BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Lindale Holsteins, Hampshire
Celebrate is defined as doing something special or enjoyable for an important event, occasion or holiday. After 42 years in the Registered Holstein business, Lindale Holsteins shared their breeding program with everyone at the Celebration of Lindale & Team Holsteins Complete Dispersal Sale on September 15, 2016. Dale and Linda Drendal began their herd in 1974 and have built so many relationships in the dairy industry. Holstein breeders of all ages attended their celebration to look through the pages of their beautiful sale catalog that matched the beautiful Holsteins that were being offered. Dale welcomed everyone at the beginning of the sale and introduced his family. Lindale and Team Holsteins have been recognized with many awards over the years including Premier Breeder at the Mid-East Fall National Holstein Show in 2009 & 2011, Illinois State Fair in 2011 & 2012, Illinois Championship Show in 2009 & 2014, Premier Exhibitor at Illinois State Fair in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011 & 2012, Illinois Championship Show in 2009, 2011 & 2012, Mid-East Fall National Holstein Show in 2009 & 2011 and Mid-East Spring National Holstein Show in 2009 and Premier Herdsman at Illinois State Fair in 2003, 2005, 2012, 2013 & 2016. They have also received DHI Herd Awards from Kishwaukee DHIA as the top herd for several years and their current herd average is 27,890M 3.9%F 1074F 3.2%P 882P.

A couple sale highlights included Lot #1, Team Durham Morgan EX-95-3E and Lot #90, Lindale Defiant Prudy-RC VG-88-3Y. Morgan was nominated All-American in 2015 and has been named Grand Champion of several shows over the years. She was purchased by Mike Garrow of New York for $10,000. Prudy, a fancy young cow with a bright future, was recently the 2nd place Junior 3-Year-Old at this year’s Illinois State Fair Holstein Show. She was purchased by Carly Reeverts of Rockford, Illinois for $10,000.
Dale and Linda shared a few words in their sale catalog, “How does one say good-bye? With tears of sadness, tears of joy, and hearts full of gratitude for a life on the farm with good cattle and great friends and family! Today we truly celebrate our life as Lindale and Team Holsteins and wish you the best as our past becomes your future.” Thank you to the Drendel family and Team Holsteins for all that you have done over the years for the Holstein breed and for the Illinois Holstein Association!

OBITUARY ___________________ Timothy Devillo Mundy, 55, of Belvidere, IL passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 surrounded by his family at his home. He was born March 18, 1961 in Belvidere, IL. The son of Leon and Patricia (Johnston) Mundy. He attended Belvidere High School. Tim Married Janet Hillard June 8, 1985 in Woodstock, IL. He loved to work on his dairy farm and run T-J’s Market and Dairy with his family. He was a member of Flora Grange. He loved to spend time with his grandkids and playing with his dogs Myrtle and Hortense. He is loved and will be missed by his beloved wife, Janet Mundy; daughter, Heather (Daniel) Travis; son, Timmy Mundy; grandchildren, Cheyenne, Morgan, Axel, Makayla Travis, and a grandchild on the way; brothers, Mike Mundy, Ellis (Dawn) Mundy; sister Pam Mundy; cousin, Joe Mundy; close friends, Kevin and Craig Hale, and Paul Kuhn. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ross Mundy. At Tim’s request he asks that everyone please dress casual. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in the family’s name.

The 2016 State 4-H Dairy Judging contest was held on August 20 at the Illinois State Fair with 47 4-H members participating. We had 33 in the Senior Division and 14 in the Junior Division. The 4-Hers judged 6 classes of dairy cattle; 4 cow classes and 2 heifer classes. The “Top 11” participants in the Senior division is based on the combination of their placing score and their oral reason scores. FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, Fall is now upon us and I hope you are all having a great fall. Fall is my favorite time of the year because the weather is great and we have a chance to see the fruits of our labor. Whether it be the newly fresh cows and the calves from that bull you’ve been looking forward to having some calves out of or harvesting the crops, either way, it’s always been the best time of my year. Reflecting back on the past summer I would like to congratulate all of the exhibitors for their accomplishments this show season. I had the opportunity to work the show ring for both the Junior and Open State Shows and couldn’t help but be impressed with the quality of the cattle top to bottom. One judge told me that there wasn’t one animal exhibited that didn’t deserve to be at a state level show and for that, I want to say congratulations to all of the exhibitors. I would also like to thank Paula Bovre and Joe Engel for their hard work chairing the show in our new again location at the Interstate Center in Bloomington. It was good to be back there again. Good news, looks like this will be a long term location for the show.
