Fall 2019

STATE HOLSTEIN PICNIC AT LENKAITIS HOLSTEINS The 2019 State Holstein Picnic was hosted by Lenkaitis Holsteins is located in St. Charles, Illinois – a suburb just 40 miles west of Chicago on Sunday, September 15. The family dairy farm was started by Albert Sr. and Mary Etta in 1983 with just five animals. Today, the farm consists of 160 Registered Holsteins and is enjoyed by three generations of the Lenkaitis family. The hallmark of the herd has been developing Red & White genetics with balanced type and production. Albert and Mary Etta’s youngest son Andy, along with his wife, Sarah, live on the property just north of the farm. Starting in November 2014, both began working closely with Albert Sr. and Mary Etta to manage Lenkaitis Holsteins. In addition to working on the farm, Andy works for GEA and Sarah is a freelance writer and secretary for the Illinois Holstein Association. Andy and Sarah own several cows together as Andara Holsteins. Last year the farm underwent a renovation, moving the herd from the 37 cow tie-stall barn to a new 110 cow freestall barn. The new barn has been outfitted with latest technology from GEA including an automatic manure scraper, manure solids separator, cow brushes and two GEA Monoboxes for automated milking. Thank you to the Lenkaitis family for hosting and sharing your new facility with us!

FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to Illinois Holstein members and guests, This is coming from Greencastle, Pennsylvania, where it is absolutely beautiful. Sunshine, with a high today of 79 degrees, on September 18th. Corn silage is done. Beans are being combined. High moisture corn is being put in the Harvestores--life is good. I really believe the best crops in the country, this year, are in Pennsylvania. This past Sunday, we were in St. Charles for the Illinois State Holstein Picnic. WOW!! The Lenkaitis family went “all out” to host all of us. Thank you very much for all that was done for us. Your cattle are very impressive. The most modern and latest technology and automation was on display that day. They have an excellent meeting room also. Last, but not least, the food was very good--potlucks from farm wives are always great. The next big event on the calendar will take place, just a few miles north of the Illinois state line, in Madison, Wisconsin--World Dairy Expo. That says it all--WDE needs no explanation. I wish all you Illinois exhibitors the very best at WDE. I hope everyone of you have a safe harvest. I can’t stress enough, the need to be cautious. Fingers, arms, and legs, will not grow back. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Committee Meetings in January and the Illinois State Holstein Convention in February. Hope to see many of you at the upcoming events. Until next time,

Ed Smith

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello everyone! It is an honor to be serving as your 2019-2020 Illinois Holstein Dutchess. I am the daughter of Amy & Doug Raber of Gridley, Illinois. Being able to represent the Holstein breed at various statewide events will be exciting and rewarding. As this year’s Dutchess, my first official duties were to present ribbons and awards at the Illinois Championship Holstein Junior and Open Shows. It was fun to share this experience with Kelly O’Connor, this year’s Little Miss Holstein. During the Illinois State Fair in August, I volunteered in the Dairy Building for a few days to help support our great industry and interact with the public. In addition, Kelly and I were able to once again present ribbons together to all of great Holstein breeders. Early September provided the opportunity to interact with visitors at the Gunderson Family Farm Open House in unveiling their brand new milking robots! It will be fun to see and visit with all who are attending the State Picnic hosted by the Lenkaitis family. Until then, I am working with my animals to prepare them for World Dairy Expo. I am very excited to represent all of the hard working Holstein breeders and farmers this year. Promoting and educating others about agriculture, the dairy industry and the Holstein breed is very important for me. I wish you all have a safe harvest, no matter when it might be this year!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Illinois Holstein Association, When I opened the show booklet for the Illinois Holstein Championship Show in July, I couldn’t have been more surprised than to see that the show had been dedicated to me. A very humbling and heartfelt thank you for this honor. Since coming to Illinois thirty years ago to work with Golden Oaks Farm, my family and I have met many great people in the Holstein Association and dairy industry. We are glad to call you friends. We have really enjoyed being a part of the Illinois Holstein Association and participating in many activities. You have certainly touched our lives. Again, I would like to thank the Illinois Holstein Association for this great honor. I would also like to thank Golden Oaks for bringing our family to Illinois and this great group of people. Sincerely, Gary Janssen

NATIONAL BOARD

DISTRICT SHOW REPORTS Effingham

What a year for agriculture. If you like extremes this is it. We experienced extreme wet, cold, hot, dry, and for the dairymen, extreme low income, but we are eternal optimists and plan on better days. Your National Holstein Association has many parallels to the dairy industry. The Holstein USA annual meeting always helps lift spirits. Held in Appleton, Wisconsin, it was a fun and educational event. Congratulations to all the individuals, herds, and especially our juniors who bring the enthusiasm that we sometimes need. Many thanks again to retiring President Boyd Schaufelberger and Director Mark Kerndt for their contributions to the Association. Our newly elected board members are as follows, President Corey Geiger, Vice President Jonathan Lamb, and new director from Minnesota Director Spencer Hackett. Re-elected to board was Peter Dueppengiesser, Steve Keene, and Benjamin Newberry. A genetic conference was a huge success. Numerous speakers, some from genetic companies, academia, and private business helped in understand the role of genomics in our industry. It was an opportunity to hear how other industries have addressed some of our same concerns. Our staff has been busy attending meetings regarding the Dairy Price Stabilization (DPSP). Had that program been used we would have a much better price outlook. We are working with Congressional Staff in Washington D.C. on the milk labeling law and hope to see it resolved soon. The dairy products export issues are ongoing and are quite detailed. Getting a common marketing plan for the entire USA is about as likely as peace in the Mideast! You need to check out the Holstein website. Links to new and updated programs such as Red Book Plus mating guide are awaiting you. Holstein Marketplace Sires is a link that is sure to interest the most discriminating breeder. A new venture that we are undertaking is HOLSim Beef. A list of sires that combine Holstein and Simmental genetics to be used on lower genetic valued females are used to satisfy the growing bull calf market. There have been updates to the Red Book online software. Staff deserves a big thank you for their efforts. If interested in these programs contact your field representative or fill out the form on the web site. From a business standpoint the association has stalled a little in growth in some areas. Our partnership with Zoetis has been a great marriage. The milk processing lab in California (ATA) has seen an increase in cow numbers from fewer herds. Do you see the parallel to the entire dairy industry? As we roll into fall, a nice bump up in the milk price has finally happened! Let’s hope and pray it’s here for awhile. With the fall harvest underway, let’s be grateful for the abundance we have and safety of our fellow dairymen. Hello Illinois Juniors! As the summer shows are now calming down, I hope that your start of school was a breeze. At the State Show in Bloomington this summer, our juniors auctioned off two holstein cow paintings during the Junior show. We would like to thank everyone for supporting our juniors and helping fundraise our trip to National Convention. Also at the State Show, Addison Raber was crowned as our new Holstein Dutchess. The 4-H Quiz Bowl team that will compete in Louisville, Kentucky at NAILE consists of Taylor Huels, Regan Scidmore, Hannah Alberts, and Addie Raber. The 4-H Dairy Judging team that will compete in Madison, Wisconsin. at World Dairy Expo consists of Payton Erbsen, Lane Heinzmann, Briley Lenkaitis, and Zach Paul. I wish all the juniors good luck at World Dairy Expo and NAILE.
