SPRINKLE YOUR LIFE WITH HAPPINESS AND THROW ON YOUR PARTY DRESS – YOU DESERVE A CELEBRATION FOR THE AMAZING WOMAN THAT YOU ARE! @ilikeherstylevancouver

N OT E F R O M T H E E D I T O R S

MUCH TO CELEBRATE Pop the corks and cue the confetti… this is the Celebrations Issue! Truth be told, our celebrations started as little girls and they are still going strong! As longtime friends, growing up together (even at times when our lives took us in different directions) there have always been certain traditions and celebrations that stood strong. Christmas and birthdays were at the top of our list for celebrating together throughout the years. Recently, the celebrations have reached new heights with the launch of our premiere issue of I Like Her Style Vancouver… and they haven’t stopped yet! It feels like an all-day soirée, celebrating worthy women and businesses in our media reach. The buzz from our two launch parties is still vibrating through our souls! In January, we hosted a Media Launch in partnership with Coast by Glowbal Group. In February, we continued the festivities with our Celebration Brunch hosted at S+L Kitchen & Bar by Joseph Richard Group. Cheers to all who shared in the excitement! To put it simply, we are having a ball and we’ve learned a thing or two about event planning along the way, too! 1. A well-prepared hostess or event planner will create an itinerary for the party and then be prepared for nothing to go as planned! 2. Always give yourself a few extra hours for prep at the venue. If you're ready ahead of time – great! Just pop a bottle and get the party started! 3. Just add glitter! Fun details are always sure to leave a lasting impression. (Psst! They'll out-sparkle any mishaps that happen along the way!) 4. If you can’t do it – there’s somebody who can! We are blessed to be surrounded by so many local, talented businesses that can add the perfect touches to your big day. (Stress less, party girl!) 5. Social media is your VIP. Get your pinterest fired up, your instagram finger scrolling, and create a facebook event page to spread the word! Social media can double as your party planner and best promoter! Wrapped up in the pages of this magazine, is a mini party in itself. We're featuring some of the Vancouver Celebration Scene’s top women – sharing their stories, workspaces, and tips! We invite you to have your cake, and read this too! We hope that the celebratory spirit jumps off of the pages and into your day! Oh, and stay tuned as more event plans unfold from the I Like Her Style Vancouver girls! XO 6

We asked 4 of the Lower Mainland's Favourite Digital Influencers...

what is your most memorable

CELEBRATION? My most memorable celebration has to be the Dare to Dream Soiree that I hosted last November 2016. It was a celebration organized to acknowledge the dreambuilders in our city, all in the spirit of giving back to a local organization, Raw Beauty Talks. This was a memorable evening for me because it reaffirmed my purpose and my passion for empowering and inspiring women. It marked the day when I realized my contribution to community and how fulfilling it is to build a dream that is focused around leaving a legacy. Everyday since has become a celebration - I never felt more alive and excited about living my Dream!

My most memorable celebration is the day I married my husband. The day was truly impalpable. In so many ways it also felt like a celebration of how far we came despite having our first-born daughter at a young age. 15 years later my husband and I are still together and this year we celebrate a decade of marriage. In short, life isn't meant to be perfect, and we will never have it all figured out. I feel blessed I've found someone I can "figure things out" with every single day while raising three daughters. Now that's something worth celebrating!

Jamie Khau @styling_the_inside_

Genicca Whitney @_badassladyboss

The moment that I realized that I had a body worthy enough to celebrate was by far the most memorable moment for me. For years, I thought that because I didn’t fit the mold of what society deems as beautiful that I didn’t have the right to feel good in my body. Now I know that I am achingly fabulous and my body does SO many incredible things for me aside from looking pretty. For example; breathing, taking me exciting places, letting me hug my friends and the most joyful thing ever, dancing. My top body celebration was posting a video of me dancing in my underwear to Instagram for the campaign #donthatetheshake.

