MESSAGE

The summer is here and so is our desire to nourish our Body & Soul with the love it deserves – but how? Why is it that the sunshine evokes an urge for all of us to pay attention to the thing we have been neglecting in the dark winter months – ourselves?! I can’t speak for everyone, but I know this story is true for myself. Every year, I wish I had focused on my personal wellness all year, as the half-way mark hits me hard – “where did the time go?” This year has been unique to all the others I have experienced before as I have been growing my precious baby girl inside my tummy who will have arrived into this world by the time you are reading this! Pregnancy has brought on a whole new appreciation for my body and gratitude for what it has endured my entire life – it amazes me everyday! It has also become more heightened in my awareness how important Soul is to our overall well being. If you do not focus on getting your soul in alignment, all the body work in the world will not allow you to reach your maximum potential and feeling of happiness! After all, that is what this life is all about isn’t it? To live a life filled with joy & happiness! Truth be told, this last 9 months have been a struggle for me physically more than emotionally. It has not been an easy pregnancy and there were days I wondered how I would get through it all. I stayed grounded by settling into my soul each and every day… having faith, hope, and love! I believe wholeheartedly that what you think about, you bring about. I often look to the positive reminders in my life to strategically keep me in the necessary mindset to live life as a blessing. In fact, my belief in the power of one’s soul to take them through life beautifully and exactly how it should be is what influenced the naming of my baby girl. Her name is Charody… sounds and feels like ‘Charity’, but has the unique twist of matching her Momma & Daddy, Jody & Kody, with an ‘ody’ spelling. So why Charody? I wanted to set her up with the foundation of a life of compassion and kindness, always acting from a place of love. The world will smile every time they hear her name and may she be reminded of her power every time she says it her essence is already shining so bright.

Jody Belanger Co-Founder Chief Business Director @jody_belanger

Through this trusted journey, I have realized more than ever that our bodies are miraculous vessels that protect us in this life and deserve to be nourished with love and compassion. This summer I challenge everyone to devote the season to themselves and settle into a place of feeling good in their Bodies & Souls exactly where you are! Not, “when I hit this goal I will,” or “I can only celebrate myself when”… SQUASH THAT NOW! You are perfect exactly the way you are and as you navigate to make changes to bring you to further wellness, each step of the way is a beautiful place to be. These pages are full of so much inspiration from local women sharing their stories and our collaborative commitment to our Body & Soul! Flip through the pages and soak in every juicy ounce of it because it is that good! Cheers to a season of self love and a chapter of this journey for the memory books!

xoxo

Tween SUMMER PASSPORT Hey Mama, aren’t you looking forward to ditching the school routine and slowing down a bit over the summer vacation? I sure am! #notgonnamisspackinglunches With that said, I have always looked for ways to keep my daughter Kate engaged and imaginative over the summer so that back to school isn’t a total shock to the system come September. Here are some ideas we will be working on together this year: Blogging - Set up a free blog for your tween as a creative outlet over the summer months and beyond. The modern day scrapbook, a blog is a great outlet for them to write, journal events, showcase their own photography and post photos of crafts or projects that they work on. Give them a variety of topic challenges to write about such as: ‘5 things you didn’t know about me’, ‘My top three favourite things’, ‘5 reasons why it’s good to be me’, ‘My hopes for Grade 7’, ‘Why I love my best friend.’ Set them up to explore all of the happy and positive things that they have to be grateful for in life. This can be something that you do together – and should definitely be something that you monitor before posting. Creating Recipes - Kate loves to be in the kitchen – so we are setting a goal to try a new healthy treat recipe each week. Taking photos and reviewing the recipe will make for great blog posts!

Kate (age 12) here with me in Fort Langley.

Sticker Chart - This has been a go-to for us over the years. Create a poster-board chart with categories... everything from chores to goals. Add stickers to track each accomplishment. Each line item can lead to a prize at the end, after 15-20 stickers. Movie? Money? Starbucks?

Finally, the 2019 Summer Passport...

@kylagetty

Using an inexpensive 4 x 6 mini photo flipbook (I got mine at the Dollar Store), I have created a printable passport to guide tweens’ to set and achieve their summer goals. Each summer, we kick off the vacation by making a list of (attainable) summer goals. This usually includes going to the beach, a picnic, the PNE, sleep overs... etc. Other goals can be encouraged such as reading a certain number of books, passing levels in swimming, or even working on personal improvement and the habits they struggle with.

Hot off the debut of our first ever Home & Garden Issue, our Marketing & Events Manager Lindsay worked on putting together a fun and interactive event that literally brought our magazine to life. Our event sure left a smile on our faces and a sparkle in our hearts!

