@ilikeherstylevancouver | FALL 2017

JODY BELANGER Fashion has been a part of my life since I was a young girl striving to create the most perfect ‘boutique’ for my ‘best clients’ (aka, Mom & Dad) to shop through. It was no surprise that my passion lead to a career in the Fashion Industry, giving me the opportunity to do what I love – share Style with Soul to Empower! What brings me so much joy is the opportunity to express our inner style in ways with fashion that words cannot explain – nor do they need to! The beauty of it all is that nothing is permanent; you are free to wear the styles that speak to you as organically as a mood ring tells the world your feelings in any given moment. I grew up in retail, and I mean literally grew up! This industry raised me from age 16 to 32 and the lessons it has taught me are far beyond the fabrications and hemlines. (And oh, the stereotype that all we do is fold clothes!) My inner calling to share my experiences and use them to help guide others led me to a Training & Development career both at Guess? Canada and Blanche Macdonald. This industry keeps me dreaming and I had such an amazing time taking on the creative direction for the fashion editorials in this Fall Fashion & Styling Issue. If fashion & styling are a part of the equation, you can count on my creative juices to start flowing and my heart to be pumping pure energy & excitement. As I continue to walk this journey of life, I am curious – where will this well-traveled fashion road lead me next? Perhaps I'll find an opportunity to style women & young girls not only physically with outfit choices to exude their true essence, but to bring out their soul and inner confidence that we all deserve to feel and share with the world. To keep it tamed and hidden would be a disservice to everyone. Who knows what the future holds, but that’s so damn exciting!!! All I know for sure is that fashion will always be a key part of my life. The world is your runway and your style is a way to leave them wanting an encore – impressions last a lifetime, so make it count!

xo, Jody

KYLA GETTY Okay so I'm going to be honest: I love 'clothes'... but talking about Fashion with a capital F scares the $*%# out of me! Unexpected words coming from the co-editor of a style magazine? Absolutely! I have always looked with admiration to Jody's style expertise. (Let me just say: the edits she has curated in this issue do not disappoint!) However, I don't think I'm alone in the opinion that Fashion can sometimes be downright scary! There are the cut-throat 'Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada's' of the world, the paper thin runway models wearing outlandish couture... and the red carpet icons with unattainable wardrobe budgets. God bless you if you're one of the above, but that's just not me... and that's not what fashion is really about! While I may not be confident speaking about fashion in the terms mentioned above, guess what! I DO know that I am confident when I feel good in what I'm wearing. I am confident when my outfit flatters my figure. I am confident when I'm comfortable but still feel 'dolled up' (it's the best!) I am confident when I know that my closet is equipped with a few quality staples for various occasions, along with a few recent trending purchases to mix in. And, you may have noticed, I am confident when I'm wearing BLACK! Fashion is an incredibly creative medium that enables us to design our experience! Our style determines how the world sees us and how we will feel in the world. The freedom to embrace style is a gift. Choosing what we wear (and why we wear it) is a deliberate act and a declaration of self that permeates into all aspects of our lives, with a perpetual effect. Feelin' frumpy and dress in stretchies? You're setting the tone for your day and those you meet. Excitedly embracing a trend? You're making a statement that you're current and relevant. Headed to an appointment where you want to impress? Rock those heels – and that meeting too! When you clothe yourself in confidence, you'll find that you are always in fashion.

xo, Kyla

MAGAZINE

PATIO PARTY

August 12, 2017 ILHSV founders Jody Belanger and Kyla Getty brought this magazine to life by hosting over 100 guests on the stunning patio of Glowbal Restaurant in Downtown Vancouver. The Patio Party was an opportunity for readers to meet the featured women of our Summer Issue while enjoying delicious food, sips, entertainment, and shopping with an array of vendor pop ups. Local celebrity radio personality, Nira Arora was the perfect voice of the event as the emcee. The event was created in support of Covenant House as a drive for cash and clothing donations. Over $2000 was raised along with 50+ bags of clothing. The donations were personally delivered by the founders at a second, private event which was hosted at Covenant House for the homeless female youth who rely on the organization. With makeup application provided by AX Art, Brand new undergarments and bra fitting provided by Boutique Blanche, an empowering message from Holistic Life Coach, Stacey Rae, and treats provided by partners Danielle Wiebe with Arbonne and Justine of 'It Just Flows'. It was truly an unforgettable Experience.

