Spring 2017
2016 marked the crowning of the 50th Illinois Holstein Dutchess. We were excited to celebrate 50 years of Illinois Holstein Dutchesses at this year’s Illinois Senior Holstein Convention. The Illinois Holstein Dutchess program began in 1967 with the first contest held the evening before the Illinois State Black & White Show, now called the Illinois Championship Show. Karen (Ryan) Harms was selected as the very first Illinois Holstein Dutchess. Her family helped her come up with the title and Dutchess is spelled with a “t” since the Holstein breed originated in the Netherlands. Selection was based on appearance, personality and knowledge of the Holstein breed and the dairy industry. The Illinois Holstein Dutchess serves a one-year-term representing the Illinois Holstein Association at various events including shows, sales and conventions. The Dutchess also writes articles in her “Dutchess Domain” for the Illinois Holstein Herald. Thank you for joining us in celebrating 50 years of Illinois Holstein Dutchesses!

FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello again everyone, I sit down to write this shortly after the conclusion of our State Convention, I appreciate everyone that took time out of their busy schedules to attend this year and especially want to thank all of the past Dutchesses that could attend. They were certainly the big highlight of the evening and it was a whole lot of fun getting to visit with them. Although I didn’t get the chance to visit with each and every one, I did get to talk to many of them. It was fun to hear the stories as they reminisced on their time as Illinois Holstein Dutchess. Another special part of the banquet is getting to recognize some of the most dedicated people that Illinois Holstein has to offer with recognition of our Distinguished Junior Breeder-Ethan Heinzmann, Distinguished Senior BreedersBruce and Joyce Clanton and Distinguished Service Award-Larry Kleiner. It was certainly a great night. I also want to thank Pat and Ed Smith, Brian Olbrich, Jerry and Sharon Smith, Stephanie Hammerly, Tina Yagow, Carol Jones, Tricia Zehr, Ann Marie Irwin, Rodger Koehn and Herb Schmeideskamp for their extraordinary efforts to help pull the different parts of this convention together. One thing that I was again reminded of on multiple different instances during our convention was the quality group of people that
make up our organization. Our convention speaker, Greg Siegman, remarked on how incredibly nice and genuine our group is. Many of the past Dutchesses that hadn’t been back in a while remarked on how welcome we made them feel even if they didn’t see a lot of faces they recognized from back in the day. Even River Road Trio, the band that played at our dance, mentioned how much fun they had dining with our group. It really was one of those moments that made me very proud to represent such a fine group of Holstein enthusiasts and I wanted to pass those compliments on to the rest of you. As for state business, one thing that I wanted to mention was that we have a committee, chaired by Kevin Wendling, that is going to do a comprehensive review of the Association’s Constitution and By-Laws. Although there have been a few changes over the years, a complete review has not been done in a number of years and the board felt that it was time to take a look and make sure that they are still relevant. You can find the current version on the website and if you have any suggestions or recommendations for changes, please contact Kevin or myself and we will ask the committee to consider them. I should also thank all of our committee chairs for their work leading up to and at our annual committee meetings. Please take a little time to read through the committee reports, although there weren’t many changes to our programs, there were a few that may impact some folks, especially with the show rules. I look forward to seeing everyone again as we move into the spring sale season and wish all of the consignors and the new buyers luck with their purchases.

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois! I would like to start off by saying I had a wonderful time at the 50 years of Illinois Holstein Dutchesses Celebration! Seeing so many past Dutchesses was a real treat! It was also great to see their photos and visit with them. They all had wonderful stories to tell about representing the Illinois Holstein Association. Spring Thing is coming up! I am excited to be able to compete again this year. I am sure it will be a great time as it always is. I am looking forward to hearing speeches and viewing creative and informative posters. The best part about Spring Thing is spending time with fellow Junior Holstein members. We may be competing against each other, but the friendships we form will last a lifetime. Good luck to everyone attending Spring Thing this year.

