SPRING SALE & SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 70th IL PDCA Calf Sale The 70th IL PDCA Calf Sale was held April 7, 2018 at the Champaign County Fairgrounds in Urbana. 25 Holstein lots sold for an average of $1,747. High selling animal at $2,900 was Luck-E Dvour Kookie-ET, a Devour December calf from the 2014 Red & White Cow of the Year, Luck-E Advent Kandie-Red-ET EX-95-2E. She was consigned by Matt Engel and was purchased by Mike Richards of Iowa. Second high seller at $2,600 was Lakeshore Arch Everest-ET, an Archrival September calf from Ludwigs-DG Goldwyn Emmy-ET EX-94-2E. She was consigned by Justin Powell and was purchased by Delbert Dahl.
Midwest Spring Shows The Midwest Spring National Red & White Show was held on April 27, 2018 in Madison, Wisconsin and was judged by Brian Behnke. Illini Golden Opportunity Sale The Illini Golden Opportunity Sale was held April 21, 2018 at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Belvidere. The sale averaged $1,933 on 72 lots. The highest selling animal at $5,500 was Apples-PTS Armella-Red-ET*PC, a Polled Addiction P September calf from KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96-4E DOM. She was consigned by Apple Partners, LLC and purchased by Chris Kimball of Maine. Second high seller at $5,000 was OCD Goldwyn MarcyET, last year’s winning Fall Calf at Illinois State Fair. She was consigned by Nate Janssen and Brian Wesemann and was purchased by Brad Groves of Missouri. Summer 2018

Hello to IL Holstein members and guests, Here it is June 10th and this finds me in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The Amish are about a month behind with their work. They are baling the first cutting of hay, spreading liquid manure from their pits, plowing fields with moldboard plows, and trying to get corn planted with 4-row rebuilt 7000 John Deere planters! This is all being done with teams of horses! Very interesting to see this all being done this way - a lot different than what we see in the Midwest. I was home for about a week at the end of May and compared to Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, Illinois has about the best crops of anybody, so we have a lot to be thankful for. June 1st was the board meeting and it should be no surprise to anyone, we have some tough financial decisions to make in the near future. We need to get memberships upto-date. We are planning to have an executive committee meeting at the State Show in July. More to follow... This summer promises to be another busy summer as usual. National Holstein Convention is coming up June 29th to July 3rd with all the junior activities as well as senior activities. Tours to Mackinac Island, farm tours, National Holstein Convention Sale will all be held at Traverse City, Michigan. Pat and I plan to attend the National Convention - we went to Mackinac Island on our honeymoon back in 1974 - a long time ago! Good luck to all of the exhibitors at the district shows. Then the State Championship Show is scheduled to be held in Bloomington July 18th to 20th. For Illinois not being a dairy state, we have always had a top quality show. I anticipate the same for this year. So even if you are not showing at the state show, please plan to attend and give your support to those exhibitors who do. Then the State Holstein Picnic will be right around the corner and I am pleased to announce the Dave Butler family will host our picnic this year at Arrowsmith on September 9th. I’m proud to announce that Pat and I are grandparents again! Ava Marie Smith was born June 2nd in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. This makes the fifth one for Chris and Lori. We now have 9 grandchildren - 3 in high school, 5 in grade school and 1 newborn. We are very blessed and thankful! Grandkids keep us young. Hello Illinois Holstein Enthusiasts! I hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for an awesome summer! I am excited to go to National Holstein Convention in Michigan this year and attend the summer shows that follow! At the State Show I will pass the baton off to a very lucky young woman to hold this honor of being the Illinois Holstein Dutchess. It is hard to believe that another year has gone by so fast! Writing this article gives me bittersweet feeling since it is my last Dutchess Domain. I have been extremely proud to represent our state, the wonderful dairy farmers in Illinois, and the Holstein cow that we all know and love. The experience I have had being the Illinois Holstein Dutchess, has given me more confidence and given me more opportunities to strike up conversations with more people in this industry. To all the young women that are hesitant to run for Dutchess, don’t hesitate to run! It is an amazing opportunity to build skills that are needed later on in life. Thank you, Illinois, for another great year!

