ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN ASSOCIATION AMENDMENTS TO BY-LAWS Amend Article III, Section 7 – “A local Holstein club shall continue to be a recognized club so long as it has an annual paid up adult membership into the Association of at least 15 10, and that the membership organize and carry out the recommended yearly program.” Amend Article III, Section 9 – “Representation of the local Holstein club on the Board of Directors of the Association is so designated in Article VI, Section 5.” Amend Article VI, Section 2 (a) – “Each duly organized and recognized local club shall be entitled to up to two (2) Directors to serve a term of three (3) years. Amend Article VI, Section 2 (b) – “Each duly organized and recognized local club shall be entitled to additional Directors based upon the average adult membership of the preceding three (3) years as determined by the Secretary of Association on September 30 of each year: 111 to 160 members – 3 Directors; 161 to 210 members – 4 Directors; 211 to 250 members – 5 Directors.” Amend Article VI, Section 4 – “Additional Directors will consist of the Director(s) and Officer(s) of the Holstein Association USA, Inc. residing in Illinois whose term will run concurrent with the term as a National Director or Officer and for two years following their retirement from that office. The retiring Illinois Association President will automatically become a member of the Board of Directors for two years following his or her retirement from that office.” Amend Article VI, Section 6 – “The President and Vice-President of the Illinois Junior Holstein Association will automatically be non-voting members of the Board of Directors of the Association.” Amend Article VII, Section 1 – “A person or persons filling the position or positions of Secretary and Treasurer will be evaluated and recommended by the Executive Committee annually, subject to approval of the Board of Directors. The Secretary and Treasurer shall serve as a non-voting member(s) or members of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.” Amend Article VII, Section 2 – “Fifty Forty percent of the Board of Directors shall constitute a quorum upon notice of such meeting to all Directors.” Amend Article X – “This Constitution and By-Laws may be amended at any annual meeting or a special meeting of the Association called for that purpose, provided notice of the amendment proposed to be made is included in the notice and sent by the Secretary to the members or included in the Illinois Holstein Herald publication not less than ten (10) days prior to the date set for the meeting, and provided the said amendment receives the votes of two-thirds majority of those present.” Illinois Holstein Association By-Laws available upon request Page 2

FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings to Illinois Holstein Members and Friends, Here it is time to write my final article for 2018--where did this year go already? It’s that time of year when we need to reflect back on all we have to be thankful for. Family getting together for Turkeyday for fellowship and great food--I haven’t missed too many of those great home cooked Thanksgiving Dinners as you can tell! Then the next big day is Christmas, and let’s not forget the real reason for celebrating Christmas. Without Christ being born and coming to Earth to live and then going to the cross, we would not have the hope of having eternal life. I’m thankful we have something to go on to if we believe in Him. We will be having Committee Meetings the first week in January. You will find the schedule in this issue of the Herald. There will be an Exec. Board meeting and a full Board Meeting also. Please plan to attend these meetings. We need a big turnout for the Committee Meetings to discuss a variety of topics. We need your input. If you don’t come and express your concerns and give us some directions--then don’t complain later at different functions because this or that was done or not done. The State Convention will be held in Greenville the first weekend in February with Ron and Karen Schaufelberger as the chairmen. This promises to be a great convention. I was informed of some of the activities that are planned, so you don’t want to miss that great southern hospitality!! The convention schedule can be found in this issue also. Let’s all attend and make this one of the most attended conventions ever. Ron is working on having a past presidents and spouses supper on Friday night. I’m looking forward to that. Spring Thing will be coming up in February. All Juniors should plan to attend. I ran across this Farmer’s Prayer in one of my Red Power magazines and I want to share it with you. “Lord, bless this farmland and the seeds we sow, bless every animal and the crops we grow. Thank you for the trusty tractors that tend our land, and for the strength and wisdom of every helping hand. Grant us peace, comfort and guidance from above, so we may prosper and share our bountiful harvest with love. And through your gracious gifts, keep us safe from harm. God’s precious blessings of family, friends, and our farm.” Amen I hope and pray that we all have a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. I’m thankful we live in a country where we can worship, celebrate, and live in freedom and safety. Until next time,

