BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Meier Meadows, Ridott
The Meier family of Meier Meadows in Ridott continue to give back to the Illinois Holstein Association. They will be opening their farm up for visitors during the Illinois Holstein Senior Convention the first weekend in February. Although the weather is unpredictable, you can be sure to see a great herd of Holsteins and be welcomed by a great family. Truly a family operation, the next generation is very involved with the cows and with Junior Holstein activities participating in shows, dairy judging and dairy quiz bowl. Rachel Busker is the current Little Miss Holstein. The Meiers recently built a new facility and are looking forward to having visitors. Here are just a few photos of the new barn. Thank you to the Meier family for hosting the Illinois Holstein Association and sharing these photos with us! It is with great regret I will not be renewing my contract as State Secretary after the end of the calendar year. Due to commitments at a new full-time position, I won’t have the time necessary to complete the jobs required of the Secretary in a timely manner nor will I be able to take leave to attend Holstein events during the work week. I will greatly miss serving the Association in this capacity and seeing the members who have become such great friends as often. Working for the Association for the past 6 years has been an honor and pleasure to work for such a great group as well as a blessing, allowing me to provide for my family during some tough times. I wish all the members of the Association much success and thank everyone for working with me over the years!

FROM THE PRESIDENT S e a s o n ’ s Greetings everyone, I would imagine that by the time you read this, winter is already setting in, hopefully things have slowed to a dull roar. Although we haven’t milked cows for a couple years now, I still know better than to think just because fall is behind us, there is nothing to do. I did always appreciate the end of fall field work so that we could spend more time with the cows and not also have a million other things going at the same time. I’m sure that’s the case for many of you. It also allowed a little time to reconnect with my Illinois Holstein friends, whether it be at State Convention or Winter Committee meetings or at a sale somewhere and that time of year is here. Our committee meetings are scheduled for January 5th and the State Convention will be the first weekend in February (further details for both in this issue). I want to strongly encourage all of you to come and be a part of the committee meetings. Illinois Holstein is a grass roots organization that depends on you to be involved. You don’t need to sign up for anything, just show up, find an area that interests you and get involved. For me, those committee meetings were really in some ways my first exposure to the actual workings of the organization and a good way to get involved. Over time, those meetings helped foster new friendships that I value to this day. This is the
second year that we will be having our State Convention in February and hopefully many of you can make it. The Northwest Holstein Club is this year’s host and they have an exciting and fun filled program on tap. Try to attend, it’s always a good time and you might learn something! We’re also in that time of year when we are ringing out the old and bringing in the new. Now Tina, don’t take offense to the ringing out the old, but it that spirit, Tina Yagow, our Secretary for the past six years, is leaving us at the end of 2017. She will truly be missed by our organization. Organized, friendly, easy to work with and reliable are all traits that come to mind when describing Tina (makes killer pies too!) Although were losing a good one, we are excited to announce that Sarah Lenkaitis has been hired to serve as our new Secretary. Sarah, we all look forward to working with you in the years ahead. Another “ringing in the new” is the birth of Hannah Joelle Hammerly. Congratulations to our Herald Editor Stephanie Hammerly and husband Joel, that’s right Joel, you’re at the bottom of the totem pole now, just ask any new dad. Seriously, you two are going to make great parents and now I’m gonna start sounding old, but they do grow up fast. Lastly and still on the topic of time going by fast, I am concluding my term as President of this Association. It has truly been an honor and pleasure to serve you these last two years. We’ve had a few challenges along the way to go along with many successes. I am pleased to be leaving the Association in great shape moving forward. Sincerely,

LENKAITIS NAMED NEW ILLINOIS HOLSTEIN SECRETARY
Sarah Lenkaitis is originally from a dairy farm in Wisconsin and now resides in St. Charles, Illinois. There she, along with her husband Andy, manage his family’s 120-head herd of Registered Red and White Holsteins. A 2008 graduate of the University of WisconsinMadison, Sarah earned a degree in dairy science. She has held several marketing and communications positions at agencies with agricultural clients. Today, Sarah works on the farm and is a freelance writer. She is excited to begin offering tours at the farm this summer following the completion of a new barn and installation of two robotic milking units.

DUTCHESS DOMAIN I hope all of you are doing well as the cold settles in and the days become shorter. As this year draws to a close I would just like to say how happy I am to represent the state of Illinois and the Holstein breed. FROM THE NATIONAL BOARD_ DISTRICT NEWS Hello from your Holstein USA board of directors. After a busy fall with some great shows, we settle into preparations for winter. We trust that harvest was productive and safe. With winter comes planning for a new year. The same is true with your Holstein Association and planning is underway for the many activities scheduled for 2018. The delegate election process is underway for the 2018 National Convention in Traverse City, MI. Be sure to mark your ballot for delegate and plan to attend the convention. The Michigan Holstein Association has a fun and interesting program planned. We would love to see you there. HAUSA committee activities have begun to prepare for 2018. Committees play a big role in bringing grass root ideas to the board. Their input guides the classification program, weightings in the TPI Formula and show ring policy. Committees also guide junior activities, legislative and industry involvement and our international marketing emphasis. The 2018 National Winter Update meeting will be held in the Midwest this year. It will be held in conjunction with the Iowa Holstein Association annual meeting February 24, 2018