Greetings Holstein Breeders, We hope you are having a great summer. We look forward to seeing you at the shows and wish you success. Hopefully summer weather is good for you. Holstein USA has had many activities in the past few months. Our spring board meeting was held March 22 & 23. Last year identifications were at an all-time high and it is our goal to improve those numbers for 2018. Several new programs have been initiated for this year. In February, HAUSA started classifying the Guernsey breed. In March, Tri-Star AMR was announced, which will provide pedigree production records for Lely Robot milking herds that do not get DHI records. Also initiated in March is Holstein Marketplace where members can advertise breeding stock and embryos for sale on the Holstein website. We are excited to provide these new opportunities for our members. We realize that the dairy industry is experiencing some tough times. Our legislative affairs committee established priorities to work on last winter. On the top of the list is the Dairy Pride Act which would stop “plant juice drinks” from calling themselves milk. The second initiative is to get 2% milk and 1% chocolate milk back in our schools for kids to drink. We think these objectives could help increase demand for milk and therefore help get supply/demand in balance. Other committees met this spring. The Genetics Advancement and Type Advisory committees met jointly in April. Their goal is to determine what traits will be important in the future for the Holstein cow. Our cow has improved greatly and we know that she will be the cow to make milk in the years ahead. The International Marketing committee met in May and it is their hope to make the most of opportunities to sell Holstein genetics around the world. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. Hello Illinois Holstein Association members! The 2018 Junior Holstein Association Spring Thing was held at the Embassy Suits in Peoria, Illinois. Juniors had the opportunity to compete in dairy quiz bowl, dairy jeopardy, speeches, and posters. This was also their chance at a shot in making the State quiz bowl team. This year’s National Holstein Convention will be held in Acme, Michigan. We hope to see you there! The members of the junior team are Delana Erbsen, Justin Irwin, Drew & Shana Lueking, and Addie Raber. The members of the senior team are Ellie Lenkaitis, Julia Mitchell, Morgan Olbrich, Rachel Skidmore and Lane Heinzmann. Along with Lila Sloan, Emma Carlson, and Brock Irwin competing in jeopardy. Justin Irwin, Shana Lueking, and Brock Irwin will be presenting a speech. Also, at this year’s spring thing we elected new Junior Holstein Association officers. President- Brock Irwin, Vice- President- Peyton Erbsen, Secretary- Lila Sloan, Treasurer- Jacob Raber, and ReporterBriley Lenkaitis. The 2018 State Championship Holstein show and Duchess Crowning will be held in Bloomington, Illinois at the Interstate Center, through the dates of July 18th through the 20th. __________________ OBITUARIES Lester Heinzmann
Lester C. Heinzmann, age 93 of Carlyle, passed away on Friday, April 13, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon. Mr. Heinzmann was born February 4, 1925 in Centralia, Illinois, a son of Henry and Nora (Roffmann) Heinzmann. He married Velda R. Skates on August 31, 1949, and she preceded in death on September 3, 1975. He married Mary Hintz on July 1, 1980, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Nelson Heinzmann and wife Bonnie of Carlyle, and Bradley Heinzmann and wife Kathleen of Breese; 6 grandchildren, Aaron Heinzmann and wife Jenn, Ethan Heinzmann and wife Brooke, Grant Heinzmann and wife Lynnsey, Stuart Heinzmann and wife Kaylee, Ryan Heinzmann and wife Emily, and Lindsay Brefeld and husband Chris. Also surviving are 15 great grandchildren, Lane, Brady, Samantha, Naomi, Nadia, Kyler, Rhyan, Kalan, Brooks, Clay, Olivia, Jacob and Claire Heinzmann, and Isabella and Luke Brefeld. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Velda, a step son, Terry Hintz, and 3 sisters, Henrietta Schmitz and husband Wilbert, Mildred Mainer and husband Cecil, and Lela Sanders and husband Charles. Mr. Heinzmann was a dairy farmer all his life. He was a registered Holstein breeder, a member and past president of the Clinton County Holstein Association, and a member and former board member of the Illinois Holstein Association. Lester was also a former East Fork Township supervisor and East Fork representative on the Clinton County Board. Mr. Heinzmann was a devoted fan of Carlyle High School sports and a member of the First Baptist Church in Carlyle. Lester recently retired from the Carlyle Walmart store, where he worked for over 20 years and he was proud of being one of the oldest employees in the Walmart system.