On Sunday, May 26th the Lower Mainland came out to Dell Anno Home Design’s stunning showroom in their Sparkling Sunday best and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon filled with bubbles, delicious brunch bites, and our Sparkle Marketplace made up of local retailers and businesses. It was a fabulous afternoon that brought together our community and gave us all 14

of the warm and fuzzies. We had a live cooking demo from White Table Catering that taught our guests how to create a fresh chimichurri recipe, an interactive floral tablescape demo from Deborah Lee Designs and a live performance by Chloe M Music, who captivated our guests with her beautiful voice and her soulful vibes. Guests treated themselves in our Sparkle Marketplace, where they shopped pieces from local jewelry, accessories, beauty essentials and home décor pieces. Attendees got their pick of ILHSV’s exclusive fashion collection in our boutique filled with picture-perfect pieces just in time for the summer season. Our ILHSV events are never complete without sparkling details... so we were excited to have 5M Photobooth, a Nespresso Station, Hayes Sweets’ treats, and a charity prize raffle with all proceeds going to the BC Women’s Hospital. Thank you to our incredibly supportive community, our creative partners and our dedicated team who helped make our Sunday Brunch a sparkling success!

How do you want people to feel while watching you perform? Uplifted, inspired, hopeful and joyful! What do you think we need to see more of in the music industry? Music that inspires and helps people find truth and love in their journey.

MORGAN AWARD-WINNING MUSIC ARTIST & DJ

How do you strive to see results in your Mind, Body, and Soul in your life? I have strong faith and that guides me on a daily basis to take care of myself, be good to others and also focus on the needs of each day by day. I am making more long term decisions, which are not quick and easy but very soul rewarding.

You may have met this talented and multifaceted woman at our Sparkling Sunday Event where she not only DJ’d, but wowed the crowd with her amazing singing voice. We are so pleased to share Chloe Morgan’s story as we will be featuring her talent at a number of upcoming ILHSV events.

Where do you receive inspiration from when creating music? By listening to different music – especially gospel and new mainstream sounds. Anything that uplifts and energizes my spirit. I feel it’s important to place myself in the right environment to create, I love nature! Where is your soul guiding you with the growth of your brand in the future? I am stepping more into my call and purpose. I know I have to work extremely hard to achieve certain goals, but I feel it’s so important when what we do, helps others in the process. What advice do you have for someone who is afraid to chase their dreams? Fear shouldn’t be a driving factor. If the desire is in your heart, it has been placed there for a reason. Choose faith and let love drive you to work hard and the path will unfold when it’s for you.

Growing up in England, Chloe Morgan was on stage from the age of 5 – singing, acting, dancing, playing the piano and violin. She has always known that this was what she was born to do. She was awarded a scholarship to London Studios Centre Performing Arts College, which sculpted her talent and gave her a strong musical foundation. In her 2nd year of college, she landed a British TV show – Popstars: The Rivals. The experience and exposure lead her to sign a record deal as part of a girl group with Warner Brothers, called Clea. With the group, Chloe toured the UK as the supporting act to Daniel Beddingfield and boy band, “Blue”, performing on many radio and television programs along the way. After the Clea experience, Chloe decided to pursue a solo career. She began writing and composing original music by the piano. Moving to Vancouver, she continued making music, while waitressing to support herself. She travelled back and forth to LA, recording in the studio and performing in Vancouver. She began to struggle and after a series of choices where she admittedly hit rock bottom, decided to ‘start life over’, back in the UK at the end of 2014. It was then that Chloe decided that she wanted to DJ and began to channel her energy into her passion. Within a year of recovery and hard work, she returned to Vancouver and has seen her career as a DJ/Singer take off!

How would you describe your DJ style? I have branded a new and unique style as a DJ, merging live vocals & instrumentation into sets with genres from Dance, House, Top 40, Funk n Soul, Hip Hop, R&B, Old School and my own original music creating sounds of elevation and positivity.

You are a Momma-to-be, what do you hope your baby learns from watching his or her momma at work and in life? I hope my child will be inspired by the way I live my life and develop great character and work ethic. Talent may get you so far, but character sustains you. To be a kind and thoughtful person and difference maker in society.

Being a woman in a heavily male dominated industry, have you experienced any obstacles? If so, how have you overcome them? For sure! But what I learnt was to become really good at what I do and not just rely on my outward appearance to get me places, I want to be respected as an artist. Staying focused on my call and not get distracted by any negativity has really helped.

Where can we see you performing? Tell us about some upcoming events this summer. I’m creating my own event, which will officially launch in July called “Saturday Soul Brunch”! This will be a time of elevation and uplifting music with guest speakers, music artists, great food and sponsors and I will be partnering with various charities I believe in. You can also check out my website chloemorganmusic.com for all other upcoming events!

C OVER

S TORY

“Your soul is your essence, your personality, and your special gift that’s singular to you; and your body is the sacred carrier of it while you’re on earth. These are two of the ONLY things you’ll ever truly own, so they are prize possessions to look after with care.”

