THE DOMINANCE CONTINUES

Dairy judging is strong at the University of Minnesota, so strong that its teams have placed first overall in five of the six major contests in 2015 and 2016 held at: the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). The team was 2nd (to the University of Kentucky) at Harrisburg in 2016, but placed 1st in reasons by a 16-point margin in that contest. Furthermore, over the past 7 years in these 3 contests, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st overall in 11 of the 21 contests. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you’re considering a career in dairy, CONSIDER THE U OF M. In addition to our highly successful judging teams, you can be part of the Gopher Dairy Club, where more than 100 student members gain experience and industry contacts through activities like an all-expense-paid 11-day trip to California in January for seniors. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu.

MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2017 - 9

31st Annual WHA Futurity Twelve bovine beauties graced the shavings at the Wisconsin State Fair Park on Saturday, August 12th to compete for the title of first place in the 31st Annual Wisconsin Holstein Futurity. Judging this prestigious event was Jerome Meyer of Sun Prairie, Wis. In this non-traditional show, the animals are entered three years prior to the show and only the best of the entries compete for the title of Futurity Champion. This year, the coveted title was captured by Ryan-Vu Chelios Mocha, owned by Ryan-Vu Holsteins and shown by Amy Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wis. The Ryan family received $1500 from our generous sponsor, Compeer Financial. Mocha was also named Best Udder of the show, first place Bred and Owned animal, Top Milk Production winner and the Top Fat and Protein Production winner. Following closely in second was Ryan-Vu GChip Claudette-ET, exhibited by Joseph Opsal of Blue Mounds, Wis. Claudette won a $750 check from International Protein Sires. Joseph and Claudette also received the first place junior award and $50, sponsored by Angela Davis Brown of Ma-Brown Holsteins and Jerseys, and the Best Dressed Junior award and $100 sponsored by Dean and Leslie Frisle of Frisle-Vu Holsteins. In third place was Miss Oeh-My Atwood Veida-ET, owned by Jenna Langer and Joel Kietzman. Agropur presented third place with a check for $500. Even though the bovine beauties are truly looking their best, the exhibitors are dressed to impress. These exhibitors gave up their white jeans and boots for a night of ball gowns and tuxedos to compete for the Best Dressed awards. All the exhibitors were looking their best and wowed the crowd. Brett Hildebrandt of Hustisford, Wis., received the Best Dressed Male award and $100 from Indianhead Holsteins. The Best Dressed Female of the night went to Courtney Ewert of Hustisford, Wis., along with $100 sponsored by Scenic-Edge Holsteins. The night was led by the Mistresses of Ceremonies, Ann O’Leary and Kristin Olson, who introduced distinguished guests and the bovine beauties. The distinguished guests included Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Courtney Moser; Wisconsin Holstein Association Princess Attendant Kelsey Cramer; Alice in Dairyland Crystal Siemers-Peterman; Wisconsin Fairest of the Fairs Rebecca Starkenburg; Wisconsin Secretary of Ag Ben Brancel; Dawn Haag representing sponsor Compeer Financial; Ron Sersland for sponsor International Protein sires; and Dave Hitner for sponsor Agropur. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity is a very unique show with a unique mission. The Wisconsin Holstein Association uses the futurity to help promote the dairy industry to the general public and display the first class care we provide our animals and dedication that we have for our animals and the products they produce. The Wisconsin Holstein Association Futurity was started to inform consumers about the dairy industry and Registered Holsteins. The 31st Wisconsin Holstein Association futurity would not be possible without our generous sponsors. The Wisconsin Holstein Association would like to thank the major futurity sponsors, Compeer Financial, International Protein Sires, Agropur, and Brian Greenman, Rural Mutual Insurance Agent, for helping to 10 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Fall 2017