BOARD MEETING MINUTES June 1, 2018 - Gridley, IL
The Illinois Holstein Board of Directors met June 1, 2018 at the Flanagan State Bank in Gridley Illinois. The meeting was called to order at 1 p.m. by President Ed Smith with thirteen board members, three staff and one guest present. Secretary Sarah Lenkaitis called the roll of board members. Directors read and reviewed the typed minutes from the last meeting. Aaron Heinzmann moved to approve the minutes, Richard Meier seconded and the motion passed. Carol Jones gave the Treasurer’s report. Dale Drendel made a motion to approve the report, it was seconded by Jeff Thorman and the motion carried. Stephanie Hammerly gave the Editor’s report. The summer Illinois Holstein Herald will be the first issue in the new newsletter format and space reservations are due next week. The issue will go to print June 15. This issue will include a feature on YDJM finalist Nathan Erbsen, Spring Thing coverage, June board meeting minutes, highlights of Illinois placings from the Wisconsin Dairy Showcase, breeder ads, superior young dairy producer contest details, DJM/YDJM finalists and Illinois Holstein Dutchess contest rules. It was discussed and decided the full Illinois Championship Show rules do not need to be printed in the issue as they are included in the District Show boxes posted on the website. Also, space will be allocated to have breeder ads in the newsletter format. Stephanie asked board members to send any story idea for future issues or feedback received on the new newsletter format. For the Extension report, Aaron Heinzmann noted that Gene McCoy is receiving Hoard’s Dairyman Youth Development Award. The award is presented at World Dairy Expo. Boyd Schaufelberger gave the Holstein USA report. Boyd mentioned Holstein USA Field Representative, Tim Ewing was unable to attend today’s meeting due to recent health issues but is doing much better. Also, today is the deadline to transfer animals to junior ownership for showing. Boyd mentioned several upcoming events including the Missouri Holstein Association field day on July 24 and the National Holstein Convention in Michigan June 29-July 3. Holstein USA recently announced they are classifying Guernsey cows and launching a program for processing AMR records from Lely robotic milking units. Boyd reported Holstein USA recently held a judge’s conference (which included two Illinois attendees) and a type and genetic conference in Chicago (that included a stop at Golden Oaks Farm). He also mentioned DHIA might be asking its members to review and sign a data access agreement. Boyd discussed the importance of this information to breed associations and mentioned John Meyer included comments regarding it in the latest issue of the Holstein Pulse. Old Business - Kevin Wendling reported Bylaw Review Committee will present proposed changes to the board at the fall board meeting. Then, the membership will vote on the changes at the annual meeting. Page 6
New Business - Ed Smith reported the oneday format for the State Convention was wellreceived. Gateway will be hosting next year’s convention and Ron Schaufelberger is the chair. Ed Smith reported the Futures Sale held in conjunction with the State Convention made $900. There were several bids placed via Cowbuyer. The PDCA Calf Sale averaged $1,747 on the 25-head of Holstein calves sold. Junior members helped lead animals for sale, and Dave Fischer hosted a clinic for those interested in the Superior Young Producer contest. The Illinois Golden Opportunity Sale averaged $1,933. Board members reviewed a letter from sale co-chairmen Nate Janssen and Brian Wesemann detailing the remaining bills. Based on the Executive Committee recommendation and discussion among the Board of Directors, Aaron Heinzman made a motion to pay co-chairman Nate Janssen and Brian Wesemann .75% of the sale gross (or $1,002.04), pay Scott Courtney $1,000, pay each of the five sale crew (Larry Kleiner, Brian Olbrich, Gary Janssen, John Erbsen, Jason Oertel) $500 and reimburse Brian Wesemann $2,628.58 for his out of pocket expenses. Dave Shanks seconded the motion and the motion carried. Once paid, it will result in a loss for the sale of approximately $6,000. Sarah and Carol gave a brief update on membership applications collected as of June 1. There are currently 114 Junior members and 255 Senior members. These numbers are slightly down from June 1 of last year as we had already received membership forms for 170 Junior members and 375 Senior members. Stephanie is sending out a reminder to all unpaid members. Each Director is getting a list of unpaid members with phone numbers to encourage them to send in their membership renewal. Sarah reminded Directors that District Shows are a good time to cross-check exhibitors against the membership list in the show box and make sure exhibitors pay their dues before showing. Board members also reminded for a club to receive rebate money, the dues must be received by August 1. In their absence, Paula Bovre and Joe Engel sent a report with the details on the upcoming Illinois Championship Show. The show will be at the Interstate Center in Bloomington on Friday, July 20. Rules and entry forms are available on the website and included in the District Show boxes (distributed at the meeting). Entries are due by July 10 if you want to receive the $20/head fee; after that is $25/head. Paula reported show sponsorship is approximately the same amount as 2017 with roughly $5,900 committed to-date. Paula and Joe are looking for several more sponsors for class awards and volunteers for show week and show day. The Board of Directors and Illinois delegates for the upcoming National Holstein Convention discussed a letter received from the Minnesota Holstein Association regarding a resolution for a kick-back to respective states for each basic ID and registration fee collected by the National Holstein and the list of candidates for the
