’s footsteps. The last two years were difficult because of the pandemic, but Steve did a fine job. I want to thank the Effingham club for a fine job of planning the convention. It was really great - good meetings, the roundtable was excellent, delicious food, and good fellowship. My goal as your new president is to try to lead so that all breeders have an input in this organization, and that they might realize some benefit from being a member. I also want to be an encouragement to everyone. Einstein was teaching a class when his students laughed at him over a mistake he made. He said to his class that when he made one mistake, everyone started laughing. This means that even if a person is successful, society will notice his slightest mistake and they like that. So, don’t let criticism destroy your dreams. The only person who never makes a mistake is someone who does nothing. Our next gathering for Illinois Holstein is the Spring Thing in Bloomington February 25th and 26th. Additional events include the Clinton County Sale on March 26th, PDCA Calf Sale on April 9th and State Show dates are July 7th and 8th at Lincoln. Hope to see you there.

2022 Illinois Championship Holstein Show Updates July 7 - Junior Show July 8 - Open Show Logan County Fairgrounds Lincoln, IL Show rules & entry forms will be posted to the website: www.illinoisholsteins.com/calendar/championship-show/ sale, and he can often be found at the halter of the consignments for many high-profile sales. Faith and family are John’s top priorities, but the Holstein cow and the people associated with her have always been very influential. Congratulations John on receiving the 2021 Illinois Senior Breeder Award! JUNIOR BREEDER AWARD Breeding strong cow families has been a part of Sarah Butler’s family since the beginning. Starting off, her grandfather, Bob Butler pushed for greatness not only within his own Bluff-Ridge herd, but for all of the herds within the Illinois Holstein Association. Her father, David Butler bred the first All-Americans and Produce of Dam’s on a national level for the family. Most Illinois Holstein breeders recognize Bluff-Ridge Broker Jay EX-95 3E and Bluff-Ridge Mark Bea-TW EX-92 DOM that had great success in the show ring and turned into great brood cows with numerous offspring scoring Excellent. And now, Sarah continues the legacy with countless Premier Breeder and Exhibitor awards at both the Illinois State Fair and Illinois Championship Shows. As the legendary Bob Butler would say “That purple banner is all you really need.” In keeping with the words and legacy of her grandfather, Sarah has put together some great purple Illinois Holstein Herald

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois Holstein Association! Looking at the forecasted temperatures, I think spring is finally starting to come! Personally, I did not think we had too bad of a winter this year. We barely had any snow up in my area especially compared to last year. And while we had a few streaks of freezing temperatures, no polar vortexes stopped in! I remember last year my grandpa had told me that he was taking grandma to the Florida Keys for Valentine’s Day. I responded: “so that is when it’s going to be the coldest out of the year?!” He said it’s always warmed up by then… HA! Record freezing temperatures, frozen waterers, a broken overhead electric wire, and problems with the silos. But he had complained to me how it was cold in the IHOP he had breakfast in! Safe to say I am very glad we did not have weather like that again this winter. I hope everyone had a great time at the Senior Convention! Thank you to everyone who bid on the silent auction as the proceeds went to the juniors. I apologize I was not able to make it, as I had to take care of the “big operation” at home while grandpa got to go instead. Shoutout to Dale Drendel and the Wendlings for sneaking a St. Louis Cardinals’ calendar into the car for my grandpa to find when he got home. It made for a good laugh. By the time this comes out, Spring Thing will have happened. Thank you to all the adults who volunteered to help with the different competitions. Congrats to all the juniors who competed and to those who won and secured a spot for convention. For those who don’t know, National Holstein Convention is in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this year being put on by the Minnesota Association. I hope everyone has an enjoyable spring. I look forward to seeing people at Spring Show which will be here before we know it! Oh, and if anyone needs any bred heifers, give us a call. I thought I would slide that into here because “I am in charge of getting rid of them” according to grandpa. For people who quit milking, we are really starting to get off track… I hate for milking to last past 6 o’clock!