Victoria Welsby @bampowlife

A celebration that stands out to me is my 28th birthday. Around this time, I experienced my Saturn Return. If you’re not familiar with this, it is an astrological transit that occurs when the planet Saturn returns to the same place in the sky that it occupied at the moment of a person’s birth. Although this happens around the age 29/30, the influence of the Saturn return happens around age 27/28. This was a pivotal year in my life full of many changes, advances, setbacks and new beginnings. When it comes to birthday celebrations, I usually keep it low key. However, my 28th deserved something more. I surrounded myself with just over 80 of my closest friends & their friends throughout the evening of Thursday, May14th 2015. It was the perfect celebration of my birthday and introduction to my Saturn Return. I’m coming up to my 30th birthday this year so I think it will be a memorable one!

TESSA SAM TURNED HER LIFELONG LOVE FOR BAKING INTO AN INSPIRING BUSINESS WITH A BOOK ON THE WAY.

IN THE KITCHEN WITH SWEET BAKE SHOP’S

TessaSam

Born in Vancouver, Tessa Sam grew up in a small town on the west coast of Vancouver Island. With parents who baked solely from scratch, it’s little surprise that Tessa began her baking career as a toddler. Today, Tessa has built an impressive baking empire with a vast, global following through social media. She’s attempting to ‘push the boundaries of modern baking’, and we’re celebrating her sweet success!

“I’ve always loved being in the kitchen, but I’ve also always loved to talk, which led me to broadcasting school and eventually landed me a job in radio. I found myself unhappy there, though, and left to pursue sweeter things.”

Creating the book has been surreal. Some days are amazing! Other days, I have writers’ block and I find myself in tears over a failed cake recipe – which is crazy because who cries over cake?! To say it’s been an emotional journey is an understatement, but it’s also been a dream to have the opportunity to share my recipes with fellow bakers and dessert-lovers!

In 2010, with a career change in the midst, Tessa immersed herself in her true love – baking. Creating treats for friends and family soon turned into the creation of a website. Customer orders began to trickle in via email, and the rest is history! Along with baking, Tessa enjoys expressing her creativity through photography. Merging these two talents resulted in Tessa’s most perfect recipe yet! The launch of her @sweetbakeshop feed on Instagram was a game-changer. Her personally-captured baking photos have garnered world-wide attention, growing a staggering online following. “It has done wonders for my business”, Tessa Says. The opening of her beautiful Yaletown based bakery drew a crowd of loyal Sweet Bake Shop fans and customers until one day, Tessa received the message that many only dream of. “I had been thinking about writing a book for about a year and then one day, I was contacted by Penguin Random House after my now-editor found me on Instagram. Reading that message from her was an incredibly exciting and happy moment, not only because I wanted to write a book but because Penguin Random House is a very reputable publisher!” With a book-writing journey on the horizon, Tessa closed her shop in order to take the time to bake and create her book, which we’ll see on shelves early next year!

CONNECT ON SOCIAL @sweetbakeshop

A sneak peek at what ’s in the book!

“The recipes in the book are fun! I love a fancy, French dessert every now and then, but most often, I want something that I can bake with ease that everyone will enjoy… and be able to pronounce! I really wanted all of the ingredients in my recipes to be accessible to everyone – no strange, hard-to-find things – as well as make sure that the desserts and photos reflected my brand. Luckily, my editor and I were completely on the same page when it came to these things! Pretty desserts that taste good, too! You can expect lots of pink, pastels and sprinkles – very much like my social media feeds.”

Who inspires you? Oh, so many people! Like, almost every baker, though, Martha Stewart is at the top of the list – she’s often ahead of the trends and has fantastic taste. What characteristics do you admire in others? The ability to multi-task and how those with children are able to manage their businesses and still find the time to be creative while raising a family – so impressive! What else is new?

My style is feminine, clean and simple. I love pastels and pops of colour but never really go over-board on the details. This goes for both my baking style as well as my life outside of the kitchen.

I’ve been hosting baking and decorating workshops lately, which have been a lot of fun! I also take private dessert orders, share recipes on my blog and YouTube channel from time to time and host pop-up shops as well. Sweet Goals... I’d love to see multiple locations, multiple books and perhaps a tv show.

