BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Zehrview Holsteins, Graymont
The word “recognition” has a variety of definitions, but the one that is most fitting to the Zehr family of Graymont, Illinois is: “the acknowledgment of achievement, service and merit.” All three generations of Zehrview Holsteins received a great deal of recognition recently and we would like to say congratulations on these well deserved awards! Zehrview Holsteins is located near Graymont, Illinois and is truly a family farm. Don & Shirley have shared their love of the Holstein cow with their children and grandchildren. Their grand-children, Rosalee and Wyatt (Gary & Tricia’s children), have had much success in the show ring this year as they attended various shows including Illinois State Fair, World Dairy Expo and the Grand National Junior Holstein Show & Mid-East Fall National Holstein Show in Louisville. After a great year of showing in 2014, Rosalee and Wyatt had an even better year in 2015! Their Summer Yearling heifer, Zehrview Lassiter Delighted was named Junior Champion of the Illinois State Fair Junior Show and she went on to place 1st in the Open Show. The fun certainly didn’t stop there...of course she had to make the trip to Madison! There, she was recognized as the 1st place Bred & Owned in the International Junior Holstein Show, 7th in her class and placed 6th later that week in the International Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo. Congratulations on your success with this bred & owned heifer! What a great achievement for so young in your Junior Holstein show career! Another highlight this year was Rock Home Goldwyn Allana, a 4-yearold who was named Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand Champion of the Illinois State Fair. At the Illinois Holstein Association Senior Convention held in early December, Lynn & Gary were recognized as the Outstanding Illinois Senior Holstein Breeders. Read more about their award on page 18. That same week, Don received a very special recognition! Below is the press release that shares the details: The 2016 Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock Breeders’ Association Hall of Fame recipient is Donald L. Zehr of Graymont, Illinois. Don is recognized for his outstanding accomplishments in the purebred Holstein dairy cattle industry. The farm, Zehrview Holsteins, has been associated with high quality purebred dairy cattle for nearly 60 years. Don, along with his family, have been very Illinois Holstein Herald

successful in breeding, developing and exhibiting numerous champions and class winners at local county fairs, Illinois State Fair, World Dairy Expo and the North American International Livestock Exposition. One of the great cows in the Holstein breed, Zehrview Arlinda Polly, was bred and developed by Don Zehr. Polly was classified Excellent 96 points and was the Illinois State Fair Supreme Champion Land of Lincoln in 1972 and 1973. Furthermore, Zehrview Arlinda Polly is one of the very few Illinois bred and owned elite cows to have ever been scored 96 points. In addition to registered Holsteins, Don has also been involved with breeding purebred Hampshire hogs and registered Belgian horses. Don and his wife Shirley were married in 1950 and began farming on the family farm near Graymont, Illinois. The Zehrview farm and Holstein herd is currently owned and managed by their two sons and consists of 750 acres and over 200 head of registered Holstein dairy cattle. In addition to their sons Lynn and Gary, Don and Shirley have 3 daughters, Carol, Lori and Jan. Don has served in various leadership roles throughout his career. He is active in the Illinois Holstein Association and was past board member and chairman of several committees. He also served on the state board of directors of the Illinois Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Don will have his picture permanently displayed on the Land of Lincoln Purebred Livestock
Breeders’ Association Hall of Fame in the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Congratulations to Don Zehr!