Regards,

Lila Sloan

banner show herds. In fact, this year Bluff-Ridge was the 2021 Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor of the Illinois State Fair and the 2021 Premier Breeder at the Illinois Championship Show. Bluff-Ridge was also the Premier Breeder at the Illinois State Fair in 2019 and 2015. Sarah has also had some great stand-alone cows on the local, state and national level. One of her first all-stars was Bluff-Ridge Dundee Jeannie. As a Senior 2-year-old, Jeannie was named Grand Champion and Best Bred and Owned at the 2011 Illinois Championship Junior Show. She would go on to win her class in the Junior Show at the 2013 National Livestock Exposition in Louisville and score EX-92. From there, Sarah reached new heights with one of Bluff-Ridge’s best “herd bull” bred cows in Bluff-Ridge Bones Dolce. Dolce, hailing from the Bluff-Ridge Broker Jay family, would not only score EX-94 3E, but also make just shy of 200,000 lifetime. Dolce would be Nominated Junior All-American Junior 3-Year-Old in 2013 and would win Reserve Senior Land of Lincoln Champion at the Illinois State Fair in 2015. Today, Sarah is leading the way with home bred heifers out of the great MS-Queens Manor Sanchez Beau EX-93. Also extended down thru the family, Sarah is recognized for her strong work ethic and love of the Holstein breed. The care Sarah has taken is reflected in the quality and longevity of the herd and the show string. Congratulations Sarah on receiving the 2021 Junior Breeder Award! Page 3

W

e are excited to welcome you to Hutchinson, Minnesota, on April 16 as we celebrate more than 70 years of Raylore Farm. Why a sale? The milking herd and heifers look great, we’ve got a team in place to manage the event as a family, and it’s time for the third generation of Holstein breeders to take the lead. We will continue to milk some cows “past their prime” and raise calves for the fourth generation to show. The Raylore Sale will feature 75 lots of show-age calves and yearlings, along with exciting young cows and proven transmitting dams. We’ve also connected with family and friends from across the U.S. to assemble an exceptional group of consignments. The classifier comes on Feb. 12, and we’ll be picturing the following week. Follow Raylore Farm on Facebook for sale updates and give us a call if you’d like to visit the farm - visitors welcome!

16-MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Summer 2021

2021 Illinois Holstein Association Awards ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN OF THE YEAR This year’s Illinois Holstein of the Year Contest didn’t include a nomination or voting process as has traditionally been done. Instead, the committee unanimously chose the winner as there was one clear stand-out – Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET. A cow that Illinois breeders from across the state have enjoyed following and cheering on as she became an international superstar reaching exciting milestones. The ”apple” didn’t fall far from the tree as Shakira’s pedigree is stacked with show-winning cows on both the top and bottom side. John Erbsen invested in Miss Apple Snapple-Red-ET with friends, Francisco & Sofia Rodriquez of Colganados Genetics in 2013. They crossed the Redburst daughter of KHW Regiment Apple-Red with O’Kaliber – a KHW Elm-Park Acme son of European show cow Descrausaz Iron O’Kalibra. Shakira looked to be following in her mother’s footsteps when she calved in as a Junior 2-Year-Old. Her winning ways started at the 2017 Illinois Championship Show where she was named Intermediate Champion and continued to World Dairy Expo where she was 1st Junior 2-Year-Old in the International Junior Holstein Show, and then sold to Ferme Jacobs & Associates. Shakira claimed first place at the Royal Winter Fair as well that year and received All-Canadian and Reserve AllAmerican honors. In 2018, Shakira was named Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo. 2021 has been an incredible year for Shakira – first scoring EX-97, then claiming Grand Champion honors at the International Holstein Show and Supreme Champion of World Dairy Expo. In fact, there were four generations of the family at World Dairy Expo – Snapple, Shakira, Erbacres Diamond Sparkle and Erbacres Hanans Symphony-ET (that sold in the World Classic Sale). Shakira’s winning ways continued a month later at the Canadian National Show where she was once again Grand Champion. In addition to her wins on both sides of the border, Shakira has had several top-selling daughters and has an Excalibur son 94HO19826 Jacobs Showtime*RC. Congratulations to Shakira and those involved with her!

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Dale Drendel has spent the better part of his life involved in the Registered Holstein business, through the local, state and national organizations. He has devoted the last two decades to serving the membership of these organizations while also engaging in meaningful conversations with consumers through several dairy promotion organizations. Dale’s dedication to the “greater good” set him apart and make him an outstanding recipient of this year’s Distinguished Service Award. With years of service and dedication to organizations representing so many of us involved in Registered Holsteins, it comes as no surprise that this year’s Illinois Holstein Distinguished Service Award is presented to Dale Drendel of Hampshire. Congratulations Dale!

SENIOR BREEDER AWARD Passion, dedication, and a love of agriculture are the driving forces behind our 2021 Senior Breeder, John Erbsen. Upon graduation from the University of Wisconsin-Madison John took a job with Prairie State/Select Sires (now MidAmerica/Select Sires) as a dairy program specialist and continues in that position today. In addition to his work with Select Sires, John is actively involved in his family’s farm, Erbacres Holsteins. Some influential animals John has been involved with include Erbacres Damion, KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET and Erbacres Snapple Shakira-ET.

