ILLINOIS STATE HOLSTEIN PICNIC September 17, 2017 ¡ Winslow, IL ¡ Hosted by Wildvale Holsteins The 2017 State Holstein Picnic was hosted by Wildvale Holsteins in Winslow, Illinois. It was a beautiful day filled with sunshine and a great time to visit with other Illinois Holstein breeders from across the state! Holstein Association USA President Boyd Schaufelberger shared updates from the National Association and Illinois Holstein Association President Jason Oertel shared updates from the State Association. Special thank you to the Wild family for hosting us this year!

A 5th generation farm nestled in northwest Illinois, Wildvale Holsteins is operated by Kris and Theresa Wild. Their farm was first homesteaded in 1846 and the first registered Holstein arrived in the 1940s. Today, their herd has grown to over 100 milk cows. Kris Wild shares Wildvale’s breeding philosophy:
“Every cow and heifer is aAa mated. We use this mating system because we feel it gives us a more balanced dairy cow that can handle calving at a young age. These young cows seem to mature into a wider and stronger, more problem free cow that lasts for many lactations. Our service sires are mostly proven bulls, we also use AI young sires along with some of our own bulls that we raise. Wildvale Holsteins has sold registered Holstein bulls, cows and heifers to other dairymen for over 70 years. Through the years, we try to select bulls that are plus on percent butterfat. Because of this, we have had cows finish with tremendous fat records. As of September 2017, we have 21 cows with records at Wildvale with over 1,500 lbs. of butterfat; three of these are over 2,000 lbs. of butterfat and one is over 3,000 lbs. of butterfat.�

comfort and ease of feeding and handling of the cows with a tribute to their father, Robert Wild. Wildvale has implemented a conveyor system to feed TMR that runs the entire length of the
barn. Feed is mixed in a stationary TMR mixer and is dropped between each pair of cows. Thank you to the Wild family for hosting the 2017 Illinois State Holstein Picnic!

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, • Attending all Executive Board and Board of Directors meetings, recording minutes of such meetings and distributing copies of minutes to the proper parties. • Keeping a record of membership and membership fees. • Serving as a “clearing house” for correspondence, bills and day-to-day activities for IHA. • Performing duties required for the committees of IHA such as mailings and other such duties as dictated by IHA. • Be responsible for the care and safekeeping of the IHA equipment. • Handling all tasks required within the minutes of the meetings and other such duties as dictated by IHA. • Report any committee not performing the duties of that committee. • Assist the Treasurer with clerking the Illini Golden Opportunity Sale, Illini Futures Sale and, if requested, the PDCA Calf Sale. Ensure all registration transfers from those sales are sent to Holstein USA. • Attend the following functions: January – Committee & Board Meetings (2 days) February – Illini Futures Sale & Annual Meeting (2 days) April or October – Board Meeting & Illini Golden Opportunity Sale (2 days) June – Board Meeting (1 day) July – Illinois State Show (2 days)

Ronald “Ron” Debatin, 73, of Pocahontas, Ill., born May 11, 1944 in Highland Ill., passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 at Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, Mo. Ron was a graduate of the University of Illinois with a Master’s degree in Animal Nutrition. He was a past president of the Illinois Holstein Association. He was a past board member of Select Sires and Bond Madison Water Company. After 27 years of dairy farming in Greenville and Alhambra, Ron and his wife Becky, retired. Ron pursued a 2nd career as a “rough specialist” and “part-time arborist” for 23 years at The Woodlands Golf course in Alton. Besides his parents, Nelson and Hulda, nee Wegmann, Debatin, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Debatin. Ron is survived by his wife Rebecca “Becky” Paternoster; three children, Julie (Chris) LaFrance of Highland, Jackie Debatin of New York, N.Y. and Brian (Cathy Kronk) of Edwardsville; two grandchildren, Phillip LaFrance and Mallory LaFrance, both of Highland; one brother, William “Bill” (Marilyn Debatin) of Greenville; and one sister-in-law, Judy Debatin of Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the scholarship fund for students enrolled in the dairy program at the University of Illinois. Earl M. Moeller, 95, of Effingham, Illinois passed away at 6:08 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham. Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Food Pantry, St. Paul’s Cemetery Fund (Blue Point) or to the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left by clicking here. at www.bauerfh.com. Earl was born January 11, 1922 in Jasper County, the son of Martin P. and Augusta C. (Blievernicht) Moeller. He married Marilyn Hammer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Altamont May 30, 1948. Earl served with the United States Army during WWII and was a member of the Effingham V.F.W. Moeller was a member of the Central Illinois Garden Tractor Pulling Association, the National & State Holstein Association, as well as the Lutheran Layman’s League. Earl loved to carve and draw; even having his sculptures displayed in downtown Effingham three different years. Earl is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Effingham; seven children, Nancy (husband Randy) Ashcraft of Pana, Stanley (wife Marlene) Moeller of Effingham, Steve (wife Nancy) Moeller of Effingham, Mark (wife Nancy) Moeller of Pana, Lisa (husband Bill) Brackney of Effingham, David (wife Angie) Moeller of Effingham and Stacia Rose of Altamont; 24 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Dennis; brothers, Fred, Ernest, Edward, Oscar, Rolan, Daniel and Arnold Moeller; sisters, Alma Moeller, Marie Moeller, Irene Schuette and Beulah Ruppert.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello again everyone, I would imagine that by the time this message finds all of you, busy will be an understatement. No doubt that fall is the busiest time of the year. For me, it’s also the most beautiful and rewarding time of the year, so enjoy the fall and please be careful. Looking back on the happenings since I last wrote, we’ve been through sales, shows and a picnic. Nice work by all of those involved with the various sales around the state this spring. In lieu of a State Sale this fall, we have one scheduled for April 21, 2018. Nate Janssen and Brian Wesemann are the chairmen and they will be working hard to have a successful sale. We will also be having another Futures Sale in conjunction with State Convention and Herb Schmiedeskamp and Ed Smith are chairing again. Please strongly consider consigning to these sales, they are great marketing opportunities for you. Since we are on the subject of State Convention, this year it will be hosted by the Northwest Holstein Club the first weekend of February. I want to thank Paula Bovre and Joe Engel for their hard work this summer chairing the State Show. I would also like to thank the
numerous volunteers that helped make both the Junior and Open Shows a success. Good luck to those of you exhibiting at the fall shows, I know that you will represent Illinois well. A thank you also goes out to Kris and Theresa Wild for hosting this year’s picnic. We had beautiful weather and the facilities and cows looked great. A nice crowd was in attendance and we really appreciate the hospitality put forth by the entire crew at Wildvale. I should also mention that we are planning our winter committee meetings and board meeting for the first week or two in January. More details will be coming later, but keep this in mind as your clubs have any fall meetings. Your participation is crucial to the success of our Association. The last thing that I want to mention is that after six years of service, our State Secretary Tina Yagow, will be leaving us at the end of the year. Tina has done a terrific job serving our association and she will be greatly missed. We wish her good luck in her future endeavors. We have begun our search for a new secretary. There is information on page 5 of this issue regarding the opening and if you or someone you know might be interested in the position, please direct them to us. Our hope is to have the position filled by December 1st so that Tina can help train her replacement. Good luck and stay safe this fall. Sincerely,

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois! I am honored to be your 2017-2018 Illinois Holstein Dutchess and represent the Holstein breed state wide. I am the daughter of Brian and Mary Olbrich of Harvard located in McHenry County. As the Illinois Holstein Dutchess, my first duty was to hand out awards at the Illinois Championship show for both the Junior and Open shows alongside the 2017 Little Miss Holstein Rachel Busker. Congratulations to all of the participants in both shows and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your experience! Since then, I have been preparing my cattle for our county fair and state fair, handing out more ribbons and awards, showing, moving away from home for college and getting ready to compete in the dairy judging contests with my teammates at the fall shows representing Kaskaskia College. This year, the Illinois Holstein Championship Show is dedicated to Ron & Becky Debatin in honor of their years of service and dedication to the Holstein industry and the Illinois Holstein Association. For those who have not heard, Ron passed away this summer. Prior to this year, we don’t believe that Ron had ever missed a State Show. Ron was called the “Founding Father of the Illinois Holstein Futurity.” Ron and Becky were the Futurity Chairs from 1967 to 1986. They have also had several State Show champions and winners including the 1969 2-Year-Old Futurity Winner, Jonestar Vue-Claire Triumph Be VG-86 and the Champion Cow & Bull in 1979. The Illinois Holstein Association membership and in particular, the Championship Show exhibitors owe a huge debt of gratitude to Ron and Becky for their tremendous efforts! Congratulations Ron and Becky and thank you for all that you have done for the Illinois Holstein Association!