DUTCHESS DOMAIN Greetings, I hope you all have been able to finish up harvest and prepare for the upcoming winter. As my year as Dutchess slows down I would like to take the time to thank you all for the opportunity to represent Illinois and the Holstein breed. I have had a great summer attending the shows and meeting all of you. It’s never too early to think about running for Dutchess next year. I highly recommend it! I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Choose sales managers that “specialize” in dairy cattle sales. If you have a sick cow, do you call a medical doctor or do you call a veterinarian? Naturally, you use common sense and call the veterinarian! The past 60 years, I’ve witnessed general auctioneers try to manage dairy cattle sales while t hey may be ok to manage “grade” commercial dairy cattle sales, they absolutely fall flat on their faces and end up embarrassing themselves trying to manage registered purebred sales. The reason being, they (general auctioneers) do not know the dairy industry. They are not natural dairy “cow-men!” I’ll give examples - After selling the farm equipment, a general auctioneer opened the dairy cattle part of the sale by making this statement, “I don’t know why anybody would want to get into the dairy business today!” That really helped the sale! I witnessed a general auctioneer at a dairyman’s estate sale call a “Surge” milk receiving jar in the milkhouse a “bulb!” Another general auctioneer called a “Surge” glass pipeline “tubing!” A general auctioneer did not hold sale under cover (inside building or tent). Guess what? After 10 cows had been sold, it started raining and stopped the sale, sale was delayed for 30 minutes. General auctioneers always use buyer’s numbers which stops the sale to ask their bidding number. Slip passers at registered dairy cattle sales go to the buyer to get information from buyer without stopping the sale. Last thing you want to do is stop the sale, especially if the sale is going well! I’ll admit, registering with the sales clerk before the sale to get bidding number, the sale manager gets more information on potential buyers. Registered sales are like a fraternity, sales managers know most potential buyers anyway! I have been a Registered Holstein breeder, dairy herdsman, AI technician, direct herd salesman, DHIA supervisor and dairy cattle sales manager and auctioneer and have been involved with and attended dairy cattle sales for 60 years! I feel I have at least a token of experience and observations to make the above preceding statements! The late Registered Holstein breeder Cal Meyer of Calmey Farm of Peotone/Manteno, Illinois, who also was a pedigree expert and reader of pedigrees at Registered Holstein sales for several sale managers in the Midwest once told me, “Randy, you manage a sale as well as anybody in the country, plus, you have better dairy cattle and sale equipment than anyone!” Any reader of this letter that would like to discuss this subject further, either positive or negative, please feel free to call or text me at (309) 368-4084. OBITUARY Gary Huels
Gary V. Huels, age 44 of rural Carlyle, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese on Saturday, October 13, 2018. Mr. Huels was born on October 2, 1974, in Breese, Illinois, a son of Lester and Helen (Langenhorst) Huels. Gary was a dairy farmer, and he loved showing cows with his children. He was a member of St. Theresa’s Church – Marydale, the Clinton County Farm Bureau, the Clinton County Holstein Club, and was a leader of the Clinton County Junior Holstein Club. Gary is survived by his children – Taylor, Kaylie, and Brayden Huels; his parents – Lester and Helen Huels; his siblings – Rhonda Rainey and husband Matt, Joanie Thole and husband Randy, Debbie Fuhler and husband Robert, and Rodney Huels and wife Dani; his grandmother – Dolores Langenhorst; his ex-wife – Trisha Huels; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents – Paul and Agnes Huels and Vince Langenhorst; and 2 cousins – Craig Huels and John Kleber. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Huels are suggested to a college fund for his children and will be received at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle. Page 5

The International Red & White Show was held October 4-5, 2018 and was judged by Blair Weeks. The International Holstein Show was held October 5-6, 2018 and Carl Phoenix was the judge. The 2018 National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging contest was another premier event for our Illinois 4-H dairy team. Team members included: Addison Raber, Gridley; Taylor Huels, Carlyle; Jeff Kern, Prairie du Rocher; and Rachel Scidmore, Chadwick. The Illinois 4-H dairy team placed 16th team overall in a strong contest held at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin.
The Illinois 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team excelled at the 2018 National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl competition held in Louisville, Kentucky on November 2nd and 3rd. Illinois 4-H’ers brought home the 4th place win out of a field of seventeen teams from throughout the United States. Team members included: Emma Carlson, Kirkland; Payton Erbsen, Lanark; Lane Heinzmann, Carlyle; and Briley Lenkaitis, Eldorado. In addition, Emma Carlson placed 6th top individual out of 68 participants.
