The 2020 Illinois Holstein of the Year contest was held on the Illinois Holstein Association’s Facebook page and the winner was selected based on the number of “likes” received. This year’s contest received over 300 “likes” and reached nearly 4,500 people. The winner received 163 votes. Congratulations to Opsal Ammo Caleesi on receiving the new Illinois Holstein of the Year title! Sired by Ammo P, her dam is Opsal Doorman Callista-ET VG-88. Her next dams are an impressive EX-95, EX-90, EX-92, EX-94 DOM, VG-87 and VG-89. This makes Caleesi a potential 8th generation VG or EX. Bred by Joseph Opsal of Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, Caleesi is currently owned by Shana and Drew Lueking of LuckyKing Holsteins, Centralia, Illinois. Caleesi was purchased from the Opsal’s Ridge Online Auction on April 11, 2020. “She first caught Drew’s eye while he was scrolling through CattleClub in March,” shares Shana. “Soon after watching her videos, the whole Lueking family was set on buying Caleesi. We went to go pick up Caleesi on April 24th. We got to visit Opsal’s beautiful farm and see Claudette, Caleesi’s 95 point grandmother.” For a year of uncertainty surrounding the show season, Caleesi received tremendous show success, especially during a pandemic! Her 2020 show highlights include: Southern Fall National Show • 1st place Summer Yearling Open & Junior Show • Junior Champion Open & Junior Show North American Dairy Cattle Show • 1st place Summer Yearling Junior Show • 2nd place Summer Yearling Open Show • Reserve Junior Champion Junior Show To cap off a great show season, Caleesi was nominated AllAmerican in both the Open and Junior divisions and was later named Reserve All-American Summer Yearling and Junior AllAmerican Summer Yearling for 2020. Shana’s favorite show memory is leading her in the Open Show Junior Champion round at the Southern Fall National. “I will always remember looking at the judge walking towards me with the six or so cameras in the background. I will never forget the sounds of claps and cameras clicking!” Drew’s favorite show memory is when she did well at the North American Open Dairy Cattle Show in Circleville, Ohio because Caleesi “beat the best.” Looking ahead to what the future holds for Caleesi, the short term plan is to show her as a Summer Jr. 2-Yr-Old in 2021. In the long run, future plans include showing her as long as they can before turning her into a brood cow. Where does Caleesi now call home? Lucky-King Holsteins is located in Centralia, Illinois where they milk about 55 cows and raise around 60 heifers. The milking parlor is a double four herringbone. The cows can rest in sand freestalls or eat at two different feed bunks. Currently, there are two stalls for show cattle and one of them is where Caleesi lives. The whole Lueking family is involved with the dairy farm. Shana and Drew’s grandparents, Don and Marcella, live on the farm and help as much as they can. Their dad, Doug, works at the farm full time with milking cows being his favorite job. Their mom, Shana, helps a lot during shows by helping everyone get and stay organized, plus she takes pictures too. Shana adds that, “Drew and I love working with calves and heifers, especially our show animals.” Congratulations to Shana and Drew Lueking on all of their recent accolades with Opsal Ammo Caleesi! The Luekings will be presented with the 2020 Illinois Holstein of the Year award at the 2021Illinois Junior Spring Thing.

As I sit here on this blustery midFebruary morning at 4 am, attempting to write a column before heading out into the (-10) degree cold to start morning chores, I am trying to remind myself that things will get better. Temps into the low 40s are supposedly just a few short days away. Hopefully by the time you read this, most of the snow has melted. I remember saying on February 1st, to anyone that would listen, “Hey, December and January were a ‘piece of cake,’ so if February is nasty, I can handle it.” And I will. We all will. But it hasn’t been easy. I am certainly guilty of replaying in my mind everything that has gone wrong here these past few days; silage conveyors that didn’t want to run, two motors that burnt up, an underground water line that ruptured, requiring me to water the heifers with garden hoses for the foreseeable future, and the list goes on and on. Then, I find myself looking ahead to what might go wrong in the days to come, and believe me, I think I have thought of almost everything! Suddenly, I am reminded of the words of the incredible artist Bonnie Mohr. I thought I would share them with you.

Do not let the fast-forward pace of the world deprive you from savoring “the now.” Seek things that fill you with love and bring you joy. Have faith, it fosters hope – it makes the difference. Hello Illinois Holstein Association! I hope you are all staying warm in this freezing winter weather. Thank you to all the farmers that continue to work through the cold and remember spring will be here before you know it! In the past few months since the last Herald, myself and many other Junior Holstein Association members recently had the opportunity to go to a virtual dairy judging workshop put on by Derek Nolan, Melissa Irwin, and the U of I dairy judging team! I was proud to see so many Junior members attend! I would like to thank all who organized it and cannot wait to see more like it in the future! I would also like to make note of all the great “Febru-dairy” posts and campaigns I have seen this past month and I encourage our members to continue being a voice for dairy production year-round. Whether that is through social media, talking with consumers at shows and fairs, or simply answering questions your peers and friends outside of dairy production may have building trust between consumers and producers can seem like a small thing but have a large impact! I hope to see many of you at Spring Thing this March and that you have safe and healthy herds and families through this cold winter!

OBITUARY Donald F. Ellingson Donald F. Ellingson 96, of Poplar Grove, IL passed away December 8, 2020 at home surrounded by family. He was born April, 18, 1924 in Poplar Grove, IL, the son of Ernie and Fern (Flemming) Ellingson. Donald was a 1941 graduate of Belvidere High School and was a lifelong dairy farmer. Donald married the love of his life Genevieve Voorhies on June 22, 1946 at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church. Don was the first president of the Belvidere FFA in 1941. He won the county’s first Outstanding Young Farmer award and served many years on numerous dairy promotional and cooperative boards. He was on the school board when Poplar Grove began teaching Kindergarten. He also served on the board of the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church. Don helped start the Little League in North Boone. He was president of the Farm Bureau. He and Genevieve were parade marshals for the Poplar Grove Sesquicentennial. He wrote history books for his family and also for the Holstein breed. He was very involved with the Holstein Club. Don worked hard to turn Illinois into a national power in the Dairy Quiz Bowl competition. In 1986, he coached Illinois’ first national champion team. Two years later, he coached five of his grandchildren to compete at nationals in San Diego. Don was a 4-H leader and he loved the Boone County Fair. He was very proud that he never missed a fair and that his family competed at Boone County for 100 consecutive years. Don made his spiritual home at Poplar Grove United Methodist Church. He will be missed by all. Don is loved and missed by his loving wife, Genevieve; children, Robert (Sandra Brockmann) Ellingson, Terry (Kay) Ellingson, Denny (Janet) Ellingson, William (Wendy) Ellingson; grandchildren, John (Toni) Ellingson, Brian (Renee) Ellingson, Michael (Mary) Ellingson, Rebecca Ellingson Wydra, Ted (Lara) Ellingson, Steve (Natalie) Ellingson, Matt Ellingson as well as 15 great-grandchildren. Don is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lt. Joelbert Ellingson who was killed in WWII. Memorials in Don’s honor can be given to Poplar Grove United Methodist Church or the Boone County 4-H. Burial in Poplar Grove Cemetery. Page 3