YUOLOGY

Tonia Mattu is the beautiful soul behind the life-changing business YUOLOGY, the study of you. Created to support the modern woman in transition to gain confidence, clarity, and courage to design her dream life. Tonia’s journey began as a young girl growing up in a small town on Vancouver Island, where everyone knew each other and creativity was a must to entertain themselves through the days. She craved adventure and described herself as a ‘sweet tomboy’, who recalls spending hours with her older brother in the forest playing cops and robbers, building tree forts, and riding bikes. Her favourite activity foreshadowed the life she was going to create as an adult – going door to door and chatting with elderly neighbours. Her love for deep conversation about life and connection began early. Tonia would tell her Mom that she knew a trick to make people’s cheeks rosy – “ask them about their kids, grandkids, life and careers before retirement, and they would instantly smile and become happy.” It was this natural ability to bring out the joy in others that was felt by us on our first encounter with Tonia, she simply exudes positive energy and her smile lights up a room. Three words best to describe her are authentic, adventurous, and serendipitous – qualities that we felt speak so wholeheartedly to our Body & Soul Issue and are sure to inspire the readers the same way we have been inspired following along her journey. Like many of us, Tonia has gone through many wins, but has also been faced with challenges in her lifetime. She reminds us that no matter the struggle – job loss, heartbreak, health issues, loss of a loved one – you’ll always have your soul and not an ounce of it is dependent on anyone’s expectation of you. “It’s all yours, and it’s your responsibility to do whatever you can to share it with the world.” She has taken that desire to share it with the world quite literally, as she has travelled to over 30 countries. Just like that 6 year old girl who went door to door for deep conversation, her ‘neighbourhood’ has just grown to the world now. Tonia believes travel is the best way to uncover your soul and unleash the parts that you’ve hidden in fear of failure or judgement. She shares, “travel feels like an expressive, adventurous real life movie, sprinkled with serendipity.” Her intuition has always led her in life and brought her to a career destination of creating the business of YUOLOGY – the study of you!

“TO BE ZEN IS TO BE PEACEFUL AND RELAXED. ON DAYS WHERE I GET OUT OF ALIGNMENT OR STUCK IN MY DOUBTS AND FEARS, WHAT HELPS ME GET BACK ON TRACK AND INTO A POSITIVE VIBE ARE MOVEMENT, HEALTHY EATING, AND CONNECTION.”

What one piece of advice would you give to the child version of yourself? Your authenticity is your power. It will always be with you (no matter what happens to you) and it’ll help you connect with people more deeply, become compassionate, and relatable. It’s all people really want from you, and it’s the best quality to look for in the people you choose to spend your time with. What is your fitness philosophy? My fitness philosophy is variety and to enjoy what you’re doing. I literally get excited to workout, because I have fun when I go. I often know (or get to know) the instructors and people in the classes, and if I’m doing a solo workout, I treat myself to a sauna and steam afterwards. I also listen to killer music that pumps me up and makes me feel like I can take on the world. What advice would you have for a woman that wants to make a health transformation, but doesn’t know where to start? Any transformation that you’re looking to make starts with awareness of what’s been happening (self sabotage, limiting beliefs, avoidance behaviour, etc.) and acceptance of your current situation. Without these two foundational steps, a transformation can’t begin. It’s easy to say you want to make a health transformation, but first you need to know what’s been stopping you, and WHY this intention is important to you, so you can set yourself up to succeed.

TONIA TALKS BODY & SOUL Body & Soul practices are a huge part of my daily routine and influence my overall well-being in such positive ways. Sound healing is a big part of my life at the moment. I have Tibetan singing bowls that I play in the morning, while I do a meditation or simple personal prayer of gratitude and intention setting. The singling bowls carry a specific sound frequency that tap into and align each one of your chakras, so I choose what I want to focus on each day, depending on how I’m feeling and what I’m doing. From there, I read a lesson in ‘A Course in Miracles’, and ironically (or serendipitously, depending on your perspective) the learning always seems to apply to my life at the given moment. I journal about how I interpret it, and what I’m going to do about it. I also try to increase my heart rate and sweat before the day begins. Whether I go for a quick run, do a Kundalini practice, or even ten minutes of yoga in my living room, I’ll find a way to get in some movement before I sit down for any long period of time. And I NEVER leave the house without first having my green juice (celery, cucumber, spinach and lemon, or a scoop of greens powder in water) and a good cup of coffee that I brew and drink while I get ready. Oh, and I always have a few crystals at arms reach, or in my purse, while I’m on the go. Amethyst, rose quartz and blue agate are my current faves – each has a unique purpose and meaning.

How important is confidence in life? Confidence is the fundamental ingredient to success. You can’t truly be successful if you aren’t an authentic version of yourself, and that requires confidence. Tell us about the impactful affect that sound bowls have had on you. I’ve always loved the power of sound and the impact it has on my energy. I went to my first sound bath ceremony in Bali almost 10 years ago and had a transformative experience, but I didn’t make it part of my daily practice until recently. This past summer, I had a nudge from my intuition to purchase a set of Tibetan singing bowls so I could learn how to play on my own. The bowls arrived September 6th, and two days later, my brother passed suddenly. This is when I started the practice of sound healing. It’s helped me ground my energy and connect with my inner power – my 7 chakras (aka energy centers within your body). This has helped me feel connected with my brother and myself on the deepest level I’ve ever experienced.

“THE MOST REWARDING PART OF YUOLOGY IS WITNESSING THE TRANSFORMATION OF WOMEN BECOMING THEIR BOLDEST, MOST CONFIDENT SELVES. IT’S LIKE MEETING A NEW PERSON AFTER THEY HAVE THEIR BIG MOMENT OF STEPPING INTO THEIR AUTHENTIC POWER, AND THERE’S REALLY NOTHING MORE REWARDING THAN THAT.”