What’s your top value in life and business? To always follow through with what you say you’re going to do – that is so important to me. Where have you faced adversity or stumbled along the way? I’ve had to deal with trademark infringements as well as employees not being the right fit for the company and many, many other things. It’s never all smooth-sailing when you’re a business owner! Looking back on your career, what are some highlights that stand out in your memory where you felt like you had ‘made it’? Opening my bakery was definitely a highlight, but my book is the project that I’m most proud of to date. I’ve never had that “I’ve made it” moment, maybe because I believe that there is always room for improvement. What’s next for the business? Stay tuned! ;)

When it comes to baking, practice is the key to perfection. I think that so many people (myself included) tend to get frustrated when their desserts don’t look absolutely perfect the very first time they make them. Practicing and focusing on one dessert at a time really helps take your baking skills up a notch. 13

ONLINE About Plum Polka Dot Christina has always had a passion for creating. When she wasn’t working for a major Canadian retailer both at their stores and corporate office, she was often found creating handmade gifts for her friends and family. In 2014, Christina decided to take her decade of experience in customer service supply chain and project management — along with her creative passion — and launch Plum Polka Dot her own line of custom accessories and personalized hair tie party favors. A Vancouver native, Christina lives in Langley with her husband, twin eight-year-old boys and four-year-old daughter, who are the inspiration behind everything she creates. @plumpolkadot

Visit us at ilikeherstylevancouver.com for more photos and a complete list of the wom-entrepreneur’s sources.

This studio has been a game changer for me. I work much better in clean, clutter-free spaces so having a lot of hidden storage was imperative. I feel inspired when I’m in the space, which is very important as a creative entrepreneur! – Christina Crowe Christina launched Plum Polka Dot in 2014 and as it grew, she very quickly became aware that the small converted den off her entrance was not the ideal workspace. After brainstorming, it was decided that the best solution was to build an entirely new space in their basement. To kick off 2016, a contractor was hired and for the necessary attention to storage needs and detail, Amanda Fraser of Lily & Spice Interior’s help was enlisted! “We started by completing a questionnaire and then a site visit. I quickly fell in love with Christina’s space because it was a blank canvas”, explains Amanda. “Next we worked on sourcing the large items, then we worked on all of the intricate details – right down to the perfect notebook.” Amanda offers her services utilizing E-design, which allows her to work with clients near and far. “E-design made it convenient for both Christina and I because we’re both Mom Entrepreneurs with five kiddos between us.” Amanda’s curated design boards gave Christina visuals of Amanda’s vision which came to life in the form of this completely customized workspace. The finished studio is not only a collaboration between the two creatives, but it also includes a number of elements from fellow, local makers and entrepreneurs. “I cannot even describe the feeling of joy and calm it evokes when I walk into the room’, says Christina. “Being surrounded by the hard work of these amazing women provides a huge amount of inspiration while I work. They are not just beautiful items on display, but symbols of heart, tenacity and hustle”.

Studio Styling About Lily And Spice Interiors As a local creative, Amanda brings passion into design with her keen eye for details. Since she was a little girl Amanda has loved fashion and home decor, always thinking about how to improve esthetic and functionality. You can see some of her work featured on decor blogs around the world as far as Israel. Amanda is thrilled about her two most recent projects, Plum Polka Dot’s fresh home studio as well as an office design for Shelley McArthur Communications – a stunning space in Vancouver’s famous Gastown.

Amanda lives in the burbs with her husband and two young boys who ask regularly why everything in their home must be white! @lilyandspiceinteriors Working with renowned interior photographer, Tracey Ayton to capture the space was a highlight on this collaborative journey. “Natural lighting was limited so we called in the best in the biz!”

We decided to go with a mix of the shades from Christina’s brand palette and her favorite colors – aqua and gold! – Amanda Fraser on design details. 1. Showcasing Christina’s work was an important accent to our space. These hair tie party favors are a sample of the many beautiful products she creates! 2. This was my labour of love, I have a secret obsession with gallery walls! There are so many great print shops out there and I thought it would be a lovely way to accent the desk area. I especially like the air plant sconce we added from @handmadesammade - the perfect touch!

3. All. Of. It. This wall display unit was the right fit for our project as it added a whole other dimension to the space. Being that it shows off so many local treasures and was the ideal piece to go above the counter space below. 4. Who doesn’t love a little Lauren Conrad?! And what better way to share her book than between a set of bookends that look like this? I found these beauties at @homesensecanada and still wish that there were TWO sets of them, one for you, one for me right?!