Don Ellingson - Holstein Historian and Dairy Promoter With a passion for dairy promotion and a heart made for the Holstein breed, Don Ellingson was a coach, mentor, historian and an agvocate for the dairy industry. He shared his passion and love for the beautiful black and white cow with his children and grandchildren. Don’s dairy promotion efforts spanned over a lifetime of memories including a few of these highlights.

NATIONAL DAIRY BOWL CHAMPIONS
One of Don’s proudest moments was coaching the Illinois Junior Dairy Bowl teams with his wife, Gen. Many Illinois Junior Holstein members have fond memories of gathering around the table at Ellingson’s White Hill Farm in Poplar Grove spending several hours on Sunday afternoon learning more about the dairy industry, the dairy cow and Holstein history. Each Junior member, no matter their age, was met with a smile, positive encouragement and a National Junior Dairy Bowl Champions wealth of knowledge. Don and Gen opened their home and their hearts to many youth over Coached by Don and Gen Ellingson, Illinois won the their years of coaching, both the state teams and local Boone-Winnebago teams. SHOW RING SUCCESS
Memories of Don Ellingson almost always include a show ring story. From the kind of cow to the type of show shirt, Don’s breeding and showmanship skills were admired by many. Showing was a family activity and a family tradition for the Ellingsons. In 1958, the Northern Illinois State Holstein Show was held at Mooseheart. First place was White Hill Aristocrat Bess and second place was White Hill Aristocrat Queen. The story goes, the judge didn’t look at Don and Bess as they were circling the ring. After the class, Don said to the judge, “You never looked at us.” The judge replied, “I knew you were first when I saw her walk into the ring.” And Bess went on to become Grand Champion that day. Bess was again named Grand Champion of the 1960 Northern Illinois State Holstein Show in Grayslake.
DAIRY PROMOTION AND HOLSTEIN HISTORY
White Hill Aristocrat Bess EX-93 From TV commercials to radio promotions to writing Holstein history, Don was able to share Grand Champion Northern Illinois State Holstein Show the Holstein breed with so many. Don and his Holstein cows made a few trips to Chicago for 1958 and 1960 various dairy promotion events. In 1977, two Holstein cows traveled to Chicago White Sox’s Comiskey Park for the Ralph Garr Milking Contest. A local newspaper article included the results: “Ron Luciano, crown prince of American League umpires, out-milked Chicago outfielder Ralph Garr in a milking contest during Sunday’s pre-game Farm and Garden festivities at Comiskey Park...and that’s no bull!” In 1994, famous national radio jockey, Mancow Muller was doing a promotion at a bar near Chicago. He wanted two cows for a milking contest. Ellingsons were on the Chicago call list for cow promotions since they had recently shot a cow commercial at Oprah’s studio (search on YouTube for Golden Picture Picture Board Game Ad 1992 to view the commercial). Mancow had reached out to Don through an agent and was then included in the Rock 103 promotion. Writing and recording history was also a passion of Don’s. He published Illinois Purebred Holstein History in December 2006.
A CENTURY OF SHOWING
The Ellingson family showed at and supported the Boone County Fair, Boone-Winnebago Black & White District Show and the Illinois Championship Holstein Show for many, many years. In 2019, the family was honored for exhibiting at the Boone County Fair for 100 consecutive years. At the 1957 Boone-Winnebago Black & White District Show, Don, his son Terry, and his Dad Ernie, placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the same class. Their farm sponsored the State Show Champion Bred & Owned traveling trophy and Bred & Owned class rosettes for many years.

Distinguished Breeders honored by Wisconsin Holstein Association The Wisconsin Holstein Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2020 Distinguished Holstein Breeder and Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder awards. Erik and Brenda Gilbertson, Hollandale, have been named this year’s Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders while the late Glenn and Joann Brewer of Glenn-Ann Holsteins have been named Distinguished Holstein Breeder. Award recipients will be recognized at a future WHA event.

The Gildale prefix has been a familiar name among Registered Holstein breeders for more than 40 years. Erik Gilbertson and his wife Brenda are the fourth generation to operate the dairy, located right within the borders of the town of Hollandale. Erik grew up on Gildale Holsteins and Brenda also came from a Registered Holstein dairy, Cava-Lanes Holsteins in Reedsville. Today, they farm together at Gildale Holsteins with their daughters, Makenna (10), Elise (7), Naydeen (5) and Janelle (1). After graduating from the UW-Madison Farm & Industry Short Course, Erik farmed with his father, Mark, while also working off the farm at shows and sales. When Mark suffered a stroke in 2004, Erik made the decision to stay on the farm and continue the Gildale name. Erik and Brenda were married in 2009, and farmed in partnership with Mark until purchasing the farm in 2017. The herd they have built today is a result of breeding from genetics purchased from Canada in 1996 when Mark and Erik wanted to rebuild the herd following a dispersal a few years earlier. At that time, the exchange rate was in favor of the US dollar so the Gilbertsons were able to invest in Canadian genetics for an ideal price. The pair invested in high type individuals like Bridgewood Stardust Barbie, EX-93, who became a very successful member of the herd. She did well in the showring and transmitted her big, tall and wide frame with youthful udders to her offspring that still remain in the herd today. Since they started farming together in 2008, Erik and Brenda have improved their BAA by nearly two points, up from 109.6 to 111.1. The barn currently houses 18 Excellent cows, 24 Very Good cows and just seven Good Plus cows. Over the years, Erik and Mark continued to make trips to Canada to invest in new genetics. This allowed Erik to develop a breeding philosophy similar to breeders in Canada and develop an eye for animals. Two other individuals that were purchased that had an impact on the herd were Valley Lane GDR Nutmeg, EX-92, and Paradigm Formation Mint, EX-90. Nutmeg was one of the cornerstones of Erik’s junior showing career and was named Grand Champion of the District 3 Show two years in a row. Her Jasper granddaughter also did well in the showring, placing second in the 2013 Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Mint was known for her components and high scoring family members. This cow family has produced two herd favorites today - Gildale Storm Marie EX-93, and her daughter, Gildale Aftershock Maria EX-94. This breeding philosophy and eye for cattle led Erik and his friend Nik