We would like to thank the Illinois Holstein Association for giving the winning Jr. & Sr. Dairy Bowl teams jackets and for taking time out of the state sale to present them. I wish to thank the Illinois Holstein Association for awarding the Distinguished Service Award to the National Convention Chairs. I appreciate the special embroidered blanket. Glad to be a part of the 2015 National Holstein Convention planning group. I’m looking forward to serving the Association in the future. Transportation Co-Chair On behalf of my brother and myself, we would like to the Illinois Holstein Association for presenting us with the 2015 Outstanding Senior Breeder Award. This award means more to us since it was given in honor of Robert Butler. Bob dedicated his life to his family and to the Holstein cow. Bob was highly respected and a successful breeder. His intelligence, integrity and his tireless effort to do any job gained him the respect of all his fellow breeders. To receive this award on the same day he passed away one year ago (Dec. 2) is a memory that will stay with us the rest of our lives. Bob was a great friend to our family and is very much missed. FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Illinois H o l s t e i n Association, Winter time is upon us already, well according to the calendar. So this means that we have just finished with our state convention and annual meeting. The Heart of Illinois club should be commended on doing great job of hosting the state convention. All that attended were treated with open arms and a great program. The facilities were very nice and the fellowship that this group allowed and provided was very well appreciated from everyone. A few months ago we had our state sale, Jason Swanson did a great job of putting together a very fancy and deep pedigreed group of cattle. Although it was a smaller group in number of cattle I believe it turned out very well considering the milk price and cull cattle market had fallen as well. As I pondered on what to say or write as my final presidential message, I couldn’t help but think back to the time when I attended my first board meeting. Our association has been very fortunate to have such a deep history of great people that have been in this leadership role. The past presidents have built this association to be a very strong one that has allowed our
membership to flourish in many different aspects. All of these influential people have helped mold how our association conducts it’s business. During my tenure of serving this fine association as either Vice-President or President I have felt very fortunate to be able to try and keep up to the high standards others before me have set. I am not sure that I fit into that category very well, I feel that I just happened to be in the right place at the right time! During this time period our organization has seen many changes and one thing that I have learned is that change is inevitable! Change is not always popular, but sometimes it is better in the long run. I have been very fortunate the past two years to have a great support team to get me to this point. First and foremost, THANK YOU to my family for taking care of things at home and on the farm while I attended the numerous meetings! Secondly, thank you to the executive committee, this group of people are always looking out for the best interests of our organization. Moving forward, our association is in great hands with Jason Oertel as President and Ed Smith as Vice-President. We are lucky to have their knowledge and wisdom guiding us for the next few years! I have been blessed and honored to serve as President of YOUR association. I look forward to seeing many of you at the committee meetings in January. Thanks again for this tremendous opportunity! I wish each and every one of you a merry Christmas!

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Hello Illinois! I hope you all are doing well as the cold begins to set in and the days get shorter. I had a great time at the Illini Golden Opportunity Sale at the end of October passing slips and watching the beautiful animals go through the ring. Another really fun thing that I have been working on is preparing the 2016 Spring Thing. As many of you know we have decided to move hotels this year and I am happy to announce that Spring Thing will be hosted at the Parke Regency Hotel in Bloomington, IL on February 27-28, 2016. Mark your calendars now. They are very excited to have us this year and I am really excited for this change. There is a registration form available in this edition of the Holstein Herald (page 21) that you are able to use to register and it will have the updated information on it as well. DISTRICT NEWS CLINTON Maybe you have heard of Christmas in July, well this article will start out being about July at Christmas. Our Junior Club had a judging contest and pizza party on the night of July 12, after our open show. Officers were also elected and include: President - Lane Heinzmann, Vice President - Taylor Huels, Reporter - Shana Lueking (so I am new at this!), Treasurer Brendon Richter and State Direction - Kaylie Huels. The Junior Show was held on the following day at the Clinton County Fairgrounds. TRI-COUNTY MISSISSIPPI VALLEY Greetings from Mississippi Valley Holstein Club! We recently gathered for our annual Winter meeting and club award