UNMATCHED DOMINANCE!

Dairy cattle judging is strong at the University of Minnesota,

so strong that its teams have placed 1st overall in 8 of the 15 contests held over the past 5 years at the All-American Dairy Show (Harrisburg, PA), the North American International Livestock Exposition (Louisville, KY), and World Dairy Expo (Madison, WI). Also, the University of Minnesota has placed 1st or 2nd overall in 20 of the 30 contests in these 3 contests over the past 10 years. No other university comes close to this incredible record of success. If you want a career in the dairy industry, consider the University of Minnesota. In addition to participating in our highly successful dairy judging and dairy challenge

programs, you can join the Gopher Dairy Club, whose student members gain experience and industry contacts through many activities such as an all-expense-paid 10-day senior trip to California in January. Both inside and outside the classroom, our dairy professors make teaching and working with students their top priority. Learn more today at ansci.umn.edu

Iowa Holstein Association MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2020 - 11

Registered Holstein breeders honored at 2020 Wisconsin Holstein Convention The Wisconsin Holstein Association (WHA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 Distinguished Holstein Breeder and Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder awards. Trent and Kelsey Hendrickson, Blanchardville, were recognized as the Distinguished Young Holstein Breeders while the team of Emerald Acres (Paul and Debbie Ossmann, Ted and Lana Ossman, Don and Joyce Ossmann) and Dr. Scott Armbrust, De Pere, were honored as the Distinguished Holstein Breeder. Award recipients were recognized at the 2020 Wisconsin Holstein Convention banquet on February 22 at the Radisson Hotel, Fond du Lac.

Trent and Kelsey Hendrickson - 2019 Wisconsin Holstein Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder

Show. Dynasty’s red sister, Trent-Way Des Dynamite-Red EX-93, was first place aged cow at the 2018 Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show and was also the Reserve Senior Champion and Honorable Mention Grand Champion. The Trent-Way herd has a rolling herd average (RHA) of 25,219 with 3.82% fat and 3.15% protein. Through their breeding selections the couple’s goal is to increase their RHA and fat and protein production. Their current BAA (Breed Age Average) is 109.5. Trent and Kelsey met while attending UW-Platteville and are parents to two-year-old son Trevor. They farm with one-full time employee and a few part-time employees. In addition to farming, Kelsey works off the farm. The Distinguished Young Holstein Breeder award honors a WHA Registered Holstein breeder under the age of 40 who has excelled in their breeding program as well as community involvement and farming practices. Candidates submit an application that is judged by a panel of past award winners.

Ossmann Family and Dr. Scott Armbrust – 2019 Wisconsin Holstein Distinguished Holstein Breeder

Trent and Kelsey Hendrickson with son Trevor.

Registered Holsteins are a passion for both Trent and Kelsey Hendrickson, who started their Trent-Way Genetics herd with just 20 cows and a partnership with Registered Holstein breeder Dave Erickson in 2011. Today, the couple milks 235 cows in Blanchardville. Upon assuming ownership of the dairy roughly a year ago, the Hendricksons built a freestall barn to expand the milking herd with their next goal to build heifer and dry cow facilities. The breeding focus at Trent-Way Genetics is high type animals that are very functional with good production for all dairying styles. To reach this goal, Trent and Kelsey use tools like classification, genetic testing, and milk testing to make management and breeding decisions. Trent and Kelsey currently use the top 10 percent of their herd to continue growth and development of future generations with the remaining animals used as recipients for IVF/ET calves. The top 10 percent include animals that are high-type, show choice or high genomic females in the red or red carrier selection. With these decisions, Trent-Way has put four bulls into stud and at one time their bull, Trent-Way-JS Ronald-ET, was the number one red carrier bull in the U.S. Breeding and working with show animals is a goal the couple share. A shining moment for them was when Jeffrey-Way Advent Dynasty, EX-95, claimed the secondplace spot in the 5-year-old class of the 2015 International Holstein 12 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2020