Sutter to purchase Sunnyset Mason Trixie EX-92. Her daughter, Ms Gildale Roy Tabitha EX-94, became a cornerstone of the breeding program and was also Grand Champion of the District 3 Show twice and produced a number of high type daughters. Another cow family that the Gilbertsons are working with is that of ValeO-Skene Atwood Stars, EX-94, who was the Grand Champion of the District 6 Holstein Show in 2019 and was owned in partnership with Brandon Flannery. Stars transitioned into an even greater cow with so much potential which motivated Erik to become a better breeder and caretaker. Erik also says it was a privilege to partner with a great friend who inspired him to work even harder. They lost Stars last summer but have several promising young daughters thanks to success with IVF. A recent purchase that the Gilbertsons are excited about is Our-Favorite She Vintage-ET. This Avalanche daughter was fresh last fall and is coming along nicely. She has high genomic type that comes from a deep cow family, Our-Favorite Unlimited EX-94. Gildale Advent Primrose sold as a calf in the 2008 “Gildale and Company” sale to Second-Look Holsteins. Through their care, she was the first Gildalebred cow to achieve the score of Excellent-95. She is a descendant of WindyKnoll-View Ultimate Pala EX-94 DOM. Another consignment in the 2008 Gildale and Company sale, Ms Ava Pronto Alice from Marty Kinyon, made her new home at Gildale and established strong red lines in Erik’s breeding program. Her daughter, Gildale Aso Attractiv-Red-ET EX-93, is a favorite Red and White Holstein at Gildale and transmits well. The Gilbertsons plan to continue breeding cows that produce good components while also exemplifying good type and longevity. “Milking cows is a daily thing for me, it’s part of us and our way of life. We take pride in breeding cows and it’s our hope that we can share success with other breeders as well,” Erik says. Management also remains a very important part of developing these types of cows. In the last few years cow comfort has become one of the most important aspects of care. Over the years, the Gilbertsons have installed mattresses, more fans, aisle mats, improved neck rails, and the addition of box stalls. Grazing also gives cows the ability to exercise and get outside during the nicer parts of the year. The Gilbertsons value care of heifers, too, so in 2016 a new heifer barn was built for younger heifers and breeding age heifers. Being active in the community is important to the family in addition to farming. Erik has served as a lieutenant at the Hollandale Volunteer Fire Department for 20-plus years and is the dairy leader for the Blue Ribbon 4-H Club. The couple also hosts farm tours for the Pecatonica Elementary School and Brenda volunteers in the classroom. Brenda’s passion for her fellow farmers led her to found the MILK 5K Run/Walk to support and create awareness around mental health in rural communities. In addition to shows, other Wisconsin Holstein activities are critical to the success and involvement of both Erik and Brenda but also for their children. In 2017, Gildale was the site of the Wisconsin Holstein State Picnic. The couple is active with the Iowa County Holstein Association and Brenda serves

on the District 3 Show committee. Installing a strong work ethic in their children is something both feel strongly about and believe that farming is one of the best ways to do so. They hope to offer their children this way of life and character building skills through the connections of the dairy industry. Erik and Brenda are looking forward to getting their daughters more involved in Junior Holsteins and 4-H as well as FFA later down the road.
Glenn & Joann Brewer, Glenn-Ann Holsteins – Distinguished Holstein Breeder
Farming is more than cow families, pedigrees and production for the Brewer family of Glenn-Ann Holsteins in Albany. Farming includes sharing a connection with those in their agricultural community and in the Registered Holstein business. Glenn and Joann Brewer grew up just a few miles apart, both graduating from Albany High School in 1962. The high school sweethearts both showed at the Green County Fair, but it was Joann who showed dairy while Glenn grew up showing pigs. After high school Glenn attended UW-Platteville to run cross-country. He stayed in Grant County after graduation, teaching agriculture and becoming a loan officer. Joann got her teaching degree and taught school in that same area. After daughters Tami and Traci were born they decided to move back to their hometown and raise their kids on the farm. They purchased the farm next to where Joann grew up, starting with 40 grade cows. As years passed, Tony was born and changes were happening at the farm. An addition was added to the barn, doubling the size and Registered Holsteins started to fill the barn. As Tami got old enough to show, Glenn would buy registered calves, many times heading back to the Grant County area to find them. It was a purchase at the Green County Holstein Sale that changed Glenn-Ann forever. J-J Jonette EB Bootie was purchased in 1981 as a September calf for Tami to show. Bootie went on to be the first Excellent cow at Glenn-Ann, the first to go over 200,000 pounds milk lifetime, and was a Gold Medal Dam and Dam of Merit. While Bootie did not flush well, the next generations added many offspring to the herd. At one time half the herd traced back to Bootie. During this time, Glenn continued to make improvements to the farm for cow comfort to increase production or make things more efficient. A TMR mixer was purchased and the “old part” of the barn was remodeled with new larger stalls and cow mats. Through the years, a power feed cart and bedding chopper were added to speed up and make chores easier. All of this helped in reaching a herd average of over 30,000 pounds of milk with nearly 1300 pounds of fat and 1000 pounds of protein. Through the years, not only did the cows produce more milk, but the overall type in the herd continued to improve. One example was Glenn’s favorite cow, Glenn-Ann Jasper Shiner EX-94. She was one of seven Excellent daughters of Glenn-Ann Durham Sharla, EX-93, and a descendant of Bootie. Sharla lived to be 16 years old, producing lots of milk and many show winning daughters. Her offspring won the Produce of Dam class at the district show many times, along with runner-up at the District 6 Futurity four times. Shiner’s daughter, Glenn-Ann Gold Chip Shiraz EX-92, was crowned Grand Champion at the 2017 District 6 Show. Glenn and Joann truly appreciated their homebred animals and always enjoyed letting youth borrow heifers to show after the kids became too old to show at the county and state fairs. Occasionally, they even let a good one