National Holstein Association Board. Secretary Sarah Lenkaitis read a thank you note received from the Lester Heinzmann Family. Ed Smith is finalizing the location and date for this year’s picnic. Ed proposed holding the next Board of Directors meeting at the picnic (tentatively September 8). Tricia Zehr gave a report for the Junior Association. They are busy preparing for the upcoming National Holstein Convention. Attendees are registered, and the advisors and dairy bowl coaches are finalizing travel arrangements. Tricia mentioned Al Lenkaitis, Jr. will be the on-site junior advisor at the Illinois Championship Show. Jared Dickman is the junior show chair. Nathan Erbsen Selected as 2018 National Young Distinguished Junior Member Finalist My love of cows started before I was even able to walk! Dad would take me with him every morning and night to do chores at our family’s Erbacres Holsteins. My assistance may not have been that helpful in the beginning, but the time I spent watching and learning during those early years has led me to my place today on our dairy farm. My grandmother would give directions, and I would follow the lead of my dad and uncles. This type of handson training required me to be on my toes and observant each day. My parents, Carl and Becky, are both teachers, but my father still assists with the family farm. My younger brother, Nevin, and I also spend time helping with the chores for 50 milk cows and working the 720 acres of cropland. Our family farm, Erbacres Holsteins, is managed by my grandmother, Pauline, and Uncles Kevin and John. Kevin has taken on the day to day care of the milking cows and shares the land responsibilities with John. I have three other cousins that also help on the farm. On the farm, I help feed, milk, and do any other daily chores that need to be done. I help my Uncle Kevin with the milking as well as cleaning and bedding the tie stall barn. I work with my Uncle John to complete field work and repairs that need to be attended to. The list of jobs on all farms is endless, and this is certainly true at Erbacres! It is my responsibility every morning and night to feed the bred heifers and breeding age heifers that are housed on the farm where my grandmother resides. In addition to feeding hay and mixing the haylage and corn silage for them, I watch for heats and anything out of the ordinary that may indicate a problem. I am also responsible for keeping their shed clean and bedded. When needed, I also help at my Uncle John’s farm, Erbacres II. I often help him with feeding, cleaning and bedding pens and health work like vaccinating. I am in charge of the feeding and milking chores for him when he is gone with his job. All of this has taught a lot about responsibility and I have developed a strong work ethic because I know my family is counting on me. My uncle John is a principal owner of the World Dairy Expo Champion, KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96 3E DOM. Thus, he houses many of the offspring at his farm, Erbacres II. Many of these cattle are headed to sales on a regular basis and John wants them to be clipped regularly. With his guidance and instruction, I have learned how to clip. I regularly help him and my cousin, Connor, when clipping the Apple Partners cattle or preparing our Erbacres show string for county, district and state shows. I also help with body clipping all the cows in our herd for classification every 7 months. Fine clipping all the udders is a task that is assigned to Illinois Holstein Herald
me too! Fitting and clipping is something I really enjoy and keep working to improve. This past summer my clipping abilities led to several jobs assisting other breeders with classification and county fair preparations. I was asked by Hi-View-Corners and Graybill Farms to clip their herds for classification. I clipped cattle at Graybills and Wingert farms for their county fair and then clipped and cared for the Meier Meadows show string at the 2016 and 2017 Stephenson County Fair. This has allowed me to make many new friends, see other dairy operations and helped me improve my clipping skills and ability to deal with all types and breeds of cattle. I used some of my earnings to expand my fitting equipment inventory so that I’m prepared for future work! My time helping Meier Meadows at the county fair has led to part-time employment year round at their farm. They recently built a new free stall barn/milking parlor to house their 700+ Holsteins. My responsibilities at their farm are maintaining animal facilities, upkeep on equipment, assist with medical needs, and feeding the herd. I continue to learn more about this large dairy operation every time I work there. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Uncle John often provides some of my cousins and I with heifers to show if we have not been lucky enough to get heifer calves from the cows we own. Showing is a team effort between my cousins, uncles, and myself. You will usually find us with a string of at least 15 head of Registered Holsteins at our district and state shows. John gave me the opportunity to show a winter calf, Erbacres Atwood DivinityET in 2011. Divinity usually placed in the middle of the class as a calf and yearling, but once this big, white Atwood put on an udder, it was her time to shine! At the 2013 Illinois Championship Junior Holstein Show, I had the thrill of a lifetime when Divinity was named Grand Champion! In 2015 she came back and claimed Reserve Grand. Again in 2017 at the Midwest Spring National Holstein Show, Divinity was named Reserve Senior & Reserve Grand Champion, Junior Show. Winning with Divinity has taught me that hard work, perseverance, and patience do pay off. My cousins and I take a string of 12 to 15 head to our county fair each year. For this show, ALL the clipping and preparation is in our hands. We work together to get the clipping done at home, then at the show Connor, Payton and I go over them again. On show days, the three of us are busy early in the morning blowing up and setting toplines. It takes all of us to have our animals ready for the show ring. My time practicing in the show ring at the county fair level led me to be selected to represent my FFA Chapter at the Illinois State
FFA Dairy Judging Contest as a Dairy Handler. I was thrilled to place 2nd in this state contest. Being involved in Junior Holstein activities has allowed me to make many new friends and memories that will last a lifetime. But, more importantly, I have learned more about the industry by participating in dairy bowl and dairy jeopardy. In 2015, I was an Illinois junior dairy jeopardy representative for the National Convention in St. Charles, IL. Attending National Convention was an awesome experience with the farm tours, the sale, and all the junior events. I hope to attend more National Conventions in the future. Participating in jeopardy and dairy bowl at the Illinois Junior Holstein spring thing is always competitive yet fun. In 2016, I was a member of the second-place Junior Dairy Bowl team. Junior Holstein activities have also helped me develop leadership skills. At the 2016 Illinois State Show I was co-chairman for the Illinois Junior Holstein railbird judging contest. It was a great learning experience working to convince spectators to participate and then scoring the cards. I also enjoyed participating in our Illinois Junior Holstein work auction at state show in 2016 and 2017. We have lots of fun with the event and I have been one of the high sellers each year! I know that working on our family farm, side by side, with several family members has taught me to be a team player. I take responsibility seriously! Other dairymen have noticed my strong work ethic when at the shows and fairs. This has led to jobs at fellow breeder’s farms as a relief milker, helping with general farm chores or with crop production. I enjoy helping others and learning different ways that people manage their farm operations. It opens my eyes to new things and expands my horizons. I love agriculture. Working the land to provide feed for our cattle as well as the world population is very gratifying. Caring for our Registered Holsteins has given me a great appreciation for paying attention to details. If you give your cattle respect and do a good job caring for them, they will return that respect and perform at high levels. The agricultural field, and the dairy industry in particular, continues to grow and evolve into an exciting environment. I am excited to expand my knowledge in all areas and find my place in it. We will continue to work to improve our family business as a team, and I intend to do my part to make my family proud. As the fourth generations at our farm, I’m hopeful that we can find a way for my cousins and I to carry on our strong farming heritage at Erbacres. Page 7
