the CELEBRATE & CREATE issue

FROM THE EDITOR Pop the Champagne... (and sparkling apple juice for moi), I Like Her Style Vancouver has hit 2 years full of unforgettable memories and 9 Issues of the magazine to document the journey. I am so excited to be kicking off Volume 3 with our Winter Celebrate & Create Issue! Gracing the cover is none other than yours truly and co-founder Kyla Getty! That’s right, we did it – we finally made the cover of our own magazine hehe! What better time to share our story and shed some light on the ride to get here than on this very special 2 year milestone! Its time to celebrate the life we have had together (as best friends and business partners) and create the dreams we hold for the future (oh boy, are there lots of those floating around). This is our year… and if it’s ours then it’s yours too, my friend! This media movement is not one that we ride alone, our community fuels us! Drum-roll please… we have an amazing line up of contributors for this next year and I cannot wait to introduce them to you (although, they need no introduction as they are local stars in my eyes). So, if you haven’t already sneaked a peek, they are: the undeniable inspiration, superwoman and fan fave: Jillian Harris. The lady who knows hot when she sees it: Nira Arora. The creative momma with soul and a heart of gold: Codi Lynn of Creative Wife & Joyful Worker. The couple that knows how to make our mouths water and tummies happy: White Table Catering. Lastly, the duo who is committed to love, and gives it to ya straight: The Relationship Project! Wow! It still blows me away every time I share this list as I am so grateful and can’t believe we are so lucky to have such talented and authentic partners. Speaking of exciting new partnerships... have your heard? ILHSV will be hitting the global sound waves with our quarterly PRIV Talks Podcast collab, where we get down to the good stuff – girl talk with no limits! See page left for details! Hold on, don’t go yet, there’s more! In this issue we embrace all things worth celebrating and harness the beauty of creation in both special events and in our lives. We have a stunning bridal feature that’ll make you swoon by the very talented Simply Sweet Photography and a fabulous line up of vendors alongside her. We then take it to one of our favourite bridal shops in town – Everything But The Groom! Say Yes To The Dress – that’s the goal for every Bride-To-Be and we have celebrity expert Monte Durham share his wisdom to get you there! What’s an issue without a powerhouse woman to celebrate, and this Winter we shine a light on our dear friend and Marketing & Communications Consultant, Tara Armstrong. Finally, we have beauty for your big day covered – Jasmine Hoffman & Hair By Lo share their top product picks and tips! All of this, and so much more! I love a new year – not only to create new beginnings, but also to reflect on the year behind you and to express gratitude for the person it has lead you to become today (even through all the tough times, lord knows we have all had them). I am eager to celebrate with all of you as you read through these pages and I feel empowered to create the year of our dreams together for 2019! I have so much to celebrate in the coming year with my sweet bundle of joy arriving this summer. I’ll be thrilled to introduce him or her to my incredible I Like Her Style Vancouver family to see why Mommy is blessed to have the career that she does (the lil nugget will also be a special part of it all!) Let’s celebrate!

There ain’t no party like a Pop-Up Party with I Like Her Style Vancouver and hostess extraordinaire: Little White House & Co! On October 26th, we celebrated the launch of our Fall Fashion & Styling Issue with Cover Girls Cece Krecsy & Natasha Isaak, the women behind the Little White House & Co. Our Magazine partners were welcomed to pop up in the space, offering a unique shopping experience with so much goodness all in one spot! Guests shared delightful sweet treats while shopping the vendor booths, sipping champagne in the Chit Chat Lounge, and testing their luck with a chance to win prizes! An Instagram Giveaway valued over $750 from our generous pop-up partners was won by the lovely Ginna of @thenewmercantile. One lucky lady won the most epic surprise while visiting during her lunch break with her Mom - a full makeover! Brianna Bourdon was styled from head to toe by the fashion maven, boutique owners – Cece and Natasha! Afterwards, Brianna was gifted a makeup glam session by Fort Langley neighbour Su Casa Spa. The prize was all wrapped up with a bow by the talented Brooklyn D Photography, who captured this beauty in her new look!