About Tracey Ayton Tracey has been a successful photographer for over 25 years. She graduated at Langara College with her photography degree, shot weddings and portraits for 15 years and went on to be an interior and lifestyle photographer. You can see her work published in numerous national & international magazines and online articles including: Martha Stewart, Domain Home, Rue, Kinfolk, Canadian House and Home, Style At Home and the Globe and Mail. She is a fourth generation Vancouverite and much of her inspiration is drawn from the beach just steps from her home where she lives with her husband and their dog Frankie. @tracey_ayton 19

STEFANIE CHIES is a makeup and lash extension artist based in the Fraser Valley. She specializes in organic makeup application. Sweet Leilani Mascara Lashes are definitely one of my favourite features, so having lash extensions or mascara on is a must for me to make the eyes pop. One of my top mascaras comes from a local company based in Langley called Sweet Leilani. Her formula never seems to clump and stays put all day, and it is very water resistant as well. Elate Universal Creme Blush is another product I like to add for extra colour, the Elate Universal Creme also doubles as a lip colour for a fresh look that lasts all day. Both companies are non-toxic, cruelty free and vegan!

DIOR Addict Lip Glow “Another favourite not just for spring but all year round. This lip balm has SPF, makes my lips feel hydrated, and reacts with the natural pH of my skin for a customized lip colour!”

DUO BEHIND THE FUTURE MRS. PLANNER In 2015, Tanya and I realized there was a gap in the wedding planning paper market in Canada. Currently, it’s dominated by big named brands that focus mainly on functionality, and little on aesthetics. So, we created a contemporary option, complete with personalized cards, gift wrap, and detachable, motivational quotes that you can hang around your home as a keepsake.

. . . CONTINUED 1. Pick a date - The right date can impact your attendance. Will your event fall on a holiday or during a busy season? Once that’s set, refer to our planner’s monthly to daily task lists provided. Then, draft up your mock day-of timeline, so you can stay on track. 2. Pick a theme/style - The ambiance that you set for your event will represent your style and the atmosphere for your guests. Hop onto Pinterest and narrow your choices down to 2-3 themes. Next, consider the season to see which one is most appropriate (i.e. Beach wedding in winter? Maybe not!). 3. Guestlist - The amount of guests will translate to your overall budget for catering, decor, and venue size necessary to host your event. Consider any +1’s, send out invites early, and be prepared for last-minute RSVP’s. More of these tips can be found in our planner [shameless plug].

E V E N T

(And some ways our planner can help!)

4. Venue - Finding the perfect venue is essential, because it determines the flexibility of having fire-breathing acrobats or not (should probably check on that). A lot of venues offer in-house resources, so find out what exactly you will get with the rental. 5. Vendors - These are the masterminds that will bring your vision to life, so that you can relax. Refer to our detailed vendor and budgeting sheets, which will help you nail down the specifics of your expenditures and types of vendors that resonate with YOU.

WHAT ’S NEW ON THE HORIZON? We are excited to announce that our planners are now available through Chapters Indigo, making them easily accessible to Canadian brides! Next, Team Bride! We’ve launched new bridesmaid proposal boxes with thoughtfully curated self-care items for the big day. Coming soon, we’ll be rolling out our new bridesmaid planner, because being a bridesmaid is a LOT of work. We hope that our products will be cherished as memoirs of the planning journey for the most memorable day of our brides’ lives.

DIAMONDS What do you love most about what you do? I’m going to give you my top three, as there are so many! 1. Being a part of someone’s love story and creating something that represents their love. 2. Knowing that I control my own destiny in my business. 3. The look on a client’s face when they first see their piece of jewelry that I helped them create. What’s your next big goal? We are in the process of launching an online store and an amazing exclusive referral program. Two very big undertakings! What is one little known fact about you? I worked on live shopping television in Canada, England and Japan selling Korite Ammolite, our Canadian gemstone.

Claire Roy’s sparkling career journey began with work on cruise ships as a Professional Shopper in diamonds, gemstones and luxury brands. The duty free market in the Caribbean is known for some of the best jewelry shopping in the world, so when it was time for Claire to pick out her engagement ring, she realized that local stores just didn’t compare. Claire seized the opportunity to duplicate aspects of that exceptional market here in Canada. By offering an amazing client experience, great education, and an unlimited selection for the best pricing possible Boutique Diamonds was born.