How has your style changed over the years? My style changes every few years. Depending on how I’ve grown, you can see me wearing more neutral shades, classic silhouettes or colour, and trendy items. Sometimes I can become more feminine and other times a bit more masculine. It depends on where my life is at.

ACCESSORIZE DAILY & WEAR WHATEVER MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE A

LEGEND.

How do you hope for your place in the fashion industry to make a positive impact on others lives? More specifically touching on fashion & lifestyle blogging: I hope that I can inspire others to wear the outfits that make them happy. I chat about my life as well, so It would be great for them to know they are not alone when it comes to careers, love, travel, etc.

WHEN I LOOK GOOD, I FEEL GOOD. I FEEL THE MOST CONFIDENT WHEN I’M WEARING SOMETHING THAT FITS GREAT, GETS COMPLIMENTS AND MAKES ME FEEL LIKE I CAN TAKE ON THE WORLD ... LIKE A GREAT PAIR OF HEELS OR BLAZER.

How would you describe your style? I would describe my style in 3 words: effortless, approachable and classic. I enjoy a more monochromatic wardrobe that is filled with classic pieces, but jazzing the outfit up with a cool trend or colour. What is your favourite Fall trend this year? My favourite fall trends are: 70’s vibes, red and matching sets. What is a fall staple piece that never leaves your closet? Fall staples that never leave my closet are: Chelsea boots, a black coat and a turtleneck sweater.

What are some of your favourite brands? Alexander Wang, Chloe, Stella McCartney, Rachel Comey, Assembly New York, Creatures Of Comfort, Melissa Araujo, Sonya Lee, Iza Jewelery, Keltie Leanne, Foe & Dear, Mejuri, Kara Yoo, Aiki District… I can go on! Who do you look to for style inspiration? I typically don’t look to the fashion shows but more so what my friends are wearing at the time. If we’re talking about iconic people then I would say Alexa Chung and Celine Dion is a street style badass! What’s one thing you wish you could pull off, but don’t dare try? I’ve always wanted pink hair, but can’t get myself to do it!

What’s your favourite Pantone color of the Fall 2017 Season? Either Navy Peony or Grenadine…. But does it come in black?! Describe your favourite pair of shoes. My favourite pair of shoes need no introduction: Adidas Stan Smith. What does the future hold for your business? I have no idea and that’s just the way I like it. I don’t plan my business very much because I enjoy taking each opportunity when it comes my way. But I know that there will be growth.

STYLIST

SAMANTHA DEMPSTER A Certified Image Consultant, blogger and a mother of two young boys, Samantha works with women one-on-one to create their ideal wardrobe – with body type and lifestyle in mind. Growing up with a passion for fashion & design, her journey began in retail as a visual merchandiser and manager. After becoming a mother, Samantha was excited to discover the Image Consulting Program at Langara College, which made it possible to turn her passion into a meaningful career that also allowed her flexibility as a mom. Today her consulting business includes working with clients on wardrobe edits, personal shopping, and sharing her expertise at speaking engagements for events and retail stores. She also documents her personal style and industry tips on her blog, The Family Jewels. Her approach to fashion is simple – less is more. She believes that quality is far better than quantity!

THE GREATEST REWARD IN THIS LINE OF WORK IS HELPING WOMEN BUILD CONFIDENCE.

When did your love for fashion begin? And how did it shape where you are today? As long as I can remember, maybe around the age of 8. I do recall several consecutive birthdays asking for a Club Monaco sweatshirt – no toys, just clothes! It has always been a passion, and the fact that I was able to turn it into a career, I feel incredibly lucky!

How would you describe your style? I often use the term 'casual luxe' to describe my style. I am laidback when it comes to my fashion, but I do enjoy a high/low mix. What brand are you wearing for today's shoot? Arc Apparel @arcapparelca

How has your style changed over the years? It has been simplified. I am confident now in knowing what I like, and what I don’t. I stick to classic designs and silhouettes and minimal pattern to make pairing easier. No more “one-offs” in my closet!