I would also like to say thank you to the Mitchell family for hosting the State Picnic. Everyone enjoyed their time spent visiting and catching up and doing it at a first class farm with first class facilities and cows run by first class folks. Thanks again for your generosity. Looking forward to the fall schedule I want to wish the exhibitors at the fall shows the best of luck. Many dreams are made this time of year for breeders and I don’t expect this year to be any different for Illinois breeders. The Illini Golden Opportunity Sale is also right around the corner and Eddie Bue has put together a great group of cattle for your consideration. Board members, please try to attend the board meeting on Friday. You will be getting letters soon and I hope that you can make it a priority to attend. Lastly and looking ahead to winter (notice I didn’t say looking forward to), I just wanted to let everyone know that the dates have been set for the Committee Meetings and Convention. Committee meetings will be held on January 5th and State Convention will be held on February 4th and 5th. Both events will be held at The Chateau in Bloomington and more information will be in the Winter Herald and on the website. Again, stay safe and good luck.
Hello Illinois! I am honored to be your 2016-2017 Illinois Holstein Dutchess and represent the Holstein breed statewide. I am the daughter of Brian and Mary Olbrich of Harvard located in Mchenry County. As the Illinois Holstein Dutchess, my first duty was to hand out awards at the Illinois Championship Show for both the Junior and Open shows alongside with the Little Miss Holstein Elena Olbrich. Congratulations to all of the participants in both shows and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your experience! I also had the privilege to meet the first ever Illinois Holstein Dutchess, Karen Ryan, while at the show, and she shared with me a few memories she had during her time as the Dutchess. Since then, I have been preparing my cattle for our county fair and state fair; handing out more ribbons and awards, showing and moving away from home for the first time into
college. I hope everyone had a great time at the Illinois State Fair and the State Holstein Picnic! Coming up is the State Sale on October 22nd. I am extremely honored to be your 50th Illinois Holstein Dutchess and to represent such an amazing industry full of wonderful, hardworking, and kind people you all are. 2016 ILLINOIS CHAMPIONSHIP HOLSTEIN SHOW DEDICATION
This year, the Illinois Holstein Championship Show is dedicated to George Kasbergen in honor of his years of service and dedication to the Holstein industry and the Illinois Holstein Association. George founded Stone Ridge Dairy in 2002 in Mansfield and currently milk approximately 3,200 cows. Upon moving to Illinois, George and his children: Carson, Grant, Brook and Garrett became involved in the Illinois Holstein shows and were very successful with many winners. George has tremendous passion for this industry and really appreciates good cows. When Illinois Holstein Association was faced with the challenge of funding the Championship Show and the exhibitors decided to pursue industry sponsorships, George agreed to assist with these solicitations. George has been a huge asset in this project has solicited major contributors for many years. FROM THE NATIONAL BOARD_____________ In June, the center of the Holstein world was in charming Saratoga Springs, New York. Our annual meeting and convention were special in every way, thanks to our great New York hosts. The convention sale was spectacular and the keynote speaker made it clear that the pace of the genetic change will not slow down. Retiring board members were recognized, including our director at-large, Corey Geiger, from Wisconsin. New directors elected include Peter Dueppengiesser of New York, Steve Keene of Maine, and Benjamin Newberry of Georgia. Iowa’s Mark Kerndt was reelected to the board. Recognized as the 2016 Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder was Joe Loehr of Calvary, Wisconsin. The Type Committee report was highlighted by the recommendation that stature be deemphasized by reducing correlations between stature and udder. The Genetic Advancement Committee featured the updated version of the Body Composite Index, which more accurately predicts the body weight of the animal, therefore making the Feed Efficiency Index more precise. A new trait evaluation was launched--
DISTRICT NEWS CLINTON Our district show held in Carlyle had 90 animals exhibited with Lynn Zehr of Graymont, IL as the judge on Sunday, July 17, 2016. Koll-Kreek Charly Peanut, an Aged Cow, was named Senior Champion as well as Grand Champion. She was exhibited by Koll- Kreek Holsteins of New Baden. Do-Del Atwood Fitness-ET, a Sr. 2-yr-old, shown by Jackson Brammeier and Patrick Telger of Ferrin was named Intermediate Champion as well as Reserve Grand Champion. Junior Champion went to Cornerstone McCutchen Patricia owned by Samantha Heinzmann of Carlyle. Lueking Dairy Farm received the honor of being Premier Breeder and Exhibitor. Holstein exhibitors, family and friends also enjoyed our annual lunch with milk donated by Prairie Farms. During our Junior Show on Monday, July 18, 2016, 54 animals and 17 exhibitors showed under judge Tyler Carter of Greenville, IL. DoDel Atwood Fitness-ET, a Sr. 2-yr-old shown by Jackson Brammeier and Patrick Telger of Ferrin was named Grand Champion and Best Udder. Heinz- Hope Atwood Rocket, a Sr. 2-yr-old, shown by Brady Heinzmann of Carlyle was named Reserve Grand Champion. Kera Delane Harre made her debut on Page 7