Hopefully, we won’t have to pay for it in March with a snowstorm! Everyone wants to get out there and spread manure, plant corn and put hay up. FROM THE NATIONAL BOARD_ DISTRICT NEWS Dear Holstein Breeders, The pace of our industry is evident in everything going on at Holstein USA! In 2016, 690,000 animals were identified, more than ever before, and 18% over last year. Holstein Complete enrolled cows were up 9%. The technology project is progressing. HAUSA is investing in this new network that will result in the capability to better serve members with information, and new online tools. Already you can go to our webpage to learn all you need to know about Polled Holsteins, and our inbreeding calculator is a great way to make sure your matings stay in your comfort zone for inbreeding. Three new traits have been added to Holstein pedigrees this year. Feed Efficiency, Fertility Index, and Sire Calving Ease are now displayed on all pedigree versions for the subject, the sire, and the dam. Inclusion of these traits make it easy to use these factors in your breeding decisions. The next months will include an opportunity for attending our HAUSA Judges Conference in Stillwater Oklahoma on April 7. The Type Advisory Committee and the Genetic Advancement Committee will meet in March. These grassroots committees give our membership the ability to steer the breed into the future.
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY
Our annual convention is in Bellevue Washington this year, June 28 to July 1. This will be the first year of our increased delegate numbers, giving more members voice in our governing. This year from the Midwest Dale Drendel is up for reelection to the board, and Boyd Schaufelberger is running for president. Corey Geiger from Wisconsin has declared his candidacy for vice president. It promises to be an interesting and exciting event so plan on joining everyone in Washington! It is certainly our pleasure and honor to represent you the members on your Holstein board. Greetings from Mississippi Valley Holstein Club! She was consigned by Golden Oaks Farm and purchased by Jackson Brammier and Lane Heinzmann. BOARD MEETING MINUTES January 8, 2017 - Bloomington, IL
The January 8, 2017 Board of Directors meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association was called to order at 3:05 p.m. at The Chateau Conference Center in Bloomington by President Jason Oertel. Secretary Tina Yagow took roll call with 18 Board members, 3 staff, 4 Committee Chairs, and 3 guests present. Jerry Smith moved to accept the minutes of the October Board Meeting as printed, Dale Drendel seconded, and the motion carried. Treasurer Carol Jones presented the Treasurer’s Report. Aaron Heinzmann moved and Herb Schmiedeskamp seconded to approve the Treasurer’s Report and the motion passed. Editor Stephanie (Stout) Hammerly spoke about the Herald and told the group we now host our own website instead of using Holstein World. The Spring Herald deadline is February 5th. Dave Fischer reminded the Board of the dates and locations of the three IMPA Dairy Summits – February 21st in Freeport, February 22nd in Bloomington, and February 23rd in Centralia. Dale Drendel and Boyd Schaufelberger spoke on behalf of Holstein USA and updated the board on Holstein USA programs and activities. OLD BUSINESS The State Officers will host the State Convention February 4-5, 2017 at The Chateau in Bloomington. The Northwest Club is planning to host the next State Convention. NEW BUSINESS Constitution and By-Law Review – Kevin Wendling will chair a committee to review the constitution and by-laws and to present suggested changes at the October Board meeting. COMMITTEE REPORTS Dutchess/Little Miss Committee Report given by Jason Oertel on behalf of Lori Lyons The 2017 Dutchess and Little Miss Competitions will be held the evening of July 19th with results given the next morning during the Junior Show and Miss Congeniality announced the following day during the Open Show. The committee wants to make sure full, updated rules for the competition are publicized, along with expectations for the winners. Current requirements are attending the Illinois Championship Junior and Open Shows, Illinois State Fair Junior and Open Holstein Shows and Spring Thing and it is suggested the Dutchess attend State Sale, the PDCA Calf Sale and Senior Convention. Since many colleges and high schools resume classes the same week as the Illinois State Fair, candidates may be deterred from entering the competition due to the requirement of attending those shows so the Committee asks the Board to consider moving State Fair to the “suggested” category with the substitute caveat on a permanent basis. Participation in the contest has been in a lull at this time. If anyone has ideas on how to recruit more participants, please share with Chairman Lori Lyons. should also be publicized to encourage