get away, including a Doorman fall calf that traced back to Shiner and Sharla, and thus Bootie. Glenn-Ann Doorman Bootie, EX-94, was sold to the family that bred Bootie and went on to be nominated Junior All-American in milking form. While the majority of the cows were all homebred at Glenn-Ann, there were a few exceptions along the way. The one leaving the biggest impact was Wilcoxview BC Phinale EX-93 GMD, also with over 200,000 pounds of milk in her 18 years. All animals on the farm starting with “Ph” trace back to this family favorite. Phinale was a special young calf for Brian and Tami during their time at Wilcox Farms in Washington and made the long-distance trip to Wisconsin after one of the Wilcoxview herd sales. In 2019, Phinale had seven living generations on the farm. Phinale joined a couple of other Wilcoxview bred animals – Wilcoxview Perfec Formation, VG-87 GMD DOM, along with a daughter of AllAmerican Wilcoxview BC Cami. Glenn-Ann Miss Pepperdine VG-89, a Rudolph daughter from Perfec, became a major genetic player at the farm. Pepperdine, her daughters and granddaughters helped put the farm on the world map and garnered a lot of international visitors, AI contracts and embryo exports. Her son, Palermo, was a popular Goldwyn son at Accelerated Genetics and great-grandson, Providence (Meridian x Jeeves x Goldwyn), did well at Semex. The breeding goal at Glenn-Ann was to breed for positive production and solid type as the first criteria when selecting sires. When the kids were young and showing, a portion of the herd was bred to high type show sires which also laid the foundation for families that continue to produce VG and EX cows. At the start of the 2010s, more emphasis was placed on cows that could score well but make at least 150,000 pounds of milk by the time they finish their 6-year-old lactation. Glenn always believed that consistency in feeding and milking was key to a successful herd. Heifers needed to be well cared for and fed to have large frames so they can calve in at 23 to 26 months. Cows needed to be fertile enough to calve regularly and healthy to remain in the herd for a long time. This philosophy earned Glenn-Ann Holsteins a spot on Holstein Association USA’s Herds of Excellence list in 2016, one of only four herds honored that year. Over the past few years a decision was made on the future of the herd. The tie-stall barn and stalls were showing their age, so the possibility of a freestall shed was discussed. But with Glenn’s passing in February of 2020 and Joann continuing to fight, and then losing her own cancer battle, the decision was made to start selling the milking herd privately after the August 2020 classification. That classification day resulted in a 109.6 BAA, placing Glenn-Ann in the top 200 herds for BAA. All fall, the cows left the farm as they were sold to nearby herds in small groups. With the remaining cows and a group of heifers calving in November, it left about 30 head that were sold in an online auction the end of December. While Glenn-Ann is done shipping milk, there are still many heifers and calves running around one of the two farms. With a few of the cows sold in partnership and a few others that might calve in before getting sold, there will be Registered Holsteins calling Glenn-Ann home for years to come. The next generation, Jaxson and Kinslee, need to know what it is like growing up on a farm. The family will continue to remain active in the Registered Holstein community to build on the legacy Glenn and Joann built and share their love of the Holstein cow with others.

Iowa Holstein Association Awards Distinguished Service Award
Master Breeder Award
At a young age Tom had a strong interest for farming and the Holstein cow. He was blessed with the opportunity to work side by side with, and learn from, one of the best - his dad, Joe Simon. Tom still remembers how excited he felt at a young age when his dad began purchasing registered Holsteins. Tom took an active role in the breeding and sire selection in the family’s steady climb toward a successful herd of registered Holsteins. In 1981 the farm achieved their first homebred Excellent cow. By the end of the decade, cows from Farnear Holsteins were recognized at the state and national level. Tom strives to provide a wide variety of genetics in their current breeding program. Farnear Holsteins has received Grand Champion and Premier Breeder at the state level along with several All-Iowa and Reserve All-Iowa honors throughout the years. This past year Farnear had the privilege of breeding their first 96 point cow as well as winning Grand Champion at 2 National shows. They have bred many popular bulls into A.I. including Delta, Delta Lamda, and Altitude-Red. Today, Tom and his brother Rick are co-owners of Farnear Holsteins. Tom has extended hospitality at Farnear for many state picnics, 4-H judging workouts and college judging teams. Farnear Holsteins has also hosted many visitors to the farm during Expo week as well as local and foreign visitors throughout the years. Tom has been very active in the local, district, state and national Holstein organizations. He was President and Vice-President of the Iowa Holstein Association as well as member of the Executive and standing committees and has served as a delegate to many National Holstein Conventions. He has assisted in organizing many District 8 Holstein and Iowa Holstein Conventions. In 2014, he was part of the planning committee for the National Holstein Convention that was held in Dubuque and co-chair of the National Sale Committee. Farnear Holsteins also hosted one of the farm tours. He was on the Dairy Foundation Board and served ten years on the Prairie State Select Sires Board. He is a former 4-H leader and stills serves on the Dubuque County 4-H Dairy Committee. It was an honor for Tom to receive the Iowa Holstein Hall of Fame Award in 2017. In his community, he is involved with St. Joseph Parish, Farley. He is the chair of the Cemetery board and a past member of the Parish Council and the Faith Formation board. He will be married to his wife Shirley 40 years in June. They have four sons, Jeremy and wife Kristin and daughters, Mila and Lucy, Matt and wife Kaci and sons, Bodie and Griffin and daughter Lettie, Mark, and Josh and wife Ashley. He enjoys visiting with family and friends who also share an interest in dairy cattle and above all spending time with his family. Tom likes bowling and watching/attending Iowa and ISU football and basketball games.
Larry and his late Father, Maurice formed a partnership in 1980 milking Registered Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns. He has been a member of the National Holstein Association for 48 years. Larry officially retired from milking last fall but still has some young stock. His last Holstein classification on July 1, 2020 resulted in 4 EX, 18 VG and 8 GP with a BAA of 108.5. Several cows have been successful in the show ring at local, district and national levels. His highest classified Holstein, Lands-Brook Allen Dora EX-95-3E, was 1st Aged Cow and Champion Bred and Owned at the Midwest Fall National Show. One of his greatest accomplishments would have to be breeding and developing, LandsBrook Christina EXP-ET EX-96-4E. Christina was named Grand Champion at the World Dairy Expo in 2013, 4X Reserve Grand at Expo and 6X All-American. Lands-Brook animals of both breeds have been consigned to local, state and national sales. Larry has successfully held numerous positions of leadership within county, district and state dairy associations. One of his greatest accomplishments was chairing the 2014 National Holstein Association’s Annual Convention. This involved planning meetings five years in advance, working with the City of Dubuque and the National Holstein Association Office in Vermont. The Dubuque Chamber of Commerce said that it was quite possibly the largest convention of this length to ever have been held in the city at that time. Larry has served the Iowa Holstein Association in almost every capacity including President, Vice-President, Board Member, Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Herald and Breed Improvement and Junior Advisory Committees, Ad Hoc Committees. He has been a National Convention delegate for several years and chaired the 2001 National Convention Souvenir Program Committee. He continues to hold leadership positions on the District and County Holstein Boards. He is very involved in his church, Marion Lutheran Church, and sings in his church choir, Clayton County Dairy Promotion in which he is a charter member, county DHI and has coached the Clayton County 4-H Dairy Judging teams. Larry also enjoys singing in the Luren Choir in Decorah. Larry was a recipient of the 2020 Ralph Keeling Award, the 2016 Distinguished Service Award, the 2006 Hall of Fame Award and the 1981 Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award. Many people enjoy Larry’s company as he has a wealth of Holstein cattle information, local history and dairy trivia. He livens up any conservation or road trip with his knowledge. He is a friend to everyone and seems to know people wherever he goes.