Theo, Lana, Paul, Debbie, Don and Joyce Ossmann. Photo by Karen Rockey

Paul and Debbie Ossmann, Ted and Lana Ossman, Don and Joyce Ossmann, from Emerald Acres, and Dr. Scott Armbrust, De Pere, have bred and worked with a number of high-profile cow families while focusing on cows with high production, components and characteristics like feet and legs and udders. Over the years, Emerald Acres has grown from within through strategic breeding from a number of purchases. With this, the herd was able to transform into a high type and production herd. The herd is classified regularly and has been since 1977. Throughout this time, the group has bred 87 Excellent females, 10 Excellent males, 25 multiple “E” females and has had 304 animals produce more than 100,000 pounds of lifetime milk. The nearly 500-cow herd at Emerald Acres has an RHA of 27,518 pounds of milk, 1263 pounds of fat, 4.6 percent fat, 882 pounds of protein and 3.2 percent protein. Milkmaid Clover Monica-TW was the first Registered Holstein

to step foot at Emerald Acres and was purchased by Paul when he was 12 years old. Monica’s impact on the dairy was vast but Emerald-AcresV-R Della, EXScott and Nancy Armbrust 90, was the first cow in the nation to make more than 1000 pounds of protein in a single record and she also put three sons into AI. The cow most prominent at Emerald Acres and around the globe was Ripvalley NA Bell Tammy, EX-942E DOM GMD. Since 1988, 1500 descendants of Tammy have been born at Emerald Acres.

Some of Tammy’s most well-known sons include Curtmaid Emerald Target, Emerald-Acr-SA Tonic, Emerald-Acr-SA Tribute, Trump (Japan), Emerald-AcrSA Techniq, Mulatte (Germany) and Emerald-Acr-SA Titan. Another notable descendant is Emerald-Acr-SA T Baxter, a Blitz son x VG-87 Mtoto x EX Mandel x Emerald-Acr-SA Tulip EX-94, a granddaughter of Tammy. Both Tammy and Baxter were inducted into the Wisconsin Holstein Association’s Wall of Fame in 2018. Emerald Acres has worked with a number of other notable cows including Kuipercrest Valiant Ann-ET, EX-91 DOM; Fisher-Heights Elton Crown, VG-88 GMD DOM; and Mayerlane-SA Bwm MistyET, EX-94-3E GMD DOM. The Ossmanns’ and Dr. Armbrust’s Emerald-Acres-SA breeding from cows like these has reached across the nation and around the world through their sons and daughters alike. The Distinguished Holstein Breeder is chosen by the Wisconsin Holstein Association board of directors from applications submitted through nomination or by breeders themselves. DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Boyd Schaufelberger has had a passion for Registered Holsteins his entire life. His Registered Holstein journey began on the home farm, Schaufine Farms. The farm was started by his parents in 1945. In 1965, the herd began registering animals under the Schaufine prefix, and by 1975 the farm became fully registered. Boyd, and wife Sandy, purchased the farm in 1981. Along with their two daughters, Erin and Amy, the family enjoyed exhibiting cattle at local state and national shows and staying active in the dairy industry. In 2016, the Schaufine herd was dispersed. Because of his active involvement and strong leadership, Boyd was a familiar face at Holstein events for many years. As a result, The Legacy Showcase at Schaufine Farms drew a great crowd of Registered Holstein enthusiasts from across the country. Boyd reflected at the sale that the real blessing of his family’s involvement in the dairy industry has been the people. For him, they are what makes the business interesting and rewarding. The sale was a testament to Boyd’s legacy as a great cowman and was considered a great success. At the time of the dispersal, the herd of 120 cows had a rolling herd average of 26,565#, 3.6F 966# 3.0P 803# with a BAA of 109.2. Boyd’s dedication to the Holstein Association on the local, state and national level has been exemplary. From serving as the announcer for the open show at the State Holstein Show to supporting State and club Holstein sales, he is always willing to lend a hand when called upon. Boyd has also taken on several leadership roles and been an integral part of the Illinois Holstein Association. He has served as state sale chair, publications chair, legislative affair chair, been a Director for six years and served on the Executive Committee for three years. He was also honored with the dedication of the 2014 IL State Championship Show, 2014 IL Senior Breeder Award and 1994 IL Junior Breeder Award. Most notably, he recently completed his ten-year tenure on the Holstein USA Board of Directors. Boyd fulfilled two terms as a National Director, and he served on the Executive Committee, Legislative Affairs Committee, Genetic Advancement Committee and Audit Committee. He also served as Vice President from 2015-2017 and recently completed his 26 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2020