What advice do you have for the woman who feels she doesn’t know where to start when it comes to fashion and style? Start from the basics and work your way up from there. Focus on what your lifestyle is and what clothes fit into that. Also, have fun and add character to your look with accessories and shoes! In your opinion, how important is style when it comes to confidence? I’m biased because I am a personal stylist! But in all honesty, I believe it can make a world of difference. I have watched women transform and build positive body image just by wearing the right clothes. Women exude confidence when they feel good in what they are wearing! What is your favourite Fall trend this year? Vintage inspired. Floral blouses, double breasted blazers, faux fur coats. What is a fall staple piece that never leaves your closet? Leather jacket. What are some of your favourite brands? Eek! It’s hard to choose! I love Velvet, Everlane, Sezane, and Mother Denim (...to name a few!) What’s your favourite part of living in Vancouver? The endless amount of outdoor activities to do... and the food! What are your Top 3 Values in life? Love hard, travel often, always be grateful. How do you hope for your place in the fashion industry to make a positive impact on others lives? By continuing to work one-on-one with women and help boost their confidence through dressing in the right clothes. I would also love to do more volunteer work in the future, hopefully with an organization like Dress for Success. What does the future hold for your business? Oh wow, the list is endless! More speaking engagements (I hope) and possibly doing seminars! I would like to expand my business into working with more male clients. I would also love to do a fashion segment on the news, become a fashion contributor for a media company, and write a book on style.

CHRISTINE KLASHINSKY

Entrepreneur and owner of South Surrey’s Muse Social Fashion House, Christine is a graduate of the Fashion Merchandising program at Blanche Macdonald. It was there that a concept project for her small business course would eventually become a real-life boutique (a dream come true!) just two years after graduating. Christine’s career launched as a fashion merchandiser for a well-known Canadian retailer; it was an experience that taught her in-depth about the industry she was passionate about - but she wanted more. After months of contemplating, researching and soul searching, she followed her heart and opened Muse Social Fashion House in Morgan Crossing. Recently having celebrated it's 7th year in business and with plans for expansion in both 'brick and mortar' and online, Christine is excited for what’s to come! At home, she’s a busy wife to her supportive husband and mom to her young son and Great Dane.

How would you describe your style? Classic, comfortable, and clean (all Muse of course!) I tend to keep things pretty easy when it comes to my style and stick to those essentials that everyone should have in their closet. It's always fun to add the season's top trends wherever I can, too.

” GROW

THROUGH WHAT

YOU GO

THROUGH.

How has your style changed over the years? My style for the last ten years hadn’t changed too much until I recently became a Mom. That was a different ball game. White Pants? Tight dresses? No Bra? No way! I have definitely transitioned into more pieces that are easy to put on and go but still look great and put together.

MY GO-TO IN THE FALL IS A PAIR OF GREAT JEANS, AN EASY TEE WITH MY LEATHER JACKET OVER TOP AND A CHIC PAIR OF BOOTIES - MODERN AND EFFORTLESS? YES, PLEASE!

What are some of your favourite brands? I love mixing high-end pieces with more affordable items. I am a lover of designer bags, so you can find me typically carrying around one from my collection, paired with items from the store. I live in denim so that’s a no brainer; we carry a brand called Just Black from LA and they are amazing – I wear them all the time. Other favourite brands include: Ellison, Everly and Mustard Seed. Last, but definitely not least, I love our in-house brand Muse The Label. The collection has been curated for the Muse Girl who loves fashionable pieces at an affordable price.

Who do you look to for style inspiration? I really look everywhere for style inspiration. Social media – especially Instagram and Insta-stories – are my go-to. I follow bloggers and influencers from all around the world and I love to see what’s in fashion in their respective countries and areas. Pinterest is also a favourite of mine. Sometimes I have items that I love but I just need a little photo inspiration of how to pull the look all together and Pinterest is perfect for that. It’s like an always available look-book. What is your favourite Fall trend this year? Velvet. You will see a lot of it this fall and in many different ways. From slip on shoes, to kimonos, to dresses and sweaters – velvet is making a comeback and I am thrilled about it.