” SUCCESS STARTS THE

MOMENT YOU CHOOSE TO BE YOU. After young adulthood with success in customer service and sales, I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Entrepreneurial Management and a Diploma in Marketing. I then moved to Vancouver landing a job in sports media sales, excelling to the top and crushing goals. But, something in me (again, my intuition) was telling me that I was meant for more than the life I was living. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself and impact more people in a positive way. I felt stuck and scared and had no idea what to do, so I decided to pack my bags and move to New York City. This was the first time in my entire life where I felt like I truly belonged somewhere. I could be myself wholeheartedly, meet people from around the world everyday, and new opportunities were endless. I also soon realized that I wasn’t going to find myself in anything external from me, like a new city, job or relationship, and that the answers that I was looking for were within me – which ultimately led to YUOLOGY, the study of you. I spent the next 10 years in personal development, self discovery and learning, while I became a certified coach, NLP practitioner, and worked as a consultant on Wall Street in confidence building and mindset motivation, started a career transition business, and truly got to know myself and people. This is where I came to understand that success can only be achieved when you are being your true authentic self, and I made it my goal to create a way for people to go within, discover their passion, and what makes them come alive, so they can design a life that’s aligned with their soul. YUOLOGY, YuSchool supports this journey to success by studying yourself and connecting to 5 internal elements: Vulnerability, Authenticity, Curiosity, Intention and Intuition. We currently have over 500 graduates who have transformed their lives and my vision is to reach more people and make a bigger impact in the lives of women around the world.

Okay, you guys! Today I FINALLY get to share one of my most FAVOURITE summer drink recipes with you! It’s my own spin on Lemonade and I can’t believe I haven’t been making this my entire LIFE. Such a summery tropical twist on your average lemonade. Every time I drink it, I can just picture myself … toes in the water … ass in the sand, not a worry in the world, a coconut lemonade in my hand … life is good today... life is good today. You get the drift! It’s basically an oasis in a glass!

COCONUT LEMONADE 24 SUMMER 2019 | ilikeherstylevancouver.com

Photos: Provided by Team Jilly, Mackenzie Dempsey @mackenziejdempsey

J I L LY ’ S S U M M E R S I P The beauty about this recipe is it tastes amazing as a Mocktail BUT if you’re planning on getting a little silly poolside you can add some vodka to it as well to shake things up a bit!! You know that’s what I’ll be doing this summer!! Because as they say … no great story ever started with a salad! LOL!!

COCONUT LEMONADE Ingredients (makes one pitcher): 6 organic squeezed lemons 1/2 cup simple syrup 1/2 can of coconut cream 4 cups of Water Simple Syrup Ingredients: Zest from 1 lemon 1 cup organic cane sugar (or any sugar you would like to use!) 1 cup water Method: 1. Start by zesting one lemon, set aside. 2. Squeeze all lemon juice into your desired pitcher. 3. Combine lemon zest, 1 cup cane sugar and 1 cup of water to a small pot for the simple syrup. Bring to boil then simmer until mixture starts to thicken. Turn heat off and let sit to thicken further. 4. Pour one full can of coconut cream into a blender and blend until smooth. 5. Stir in 1/2 cup of simple syrup mixture to your lemon juice in your pitcher. 6. Add 1/2 of the blended coconut cream to the lemon juice and simple syrup in your pitcher. Stir until smooth. 7. Add up to four cups of water to your pitcher but make sure to taste after every cup and stop adding water when your taste buds are happy as some people prefer sweet lemonade and other’s don’t! 8. Fill glasses with fresh ice and the coconut lemonade. Garnish with lemon or pineapple slices and ENJOY!

BETTER TOGETHER

FITNESS TIPS FOR PAIRS CONNECT ON SOCIAL @mandygilldotcom

Why work out alone when you can harness the energy, motivation and fun of a partner? If I could only suggest two things to improve your health, I’d suggest exercising and spending quality time with a friend, so why not do it at the same time! More and more we’re seeing healthy habits being created around friends doing a workout together and grabbing a coffee or a bite to eat after. Talk about the perfect combo! As we head into the beautiful weather of summer, grab your workout buddy, get outside, get sweaty, and get started with this workout to have you seeing and feeling the best results you’re oh-so capable of!

In this workout the traditional sit-up, squat, and lunge gets an upgrade when you use a medicine ball to add extra resistance. You’ll feel more challenged as you build stronger muscles. The shape of these weighted balls makes them perfect for tossing as you build strength/ endurance, increase your metabolism, and have fun with your partner along the way. This workout is best when repeated for 3-5 rounds to obtain maximum benefits.

MEDICINE BALL PA RT N E R S I T - U P S Sit on the floor and face your partner with your feet about 8-12 inches apart. Both partners bend their knees, with knees placed on either side of the ground. One partner holds the medicine ball. The partner holding the ball lowers down to perform the sit-up (while the other partner does one at the same time with no weight). As the partner with the ball rises, he/she tosses it to the partner who didn’t have the ball. The partner catches the ball and immediately lowers back to the mat (while the partner now without the ball still performs a sit-up at the same time in unison). Continue to toss the ball back and forth for 12-20 reps total, dependent on skill level.