Iowa Holstein Association Awards Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award Dan & Lynn Bolin, Clarksville
Dan Bolin has always loved registered cattle. His parents, Dave and Pam Bolin, often joke that they have a mixed (herd) marriage. Dave milked a Guernsey herd, Pam brought Holsteins to their herd, and they couldn’t resist a handful of Jersey’s during a memorable farm sale. No matter the breed, from a young age Dan was enthralled with cattle genetics. He couldn’t wait to get the next Redbook. During a memorable family vacation they visited Tim Abbott in Vermont. In those days Redbooks were only mailed out and Dan knew there would be a book waiting when they returned home. Much to his delight Tim had received a fax of the Top 100 list and gave Dan the list early! Dan poured over those numbers and bulls making notes and lists on the next long stretch of road. When it was time for a pit stop the doors of their station wagon flew open and out and away flew Dan’s precious papers. Seeing Niagara Falls that trip was memorable but the disappointment of losing the new proofs has been talked about ever since. In high school, Dan participated and did well in Dairy Quiz Bowl nationally, helping to re-energize the program in Iowa. In college he also participated in Dairy Judging. In 2006, he earned his Dairy Science Degree from Iowa State University. Lynn’s story is quite the opposite, growing up in the suburbs of Minneapolis, far from the farm. She met Dan while studying at Iowa State University and her mom knew she was in love when she came home and said “I think I could be a dairy farmer”. Dan and Lynn were married in 2006 and before returning to the farm in 2011 lived overseas for a couple years. When they returned to the farm after a family health scare, the barn was full of Guernsey, Jersey, and Holstein cows. In 2015 Dan and Lynn built a new freestall barn with robotic milking just over the creek from Dan’s 130 year old family farm near Clarksville, Iowa and branded it New Day Dairy. Five years later the barn is full of almost exclusively Registered Holsteins - the Guernsey & Jersey’s not quite able to intermingle in the new barn. Today the herd of 120 cows averages 83 pounds with Rita the Robot milking an average of 2.6x/day with 4.25%F and 3.22%P. Although Dan has purchased quality Registered Holstein heifers and cows from others, Dan is most proud of the homegrown breeding he has done creating great healthy productive dairy cows. Today Dan breeds for health and wellness, calving ease, high components, and robot characteristics. Dan is quick to use the best polled and sometimes red and white bulls (especially for the kids - Amara, 10, Vance,

As for Lynn she’s learned to tell a great cow from a very poor one but that’s her registered cow knowledge limit. She most enjoys telling visitors who come to #sleepwiththecows at the GuestBarn on their farm that every Holstein has a unique pattern (and personality). Visitors also enjoy the cows variety of “hair-styles” which are often removed at fairs when they might otherwise encounter cows. Brylie Volker is the daughter of Bill and Shellie Volker of Sumner. While in high school, she participated in golf, basketball and show choir, was a member of the Student Senate and was on the honor roll for all four years. Brylie was very active in FFA serving as Vice President and Treasurer of her chapter and helped coordinate chapter events such as petting zoos, field trips, teaching Waterloo 3rd graders about various farm animals and planned Meals for the Heartland. While in 4-H, she was President and Vice President of her club and participated in dairy judging and quiz bowl contests at the county and state levels. She was very active in the Iowa Holstein Association serving as Vice President, Treasurer, Reporter and Digital Historian. She was a member of the 2018 National Dairy Bowl Champion Team and has represented Iowa in several other contests at the National Convention through the years. Brylie also served as the 2018 Fayette County Dairy Princess and as the 2017 Iowa Brown Swiss Princess. Brylie has exhibited Brown Swiss and Holsteins at the county, district, state and national levels. She currently is a sophomore at Iowa State University majoring in Agricultural Business. However, next fall she plans to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa to pursue a finance major and accounting major. Minnesota and South Dakota Herds Make High-Ranking BAA% Lists Earlier this year, Holstein Association USA released the lists of the top Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) herds for 2020 classifications. A number of herds from Minnesota and South Dakota ranked in the list of Overall Top 200 BAA Herds for 2020. The top herd from Region Six was Raylore Farm of Hutchinson. Luke and Loren Olson recorded a BAA of 111.9 with 50 cows. Several herds from Minnesota and South Dakota made the top 200 list and respective lists for herd size. Minnesota Holstein Association would like to congratulate all of these herds for this achievement. Minnesota State Holstein Show Red & White Show Judge: Stephanie Aves
Stephanie Aves owns and operates, ST-YLE Holsteins, with her parents where they milk 50 head of Holsteins, Red and Whites, Jerseys, and Milking Shorthorn. ST-YLE has been the home to 30 All-American and Junior All-American nominations in Reds and Whites. The highlight for Stephanie was owning the 2008 Supreme Champion World dairy expo junior show, Scenic-Edge Joyful-Red. Joyful went on to b the foundation to the ST-YLE herd. Stephanie is currently employed by Waikato Milking Systems where she is the Midwest Regional Sales Manager.
Junior Show Judge: Josh Fairbanks
Josh Fairbanks and his wife, Samantha, own and operate Fairholm in Anamosa, Iowa. Their cattle are housed at Josh’s uncle, Doug Fairbanks, farm, where they milk 370 head of all breeds. Josh works full time on the farm. With Samantha, he owns about 20 head of Holsteins, Jerseys, Milking Shorthorns, and a Brown Swiss. They also house a handful of show heifers for others. They enjoy showing competitively at local, state, and national shows and are proud to have exhibited All-Americans in three breeds in the last few years. The Fairbanks’ breeding program focuses mainly on developing and marketing deep pedigreed cattle, with a goal of showing and selling cattle and embryos world wide.