What are your fears and how do you overcome them? Failure is always my biggest fear. When I was in the process of opening Muse I was constantly scared that I would fail. Fear can become paralyzing. I had to make a conscious effort to push my fears aside and have faith and trust in my decisions. I also knew I didn’t want to look back and wonder what could have happened if I had trusted myself. In those moments, I had to determine what was most important to me. It didn’t take me long to realize that I wanted to pursue my passion and follow my instinct. I would be lying if I said that I still don’t feel that way from time to time, but I have learned to trust and believe in myself. I have gotten to where I am today by letting go of that fear.

ENTREPRENEUR & FOUNDER O F R I M P Y S A H O TA A P P A R E L

RIMPY SAHOTA

Born in Kitimat, BC, Rimpy Sahota grew up with 4 older sisters, and a mother who could design basically anything. Rimpy studied accounting and finance, but always hoped to eventually own a business in apparel. At the age of 26, she announced to her family that she was to become an entrepreneur by the age of 30 ... and she never looked back! Using her numerical knowledge and expertise, she entered the industry as a buyer for major fashion brands such as Lululemon and Dynamite Clothing. During this time, she was encouraged by her senior managers in Montreal that she had the skills of both a buyer and a designer. With this in mind, Rimpy began to studying design and working closely with the senior designers of Dynamite Clothing. Today, with a successful business of her own for the past 3 years – the rest is history.

BEAUTY IS NOTHING WITHOUT BRAINS. IN TODAYS SOCIETY EVERYONE CAN BE WHAT IS KNOWN AS “BEAUTIFUL” WITH A FILTER OR EDITS OR RETOUCHES, BUT I STRONGLY BELIEVE NOTHING IS MORE BEAUTIFUL OR HANDSOME THAN A BEAUTIFUL MIND.

What is a fall staple piece that never leaves your closet? My Black Bella skirt – I wear it at least 2 times a week come Fall/Winter. It is our best selling item during those seasons for the past 2 years.

How has your style changed over the years? I have changed to become my own. I am not one who you will see with black sweats on the streets of Vancouver, rather I enjoy wearing European trends: pencil skirts, off the shoulder dresses, matching two pieces – that is me! I enjoy the female figure, and feel one can enhance their beauty with a wide range of silhouettes – fitted, gathered ... the list is endless. As I get older, my style and taste certainly change and evolve and I love it!

What advice do you have for the woman who feels she doesn’t know where to start when it comes to fashion and style? The only advice I would have is to wear what feels right for yourself, surround yourself with people who allow you to feel comfortable in your own skin, and the rest will come easy.

When did your love for fashion begin? I was 3 years old when I realized my mum made all the garments my 4 older sisters would wear. She would always make all of us feel like dolls – so perfect, so beautiful and so loved. Today, my business is based upon running a Canadian fashion brand that caters to women of all shapes and sizes to make them feel both loved and beautiful. The fabrics used are those which are of a soft and comfortable feel, that stretch along a womans beautiful curves. I would say my upbringing has had a major impact on my brand's values and core mission. How would you describe your style? I would define it as comfortable and feminine. (Minus the heels – because let's be honest, they're not comfortable!) 100% of what I design has stretch and is wrinkle-free. A major reason why I started my label was that during my past careers, nothing I wore was comfortable. I have found that I'm most efficient when I'm comfortable! (Very entrepreneurial of me, hah!) I enjoy fabrics that are high-quality and feel good against my skin. I want to look as good as I feel ... and feel as good as I look – effortlessly chic. What is your fashion philosophy? Rather than wearing 'Fast Fashion', I have a wardrobe consisting of lasting, classic, statement pieces, which I can mix & match and wear repeatedly. I dress to support the economy rather than to invest in garments which will be disposed of in 3-4 months. With enhancing my knowledge of our economic crisis with fashion and pollution I have changed my perspective on fashion dearly. Hence, why I design Vancouver-made, everlasting women's fashion. I believe in transparency and disclosure. How do you stay up to speed on the fashion industry trends? Instagram, Kardashians, Vogue.com, Paris runway shows, and reading the news. Believe it or not, fashion is forecasted from what is going on in our economy – but that’s for another interview as it’s a long process to explain. How do you hope for your place in the fashion industry to make a positive impact on others lives? I hope that I open up the doors for others to follow their dreams and pursue whatever they wish. I hope to inspire others that it can happen. I hope that through my positive outlook on the industry and collaborative efforts with the Eco Fashion Family, that I can shine light on the importance of fashion and our world. I have a number of mentees and see them growing at a rapid pace – I love seeing others do well. We are all a team, there are no competitors in this life.