recognitions hosted at the Fowler Church. We had many members in attendance and a great meal was served by Kathy Neisen (We always have GREAT food). The MVHC supported local food pantries with the donation of 1,100 lbs of cheese. Thanks to those who assisted with the deliveries. Congratulations to the Thorman’s as Fancy placed First at the Southeastern National Jr. Show in Louisville. They have had a GREAT year. Club Award Recognitions went to the following: Senior Boy - Taylor Nuehaus, Junior Boy - Zack McCloud, Senior Girl - Hanna Weiman and Junior Girl - McKenna Huls. All received Wal-Mart gift cards. The following also were recognized and awarded plaques: Premier Breeder - Senteka Holsteins, Premier Exhibitor - Schluter Farm and Senteka Holsteins and Junior Production Exhibitor - Zack McCloud. Tri-County held its annual meeting on November 29th with 23 members present. Family news includes: Morgan Bollech, former Holstein Dutchess, attends a Rockford pharmacy school with a rural health emphasis. Kaitlyn Johnsen and her dad Todd took three young dairy animals to the Autumn Festival at Peck’s Farm in Geneva; they gave the many visitors a chance to interact with the animals and provided information about the dairy industry and dairy foods. Rick Koehn, now home from college, will marry his high school sweetheart in September 2017. Albert and Rhonda Lenkaitis bought a 100acre farm in Saline county in southern Illinois next to Rhonda’s folks. Their oldest daughter, Briley still has show animals and has joined the Clinton County club. Andy and Sarah Lenkaitis have returned to the home farm in St. Charles as of Spring 2015. With their new prefix, Andara, Andy and Sarah have plans to expand their operation mainly with Red and White Holsteins. They look forward to the future with robotic milkers and new barns. KASKASKIA DAIRY JUDGING TEAM RESULTS The Kaskaskia College Dairy Judging Team finished 2nd at the International Postsecondary Dairy Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. The KC Team was made up of students Emily Irwin (Belvidere), Macy Wendling (Altamont), Macy Probst (Newton) and Ashten Smithson (St. Elmo). The team finished 2nd Overall in the contest. All four KC students were named All-Americans (highest honor given to collegiate dairy judges) – Macy Probst 10th, Ashten Smithson – 9th, Macy Wendling – 8th, Emily Irwin – 6th. This earns the students the invitation to judge at the Scottish Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland and the Luxembourg National Show in Luxembourg in June 2016! They will be visiting farms in Scotland, England, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany. This trip is a great experience and they’re Page 8
currently selling raffle tickets to raise funds. Tickets are $100 each with only 200 sold. The winner will receive $10,000 (1/2 the pot). The drawing will be held March 22nd at their Ag Club Banquet and may be purchased from any of the team members. Other contest results include: 1st Overall at the All-American Dairy Show and 2nd Overall at NAILE with high placing individual scores and placing high in each respective breed. U OF I DAIRY JUDGING TEAM RESULTS
Erik Sheppelman (Bloomington), Chelsea Jean (Cissna Park), and Jacob Meisner (Piasa) were members of the 2015 University of Illinois Dairy Cattle Judging Team. Sheppelman, Jean, and Meisner participated in the All-American Dairy Judging contest in Harrisburg, PA on September 14th. With 15 teams participating, the team was 14th overall and 14th in reasons. The team placed 9th in Brown Swiss and 11th in Guernseys. Individually Jean was 13th in Brown Swiss. At the 2015 National Collegiate Dairy Judging Contest at World Dairy Expo in Madison WI, team members Eric Sheppelman, Chelsea Jean, and Jacob Meisner were 14th overall out of 17 teams. The team was 3rd in Holsteins. Individually Jacob was 2nd in Holsteins and Chelsea was 24th in overall placings. The University of Illinois Dairy judging
team composed of Sheppelman, Jean, and Meisner judged at the North American International Livestock Dairy Judging contest held in Louisville, KY on November 8th. The team placed 15th, and 11th in reasons out of 17 teams. The team was 10th and 11th in Ayrshires and Brown Swiss, respectively. Erik was 12th in Brown Swiss. The University of Illinois judging team composed of 10 students judged the Hoard’s Dairyman cow judging contest in the spring of 2015 and placed 4th out of 62 teams. Team members Dylan Reed and Brett Woker were honorable mentioned in the senior division out of 18,400 contestants. The team members and Coaches McCoy and Miller would like to thank all the breeders that allowed the team to visit their farms for practice sessions throughout the fall.

competition. Wingert and Ruhl both received the All-American plaque which is presented to the “top 25” judges. Sadie Ropp placed 12th high individual in the Ayrshire breed. On a “top 10” team basis by breed, Illinois placed 6th in Jerseys, 8th in Ayrshires, 8th in Holsteins, and 9th in Brown Swiss. The Illinois 4-H team was sponsored by the Illinois 4-H Foundation, River Valley Dairy of Tremont, and Illinois Milk Producers’ Association. In addition, the team jackets were sponsored by Effingham Equity, Effingham, Illinois. The team was coached by Dave Fischer, University of Illinois Extension 4-H Dairy Program Coordinator.