C R E AT E Y O U R C E L E B R AT I O N LO O K Celebrating her 19th year in Vancouver’s makeup industry, Jasmine Hoffman has rightfully become the authority on glamour!

Recognized as one of BC's top wedding makeup artists, she’s worked with celebs such as Jessica Alba, Katy Perry, Halle Berry, and Kaitlyn Bristowe. She is also the artist behind many of the photoshoots for this issue, including our cover story!

This is our Celebrate & Create issue – and with so many special events on the horizon, we went to Jasmine Hoffman for help on how to create the perfect celebratory look. So what’s in Jasmine’s special event makeup kit at the moment? Here are her tips, tricks & must-have beauty products right now!

LASHES Over the years, lashes have become a huge trend. I love local brands like Lady Lash Club and Dollar Lash Club for their selection of styles and quality.

Pro-Tip: Always trim your lashes so the band follows your natural lash line. Trim your lashes with a rounded corner so they don’t feel sharp.

Pro-Tip: Use a good quality glue so the lashes last all day. I love Shu Uemura Lash Glue. >> But my biggest tip when applying false eyelashes is: patience! Allow time for the lashes and glue to fully set before applying any liner or mascara otherwise they may lift later on.

STILA SHIMMER AND GLOW

I love this Shimmer Heights Mini Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow Set. It comes with the shades: kitten, cloud & twig. These are perfect to wear alone or paired with the glitter and glow shadows for extra sparkle. You can apply with fingers or a soft eye shadow brush. The texture is silky and dries fast – so it’s best to blend one eye at a time.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY PRODUCTS

This has become one of my favorite makeup lines! The Cream Shadows, Shadow Pencils and Eyeshadow Palettes have amazing textures and high quality pigments. One of my all-time favorite products is the Eyes To Mesmerize Cream Eyeshadow in Marie Antoinette. This shade works on all skin tones and is the perfect shadow to be used alone or layered into a smokey look.

TOO FACED NATURAL FACE PALETTE

The perfect palette with a mix of bronzer, highlight, and blush in neutral bronze and pink tones. Ideal for your celebration or everyday look. Great to take on vacation, keeping all of your colours together in one convenient palette!

@jasminehoffman

SETTING SPRAYS

Setting sprays are a great way to keep your make up lasting all day while toning down any powder residue. I love the Too Faced Unicorn Tears Refresh Mist. It has a soft fruity scent and gives a glow to the skin. Other favorites are the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray and K’pure Keep Going Energizing Essential Oil Spray.

I Like Her Style ... complimentary, sassy, fun and stylish. We brainstormed and listed countless name ideas for what would become this magazine and media movement... but we knew from the beginning that it had to be I Like Her Style. Now here we are – celebrating two years of magazine issues, and the brand that has unfolded to become all of the things we dreamed it would be. As many of you who have followed our brand closely will know, we are childhood friends who grew up together with countless creative endeavors under our belts. Originally, we lived across the street from one another. Kyla (being two years older than Jody) even attended her baby shower when she was born – and our stories have been entwined over the years since. From epic Barbie® playdates, to Jody standing up for Kyla as a bridesmaid - the constant in our friendship has been that we have grown together, always creating and dreaming – and always supporting one another. We have also grown together on our spiritual paths, encouraging each other to positively attract the things that fuel our souls, to set forth with intention – and to always trust the journey. The journey to create this magazine and media brand together was born from twists and turns in life, which led us to a pivotal moment where we went out on a limb together. Jody made the life-changing decision to leave the career that she had built, with over a decade in the fashion industry, to move back from Calgary to the Lower Mainland where the two grew up together. Kyla, who had an ad agency background and had previously published an Alberta-based womens magazine, was ready to come off of her 2-year maternity leave and get creative once again. Jody’s move was the tall order required to begin this business together. It was not taken lightly by either of us, but when it was decided to be a ‘go’... something ignited which can only be described as a flicker of magic. This magical energy that we shared in the months following as we dreamed up our vision for this brand was heart-fluttering. It was the kind of thing that keeps you up at night with a notebook in hand, jotting down endless visions and new ideas. It was the feeling of falling in love and being on the receiving end of pure unadulterated inspiration. Friends, when and if you are every fortunate to experience this sort of energy – we say to hold on tight... you are surely onto something amazing. And to share this with a lifelong friend? How lucky are we?

