BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Heinz-Hope Farm, Carlyle

Heinz-Hope Farm is located in rural Carlyle in eastern Clinton County. They are a centennial farm and there are now five generations that have been located at their home farm. Currently involved at the home farm where they manage approximately 800 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat are Nelson and Bonnie Heinzmann and Aaron and Jenn Heinzmann along with their children Lane, Brady and Samantha. They had a farm dispersal in 1995 and were completely out of the Holstein business until 2007. Today, they raise just a few registered Holstein heifers and their few milk cows are housed at DoDel Holsteins in Ferrin, Illinois. Heinz-Hope Farm has been involved in the registered Holstein business since Mr. Bert Sinclair brought a group of Canadian heifers to Clinton County for 4-H youth to select from. Aaron’s father came out of that drawing with Doug-Dale Joyce Hope. That was also the beginning of the Heinz-Hope prefix still used today. They have always been very involved in showing cattle winning Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor for 11 consecutive years at the Clinton County Black & White Show. They were also fortunate to win banners at the Illinois Championship Holstein Show and the Illinois State Fair. With their involvement now, the Heinzmann family focuses on trying to breed and develop high quality, deep pedigreed animals that can go on a be productive cows. High type cattle has been a major area of interest and focal point of their breeding

The Heinzmann Family of Heinz-Hope Farm

program. However, they have bred a few Polled animals now, and the occasional higher genomic animal. Some of the main family lines they are currently breeding from include GoldenOaks Champ Rae, Savage-Leigh Lavish and Penn-Gate Skychief Finesse. Daughters in the herd are sired by Atwood, Aftershock, Destry, Goldsun, Goldchip, Ladd-P, Armani and Kingboy and they are currently using Destry, Brazzle, Blake and Corvette as service sires. With regards to the future of the Holstein breed, Aaron shares, “I believe there will

Lane Heinzmann was one of the members of the team that won the National Dairy Bowl Contest at the National Holstein Convention in 2015 Illinois Holstein Herald

always be a place for high type animals in the breed. Clearly though, the registered breeder must be aware of the genetics needs in today’s commercial dairies and consumer preferences.” The next generation, Lane, Brady and Samantha are all actively involved in IJHA activities and Aaron hopes the IHA continues to serve its missions of promoting the Holstein Cow, serving its members and educating consumers on the benefits of milk products in daily diets.

Congratulations to Samantha Heinzmann for being named the 2015/2016 Little Miss Holstein! Page 3

FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone, The calendar is quickly turning to spring and it won’t be long that I am sure everybody will be up to their ears hauling m a n u r e , planting corn and putting up hay. Spring is always a time of hustle and bustle, but just never seems complete without sort of kicking things off with a few cow sales and we have many of those coming this spring. They are always a great chance to get away from the farm for a day and spend some time catching up with your Holstein friends that you may not have seen for a while. I know that many of you spend time throughout the winter and early spring making plans for the upcoming seasons during this time and the work of the Illinois Holstein Association is no different. A couple months ago we conducted our winter planning meetings. Many good ideas were exchanged and although many things won’t change much, there are a few things worth noting. First of all, the 2016 State Show will be moving back to Bloomington. Past President Olbrich kept this moving forward and also managed to save the Association about $1,500 along the way. The board has also created a couple committees that have tasks

related to moving Illinois Holstein forward into the future. First a committee made up of Dale Drendel, Bob Fruend, Carol Jones and Boyd Schaufelberger have been charged with the task of looking at what makes the most sense to the Association regarding fiscal year dates, timing of State Convention and winter planning meetings. If you have any opinions, let them know. We have also established a Financial Advisory Committee charged with making recommendations to the board on how to handle the current surpluses in the State Treasury. Bernie Heisner is chairing the committee and the rest of the members are Howard Dust, Sarah Lenkaitis, Ed Smith and Rod Stoll. Again, if you have ideas or opinions, please let them know. One of my goals as President is to keep the Illinois Holstein Association relevant to all of its members and part of achieving this goal is through planning and listening. I urge you to share any ideas that you have with your board members or with me directly so that if there are things we can add or eliminate or improve upon, we know your thoughts. Many good and new ideas were kicked around at the committee meetings and I want to keep them coming from you. More input makes for a stronger organization, so when you see your friends out and about this spring at the various sales and events, take a minute to visit about how we can make things even better than they are now.