NATIONAL 4-H DAIRY QUIZ BOWL CONTEST
The Illinois 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team was a very strong and well balanced team as they received “Honorable Mention” by placing 5th at the 2015 National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest. The competition was held in Louisville, Kentucky on November 6th and 7th. Sixteen states were represented from across the country as they battled through a double-elimination contest. Illinois team members included: Brock Irwin, Belvidere; Bria Koester, Dakota; Elizabeth Koester, Red Bud; and Julia Mitchell of Winnebago, IL. The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl has become a premier educational 4-H event as it challenges the contestants’ dairy knowledge in various areas including; dairy production, business management, dairy products and dairy science. The contest includes a 50-question test and then Page 9
The 2015 National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, was another memorable event for Illinois 4-H’ers. The Illinois 4-H dairy judging team placed 7th high team overall in a very strong contest among 26 state teams. Illinois team members included: Sadie Ropp, Strawn; Amanda Ruhl, Abingdon; T.J. Wingert, Kent; and Riley Zettle, Rock City, IL. T. J. Wingert won top individual in the total placings score, out of 102 contestants, with an average score of 48 points out of 50 on ten judging classes. T.J. also placed 8th high individual overall. Amanda Ruhl placed 12th high individual in total placings score averaging 45.9 points on the 10 classes and placed 25th high individual overall. In addition, Amanda won 5th place high individual in the Jersey breed
competing with other teams in individual rounds consisting of 5 team questions and 20 toss-up questions. Bonus questions are given to teams that have correct answers from multiple team members in any given round. Illinois excelled in bonus questions throughout the contest because of the balance of knowledge displayed by all four team members. FROM THE NATIONAL BOARD_____________ The Holstein Association USA, Inc. (HAUSA) board of directors conducted its fall meeting November 17-18 in Fresno, California. President Gordie Cook of Hadley, Massachusetts, chaired the one-and-a-half day session. The board approved the 2016 Managementby-Objective Business Plan and associated budget, as presented by management. The Business Plan forecasts growth of Holstein Association USA’s core products and services, including registrations, transfers and Holstein COMPLETE® participation. Update on 2015 Business Plan Registrations through October totaled 309,422, which represents a one percent increase, or 3,607 animals, over 2014 yearto-date totals. Members are looking for opportunities to build their herd with registered cows and take advantage of having Registered Holsteins®. As of October 31st, 311,064 cows in 1,825 herds were enrolled in Holstein COMPLETE®. This represents an increase of 21,790 cows, or 7.5 percent, compared to the same time last year. Bill VerBoort, AgriTech Analytics general manager, reported 982,862 cows in 605 herds

This represents an increase of 3.5 percent, or 38,901 cows, and an increase of 3.4 percent, or 20 herds, when compared to the same time last year. 2016 Business Plan As part of the 2016 Management-byObjective Business Plan, the board heard a proposal to start a four-year project to restructure and retool the Holstein Association information technology environment. The current IT systems and software at Holstein USA are in need of replacement/update to gain operational efficiencies and to help Holstein continue providing the best service possible to its members. The board approved allocating $2,911,000 from the reserve fund for this multi-year IT
project. The money is being made available as a result of the 2014 Holstein Association USA Board of Directors decision to provide, “up to 5% annually from the reserve fund toward the betterment of the Holstein Association.” Other Business The board approved the release of 2,207 prefixes, effective December 31, 2015. Since its inception in 2009, the board policy allows the release for reuse of a prefix after 20 years of non-use and makes it easier for members to acquire prefixes for their herds. The list has been posted on the Holstein Association’s website to give notice to membership. If someone wants to retire his or her prefix prior to the release date, they may request to do so for a $100 fee. BOARD MEETING MINUTES October 23, 2015 � Belvidere, IL The October 23rd meeting of the Illinois Holstein Board of Directors was called to order at 4:45 p.m. at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Belvidere, Illinois. Eleven members of the board were present along with three staff. Secretary Tina Yagow called roll and handed out copies of the minutes from the May meeting. Ray Hess moved to accept the minutes as printed and the motion was seconded by Harvey Harpstrite. The motion passed. Treasurer Carol Jones handed out copies of the budget by class and also Club Rebates moneys. The Juniors bank account is over $17,000 and National Convention is just over $60,000. Steve Irwin moved to approve the Treasurers Report and John Mitchell seconded, motion passed. Dale Drendel informed the group that Holstein USA is involved in a Steer Project as an effort to let consumers know where their beef comes from. Registrations are up but transfers and classifications are down. Some classifiers have retired and staff members have shifted roles, but that is normal. Illinois received favorable feedback from Holstein USA staff and participants regarding our hosting National Convention 2015. National Convention Chairmen Dale Drendel and Ron Schaufelberger thank everyone