in Manchester, IA. It is a great opportunity to get a current update on association activities and give input to your leadership. The Holstein board continues to plan for the future. As the dairy industry continues to change, the HAUSA board is working to prepare and position the association to lead in information availability, genetic improvement and industry issues. YDLI DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI Nate Janssen, of Wheaton, Ill., has been named the 2018 Young Dairy Leaders Institute Distinguished Alumni Leader by the Holstein Foundation. The Holstein Foundation recognizes one Young Dairy Leaders Institute (YDLI) graduate annually who has made noteworthy contributions and applied skills gained during their YDLI experience for the advancement of the dairy industry. Nate was a graduate of YDLI Class 4. “Today, as director of farmer relations for Dairy Management Inc., I utilize skills learned through the YDLI program daily and encourage others to tell their story, which is so critical in the dairy landscape today. I personally know several prior recipients of this award whose accomplishments have had a far-reaching impact on the dairy community. To even be considered with this group is very humbling,” Janssen said. Janssen was named to his position at Dairy Management Inc. in 2013, after 14 years as the dairy operations manager for Golden Oaks Farm, Wauconda, Ill. Previous to Golden Oaks Farm, he worked for Cargill Animal Nutrition as a territory manager. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. Aside from his work with Dairy Management Inc., Nate is involved in several agricultural organizations. He has served on the board of directors for the National Dairy Shrine, and the finance committee for the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association, among others. Janssen is active in the Illinois Holstein Illinois Holstein Herald
Association, serving as the co-chair of the state sale, championship show and the 2015 National Holstein Convention host day. “YDLI has impacted me in ways that no other program has. The personal development skills I acquired during my time in Class 4 have helped mold me into the person I am today, and will be tomorrow. Additionally, the communication skills I learned including understanding personalities, telling my story and handling difficult situations have been the foundation of my professional development. Not to be overlooked, as a critical benefit to the program, is the networking opportunities it creates,” continued Janssen. Janssen will be recognized during the upcoming YDLI Class 10, Phase 3 program, January 31 – February 3, 2018, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Young Dairy Leaders Institute, a program of the Holstein Foundation, is a nationally recognized three-phase leadership and communication skills development program for young adults working in the dairy industry. DAIRY JUDGING GOLF OUTING
The 14th Illini Dairy Judging team golf outing was held on June 2nd at the University of Illinois Orange Course in Savoy. The event provided a way for University of Illinois alumnae and friends to get together and raise necessary funds for dairy judging team expenses, award scholarships to future Dairy Judging team members and swap stories of the past. Twenty-six teams completed the better ball scramble on a warm day in central Illinois. Midwest Dairy Association and the outing provided prizes. George Kasbergen (Stone Ridge Dairy) sponsored the noon