What are you passionate about right now? In my personal life, I’m so excited to be the best mum and wife I can be to my family. With my business, I am so passionate about building brand awareness and working with my new franchise partner in the US.

CLAIRE'S DIAMOND 101

Life is busy for this passionate wife and a mother to eight-month-old daughter, Everly. She balances business, family and building a home as well! “I always dream big and believe that anything is possible!”

The main mistake people often make in purchasing diamond jewelry is not fully understanding what they are looking for when they comparison shop. Since diamond grading is subjective – you can have two diamonds in front of you that have the exact same grading but one actually can be a much better stone than the other. Understanding those nuances can make such a big difference with what you purchase in the end. This is why it is so important to work with someone knowledgeable and trustworthy that can educate you on the best stone for your budget.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned as an entrepreneur? Stay in your lane. I really believe as entrepreneurs we are dreamers and think outside the box. It’s so easy to have a million and one ideas, but it’s very important to stay focused on the core of your business.

Another mistake I see a lot is getting wrapped up in a setting. My suggestion would be to know what setting you want but make the diamond the top priority. At the end of the day, the diamond is the centerpiece of the ring. The setting enhances the beauty, but it is the center stone that makes the ring sparkle.

This past year, her love for fashion and zest for life led her to present her very own fashion collection at ECO Fashion Week Vancouver and ECO Fashion Week Seattle. Tetyana selected models of all sizes and ages. Her ethnic, Ukrainian-inspired garments landed her in the pages of Vogue Magazine as well. She is excited to have received invitations to participate in ECO Fashion Week Australia and New York Fashion Week. Tetyana believes that sharing her story has the power to inspire others. ON LIVING A COLORFILLED LIFE :

ON WOMEN IN BUSINESS: With a background in the print industry and a Master’s in Engineering, I’ve had an awesome career that grew from graphic design to planning and estimating for a multi-million dollar company. I owned a successful graphic design company for few years before opening a clothing boutique. Because of my illness, I had to sell it and take time to recover. Presently, I am CEO of Happy Lifestyle Inc. www.happylifestyleinc.com

This is my ‘Why’! I truly believe in living life to the fullest, having fun and spreading happiness in all aspects! We have a choice everyday as long as we are alive – boring or colourful, sad or happy. I choose happy! Happiness is not singular – it is plural. It’s meant to be shared with others. I try to make mine contagious!

ON FASHION & CULTURE:

ON HEALTH & WELLNESS:

Yes! Yes and Yes! Fashion is my passion. I love the craftsmanship of Couture and appreciate garments that are well-made. I had a fantastic 2016 – both as a fashion designer and as a curvy model! I created an Eco-Couture Collection which was presented at ECO Fashion Week Vancouver last Spring, catching the attention of Vogue, who published it as it showcased my Ukrainian ethnicity. I also presented at the Little Black Dress Gala and ECO Fashion Week Seattle. As a ‘plus size’ model, I walked the runways of both Canadian and American Fashion weeks, landed appearances in Vogue UK, and on July 3, 2016, I was crowned as Mrs. British Columbia for leadership and positivity.

As a person with limited abilities, I am trying to live a healthy lifestyle. I was given a second chance at life. 'The best brain tumor that I ever had' changed my life for better. Even though, I do not have full vision and live with chronic pain, I do manage to stay active and positive. The power of my thoughts takes over!

Blogger Codi Lynn of Creative Wife & Joyful Worker shares her tried and tested celebration styling tips from her sister’s baby shower.

let s’ celebrate, baby! I’ve always been interested in planning events and hosting parties, but it wasn’t until recently that I really started to follow that desire. With each new theme I get so excited with ideas and sourcing out the perfect vendors to contribute to bring these visions to life. After my sister Jolene had her second son, Arlo, I knew I wanted to do something to honour her. Her home is decorated in such beautiful earth tones with accents of precious gems, giving me the perfect theme to celebrate their newest “Little Gem”.