Starting off, her grandfather, Bob Butler pushed for greatness, not only within his own Bluff-Ridge herd, but for all of the herds within the Illinois Holstein Association. Her father, David Butler bred the first All-Americans and Produce of Dams on a national level for the family. Most Illinois Holstein breeders recognize Bluff-Ridge Broker Jay EX-95 3E and Bluff-Ridge Mark Bea-TW EX92 DOM that had great success in the show ring and turned into great brood cows with numerous offspring scoring Excellent. And now, Sarah continues the legacy with countless Premier Breeder and Exhibitor awards at both the Illinois State Fair and Illinois Championship Shows. As the legendary Bob Butler would say, “That purple banner is all you really need.” In keeping with the words and legacy of her grandfather, Sarah has put together some great purple banner show herds. Also extended down through the family, Sarah is recognized for her strong work ethic and love of the Holstein breed. The care Sarah has taken is reflected in the quality and longevity of the herd and the show string. Congratulations Sarah on receiving the 2021 Illinois Junior Breeder Award! Read more details about our 2021 award recipients on the Illinois Holstein website at www.IllinoisHolsteins.com

2021 Wisconsin Outstanding Holstein Girl & Boy Features The Outstanding Holstein Boy and Girl awards are the highest honor that the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association can bestow on members. The winners of these awards are chosen based on their Distinguished Junior Member applications and an interview. Our 2021 recipients were recognized at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention at the end of December. Get to meet the winners, Hannah Hockerman and Brian “Mac” McCullough. Hannah Hockerman Being named the Outstanding Holstein Girl is an honor that I have dreamed of since my first junior convention. I have always looked up to those who have received this prestigious award in the past. Being able to receive the award would not have been possible without the help of my family encouraging me every step of the way. I am honored to be recognized as this year’s 2021 Outstanding Holstein girl. I live on my family dairy farm in central Wisconsin. We milk 700 cow with an additional 1,000 head of young stock divided over three different farms. Each farm houses a different age animal. I am very lucky to have an opportunity to work with and care for animals every day. I graduated from Westfield Area High School in 2020, where I was involved in several different clubs. I was a four year officer in my FFA Chapter, serving as President my senior year. I also had to opportunity to advocate for the dairy industry through forensics. I was an active member of our school’s forensics team during my junior and senior years of high school. Having been raised on a family farm, I have realized my passion of teaching agriculture. My ventures in the Wisconsin Holstein Association, local FFA chapter, and involvement in 4-H have helped develop that passion and put me on the path to becoming an agricultural teacher. I am currently a student athlete at Rock Valley College, a two-year technical school in Rockford, Illinois. I plan to graduate from Rock Valley in the spring with an Associates Degree in science and then transfer to a four-year school to finish my degree. I 38 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2022

love working in the dairy industry, doing daily promotional activities, and hands-on learning. I especially enjoy helping youth learn about where their food comes from. By combining all the things I enjoy doing, becoming an agriculture teacher seems like a good fit for me, as I can teach youth and advocate for the dairy industry every day. From 2020-2021 I served the Wisconsin Holstein Association as the Southwest District Junior Activities Committee representative. Having this experience as a Junior Activities Committee member has really shown me the passion of youth members in our state. It was a great experience and I cannot wait to implement these learning experiences into the Wisconsin Holstein Association as an adult member. I currently am an active member of the District 5 Junior Holsteins Breeders. This past year, I decided to take leadership and start a quiz bowl team for our group. My goal was for the younger members to have fun and experience the activities, friendships, and leadership opportunities that I experienced through the Wisconsin Holstein Association and District 5 group. My three Dairy Bowl teams had a blast at the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. Through District 5 Junior Holsteins, I have also had the opportunity to attend the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Convention. I have received many accolades through the years including 12 and Under Recognition, Young Distinguished Junior Member awards, and Distinguished Junior Member awards. In 2018 I was selected to represent Wisconsin in Michigan at the National Holstein Convention as a National YDJM finalist. This year I am representing the state of Wisconsin as a National DJM representative. I would like to thank my family and friends as I would not have been able to accomplish many things without their guidance. Mom, thank you for teaching me everything I know about showing cattle. I am also very thankful for your guidance this past year with the start of coaching the District 5 quiz bowl teams. Dad, thank you for always encouraging me to try new things. From softball activities to running heard health, you have always believed in me. I am also very thankful for your patience over the years as you helped me take on responsibilities on the farm. To my family, I am very grateful for your support over the years. From athletics to dairy related activities, you have covered chores and home farm responsibilities to allow me to follow my dreams and for that I am very thankful. I want to encourage members of the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association to find something they enjoy and run