term as President. Outside of the Holstein Association, Boyd has been involved on the Illinois DHIA board, Dairy Lab Services board, Prairie State Select Sires board, the Select Sires Holstein Sire Committee and Prairie Farms dairy cooperative board. Boyd is also actively involved in the Greenville First Christian Church and helps out with many FFA and 4-H events. Throughout Boyd’s decades of involvement in the dairy industry, he has seen a lot of change. He is a life-long learner committed to staying current on changing dairy industry economics and technology. As a director of a member organization, he believes you should always keep the interests of the members at the forefront of every decision. Not only does Boyd embrace opportunities to serve, he also encourages others to be involved. In his retiring address at the 2019 National Holstein Convention, he challenged Holstein USA members to think about your legacy with the association and your role to help with the challenges we face. A life of dedication to the farm and makes for a long list of accomplishments, but his greatest accomplishment is his family. They have two daughters – Erin Davis, who along with husband Kris, have four children: Lydia, Daniel, Sarah and Isaiah. They reside in central Illinois, and they enjoy visiting the farm and exhibiting calves at the Gateway District Show and Bond County Fair. Daughter Amy, and husband Brad Hoover, and their son Brock live and farm in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Boyd continues to own cows in partnership with Brad and Amy and exhibits cattle in Pennsylvania and at World Dairy Expo. Congratulations Boyd on receiving the 2019 Illinois Holstein Service Award!

SENIOR BREEDER AWARD

Brothers Don and Larry Gueldener have been farming together for forty years. While growing up on their family’s dairy farm, the pair would wake up at 5am to milk and do chores before they would go to school. They credit their parents with instilling in them a strong work ethic and the mindset that hard work and doing things right would pay-off with a successful future. Year-over-year Don and Larry made breeding and management decisions to help improve the herd. In 1980, when Larry graduated, they began using A.I. sires and purchasing Registered Holstein calves at the Highland Calf Sale, PDCA Calf Sale, Clinton County Classic and a few local dispersals. In 1990, they started DHIA testing and classifying. They garnered interest from bull studs for their homebred high production cow, Gueldener Elton Elita VG-87 GMD DOM with a top record of 5-02 2x 365d 39730m 3.8 1518F 2.9 1139P. Don and Larry sent sons to A.I. studs including Alta Genetics, Select Sires and ABS. After fulfilling the bull contracts, Don and Larry flushed Elita to high type bulls Ked Juror and Second-Look Jolt. The resulting calves solidified their breeding philosophy for a balance of high production and high type. Don and Larry bred for enough strength and width in their cows so that they could withstand high production and still be bred back on time.

Association Awards

Larry and Don Gueldener were presented with the 2019 Illinois Holstein Senior Breeder Award

Jim Schluter was presented with the 2019 Illinois Holstein Junior Breeder Award from Sarah Butler

Over the next twenty years, the brothers would work with Ron Debatin to make a couple of strategic purchases that would become the foundation of the herd. These cows include Granada Highlight Sharon VG-88 GMD DOM, Brite-Side Gibson Emme-ET EX-90 2E with lifetime milk production of 109,570 and C-Of-O Durham Countess EX-92 2E with three, five- and seven-year-old records all over 37,000 of milk. These three cows were flushed extensively, and by 2010 most of the herd could be traced back to these cow families. They continued to purchase some good pedigreed heifers at local sales, always looking to improve the herd. As a result of using sexed semen on heifers and top-tier cows, they have also sold animals and supported Illinois Holstein sales. Since 2017, they have sold 50+ milking cows and 50+ springing heifers to local dairymen. Don and Larry are focused working with good pedigreed Registered Holsteins and providing them high-quality feed and care to help them reach their potential. The duo says nothing makes them smile more than seeing a young 2-year-old calve with a beautiful udder and continue to improve production up to 80, 90, or even 100 pounds per day. They strive for these cows to mature into a high producing cow that lasts a long time. Today, our senior breeder award recipients have bred 72 Excellent cows, 10 Dam of Merits and 10 Gold Medal Dams. Gueldeners would like to thank the many friends who have helped guide them with their purchases and breeding decisions, especially Ron Debatin. They state, “his trust in us gave us confidence that we were doing things right and encouraged us to continue to breed better cows.” The family is currently preparing for their herd dispersal on Friday, March 13. Reflecting on their family’s time breeding and milking Registered Holsteins, they are impressed with the progress of the breed and the progress they were able to achieve in forty years. Following the dispersal, Gueldeners will focus on helping the next generation of the family with their farming and trucking businesses – Gueldener Grain and Gueldener Trucking. They hope to help their children grow their businesses the same as their parents provided them with the opportunity to dairy farm. Congratulations Don and Larry on receiving the 2019 Illinois Senior Breeder Award, and the Illinois Holstein Association wishes you a successful sale.