for helping to make it a successful Convention. Thanks to amazing sponsors, we were able to breakeven and pay back the amount borrowed from the IHA savings. Some consignors at the National Convention Sale have not been paid yet, so consignors need to contact to the sale management firm Burton Consulting LLC. Comments about the 2015 State Show were that it was excellent. No sponsors were sought due to National Convention, but the cost was still kept around only $4,000. 2015 State Convention will be December 1-3, Bloomington with the annual meeting and Board of Directors meeting Thursday, December 3. The 2015 Futures Sale will be December 2 by Chairman Larry Kleiner. Direction for IHA Juniors - The President and Vice President will nominate 3 advisors to serve on an advisory board with the Juniors officer team just as they select the other Committee Chairmen. The advisors would serve on a 3-year rotation. The 2015 State Sale will feature 31 head and the chairman is Jason Swanson. President Brian Olbrich asked for nominations for Junior Breeder, Senior Breeder and Service Awards as soon as possible. Editor Stephanie Stout presented the group

BOARD MEETING MINUTES December 3, 2015 � Bloomington, IL The December 3, 2015 meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association Board of Directors was called to order at 11 a.m. by President Brian Olbrich. Sixteen Directors were present along with 3 staff members. Secretary Tina Yagow called the roll and asked members to review the minutes of the October meeting. Boyd Schaufelberger moved to approve the minutes as printed. Kevin Wendling seconded the motion and it carried. Treasurer Carol Jones presented a printed report of the budget by class and announced one change to the printed report which had one lot from the State Sale in the State Show class. The State Sale cost the Association $1,401.65. A full audit will be done after March 31st for the current fiscal year. Jason Oertel moved to approve the Treasurer’s report as corrected, seconded by Herb Schmiedeskamp. The motion passed. OLD BUSINESS Committee Reports - Membership: For the 2015-16 year, the Association has 458 Senior members and 223 Junior members. The Senior membership is down by 50 members from last year. Membership income was just over $19,000. PDCA: The 2015 PDCA Calf Sale averaged $2,029 for 29 head of Holsteins. The date for the 2016 sale is April 9th so they are starting to look for 25-30 Holstein calves. Marc Hilgendorf has stepped down as Holstein Chairman so they are searching for someone to take that responsibility. State Show: The 2015 Illinois Championship Show, chaired by Paula Bovre and Joe Engel, was held July 17th at the Logan County fairgrounds, Lincoln. 146 entries were in the Open Show and 88 in the Junior Show. Pat Conroy served as judge at one of the finest quality Open shows ever! Ms Dundee Belinda was named Grand Champion for Jeff Butler while Team Durham Morgan from Team Holsteins claimed Reserve Grand Champion honors. All class and champion awards were sponsored. Due to the 2015 Illinois National Holstein Convention, very few other sponsors were solicited. The cost to the Association for State Show 2015 was $4,300. Dutchess/Little Miss: The 2015-16 Dutchess is Bailey Hart of Belvidere, the alternate is Katie Carlson of Kirkland and the Little Miss Holstein is Samantha Heinzmann of Carlyle. The cost to the Association for the Dutchess/Little Miss competition was $550. State Sale: The 2015 State Sale was chaired by Jason Swanson and held in Belvidere, Illinois. Thirty-one head were sold at an average of $2,537. The cost to the Association for the State Illinois Holstein Herald