DISTRICT NEWS MISSISSIPPI VALLEY Where did the summer of 2017 go? Our Summer 2017 Meeting was hosted by Udder Hill Dairy at the Basco Community Center on June 24th as a potluck. Again, we don’t go hungry with this group as there was a lot of good food. Many members participated in various fairs throughout this short summer. Just to name a few: Lewiston, MO, Adams County Fair, Quincy, IL, Illinois State Fair and many others. The District Show was held on July 27th during the Adams County Fair. It was a successful and fun day had by all. Even our youngsters were happy. A meal was prepared and serviced to all the club members. Big thanks to Kathy Neisen for preparing the menu. This event is also a busy week for the club members as we serve milkshakes at the stand. Always great to see and catch up with fellow club members during the off season. Good luck and safe travels to Beth Cash as she referees volleyball games (LOL she made me promise no pictures). Also good luck to those who have started back to school or who are participating in school sporting events. Continue to learn team work because as we all know, it takes a team to make showing a family affair for all to enjoy. Also a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary to any member over the next several months. Last, let us keep those in areas where the hurricanes have hit in our thoughts and prayers. BOARD MEETING MINUTES June 6, 2017 - Gridley, IL
The Illinois Holstein Board of Directors met June 6, 2017 at the Flanagan State Bank, Gridley, Illinois. The meeting was called to order at 12:50 p.m. by President Jason Oertel with 14 board members, 3 staff and two guests present. State Secretary Tina Yagow called the roll of board members and those present were asked to read the minutes of the last meeting as printed in the Herald. Jerry Smith moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting, Aaron Heinzmann seconded, and the motion carried. Tina asked Directors to take their club show box of ribbons home with them and also handed out spreadsheets of non-renewed members for Directors to try to get them to pay their dues again this year. Treasurer Carol Jones presented all budgets from each enterprise along with the Enhancement Fund and National Convention funds. Membership income is down right now so she encouraged Directors to follow-up with people on the non-renewed list. State Show sponsorships are coming in already. The Treasurer’s Report was approved with a motion from Norbert Hasheider, seconded by Herb Schmiedeskamp which carried. Editor Stephanie Hammerly told the Board the Summer Herald should be arriving any day if it hasn’t yet. The Winter Herald will have the cover photo contest on Facebook. Boyd Schaufelberger addressed the Board on behalf of Holstein USA and reminded everyone about National Convention in Washington State at the end of June. Jerry Smith will be running for Director of Region 3 and Dale Drendel will be running for another term as at-large director. Boyd humbly admitted he will be running for President. Registrations are up this year and Basic ID animals are only down 1%. Transfers are a little ahead of last year. To save a $5 phone transfer fee, it is recommended breeders do transfers online. A new national show policy will eliminate Fall Yearling classes at National Fall Shows for next year. President Jason Oertel informed the full Board the Executive Committee will investigate the cost of ultrasound at State Show for future years. The Executive Committee will create an Ethics Committee to enforce printed show rules and also enforce the 1 ½” hair length rule for this year’s State Show, providing hair length rulers for each show string and monitoring as cattle are coming into the show ring. Aaron Mitchell moved to approve the Executive Committee Report which was seconded by Jerry Smith and the motion carried. OLD BUSINESS A little discussion/progress has taken place with the By-law Review Committee but there is nothing to report at this time. The average Holstein sale price at the PDCA Calf sale in April was $2,254. State Association expenses for the 2017 State Convention ended up being just over $600 without seeking as many sponsorships as local clubs usually do when they host. 24 of the 50 past dutchesses were present and it was a nice event. The profit of the 2017 Futures Sale was about $1,500. NEW BUSINESS Membership numbers are at 170 Junior members and 375 Senior members paid for the year so far which is down from previous years so Board members are asked to contact the people who have not renewed from last year and hopefully many non-paid members will pay during show season. 2017 National Convention in Washington State – 3 Illinois members are running for National Offices. Our delegates will be John Mitchell, Bob Miller, Gary Janssen, Jason Oertel and Brian Olbrich. We have one DJM Illinois Holstein Herald
finalist, Emily Irwin, and also one YDJM finalist, Payton Erbsen. Aaron Mitchell is the new Area 3 JAC representative and Riley Zettle is running for JAC as well. As always, Junior teams will be competing in Dairy Bowl and all other events. 2017 State Show will be July 20 and 21 in Bloomington. This will be the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the IL Holstein Futurity, therefore special events are planned. Pro-Fit Show Supply will be there selling supplies for the first time. Show chairmen are currently looking for award/class sponsors. Steve Schwoerer will supply straw for sale. Open Show Exhibitors should be reminded they are required to show as many head at their district show as they plan to show at the State Championship Show. A new Overall Production Winner will be announced so exhibitors are reminded to bring production records to be eligible. 2017 State Picnic site and date are yet to be determined. 2018 State Sale – Chairmen Nate Janssen and Brian Wesemann plan the next State Sale in Spring 2018 in Northern Illinois. 2018 State Convention – Northwest IL Holstein Club will host in Freeport, February 2 & 3, 2018. The Executive Committee would like to see a Futures Sale held at the 2018 State Convention but would like opinions from the board and need people to volunteer to be in charge. 2017 Fall Board meeting – It was suggested the Board have a November/ December board meeting with Committee meetings or have a fall meeting at the State Picnic. President Jason Oertel will decide based on what items arise this summer. Jerry moved we order 5 copies of the history book for state staff from Connie Gritton, Brian seconded, and the motion carried. Herb Schmiedeskamp moved the meeting be adjourned. Celebrating 50 Years of the Illinois Holstein Futurity
This year marks the 50th time Illinois Holstein will crown a Futurity champion.