Livability. This is the ability of an animal to stay alive and will be displayed as a percentage representing the offspring’s deviation from the average. Being able to sell an animal for salvage versus the time and expense of dealing with dead animals is a significant economic factor. This new trait will be assessed as to its importance and whether it will be included in the TPI formula in the future. The effectiveness of the current TPI formula was displayed in the report, showing that the ranking of cows by CTPI does predict their lifetime profitability. The recent fertility increases in Holsteins was also highlighted. Stature was mentioned by GAC as an issue, with the intent of addressing the rate of

We welcomed two new little girls at the show this year! It saddens me to report we lost two members this year. We had a moment of silence before the show in honor of Thomas Richter of Aviston who passed away in early July. Donald “Duck” Netemeyer of Albers passed away early August. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY Greetings from Mississippi Valley Holstein Club! We gathered in June for a summer meeting hosted at the home of Rick and Mary Edward in Quincy, IL. We had many members in attendance and a great cookout meal was served. The district show was held on July 28th and was a successful day had by all. A meal was prepared and serviced to all the club members. Big thanks to Kathy Neisen for preparing the
increase in stature immediately. Other information included the announcement of a herd audit program that will check herds with high proportions of fullage show animals. The investment in our computer system has begun! We can assure you that it is in the processes of careful planning, which will result in greatly improved speed and service far into the future. The cost is considerable, but a large portion will be covered by our Reserve Fund. The 2017 convention will be held in Belleville, Washington from June 30 through July 1. This will be the first year that our increased number of delegates allowed will be in effect. Please feel free to contact us with any concerns or ideas about your Holstein Association. Gloria Neuhaus was selected to represent the club as the Holstein Dutchess and assisted with the passing out of ribbons during the fair for the Dairy shows. Hannah Weiman participated and won the Dairy Princess Contest on June 20, 2016. She will represent the Dairy industry at various functions and parades around the area. Congratulations to Ruth Shupe on the birth of a great-grandson Dextin Lee Aurthur Shupe born on April 7th to Robert and Rachel Shupe of Quincy. Grandparents are Gary and Shari Shupe of Mendon. He was welcomed home by big brother Devyn who is 4 ½ years old. Congratulations to the family of Ken Koch with the birth of a grandson Samuel Raymond Koch on May 20th to David and Meggie. Samuel was welcomed home by big brother Benjamin who is 2 years old. Illinois State Fair was very successful for the Thorman family. Good Job!! BOARD MEETING MINUTES June 9, 2016 - Bloomington, IL
The June 9, 2016 meeting of the Illinois Holstein Board of Directors was called to order by President Jason Oertel at 12:20 p.m. at the IAA Building in Bloomington, IL. Twelve directors were present along with 3 guests and 3 staff. No corrections to the minutes of the January meeting were noted, so they stood as printed. The Treasurer’s Report was given by Carol Jones who noted the Herald account currently shows a negative balance, but we have outstanding accounts receivable. Membership dues are about ¾ of the way to our goal of $20,000. The Operations account donated $5,000 to the Juniors reflected in the low account balance. A motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report was made by Rodger Koehn, second by Steve Irwin and the motion carried. Ed Smith presented the Holstein USA Report on behalf of Boyd Schaufelberger. Registrations are level with last year, classifications are up 20% and next year Illinois will have 5 delegates at National Convention. OLD BUSINESS 2015 PDCA Calf Sale Report – 32 head sold, average over $2,000. 2015 National Convention Sale – Burton Consulting, LLC still has not paid many consignors since the passing of Dallas Burton. The Executive Committee sought legal counsel to protect the Association’s liability and has sent letters to Burton Consulting asking when they will pay consignors as well as notifying our insurance company that there is a possibility we could get included in a lawsuit from consignors seeking to get paid though we are not liable. Financial Advisory Committee Report – A committee was set up to decide what to do with our surplus funds. They recommended the Board of Directors set aside an Operations Reserve in a checking account of $50,000 (two years’ worth of operating expenses), to also set aside $50,000 for a future National Convention in mutual funds that will grow, and the remaining amount, nearly $97,000, should be used as an Enhancement/Endowment-type fund also invested in mutual funds to grow. Ed Smith moved and Steve Irwin seconded to approve and implement the recommendations of the Financial Advisory Committee Report. The motion carried and President Jason Oertel will begin investigating investment options for the two accounts that are to be put in mutual funds. Fiscal Year Advisory Committee recommendations were handed out for Executive Committee members to review. The committee Page 12