M E D I C I N E B A L L PA RT N E R S QUAT & TO S S Stand facing your partner about 5-6 feet apart, set up with the medicine ball at your chest. Stand with feet about hip-width apart and toes pointed outward slightly. Begin the exercise with both the partner with and without the ball squatting down so that your thighs are parallel with the ground and knees do not pass your toes. Both partners will drive from their heels, pushing themselves out of the squat, and the partner with the ball will toss it overhead to the partner without the ball. Continue to toss the ball back and forth for 12-20 reps total, dependent on skill level.

SUGARING IS FOR EVERYBODY WHAT IS SUGARING? Natural eco-friendly body hair removal Made of Sugar, Lemon & Water No sticks or strips

PA RT N E R P L A N K H I G H F I V E Partners will set up in pushup position facing each other about three feet apart. Both partners give a high five by lifting the opposite hand from their partner to high five in the middle. Alternate high fives for a total of 12-20 reps. Each partner will get the best out of this movement by keeping their core tight (think belly button pulled towards spine and glutes squeezed).

M E D I C I N E B A L L PA RT N E R LU N G E & TO S S Begin standing 8-10 feet across from your partner. The partner with the medicine ball will step forward in a lunge with their right leg (the partner without the ball will perform a lunge at the same time with the opposite leg). Once standing out of the lunge, the partner with the ball will pass the ball at chest level to the partner who didn’t have the ball. The partner now catching the ball will step forward with the right foot and do the same exercise. Continue to toss the ball back and forth for 12-20 reps per side total, dependent on skill level.

TAYLOR HUI BODY & SOUL WITH ‘BEAYOUTIFUL’ FOUNDER Taylor Hui is a social entrepreneur at heart, with an obsession for making a difference through business ventures. She is the founder of BeaYOUtiful, a non-profit organization which provides confidence classes for young girls in elementary schools, and The Roster, a clothing line which provides everyday essentials for women to feel confident in.

Taylor Hui describes herself as someone who craves creativity and connection, constantly in motion towards becoming the best version of herself. She loves inspiring others and being inspired.

For Taylor – family is everything. She grew up in a family-owned business, working at her parent’s garden and floral shop. Understanding hard-work ethic, diligence and creativity allowed her to learn in ways beyond classroom education. Their actions also taught her to enjoy life – Work hard. Play harder. Work to make memories and experiences. Life is too short to not enjoy it. At 16, Taylor began acting and much to her parent’s disapproval she moved to Thailand at 18 when she landed her first modelling contract. She shares, “Traveling and building a life overseas gave me new perspective; my lens was permanently changed after being immersed in so many incredible cultures from around the world. It has taught me gratitude and has given light on the privilege I experience every day to live in this beautiful country.” The BeaYOUtiful Foundation began as a passion project for Taylor 5 years ago. As a youth, Taylor had been a victim of cyber bullying and had three friends with eating disorders in their teens. She watched her peers take down one another, in order to raise their own self-esteem, a backwards and broken system that she wanted to change. Today, the organization has now worked with 500+ girls between the ages of 8-14 in their six-week self-esteem programs, confidence bootcamps, and the annual Inspired by HER conference. It is an education in values that are not traditionally taught in school but are essential in life. It is a way to empower young girls with tools to know they are enough. They are resilient, worthy and beautiful.

BeaYoutiful

As the BeaYOUtiful program expanded, Taylor built a “Roster” of people who believed in helping inspire the next generation of young women. With this, she launched a unisex T-shirt line with a team of influencers to raise awareness and funding for the programs. Each shirt had a subtle quote, reminding those of their value and beauty. The response from the public was overwhelming and after selling out of the tees in less than two-weeks, people were asking for more! Today ‘The Roster’ is an established women’s brand in Canada & the USA that focuses on simplistic designs that are body positive and inclusive. For every sale 10% is donated to the BeaYOUtiful Foundation, helping continue to fund confidence classes.

Through this journey of entrepreneurship, I have met life -long friends and built a tribe that I am privileged to call my family. I wouldn’t be where I am without the connections that I have made with those who believe in the same mission: create a world where all women feel beautiful and respected.

TAYLOR’S BODY & SOUL PRACTICES: FAMILY. Spend time with family. Laugh with family. Learn with and from your family. Experience life with your family. Isn’t that what life is all about anyways? EAT. With joy. Clean eating and intaking all my daily nutrients are important, but that doesn’t mean removing the flavor from life. My body and soul feel good after I eat a bowl of ice cream or indulge in a cheesy pasta occasionally... nourish your body with the things you love. MENTOR. I live my greatest passion when inspiring the young girls, through the BeaYOUtiful Foundation we teach self-love and confidence. The connection I build is priceless, and the role as a mentor is positively impacting. ENTREPRENEURSHIP. Maybe I am a workaholic, but one of my greatest forms of nourishment for my body and soul, is the process of building my businesses. Owning a business has brought me much failure and success, but nothing compares with the incredible people I have met along the way. BEACH. 99% of the time you can find me on a beach. It’s the place I call home.