JUNIOR BREEDER AWARD

Jim has been surrounded by the Holstein cow his entire life. After being raised on his family’s dairy farm, he began his career as a herdsman. Opportunity took him to several different farms in the Midwest before he returned to his home state, Illinois. Since 2009, Jim has been the herdsman at Westridge Dairy, a 1,000-cow herd in Red Bud. In addition to his work as a herdsman, Jim has a passion for acquiring, breeding and exhibiting elite Holsteins. For Jim, it’s a family endeavor whether at the local county fair or a national show. Jim’s interest in Registered Red and White Holsteins began a decade ago with the purchase of Helmcrest Destry Sarha Lee-Red. She had

Thank you to the Butler Family of Bluff-Ridge Holsteins for sponsoring the Distinguished Service, Senior Breeder and Junior Breeder Awards in memory of Bob Butler!

gotten the family’s attention after she placed first in the fall calf class and garnered Reserve Junior Champion honors at the 2011 New York Spring Red and White Show. They recognized her potential to develop into a foundation cow for the family. Today, daughters of Helmcrest Destry Sarha Lee-Red can be found coast-to-coast. In addition to receiving champion honors at national shows, two have been scored Excellent and three have been nominated All-American. Not only did Sarha Lee produce beautiful daughters (by sires including Mr D Apple Diamondback*RC, Scientific B Defiant-ET*RC, Apples Absolute-Red-ET and Luck-E Awesome-Red) for the Schulter family to develop and merchandise, she also produced records of 2-06 2x 365d 28,429 4.0F 1135 3.2P 922 and 4-03 3x 305d 30,460 4.3F 1307 3.1P 954. According to the family, Sarha Lee’s best daughter still resides in Illinois (and has Illinois breeding on both sides of her pedigree). Schluter Shelby Lee-Red EX-92 is a Luck-E Awesome-Red daughter of Sarha Lee. In 2018, Shelby Lee had a successful run as a Senior 2-Year-Old which kicked-off at the Midwest National Spring Show where she stood first in her class and went on to be named Intermediate and Honorable Mention Grand Champion of the Red and White Show. At the Illinois State Holstein Show, Shelby Lee continued her success amongst both black and red Holsteins. She placed first in her class and was named Intermediate Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and Best Bred and Owned of the Holstein show. Following the show, she was purchased by Dennis and Keith Engel and placed second in the International Red and White Holstein Show at World Dairy Expo. In recognition of her successful year, Schluter Shelby Lee was named Res. All-American and 2018 Illinois Holstein of the Year. Another exciting Red and White acquisition for Jim and his family has been Hilrose DB Allie-Red. She not only stood out to the family inperson at the 2017 Quest for Success sale, but also had an appealing pedigree as she is backed by ten generations of Excellent cows. Allie had a successful show career as a summer yearling and Junior 2-Year-Old and has developed into an exciting young cow, now scored VG-89 EXMAM. Today, Jim and his family are eager to work with her daughters. This includes Schluter Unstop Aspen-Red-ET. Aspen had a successful fall finishing first in a deep class of twenty-six winter calves at the International Red and White Show at World Dairy Expo. She went on to be named Honorable Mention Junior Champion. The following month, Aspen traveled to the Mid-East Fall National Red and White Show where she won the winter calf class and was named Junior Champion. Aspen is an early daughter of the up-and-coming Riverdown Unstopabull-Red. In fact, following her successful year in the show ring, Aspen became the featured daughter in advertising for the bull. She was recently named AllAmerican and Reserve Junior All-American winter calf winter calf. Jim has been a strong supporter of Illinois Holstein sales by consigning daughters from his best cow families. Jim is a member of the MississippiValley club and currently serving on the Illinois Holstein Association Board of Directors. Congratulations Jim on receiving the 2019 Illinois Junior Breeder Award! MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2020 - 31

Iowa Holstein Association Awards Distinguished Service Award Leon Sigwarth, Holy Cross