With a number of parties under my belt I have learned a few tricks. 1. Always plan for more time then you think. It takes about two hours from start to finish to set up a party like this. 2. Don’t do it alone. My sisters and my mom are usually always there willing to lend a helping hand. 3. Bring more than enough. Extra dishes, treats, tape, cutlery, chairs, etc... bring it all, it’s better to have too much then too little. 4. No more than three main colours. For consistency’s sake and ease of going overboard, keep the colour scheme simple. 5. Levels are your best friend. Adding different heights throughout the table is much more visually appealing. 6. Pack up everything the night before. I say this and I am still yet to actually accomplish it, but man would it make the day of easier. Party Hacks: Would you believe me if I told you... 1. The gold tassel backdrop is actually made of a dollar store table cover. 2. There are 4 dishes throughout the event that are being used upside down. 3. Underneath the brown furs on both sides of the cake are three VHS’s to create height. 4. Wall decals are used on the plates, cups, and guestbook to add consistency. 5. I use that same white cake stand for every party that I host!

DIVINE DÉCOR

MEET LILY AYALA Passionate, resilient, ambitious, visionary… these are just a few of the many power words that describe the uber talented owner of Divine Décor your event décor & floral destination. Lily Ayala considers herself ‘one lucky girl’, having had a childhood filled with happy memories from a supportive and close-knit family that has been with her every step of the way. Born in El Salvador, Lily's family chose Vancouver as home when she was just two years old. Lily is fiercely loyal and considers her friends and family a non-negotiable part of her life – they take priority above all else.

Today, Lily is a businesswoman who has so many ideas and aspirations that she can barely keep up with herself! She has become very passionate about building her business and embracing every little opportunity that comes her way. Divine Décor offers full service event decor for events of all kinds, including corporate functions, weddings, government events, charity galas, anniversaries, kids birthdays and proposals!

For Lily, creativity is key – both in her career and daily life. She believes this to be an essential quality for any business woman to possess – but especially one in the event décor industry. Many don’t realize that Lily had originally taken the LSAT and was planning to attend law school. In the end, she chose to embrace her creative side and to become an entrepreneur instead. Merging décor, floral, and event coordination under one roof is not an easy feat, but Lily is passionate about her business and delivering high quality service. She is known to think outside the box for new ideas and solutions, which result in divinely decorated events and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime for her clients.

"Over the years we have been lucky to be part of so many memorable events. Some that stand out to me include: providing our services for the Canucks Gala which hosted over four hundred people. It highlighted the Boys and Girls Club and included major athletes from around the country. We also did an event for Justin Trudeau before he

Lily's entrepreneurial drive extends to her passion for fashion. She is also the cocreator of the online store, Cien Boutique. "My best friend and I launched it a year and a half ago and continue to work together to source quality fashion items for our clients. I have so much fun doing this!"

became Prime Minister and I got to meet him!"

Trust is a key value that Lily brings from her personal life into her business interactions. She values the ability to trust what people offer, promise, and commit to doing. In her business, she wants every client to understand that they can safely trust her with their big day, knowing that they are in good hands, and that she will do everything she can to ensure they feel at ease. Lily is a woman of her word and through this has built strong relationships along the way.

You only have one life, live in the moment and do what makes you happiest.

When it comes to inspiration in the event décor & floral design industry, Lily admires the very talented Karen Tran from San Diego, California. “Her floral design continues to amaze me, she is completely over the top and has no limits. Her designs are breathtaking... almost unimaginable." No matter the woman or the industry, Lily admires resilience and determination. She understands that things can be difficult and there will always be struggles as an entrepreneur. She explains, “People will tell you ‘it can’t be done’ or ‘no way’... and it takes a resilient person to continue to push ahead. Determination is the only way to get there.” Amen Sista!

Event planning can be stressful. Having one vendor do both design and floral is a big convenience and time saver.

Divine Décor is a unique business in the event industry as it offers full décor, floral, and planning all under one roof, including in-house rentals. They have a large team of specialists to ease the stress of event planning for both the lead up to and day of the event! We had the chance to ask Lily some more questions about her business.

How has your business journey been? Filled with lots of ups and downs – times where I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing and others where I was over the moon with my accomplishments. Most importantly, it has been the biggest learning experience of my life. Even my business degree couldn’t have prepared me for this journey. Today, I feel blessed and very happy for where we are as a small business... it has been a long, bumpy ride! What is your goal for the Divine Décor Brand? Achieving the highest level of service and quality in the field. I want all clients to walk away from their initial consultations feeling that our team will take care of all of their needs. But more importantly, I want them to look back after the wedding and feel that they definitely made the best choice by choosing us!