with it. The Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association allows youth members to try new things and push their comfort zones. I was once in your shoes. With hard work and big dreams you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. Brian “Mac” McCullough I’m Brian McCullough, but my friends in the dairy world know me as Mac. I live on Rock-N-HillII Registered Holsteins with my parents Chris and Kathie, and sister Rachel. Our farm consists of 170 acres where we milk about 50 head and raise another 15 dry cows and 60 youngstock. Needless to say, my parents truly laid the foundation for my entire Holstein career. I’ve watched my Dad develop his herd of Holsteins from a group of “stall fillers” to one of the finest homebred herds in the state. This wasn’t achieved over night, but through the careful analyzation of individuals to create the perfect mating. He’s bred over 100 Excellent cows, and our current BAA stands at 113.2, ranking us 23rd in the nation. My dad, sister and I work together and very carefully select sires for our herd. My dad taught me how to read a stud’s linear, what to look for in a pedigree, and how to improve the next generation by mating. My dad allows me to create my own matings on my personal cows, which I take a lot of pride in. I love mating cows, and my ultimate goal is to breed a special one that could be nominated, or better yet, named AllAmerican. Showing has always been a staple of my summer and fall months with the highlight being World Dairy Expo. My family and I frequently exhibit at the District 6 Holstein Show, Wisconsin Championship Show, and World Dairy Expo. Wisconsin Junior State Fair has been my favorite show growing up. State Fair allowed me to connect with other Junior Holstein members and showcase the skills that I’ve developed. The past few state fairs have allowed me to showcase my leadership skills, as younger county youth have turned to me when looking for advice on how to prepare their animals for the show. In 2017, Chad Ryan and Lynn Harbaugh were looking for someone to help their main fitter, Jason Danhof, at the Wisconsin Championship Show. My dad put in a recommendation for me, and I was hired. For those that may not know, Jason has a renowned reputation around the world

for his fitting abilities. Knowing that I would be working with one the best fitters ever, I spent the week asking question after question, and watching with amazement to his precision and expertise. I took that experience gained from that show and soaked it all in like a sponge. Later that year, Chad and Lynn once again hired me to help Jason at World Dairy Expo. There, we not only fitted the show strings of Bella-Ridge, Ryan-Vu, and notable tie-ins, we also managed the World Classic sale cattle. Since 2017, Chad and Lynn have trusted me to continue help fitting their animals at many major shows. I’ve fitted for many respected breeders around the state, but I undoubtedly consider the Bella-Ridge and RyanVu string to be my “show-home”. Aside from giving me the opportunity to clip, Chad and Lynn have taught me incredible elite heifer raising skills. They know what it takes to develop the quality individuals that I strive to work with. I’ve asked what they do to improve feet and legs, what show diets to feed, hair growing advice, and how to present an animal to its best ability in the showring. Chad and Lynn have always given me honest and helpful answers that I could apply to my own animals. I’ve learned that in order to have an elite show cow, it takes an elite genetic family. I’ve always wanted a special show cow, so in 2019 I jumped at the opportunity to buy into an elite maternal line. A flashy mid-March speckled Doorman spring yearling caught my eye at our local sale. With approval from my dad, I purchased Budjon-Vail Doorman Harvest-ET. She went on to be Nominated Junior All-American for me, gave me a heifer calf, and put on a super udder. She won her class at our competitive District 6 show as a Junior 2-year-old, scored VG-88, and garnered a lot of attention at the 2020 Wisconsin Championship Show. Her heifer calf is also a standout individual, placing third at the Wisconsin State Fair this past summer. This fall, Harvest calved in with yet another heifer calf, an Addison, and scored EX-92 at 3-6. I look forward to continuing to work with elite genetic pools like “Harv’s” and potentially investing again if the right individual comes along. My ultimate goal is to build, own, and manage an elite show heifer raising facility that allows me to develop my own show prospects, while also raising the top 10 percent heifers from the home farm. I believe the more one-on-one attention I can give heifers, the more likely they can reach their full potential. I’ve been taught by so many talented people, and I can’t wait to showcase all that I’ve learned by doing it entirely by myself. I am truly honored to be named this year’s Outstanding Holstein Boy. Thank you to everyone who has helped me throughout the years, this would not have been possible with your support and generosity in sharing your knowledge. MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2022 - 39