Tom Foss, along with his wife, Julie, and daughters, Abby and Allison, reside in Cambridge, Minnesota. Tom works for ABS Global as a sales representative and sire evaluator. In 2005, Tom and his partners purchased their first Brown Swiss cow to develop Pit-Crew Genetics. They have bred and developed 27 excellent cows and enrolled seven bulls into AI. Pit-Crew Genetics has also received 40 All-American nominations. Tom’s judging history includes judging many state and national shows including serving as the associate judge for the Brown Swiss show at the 2015 World Dairy Expo. Additionally, he has judged State Fairs all over the upper Midwest.

Must be signed and accompany a WI Dairy Showcase Entry Form I agree I am personally responsible for the care, welfare, and condition of my animals during the period of the Show. I acknowledge that I am responsible for my own actions and failures to act and for the actions and failure to act of all of my employees and anyone else who assists me with the fitting, care, and show preparation of my animals. I acknowledge that the Wisconsin Holstein Association is not responsible in any way for my livestock or the actions of myself and anyone associated with my show string while participating in any WHA sponsored show. Exhibitors are encouraged to carry insurance coverage for animals, staff, and personal liability and are responsible for any damages to person or property while on show grounds. I promise that I will abide by the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase Show Ring Rules and the Show Ring Policy and Enforcement Procedures for dairy cattle, and any other show rules and regulations. I will also ensure that all of my employees, agents, contractors and others who assist me with the fitting, care, and show preparation of the animals comply with the same requirements. I understand that a failure to adhere to such requirements could result in disciplinary measures including possible suspension or ban of me, my employees and helpers, the animal(s), the owner and/or the exhibitor of the animal(s) from the Show and future Shows and the public reporting of disciplinary action, including to any association registering purebred livestock. The purpose of this organization is to encourage youth to promote the Registered Holstein industry. The Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association is open to membership for those persons under the age of 21 as of January 1st of the membership year. To be eligible for membership, all applicants must sign this agreement and agree to abide by the rules hereinafter set forth. Failure to honor any of these rules may subject the junior member to immediate revocation of membership status, including the opportunity of participation in WI Holstein Association sanctioned activities and events. For those members that turn 21 during their last year of junior membership, they may continue to receive junior recognition at Wisconsin Holstein Association shows through the duration of the WI Championship Show if their 21st birthday occurs before said show. The following rules shall apply to all junior members: 1. Use or possession of any alcoholic beverage, whether or not in connection with an Association event, is strictly prohibited for anyone under the age of 21. Controlled substances are strictly prohibited by anyone. 2. No member shall engage in any behavior prohibited by state statute, local ordinance or Board Policy (which shall include, but is not limited to vandalism, theft, truancy, assault, threats to personal safety or property and flagrant misconduct). 3. Members, at all times, shall demonstrate good citizenship and recognize the value of setting and adhering to the highest standards of conduct and performance. 4. At all Association sponsored functions, activities and trips, the rules of conduct specified by adult chaperones and advisors shall be at all times observed by members. 5. All members shall recognize the right of the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Junior Activities Committee, the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Holstein Association and its staff, adult advisors and chaperones to have the authority to enforce the rules as established and authorized herein. Members and/or their parents/guardian shall accept any financial responsibility for the enforcement of the provisions herein. 6. For the purposes of the observance of the rules of membership herein, there is 40 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2021
established a Board which shall consist of the WHA Staff, WHA Board of Directors and the WHA Junior Activities Committee. The purpose of this Board shall be to oversee the fair application of the rules of membership and afford the right of due process. A member of this Board must be contacted while the violation is occurring. If they cannot be reached, concrete proof must be provided against the accused. Pictures help but are not concrete proof of violation. If applicable, the accuser must be willing to provide information in support of a claim that a member has violated this policy. Due process shall be afforded by: Explaining the evidence against the member, giving the member an opportunity to explain his/her version of the facts, thereafter, it is a matter of discretion by the Board whether to have the accuser/observer summoned and whether to permit cross examination of said individuals. The following procedure is in place if it is determined that a member has violated the alcohol and controlled substance policy: 1. 1st warning, written and verbal, with privileges taken away. The severity of the privileges revoked will be decided by the Board mentioned above. 2. 2nd offense will be looked at by the WHA Board with membership revocation. Ken Gasper named Pioneer Award Recipient LANSING, Mich. – The CentralStar Cooperative board of directors recently selected Ken Gasper of Belding, Michigan as the 2020 Pioneer Award recipient. Established in 1977, the Pioneer Award recognizes individuals who through selfless and dedicated service and leadership have provided the cooperative and its members greater prosperity.
“Ken was a visionary leader for our cooperative,” said Paul Trierweiler, CentralStar board president. “His ability to encourage the board to think outside-the-box allowed the cooperative to expand service offerings to provide useful tools to producers which ultimately helped improve farm profitability.” A member of the CentralStar board of directors from 1983 – 2013, Gasper was president from 1993 – 2004. In addition, he served on numerous CentralStar committees; as well as the AntelBio board of directors; and represented the cooperative on the Select Sires board of directors for 23 years.
As board president, Gasper led the organization through many changes including transitioning to a stock-based cooperative. At the same time the cooperative grew beyond being singularly focused on genetics and reproduction, with the addition of Dairy Herd Information (DHI) services; dairy records analysis and consulting, diagnostic testing through the creation of AntelBio, and herd management products. As a result of these improvements the cooperative’s sales revenues grew by more than $10 million in a shrinking customer base.