Behind the scenes: for better or for worse...

As all entrepreneurs who go into business together are recommended to do - we took the natural next step and moved in together! (Kidding about the ‘recommendation’.) For us at the time, it was necessary. So, when Jody arrived back to the Lower Mainland, she moved in with Kyla... along with her husband and 2 daughters. During this time, we were one big happy family with zero boundaries and absolutely no distinction between a work/life/friendship balance. There was however, a LOT of wine! We launched our brand on social media in August of 2016 and the very first issue hit circulation in January of 2017. A lot has changed since the early days of building the brand and getting our first magazine issue off of the ground. We have celebrated amazing partnerships with sensational women who have shared their stories and expertise in our issues. We have brought the magazine to life in an array of events. We have grown our business to include Lindsay Dent and Seilyn Diaz – the most lovely and supportive gals we could hope to have on our team. We have been featured on panels, in other publications, podcasts and more. It has certainly not all been smooth sailing. There have been ups, downs, and downright flops along this action-packed ride... but we are both so proud to see the shape it has taken and the community that has come together. It feels like just yesterday that we were toasting at our initial launch.

Fun Fact: Before launching I Like Her Style Vancouver, we intended to first launch a magazine that would be specific to Langley – where we were both living. We had hoped that it would be a great way to dip our toe into the world of publishing and grow our market on a smaller scale before diving into our master plan: I Like Her Style Vancouver, which would include the entire Lower Mainland. From the early beginnings, our Langley magazine concept was met with roadblocks galore! We found out a competing publication was also trying to get off of the ground at the same time, the locals weren’t as excited about the idea as we were, and we were repeatedly met with suggestions to think bigger than just one region. The writing was on the wall and all signs were pointing to us taking the leap. You have to know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em... and we decided to follow the direction that we were being pushed in. We launched ILHSV and haven’t looked back. Thanks to everyone for their tough love!

On working with a friend: We get asked a lot about what it’s like to work with a friend and if we recommend it. This is a tough one because the dynamics within friendships can be completely different depending on your personalities. Each duo is different! While we have a lot of similarities, we DO have a lot of differences, too. Taking a personality test and comparing our results has been absolutely invaluable, opening up a window into understanding how each other’s thought processes work... and what makes us tick! Above all else, our friendship is the non-negotiable - most important puzzle piece at the heart of all that we do. Over our 2+ years in business together, we have assessed and re-assessed how we work best. After getting the business off the ground as 50/50 partners who both shared overlapping tasks... (and sometimes ran around in circles!) we realized the need to re-evaluate. Jody took the lead as Owner and Editor. Kyla chose to move into the role of Creative Director, which allowed her to focus on her expertise in graphic design and visuals. We set ourselves up with a strategy for success, in our individual ‘genius zones’.

“Neither Jody or I have a sister. We grew up together from such a young age that we have been that for one another. We have countless inside jokes and we usually know what the other is thinking! It’s a very special thing to share a bond like that amongst women. Our team and our community is our sisterhood. This is a day and age where we embrace raw authenticity. It is our hope that through this media movement, we allow women to share themselves & their stories. We open up the doors to our friendship and invite all women inside.” – Kyla Getty

“We get asked a lot – ‘why a print magazine?’ In this era of social media and ‘roundthe-clock content at your fingertips, we celebrate all modes of media that are uplifting and inspirational. That is why we created this fabulous ‘Women’s Media Movement’. And though we have a blast publishing online and in video, our quarterly magazines in glossy print are such a gift. Kyla and I are both traditional pen-and-paper girls. We love planners, notebooks and greeting cards. There’s absolutely nothing like cuddling up with a good magazine and flipping through the pages to uncover the treasures found inside. Being able to publish in print is something that I am exceptionally proud of. We are so grateful to our advertisers and supporters over the past two years who have allowed us to keep our print issues flowing ‘hot off of the press’ and into the hands of our readers.” – Jody Belanger