What is your daily routine must? Dancing. For those that know me, it comes to no surprise that I am always the first one on the dance floor, and that includes my kitchen. My boyfriend always says that every morning he gets a full Broadway show, because I am constantly moving and singing (not well I might add). It makes me happy to move my body and feel alive! How do you deal with pressure for ‘perfection’ in the modelling industry? Growing up, I remember my Mom instilling the values in me to love my body for what it is and be confident in the things that make me unique. I started modelling when I was 18, which is quite old in the industry, but in my opinion it was the perfect time to start because when I landed my first contract, I already felt grounded in who I was; I could appreciate my body for the things it allowed me to do every day, like breathe, walk and run. This perspective allowed me to feel confident in my body and not let the industry destroy my self-esteem.

AT 18, I REMEMBER ONE AGENCY TELLING ME MY THIGHS WERE TOO BIG, SO I HAD TO STOP RUNNING AND SKATING AND LOSE THE MUSCLE MASS. I CRINGED AT THE IDEA THAT THEY THOUGHT A STRONG BODY WASN’T A BEAUTIFUL ONE. I TOLD THEM, “YOU EITHER EMBRACE MY BODY FOR WHAT IT IS, OR I WILL FIND ANOTHER AGENCY TO WORK FOR BECAUSE THIS IS WHO I AM”. STAND UP FOR YOUR BODY - IT DESERVES YOUR KINDNESS.

What is the biggest cause for concern for the girls of our next generation? There has always been the high school bully, the “mean girls”, and the unachievable magazine covers that feed us false ideals of beauty. Throw the world of social media into the mix, and you have an even more complex system. Social comparison has reached a new extreme with social media platforms, and it is tough for a young girl to navigate in the world today and determine what is reality. Girls we teach at the age of 8 already have Instagram, and that is terrifying to me. The content out there can be deceiving, and a large part of my organization’s programming now focuses on media literacy, and how to deal with consuming content that is filled with photoshop, filters and “highlight reel” lifestyles. Are you one to follow your intuition and has it ever led you in the wrong direction? I can’t think of a time when I didn’t follow my intuition, as it really comes down to following your heart and passion. It’s that feeling when you know something is meant to be, and the thought of “what could be” if you didn’t take the chance or opportunity. I think you just must trust yourself and know that your intuition will take you in the right direction. Manifest the positive and that is what will come. What do we need more of in this world? Love. You can never have or give enough. How would you define success? Success is failure, embracing the mistakes you made and growing from them to become a stronger, better version of yourself. Success is achieving a goal, not for anyone else’s happiness but your own. Success is waking up every day and being grateful. 35

ANSWER THIS: What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning? I think most of you just answered, “check my phone,” which I know I am definitely guilty of. I also know that there are so many better ways to start my morning. Wouldn’t you agree? Just over a year ago, I made the decision to join a soccer team. I hadn’t played since elementary school, and it was one of the best things I could have done for myself. It has made me so much more aware of my health and how much my body was lacking daily exercise. It’s made me feel like I should tell everyone to go out and join a team, but I know that’s not a reality. So, what is your reality? Do you think you can take a few minutes out of every morning, put the phone aside, and move your body? My friend Lisa, a not-so-typical online health coach at Body Zone Fitness, can help. Since working with her and figuring out WHY I want to improve my health and wellness, I’ve found myself so much more motivated and encouraged to stay on track. We’ve teamed up and put together 6 stretches that are good for every age and ability level. You can do these at home and at any time of day... all it takes is the commitment to move your body.

H E R E ‘ S W H AT L I S A H A D TO S AY: Q : Why do you find it important to stretch in the morning?

Having a morning routine is like having cashew milk in my coffee – it makes my day flow better and gives me clarity. We’ve all heard that if you can win the morning, you can win the day. I have found that having a morning routine allows me to have positive momentum, rather than being reactive. A lot of us are victims to waking up first thing in the morning, grabbing our phones and reacting to our day. I spend my entire day reacting, which is why I try to spend my morning proactively taking care of myself, which includes my morning stretches. 44

During my morning stretches, I focus on my breathing, goals for the day, and meditation. The headspace app is a great resource to put on while completing your stretches. I take this time to be present and connect with my body before I have to run around chasing kids and training clients for the rest of my day. Q : Why How do you stay motivated?

I have clients that ask me all the time “Lisa, how that heck do you stay so motivated?” The answer is that I don’t stay motivated - I just keep focusing on my WHY. Determining and creating your WHY is the single most important thing you can do for yourself before starting any journey. Set an emotional and realistic answer as to why you want to achieve that goal in the first place. Having a strong enough “why” will make you jump out of bed in the morning. It will set you on the right path when motivation is running low or on those days where you just don’t feel like doing anything. I also realize I have a choice. I have a choice to stay where I am right now and own that decision or I have a choice to evolve. I have the ability to change my life, make it better and move with ease. And only I can take me there. 1 6 S T R E TC H E S TO S TA RT Y O U R M O R N I N G This is my go-to morning stretch routine to get my body feeling refreshed as well as help alleviate hip, shoulder and back pain. 1. Frog Pose: This one is my favourite stretches of all time. Give it a try and you will soon see why I love it so much! Begin in child’s pose, placing your knees away from the body. Slowly lift your hips forward and lower them to the floor, creating a stretch across the inner hip region and pelvic floor. Drop your chest and arms to the floor to a laying position, while lightly putting pressure to lower your hips. Breath in for 6 counts and exhale for 8 counts. Hold this position for 30-45 seconds. Repeat 3x.