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING January 15, 2021 · Gridley, IL The Executive Committee of the Illinois Holstein Association met January 15, 2021 at Carol Jones’ house in Gridley. The meeting of the Illinois Holstein Board of Directors which historically took place in conjunction with the January Committee Meetings and the meeting held at the State Convention were both cancelled due to state guidelines on gathering size and COVID-19. Steve Irwin, Ed Smith, Kevin Wendling, Dale Drendel, Jerry Smith and John Erbsen were present along with Treasurer Carol Jones, Secretary Sarah Lenkaitis and Editor Stephanie Hammerly. President Steve Irwin called the meeting to order at 11:10am. Secretary Sarah Lenkaitis distributed copies of the minutes from the June Executive Committee meeting. It was moved by Dale Drendel to approve the minutes, seconded by Jerry Smith and the motion carried. Carol Jones presented the Treasurer’s Report. Carol also reviewed the annual insurance audit and provided an investment performance review. Ed Smith moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report, Kevin Wendling seconded, and the motion carried. Stephanie Hammerly gave the Editor’s report. For 2021, she will work with Sarah Lenkaitis to distribute a monthly e-newsletter to communicate the latest news and events. The first one, for January, was sent out last week. Throughout the year, Stephanie will also be sharing a profile on board members on the Illinois Holstein Facebook page. As mentioned in the publications committee report, there will be four issues of the Illinois Holstein Herald in 2021, with one being a Midwest Holsteins issue. The Spring issue of the Illinois Holstein Herald will be mailed the first week of March. The Illinois Holstein of the Year nominations are due January 20. For the Holstein USA report, Dale gave a brief recap on 2020. While registrations, transfers and classification are slightly down, the number of herds and cows processing records with ATA is up. Holstein USA continues programs including Holstein America (episodes shown on RFD-TV and posted on YouTube), enters the third year of their research program (this year will focus on genomic numbers for feed digestibility) and continues to offer bulls via Holstein Marketplace Sires. Holstein USA recently hired a new classifer – Erin Leach. The Show Committee recently approved the Spring and early Summer national shows. While there are no changes to the show ring policy, Dale reminded the board the July 15 transfer deadline for national shows. Plans continue to move forward for the 2021 National Holstein Convention in Pennsylvania. Currently, it includes holding an in-person delegate session and elections. OLD BUSINESS There was no old business. NEW BUSINESS The Executive Committee discussed alternate times to hold the Annual Meeting since the State Convention was cancelled. Jerry Smith made a motion to postpone the Annual Meeting to a future date when members can be present – potentially State Show. Ed Smith seconded, and the motion passed. The Executive Committee also discussed elections. Ed Smith moved to extend the term of all officers, executive committee members and directors for one year due to COVID-19. Jerry Smith seconded, and the motion passed. COMMITTEE REPORTS In place of the January Committee Meetings, cancelled due to COVID-19, committee chairs were asked to submit their report and budget to the Executive Committee for review. Membership Committee Report provided by Herb Schmiedeskamp Membership rates will remain the same for 2021. Membership renewal forms were sent to all 2020 members and in mailboxes the end of December. A blank membership form is also posted on the website. An email reminder will be sent out March 1 to remind unpaid members of the April 1 deadline. Depending on the response, a second reminder mailing may be sent. Budget: $22,000. Jerry Smith moved to accept the Membership Committee Report. Dale Drendel seconded, and the motion passed. PDCA Committee Report provided by Gene McCoy - The 2021 PDCA Calf Sale is to be held at the Livingston County Ag Fair Grounds in Pontiac, Illinois on April 10, 2021 with time to be determined. Cowbuyer will be present. Consignment information is due February 1 (except spring Page 8
calves due March 15). Darren Ropp along with Gary Janssen, Bob Miller, Lucas Clanton and others will be selecting at least 35 Holstein calves. Consignors are encouraged to have animals clipped. The committee is asking the association for the value of a half-page ad placed in the Illinois Holstein Herald. Budget: $0 (requesting in-kind half-page ad). Ed Smith moved to accept the PDCA Committee Report. John Erbsen seconded, and the motion passed. State Show Committee Report provided by Amy Raber - The committee is looking for a new show location as the McLean County Fairgrounds will not extend a contract to us for 2021. Alternate locations researched include 1) Lincoln: $6,000 with available dates June 28- July 2 or July 6-10 and 2) Springfield – Junior Barn: $7,400 (working on negotiating costs down) with available dates June 28- July 2, July 6-10, or July 1316. The judge needs to be contacted once we have selected a date and location. There are several outstanding 2020 show donations from farms which might necessitate a change in how donations are solicited and collected. However, with all the adjustments made in expenses and the generous donations received, the show made a slight profit. Budget: -$1,000.00 (dependent on show location). The Executive Committee discussed several additional options to research for the show location including Pontiac (Livingston County), Morris (Grundy County) or New Berlin (Sagamon County). Ideally, the show date will be July 5-9, 2021. Kevin Wendling moved to approve the State Show Committee Report with the show location and date to be selected by March 1. Dale Drendel seconded, and the motion passed. Futurity Committee Report provided by Darcy Steffes - Tentatively, the 2021 Illinois Holstein Futurity will be held in conjunction with State Show – date and location TBD. The second payment for 2021 entries and nominations for the 2022 entries is open until January 31. Once these are collected, an Excel sheet will be emailed out. Darcy Steffes has expressed to Steve Irwin that she is interested in transitioning the futurity to someone else. Budget: $0 (no association funds). Jerry Smith approved the Futurity Committee Report. Kevin Wendling seconded, and the motion passed. Dutchess/Little Miss Committee Report provided by Lori Lyons Tentatively, the 2021 Dutchess and Little Miss Contest will take place in conjunction with State Show – date and location TBD. While there are no updates to be made to the rules, it is suggested the full rules and suggested activity attendance are printed when soliciting contestants. As a reminder, the list of required and suggested activities has been 1) Required Activities: Illinois Championship Junior and Open Shows, Illinois State Fair Junior and Open Holstein Shows, Spring Thing and must complete articles for the Dutchess Domain in the Illinois Holstein Herald and 2) Suggested Activities: IL State Sale, PDCA Calf Sale and Senior Convention. With public and private schools and colleges having started (or with new student week) during the State Fair, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get (and keep) participants when this is being a mandatory attendance activity. The Executive Committee has allowed an excused absence for this event expecting sufficient time is given to find a substitute. Budget: $2,000 less $500 sponsor = -$1,500. Dale Drendel made a motion to approve the Dutchess/Little Miss Committee Report. John Erbsen seconded, and the motion passed. State Sales provided by Brian Olbrich - Due to COVID-19 restrictions the state sale committee was unable to meet. When restrictions are lifted, the committee will meet in-person and address the possibility to hold a sale and present a proposal to the Board of Directors. Budget: $0. Dale Drendel made a motion to approve the State Sale Report. Kevin Wendling seconded, and the motion passed. Public Relations provided by Aaron Heinzmann and Stephanie Hammerly - In 2020, there were three Holstein Herald newsletters and one Holstein Herald/Midwest Holsteins magazine. The committee recommended keeping this format for 2021 with the option of participating in the Fall based upon advertising commitments, shows and sales. A monthly e-newsletter was recommended for to keep members visiting the website for up-to-date information. Budget: -$5,000. The Executive Committee discussed the costs of the Illinois Holstein Herald and participation in Midwest Holsteins issues. John Erbsen moved to approve the Public Relations Report with an amendment of the budget to -$7,500 per the financial history provided by Treasurer, Carol Jones. Youth provided by Amy Raber - Spring Thing will be held March 5-6 at the Water Tower Place in Gridley. The event will abide by COVID-19 safety guidelines. There will be no evening activity. In addition, all families will need to book their own hotel rooms to keep people separated as much as possible. The event cost is TBD. The 2021 State Show date and location are TBD. The judge will be contacted once finalized. As of now, there are no planned fundraisers. This year we have two YDJM applicants. Their applications are being reviewed to help them with corrections for the national level. Budget: -$3,000 – Funds requested would be used for travel to National Convention in Pennsylvania, if held. There would be approximately 20 youth participating along with coaches and two junior advisors. Jerry Smith moved to accept the Youth Committee Report with an amendment of the budget to -$1,500 and noted the board would reevaluate when more detail on National Holstein Convention cost and any fundraisers would be available. The Executive Committee also agreed Junior Breeder, Senior Breeder and Service Awards (usually awarded at the State Convention) will be postponed until 2022. Ed Smith made a motion for District Shows to not be required for members to show at 2021 Illinois Championship Show. Jerry Smith seconded, and the motion carried. Sarah Lenkaitis will contact chairs for each district show regarding if they need a show box. His youth dairy judging and dairy quiz bowl programs have been highly successful, and Fischer has judged several state youth dairy cattle shows, including the National FFA Dairy Judging Contest. He currently serves as a moderator for the National Holstein Dairy Bowl contests and as a member of the National 4-H Dairy Judging Management Committee.
Dave Fischer was raised on a Holstein dairy farm in Southern Illinois and was active in the 4-H dairy project and Junior Holstein club. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal/Dairy Science at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Master of Science in Environmental Sciences with an emphasis on livestock waste management from Southern Illi-