The Illinois team was among 23 teams from across the nation who had the opportunity to compete for honors on October 1st. On an individual basis, Addison Raber received 10th place ribbon in the Ayrshire breed and was 24th in the Guernsey breed. Rachel Scidmore placed 19th in the Brown Swiss breed and Taylor Huels was 27th in Brown Swiss. On a “top 10” team basis by breed, Illinois 4-H was recognized for placing 10th in Jerseys. The Illinois 4-H team was sponsored by River Valley Dairy, Tremont, and Illinois 4-H Foundation. In addition, The Equity, Effingham, sponsored the team jackets. The team was coached by Dave Fischer, University of Illinois 4-H Dairy Program Coordinator.
The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl has become a premier educational 4-H event as it challenges the contestants’ dairy knowledge in various areas including; dairy production, business management, dairy products and dairy science. Competition includes answering a 50-question test and a double elimination contest. Each round consists of a series of 5 team questions and 20 toss-up questions. The Illinois team won 4 rounds with their double loss to the 3rd place team from Vermont. Thank you to Diamond V of Cedar Rapids, Iowa for sponsoring the quiz bowl team jackets. Dave Fischer, University of Illinois 4-H Dairy Program Coordinator, serves as the team coach and is assisted by Becky Meier, Ridott. The following day, this same Illinois foursome also participated in the NAILE youth dairy judging contest where Briley Lenkaitis won “first place” individual in judging the Ayrshire breed and the Illinois team was 10th. The team finished 15th high team overall among 20 teams in the youth division. Special thanks to the Illinois 4-H Foundation and River Valley Dairy, Tremont, for sponsoring the team expenses.

NATIONAL BOARD The HAUSA board of directors recently met on November 13th and 14th. With the continued slump in dairy economics seen across the country, a slowdown in record growth in HAUSA programs should be no surprise. While registrations and transfers are down so far in 2018, number of cows enrolled in Holstein Complete® is at an all-time high. The Complete® program offers members a discount on products and services like registrations, pedigrees, classification, genomic testing and pedigrees. Agri-Tech Analytics also continues to grow in cow numbers as members across the U.S. are using ATA to process their herd records. The purchase of ATA by HAUSA several years ago has proved to be a good investment. It is important for your association to continue to identify new potential sources of revenue. Two new such programs were realized in 2018. HAUSA classifiers now offer phenotypic evaluation for the Guernsey breed. Offering our classification services to other breeds just makes a lot of sense and so far has been very successful. Also new in 2018 is TriStarSM AMR. This program is designed for dairies with robotic milking systems, who no longer participate in traditional milk recording programs. If you would like to have your robot recorded records flow through the Holstein herdbook and recorded on pedigrees, please contact your Holstein field representative. We also received a report on the Elevation project. Elevation is the upgrade of internet services and software for HAUSA. This will play a very important role in how we best serve members in the future. In the next several months, members should be able to start seeing some of the first results of this program. The HAUSA research grant program was initiated in 2017 and is meant for continued breed improvement. Money from this program comes from the reserve fund. A report from the first grant program is expected spring 2019 and will be from Dr. Christian Maltecca of North Carolina State University, focusing on utilizing genomic information to minimize the effects of inbreeding, while increasing genetic gain. At the fall board meeting we approved the next research grant proposal chosen from 7 submissions. Dr. Anna C. Denicol from University of California-Davis will receive funding to research improving heat tolerance of Holstein cattle. Members of the board of directors each serve on two different HAUSA committees along with members appointed by President Schaufelberger. Those committees are Audit, Genetic Advancement, Type Advisory, Junior Advisory, Legislation and Industry Affairs, International Marketing and the Show committee. We heard reports from the Audit, Junior Advisory, and Show committees at the fall board meeting. The board was asked to approve the 2019 Judges List for both the National and Qualified Lists. If you are interested in being