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois! I would like to start off by saying that I had a great time at Spring Thing 2016! The competition was on fire, the speeches were phenomenal, and the folding displays looked terrific! Also, Family Game Night was a great way to end a day of competition. Thank you to everyone who was there, and I hope you had as great of a time as I had! In response to some of the negative comments going around on social media lately, I would like to remind everyone to please share stories or information in a positive and concise way to explain to some of our fellow consumers the truth in our industry. “You can catch more flies with honey, that you do with vinegar” as my grandma would say. Also, let’s remember Stephanie Stout’s presentation at Spring Thing about how to AgVocate in a positive way!

DISTRICT NEWS NORTHWEST Greetings Holstein friends! Winter here in the Northwest District has been relatively mild compared to the months of sub-zero temps we had last year, but we are still looking forward to spring and the excitement of new beginnings the season brings with it. Our new officer slate for 2016 is as follows: President-Brett Zimmerman, Vice-PresidentRob Gunderson, Treasurer-Lisa Ollerich, Secretary- Darcy Steffes, Reporter- Kathy Miller and Directors are Jerry Smith and John Erbsen. CONGRATULATIONS BOB! In midJanuary, Bob Miller and grand-daughter Lorilee Schultz attended Swiss Expo in Lausanne, Switzerland. Swiss Expo is Europe’s version of World Dairy Expo in Madison; it has perhaps even more flash and glamour than Madison, but not as big. It is an all Europe show with eight breeds showing and it attracts over 1,200 head. Bob and Lorilee thought the Red & White show was just superb! Large numbers with high quality right to the last animal. They felt the Red & White show even surpassed WDE. This year was the 20th Anniversary of Swiss Expo and one of the highlights of the show was an EX 20-year-old Triple Threat daughter that had shown as a calf at the very first Expo and went on to produce over 340,000 lbs. lifetime. She was paraded around the ring to a standing ovation and cheers from the crowd that lasted over five minutes! Bob & Lorilee’s favorite cow at the whole show was a Rubens daughterwinner of the “long time class.” She is 14 years old and to date has over 320,000 lbs. lifetime. She is scored EX95, was Best Udder and moved like a three year old. Bob was disappointed that

she was not chosen for Grand Champion. He said he had never seen a cow with over 300,000 lbs. milk that looked that correct and youthful. Bob Miller and Ken Trevena of Hanoverhill were invited by Swiss Expo and were surprised and honored to receive a “Lifetime Breeder Acheivement” recognition presented on the colored shavings with the roar of the crowd to commemorate the honor. Swiss Expo provided airfare, hotel for 6 days, all local transportation and each were given a beautiful Swiss watch. Congratulation Bob & Ken - Thank you for your contributions to the Holstein breed! Obituary: Bill Angle, age 90, of Dakota, died December 2, 2015. He was born June 10, 1925 and was the son of Helen & William “Ray” Angle Sr. Bill was a lifetime Stephenson Co. dairy farmer as well as being a WWII veteran, where he served as an U.S. Navy Airman. Throughout his life he was an active member in his community, church, VFW, Farm Bureau, and state and local Holstein Associations. Bill was a well known and respected Holstein breeder in Northwest Illinois. His father established an early registered Holstein herd in 1905, which Bill continued uninterupted for a remarkable 110 years for a father and son. Bill and his dad were long time showmen who garnered many grand champion wins in Stephenson Co. shows. In 1972, the Illinois State Black & White Show was dedicated to the Angles in honor of their long and substantial contributions to Illinois Holsteins. Bill remained in quite good health until just a few days before his death. He was a regular participant at the local coffee hour and his friendship and knowledge will be sorely missed. Respectfully submitted, Kathy Miller

FROM THE NATIONAL BOARD_____________ Dear Holstein Breeders, On behalf of your Midwest National Directors, Paul Buhr, Dale Drendel, Mark Kerndt and Vice-President Boyd Schaufelberger, I will author our spring update. We changed our reporting style this time because I had the opportunity to attend the Holstein Association USA Member update meeting in Modesto, Calif., held in conjunction with the 77th annual meeting of the California Holstein Association. From a registration standpoint, the Association posted a wonderful year. There were 382,990 Holsteins registered with the 1 Holstein Place. To put that in perspective, 373,056 Holsteins were registered in 2014; 301,852 in 2005 and 293,527 in 2004. To say the least, interest in Holsteins is running strong. When combining registrations and Basic IDs, 581,866 Holsteins were identified last year. If you are doing the math, that means 198,876 animals were added to the Holstein database using Basic ID. Of course, we hope to move as many of those animals to the full registration process in ensuing generations. Genomic testing continues to run strong. Last year, 285,458 genomic tests were performed on Holstein females. “Since we started tracking genomic testing