Holstein Show Judge

Callum McKinven, Quebec

Callum co-owns and operates Lookout Holsteins and Jerseys with his wife, Katherine and three daughters, Tara, Brooke, and Alana, in Canton de Hatley, Quebec. Born on a dairy farm, Callum graduated from MacDonald College with a diploma in agriculture. A dedicated 4-H member, he came to appreciate a good animal, regardless of its breed. He is a respected breeder, showman and judge. Raising over 200 head and milking 30 cows, the McKinven family is active in showing and marketing animals in North America and around the world. They have twice owned the Junior Champion female at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, as well as an Intermediate Champion. The farm has garnered many All-Canadian and All-American awards. Callum is a Canadian Official judge who is internationally renowned having judged in over 31 countries around the world and for all breeds. In North America, he has judged every major show including the National Black and White Holstein show in 1997 and 2012 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, in addition to judging the Ayrshires, Jerseys and Brown Swiss.

he owns about 20 head of Holsteins, Jerseys, Milking Shorthorns, and a Brown Swiss. They also house a handful of show heifers for others. They enjoy showing competitively at local, state, and national shows and are proud to have exhibited AllAmericans in three breeds in the last few years. The Fairbanks’ breeding program focuses mainly on developing and marketing deep pedigreed cattle, with a goal of showing and selling cattle and embryos world wide.

Junior Holstein Show Judge Derrek Kamphuis, Wisconsin

Derrek Kamphuis and his wife, Valerie, reside in Brandon, Wisconsin. There along with his dad, uncle, and brother, they operate Kamphuis Farms LLC. Currently milking around 280 Registered Holsteins, they emphasize high quality genetics and work 550 acres of corn, alfalfa, wheat and soybeans. The herd consistently ranks at the top for BAA in the nation for their herd size and in 2021 they had a 109.7 BAA on 270 cows. Under the Kampy prefix, they have both bred and owned several cows and heifers that have earned AllAmerican nominations.

Red and White Show Judge Josh Fairbanks, Iowa

Josh Fairbanks and his wife, Samantha, own and operate Fairholm in Anamosa, Iowa. Their cattle are housed at Josh’s uncle, Doug Fairbanks, farm, where they milk 370 head of all breeds. Josh works full time on the farm. With Samantha, 44 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2022

MAKE HIGH-RANKING HOLSTEIN BREED AVERAGE (BAA%) LISTS

Earlier this year, Holstein Association USA released the lists of the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2021 classifications. A number of herds from Minnesota and South Dakota ranked in the list of Overall Top 200 BAA Herds for 2021. The top herd from Region 6 was Ryan Griffin of Minnesota. Griffin recorded a BAA of 113.6 with ten cows. Several herds from Minnesota and South Dakota made the top 200 list and respective lists for herd size. Minnesota Holstein Association would like to congratulate all of these herds for this achievement. To see the lists with all states included and a complete ranking by region, visit: https://www. holsteinusa.com/programs_services/baa_lists_2021. html. The Holstein Breed Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account the age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on your herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd.

The preference is the Lincoln Fairgrounds on July 5-8 at a negotiated rate of approximately $6,000. The committee prefers not to pursue the Pontiac Fairgrounds. However, they would like to continue conversations with the McLean County Fairgrounds for future show dates beginning in 2023. The judge will be contacted once we have selected a date and location. The committee discussed the requirement to show at your local District Show to show at State Show. The committee ultimately voted and approved to remove the rule requiring participation at District Show. The committee also confirmed State Show will follow Holstein USA rules for junior ownership for showing. Motion to approve the Futurity Committee Report was made by Jerry Smith, seconded by Brian Olbrich and the motion carried. Public Relations Committee Report given by Aaron Heinzmann - The committee sought input from board members on several topics discussed at the committee meeting. First, committee members and the board discussed the opportunity to take a bundled approach for sponsorships and advertising for breeders and businesses. Herb Schmiedeskamp made a motion for Aaron Heinzmann and Stephanie Hammerly to develop potential packages for 2022. Aaron Heinzmann seconded the motion, and the motion carried. In addition, the committee discussed with the board the number of issues of the Illinois Holstein Herald. It was discussed that the summer and winter newsletter issues could be replaced by postcard reminders. In addition, Stephanie will continue with the digital monthly newsletter. In addition, to help with costs, Stephanie will be inquiring if mailings for the association can quality for bulk nonprofit mailing rates. Following discussion, Beth Weas Cash made a motion for 2022 to include two print issues of the Illinois Holstein Herald (spring and fall) with postcard reminders as needed. Sarah Butler seconded, and the motion carried. Board members also reviewed a proposal from Cowsmopolitan. After discussion, Brian Olbrich moved to table the proposal until the February Board Meeting when additional information on the logistics and costs could be acquired from Cowsmopolitan along with a three-year performance history from Stephanie of the fall issue of the Illinois Holstein Herald. Jerry Smith seconded, and the motion carried. For 2022, the committee will look to restructure the Illinois Holstein of the Year nomination and voting process. The committee will also look into options to livestream State Show. Budget: -$6,800. Herb Schmiedeskamp moved to accept the Public Relations Committee report, Kevin Wendling seconded and the motion carried. PDCA Calf Sale Committee Report given by Herb Schmiedeskamp Spring 2022