Leon grew up on a farm milking Guernseys by hand and selling the cream. In 1955 when he was 15 years old, the family purchased their first milking machine. Leon and Laura were married in 1963 and then moved down the road and rented a farm which had some good Holsteins and sold Grade A milk. But after three years, Leon and Laura returned to the home farm and began a partnership with his brother, Joe and his wife, Belle. Along with increasing their milking herd, they also added more land. Joe went to AI school and one of the monks from New Melleray Abbey was also taking the course. So when the Abbey decided to disperse their herd, Leon and Joe purchased three of their registered Holstein cows. Then Leon attended a Holstein sale in Waukon and purchased another registered Holstein where he met Paul Schneider who then introduced him to other Holstein breeders - Dick Lomen, Vernice Moon and Ralph Lyons, just to name a few. Also a Brown Swiss breeder, Larry Kruse and his family helped us. Leon and Joe chose the prefix Jol-Lee for their herd which became well-known for outstanding production and type along with superior genetics. Two of their premier cows were world renowned, Jol-Lee Mark Celeste and Miss Mark Maui. Jol-Lee Mark Celeste EX-91-3E produced over 365,000 pounds of milk in her lifetime. When she completed her 6-10 record of 57,070 3.9% 2224 2.8% 1603 in 365 days, Celeste ranked 2nd in Milk, 4th for Fat and 5th for Protein in the nation, and in Iowa, she was 1st for Milk and Fat and 2nd for Protein. Miss Mark Maui EX-95 was the 1994 All-American Junior Two-Year-Old. Maui has produced over 40 Excellent offspring in their herd alone. Leon and Joe exhibited at the district, state and national levels throughout the years winning numerous All-Iowa and Reserve AllIowa Awards. Maui had tremendous success at the World Dairy Expo and was named Grand Champion at the Minnesota State Fair two times. With a 125 year old barn that was added on 7 times, Leon and Joe decided they either needed to build a new one or make another change. Being the older brother, Leon, decided to seek work part-time off the farm and gradually the partnership was dissolved between Leon and Joe. Joe dispersed the herd in 2013. Even though, Leon did not have a high school education, it did not pose any problem for him finding employment. For 2 1/2 years, he was a farm counsultant for Hawkeye Bank in Dubuque which later was bought out and became Mercantile Bank. During 32 - MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2020

this time, Leon also took classes for 3 semesters at NICC excelling in his classes except for his computer class. His advice is please do not ask him for help with technology. For another 3 years, he was a farm consultant for Kalmia Consulting followed by working for 10 years in ag real estate before his retirement. His Holstein activities are highlighted by serving as Co-Chair of the 2001 National Holstein Convention, a director on the Iowa Holstein Association Board, chairman of the Program Development Committee along with serving on various standing committees and being active in District 8. Leon also has represented Iowa as a National Holstein Convention delegate. He served as president and as a director on the Prairie State/Select Sires Board and as a director on the Select Sires board. Leon is a member of Saint Francis Catholic Church, Balltown, and is involved with Christian Experience Weekends. For the past 3 years, Leon has volunteered with Hospice of Dubuque calling on hospice patients providing some humor along with showing care and concern while visiting with them. He says that this has been a very eye-opening, faith-building experience. Leon and Laura have 8 children, 18 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. Leon commented that not only has Iowa developed some great Holsteins, but the Iowa Holstein Association membership has some great people which becomes like family developing a camaraderie amongst them which helps you become a better person. His advice to the current trend with larger farms and more technology is for the smaller farms to develop a niche market for selling registered Holsteins so we don’t continue to lose our good, young people.

Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder Award Chad & Erin Hunt, Elkader