Thanks to the forward thinking of Ron Debatin and the financial support of Chambric Farms we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the 2 year old Illinois Holstein Futurity. A group of 7 men gathered on a cold February day in 1967 at the Mooseheart Farm office and began their plan using the Ohio futurity form. 50 years later we lead some of the finest cattle in Illinois into the ring. The futurity was the confirmation of one state show and has always been held in the middle of the state, mostly in Bloomington and Lincoln. The class had been shown in the evening following the junior show, however due to heat, difficulty in bagging cattle some times for 3 shows and hardship on the showmen the futurity was moved to the open show day in 2011 and is the first of the cows show. There have been over 15,000 animal nominated for the two year old futurity in the past 50 years. In 1984 540 yearlings paid their first nomination fee of $2.50. This is strongly supported by the State Sale, Clinton County Classic and the PDCA Calf sale along with the Holstein breeders in Illinois. Over $99,600 has been collected in nomination fees with the top payout being in 2010 with the winner’s check being $508.44. Those that have chaired the futurity are limited to a little more than a handful: Ron Debatin (19 years), Kevin Lyons, Alan and Bev Tucker, Del Klussendorf, Ed Smith (10 years) and Wendy Erbsen (8 years) This was once a position that 10% of the income was given to the secretary but now the chairman donates all of their time. Nominations have gone from a paper form sent through the mail to a nomination that is done in the cloud where everyone with the internet can see who is nominated. Don’t be fooled to think that futurity cows only look good on their walk across the shavings on futurity day. The 50 winners carry some strong statistics behind them. Five of the 2 year old winners have gone on to become Gold Metal Dams and four are Dams of Merit. Last years winner is scored 88 points and will continue to rise with her classification score as did the others. Bluff-Ridge Broker Jay, the only 95 point cow of the group, is closely followed by two cows scored 94 (Luck-E Advent Asia-ET & Zehrview Simba Buela), six scored 93, Twelve at 92 and the average score being 90.64 points. Rolling-Lawns Mitchie (EX 92), the 1976 winner owned by Neal Turley was the first futurity winner that went on to become the 1978 Grand Champion of the Illinois Championship show. It wasn’t until 1990 that this happened again with Erbacres Valiant Colleen (EX 92 DOM). Erbacres Astro Lashley (EX 92 GMD) was the first cow to win both the two year old and the five year old futurity; Erbacres Encore Leigh (EX 93) and Erbacres Jasper Liberty (EX 92) followed the same feat. Herds that have had success in the futurity are a testament of the strong Holstein breeders in Illinois. Rock-I, the first futurity winner, has had four winners early in the classes, their first being Rock-I Alcartra Fancy K Jamie (EX 92 GMD). Rolling Lawns have had five winners, winning half of the first 6 shows. Other farms having success in the futurity ring include Zehrview (3 winners), Holbric (3 winners), B-J Grove (3 winners), Bluff-Ridge (4 winners) and Erbacres (10 winners). So today we celebrate not only 50 years of a show, but the chairman that are behind the scenes and the breeders than have the forethought when looking at their heifer calves, give value to their future and pick out those animals that stand elite in the Holstein industry. The 2017 Superior Young Dairy Producer Award (SYDPA) program was held August 19, at the Illinois State Fair. Twentythree 4-H dairy project members from across Illinois took part in the event. The purpose of the contest is to create an educational activity that promotes youth development, career development, and personal growth through increased knowledge of the dairy industry. This three-phase competition emphasizes the youth’s knowledge of the dairy industry. The “top three” overall participants were awarded with a $1,000 scholarship. The 2017 scholarship recipients, in alpha order, are: Grace Koester, Red Bud, IL (Randolph County) Olivia Telgmann, Strasburg, IL (Shelby County) Evan Young, Streator, IL (LaSalle County) The $3,000 in scholarships was sponsored by the Illinois 4-H Foundation. Individual plaques, sponsored by Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders Association and Illinois State Fair, were awarded to the “top 3” in each phase and the “top 3” overall winners. The first phase was a dairy management test relating to dairy nutrition, health, reproduction, milk marketing, and other dairy related information. Top three contestants for this phase were: Brady Heinzmann, Carlyle, IL Marion County 4-H) Grace Koester, Red Bud, IL (Randolph County) Rachel Scidmore, Chadwick, IL (Carroll County)
