BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Steffes Registered Holsteins, Elizabeth Farm Background Steffes Registered Holsteins is a fifth generation family farm, owned and operated by Karen Steffes, Dennis and Jane Steffes, Darcy Steffes and her fiancé Austin Ertmer. In 1990, Dennis and Jane started a partnership with Karen, Dennis’s mom. At that time they milked 110 cows with a rolling herd average of 22,000 pounds of milk. In 1995, they had two bulls selected for AI, one at Select Sires and one at 21st Century Genetics. They also received the Outstanding Young Dairy Farmer Award from AMPI. After graduation from the University of Wisconsin Platteville, Darcy returned to the farm to raise calves, monitor fresh cows and work with the genetics and show cows. Her fiancé Austin takes care of the breeding age and bred heifers, while doing the field work with Dennis. Today they milk 410 cows with a herd average of 24,500 pounds of milk, 950 fat and 760 protein. In the summer of 2014, they were honored to be recognized as the Environmental Farm Family of the Year by the Illinois Milk Producers. Dennis and Jane bred Steffes Ice Avery who held the top production record in Jo Daviess County and the 3rd record in Illinois until 2017. She had a lifetime record of 311,090 lbs of milk in 8 lactations. Recently they have been looking at updating their milking facility, but are still just looking at options to provide more cow comfort for their growing cows. They started using IVF and conventional flushing more frequently to hopefully start to market some of the resulting calves.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

NATIONAL BOARD

Greetings to Illinois Holstein members and guests, Wow! Here it is Sept. 2-one month away from World Dairy Expo. Where has this year gone? Life is like a roll of toilet paper-the closer to the end you get, the faster it goes! Thinking about World Dairy Expo makes me think about my younger years when I was in 4-H and then FFA. I’m sure we all have good and happy thoughts about those years and all the people who have had a positive influence on our young lives. Cal Meyer was the judge at my first 4-H Show. I bet we all remember who the judge was at our first time in the ring! This makes me wonder what kind of an impact or impression I am leaving on young people I come in contact with? The last county fair in Illinois starts this week-The Sandwich Fair-also one of the largest fairs in Illinois. Think of all the experiences and fun we had at different county fairs in our youth! Then came the years in FFA. This, I feel, is where we really learned responsibility and leadership. I will never forget those blue and yellow jackets! My ag teacher and FFA advisor was Sherwood Jackson at Seneca High School. I’ll never forget the way he drilled it into our heads the respect we needed to have for those jackets and what they stood for, the respect for our school, other teachers, our elders, etc. Most of us probably still have our jackets-mine doesn’t fit like it used to!! It’s amazing what the Registered Holstein cow has done for me and where she has taken me. Also I think of all the good and wonderful people I’ve met and have become good friends with because of the Registered Holstein cow. I love the poem that Amy Schaufelberger Hoover wrote about “These Cows.” It is good for us to stop and all reflect on some of these things. I want to say “congratulations” to every one who exhibited at all the different districts shows, county fairs, State Fair, and State Show, both junior and senior members. Also, want to wish you the best of luck to everyone who may be showing at World Dairy Expo. The Illinois Holstein Picnic will be over by the time you read this, but I look forward to seeing everyone there. I know the David Butler family will be very gracious hosts and we will have very good fellowship. Thank you Bluff-Ridge for hosting us. Looking forward to seeing every one and visiting with you in Madison next month. Until next time,

Ed Smith

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois Holstein enthusiasts, My name is Ellie Lenkaitis and I am honored to serve as your 2018-2019 Illinois Holstein Duchess. I am the daughter of Albert and Jodi Lenkaitis. My family owns and operates Five-West Dairy in Winnebago, Illinois. My sister Emma and I enjoy working on the farm with our parents. I am currently a senior at University of Wisconsin Platteville majoring in Dairy Science. I had a great time at Illinois State Show getting to know the other contestants and passing out ribbons. I also had the pleasure of attending the Illinois State Fair for the first time in my life. Congratulations to all the exhibitors and the high quality of cattle shown. Thank you to the Butler family for hosting the State Picnic. It was a great opportunity to visit with many of you and see a beautiful facility. I hope you all have a safe and plentiful harvest! I look forward to seeing you at future Holstein events this year. Best wishes,

Ellie Lenkaitis

Illinois Holstein Herald

Greetings Holstein breeders, The old saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun!” sure holds true as we find ourselves heading into fall. Since the last issue, this summer has been full of interesting activities for Holstein people. The Holstein USA Annual Meeting, hosted by the Michigan Association and held in Traverse, Michigan, proved to be an enjoyable time for all attending. A full schedule of Junior contests and activities kept the younger members busy. Delegates were informed of Association updates, and everyone enjoyed the Michigan scenery and hospitality. Congratulations to all individuals and herds recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. Directors Pat Maddox from California and Paul Buhr from Wisconsin were recognized for their six years of dedicated service to the Holstein industry as members of the Holstein USA board. Best wishes go out to Paul on his recent success in the August primary election for the Wisconsin assembly. He now hopes for final victory in the November general election. Good luck! Newly elected to the board were Bill Genasci from California and Robert Webb from Wisconsin. Incumbents John Marshman of New York and John Anderson of Idaho were reelected for a second three- year term. As the depressed dairy economy continues to haunt farmers, there is still good news to be found in the midst of Junior Holstein work. Junior and senior members continue to promote the registered Holstein cow with pride and enthusiasm. Just watch them and their work with their cattle at the county or state, district or national shows and one can find reason to trust in the future of the dairy industry. Our Midwest dairy family is very proud of their accomplishments and grateful for their leadership! Hopefully, many of you have watched the second edition of “Holstein America” aired on RFD TV. If you missed it, you can still watch it on the Holstein USA website. On the national level, registrations, transfers, and classifications are down from last year. However, there are positives to be found! Holstein Complete continues to offer financial savings, and field staff are always available for personal assistance. Agri-Tech Dairy Records Processing revenues are very positive, and the ongoing IT project is nearing completion. This has been a major undertaking and will benefit both staff and association members. A final positive development has been to see the successful efforts made in demanding the correct labeling of milk and refusing to allow milk substitutes to gain a share of the market with their false advertising. As World Dairy Expo approaches, it is time to plan ahead in order to make time for this experience of outstanding Holsteins on Parade! Here’s hoping everyone has a safe and bountiful Harvest! Your National Directors, Boyd Schaufelberger, President Corey Geiger, Vice-President Dale Drendel Mark Kerndt Robert Webb Page 3