added to future lists, please attend the next judges conference to be held during the Midwest Spring National Show on March 29th in Columbus, OH. Holstein America returned to the airwaves on RFD TV in August after debuting in February across the country. These programs feature a variety of members and aid in promoting a positive image of the Holstein cow and its caretakers to the general public. Google the word Holstein on YouTube and this program appears at the top of the list. With low milk prices forcing members to evaluate ways to add value to their farms, don’t forget the opportunities that exist with HAUSA programs and services. These are long term investments, to improve the profitability of your herd. Genomic testing continues to increase and to do that it starts with proper identification through your Holstein Association. Recording and processing of milk records is essential in evaluating efficiencies in your dairy. If you don’t process your records through ATA, take a look at what they have to offer and see if that is a viable alternative to your current DRPC. Classification can add value for certain markets and continued collection of type data allows us correct traits that may need improvement in our breed. Other official products from HAUSA allow you to promote your herd more easily either domestically or internationally. We all are accustomed to market swings in agriculture, but don’t let this be the sole definer in your life. As Christmas time approaches, please take time with your family to reflect on the many blessings we all enjoy in this country, including those provided by our great Holstein breed. BOARD MEETING September 9, 2018 · Arrowsmith, IL Following the conclusion of the Illinois Holstein Picnic, the Illinois Holstein Board of Directors met September 9, 2018 at Bluff-Ridge Holsteins in Arrowsmith, Illinois. The meeting was called to order by President Ed Smith at 1:45 p.m. with nine board members, two staff and one guest present. Secretary Sarah Lenkaitis called the roll of board members. Directors read and reviewed the typed minutes from the last meeting. Boyd Schaufelberger moved to approve the minutes, Kevin Wendling seconded and the motion passed. Carol Jones gave the Treasurer’s report. Club membership rebates will be calculated and mailed to club treasurers by October 1. Discussion followed regarding transferring funds from the Enhancement Fund to the checking account to cover remaining 2018 operational and publication expenses. A motion was made by Dale Drendel for Treasurer, Carol Jones (with the approval of President, Ed Smith) to shift funds from the Enhancement Fund as needed to cover remaining 2018 expenses. It was noted Carol will consult with the bank to determine the best approach. Dave Shanks seconded, and the motion passed. Boyd made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report, Richard Meier seconded and the motion passed. Stephanie Hammerly submitted a publications and promotions report that was read by Secretary, Sarah Lenkaitis. The fall Illinois Holstein Herald is closing soon. Stephanie has received space reservations from four advertisers. Space reservations are due September 12 and camera-ready ads are due September 15. The issue, which is also a Midwest Holsteins issue, will be mailed the last week of September. The winter issue of the Illinois Holstein Herald is scheduled for the end of November. It was discussed the format, including the shortened newsletter introduced in 2018, will be reviewed and discussed at the committee meeting in January. Carol Jones moved to approve the publications and promotions report, Steve Irwin seconded and the motion carried. There was no Extension report given. Boyd Schaufelberger gave the Holstein USA report. Illinois had a great showing at the National Holstein Convention in Michigan June 29-July 3. Junior President, Brock Irwin provided specific results including: Brock Irwin placed second overall in Dairy Jeopardy and second in the speaking contest, Nathan Erbsen was named a YDJM and Illinois competed well in dairy bowl and scrapbook contests. OLD BUSINESS Kevin Wendling reviewed the proposed bylaw changes. In accordance with the bylaws, the proposed changes will be provided to the membership at least ten days prior to the annual meeting. NEW BUSINESS Steve Irwin reported the 2018 State Holstein Show went well. Show chairs, Paula Bovre and Joe Engel did a great job getting donations and coordinating with the fairgrounds staff. There is an opening for a new show co-chairman. Next year is the final year of the contract with the fairgrounds in Bloomington. The show will be July 10-12, 2019.