Both of these two individuals were born and raised with the love of Registered Holsteins running through their blood. Chad grew up on his family farm near Hopkinton which consisted of a 114 cow tie-stall barn. If you asked anybody who knew Chad when he was a little boy and growing up, they would tell you he was destined to be a farmer. When he was nowhere to be found, you could count on finding him in the barn strategically placing and tying his cows up with twine that he snuck from his toy box. He was active in 4-H and a member of the Maquoketa Valley FFA. In 1995 he was the reserve champion showman at the World Dairy Expo. In 1996, his FFA dairy judging team took 2nd place at the World Dairy Expo where Chad was the 1st place individual. Chad enjoyed showing cattle at the Delaware County Fair and District 8 shows. He purchased his first registered heifer, Morningview Mason Megan from the 1998 Iowa Spring Sale. After graduating from high school in 1998, he attended Northeast Iowa Community College where he received his Associate of Applied Science degree in Dairy Science. He then returned to the family farm where he took on the responsibility of herdsman and did all the mating and breeding of the herd. To assist in growing his own herd, he then purchased Morningview Emerson Push-UP-ET that produced many embryos and 2 bulls sent into A.I. Erin was raised on a 475 acre farm with a 60 tie-stall barn of registered Holsteins just west of Elkader. She could always be found outside amongst the cows making sure they were all cared for and things were clean. She was also active in 4-H, Central FFA chapter, state and national Holstein member where she held multiple officer positions. Since Erin was the only “dairy person” in her FFA chapter, there was no dairy judging contest. She turned to individual contest such as the FFA Creed where she received gold at sub-districts and districts, Silver at the State FFA convention and went on to receive Silver at Nationals. Erin enjoyed showing cattle at the Clayton County Fair, District 1 Shows, State Junior Show and the Iowa Youth Classic where many champions were shown and showmanship honors were earned. She was crowned the 1998-1999 District 1 Holstein Princess and alternate Clayton County Dairy Princess. Upon graduating from high school in 2000, she attended Northeast Iowa Community College where she received her Associate of Applied Science degree in Dairy Science and Veterinary Technician. In the fall of 2002, she accepted a job in pharmaceutical sales with Lextron Animal Health which was the second largest distributor in the U.S. with headquarters in Greeley, Colorado and regional office in Manchester, Iowa. Here is where their story together begins. After a long week of sales meetings for Erin and the rest of the sales team, it was a ritual to have supper at one of the local favorites in Manchester before parting ways. As Erin was walking out the door, she caught a glimpse of her friend, Adam, and a guy that looked like Chad sitting next to him. Long story short, Chad asked Erin on a first date for the following weekend and the rest is history. In September 2005, the two married. Chad continued to farm with his parents while Erin worked in pharmaceutical sales traveling the U.S. working with dairies, veterinarians and corporate accounts. Chad took a position as feed mill manager at Triangle Ag, Monticello in 2007 and also milked for Scott Coons, Coon-Ridge Holsteins. It was an emotional and difficult time, Erin’s father was diagnosed with cancer and after 47 years of milking cows, Erin’s

parents, George and Joyce Kuehl, decided to retire. In 2009, they had the opportunity to buy the springing heifers from Erin’s parents and were blessed to have a great friend like Scott who took the heifers in where Chad could care for them and calve them in. The calves were brought back to Erin’s parents’ and her dad would feed and take care of them. The couple’s herd was growing quickly. They realized Erin’s parents had a plan wanting someone to take the family farm over and have cows milking in the barn. On July 18, 2011, never in Erin’s wildest dreams did she think she would be looking at an awesome herd of cows to buy on her 30th birthday. Chad and Erin were greeted by beautiful registered Holsteins of John Grafenberg’s. It was a great day, they told John to mark them sold and Erin’s birthday present was 30 cows. They then traveled to Bill and Lana Streins’ where they also bought 23 head. On August 4, the cows were all brought to the farm and they started their journey together as sole owners of their own herd, Hunt-Haven Holsteins. In 2013, after 11 years in pharmaceutical sales, Erin started working full-time by Chad’s side and enjoying time with her dad until his passing in 2015. The herd’s current BAA is 106.9. The herd averages 25,545M 2X milking with 955 (3.9%) F, 802 (3.1%) P. Their breeding program focuses on longevity and type by improving feet/legs, udders without sacrificing milk and components. Some of their favorite bulls are Doorman, Meridian, Jordy, Golden Dreams, Atmosphere and Atwood. The couple has been recognized for numerous awards: 2014 Clayton County Outstanding Young Dairy Producer, 2016 Northeast Iowa Community College Outstanding Alumni, 2018 District 1 Outstanding Young Holstein Breeder, superior milk quality awards every year from DFA, production rosettes for being above state average and added 9 cows into the 200,000 lifetime production club. They are active in the Clayton County Dairy Promotion where Erin is now secretary, and Clayton Co. Holstein Breeders where Chad is a director and Erin serves as secretary. Chad and Erin are the proud parents of two children, Blake (10) and Kayla (7) where they are members of 4-H and are Iowa Junior Holstein members. The family enjoys spending their free time attending sales and shows. Blake and Kayla have their own herds started and have learned a lot of responsibility and work ethic from living on the farm. They both have been in the show ring since they were 3 years old and are following in their parents’ footsteps when it comes to showmanship competitions. They give credit to their parents, family and “dairy” friends for all their help, support and guidance through their journey. Thank you. MIDWEST HOLSTEINS, Spring 2020 - 33