When did your love for fashion begin? And how did it shape where you are today? When I was six, I'd walk to my babysitters each morning to be taken to school. From the time my mom left for work to the time I got to my babysitters house, I had put on fruit basket earrings, blue eye shadow and a Hawaiian oversized shirt with an ‘80s belt cinched at my waist. I just always had a love for the arts and fashion.

YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO WEAR AND ROCK WHATEVER YOU WANT. AS LONG AS YOU LOVE IT AND YOU FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKS, THEN THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS.

What is your favourite Fall trend this year? For fall, I love the loafer trend. They are incredibly comfortable because they’re flat and casual enough to wear with jeans, but also dressy enough to wear with more formal looks. I’m also looking forward to fresh new denim fits; I love the cropped and uneven hem look. Also, if you follow me on social media, you’ll know that I currently can’t get enough of bodysuits.

LIVING IN A SMALL TOWN, I'D WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS AS AN ESCAPE. THROUGH MUSIC, MY LOVE FOR FASHION GREW. AS MUCH AS I LOVED FASHION, I ALSO KNEW THAT FASHION WASN’T ENOUGH FOR ME, I HAD TO HAVE A PURPOSE. HELPING PEOPLE FIND THAT EXCITING FASHION JOB IS NOW MY PURPOSE.

Cont. My career in this industry officially began when I worked in retail as a Sales Associate. I moved on to become a Buyer in Montreal, then a Store Manager, and eventually a Recruiter, which is when I got the idea for Style Nine to Five. It was this career evolution that helped me realize what I loved to do and made me feel like I was making a small difference. Who do you look to for style inspiration? A lot of Australian brands, Instagram influencers, and Style Nine to Five’s writers. I like to see what they write about and what pieces they choose. I also love following Vogue’s Instagram for inspo.

What advice do you have for the woman who feels she doesn’t know where to start when it comes to fashion and style? Walk into a store and ask a sales person to pick out the newest pieces and help style you from head to toe. I used to be a sales person and that was my favourite part of the job. For the most part, every woman left the store with a new outfit that I put together, that they would never have picked out for themselves. Find inspiration on Instagram or in a magazine, then make a small list of the key pieces from that look. It’s important to start small and build a wardrobe from there. What’s your mantra? Be nice.

What’s your favourite part of living in Vancouver? The hiking and clean air, being able to escape into nature when I’m feeling stressed or overwhelmed, living so close to the ocean, and being able to see the mountains. What does the future hold for your business? I am working to build different areas of my business. The job posting part runs like a welloiled machine at this point. Employers post and pay for the job listing themselves right on the website and job seekers apply. Now I can focus on doing more handson recruiting, helping people find their dream jobs on a much larger scale.

FASHION FORWARD STYLE FOR

YOUR WALLS See Feelin' It Decals' Ad to the Left!

Think Local: ANGELISA EDWARDS IS THE CREATIVE MIND of FEELIN' IT DECALS. FROM PRO SNOWBOARDING, TO GRAPHIC DESIGN, TO DECAL ENTERPRISE ... THIS SQUAMISH-BASED MOMBOSS HAS A BUSINESS WORTH SUPPORTING!

WHY WALL DECALS?

They are affordable, customizable, and can give unique personality to a space. Exploring the possibilities of what one can do with just wall decals can be mind blowing.

FAVOURITE TRANSFORMATION “ I have had a few people tell me that this room is 'my style'. I tend to morph spaces and rooms into something that I am really into during that particular season and trend. I love the rustic and modern look with a lot of greenery.ˮ

MO R E

ONLINE

Visit ilikeherstylevancouver.com for our March 1, 2017 feature with founder, Angelisa Edwards for more great photos, info, and decal inspiration!