Sale was $1,400. The 2015 Futures Sale, chaired by Larry Kleiner was held December 2nd at the State Convention in Bloomington with an average of $2,332 on 17 lots. Executive Committee: Report by President Brian Olbrich. The National Convention went very well, making a good impression on attendees from all over the country and raising about $74,000. The plan for that money is to save it in a money market account and create an Advisory Committee to figure out how to handle it going forward. The State Show will move back to Bloomington in 2016, which is exciting to get a signed contract with the Interstate Center again at a reasonable price. The Executive Committee is working with Editor Stephanie Stout to get the website back up-to-date. The Association has received notice that some consignors at the National Convention Sale have not been paid and we recommend those consignors contact the sale management firm Burton Consulting LLC. The Executive Committee is providing direction for the Junior Association by creating an Advisory Committee which will have 3 adult advisors serving rotating 3-year terms alongside the Junior officer team. Boyd Schaufelberger moved, and Jerry Smith seconded, that the committee reports be accepted and the motion carried. NEW BUSINESS Jerry Smith nominated Jason Oertel for President of the Illinois Holstein Association. Kevin Wendling moved to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot which was seconded by Dale Drendel and the motion carried. Jerry Smith nominated Ed Smith for VicePresident of the Illinois Holstein Association. Kevin Wendling moved to close nominations and cast a unanimous ballot which was seconded by Brian Olbrich and the motion carried. Nominations for Executive Committee included Steve Irwin, Aaron Heinzmann, Jerry Smith and Rodger Koehn. A motion to close nominations was made by Brian Olbrich, seconded by Herb Schmiedeskamp and the motion carried. Ray Hess moved to accept that slate of nominees which was seconded by Ethan Heinzmann and the motion passed. President Jason Oertel asked for a club to volunteer to host the 2016 State Convention but no one volunteered so he will start contacting clubs directly. The 2016 Committee Meetings will be January 8th with a Board meeting in the afternoon. President Jason Oertel will be searching for members for the Financial Advisory Committee (3-5 people) and a By-laws change committee.
We received a Thank You letter for our sponsorship of the World Dairy Expo which was read to the group. The Kaskaskia College Judging Team will be representing the United States in Europe again in the summer of 2016 and in the past we have donated to help sponsor them. Herb Schmiedeskamp moved we sponsor them with a $1,000 donation which was seconded by Steve Irwin. Herb then moved to amend the donation amount to $2,000 which Toby Probst seconded but the amendment failed. The original motion for $1,000 passed. ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES December 3, 2015 � Bloomington, IL The 2015 Annual Meeting of the Illinois Holstein Association was called to order at the Parke Regency Conference Center, Bloomington, December 3rd at 9:15 a.m. by President Brian Olbrich. Thirty-seven members, 3 staff and three special guests were present. Secretary Tina Yagow asked members to review the printed minutes of the 2014 Annual Meeting meeting. Boyd Schaufelberger moved that the minutes be approved as printed, Jerry Smith seconded the motion and it carried. Treasurer Carol Jones presented the FY 2014-15 Budget by class. The profit and loss statement for FY2014-15 shows a loss of $22,092.04 due to lending $25,000 seed money to the National Convention checking account but it has been paid back in FY2015-16. Dale Drendel moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report as printed and Ed Smith seconded; motion passed. The Holstein USA Report was given by Regional Representative Dale Drendel and National Vice-President Boyd Schaufelberger. Dale informed the group national classifications are down, as usually occurs when milk prices are down, but there is an increase in the herds enrolled in Complete. The 2016 business plan that has been approved will change the IT program over the next 4 years and in the long run it should make things run smoother…it should save paper and time for the Holstein USA staff and help get more accurate information to members. The money for the IT project is coming from the reserve fund, which has released 5% of its reserves to do special projects to benefit the members. Boyd said there will be an increase in the price of membership, transfers and registrations for the first time in 10-12 years but if you are on Complete, the prices will NOT change. After classification, each herd will get a new report sent to them, a sample of which was passed around for members to see. The University of Illinois Extension Report was given by David Fischer and Gene McCoy. Dave reported on the State Fair Superior Young Producer Awards and 4-H Teams (judging and dairy bowl) and announced the dates for the IMPA Dairy Summits January 19-22. Gene had 3 individuals on the U of I Dairy Judging Team and they went to 3 contests this fall. OLD BUSINESS Committee Reports - Membership: For the 2014-15 year, the Association had about 510 Senior members and 230 Junior members. Net income for membership was just over $20,000. PDCA: The 2014 PDCA Calf Sale featured 33 head of Holsteins, averaging $1,562. State Show: The 2014 State Show was chaired by Brian Wesemann and Nate Janssen in Lincoln, Illinois. 157 head were exhibited in the Open Show and 76 in the Junior Show. Dutchess/Little Miss: The 2014-15 Dutchess was Emily Irwin and Little Miss Holstein was Ashtyn Martin. The expense for the contest for the Fiscal Year was around $700.