Illinois Holstein Herald

back in 2008, there have been 1,054,743 tests run and recorded on Holsteins cattle,” noted CEO John Meyer. “By comparison, there have been just 138,043 genomic tests performed and recorded on the next largest dairy breed in the United States.” It takes shear numbers and data to create genetic progress. By that barometer, Holstein leads all dairy cattle and all domesticated mammals on the planet. During that California gathering, a few other Association metrics were discussed. When evaluating registrations by state, the Midwest is a lifeblood of the Association. Five Upper Midwest states ranked in the top 10 for registrations. Wisconsin accounted for 21 percent of the activity. Minnesota and Michigan posted 5 percent each; Iowa, 4 percent and Illinois 3 percent. The only states that posted higher totals were New York and Pennsylvania, 13 percent each; California, 6 percent; Ohio 5, percent and Washington, 3 percent. Last

year, Wisconsin expanded registrations by 4.3 percent as well. Other states growing included (in percentage order): New York, Washington, Michigan, Texas and New Mexico. Interest in genomic testing is mirrored by embryo transfer (ET) registrations. In 2005, 17,000 ET calves were registered and that number grew to 37,000 last year. In fact, almost 10 percent of all registrations were either ET or IVF calves in 2015. Red and White Holsteins also have shown tremendous growth over the last decade moving from 6,000 to just shy of 13,000 registrations. Polled Holstein shows a similar trend moving from less than 300 registrations in 2004 to 4,000 last year. At this year’s national convention in New York, four important elections will take place. Mark Kerndt will run for a second term in Region 6. Meanwhile, directors in Region 1 (Pete Waterman), Region 4 (Gayle Carson) and at-large (Corey Geiger) have all served two terms and are ineligible for re-election. It sounds like each of these seats will have at least two candidates running . . . in many cases three. The final nominating committee conference call takes place on March 8. After that the official slate of candidates will be available. On behalf of the Midwest National Directors, Corey Geiger

BOARD MEETING MINUTES January 8, 2016 Bloomington, IL The January 8, 2016 Board of Directors meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association was called to order at 2:55 p.m. at The Chateau Conference Center in Bloomington. Secretary Tina Yagow took roll call with 19 Board members, 3 staff members, 3 Committee Chairs, and 7 guests present. Dale Drendel moved to accept the minutes of the December Board Meeting as printed, Aaron Heinzmann seconded, and the motion carried. Treasurer Carol Jones presented the Treasurer’s Report. Aaron Mitchell moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report which was seconded by Brian Olbrich and the motion passed. Editor Stephanie Stout spoke about the Herald and how the website has been redesigned and is now updated. More updates will continue to be added. Dave Fischer reminded the Board of the dates and locations of the three IMPA Dairy Summits – January 19th in Freeport, January 21st in Centralia, and January 22nd in Bloomington. Tim Ewing spoke on behalf of Holstein USA saying new reports will be sent to members when they classify. He wants to remind everyone about the registration price increase that goes into effect February 1st unless you are a Holstein Complete member. Boyd Schaufelberger and Dale Drendel said registrations are up and the number of herds in the Complete program have gone up also. OLD BUSINESS None of our clubs have agreed to host the 2016 State Convention. President Oertel is still trying to find a host club. The Chairman of the Financial Advisory Committee will be Bernie Heisner. The purpose of the Committee is to review the funds of the Association after the 2015 National Convention to determine how much should be kept in a fund for future National Conventions, how much should be kept for future operating expenses, and other ideas. The idea of changing the dates of the Fiscal Year was brought up again following the original idea at the December Board Meeting. Boyd Schaufelberger moved that the Board President appoint a committee of three people plus the State Treasurer to investigate options regarding the Fiscal Year and State Convention/Annual Meeting time frame of the Association and report to the full Board at the June meeting. The motion was seconded by Jerry Smith and the motion carried. Additional discussion took place and a straw poll showed most members preferred moving the Annual Meeting/ Convention to February. Another straw poll Illinois Holstein Herald