My favourite thing about working with ILHSV is getting the opportunity to meet and work with incredibly inspiring and ambitious women in Vancouver. The amount of support, love and respect we have for one another is absolutely unbelievable. I sometimes have to pinch myself as I could not feel any luckier to be a part of this team. It makes me feel like I have finally found my tribe of people who understand my truth, make me feel valuable and always encourage me to be myself without having to compromise my own values, goals or ambitions. – Lindsay Dent, Sales & Promotions Rep

Being part of I Like Her Style Vancouver has been an amazing journey of growth and relationship-building with wonderful like minded ladies. The best feeling for me personally comes from delivering the magazine to our advertisers – seeing their faces light up when they see their ads. It’s priceless. – Seilyn Diaz, Sales & Promotions Rep

Creating a business with the hope of making a mark in the vast landscape of Vancouver may feel like a daunting task. Let our story be an example to you that big dreams can come to life when you feel that spark that you just have to share with the world. The journey will never be on a one-way path down easy street. You may need to take a leap of faith, make tough decisions, and probably sacrifices, as well. You will need to learn to flex, edit, adapt and change it up. If you’re fortunate like us, you might get to share it all with someone remarkable – surrounded by the support of amazing people along the way. We’re oh-so-grateful for each chapter in this story and can’t wait to see what’s next! Happy 2 Years, Vancouver!

Over the Christmas holidays I was knee deep in Pinterest boards and exploring all the holiday feels, and that’s when I stumbled upon it, an absolutely stunning ornament made from popsicle sticks. That was it, popsicle sticks and a little hot glue held this creation together. That’s when I started to think about what I could create with popsicle sticks and how could I bring them to life. I loved that they are so durable, allowing you to add weight without damaging the structure. As my brain wheels started to turn I imagined up this floral heart garland with mini clothespins to hang pictures. I was onto something here.

Just a quick trip to the store, a few materials later and I was focused on creating this floral heart shaped garland. I found the first heart took me the most time, deciding where to place each flower and seeing what the overall look would become as I rearranged a few times. After that the rest was a breeze, I got into a groove and five hearts were done in no time. Each one fastened with a mini clothespin that is perfect for hanging your child’s artwork, family photos or anything else you love.

DIRECTIONS: MATERIALS: • Hot Glue Gun & Glue Sticks • Ribbon • Popsicle Sticks • Faux Florals and Greenery (pluck the flowers off the tops so you just have the heads) • Mini Clothespins

1. Grab four popsicles for each heart that you want to make. I made five hearts, using 20 popsicle sticks. For each heart you want to break in half 2 of the 4 popsicle sticks. These will create the arches of your heart. Hot glue gun the abrasive edges at the top to form a point. From there grab the two regular sized popsicle sticks and hot clue gun to the outsides to finish off your heart shape 2. Hot glue gun your mini clothespin onto the bottom point of your heart. Apply pressure to ensure it has a strong connection. 3. If using greenery apply that onto some areas around the heart, you can see in my final photo that I sparingly used mine just in a few places around the heart shape, not everywhere.

4. Apply florals on top of the greenery and popsicle sticks to fully cover the wood, or as desired. 5. Lay out your ribbon and place the hearts along with the desired places, allowing you to see and create a similar distance between each heart before fastening. Once arranged, hot glue gun each heart into place. Let set. 6. Hang in your home and attach some of your favorite photos, valentine cards, or drawings with the mini clothespins.

STAR OF TLC’S SAY YES TO THE DRESS SHARES TIPS & TRENDS

What are the hot new bridal trends we can look forward to in 2019? Bridal trends for 2019 seem to be a return to coverage with soft flowing skirts, buttons and bows. What are some trends you will be advising your clients to stay away from this season? The main things to stay away from are too tight or a bad fitting dress and any color on the gown as in belts or ribbons, monochromatic is the way to go. How would you describe the bridal style in Western Canada from your time spent here with Brides-To-Be? The difference in demographic is big everywhere, state side a CA bride will have a different dress and wedding then say a NY bride. I find Western Canadian brides are more likely to have an outdoor wedding, where state side we are seeing a return to more formal and seated dinners. When should a Bride-To-Be start wedding dress shopping? How far in advance from their wedding date? The Bride-To-Be should start looking 5-8 months out from the wedding date, once the location, time and date are secured. You want to make sure your dress matches your venue. What should the Bride-To-Be bring with them wedding dress shopping? The best thing for the Bride-To-Be to bring to her appointment is the shoe she is planning to wear on the wedding day or a heel height that is close to it.