State Sale: The 2014 State Sale, chaired by Kevin Wendling and held in Altamont, grossed $284,000 with a sale average of $3,555 and our profit is approximately $13,000. Public Relations: Editor Julie Ashton ended her tenure with the Association during the 2014-15 year and Stephanie Stout was hired to replace her in the position of Editor. The expenses within the Public Relations activities cost the Association about $10,000. A motion to approve the committee reports was made by Joann Hartman, seconded by Herb Schmiedeskamp and the motion carried. NEW BUSINESS National Convention 2015 re-cap by Chairmen Ron Schaufelberger and Dale Drendel. There were 1,150 registrations for National Convention. The profit from the entire event was $74,000 which has been given to Treasurer Carol Jones to save for the future. Both Junior and Senior Dairy Bowl teams won their national competitions, an Illinois Dairyman (Boyd Schaufelberger) was elected National Vice President, and we received lots of compliments from all over the country. It was a team effort and Ron thanked everyone who helped. Marla Behrends showed the membership a new promotional poster for Fuel Up To Play 60 which includes a picture of Dale and Linda Drendel! Things have been going well for Midwest Dairy and the check off program, so contact Marla if you need anything. She will be searching for an intern next year and scholarships will be available. Resolutions by Ron Schaufelberger, Bruce Clanton and Gene McCoy. A motion to accept the nominations was made by Jerry Smith, second by Ed Smith and the motion carried. Jerry Smith moved we change the Fiscal year from November 1 to October 31. Bruce Clanton seconded the motion. Discussion took place and Boyd Schaufelberger moved to refer the motion to the Planning and Evaluation Committee. 2015 SENIOR BREEDER AWARD Lynn & Gary Zehr, Zehrview Holsteins, Graymont, IL Back in the 50’s, a couple of young boys were growing up on a small Holstein dairy farm. It appeared that the boys could have been more interested in imitating Roy Rogers by playing cowboys and Indians than helping on the dairy farm. At times, the two got into some heavy spats, but even so, these boys were inseparable. Their dad started this Holstein operation with his folks. They milked the cows in a stanchion barn. As the boys grew a bit older, dad took the family to the county fair. It was a fun day of rides, fair food and watching the livestock show. That was the beginning of a passion and desire that continues on today. Their dad decided to select the kids a heifer to show the following year. This Senior Yearling, after many hours of preparing her for the show, won first place. Little did they know how this event would change and mold the rest of their lives. In the years following, the two boys showed at the 4-H fair and eventually added more shows and fairs. As they grew up, the Holstein Cow became a huge part of their goals and dreams. Although school activities were also important to them, the Holstein Cow always came first. The eldest son returned to the farm after graduating from Illinois State University, while the younger brother stayed home to farm after graduating high school. The partnership was officially established in the late 70’s. They continued milking registered Holstein Illinois Holstein Herald
cows and farming row crops and alfalfa. Their top priority always focused on selecting and breeding for show quality animals and pedigrees. This partnership survived a terrible tragedy in 1994, a barn fire. It was a very sad day because several show cattle perished. However good genetics and hard work brought future show ring success to this farm. They converted from the stanchion barn to a trigon parlor and added a 12 stall box stall barn. 2015 JUNIOR BREEDER AWARD John Mitchell, Mitchell’s Holsteins, Winnebago, IL John is a 2008 graduate of the University of Illinois where he was active in Alpha Gamma Rho, competed with the dairy judging team, was part of the platinum award winning team representing Illinois in the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge, was president of the Illini Dairy Club, and was named a senior 100 honoree by the University during the spring of his senior year. Growing up, John was active in 4-H, showing his dairy animals and sheep, and took advantage of every opportunity to participate in dairy bowl practices and competitions with both 4-H and the county and state Holstein teams. He has been to nearly every National Holstein Convention since 2000, either participating in youth programs or coaching the youth of Illinois. John farms in Winnebago, Illinois as one of the co-owners of Mitchell Dairy and Grain LLC. Formed in 2014 by Tim, John, and Aaron Mitchell, it is the most recent expansion of the Mitchell’s family farm. John is the 6th generation to farm in Winnebago since 1868 and is now the 3rd generation on the current dairy operation, which was purchased in 1960 by John’s grandfather, J. Douglas Mitchell. Shortly before John graduated from high school in 2004, with a nod toward future expansion, a new milking facility large enough to accommodate a double twelve herringbone parlor was built and initially outfitted as a double eight. When John returned home from the University of Illinois with a degree in Animal Sciences, in the