was taken regarding when committee meetings should take place and varying opinions were voiced, most people were undecided at this point. NEW BUSINESS 2016 Committee Reports Dutchess/Little Miss Holstein Dutchess/Little Miss Holstein Committee Report given by Jason Oertel on behalf of Lori Lyons. The competition will be held July 20th in the show ring. No additional rule changes have been made, but the committee does want to make sure the current printed rules reflect the changes made back in 2013. Budget: -$1,000. Motion to approve the Dutchess/Little Miss Committee report was made by Aaron Heinzmann, seconded by Brian Olbrich, and the motion carried. Futurity Futurity Committee Report given by CoChairman Ed Smith. The Illinois Futurity Show will be July 22nd with Joel Phoenix as the judge. The only clarification/change made to the show is that the first seven places of 5-year-old Futurity animals are supposed to get money, but if there aren’t seven entries, the extra money should go to the 1st place winner. Budget: $0 Association funds Motion to approve the Futurity Committee Report was made by Jerry Smith, seconded by Harvey Harpstrite and approved by the Board. Governmental Affairs Governmental Affairs Committee Report given by Chairman Dale Drendel. Updates on rules on Raw Milk Sales in Illinois were shared with everyone. EPA rules have not changed drastically but they are continuously watching nitrate levels and testing water. Dairymen need to start documenting what they are doing to regulate nitrates getting into the water supply. Dead animal removal is a growing concern and it was suggested as a topic to discuss at future Dairy Summits. Budget: $0 Association funds Motion to approve the Governmental Affairs Committee Report was made by Boyd Schaufelberger, seconded by Brian Olbrich and the motion carried. Juniors Junior Advisory Committee Report presented by Chairman Glen Meier. Spring Thing will be February 27th and 28th at the Parke Regency in Bloomington where the State Senior Convention

was in December 2015. The Allen Tucker Award has run its course, so it is no longer available. There have been complaints about Junior meetings being too long, so only Juniors will be allowed to speak and they must use the microphone to speak one at a time. Senior Advisors are on a 3-year rotation beginning with Glen Meier, then John Mitchell and Tricia Zehr. The JAC will talk about transition of their bank accounts under the IHA umbrella at the Spring Thing. It was projected the Junior’s budget would show a loss of $11,000, primarily due to upcoming National Convention travel expenses. Budget: $5,000 in Association funds Motion to approve the Junior Advisory Committee Report was made by Herb Schmiedeskamp, seconded by Ethan Heinzmann, and the motion carried. Membership Membership Committee Report given by Chairman Ed Smith. The Committee recommends local clubs work harder to get members to renew and new ones to join because membership numbers decreased this Fiscal Year. To encourage membership, the Committee will seek out coupons and discounts for members which will be mailed to members upon receipt of their paid dues by June 1. Membership forms will be mailed by the state staff by February 15th. If members do not renew their membership, they will not receive the Fall Herald or future ones until paid. Boyd Schaufelberger moved we try accepting PayPal payments for one year. The motion was seconded by Jeff Thorman and the motion carried. Budget: $19,675 profit Motion to approve the Membership Committee Report was made by Herb Schmiedeskamp, seconded by Aaron Mitchell and approved by the Board. PDCA Calf Sale PDCA Calf Sale Committee Report submitted by Chairman Ron Schaufelberger. The 2016 PDCA Calf Sale will be held at the Champaign County Fairgrounds on April 9, 2016. The advertising deadline for the Herald will be February 5th. March 1st is the consignment deadline and they are looking for at least 25 calves. They would prefer calves no older than summer yearlings. The commission will remain at 10%. Budget: $0 Association funds Motion to approve the PDCA Calf Sale Report was made by Joe Engel, seconded by Ray Hess, and the motion carried. continued on page 12 Page 11