- The 2022 PDCA Calf Sale will be held at the Livingston County Ag Fairgrounds on April 9 – time is to be determined. CowBuyer will be there. The committee is looking into having a showmanship clinic again as 35 kids participated last year. It would be a free event sponsored by Illinois Extension. Consignment information is due February 1 (except for spring calves, due March 15), and the selection committee is seeking 35 Holstein calves. Consigners are encouraged to have animals clipped. The committee discussed the holding a jackpot show in conjunction with the sale in the future, similar to what Missouri did last year. The committee is asking the association for $200 – the value of the half-page ad placed in the Illinois Holstein Herald. Budget: -$200. Motion to approve the PDCA Calf Report was made by Herb Schmiedeskamp, seconded by Kevin Wendling and the motion carried. Junior Advisory Committee presented by Brian Olbrich - There are open positions for Junior Advisors. Anyone interested should contact Steve Irwin. Spring Thing will be February 25-26 at the Chateau Hotel and Conference Center. While the hotel reservations will be on your own, a room block will be set-up. They are currently looking for volunteers to help with the various contests. As mentioned in the Junior Report, the juniors will be conducting a live and silent auction again at the State Convention. Also, they had a successful fundraiser at the State Show collecting $577 for Senior Showmanship and plan to hold again this year. The juniors are looking to raise $2,200 from their fundraisers and are requesting the association to match, if additional funds are needed. Budget requested -$2,200. Motion to approve the Junior Advisory Report was made by Aaron Heinzmann. Dave Shanks seconded the motion, and the motion carried. State Sale Committee Report given by Chairman Brian Olbrich The committee discussed and chose to table having a live sale in 2022. However, there will be a Futures Sale hosted with Cattle Club in conjunction with the upcoming State Convention. The sale will include 20-25 lots, and the consignment deadline is January 18. In addition to viewing and bidding online, there will be a pamphlet on the lots available at the convention. Budget: $1,000. Brett Richter made a motion to approve the State Sale Committee report. Jerry Smith seconded and the motion carried. Dutchess & Little Miss Holstein Committee given by Carol Jones - The discussion of the committee focused on ways to increase participation. While there has been great participation with Little Miss Holstein, there have been several years with only one or two contestants for Dutchess. At this year’s Spring Thing, past Illinois Holstein Dutchesess will take a few minutes to talk to the group about the opportunity, and the current Dutchess could give her speech. This could help find some potential candidates. At the contest at State Show, the committee discussed having a social party for the candidates to meet and get to know each other, and taking individual and group photos of the Dutchess contestants. The Dutchess and all other candidates will be asked to stay and hand out awards at the State Show. The committee plans to reach out to Midwest Dairy for additional opportunities for the Dutchess to advocate in schools and at other events throughout the year. In the future, the committee discussed holding the Dutchess and Little Miss contest at Spring Thing instead of State Show. The contestants could give their speeches to the three judges or in front of their peers at Spring Thing. This would address the microphone/sound issues encountered at State Show. Budget: -$1,000. Brian Olbrich made a motion to approve the Dutchess/Little Miss Holstein Committee report. Dylan Reed seconded and the motion carried. 2022 BUDGET PROPOSAL General Operations Dutchess/Little Miss Membership Public Relations State Sale Futures Sale State Show Youth PDCA TOTAL Illinois Holstein Herald