more participation. Howard Dust moved we make the State Fair participation “suggested” instead of “required,” Harvey Harpstrite seconded, and the motion carried. Budget: -$1,000 Futurity Committee Report given by Ed Smith on behalf of Wendy Erbsen The Futurity will be celebrating the 50th anniversary this year with the 2-year-old show. We would like to do something special with signage and a section in the show catalog with past winners and past chairmen. Other suggestions can be entertained from the Board of Directors. This will be the first year that the futurity will be asking for funds from the board. Usually the Futurity operates on a zero budget and is self-sustained. This year Darcy Steffes will be taking over the reigns as the co-chairman for a year and then moving in as a sole chairman. The entries have become a huge paperwork burden. The transition to Google docs and Google forms for entries has been started. The process is very time consuming and is about 2 months behind. This transition should allow all futurity exhibitors to see, at any time, all animals that are entered and it will show the exhibitors when all entries were made. We are hoping this helps with the timely entries and deadline. Deadlines have not been made in the past partly at the fault of the chairman and partly at the fault of some of the exhibitors. Transparency is the goal of this transition. The deadline for the entries that would have been due in November 2016 will be February 1, 2017 due to the transition to the new format. History of the futurity will also be available on the Google drive for anyone to review at any time. The general public cannot just access this drive by searching the internet but must first have the access link which can be shared via the web site if the directors deem that appropriate. An additional benefit to using the Google drive is to have a private drive folder with the bank statements and fund balance. This will greatly benefit the State Treasurer. The goal is to only have the bank statement drive available to the State Treasurer and Futurity Committee Chairman. Wendy feels that due to the demands of her job, she hopes the board will accept her recommendation of the addition of a co-chair of Darcy Steffes and retain the assistant chair, Ed Smith, for one year during the transition and the reorganization of the futurity records. Budget: $0 Association funds (Promotions budget will cover $1,500 for anniversary celebration). Motion to approve the Futurity Committee Report was made by Aaron Heinzmann, Jerry Smith seconded, and the motion carried. Governmental Affairs Committee Report given by Chairman Dale Drendel Tasha Bunting of IMPA came and addressed the members, speaking about current issues facing Illinois livestock producers. Items of interest included the veterinary feed directive, nutrient management plans and GMOs. Budget: $0 Association funds
Motion to approve the Governmental Affairs Committee Report was made by Steve Irwin, seconded by John Erbsen, and the motion carried. Membership Committee Report given by Chairman Ed Smith Membership numbers for 2016 were 215 Junior members and 440 Senior members. Senior membership went down just 18 from 2015 while Junior membership remained exactly the same. Fiscal year 2017 membership forms were included in the winter Herald for the first time, rather than doing a separate mailing. We will see how this works this year, whether people respond at the same rate as they have previously when we used a direct mailer and filled in much of the member’s personal information at the top of the form. In 2016 many people utilized the online submission form but not many used Paypal to pay, plus Paypal holds the money for 30 days before allowing us access to it. Another blank form will be mailed separately to those who have not paid by March 1st and an email reminder will be sent March 15th to those who have not paid yet to remind them the late fee is about to go into effect April 1st. The State Secretary will send each Club President and Vice President a list of unpaid members after the April 1st late fee deadline. Board members will get a copy of an updated “unpaid members list” at the June Board Meeting as usual. Budget: $19,000 profit. Motion to approve the Membership Committee Report was made by Dale Drendel, seconded by Harvey Harpstrite and the motion carried. PDCA Calf Sale Committee Report given by Jason Oertel It was unsure if the PDCA would continue activities after 2016, but Darren Ropp has agreed to work with Dave Fischer and Gene McCoy to learn about the Association and possibly take over someday. The group is looking for consignments for the April 1, 2017 PDCA Calf Sale. Deadline to get included in advertising is February 13th and final consignments are needed by March 10th. Calves need to be at the Champaign County Fairgrounds by noon March 31. Budget: $0 Association