What style of dress would you recommend for the following body types: The Circle, The Hourglass, The Rectangle, The Triangle, The Inverted Triangle? Lets face it the A-line is the most flattering fit for all body types. I recommend a bride try on every style – you never know what looks great on a hanger until you see it on yourself. What is your go-to favourite fabric for bridal gowns? My favorite fabric is a silk satin. I like the movement and it looks great in all styles of gowns, plus it's very bridal. Bridesmaids dresses – all matching or different styles? Short or long? Bride pays or the Bridesmaids buy their own? I'm seeing the bride help out with the purchase of the Maids dresses or pay them in full, but this is not the norm and should not be expected. There seems to be different styles on the maids and in the same color family. The big trend is neutral for the maids. How would you recommend accessorizing a bridal look? Accessorizing the bride – keep it simple for a daytime wedding and bring on the bling for after 5 o'clock. A veil is a must-have accessory for all brides. How important is it to wear the right under garments with your dress? Its very IMPORTANT to wear the right under garments be sure to follow the advice of the salon and seamstress.

See Monte in Langley, BC January 18-20 – Details Below!

Where can a bride save money if she is on a budget? Where do you insist that she NOT cut back on cost? This is where the bride and groom need to decide what's important to them and how they want their wedding to be remembered. To some brides and grooms, it’s all about the party and not so much about the ceremony. Others want the ceremony to the be best part with readings and flowers making a statement. I will tell you if the Bride is in a dress she loves, all her photos will be picture perfect.

How has Meghan Markle’s Royal Wedding Dress influenced upcoming bridal trends? The Royal Wedding has had a slight influence on brides choices in gowns. We are not seeing total coverage however there are more cap sleeves and higher necklines than in the past, with less adornment and more intricate detail on the gowns, and with less bling. Meaghan Markle, the now Duchess of Sussex has more brides wanting longer veils and tiaras, as well.

& Grooms es d ri B ll a g Wishin ing. Cheers! Happy P lann

TIPS FOR CREATING MEANINGFUL CELEBRATIONS AND NIGHTS TO REMEMBER AT HOME WITH WTC #1 | WELCOME GUESTS WITH A COCKTAIL

A welcome or signature cocktail is a great way to add a personalized touch to your bar service without having to provide too many options at the bar. Tool Tip: SERVING TRAY – Pre-pour drinks and display on a serving tray placed on a beverage cart or kitchen island to elevate the presentation by creating a “drink display”.

#2 | SELF-SERVE SODA WATER STATION

Offer guests a fun and interactive option by setting out a variety of soda water with fresh pressed juices and simple syrups. “With our infused water station being so popular over the last couple of years, we added soda water with juices to our offering. It also provides a great alternative to alcohol. Plus it’s healthy, fun and looks pretty too!”. Shown in photo: Soda Water Bar Station Tool Tip: BEVERAGE TUB – Chilling tubs are a great way to beautifully display drinks in a way that allows guests to help themselves. (Not to mention saving you a lot of fridge space!) Chilling Tub Shown: Pottery Barn

#3 | SERVE GUESTS SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT WHEN THEY ARRIVE

Interactive grazing stations and “meals in a bite” are popular entertaining food trends this year, focusing on the experience of eating. Cobb Salad bites are super simple and versatile for many types of celebrations. Shown in photo: Cobb Salad Bites. Tool Tip: WOODEN BOARD – Whether in our industrial kitchen or at home, wooden boards are a go-to for displaying our food. Charcuterie, main protein items, bread displays and appetizers are all great items to plate on wooden boards. They don’t chip, are a beautiful way to present food, and add variety to your platters. They also look great on your countertop, so you don’t have to worry about storage!