Jerry Smith moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Dave Shanks seconded, and the motion carried. Editor Stephanie Hammerly extended a thank you to 2021 advertisers and contributors to the Illinois Holstein Herald. New for 2022, Midwest Holsteins issues can include commercial ads, previously only breeder advertisers were allowed. In addition, Stephanie is working on creating a sponsorship package option to bring together Holstein Herald advertisers and State Show sponsors. Holstein USA Regional Sales Representative Tim Ewing provided the Holstein USA Report. With the current dairy economy, registrations were down slightly – about 4% with just shy of 600,000 in 2021. However, Holstein Complete was up 1% with about 1,400 herds representing 333,000 cows. A few changes have been made to the Holstein Complete program to make it more economical for small herds. Also, Tim encouraged everyone to check-out the newest episode of Holstein America that aired on RFD-TV last night. It featured Illinois dairy farm, Rolling Lawns. Holstein USA President Corey Geiger was in attendance and provided additional Holstein USA updates. Other year-end highlights included transfers being up 120% in 2021 with 49,000 – this included many family transfers with herds transitioning generations. In addition, it was the third year in a row that classification numbers had increased with 4% more cows and 6% more herds. The SET program was also up 9%. Holstein USA ATA processed just shy of 1 million records. Also, Project Elevation continues to move forward. This project includes re-writing the computer system to make improvements on the website and process to register animals and order tags. Upcoming Holstein USA events include the Young Dairy Leaders Institute Class 12 meeting in Fort Worth, Texas next week, and the National Holstein Convention in Sioux Falls, South Dakota June 27July 1. The convention will include a Genetics Conference. Corey also provided comments on dairy industry trends including changes in labor laws and overtime in several states, increased butterfat in Holsteins due to feeding and genetics, consumer trends in eating dairy versus drinking fluid milk. Dairy Education and Extension Faculty Specialist Dr. Derek Nolan provided the Extension Report. At the Illinois Dairy Summit event last week, there were 65 participants online. The event ended-up being online-only instead of hybrid due to the weather. A recording is available on the IMPA website. He also provided a recap on the 4-H Dairy Judging, 4-H Dairy Bowl and Superior Dairy Producer competitions. Last fall, the university started an I-Dairy Certificate program for undergraduates and graduate students. It includes 3-4 dairy courses. They have seen interest students that don’t have a dairy background. Also, students that have a dairy background, but are perusing other areas of interest and still want a dairy education. In the future, they are looking to put the courses online and potentially offer to others. Tricia Zehr provided the Youth Report. The 2022 Spring Thing will be held February 25-26 at Chateau Hotel and Conference Center. Tricia is still looking for volunteers, so please contact her if you are interested. Page 9

Jim Schluter made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Sarah Butler seconded, and the motion carried. There were no Editor, Holstein USA, Extension or Youth reports as all were covered during the Annual Meeting held earlier. OLD BUSINESS The 2022 Spring Thing will be held February 25-26 at Chateau Hotel and Conference Center. The registration form is available online and due February 15. 2022 membership renewals were sent out in early January. To avoid the $5 late fee, renewals need to be mailed by April 1. As of today, we have reached about half of our anticipated return rate. There are open committee chair positions for State Show and Junior Advisors. Interested members can contact Herb Schmiedeskamp for more information. Steve Irwin reported the Lincoln Fairgrounds adjusted their original quote from $10,000 down to $6,000 to host the 2022 State Show July 5-9. In addition, a proposal from State Fair Open Show Superintendent, SueAnn Claudon was distributed to board members. The proposal detailed what the show could look like if State Show was held in conjunction with the State Fair Open and Junior Shows. Board members expressed concerns with the different cow classes (State Fair combines several) between the State Show Junior Show and State Fair Junior Show. In addition, there are differences in the junior ownership deadlines as State Show is July 15 and State Fair is January 1 for cows and June 15 for heifers. Following discussion, Herb Schmiedeskamp moved to hold the 2022 State Show at the Lincoln Fairgrounds July 5-9. Jim Schluter seconded, and the motion carried. Aaron Heinzman provided an update on the proposal submitted by Cowsmo on an annual publication. Cowsmo Editor, Julie Ashton provided design, printing and postage costs. Aaron, along with Editor Stephanie Hammerly, anticipated the publication would work if the advertising rates and number of advertisers were increased. They would be targeting a 28page issue with 12 pages of advertisements. The issue would be available Spring 2022

at the Cowsmo booth at World Dairy Expo. Board members discussed an all-breeds approach, similar to what Missouri has done, could work to get more advertisers. However, members were interested in waiting to see how 2022 advertising performed now that commercial advertising is open in the Midwest Holsteins issues. Following discussion, Herb Schmiedeskamp made a motion to revisit at a later date in consideration for 2023. Dave Shanks seconded, and the motion passed. In addition, Aaron reported he had received additional information on having a livestream at State Show. Cowsmo Editor, Julie Ashton said the cost would be $1,500 for both the open and juniors shows. However, the Lincoln Fairgrounds doesn’t have the internet connectivity required. NEW BUSINESS Brian Olbrich reported bidding for the Illinois Futures Sale is now open. Lots will close, in lot order, beginning at 6pm. Lucas Clanton reminded members the Clinton County Classic will be held Saturday, March 26 at the Highland Fairgrounds. The selection committee is wrapping-up selections now, and the sale will include a few Jerseys. Herb Schmiedeskamp invited members to the PDCA Calf Sale Saturday, April 9 at the Pontiac Fairgrounds. The sale will start at 10:30am, and Cowbuyer will be there. New this year, there will be an all-breeds calf show at 1pm. Full rules will be posted online. For a small entry fee, calves from the sale and others brought in can compete. Herb mentioned they are looking for sponsors. Aaron Heinzmann made a motion to donate $200 for the show. John Erbsen seconded, and the motion carried. Aaron Heinzmann made a motion to donate $1,000 to the Eastland