Fischer spent 40 years in his career as a County Agricultural Advisor and State-wide Dairy Educator with University of Illinois Extension. He retired in 2010 and continued as Illinois 4-H Dairy Program Coordinator/ Coach until 2020. Fischer has been recognized statewide and nationally for his involvement and commitment to dairy youth programing.

Holstein Association USA Board Holds Fall Meeting The Holstein Association USA, Inc. (HAUSA) board of directors met in Hartford, Connecticut for the fall meeting November 18-19. President Corey Geiger led the proceedings. The board approved the 2021 Managementby-Objective Business Plan and associated budget, as presented by management. As a show of respect and support to its members, the Holstein Association USA implemented a program in the spring to give 10 free registrations to members simply by filling out a form and having it sent to the office postmarked by May 31, 2020. The hope for the program was to take a little burden off of members during these trying times. The free Holstein Association registration program was well received, as 1,034 members took advantage of it, and those participating had a combined savings of $85,000! Additionally, the Holstein COMPLETE® program, which offers dairy farmers the best value for their money by incorporating registration, mating information, classification, pedigrees, genetic reports, and production records into one convenient package, continues to be popular. Members save an average of 25%, by participating in this program. OTHER BUSINESS The board approved moving forward with a three-year genetics research project which was submitted by Dr. Chad Dechow from The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Dechow’s research, titled “Genomic evaluation of diet digestibility,” focuses on the genetic variation of digestive efficiency within Holsteins. Funding for the research, over the threeyear period, will be withdrawn from the reserve fund. As approved by the Holstein Association USA Board in 2014, a portion of reserve fund money can be allocated for breed improvement and research. Current research projects include a threeyear project started in 2019 focused on breeding Holstein cows for heat tolerance using the slick hair gene and a two-year project started in 2020 focused on the identification of genetic and physiological aspects of double ovulation and twinning in lactating Holstein cows. Principal investigators for these projects are Dr. Anna Denicol from the University of California-Davis and Dr. JP Martins from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively. Page 10
Recommendations from the Show Committee which the board approved include: • 2021 National Spring Shows in Ohio, New York, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Utah, giving them leeway to change locations as needed; • A tentative list of 2021 National Shows from summer through fall as planned in Ohio, Minnesota, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Kentucky; • Adding three individuals to the National Judges List; • Adding five individuals to the Qualified Judges List. Plans are to hold the 2021 Judges Conference with the Northeast Spring National Holstein Show. If the conference cannot go on as planned at that time due to COVID-19, the Association will waive the fiveyear requirement for participants to attend a Judges Conference in order to be eligible for the 2022 judges list. Be sure to check our website for updates at www.holsteinusa.com. Each year since 2009, the board allows the release, for reuse by others, of a prefix after 20 years of non-use. This policy makes it easier for new members to acquire prefixes for their herds. At the meeting, the board approved the release of 1,188 prefixes, with revocation to be effective as of December 31, 2020. The list of prefixes to be released has been posted on the Holstein Association’s website to give notice to membership. If someone wants to permanently retire his or her prefix prior to the release date, they may contact Customer Service at 800.952.5200 and request to do so for a $100 fee.
Holstein Judges Conference Update for 2021 Due to current health concerns, Holstein Association USA will not hold a Judges Conference in 2021. We will waive the five-year requirement to attend a judges conference for the 2022 judges list. The 2022 Holstein Association USA Judges Conference will be held in conjunction with the Northeast Spring National Holstein Show, New York. Date TBD.