recommended the fiscal year be changed to the calendar year and moving the Annual Meeting to late winter or early spring (within 90 days of December 31st). For 2016, the committee recommends a special voters meeting be held in the fall to amend the by-laws. Steve Irwin moved and Aaron Mitchell seconded that we approve and implement the recommendations of the Fiscal Year Committee Report, motion carried. Discussion took place about the timing of an Annual Meeting for the FY that ended March 31, 2016 at the September State Picnic. We would then have a short FY from April 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016 and plan that Annual Meeting at State Convention in Early February. PDCA letter response – Illinois PDCA asked each breed association to give their opinion about the value of their Association and what its purpose should be if it moves forward. Our Board of Directors regrettably but unanimously chose to mark “No” on the survey indicating PDCA no longer serves a viable purpose. NEW BUSINESS Membership: Membership forms went out in late March and a reminder was sent just before the June 1st late fee went into effect. In the past few years, we have held steady at just over 200 Junior members and around 500 Senior members. As of June 1st, we only have about 120 Junior members and 275 Senior members paid for 2016-17. Each Director was given a list of unpaid members (as of June 1st) with phone numbers on it so they can contact people to encourage them to send in their membership renewal if they have not sent it in yet. Directors might were encouraged to talk to the other Director or officers from their club and split the list and were reminded District Shows are a good time to cross-check exhibitors against the membership list in the show box and make sure they pay their dues before they are allowed to show! Clubs were reminded that in order for them to get the club rebate money, members must pay dues by August 1st! A handful of people have used the online form and Paypal to pay. Unfortunately Carol said Paypal holds the money for 21 days before we can transfer it to our bank account.

UPCOMING EVENTS 2016 State Sale – October 22 at Clinton County Fairgrounds in Carlyle – Eddie Bue, Chairman. 2016 State Picnic – September 11, Noon, Mitchell Dairy & Grain, Winnebago – Annual Meeting for FY 2015-16 and discuss/vote on bylaw change after tours. 2016 State Convention will actually move to early February 2017, hosted by the State as no club has stepped forward to host. President Jason Oertel will contact the Convention & Visitors Bureau to seek their help negotiating a deal with a convention center which will determine whether the event is held during the week or on a weekend. The Board would like to have a Futures Sale, but President Jason Oertel is seeking nominations for someone to chair the sale. The Annual Meeting held at this Convention will cover the fiscal year from April 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. 2016 National Convention, New York – We will have 3 delegates this year…Jason Oertel, Gary Janssen and Brian Olbrich…Gary asked fellow board members for their opinions of the candidates for office at the National level. June & October board meetings – Brief discussion took place of the possibility of moving the June Board meeting to July or another time that works better for Directors to attend and the same for the October meeting. Further discussion will take place at the next meeting if attendance and having enough members present to constitute a quorem continues to be a problem. ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES September 11, 2016 - Winnebago, IL The Annual Meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association for the Fiscal Year beginning April 1, 2015 and ending March 31, 2016 was held on September 11, 2016 at Mitchell’s Holsteins in Winnebago, Illinois. President Jason Oertel called the meeting to order at 2 p.m. with more than 80 members present and 3 staff members. Minutes of the last meeting were printed for everyone to review by Secretary Tina Yagow. Gary Janssen moved to approve them as printed, Ron Schaufelberger seconded the motion and the motion passed. The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Carol Jones. Printed reports showed the Association ended the 2015-16 Fiscal Year with assets over $180,000. President Oertel mentioned “net for the year” was over $80,000. The professional audit is still in process and will be done soon. A motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report was made by Andy Lenkaitis, seconded Rodger Koehn and the motion passed. Holstein USA Report was given by Boyd Schaufelberger who informed the membership Holstein Complete enrollment is up 4% on animals. Registrations are down about 3% but still the 2nd highest in recent years. Classifications are up 5%. OLD BUSINESS Membership: For the 2015-16 year, the Association had about 460 Senior members and 220 Junior members. PDCA: The 2015 PDCA Calf Sale earned $58,850 for 29 head of Holsteins. The PDCA has been surveying livestock associations in the state if they still see a purpose for the group. State Show: The 2015 State Show was chaired by Joe Engel and Paula Bovre in Lincoln, Illinois. Approximately 145 head were entered in the Open Show and 85 in the Junior Show. Dutchess/Little Miss: The 2015-16 Dutchess was Bailey Hart and Little Miss Holstein was Samantha Heinzmann. State Sale: The 2015 State Sale was chaired by Jason Swanson and held in Belvidere with a sale average of $3537 on 34 live lots. National Holstein Convention 2015 was held during the fiscal year and was a huge success thanks to the efforts of countless members of our State Association. Page 13