#4 | TAKE TIME TO STYLE & GARNISH THE FOOD

Give your guests a full experience! Remember, people eat with their eyes first, so make the food the highlight of the party. Garnish can be as simple as a carefully drizzled sauce or a pinch of well-placed herbs. Sometimes less is more. We prefer natural garnishes that are beautiful as well as tasty and we try not to over manipulate the food. The goal is to highlight it’s natural beauty and flavour. When in doubt add height for visual impact and dimension! Tool Tip: SQUEEZE BOTTLE, MANDOLIN AND MICROPLANE – Squeeze bottles help you to add a clean sophistication to your plating by drizzling sauces and coulis or fine drops of thicker items like aioli. They allow for better control and consistency. Mandolins don’t have to be expensive to be effective. A new sharp blade is the most important aspect, not a variety of attachments. Plastic mandolins are common in fine dining restaurants, rendering impressive, paper-thin garnishes. Microplanes allow for zest, chocolate shavings and other finishing touches.

#5 | SHARE THE DESSERT.

Bringing dessert to the table allows guests to share and serve each other while creating another social aspect to your evening. Serve up a variety of individual mini desserts on tiered cake stands or trays to allow guests to choose their own or encourage sharing by bringing whole desserts that guests can cut. Tool Tip: VARIOUS CAKE STANDS – Cake stands are a must-have in every kitchen. We use cake stands for everything! From displays, to charcuterie, to dessert or even to display bowls of sauces. Having various sized cake stands will help you create levels and dimension when displaying your food with minimal effort. @ilikeherstylevancouver | the CELEBRATE & CREATE issue

How is celebration present in your everyday life with a career in Marketing? Celebration is present everyday with a career in RESTAURANT marketing. People are always looking for a reason to celebrate – what better job is there than sharing places to celebrate over good food in some of the city’s most beautiful rooms.

THE ULTIMATE PARTY RECIPE: EQUAL PARTS FOOD AND DRINKS DASH OF GOOD MUSIC INVITE LIST TO TASTE

When creating a marketing strategy for a client, where do you begin? I always go experience my client’s establishment as a “secret shopper” before sitting down to a strategy meeting. Knowing how a regular customer experiences the client’s services are always are great starting point for planning.

I DON’T SEE MYSELF AS BEING MY OWN BOSS, BUT INSTEAD A BUSINESS OWNER. I HAVE MORE BOSSES NOW THAN EVER BEFORE – I’M NOW ACCOUNTABLE TO MANY INSTEAD OF JUST ONE! EVERY CLIENT IS MY BOSS.

What do you love most about working in the hospitality industry? To me there is nothing better than going out to a new restaurant, trying a new dish, becoming friends with your server, or sitting at the bar watching the bartenders make drinks. Have you ever watched the action happening in the kitchen or at the pass? It’s exciting! From holes in the wall to fine dining, to me, there is nothing better. I love being able to tell the story of these restaurants so that others can experience the thrill of them too. What has been the best compliment you have ever received from a client? A client recently told me they had never worked with anyone so efficient. For some reason that brought the biggest smile to my face.

You wear so many hats in your life, what is one constant value you bring throughout all of them? Integrity. Always.

How do you keep your creative juices flowing and get out of a creative rut? Drink wine. Just kidding (sort of).

What are some of your favourite dining spots in Vancouver? How about cocktails spots? Dessert Spots? The Victor, Savio Volpe, Coast, Nook, The Flying Pig, Giardino, and Nightingale are all go-tos for a fun dinner. Have you ever had the Society Cake or the Brookie at Honey Salt? Dessert heaven. Dinasty Dumpling House or Feast for Saturday mornings. Keefer Bar and D6 for cocktails. Five Guys for a burger.

I find other people inspiring - learning what they’ve done and what they had to do to get where they are today. I am constantly reaching out to people to meet for coffee and more often than not I leave a meeting with a refreshed outlook. I’ve also seemed to take up baking when I get stressed. Decorating cookies really seems to get the creative juices flowing!