funds. Motion to approve the PDCA Calf Sale Report was made by Boyd Schaufelberger, Brian Olbrich seconded and the motion carried. Public Relations Committee Report given by Chairman Aaron Heinzmann The 2016 photo contest on Facebook to choose the cover photo for the Spring Herald brought over 300 “likes” for the winning photo alone (8 photos were submitted). The photo contest will be moved to the Winter Herald cover photo for 2017. During 2016, Holstein World did not renew our website and we couldn’t make updates but now we have complete control over the domain name, hosting and updates as of the end of the year. The cost of hosting the website has gone down substantially and we can offset the expense with the money from the Breeder Ads that goes to the website. For promotions, trying to get Spring 2017
nominations for the new “Illinois Holstein of the Year” has yet to yield any nominations. The nomination deadline is January 9th, voting will take place on the Facebook page and the winner will be announced at the Senior Convention in February 2017. The committee recommends the association spends $75 to continue sponsoring a class at World Dairy Expo and also $1,500 to publicize the 50th Anniversary of the Futurity. Budget: -$1,000 for Publications, -$1,675 for Promotions; and breakeven for Website. Aaron Heinzmann moved to accept the Public Relations Committee report, which was seconded by Boyd Schaufelberger and the motion carried. State Sales Committee Report given by Chairman Nate Janssen There was good discussion about the direction of the State Sale and opinions were polarized so at this point it was decided the Sale Chairman would be given authority to choose the date and location of the sale they will chair. Nate Janssen will be the chairman in 2017 with Brian Wesemann assisting him, and they are planning a fall sale in the northern part of the state. Herb Schmiedeskamp spoke about the Futures Sale at the State Convention in February and asked for consignments as soon as possible. Budget: $5,000 profit for Illini Golden Opportunity Sale, $2,500 profit for Futures Sale Motion to approve the State Sales Committee Report was made by John Erbsen, Harvey Harpstrite seconded, and the motion carried. State Show Committee Report given by Chairpersons Joe Engel & Paula Bovre The 2017 Championship Holstein Open Show will be July 21st with Molly Sloan confirmed as judge. The Junior Show will be July 20th with Perry Phend confirmed as judge. We have a multi-year contract with the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington to hold the event there. Exhibitors can set-up Monday of that week, after 12 o’clock noon. Cattle cannot arrive until Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. The exhibitor meeting will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The Committee recommends eliminating the Dry Cow classes and including recognition for a Champion Production Cow. It will be important to announce production winners in each class (Milk and CF&P) and publicize this new award so members will hopefully feel there is more value to filling out production information on their entry forms and bringing production records to the show for verification. The committee

recommends the Executive Committee look into ultrasound and monitoring hair length. The committee recommends BOTH Open and Junior Show exhibitors be allowed to exhibit the same number of animals at State Show that they exhibit at their District show. Budget: Breakeven. Motion to approve the State Show Committee Report was made by Herb Schmiedeskamp. John Erbsen seconded and the motion carried. Youth Committee Report given by Chairman John Mitchell In regards to the State Junior Show, which will be held July 20, 2017, the following rule changes were brought forth by the Youth Committee: It was suggested to change rule #5 which allows for Adult Assistance in the show ring to read “Emergency Assistance will be permitted by another state junior member at the discretion of the Junior Show Chairman where the Junior member cannot properly handle the animal. The motion was seconded by Jerry Smith and carried.It was also suggested to change the minimum age to match National Show rules which say a child must be 9-years-old as of January 1 to show in the Junior Show. The motion was seconded by Aaron Mitchell but the motion failed to obtain majority vote from the Board of Directors. The Committee suggested PeeWee Showmanship be officially added as a class for children 9-years-old and under. Steve Irwin seconded the motion and it carried. Regarding other Junior activities, Spring Thing will be February 25 & 26 at The Chateau in Bloomington. Officers will be elected and the by-laws will be finalized. Much discussion took place about taking a group to National Convention in Washington State since the expenses will be much higher this year due to air travel. The total is estimated at $22,500 and the Juniors plan to use $5,000 of their own funds, have participants pay $5,000 from their participation fees, raise $5,000 from fundraisers like an Embryo Shuffle or something. Brian Olbrich moved the Board of Directors authorize $7,500 from the newly-formed Enhancement Fund to be given when needed to reserve the travel. John Erbsen seconded and the motion passed. DJM and YDJM deadline for 2016 is February 1st and Kyle Mitchell Award deadline is February 15th. For 2018, the DJM and YDJM deadline will be January 1st. Budget: $0 in Association funds ($7,500 from Enhancement Fund for National Convention 2017 travel). Motion to approve the Youth Committee Report was made by Howard Dust,