Update on IHA Investment Activities $50,000 is being invested by the committee with a broker as a future National Convention Fund and an Enhancement Fund of $100,000 is also being invested. NEW BUSINESS Proposed Amendments to the Bylaws: Amend Article I, Section 3 – The fiscal year of the Association shall be from April 1 through March 31 January 1 through December 31. Amend Article IX, Section 1 to read “A regular annual meeting of the members shall be held within 90 days of the end of the fiscal year. It shall be held at such time and place within the State of Illinois as the Board of Directors’ Executive Committee shall select for the purpose of transacting business as may properly come before the meeting”. A motion to approve amending the bylaws was made by Jerry Smith. Brian Olbrich seconded and the motion carried. Dates for the State Committee meetings (first week of January 2017) and the State Convention (February 2017), both in Bloomington, will hopefully be announced at the October 21st Board Meeting. Be it resolved to thank all officers, employees and State Committee chairmen and sitting directors for their efforts and accomplishments this past year. Be it resolved to thank all sponsors and donors for State and District Illinois Holstein functions. Be it resolved to thank the coaches and advisors of the Illinois Junior Holstein Association, University of Illinois and Cooperative Extension Service for their effort, influence and accomplishments in supporting the youth of the Illinois Holstein Association, as well as those who financially support the IJHA fundraising activities.
Be it resolved to thank Mitchell Dairy & Grain LLC (the Mitchell Families) of Winnebago, IL for hosting the 2016 Illinois Holstein Picnic. Be it resolved to congratulate the Junior and Senior Quiz Bowl Teams for representing Illinois in their competitions at the National Junior Convention. DAIRY JUDGING GOLF OUTING June 3, 2016 · Savoy, IL
The 13th Illini Dairy Judging team golf outing was held on June 3rd at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy. The event provided a way for University of Illinois alumni and friends to get together and raise necessary funds for dairy judging team expenses, award scholarships to future Dairy Judging team members, and swap stories of the past. Twenty-eight teams completed the better ball scramble on a warm day in central Illinois. Midwest Dairy Association and the outing provided prizes; Jeff Butler (Butlerview Farm) sponsored the noon lunch and
George Kasbergen (Stone Ridge Dairy) sponsored the BBQ. Individuals and organizations also provided thirty-one hole sponsors. Several Animal Sciences faculty participated in the outing (competing in the scramble or assisting with the outing). The winner of the better ball scramble first flight was the Meyer Electric & Farm/ Clinton County Vet Service & Milk Culturing Lab team. The winners of the 2nd and 3rd flights were Farm Credit Illinois/ Highland-2 and George Halpin teams, respectively. This year’s University of Illinois Dairy Judging outing raised over $14,000 to support judging team activities. The Cardinal/Cub tickets donated by Mike Turley were the big ticket item at the auction and were purchased by Edgar Busboom. Along with the silent auction, we grossed approximately $907 for the auction items. 28 teams completed the outing and approximately 150 individuals attended the pork chop BBQ prepared by Andy Buhr (Gifford State Bank) and Edgar and Kay Busboom, and swapped stories with old friends. Committee members Steve Laesch, Jason and Tammy Oertal, Chris Kiem, Dan Hornickel, Gene McCoy, and HiDee Ekstrom would like to thank everyone for participating in this year’s outing. It was a beautiful day filled with sunshine and a great time to visit with other Illinois Holstein breeders from across the state! Approximately 80 members were in attendance. This year’s Illinois Holstein Annual Meeting was held in conjunction with the picnic and Holstein Association USA Vice-President Boyd Schaufelberger shared updates from the National Association. Hey Juniors! I’m so excited to be your 2016-2017 State Reporter! Congrats to my fellow officers! I look forward to working with you all this year. Illinois had a great time at the National Holstein Convention in New York this June! Illinois brought home hardware for 1st place scrapbook, 2nd place digital scrapbook, 1st place intermediate speech, going to myself, and second place senior Jeopardy, going to Emily Irwin. In addition, both our dairy bowl teams competed very well. We’re already looking forward to convention next year in Washington State! Remember, if you participated in the worker auction at State Show, it’s your responsibility to get into contact with your buyer and complete your work! We had a great state show with great quality cattle. Good luck to those competing at the Fall shows! Also, good luck to the 4-H Dairy quiz bowl and judging teams as they compete in Louisville and Madison, respectfully. Let’s represent Illinois the best we can!