BOARD MEETING MINUTES January 8, 2016 Bloomington, IL continued from page 11 Public Relations Public Relations Committee Report submitted by Chairman Aaron Heinzmann. The website has been redesigned and looks really nice. The National Convention breeder videos will be added soon and links to other sites like Dairy Agenda will be looked into. The cookbooks and display have been retired. The committee is referring to the Membership Committee the decision of when to stop sending Herald issues to members who have not paid. The committee recommends Stephanie look into the summer Herald being a Midwest issue by talking to the other states involved. The committee recommends a Spring Herald photo contest be held on Facebook so the winner would get on the cover of the Spring Herald. Illinois Holstein of the Year competition would also be on Facebook and the winner announced at State Convention. Budget: -$1,000 for Publications, -$175 for Promotions; and break even for Website Brian Olbrich moved to accept the Public Relations Committee report, seconded by Boyd Schaufelberger and the motion carried. State Sales State Sales Committee Report given by Chairman Eddie Bue. The State Sale will be held in the southern part of the state this year, possibly October 22nd in Carlyle. The Committee would like to have 90 lots. Discussion took place about the Futures Sale or changing it to a Tag Sale. For 2017, when Nate Janssen will be chairman, they discussed the possibility of the sale being in the spring and it will be in the northern part of the state. Budget: $5,000 profit for Illini Golden Opportunity Sale, $2,500 profit for Futures Sale Motion to approve the State Sales Committee Report was made by Jerry Smith, seconded by Harvey Harpstrite, and the motion carried. State Show State Show Committee Report given by Chairman Joe Engel. The Open Show will be Friday, July 22nd at the Interstate Center in Bloomington and Joel Phoenix will judge. Cattle can move in Tuesday, July 19th, bedding can be put in Monday, but no cattle. Someone from the Association needs to be there for gate set-up on Monday. The cost of the fairgrounds at the Interstate Center is $4,300. The manure/ bedding will be spread on fields, so cans, strings, etc., need to be kept out of the wheelbarrows. All trash needs to be cleaned up so they don’t raise the price for us next year. Alcohol will be Illinois Holstein Herald

allowed as long as a “dram shop” endorsement is included in our liability policy. If a cow is eligible for the 150,000-pound class, the exhibitor has to decide if they want her to be in Aged Cow or 150,000-pound class. Entry deadline will be July 11th and if the entry fee and form are postmarked by then, the entry fee will be $20, after that date each entry will be $25. No refunds will be given, but animals can be substituted. We are encouraging members to fill out the entry forms online and pay via PayPal. The Committee asks that State Show fund balances accrue year-to-year and be earmarked for State Show. Budget: Break even Motion to approve the State Show Committee Report was made by Steve Irwin, seconded by Rodger Koehn and the motion carried. Planning and Evaluation Planning and Evaluation Committee Report given by President Jason Oertel. This year a Planning Meeting was again held before the Committee meetings with most of the Committee Chairmen in attendance. After the Committee meetings, an Evaluation and Budgeting meeting took place. During the budget discussion, John Erbsen moved that the Association allocate $5,000 to the Juniors payable by June 1st. Herb Schmeideskamp seconded the motion and the motion was approved by the committee. Harvey Harpstrite moved to approve the budget as presented. Jerry Smith seconded the motion and the motion carried. Mitchell’s Holsteins of Winnebago will host the 2016 State Picnic. Date to be determined later. Discussion took place about the Illinois PDCA and whether it still serves a purpose and what that purpose should be. Dave Fischer and other PDCA board members would like to know people’s opinions by this fall. Brian Olbrich moved to table the discussion until the June Board meeting.

Motion to adjourn was made by Howard Dust, seconded by Ray Hess and the motion carried. Meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Tina Yagow, Secretary

JUNIOR REPORTER’S MESSAGE

Hello Juniors! Of course, this time of year is always filled with Dairy Bowl talk, as juniors from all around the state prepare for Spring thing. I’m excited to see the posters and listen to the speeches. My favorite event at Spring Thing, however, is Dairy Bowl. Anybody who has ever done dairy bowl has their “favorite question” that they love to answer. Mine, for example, is the alternate name for Johne’s disease, known as Mycobacterium Paratuberculosis. Whether your favorite answer is hard to say or just a funny answer, like how there should be a “dimple” in the middle of a manure pile, these answers still help us gain knowledge of the dairy industry. If you have or had a favorite dairy bowl question or answer, let’s hear about it! Help get Illinois pumped for Spring Thing 2016 by posting your favorite question or answer to the Illinois Junior Holstein Association’s Facebook page! Illinois claimed both the National junior and senior dairy bowl titles at convention last year; let’s keep our momentum going as we head out to Saratoga Springs, New York! Page 14