FFA to help with the costs of their trip to the 2022 International Dairy Judging Tour in the United Kingdom. Lucas Clanton seconded, and the motion carried. BREEDER SPOTLIGHT 2022 Illinois Senior Holstein Convention Genetics and Marketing Roundtable Discussion John Erbsen of Lanark, Illinois has worked for MidAmerica SelectSires for 34 years as their dairy program specialist in Illinois and southwest Iowa. He has also been operating Erbsen Photography for 29 years specializing in livestock photography. Along with his son Connor, Erbsen is involved in Erbacres Holsteins where they milk 45 cows. Clint Harre is an owner/operator of Wilra Dairy and Grain in Nashville, Illinois. After graduating from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign in 2009 with his bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences, Clint joined his father and other family members at their multi-generational family dairy and grain farm. After many years of diligent research, Wilra Dairy and Grain is in the final stages of completing a dairy expansion project, including the construction of a new rotary milking parlor. Clint is dedicated to the long-term success of his family farm and the dairy industry at large. He resides near their farm with his wife and two daughters. Nick Sarbacker is from Whitewater, Wisconsin. Nick is the creator of the online livestock marketing website CattleClub.com. The mission of CattleClub.com is to provide cattle owners with a platform to market, promote, and sell their genetics through an online marketplace built specifically for livestock genetic sales and promotion. The website not only provides a platform for online auctions, but also an online shop fully-featured with interactive pedigrees, genetic information, photos, and video to help breeders sell all types of genetics. Nick and his family also have developed a small herd called Heritage Holsteins and own and operate Agnew Farms where they grow corn and soybeans. Social media marketing and genetic diversity were among the main topics of discussion at the roundtable hosted at the 2022 Illinois State Holstein Convention. Moderated by Dr. Derek Nolan of the University of Illinois, the Effingham Club brought together the diverse perspectives and experiences of John Erbsen, Erbacres and Select Sires MidAmerica; Clint Harre, Wilra Farms and Nick Sarbacker, CattleClub.com. All three agreed on they’ve seen rapid progress of both genetic and marketing tools over the last two decades. As the senior member of the panel, John Erbsen emphasized the importance of embracing change. Social media, primarily Facebook, was a new tool to reach more contacts and potential buyers when he was involved as a partner and responsible for marketing KHW Regiment Illinois Holstein Herald

by Sarah Lenkaitis Apple-Red EX-96. John explains, “We didn’t sell many embryos out of Apple as a young cow. Instead, we sold live calves. We were aggressive in getting them marketed and sold, and we were able to get her genetics around the world.” Today, she has over 200 registered daughters. You can see her progeny, and what they did for other people. And, that what makes the marketing easy, says John. For Clint Harre, embracing genomics early-on was key in his family’s success to marketing high-genomic individuals to A.I. companies. The family runs a closed herd and makes embryos with pre-release semen and the highest ten percent of their heifers – defined as two times their Net Merit value plus one of their Total Performance Index (TPI) value. The formula is carried thru the reminder of their breeding program where only breeding-age heifers with the highest values are bred using sexed semen, and the rest will be bred to an Angus bull or carry an embryo. Clint estimates less than five percent of cows will carry their own calf. “We’re breeding for things (productive life, fertility) that you can’t see. We’re trusting the data and that it will work,” says Clint. While he says he sees genetic progress being made, he’s also concerned about inbreeding. “We need to find a way to incentivize genetic diversity,” he says. As people began buying more items online, Nick Sarbacker founded CattleClub.com to see if cattle sales could also make the transition. He hosted his first online only sale in 2018 with his own animals. “We were able to reach new buyers that we wouldn’t have had at a live sale. Geographically, we had animals that sold coast-to-coast,” explains Nick. He’s hosted many sales on CattleClub.com since and found the key to a successful sale is the online promotion. People want to see photos and videos of high-type animals online three weeks before the sale, he says. The CattleClub.com platform works well for breeders with a group of animals to sell, especially breeders with an established brand or some name recognition. Nick encourages breeders to list their best by structuring the fee as a flat fee per lot, instead of the traditional commission-based fee. As evidenced by the three panelists, there are many ways to be successful with the Holstein breed and many options to market genetics. Everyone has a different area of expertise, and John encouraged breeders to identify and understand their individual strength and passion within the breed. Page 11
