BREEDER SPOTLIGHT Raber Farms, Gridley
Raber Farms is not the traditional dairy operation like most. We do not milk cows ourselves, nor do we raise just Holsteins. Rewinding a bit, I grew up on my grandparents’ dairy farm, Nimtz family, where they milked around 60-80 head of Holsteins. From the time that I could walk, I was out helping with feeding calves, milking cows or preparing for a show. My passion to be with the animals sparked then! After marrying my husband Doug, we moved back to his family farm which is a larger grain operation and had a few head of feeders. My heart still needed the fulfillment of the dairy animals. So, I attended local shows around us to visit with people and see the animals. At one of the district shows, I spoke with Lynn Zehr and he had mentioned that if our kids ever wanted to show, we were welcome to show some of their heifers. And so it began! The following year, Addie and Jacob began showing in PeeWee shows with the help of Zehrview Holsteins. They loved it! After several years, we could see how much they truly enjoyed it. I had asked Lynn if the kids could come and do chores a few nights a week so that they could see what happens all year round, not just before and during show season. By doing this, one could see that their passion and dedication to the hard work was there. I then decided it was time to get a barn started at home. In February of 2015, we converted an old shed into a heifer barn. What a great decision! The kids have learned so much. Being fully responsible for these animals year round has been such a great experience for

them. It started out smaller with having to buy a few heifers to get started. The following year we expanded with buying a few more heifers. This time we didn’t stay with just Holsteins. Our herd has now expanded into owning a few Jerseys and Brown Swiss too. At the same time, the kids have had to research about sires to breed their heifers to. They have now had two cows calve in. It has been fun to have new baby calves here at home for them to bottle feed and see all the changes that happen as they grow older. I mentioned before that we do not milk, so with the help of Erdman Dairy, we are able to keep showing and breeding our cows to grow
our herd. The focus at our farm is showing animals in the dairy industry. The learning experiences and hard work that it takes to make it all function is priceless. All four of us have had to learn how to work together to accomplish many different everyday tasks and obstacles. The future looks bright for Addie and Jacob to continue showing and learning a lifestyle that is one of a kind! The opportunities, experiences and people we meet along the way only help to expand our knowledge. Keep the passion alive!! Amy Raber – Raber Farms

FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello again everyone, As I sit down to write these messages each time, I struggle a little bit on what to say. I could tell you about the upcoming events, but that would just repeat the information that is already packed into this issue of the Herald. I could also encourage everyone to attend these events, I will do that. Committee meetings coming up in January are your chance to become involved in an activity that you enjoy or help provide direction for. Another thing that I would like for you to strongly consider is to attend State Convention this year. As your Vice-President, Ed Smith, would say, “We’re gonna have fun!” You can read about the details in this issue but with a little different twist on the normal convention activities, we hope to provide convention goers with a chance to do some of the usual, see some old friends and have some fun. Lastly, I could bore you with what has recently happened in the Association and you can find that information in the meeting minutes so you probably don’t need me to repeat it. What I will do is reflect a little bit on the past
year. There have been many challenges in the dairy industry in the last year, many changes just within the ranks of Illinois breeders and some changes to the ways that Illinois Holstein does business. The old quote and I don’t know who to attribute it to, “The only constant is change,” holds as true now as it ever has. As I look back on the last year or so, I see another constant, YOU, the membership of the Illinois Holstein Association. Whether it’s needing people to serve on a committee or two, needing someone to take charge and get something done or finding someone to host an event, someone always steps up to the plate. This is a volunteer organization that’s purpose is to promote the value of Registered Holsteins and a lot of what we do supports that but one of the great side effects is that we get to collaborate with some really good people and create friendships that last a lifetime. I am forever thankful for that. Whether things are going like we planned or not, there is always a group of dedicated dairy people there to pick it up and run with it. As I wrap this up, I just want to say thank you for stepping up and making this a great organization to be a part of. I also want to remind folks to take a little time to be thankful for what we have, reflect on the good times and the tough times of the past year and remember that with challenges, come opportunities. Happy Holidays!
DUTCHESS DOMAIN I hope all of you are doing well as the weather is getting colder and the days become shorter. I had a wonderful time at the Illini Golden Opportunity Sale in October passing out slips, watching great cows go through the ring and visiting with people from across the state. I have had many opportunities to share my knowledge and love for the Holstein and Illinois. I want to thank everyone for all the hard work they put in day in and day out. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

2017 ILLINOIS SENIOR HOLSTEIN CONVENTION GUEST SPEAKER
Greg Forbes Siegman has accepted an invitation to speak at the Illinois Senior Holstein Convention on February 4 in Bloomington. The Illinois native is the subject of The Silhouette Man. The book tells the story of an educator’s efforts to use milkshakes to make a difference, his experiences as a student that shaped his path and the grandparent who mentored him. For his civic efforts, Greg has received honors such as the Jefferson Award for Public Service and has been featured by media like Good Morning America. At times, he has written for the media as well -- including publications like Wisconsin State Farmer. At the Convention, Greg will share his story. He also will reflect on what he has learned from those who have worked and lived in farming communities. The session with Greg, which will take place before lunch, is for the whole family: members, spouses and their children (middle-school-aged and up). To register for the 2017 Convention, please go to www.illinoisholsteins.com. To order copies of The Silhouette Man (and/or copies of the student edition, The First Thirty) in advance of the event, visit www. GregForbes.com/store. If you want the books signed to you or your kids or specific friends, you can note that in response to the e-mail you receive after placing your order.

Hey Juniors! I hope everyone enjoyed the warm fall weather! First, I’d like to congratulate the Illinois 4-H dairy quiz bowl team on getting 2nd at Louisville! Congratulations Jordon, Conner, Jared and Charlie! Great job representing Illinois and thank you to Dave Fischer for all the hard work you put into Illinois 4-H youth! I’d also like to congratulate our Illinois winners on all their success at World Dairy Expo and NAILE! It’s crazy to think this is the last Herald until Spring Thing! Christmas break is a great time to start studying for dairy bowl, making posters and writing speeches. This year, the National Holstein Convention will be held in Washington state, so let’s work hard to get the very best of Illinois out west! Finally, remember if you were sold in the worker auction at state show, be sure to contact your buyer and do your work! If we want to do the worker auction as a fundraiser again, it’s important that we have buyers with good experiences with their workers! I wish everyone a safe and enjoyable winter, and I’ll see you all at Spring Thing!

Snow has fallen and temperatures continue to drop...yes, winter is here to stay! Thank you to all of those that work tirelessly outside this time of year to keep their Holstein cows happy! There are some very exciting Illinois Holstein events coming up in the next couple of months. I hope you are able to take a day or two away from the farm to join us at Committee Meetings, Senior Convention and Spring Thing! It’s never too early to “think spring!” The Spring Herald will also be a Midwest Holsteins issue. Ad reservations and district news are due by February 5th.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