2

2. Lower Back Twist: This movement not only helps stretch your lower back but also your glutes, which can tighten when you’re experiencing lower back issues, ultimately causing more pain. Begin by lying on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Extend your arms out to the side in a “T” position. Keep your shoulders on the ground as you gently roll one knee to one side while keeping the other leg straight. Stay here 20 to 30 seconds, then return to the starting position and repeat on the other side. 3. Overhead reaches: Because we sit all day, our upper body, especially our lats, can get very tight. A tight upper body can lead to poor posture, and this stretch will address that. This is also super helpful for momma’s with little ones who carry kids all day. Begin in a standing position, feet shoulder width apart. Place hands above the head and lock fingers together. Stretch and reach your hands away from the body and slightly pull your hands in one direction to the side. Hold for 20 seconds, and repeat on the other side.

3

4. Lunge Stretch: If those hips flexors are tight, then this is the stretch you are looking for. Stand with your feet together. Step forward with your right leg and extend your left leg behind you. Now, lower your left knee to the ground. Keep your front knee directly above your ankle. You will feel the stretch in your left hip flexor. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg.

4

5. Downward-Facing Dog Pose: This classic yoga pose helps open up the hips, relaxes your lower back, and centres your entire body. Come onto the floor on your hands and knees. Set your knees directly below your hips and your hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Exhale and lift your knees away from the floor. At first, keep the knees slightly bent, and the heels lifted away from the floor. Take a deep breath in, then exhale while you pull your hips up toward the ceiling, straightening out your legs, and driving your heels toward the floor as far as you can. Alternatively, you can bend one knee at a time to ease into the stretch more effectively. Hold Down Dog for 5-10 or more breaths, release onto the knees to come out of the posture.

5

6. Cobra: Lie on your belly with your legs hips-width distance apart. Place your hands below your shoulders. Exhale as you lift your head up off the ground, press your torso up and keep your hips and thighs on the ground. Gently arch your lower back and gaze forward or slightly up towards the ceiling. Hold this pose for 30 seconds.

COMMUNICATION Q&A If you were to ask someone about issues in their relationship we’d bet you our bottom dollar that ‘Communication’ would fall somewhere in the top 3 of those answers. Why is it so hard?! We feel ya, sweet friend. We struggled (and still struggle!) with communication all the time. So –today is a round up of YOUR communication questions you submitted on social media! Let’s dive in.

Q: I have such a bad habit of running away

from conflict, how do you get past that?

Hey, we get it. One of us was – is – let’s be honest here, a runner, too! Real talk for ya: Gather your guts and stick it out – in slow motion. The key here is slow motion. Often, in conflict it can feel overwhelming and scary. It can make us feel like the only option to handle this threat is to abandon. However, how would it feel if you allowed yourself some space instead? What if you took an intentional 30 minute break to self soothe and came back to it then? What would it look like if you used pausing during conflict to lower the overwhelm? How would it feel if you pushed the limit from running away initially to a little longer? What about if you “role played” conflict in a practice setting so when it comes to the real show, you’re more prepared with vocabulary and skills? (Hint: All those questions are suggestions, sweet friend! Pick one and go for it!)

Q: What do you say to your partner when

they’ve shared something crazy?

Ooooooh nelly. The best way to respond when you don’t know what to say is, “Whew. I’m so glad you told me.” Then follow it up with a question to keep them talking, “How are you feeling about that?”. The goal here isn’t to have the ‘best’ response. That’s almost impossible. The goal here is to respond with empathy and kindness. To honour the trust and courage it took for them to share it. If you need time to process, ask for it! “Thank you for telling me that, can I have a couple minutes to process? I love you.” If you’re still unsure on how to respond, ask your partner! “Thank you for telling me this, I love you. How would you like me to respond right now?” They might have the answer for you!

Q: How to bring up heavier topics and productively

discuss them?

This is like a fine art. We have a freebie on our website (www.relationshipproject.org/category/freebies) called “Conversation Icebreakers” that gives some tips on starting

REAL -ATIONSHIP QUESTIONS?

the conversation and keeping it on track with prompts like, “Hey, can I share my thoughts with you about ____?” and “I feel like we’re at ends here, how can I be on your team?” The most important key to heavier and productive discussions to know is; they will not happen in one conversation. So prepare yourself to talk about it at least a handful of times! The second key to remind yourself is that you love them – it can be easy to forget that in the moment, right? The third is to pause when you need to; according to research, 20 minutes is the time needed to physiologically calm our systems from conflict, so start there.

