the CREATIVIT Y ISSUE

FROM THE EDITORS One Fabulous Year of Style, Story-Sharing, and a Creative Spark. Happy New Year and welcome 2018! It's a shiny new year and oh, what a difference one year can make! One year ago on January 9, 2017 we launched our Premiere Magazine Issue! Today, we couldn't be more excited to introduce our very special 1st Anniversary Edition – our best yet!

It was Jody's birthday – May 22, 2016. As childhood friends, we wanted to celebrate the occasion together in a lovely and inspiring place. High tea and a stroll through the shops on Glover Road sounded like perfection! As we sat together, charmed by the sweet tea, sparkling rosé and delicious bites, we soaked in every detail of our surroundings and were struck by inspiration. We realized that one woman had lovingly created this unique place from her imagination and brought it to life for us all to enjoy. The realization shot through us like a spark that would flicker in the coming weeks and eventually become a flame. We now know that woman is Cheryl Krecsy. We would later meet her and her daughter Natasha along our journey. Now we have the honour to call them our friends. With a blend of fate, friends and sheer feminine force, we took that spark and built the brand I Like Her Style Vancouver. One year after the launch of our first issue, the excitement found on the edge of creation is still alive and well with every single issue, event and initiative we launch.

It wasn't so long ago that we sat together at The Little White House & Co. in historic Fort Langley. We were both at points in our lives where change was in the midst. At the time, we didn't yet know what that change would be.

Above: Founders Kyla & Jody at Little White House & Co. in Spring of 2016 before launching I Like Her Style Vancouver.

For our 1st Anniversary, we're filling these pages with women and words to inspire you to soar into the year with the creative energy to set and achieve your goals. Marking one year since we leaped into the world of creative media, what better theme for this issue than 'Creativity'? Featuring the dynamic Creative Team of Jillian Harris in this issue has been a true anniversary gift to us! Jillian is a mastermind lifestyle aficionado who is defining a whole new category of career without limits... where creativity is shared and celebrated. Her team of 7 powerhouse women have creative expertise that spans from design – to fashion – to food – to makeup – to business. We couldn't be more excited to have Team Jilly joining us in toasting our magazine's first year. Thank you to the readers and collaborators who have been part of the journey. May your creative spark burn and dazzle in 2018!

TEA WITH THE MAGAZINE'S QUEENS

AtLittle W hite House & Co.

In celebration of the place that originally sparked I Like Her Style Vancouver, we were delighted to join Little White House & Co.'s Cheryl Krecsy and Natasha Isaac in hosting 'Tea With The Magazine's Queens' on October 21, 2017. It was a cozy afternoon with amazing friends, all wearing shades of blush, white and gold in unity. When it comes to High Tea... nobody does it like our friends at LWH. It is simply a must-try experience! Our guest list included Cover Girls from the magazine's first year along with our Fall Fashion & Styling Issue Contributors and Featured Women. Sharing this special tearoom with our friends and partners allowed us to give a glimpse into the first day we spent here when we were struck by the dream that would become I Like Her Style Vancouver.

FUEL YOUR

CREATIVITY B Y J A N E L L E S AC C U C C I - B L E N Z C O F F E E M A R K E T I N G D I R E C TO R

1. Give yourself permission to have an idea that may not work. Perfectionism and creativity don’t work together in the exploratory phase. The most successful and creative people I know have a look of wonder in their eyes when they say, “What if we did this…?” Sometimes it may be the craziest idea – but if they built on that idea, it could work. No idea is a bad idea. 2. Clear your head. Get in tune with yourself. When are you the most creative? What were you doing last time you had a creative idea? I’m the most creative when I read blogs by entrepreneurs I admire or when I browse beautiful photography accounts on Instagram and then walk on the seawall or relax in a bath. If I just sit there and force myself to think creatively under pressure, the big idea probably won’t happen. 3. Look at things differently. Creativity is a mindset. Creativity is just about connecting ideas - which makes it a lot less intimidating. Steve Jobs said, “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask a creative person how they did something, they always feel a little bit guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something.” Janelle Saccucci is the Marketing Director at Blenz Coffee. Her day job is all about fueling creativity for business. She also uses her creativity to build her personal brand and blog. Here are her top 6 tips how to fuel creativity:

4. Have an inspiration folder and observe everything. If you look at my Instagram saved collections, I have a folder for just about everything that inspires me. I have a folder for witty captions for products, I have a folder for tactics influencers use to promote products, I have a folder for product photography, and about 25 more “inspo folders”. Instead of just looking at a photo on Instagram, think what resonated with you about that photo and be conscious of that. Creativity is also about changing the way you look at things. 5. Spend time with creative people. Creative people fuel creativity in others. There are so many talented women in Vancouver who have brought their ideas to fruition. Go for coffee with them (insert Blenz Coffee plug here). When I go for coffee with someone who I admire, I leave feeling energized by their ideas - and it gives me permission to act on my own ideas. 6. It’s not about having the idea - but acting on it. A creative idea is worthless if it’s just an idea. Trust yourself and go create. Self-expression doesn’t have a formula. It’s all about finding what works for you.