Junior Spring Thing Meeting Minutes - February 25, 2018 The meeting was called to order by President Connor Erbsen. Secretary’s Report: Lane Heinzmann read the minutes from the July 19, 2018 meeting. Addie Raber motioned to approve the minutes as read. Jared Dickman seconded. Treasurer’s report from Lila Sloan. We have $23,260.74. Motion to approve the treasurer’s report as read by Brock Irwin; seconded by Nathan Erbsen. Reporter Brock Irwin announced that the paper scrapbook won 1st place at National Convention and the digital scrapbook won 5th place. The senior Dairy Bowl team also won their contest. Old Business - Emily Sheehan gave a Spring Thing report. There were 62 juniors and 38 adults present.Riley Zettle talked about national convention. He talked about how they got the opportunity to go up in the space needle and go to the dance. Brady, Delana, Lila, and Shana were on the junior team. Riley, Brock, ordan, and Charlie were on the senior team and won in their division. Payton Erbsen talked about the state show. Perry Phend is the judge. There is also a new rule in affect. The rule is that there are no adults allowed in the ring. If the junior requires assistance it must be approved by the show chairman. New Business - We discussed that national convention would be in Traverse City, Michigan this year and would be $300 to attend. State show will be judged by Norm Nabholz. We will also have a meeting during state fair on July 18. The spring thing committee for the 2019 spring thing will be Payton Erbsen, Delana Erbsen, Lila Sloan, and Briley Lenkaitis. We had officer elections at spring thing and used Kahoot to cast our votes. Brock Irwin was nominated for president. Morgan Olbrich made a motion to close nominations. Dylan Housingay seconded the motion. Morgan Olbrich then made a motion to white ballot the election. Jared Dickman seconded the motion. Brock Irwin was elected the president. Onto the vice president elections. Jared Dickman was nominated for vice president. Emily Sheehan made a motion to close nominations. Julie Mitchell seconded. 4-H Superior Young Dairy Producer Contest August 18, 2018 - Springfield, IL
This is a great opportunity to win a $1,000.00 scholarship and have fun doing it at the Illinois State Fair. Eligibility: MUST be a current Illinois 4-H member and MUST be currently enrolled in a dairy project in their local 4-H club and MUST be 14 years or older, as of January 1, 2018, to be eligible to participate in the 2018 Illinois State Fair Superior Young Dairy Producer Award program. Remember, you do not need to be a State Fair Junior dairy exhibitor to participate. Awards: The top 3 youth with the highest point scores in the total contest will receive a $1,000.00 scholarship and plaque. A plaque will also be presented to each of the “top three” phase winners in the individual phase competitions. All participants will be recognized and the overall winners will be announced on Saturday afternoon, August 18th, following the contest. Contest Format: The contest will be held at the Illinois State Fair in the Livestock Center on August 18th, with registration from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. 8:40 a.m. - Phase 1 - Management Test: A 25 question written test relating to any aspects of dairy management and related facts. Study resources include 4-H dairy project manuals and the dairy portions of Livestock E-Quiz (both dairy levels) located on the web site at: http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/equiz/. 9:00 a.m. - Phase 2 - Skillathon: This will involve a series of three learning stations with specific tasks and questions for participants to answer, such as “identifying dairy feeds”, “identifying dairy equipment”, and “herd health” or “dairy management”. 10:00 a.m. - Phase 3 - Dairy Judging: 6 classes will be placed by the participants. Oral reasons are not part of this contest. This program is coordinated and conducted by Dave Fischer, U of I Extension Dairy Educator-Retired. State 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, August 18, 2018 - Springfield, IL
The Illinois 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 in the Livestock Center at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Illinois. This is the State 4-H Dairy Contest and any 4-H member is welcome to participate. All contestants must be current 4-H members. Contestants are not required to be enrolled in a dairy project. Contestant registration is to be made on the day of the contest at the State Fair. Registration will be from 9:00 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. in the Livestock Center (open show ring) on the IL State Fairgrounds. The contest will begin at 10:00 a.m. on August 18, 2018. There will be six (6) classes of cows and heifers selected from various dairy breeds at the Illinois State Fair. All 4-H contestants will be scored as a Junior Division (13 years of age and younger as of January 1, 2018) or Senior Division (14 years and older as of January 1, 2018) participant. All participants will be invited to present oral reasons following the contest but it is not mandatory. Contestants in the Junior Division will be encouraged and offered the opportunity to give one set of written or oral reasons on a cow class. The Junior contestants can read or recite from memory their reasons. HOWEVER, contestants in the Senior Division who will be considered for selection to the State 4-H Team will be required to give two sets of oral reasons on cow classes. The state 4-H dairy cattle judging team will be selected from participants in this contest. To be eligible for selection, members must have been 14 years of age and not older than 18 years of age as of January 1, 2018. The selected 2018 Illinois 4-H Dairy Judging Team will participate at the National Contest in Madison, Wisconsin on October 1, 2018. Page 8