The tropical leaves wall decals that I installed on a kitchen wall that was layered with bamboo wood. Before installation, the room came off very dark, masculine, and industrial. The green+blue wall decals really brightened the room, adding a soft bohemian feel. (See this look featured in my ad on the adjacent page.)

CUSTOM PROJECTS

I work on many custom projects. One that hits home for me is a massive mountain wall mural for a nursery that stretches about one hundred ninety inches across! It is the largest project I have done and I am so happy with how it turned out!

FASHION FOR THE HOME I relate my wall decals to fashion quite often. My fashion style is always changing and I feel that my home decor changes often too... which makes the wall decals a great option. They are easy to install, remove, and wont break the bank. Every home and space is a reflection of you, in a way, so why not express your style and personality throughout your home, office or other space?

TRENDING INFLUENCES I'm constantly researching colours and trends. I find the best place to do this is within the fashion industry. Colours, prints, and textures play such a huge role and can be both applied to fashion and home decor. It has been quite fun, interesting, and sometimes shocking to see what will be the next "big thing"... but thats what fashion is all about! That shock value can be horrendous yet beautiful therefore, being able to explore and incorporate that into wall decals has been very exciting.

TAYLOR ALLER

We discovered this amazing woman, as she was nominated for this feature by her loving husband, Jake who says that she inspires him daily. Jake shares, “regardless of what life throws at her, she has a drive like I’ve never seen before. She’s battled suicide, depression, anxiety, body issues and health issues... and she has come out swinging like a champ. And yes, I know, I’m in love with her, but so many others we know are, too. She is the most caring and kind woman I know and she deserves the recognition for all that she does, and how she manages it all with grace, realness, and joy.”

A self-described ‘small town girl with big heart ambitions’, Taylor Aller is a woman who wears many hats – each of which share a common motivator – to live life to the fullest! She’s a Registered Massage Therapist and a teacher at West Coast College of Massage Therapy where she shapes the next generation of RMTs. Along with her

The number one key to a healthy & successful relationship – if I can pick just one – would be courage. Because that's really the basis of all other factors. It takes courage to be honest, open, vulnerable, and make mistakes. It takes courage to fall, learn, ask for help, and grow. But mostly it takes tremendous courage to love (for yourself and your partner).

What advice do you have for the woman who feels unhappy in life? It's not so much advice as a question: Have you taken care of you? Often, as women, we tend to overlook ourselves. It's always our spouses, work, heck even the dog, before ourselves. (I'm totally guilty of all of the above!) I can't speak for all women, but what helps me is that question. That reminder: I am enough, I matter, and my needs and dreams are important, too. Have I taken care of me?

"We're very much alike and also complete opposites. When I need inspiration I often look to him because his strengths are my weaknesses and his weaknesses are my strengths. There's always plenty to pull from when you have differences and perspectives like that."

What are your Top 3 values and why? Hands down: Courage, kindness, and honesty. What would you like to see change in our society’s expectations of relationships today?

As part of Taylor's experience, she received hair & makeup by @axart, the photoshoot with @kimjamesphotography and treats from @blenz

“My favourite quote is from one of my favourite books, The Alchemist: 'When you truly desire something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it.'

SO MUCH. This is really where The Relationship Project was born, with our desire to see real relationships portrayed in the media and change these fantasy expectations. I want to see the change from fast, easy and disposable relationships to slow, worthy, and committed. I'd love for Disney Fairytales to come with a disclaimer that relationships only look like that with hard work, a lot of love, and dedication. I want the expectation that relationships

are delicious, hard work, meant for growth, and so very worth it. Body Image Movement yay or nay? Can you relate? 100% Yay. As a Registered Massage Therapist, I treat many, many patients. That means seeing – and touching – their naked bodies. Guess what? They are all different. Out of all of them, not even one looks like what you see, airbrushed in the media. Male or female. A few have come close, but no cigar. It breaks my heart a little bit when I see those patients insecure about their bodies, because of the pressure of the media. It’s not often the media shows the stretch marks, scars, deformities, muscles, moles, dry skin or cellulite that I so often see on… everyone. Those images aren’t what we see on a daily basis. There is only one condition your body should be in, male or female, young or old: healthy. That looks a little different for everyone. This movement is a huge motivator for my volunteerism with SVNH and Free To Be Talks. I still continue to struggle with body positivity (even as a grown woman!) If I can walk beside anyone else through this journey – I'm all about it!