Take a good look at your day and schedule tasks in a way that allows you to free up 30 minutes to 1 hour a day to invest in yourself and creating a happier and healthier you.

Your health is your greatest wealth. If you want to be healthier and happier, do not wait for ‘the right time’. The right time is NOW! Photo: @thisisitstudios

As a woman, you may tend to put everyone else before yourself as natural care-giver who loves helping others. That needs to change this year! If you do not take care of yourself, you will eventually become helpless to the one’s you love. Think about it. When you are on a flight and they educate us on what to do in case of an emergency, the guideline is for the mother to put on her own oxygen mask before her child’s. Makes you think right? It is time to view your health and happiness as an emergency situation this year. Finding that right partner to guide you in this new approach is so crucial to your success and at TurnFit they have a reputation for making their clients feel safe and supported. Where do you start? Let’s chat about some simple things that you can commit to that will act as a catalyst to a year of positive change. REALISTIC SCHEDULE – set a plan that you can realistically commit to. Being overly ambitious will lead to burn-out and disappointment. 80/20 RULE – a great long term healthy living goal is doing 80% of the things that are good for you (eating healthy, exercise, meditation) and then 20% can be spent doing the things that make us human (drinks with friends, pizza night, binge watching Netflix). STAY HYDRATED – commit to buying a new water bottle that never leaves your side and aim for 2-3 litres of water a day for increased hydration, energy, metabolism, and to help you make overall better food choices. BE KIND TO YOURSELF – stop those self-limiting thoughts and quiet that “inner bitch” who says things to you that you would never dare say to another human being. Re-train your brain to the new you who treats yourself right. At TurnFit, they believe in the power of Proactive Healthcare as it is way easier than being reactive to an injury or disease. Their health & fitness philosophy and training plans are catered to YOU specifically and produce results that will be life changing. C E L E B R AT E & C R E AT E F E AT U R E D AU T H O R S : M E G A N E DWA R D S & JANET REYNOLDS – ‘THE UND8ABLES’

Ahhhh yes, it’s that time of year yet again ladies! Valentine’s Day is on its way and wedding season will be in full force before we know it (we also just realized we need to start working on our summer bodies). We know the effect that this can have on oneself when single. You know the feeling – trying to pretend you didn’t see the handsome man pass you on the sidewalk with a bouquet of roses in hand on February 14th. Or ticking off “one guest” on the RSVP for your best friend’s wedding. Most of us (but probably all of us) have endured this at least once during our lifetime. Some of us are left asking ourselves, “why me?”

Well, we are two of those women, and trust us, we’ve been there! We are Megan Edwards and Janet Reynolds, also known as, “The Und8ables”. Where did the name come from, you ask? Maybe you didn’t, but we’ll tell you anyway! Throughout the last decade or so, we’ve been the ones sitting alone in the darkest corner at a wedding, binge eating chocolate on Valentine’s Day, buying ourselves flowers just to fill that empty space on our table (and perhaps in our hearts). There was a time when Megan was given a dozen long stem roses on Valentine’s Day; only to find out later that the guys mom had purchased them because he had been too busy playing video games. We have crawled through the trenches of singledom, often coming out unscathed, yet sometimes emerging with tears of frustration - hence the name “The Und8ables”. Trust us, we are actually date-able. We’re strong, career driven women with decently good hair and somewhat dewy skin. We knew we could either let these epic dating fails get us down; perhaps become hermits, or even cat ladies (not that there’s anything wrong with that!), but instead we took our woes to paper and wrote a book! “Girl it’s Not You (it’s definitely him)” is our labour of love. We put pen to paper, writing down our horrific dating experiences, as well as the experiences of numerous women in our lives. It was therapeutic; hearing the stories of fiercely strong, educated women, bonding over wine (a lot of wine), and coming to the realization that it wasn’t just us suffering from bad date-itis. So, to all of the other women out there who are worrying about this time of year, we have two words for you: GIRL POWER! Put on your best dress, get pampered, and live your best life. Be proud of who you are, and where you are in life. Kill it, like the amazing “Und8able” you are! email: theund8ables@gmail.com

5 Things To Stop Doing To Create An Exceptional Relationship Whew, how is it 2019 already? We are in just as much shock as you! There are so many things telling you to START this and that for the new year, but let’s make things easier by STOPPING a few habits. In the spirit of the new year, we’re sharing our top 5 things you should STOP doing this year to co-create the exceptional relationship you’ve been wishing for.