J I L L I A N H A R R I S C R EAT I V E T E A M

Real. Creative.

A television host, designer, blogger, lifestyle maven, and a passionate community advocate – Jillian Harris is her very own brand of celebrity. Her realistic outlook on life and open-book approach to sharing her brand through social media has redefined the way women present themselves in

business. She has proven that you can be vulnerable, yet still a powerful force. She has perfected the art of balancing relatable imperfections with sharing polished, creative ideas. Along with her Kelowna-based (and beyond) team, Jillian is continually innovating, designing, creating and finding ways to support the women who look to Team Jilly for a daily dose of inspiration.

16

Outside of her personal media brand, Jillian is known for appearing on the ABC television series The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, hosting HGTV's Love It or List It Vancouver, and the recent reality TV show: Jillian & Justin – filmed alongside her fiancé Justin Pasutto. She is mother to her son Leo and her fur baby boxer, Nacho. Balancing major brand partnerships, social media, and never-ceasing creative ideas with the demands of a thriving business takes a multi-faceted creative team. For our very first 'Creative Issue', we couldn't have imagined a more exciting group to feature than 'Team Jilly'. Meet Mackenzie, Shay, Mindy, Jillian, Tyler, Kaitlin and Tori. Each woman is an expert in her own right. Together, they form a team that has captured the interest of women across North America. They are stylish, savvy, relatable... they are a group of 7 'It Girl' media darlings that every woman wants to have a glass of wine with! How do they do it? What is their secret? And how did they each find their way into this leading edge career by Jillian's side? We are over the moon to be able to share just a bit more, along with some insider photos from their team building group trip to Hawaii.

On her life’s philosophy:

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.ˮ I stole that from Gretzky, but I do believe it. I take chances and I really over-trust. That has burned me many times, but has served me more times than not and I will continue to operate that way. Whenever I’m scared it's usually a sign that I HAVE to do it. Sometimes it can be a bit reckless, but for the most part we learn from our mistakes and as times goes on we are gambling with more knowledge! I also believe in having fun and I think the girls love that. We’ve traveled to New York, Dallas, Toronto, Hawaii (twice), about to go to Mexico and we cocktail together often. We are not corporate, we make inappropriate jokes, laugh a lot and don’t put a ton of pressure on ourselves. The pros? We HAVE SO MUCH FUN. The cons... there aren’t many boundaries and at the end of the day, THIS IS A BUSINESS . Sometimes things get awkward when mama boss has to put her foot down or when we have to schedule yearly reviews. Sometimes I think the girls wish there was more consistency and structure... but for the most part I don’t think they are complaining!

On finding balance:

That is certainly still a work in progress (I still have meltdowns and days where I don’t eat until 4pm), but I feel the thing that helps me achieve this is scheduling EVERYTHING! Blocking off time to check my emails, call the girls, making dinner and family time! If it’s not scheduled in my iCal, chances are, it’s not happening! That reminds me, I should schedule some sleep! LOL

JILLIAN HARRIS

– BRAND FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR

On the flow of creativity:

Generally it happens when the girls are at my place and we are in the middle of our weekly photoshoots, over a bottle of wine, or when I’m driving and can’t jot them down! LOL!

On her significant accomplishments:

There have been so many, from being a part of the Bachelor family, to hosting Love It Or List It Vancouver, to being able to hire and employ a TEAM to help me grow the brand! Having my own clothing line was INCREDIBLE for sure!

On building her creative team:

I just started getting so overwhelmed with trying to do everything on my own that I was READY to bring people on to help me. I’m pretty good at delegating! LOL! Also, I REALLY love my team and try to be the best boss I can be, so they can love me and the brand back... so far its working!

On her ideal, productive day:

Knocking out a huge photoshoot with a healthy balance of partnership obligations and organic content for the blog, cracking open a bottle of vino around 3pm, chatting about creative processes and systems, having a good laugh and dinner ready by 5:30pm!

What's next? We have so many ideas floating around but I would love to see either our own fashion or decor line... or online courses for anyone to take! We are also thinking of a JILLY BOX … would you buy it?

Yes! ;)

SHAY MERRITT – MANAGING EDITOR

I was born and raised in Penticton, BC. I took Fashion Marketing Management at University graduating at the top of my class before packing my bags and moving to London, England. I worked at Harrods for two years until my work visa ran out and I slowly but surely made my way back to Canadian soil. I have worked in all aspects of the fashion industry since I was 14 before landing a job with Jillian Harris. If I’m not busy behind my computer screen you can find me snuggling up next to my BIG puppy Moose. I have a love for travel, fashion, and good food and am easily inspired by the outdoors.