(It's even tattooed on me!)"

As co-founder of the popular Lower Mainland movement, Barinder Rasode believes that SheTalks creates a stage for women to be admired 'like the rock star they are' while giving them the opportunity to mentor and inspire. Her name may sound familiar – she's no stranger to leadership roles, including two terms as a member of the Surrey City Council. “During my run for Mayor, I was struck by reminders of how 'I wasn't good enough'. Sadly, I was told by some that I was 'too brown' and by others in the South Asian community I was 'too white'. I am a divorced mother of three who defines herself as Canadian. During the campaign I was surrounded by a group of women who inspired me and gave me strength. I realized that as women we live in a culture where we sometimes receive messages that we are not good enough. When SheTalks co-founder Natasha Raey came to me about a speaker series for women to share their real raw stories – unscripted and unapologetic – I said, hell yes!” Today, the Core Committee work with love and determination to organize events and share their messages online. As SheTalks begins it's fourth year, they're expanding their reach with their first, innovative, digital event. Stay tuned!

ON THE POWER OF USING YOUR VOICE:

ON STYLING HER IDEAL LIFE:

There is nothing more powerful than using our voice. Each woman that shares her journey uses her voice to empower others. As women share their authentic self, they free themselves from the concepts of 'should have' or 'could have'. Being real inspires others.

Styling my ideal life is creating opportunities for what comes my way by letting go of the chains of expectations. From who I choose to spend my time with to how I choose to give back – I keep in mind that my ideal life is full of happiness and confidence. If those feelings don't grow, it doesn't serve me. So I don't do it.

ABOUT SHETALKS SHETALKS ENDOWS AN OPEN PLATFORM FOR WOMEN WHICH CONNECTS AND INSPIRES THEM.

SheTalks aspires to harness the power of our collective. To be vulnerable. To be supportive. To be powerful. SheTalks challenges the notion of silencing our voices.

“Each day, treat yourself with the same love and kindness you shower others with. There is no number on a scale, grade on a paper, title on a door or wealth in a bank Photos: Iulia Agnew

account that will give you as much happiness as the happiness that comes from appreciating and valuing yourself.” CONNECT ON SOCIAL @barinderrasode

ON THE VALUES OF INTEGRITY, HARD WORK AND EQUALITY:

Integrity, hard work and equality are values that bring our SheTalks Core Committee together and bind us to creating a community for women to share their journeys. Integrity is leading with honesty, making a person whole and undivided. Hard work is the effort that creates the endurance needed to make big things happen. Equality is about our rights and opportunities.

ON COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Community engagement is a critical part of building healthy communities. Not only do we create a place for people to be valued but we also encourage people to be invested. Valued and invested people work together in everyones best interest. As the SheTalks network grows, we see first hand how engaging creates opportunities and support pods that activate to support anyone that needs it.