What is your favorite thing about your business? How it is different every day; I don’t ever get bored of doing the same thing. Every wedding or event is different from the next and there are always new clients I get to meet and become friends with. Every year the trends are different and it keeps you excited! What is one of the biggest lessons you have learned running your business? The lesson of delegating tasks and not do everything myself! I used to do way too much myself instead of handing over tasks that didn’t require me to do them. It was not easy... I guess I am a little bit of a control freak. Once I was comfortable with letting my staff do more tasks, my life became balanced.

What are some mistakes people make when planning their wedding? a. Not having someone there on the day of to help the plans run smoothly and efficiently. Hiring a coordinator if you don’t have the help is a great idea. b. Choosing to do the takedown of items at the end of the night is always a struggle for couples. Weddings are exhausting and the last thing you want to do is pack up your wedding at midnight. What’s next for Divine Décor? Divine Décor is expanding to offer more rentals and new services such as custom made floral and green walls, a new premium linen collection and new prime décor items. In addition, the new rental catalogue will be launching soon. Clients will be able to order online and choose from a wide variety of items in one click!

As a creative entrepreneur, Erin develops content for her clients marketing touch points, and puts just as much thought into her own brand. Attributing authenticity and connection to her creative success, Erin uses Instagram to showcase things she loves, such as décor, lifestyle, and entertaining tips that inspire her followers. With creating beautifully engaging stories always on her mind, in her spare time, you will find her blending gorgeous imagery and engaging copy, producing contributing content for Jillian Harris’ blog, Glitter Guide, and BCLiving. We sat down with Erin in her Gastown office to chat branding, photography, and how she enriches the brands she works with.

DEFINE YOUR BRAND. Your vision, your imagery, your words = your brand. A brand vision has to be something that comes from the gut and feels natural to you. If it’s too forced, you won’t be able to sustainably support it! My starter tip to new clients is to create a secret Pinterest board and then take some time scrolling Pinterest. Pin images that appeal to you. Just go with your gut, and pin pin pin. Soon, you’ll see a brand pattern and a jumping off point. PROP IT LIKE IT’S HOT. Keep your photo prop selection fresh – styling a photo for social media is easier when you have items on hand that can help tell a visual story. Updating your props with the trends keeps you relevant. This can be as easy as a new accessory, décor item, or even a magazine. Bonus, it’s an excuse to buy another fave coffee mug. PHOTOGRAPHY MATTERS. The question I’m asked most often is how I create my bright and crisp images. I rarely ever use my iPhone to shoot anything, preferring images shot on my Canon camera. High quality images are the basis of building a gorgeous Instagram feed, so invest in a quality camera, and dedicate time to tinkering around with how to use it. There are plenty of YouTube tutorials that can help get you started on the basics. I also offer one-on-one sessions and workshops. KEEP IT COHESIVE. Some of the best personal and business brands reflect the same feel through all of their images. You’ll often see a colour pattern that draws the eye, along with varying types of shots, from wider, to details, to flat lays, to people and textures. While it may take time to get your rhythm down, a well-balanced feed will draw in your key demographic to follow along, hopefully converting them into a fan and eventually, a customer. COLLABORATION IS KING. Remember, it’s called “social” media for a reason! Support your fellow entrepreneurs and businesses by liking and commenting on their posts. Getting out from behind your iPhone and meeting up IRL can help to form your community, network, and grow your brand. Who knows, you may even end up working on a project or two together! ABOUT THE DESIGNER:

