A BOUTIQUE STORY INSPIRED FROM ABOVE. Meet Cathy Frith, her daughter Hayley and mother Marilyn.

These are the beautiful faces behind The Mason Jar. So many of us have big dreams that move our souls, yet we let them rest on the back burner and save them for ‘the future’. For The Mason Jar Home Decor & Gift shop creator, Cathy Frith, her passions have always been in the creative realm. So interested in Interior Design and Fashion, she has attended BCIT to immerse herself in not one - but BOTH of her loves.

This mother of two and grandmother to the boutique’s namesake: Mason (5 years old) spent years dreaming of the ultimate boutique that would allow her to surround herself with fashion and decor. She and her husband Bart enjoy ‘picking’ character items, refurbishing furniture, and creating (and re-creating) interesting spaces within their home. It wasn’t until recently that she was called to make her boutique dream a reality after the passing of her late father John (Jack) Waterfield.

To commemorate John’s passing, the three generations got matching, gorgeous, floral tattoos which integrated their patriarch’s ashes within the ink. This even includes grandmother Marilyn, who is 78 and had been with John since she was just 13 years old. Having this piece of her dad with her has helped guide Cathy over the past two years. In times of uncertainty when she finds herself stroking her tattoo, the answers always become clear.

Recently, the answer was that it was time to create her dream boutique – which would include the three women as a shared labour of love.

A strong believer in the importance of timing, Cathy felt her father’s unmistakable push from above. She began the journey of creating her business. Where in the past, she had been met with stumbling blocks, the path to The Mason Jar was now divinely guided and things began to fall into place! A vacancy at the shop’s location in White Rock on Thrift Avenue was brought to her attention by the landlord – and Cathy felt the nod from Dad to jump on it.

In record time, the space was transformed. With the help of her handy husband, Cathy designed the stunning showroom and filled it with an array of beautiful items to share with customers who would become friends. The boutique doors opened on April 24, 2017.

Feeling her father’s push to include her family, Cathy is pleased to have her mother and daughter’s presence in the shop at various levels. It truly is a family affair, and this is one stylish family! Three afternoons each week, you may even get to see her son’s little Mason himself!

MY VISION FOR THE BOUTIQUE WAS TO CREATE A COMFORTABLE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD OFFER A RUSTIC, VINTAGE, GLAM FEEL FOR MY CUSTOMERS. TO BUILD COMMUNITY AND RELATIONSHIPS AND FOR EACH PERSON WHO ENTERED THROUGH THE DOOR TO HOPEFULLY GAIN AN EXPERIENCE DURING THEIR VISIT.

Open Tuesday through Saturday, on most afternoons you’ll find Marilyn in store ready to help. Cathy’s daughter Hayley is student of the Fashion Marketing & Merchandising Program at Vancouver College of Art & Design and also works as a Senior Style Advisor at Aritzia. She enjoys assisting in buying merchandise – though Marilyn is consulted for her nod of approval, as well! Because of this, you’ll find brands and items for women of every age at The Mason Jar – from the popular ‘Brunette The Label’ to vintage furniture and statement jewelry. The binding factor is that every item you’ll see is rustic - vintage - and/or glam!