lunch and BBQ. Individuals and organizations also provided twenty-six hole sponsors. Several Animal Sciences faculty participated in the outing (competing in the scramble or assisting in the outing). The winner of the better ball scramble first flight was the Jeff McCoy team. The winners of the 2nd and 3rd flights were Heather Miller (Shanks’ Ladies team) and Prairie States/Select Sires teams respectively. This year’s University of Illinois Dairy Judging outing raised over $12,000 to support judging team activities. The Cardinal/Cub tickets donated by Mike Turley were the big ticket item at the auction and were purchased by Edgar Busboom. Along with other auction items, the team grossed approximately $1000 for the auction. On a warm day in Central Illinois, 26 teams completed the outing and approximately 140 individuals attended the pork chop BBQ prepared by Andy Buhr (Gifford State Bank) and Edgar and Kay Busboom and swapped stories with old friends. Committee members Steve Laesch, Jason and Tammy Oertal, Chris Kiem, Dan Hornickel, Gene McCoy, and HiDee Ekstrom would like to thank everyone for participating in this year’s outing. The Bluff-Ridge Homebred Heritage Sale was held on December 1, 2017 at the Bond County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Illinois. The sale averaged $2,077 on 81 lots. The high seller at $4,000 was Lot 91 Mel-RV-BP Dundee Daisy-ET. She was purchased by David Butler, Arrowsmith, Illinois. Second high seller at $3,700 was Lot 70 Bluff-Ridge Destry Addie. HIGHLAND DAIRY JUDGING The Highland Community College Dairy Judging Team recently completed another successful judging season. The 2017 Dairy Judging Team members were Charlie Elliott (Freeport), Bria Koester (Dakota), and Andrea Willing (Rock City). The team was coached again this year by Kristi Dinderman (Orangeville). The team began the season traveling to the Accelerated Genetics Contest in Viroqua, WI on September 17. The highlight of the season was a strong showing at the World Dairy Expo on October 1 in Madison, WI. Finally, the team finished the season at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY on November 5. Coach Kristi Dinderman said, “I am extremely proud of our team for the work they put into preparing for our contests. A three-person team has a big disadvantage to a fourperson team at these contests. COMMITTEE MEETINGS President Jason Oertel invites all members of the Illinois Holstein Association to attend the Committee Meetings on Friday, January 5th, 2018 at The Radisson Hotel, 8 Traders Circle, in Normal, IL. The day will begin at 9 a.m., lunch will be held at noon and additional committee meetings will be after lunch. We will conclude the day with a Board Meeting. General Information Participants must be 9 or older to be eligible for a state dairy bowl team. Rookie room for newer competitors Dress appropriately - casual clothes for meetings and semi-formal for the banquet. Any person attending will be subjected to all fees. Activities include: Dairy Bowl, Speech, Dairy Jeopardy, Folding Display, Banquet & evening activity
Guidelines Alcoholic beverages and drugs are strictly prohibited by any participant. Participants must remain in the hotel. Participants are expected to attend all scheduled programs and meetings. Visitation in other participant’s rooms will be allowed with an open-door policy. Curfew is 1:00 a.m. and room checks will be made. Room checks will be made before the participant may leave the event on Sunday. Any participant found in violation of any of the above rules will result in expulsion from the event and the notification of parents to provide transportation home at their own expense. Hello Everyone! As temperatures continue to drop, let’s take a few moments to look back on what the juniors have been up to the past few months. Congratulations to the Illinois 4-H dairy judging team, who received 6th place overall and 8th place in reasons, out of 22 teams, at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest held in Madison, Wisconsin! The team placed 3rd in the Guernsey and Ayrshire breeds, and was 5th in the Holstein breed. They competed well individually as well; Dawn Irwin and Connor Erbsen were named All-American Winners. Congratulations Dawn, Connor, Jared Dickman, and Lauren Robison! Remember that spring thing is just around the corner, and Thanksgiving and Christmas break are both great times to start studying for dairy bowl, making posters, and writing speeches. This year, the National Holstein Convention will be held in Michigan, so let’s work hard to get the very best of Illinois sent to the Great Lakes State! Finally, congratulations to all the juniors’ showing success at the World Dairy Expo as well as the North American International Livestock Exposition! I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable winter!

Join your Illinois Holstein family at the Illinois Holstein Senior Convention in Freeport on February 2-3 and February 24-25 for the Junior Spring Thing. Registration forms for both are in this issue. Looking ahead to spring - yes, it has to get warmer - the deadline for the Spring Herald and Midwest Holsteins issue is February 5th.

NATIONAL 4-H DAIRY JUDGING & QUIZ BOWL Illinois 4-H members participated in the 2017 National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl competition held in Louisville, Kentucky on November 3rd & 4th. Team members included: Dylan Houzenga, Mt. Carroll; Grace Koester, Red Bud; Kaylen Miller, Orangeville; and Rachel Scidmore, Chadwick, IL. The Illinois team competed among 15 states from throughout the United States. The 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl has become a premier event of education and competition among young people involved with 4-H dairy project work. This was the 38rd consecutive year for the Invitational 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl competition, held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). The 4-H dairy quiz bowl is one of the nation’s most challenging contests for dairy youth as it tests the contestants’ knowledge in various areas including; dairy production, dairy business management, dairy products and dairy science. In addition, on the following day, the IL team participated in the NAILE youth dairy judging contest and placed 9th in Ayrshires, 10th in Brown Swiss breed, and 12th overall out of 23 teams. Rachel Scidmore placed 30th high individual and Dylan Houzenga 34th individual overall out of eighty-eight judges. Thank you to the Illinois 4-H Foundation and River Valley Dairy, Tremont, IL for sponsoring the team expenses and Diamond V, Inc. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa for sponsoring the team jackets. Dave Fischer, University of Illinois Extension 4-H Dairy Coordinator, served as the team coach and was assisted by Becky Meier, Ridott, IL. The 2017 National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest, held at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, was another memorable event for Illinois 4-H’ers. The Illinois 4-H dairy judging team placed 6th high team overall in a very strong contest among 22 states. Illinois team members included: Jared Dickman, Lanark; Connor Erbsen, Lanark; Dawn Irwin, Beason; and Lauren Robison, Mulberry Grove, Illinois. Dawn Irwin placed 1st top individual in the Guernsey breed among 86 contestants and placed 2nd top individual in the Ayrshire breed. Furthermore, in the “top 20” individuals by breed, Connor Erbsen was 5th in Holsteins and 11th in Brown Swiss; Jared Dickman placed 7th in Holsteins and 19th in Ayrshires; and Lauren Robison placed 18th in the Brown Swiss and 20th in the Ayrshire breed. Connor Erbsen placed 13th high individual overall and Dawn Irwin placed 18th overall which awarded both team members the “All-American” plaque designation. The Illinois 4-H dairy cattle judging team placed 6th overall at the 2017 National 4-H On a “top 10” team basis by breed, Illinois placed 3rd in Dairy Judging Contest held in Madison, WI during the World Dairy Expo.