spring of 2008, plans were placed in motion to include John in the business and there was talk of expansion in the dairy once again. Sadly plans slowed when his dad Mike, and brother Kyle, died in a farming accident in July of 2008, but expansion soon continued with the addition of a new calf building, commodity shed, and a number of bunker silos in 2009. Expansion began again in the spring of 2014 when John’s brother, Aaron, graduated from the University of Illinois and returned to join the farming operation. The 350 cow facility was completed in early 2015 and the first cows were moved into the new barn in May. The business is currently milking 320 head, three times a day with a rolling herd average of 24,784 pounds of milk, 872 pounds of fat, and 759 pounds of protein. The herd had a BAA of 104 on the last classification and has also garnered the Progressive Genetics Herd award for the last 17 years with their average CTPI in 2015 coming in at 1825. The family also farms about 2500 acres, primarily corn and beans. John recently completed seven years as a state director representing the BooneWinnebago Holstein club for the Illinois

Holstein Association, is currently president of the Boone-Winnebago Holstein club, is a member of the Winnebago-Boone County Farm Bureau Board, and is president of the Winnebago-Boone County Farm Bureau young farmer’s committee. John enjoys competing in young farmer’s discussion meets and has represented Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau at the state level multiple times. Furthermore, he spends countless hours each year coaching dairy bowl teams, preparing future generations of young dairy enthusiasts for state and national competitions. It’s crazy to think that soon we’ll begin preparing for Spring Thing 2016! We’ll get to see the best from around the state compete in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, folding display and speech contests. I encourage all of the juniors to learn about a topic in the dairy industry, then write a speech or create a poster to teach others about it. This year, Spring Thing is moving to the Parke Regency Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington and will be held the last weekend in February. Start studying! Before we get to spring, however, we have to first get through winter, which is fast approaching. When everything is frozen, it’s difficult to get nearly anything to go right on the farm. Of course, it doesn’t help when the driveway is covered in ice either! I hope that everyone will be patient in their chores and careful when working to avoid any accidents. Finally, I’d like to say congratulations to everyone who exhibited at the national shows this fall, way to represent Illinois!

Participants must be 9 or older to be eligible for a state dairy bowl team. Rookie room for newer competitors. No phone calls can be made in junior rooms. Contact a chaperone for making calls. Alcoholic beverages and drugs are strictly prohibited by any participant. Participants must remain in the hotel. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled programs and meetings. Visitation in other participant’s rooms will be allowed with an open door policy. Curfew is 1:00 a.m. and room checks will be made. Room checks will be made before the participant may leave the event on Sunday. Any participant found in violation of any of the above rules will result in expulsion from the event and the notification of parents to provide transportation home at their own expense. COMMITTEE MEETINGS President Jason Oertel invites all members of the Illinois Holstein Association to attend the Committee Meetings on Friday, January 8th, 2016 at The Chateau Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington, IL. The day will begin with a Planning Meeting at 9am, followed by committee meetings, lunch and additional committee meetings after lunch. We will conclude the day with Evaluation/ Budgeting and a Board Meeting. Detailed schedule and times are printed below. Again this year, all IHA members are welcome and encouraged to join us! Everyone can choose to attend whichever committee
meetings they would like, according to the schedule below. We are hoping Club members will divide themselves up and attend different meetings so each Club can be represented on as many Committees as possible If you would like to stay overnight at the hotel for the meetings the next day, you can call 309-662-2020 to make reservations.