The second phase was a three station skill-a-thon on various aspects of the dairy industry. Contestants had to identify dairy feeds, identify, understanding DHI information, and identify dairy equipment. The top three contestants in the skill-a-thon were: Grace Koester, Red Bud, IL (Randolph County) Olivia Telgmann, Strasburg, IL (Shelby County) Evan Young, Streator, IL (LaSalle County) The third phase of the Superior Young Dairy Producer Contest was a judging contest. The judging phase consisted of animal selection by placing four classes of dairy cows and two classes of heifers. The top three contestants for this phase were: Payton Erbsen, Lanark, IL (Carroll County) Taylor Huels, Carlyle, IL (Bond County 4-H) Evan Young, Streator, IL (LaSalle County) This year marked the 22nd consecutive year for the Superior Young Dairy Producer Award Program which has provided $108,000 in college scholarships to Illinois dairy youth since its inception. JUNIOR REPORTER’S MESSAGE
Hello Everyone! There hasn’t been an issue of the Herald since the National Holstein Convention, so I’ll give you an update on that first. Illinois did great! First, the senior dairy bowl team made up of Riley Zettle, Jordon Oellerich, Charlie Elliot, and myself are national champions! We played against Utah, Iowa, and New England to get into the finals. We then defeated California for the national title! Our Junior dairy bowl team competed very well too! In the speech contest, I won 2nd place in the senior division with my speech titled “Overcoming the U.S. Food Fear.” The paper scrapbook placed 1st and the digital scrapbook was 5th. Also at National Convention, Illinois was well represented by Payton Erbsen, who was a national YDJM, and Emily Irwin, who was selected as a National DJM winner! Great job Illinois Juniors! We had a blast touring Seattle, visiting local dairy farms, and whale watching! Keep up the great work as we work towards going to Michigan next summer for the 2018 National Holstein Convention! I’d also like to congratulate all the winners at the Illinois State Holstein Championship Show and the Illinois State Fair! Remember that if you were sold in the worker auction at the State Show to make sure you get in contact with your buyer and do the work so that they’re willing to buy kids in the future! The Superior Young Dairy Producer Contest was held at the State Fair for the 22nd consecutive year, and awarded three $1000 scholarships to the top three overall individuals. The three phases were dairy judging, a skill-a-thon, and a written dairy knowledge exam. Congratulations to Olivia Telgmann, Evan Young, and Grace Koester for winning the three scholarships! Furthermore, I’d like to wish good luck to the state 4-H dairy quiz bowl team traveling to Louisville, and to the state 4-H dairy judging team competing at Madison this fall! Good luck to those competing in the fall shows and keep up the good work juniors!

What a year it has been for Illinois Holsteins...and the year is not over yet! Congratulations to Boyd Schaufelberger on being elected President of Holstein Association USA! We are very proud of you and know that you will continue to represent Illinois well. Congratulations to the Illinois Juniors on all of their successes at the National Holstein Convention! Highlights are included on pages 36 & 37 of the Midwest Holsteins section. The fall show season is upon us and with the beautiful Holsteins that were shown this summer, it will be exciting to watch Illinois Holstein breeders on the colored shavings this fall. Good luck exhibitors! With fall comes cooler temperatures, which also means winter is next and this winter is packed with Illinois Holstein activities! Mark your calendars for the Senior Convention that will be held February 2 & 3 in Freeport and save the dates for the 2018 Spring Thing - February 24 & 25 in Peoria. More details in the next issue.