1. Blaming.

Let’s get real here. To quote our she-hero, Brene Brown, “Blaming is the discharge of pain and discomfort.” It’s not productive in relationships and in fact, is often damaging as a whole. Listen, we get it. It can be so satisfying to have a certain ‘cause’ for a problem. It can feel like a momentary sense of comfort knowing who’s fault it is, even if that means we’re blaming ourselves. But it’s not worth it. Try this: Identify your desire to blame in the situation and ask for a pause. Then reconvene in 20 (yes, twenty) minutes to discuss only how you feel. Then try gently apologizing for your responsibilities in the conflict. Then, if you feel heard, dissect the situation to see if there’s really an issue to be resolved or not. Trust us, it’s worth it.

2. Making fun – at their expense.

We all know those partners who are the ‘class clowns’, who love making others laugh and who might cross a line (or two) when it comes to making others chuckle. They might throw in a jab at their partners to keep the laughs going... y’know what we mean? Don’t think we’re just accusing the males here, females do it, too. In relationships, it’s our duty to protect our partners. That means never allowing them to be the butt of a joke, especially when it’s our own. We get it, they’re intended as jokes... light teasing, kidding even! But when it comes down to it, making fun is anything but light. It is corrosive to the foundation of trust in relationships and can cause hurt feelings, resentment, score keeping, and contempt. Ew.

3. Getting defensive.

Ah, our good friend the Ego. It’s our defense warrior whenever we feel threatened, hurt, or vulnerable. It’s not something we want to rid ourselves of, it can be a good thing! But when it comes to relationships, it’s often not. (Just to be clear we’re not talking about abusive or unsafe relationships.) When in conflict with our partners and that defensiveness begins to rear it’s head, stop. Try instead to take a break. Then, when your heart has stopped racing, ask yourself, “What do I feel threatened, hurt or vulnerable about?”. Is it fear? Is it pain? Is it confusion? Are you just plain hungry? Hey – that’s a thing! Get curious and really start to dive deeper when it comes to defensiveness. It’s a game changer. Photo: Lucky Studios

4. Letting your goals go.

How often have we conceded what we really want for the sake of our relationships? Now, before you think, “Not me!”, think again. That business you wanted to start but couldn’t find time for, waking up early to work out even when your partner doesn’t like to be bothered, settling for half goals because it’s just too much work to try to keep the standards where you wish they would be? Sound familiar? Yeah, us too. We were there and it sucked. We’ve discovered that in exceptional relationships, the partners communicate their goals clearly and support each other in achieving them – even when it takes effort or is inconvenient. Whoa, right? We’d suggest showing your partner this article and starting the conversation(s) around the goals you both have and what support would look like for the two of you. You’ve got this!

5. Turning away.

John Gottman, founder of The Gottman Institute, was able to predict with over 90% accuracy which couples would stay married over a 6 year period and which would divorce based on ONE THING. (Holy crap – what is the thing?!) According to his studies, couples who “Turned Towards” bids of affection 80% of the time or higher would stay married and those who did only 33% of the time or less, would not. According to the institute, “Once you start to get intentional about your bids (attempt from one partner to another for attention, affirmation, affection, or any other positive connection), you can start to “Turn Towards”. To “miss” a bid is to “turn away.” Turning away can be devastating.” So, that’s settled then, right? Don’t turn away! Alrighty, there you have it! Our top 5 things to STOP doing! What do you think? Will you try them out? Did we miss any? Please feel free to let us know and keep the conversation going over on our instagram @RelationshipProject! We’d love to hear from ya.

I know I wasn’t at the top of my cardio game towards the end of 2018! One of the main reasons this is my favourite is because of the digestion angle.