Sarah Lenkaitis and Carol Jones gave a brief update on membership. A breakdown of members by club was distributed to the board. As of August 1, there are 379 senior and 187 junior members. The 2019 membership rates will be $40 for a senior membership and $15 for a junior membership. Ed Smith reminded the board the 2019 State Convention will be February 1-2, 2019 in Greenville. The Gateway Holstein Club is planning to include a tour of Rolling Lawn’s milk processing facility. Ed Smith is also planning to host a past President’s dinner on Friday night. COMMITTEE MEETINGS President Ed Smith invites all members of the Illinois Holstein Association to attend the Committee Meetings on Friday, January 4th, 2019 at The Radisson Hotel, 8 Traders Circle, in Normal, IL. The day will begin at 9 a.m., lunch will be held at noon and additional committee meetings will be after lunch. We will conclude the day with a Board Meeting. JUNIOR CONTESTS CO-COACH POSITIONS AVAILABLE
Job Duties: 1. Attend and prepare/organize materials and meeting times of all practices and competitions 2. Assist other coaches in supervising and running practices 3. Help teams/players build knowledge 4. Help teams/players build skills/strategies 5. Promote positive interactions that lead players to value, respect, and support each other 6. Must travel to and from National Convention with teams 7. Shall review all materials needed for competition 8. Create a timeline and budget and submit budget to advisors 9. Read or judge a competition room if needed at Spring Thing 10. Host spring parent/contestant meeting immediately following Spring Thing 11. Update letter and informational packets for all selected contestants/parents 12. Shall obtain permission slips and medical information from all team members 13. Organize and complete registrations for National teams and contestants accordance with deadlines and submit to advisors 14. Help with travel, housing, registration, competition, shirts, and meals 15. Coordinate correspondence to state Holstein officers and advisors 16. Shall be a liaison between state directors, JAC members, and National Holstein 17. Work with JAC advisors in all other aspects of activities 18. The first annual Ronald E. Debatin Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Trenton Black, a student at the University of Illinois. Trenton, a junior majoring in animal sciences is from Carmi. He has been named to the Dean’s List and completed the I-BELIEF Research Internship at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center during Summer, 2018. Trenton was raised on a farm and has completed Dairy Cattle Evaluation. He will be participating on the University of Illinois Dairy Cattle Judging Team in 2019. He plans on attending veterinary school and becoming a large animal veterinarian, while also managing his own farm. Trenton’s parents are Brent and Trena Black. The scholarship is in memory of Ronald Debatin, who was a graduate of the University of Illinois with a master of science degree in animal nutrition in 1967. He was on the University of Illinois Dairy Judging Team in 1965. He was a President of the Illinois Holstein Association and a board member of Select Sires. Ron was a dairy farmer for 27 years in Pocahontas and valued highly the experiences and talents developed in dairy cattle judging. The scholarship is made possible by numerous gifts made in memory of Ron.
JUNIOR REPORTER Juniors, Be sure to mark your calendar for the 2018 Illinois Junior Holstein Association Spring thing! It is Saturday February 23rd through Sunday the 24th in East Peoria. Please keep an eye on our facebook page (Illinois Junior Holstein Association) and website (illinoisholsteins. com/juniors/) for the release of the registration forms and deadlines. All juniors are gladly welcome to participate. Speeches, posters, dairy quiz bowl, and dairy jeopardy are offered to all juniors willing to compete. Also, a big congratulations to the Illinois Red & White Juniors at the North American International Livestock Expo for earning state herd, and to all the other juniors who showed there as well. Hard work really does pay off! I hope to see you all at spring thing. Enjoy your winter and stay warm!

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Established in 1910, the fourth-generation Rolling Lawns Farm is located in southern Illinois outside of Greenville. Since 2016, operators Michael and Jennifer Turley along with mother, Connie, have marketed their quality, fresh milk in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Michael’s great-grandfather, Samuel Schmollinger, joined the Holstein Association in 1920 and thus began the nearly 100 year passion with registers Holsteins. The farm has maintained a milking herd size of approximately 120 cows. Along with the family, herdsman Nathan Miller operates the farm on a daily basis. Facing the same present-day challenges as all dairy farmers, Michael has pursued a new business model for the farm in hopes of sustaining the family legacy with the Holstein cow. In May of 2018, the Turley’s completed construction of a Grade A dairy processing facility located in Greenville. They transport their daily milk production to the plant for bottling. The Rolling Lawns Farm brand is on the label of every gallon and half-gallon of fresh fluid milk, half and half and heavy cream. Their primary customer base consists of popular restaurants, coffee shops, ice cream parlors and bakeries located in St. Louis and surrounding areas. These business owners have a desire to partner with local farmers for many of their ingredients. The personal relationship with the farmer is a valued aspect of their buying decision for dairy products. The brand’s reputation will be based on producing the highest quality, freshest product. Additionally, with consumers being more interested in the origin of their food, the farm and the beautiful registered Holsteins will take a “front and center” positioning. We are excited to share that Rolling Lawns Farm and the Turley family have offered to host several of the 2019 Illinois Senior Holstein Convention activities at The Milkhouse, their new facility!