Rimpy Sahota

Born and raised in Beautiful BC, Rimpy Sahota grew up in a household surrounded by sisters. Rimpy’s mother created all of their clothing by hand, making them each feel uniquely beautiful. With this strong, creative influence, it’s no surprise that Rimpy grew to become a Canadian women’s wear designer whose passion lies in exploring her unique vision through her various designs and collections. However, Rimpy’s career path wasn’t a straightforward one. With an Honors Degree, she initially dabbled in the world of Finance & Accounting. Her love for fashion coupled with her business knowledge eventually led her to work with the respected Dynamite & Lululemon labels as a buyer and designer. With this experience and taste of the fashion industry, Rimpy’s true passion for creative business and social responsibility was sparked and the rest is history. Her personal brand, Rimpy Sahota Ltd. was launched in August 2014 and her quest to make all women feel both beautiful and comfortable began. Her commitment to local business and sustainability extends her positive impact beyond just the women wearing the garments, but to those behind the manufacture of the product. Rimpy prides herself on creating strong connections with all involved in her business and she firmly believes in the principle that ‘we are all equal’. Devoting the majority of her time to forecasting, buying, designing, and constantly finding inspiration through the European arts and history, Rimpy specializes in feminine, free-flowing designs and silhouettes. She understands the female body and creates her designs based on the fact that every woman differentiates

in body shape. While we differ physically, all women – no matter their age, size or culture – will feel the appreciation of their natural beauty in the sophisticated statement pieces the Rimpy Sahota Collection offers. The collection focuses on women’s ready-to-wear garments with just the right amount of fashion-forward appeal in her classic and refined designs. Expressing their creator’s strong values of natural beauty, each one of Rimpy’s designs remain consistent in their reflection of quality and authenticity, often including pleats, darts and slits. In creating this confident and spontaneous look, she pays close attention to each aspect of her designs, focusing on a variety of color palettes such as: creams, ivories and blacks but also more vibrant colors such as yellows, pinks, and teals. Her collections are curated for the independent and sophisticated woman to feel her best.

@ilikeherstylevancouver | SPRING 2017

“My motto is to always strive for what you believe in and always give 110% to whatever you do in life. If you truly believe in something, don’t give up on it. At times it’s easy to give up, but always challenge and push yourself.”

PAGEANTS & PURPOSE Pageantry is too easily dismissed by critics based off what’s seen on television. I entered the world of pageants and soon found the many negative perceptions people held were an injustice to the ambitious, intelligent, and talented women I met.

BY NAVNEET KAUR NANAN, NATIONAL CANADIAN MISS BRITISH COLUMBIA Last summer, I was invited by the German Embassy to represent Canada at the European Youth Parliament Forum in Serbia to speak on the extreme circumstances faced by female Syrian refugees. The qualities I developed in pageantry were paramount to making this trip a huge success for me. I was confident each time I stood to speak and was so incredibly passionate about the topic since it lined right up with my platform of women and girls empowerment. Pageants have taught me to stay true to myself and my values and never to compromise them. Aside from the discipline and drive that pageants have given me, the greatest gift I have received is to be the truest, most authentic version of myself. To radiate a joy of self love that people don't only see, but one that they can feel too. I have learned to uninhibitedly be myself, not a version that other people want or expect, or a version that fits a mould or set of specific standards.

Photos: M & HIM @m.and.him

I have just returned from the Miss Canada pageant where I placed in the Top 5. This pageant exists to empower women to be whatever they choose to be. They don’t care about how much you weigh, what colour your skin is, how tall you are, or what you look like in a swimsuit. The women I was blessed to meet have amazing career and academic goals. They’re passionate about service and change making. These are the girls that I choose to surround myself with. This is my tribe.

CONNECT ON SOCIAL |

@navinanan

Now in the spirit of being myself, I couldn’t hold back when it came time to present my on stage introduction. I go into each pageant with the goal of using the title to do my part, with or without the crown. Rather than starting with my name and where I was from, I began with powerfully identifying myself as a feminist. I then went on to educate the audience on the extreme social pressures, objectification, and injustices faced by females across the globe and within this country. I boldly vowed to do my part to shatter the glass ceiling, and it was only after this, that I greeted the audience with a “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, coming to you all the way from beautiful British Columbia, I am Navneet Kaur Nanan and my heart beats for the justice of ALL women.” Before my name or where I was from, I needed it to be known that as women, “We are worth more than our looks. We are worth more than our bodies. We, are worth more.” I knew that it wasn’t my name that needed to be remembered, it was my message. Pageantry has left me changed and inspired to continue to keep pushing myself beyond my comfort zone because that’s where I’ve found the truest, most authentic form of myself. Nothing will stop me from serving my purpose. That’s something that’ll stay with me forever, long after that stage lights dim, and the applause fades. I have pageants to thank for teaching me that I’m limitless in the pursuit of serving my purpose.