A NEW TREND IN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS. When it comes to trends in business, I think there are so many topics that we can discuss. We can talk about the increasing need for businesses to have an online presence, we can talk about the need for video to be part of your marketing strategy, we can talk about crowd funding or even how finding your niche is becoming more important than ever. Instead, however, I want to talk about the trend that I believe will become more and more valuable as times goes on. The trend of honesty, authenticity, and vulnerability. Gone are the days that business owners can hide behind their company, avoid sharing about themselves and ignor those hard conversations that need to be had with their clients and audience. People are craving honest conversations, authentic connections and vulnerable feedback from businesses and their owners. Once you can get over the fear of putting yourself out there as a business owner, you will see that the people that are meant to work with you, hire you or be part of your community are more drawn to you, the more you share. The more relatable you are, the more people will trust you. This means sharing the good and exciting but also the bad and the ugly. It's okay to own up to your mistakes, it's okay to admit that you don’t have everything figured out yet. Instead of pretending to be perfect, let your audience see that you are a human just like they are. You have feelings, worries, and uncertainties just as they do. I have noticed that within our community, the more I open up and share, the more others also feel safe and encouraged to share. This creates trust and engagement within our group and allows others to feel that they can talk about the hard topics and come to our community as they are, instead of having to hide their imperfections. I encourage you, as a business owner, to allow yourself to be seen. You'll be surprised with what comes of this. I absolutely love this quote by Brene Brown: “You're imperfect, and you're wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.” Facebook.com/groups/Vancitybusinessbabes connect with us on Instagram @vancitybusinessbabes Join our meetup group meetup.com/vancitybusinessbabes to stay up to date with all of our events!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING: "I've been to a lot of entrepreneurship meetups in a lot of cities and have never found anything quite like Vancity Business Babes. Honestly, I've been to expensive conferences that are less organized ;) If you're a creative lady looking for community you've gotta come to one of the events!" Courtney Johnston of www.rulebreakersclub.com "I was very hesitant at first and was definitely nervous coming to one of the VCBB events and honestly it's been one of the most welcoming warm environments I've ever been to! All the women I met that day were so welcoming the atmosphere and vibe in the room was energetic. Danielle creates a safe and fun environment for like minded entrepreneurial women to come together, collab and learn from each other!! Super stoked for the next upcoming events." Meriel Martin Dinh of Meriel Martin Event Planning "I cannot say enough great things about this amazing community of women that Danielle created! It has not only driven me to pursue my passion but time and time again, I am connected with many other ladies doing the same. This is an awesome way to learn from each other and help all of us grow and reach our goals while having fun! Keep it up girl!" Alisha Kumar of The Social Project Inc.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen I was introduced to this truly amazing must have for my handbag after getting a microdermabrasion treatment at Urban Body Laser. It's so gentle that you can apply it immediately after your treatment! I was blown away to hear this – and not only that, it's a sunscreen! Now let me introduce you to Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen by Colorescience. You're able to stay radiant and protect your skin every day because it offers powerful SPF 50 UVA/UVB protection. Wear it alone or over makeup. It reduces redness and is anti-aging. It's a quick SPF and finishing powder – in one simple, on-the-go application. It's so gentle and natural that I use it on my kids! And, if you're a mom, you know that babies can't wear sunscreen until they are six months of age. Well, I used this on my baby, because it's chemical free! It's super convenient, replaces my compact powder, and I keep mine in my purse at all times. Try it and you'll be hooked, I promise! www.urbanbodylaser.com

DillyBands I'm a mom of three. I have stuff – as in lots of stuff – that I need to lug around with me at all times. Whether you're at birthdays, BBQs, restaurants, etc., your stuff makes it way out of your hands, and it can be pretty annoying trying to get it back into your possession. Along come the DillyBands! DillyBands are stylish, personalized, and reusable bottle, cup and container labels. They are made of non-toxic, 100% food-grade silicone and are dishwasher and microwave safe. Keep them in your purse. To use, simply stretch & release around a bottle, cup or container. They fit nice and snug so small children can't remove them. Personalized for you and your family, so no mix ups when you're out and about with the kids. Side note - these are great party favors for your kid's birthday party! But, shh don't tell anyone, I want to use the idea for my son's birthday coming up! Ha! www.dillybands.ca

So2Go I started getting headaches after drinking wine, which is really hard for me, since I LOVE wine! I found out about So2Go sprays which you spray into your beer or wine to get rid of the sulphur. Other side effects could be flushed skin, nasal congestion, wheezing or chest tightness. Having these symptoms may mean you are sensitive to SULFITES. To relieve these symptoms, add SO2GO to your WINE, BEER, CHAMPAGNE or CIDER and lower the levels of 'free' sulfite preservatives quickly, without affecting the quality or taste of your beverages. I started using So2Go and I've been headache free and proud of it! I carry the spray bottle in my purse at all times – a couple of sprays and I'm good to go. I always get asked about it. My friends have tried it as well and have noticed a difference. Headache free wine is my kind of wine! www.myso2go.com
