FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to Illinois Holstein members and guests, The date is November 11th, Veterans Day. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our Veterans for their service to this great country. Because of this, we can live here in peace, and have the freedoms we enjoy. The USA may not be perfect, but compared to other parts of the world, we have the best. My dad served during the Korean War. The calendar says fall, but we got about 8 inches of snow today and the temperature is 16 degrees. Wind is blowing pretty good also!! There is still an awful lot of corn and beans in the fields. This has to be one of the most challenging years ever for farmers, especially dairy farmers. The bright side is the price of milk has slowly crept up. I wish I could tell you the future really looks great! It’s hard for me to believe the past two years have gone so fast. This is the last letter I will write as your Illinois Holstein President. Some of Illinois Holstein Herald

you may be saying, “Thank goodness!” Steve’s letters will be a lot more interesting I will guarantee...if he gets elected?! No, in all seriousness, I have enjoyed my time as your President. I’ve enjoyed working with the board of directors and committee chairs...including Steve! I’ve also had A LOT of good mentors. Our employees have been the best to work with also! Thank you to everyone who has helped make the past two years enjoyable. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the committee meetings in January. Also, the Illinois Senior Holstein Convention is coming up here in February. They are planning to have a Futures Sale again this year at the State Convention, so if you have picks of flushes or individual heifers to consign, be sure to contact Herb Schmiedeskamp at 217-242-3920. I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and that you have some time to spend with family and friends. Also, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hope everyone stays safe, healthy, and above all, spend some quality time with your family.

Take care,

Ed Smith Page 3

Hello everyone! I hope everyone has had a safe harvest! Also, I hope the show season has wrapped up well for everyone at World Dairy Expo and NAILE. This past year at World Dairy Expo, I was able to present awards to the class winners and champions of the 2019 International Junior Holstein Show. While passing out awards, I saw some of Illinois’ finest junior-owned Holsteins walk across the colored shavings and win numerous awards. After being up at Expo, I was able to represent Prairie Central and IL FFA at the 2019 National FFA Convention Dairy Judging Contest in Indianapolis, Indiana. My team, consisting of two sibling pairs, Ainsley and Ashlyn Kratochvil, and Jacob Raber and myself. Overall, we became the 2019 Reserve National Champions of 43 teams, and now have the opportunity to represent the US in two international contests in Europe in June 2020. Finally, at NAILE, I represented Illinois 4-H for the final time. My dairy bowl team, Regan Scidmore, Taylor Huels and Hannah Alberts, placed in the top half of the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest in Louisville, Kentucky. I was not able to participate in the judging contest there due to the FFA Contest, but the rest of my team did. They placed 10th overall, an awesome achievement! Again, I hope everyone has had a safe harvest, and can finish up soon if you haven’t yet. Good luck this coming winter and Merry Christmas!

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT

Carters Corner is operated by Tyler Carter and his dad, Andy. They milk 100 cows in a freestall and double 6 milking parlor. The show cows and show heifers are housed in a box stall barn. Located in Greenville, Illinois, Carters Corner was established in 1961 when Tyler’s Grandma Joann and Grandpa Henry bought the farm. Some of their highlighted cow families and herd favorites include Carters Corner Fever Pen EX-94, Uber-Haven Dfint Chrome-Red EX-92 and Ms Atwood Lacey EX-92. The Carters have had Grand Champion at the Illinois Championship Holstein Show two out of the last three years. A tremendous feat for this hard-working farm family! This year, they also won Grand Champion and Supreme Champion at the Illinois State Fair with crowd favorite, ChromeRed. Chrome also went on to place 2nd at World Dairy Expo in the International Red & White Show Junior 3-Year-Old class.

What does the future hold for the Carters Corner herd favorites? Chrome is resting comfortably until April when is due back for next year’s show season. Fever Pen is in retirement and is on a an extensive IVF program. Lacey is also being IVF’d and is due back in June. A very impressive start to the success of Illinois Holstein’s 2017 Junior Breeder award recipient! We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Tyler and everyone at Carters Corner.