seconded by Herb Schmiedeskamp and the motion carried. Dale Drendel moved to approve the budget as presented. Herb Schmiedeskamp seconded and the motion carried. Dale Drendel announced he will seek reelection for Holstein USA board in June and asks for support from Illinois Holstein Association. ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES February 4, 2017 - Bloomington, IL The 2017 Annual Meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association was called to order at 9:30 a.m. on February 4th at The Chateau in Bloomington by President Jason Oertel. Fifty members and guests were present. Minutes of the last annual meeting were printed and distributed by Secretary Tina Yagow. Herb Schmieskamp moved to approve the minutes as printed. Joann Hartman seconded the motion and it carried. The Treasurer’s Report was printed and distributed by Treasurer Carol Jones. Jerry Smith moved to approve the report as printed. Howard Dust seconded the motion and it carried. National Director’s Report by Boyd Schaufelberger, Holstein USA Vice-President – registrations were down 1% but still close to an all-time high. 670,000 animals are identified through Basic I.D. which is very high. Boyd spoke about the steps to get on the National Judges list and a conference that will be nearby this spring. National Convention will be in Washington state this summer and Boyd encourages everyone to go enjoy the convention and beautiful scenery. Our state will have 5 delegates this year. Tim Ewing added encouragement to join the Holstein Complete program because it might be more cost-effective now. Extension Report by David Fischer – Stephenson County Farm Bureau will be a new site for the northern Dairy Summer instead of Highland Community College. Dates will be February 21, 22, and 23. Dave thanks all breeders who allowed the judging team to practice at their farms. The State Fair Superior Young Producer scholarship program for this year will be cut back to 3 recipients per species due to decreasing sponsorships. President Oertel thanked FS, Prairie State Select Sires, Prairie Farms, Sunshine Genetics, and International Protein Sires for being sponsors of the 2017 State Convention. OLD BUSINESS Membership: For the 2016 year (April 1-December 31), the Association had about 440 Senior members and 215 Junior members. PDCA: The April 2016 Calf Sale sold 32 head with an average over $2,000. State Show: The 2016 State Show was chaired by Paula Bovre and Joe Engel in Bloomington, Illinois. 143 head were exhibited in the Open Show and 74 in the Junior Show. The 2017 State Show will be July 20 & 21 in Bloomington. Dutchess/Little Miss: The 2016-17 Dutchess is Morgan Olbrich and Little Miss Holstein is Elena Olbrich. State Sale: The 2016 State Sale was chaired by Eddie Bue and held in Carlyle with a sale average of $2,384 on 84 lots. Hello Juniors! Of course, this time of year is always filled with Dairy Bowl talk, as juniors from all around the state prepare for Spring Thing. The 2017 National Junior Holstein Convention is being held in Bellevue, Washington. National conventions are a blast, and a great opportunity to meet other Junior Holstein members from around the country. With that being said, I hope everyone is working hard on posters, speeches, and studying for dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy to be well prepared for the state contest. Also, serving as your 2016-2017 state reporter, I’ll be making a scrapbook and digital scrapbook representing Illinois at Convention. If you have any pictures from the 2016 National Convention from New York, 2016 Spring Thing, or any other IJHA activities from throughout the year, please email them to me at brockirwin98@yahoo.com. Last year my scrapbook placed 2nd and the digital scrapbook got 1st! I hope to continue to represent Illinois with similar success this year in Bellevue, Washington.

To say the 2017 Illinois Senior Holstein Convention was a success would certainly be an understatement... it very much exceeded all of our expectations and we certainly set high expectations. Spring is right around the corner and there are Holstein events filling up nearly every weekend on my calendar!