Q: How do you get out of the predictable fight patterns? They do ‘this’, you do ‘that’ in reaction. Have a game plan. These patterns are just habits – we can change them! If these are patterns you’re both aware of and wanting to change, have a discussion outside of conflict on how you’d like to try responding next time. For example if one of you is a cusser and the other is a runner. Possible goals could be; partner one would like to limit cuss words and partner two would like to stay longer than 20 minutes in the conversation. Discuss ways you could help each other make that happen, how you could kindly support each other in the heat of conflict, and the way you’d like to stop and try again if you get off track. Keep in mind, this will take practice! Q: Whenever we have a conflict, it always feels

like we’re verbally blaming each other. Help!

We gotchu, we’re Jake and Tay and we’re blamers, too. (Haha!) Two points to make here. Number 1, according to Dr. Brene Brown, blaming is the discharge of discomfort and pain. What would that look like if you actually communicated those uncomfortable and painful feelings instead of blaming? Number 2, change “You” statements to “I” statements and “Absolute” statements (never/always) to “Accurate” statements (often/on Monday). Ex: “You never show up on time!” could be “I feel like our timelines often fall apart.” Followed up with sharing how that really makes you feel: “When that happens I feel like I’m not important to you and that sucks.” Whew. What a round up, hey? Listen, we all have communication speed bumps, it’s normal. So let’s take the weight of having to get everything ‘perfect’ off our shoulders – ‘cause what even is that anyway? Thank you to the brave hearted that submitted questions! We certainly loved diving in and hope you’ve got some more tools to run with.

Tell us, what should we tackle next? Let us know whatcha think and come say “Hey!” over in our corner of the inter web at @relationshipproject, we’d love to chat with ya.

THE POWER OF BUSINESS MASTERMINDS I’m excited to share the benefits of joining a business mastermind and how it can propel your business to the next level quicker than you ever thought possible. Almost exactly a year ago, I was excited about so many things that were happening within our community; the events we were hosting, the programs we were offering and the cities we were launching into as a brand. However, with that growth came new challenges and unknowns. I found myself wanting feedback on the decisions I was having to make as our business and community grew. I had always been curious about Masterminds as I had heard that some of the most successful business people I look up to have credited Masterminds for their growth and scaling of their businesses to the next level. I decided to join a Mastermind last June and since then, it has more than paid for itself. It has helped spark new ideas and avoid problems while also giving me support and accountability. The collective group has helped me see new income opportunities within my business that I could not have discovered on my own. So you may be wondering, what exactly is a Business Mastermind? A Business Mastermind is an intimate group of entrepreneurs who meet together (either virtually or in person) on a regular basis to discuss and offer support to each others’ businesses. A mastermind can include a combination of brainstorming, education, accountability, and support. Have you ever felt stuck in your business? Have you ever wanted feedback on projects you are working on? Maybe you want to diversify your income, increase your sales or launch a new product and just need help on how to market it, launch it, and save yourself time and money along the way.

BENEFITS OF JOINING A MASTERMIND • Feedback from members who will raise the bar and encourage you to live out your potential. • Ideas and solutions to business problems that you would not have found on your own. • Discover new income opportunities within your business. • Accomplish more in less time with the support of your mastermind group. • Accountability within the group to take the necessary action to achieve your goals. • Sharpen your communication and leadership skills. • Gain clarity on what you need to focus on in your business. • Create momentum and energy to sustain you through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. • Receive encouragement, support, and inspiration from group members. • Benefit from the education, experience and influence of people within your mastermind group. Curious to know more about Masterminds and how you can be part of one? We are re-launching our Business Babes Mastermind this SUMMER! Join our waitlist at www.businessbabescollective.com/mastermind and be the first to know when we open applications and begin interviews for the Business Babes Mastermind. We are looking for women who are ready to learn how to take their businesses to the next level, who desire community, and want to make an impact through their work.

Research shows that depriving yourself of little indulgences can actually raise your cortisol levels in your body, while letting yourself enjoy a treat helps keep your body in chill mode. Yes, my friends, chill mode is better for you! This bar is crafted in Purdys Factory Kitchen using a dedicated vegan-only area to ensure milk ingredients don’t come into contact with the chocolate. It’s made with 100% sustainable cocoa, like all of their chocolate and it doesn’t contain any genetically-modified ingredients. 54 SUMMER 2019 | ilikeherstylevancouver.com

I don’t have as much time to take care of my skin as I used to, but it’s one of the things we need to do to help us look healthier and (what we all want) younger! Collagen is something that we want and need more of as we age. Microneedling, also known as skin needling, is a procedure using a device covered with tiny, shallow needles that essentially poke holes in the skin’s surface. Creating these holes or ‘micro injury’ prompts the skin to stimulate collagen production – filling in fine lines and plumping the skin to help get that younger look. Microneedling is the perfect solution for patients with darker skin tones at risk for hyperpigmentation, or those who don’t want to avoid the sunlight for weeks. I tried it at Urban Body Laser and the experience was comfortable before, during and after the treatment. They also have a super cool ‘We Believe’ wall, full of statements that boost you up with positivity! We Believe in connecting and caring, in real results and testimonials, in being truthful and presenting realistic expectations. Pretty cool – check it out!