My advice for digital strategy is to just start doing it and do it consistently. You won’t notice a difference or a change in your social channels if you don’t do it with both feet in and full steam ahead.

MINDY CRAWFORD – COMMUNICATIONS C OORDINATOR I have been in the world of digital marketing since 2012 and joined Team Jilly full time in December 2016. I’m a sucker for quality time with friends and family, those moments that make you laugh so hard you cry, a good glass of red wine, a positive outlook, and I might just be a bit of a hopeless romantic. Okay, let’s be honest ... I’m a HUGE hopeless romantic.

In my opinion, effective communication is the combination of keeping an open mind paired with strong listening skills and the willingness to set your ego aside. There is nothing more encouraging and inspiring than being on a team where everyone is heard and everyone's opinion matters!

TORI WESSZER – CONTRIBUTOR, FOOD AND NUTRITION I love food… good food! Sister (actually a cousin, but we were raised as sisters) to Jillian Harris, I’m also a proud mama of two, lucky wife to my awesome husband, hard-core foodie and a Registered Dietitian. Raised in the stunning Okanagan Valley, I’ve been surrounded by beautiful orchards, wineries and wholesome, locally grown food since I can remember. I am so lucky that I get to share my passion for all things food, family and lifestyle through my blog FraicheNutrition.com!

So far. the project I am most proud of is the cookbook, but it is still a work in progress… I’ll let you know! The journey has been SO much more work than I ever thought it would be. The photo shoot days are pure mayhem! I now have incredible respect for anybody who has published a cookbook!

KAITLIN HARGREAVES – MAKEUP ARTIST & HAIRSTYLIST

Jill's signature look is simplicity: easy on the eyeshadow with strong eyeliner and either a neutral or bright lip depending on the mood. I don't go too dramatic on the eyes to keep it nice and fresh looking. I love the Glo Skin Beauty "Suede Matte Crayons”. Some of my fave shades are “Sorbet”, “Crimson”, “Crush”, and my all-time favourite: “Trademark”. As for skin, I keep her matte and looking awake. I love the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder and for the under eye I use MAC Prolong Wear Concealer set with Laura Mercier Under Eye Setting Powder.

I'm a freelance makeup and hair artist based out of Vancouver, BC. After completing training at Blanche Macdonald Centre in 2007, at the top of my class, I began my career working on various film sets and getting retail experience with companies such as MAC, Shiseido and Christian Dior. During these years I specialized in bridal, TV, commercial, photoshoots, event makeup and special FX. In 2005 when HGTV’s Love It Or List It came to Vancouver, I was offered the job as key Makeup/Hair Stylist. As an artist, my philosophy is to bring out one’s natural beauty, making them a more polished version of themselves by enhancing their best features.

TYLER EVANS – JILLIAN'S AGENT

20

With a background in communications and a passion for brand development, I began my career as a talent manager, focusing on television personalities with various skill sets. With the rise of digital media and sponsored content, a new celebrity emerged and I founded my company, York & James in 2015, with a focus on television personalities and lifestyle influencers alike. Focusing on individual brand development across customized platforms, I've helped turn my talents' brands into successful businesses. Each client has a different focus and approach including social media, product development, collaborations, speaking engagements, publishing and television appearances. I pride myself on helping clients establish their strong suits and pursue those they are most passionate about.

MACKENZIE DEMPSEY – PHOTOGRAPHER I left the corporate grind in 2016 to follow my passion of photography, and I haven’t looked back since! I’ve been reading Jillian’s blog for almost ten years, and was fortunate enough to join her team earlier this year (DREAM job!!). I’m constantly inspired by life’s little pleasures, like slow Sunday mornings, fresh white sheets and chocolate chip cookies. When I’m not busy shooting, I love spending time with my hunky husband Luke, teaching barre and hosting dinner parties.

TEAM CHAT

Q: It seems as though team-building is a priority with ‘Team Jilly’. Why do you believe in it so much? What are some of the best experiences you have had together?

I'd have to say that my 'key' to success was a lot of hard work and risk-taking. I have always dreamed of being a part of Jillian’s team, and I took a huge risk by leaving my corporate job last year and moving to Kelowna. While it was completely terrifying, I can honestly say that it was the best decision I made for my career. I couldn't do what I do if I wasn’t surrounded by the empowering women on Team Jilly, and I also have an incredibly supportive husband without whom I would not be where I am.

JILLIAN: There are WAY too many! I love spending time with the girls, whether we are away on vacation sippin double piña coladas, or here at my home catching up over a glass of wine! I think team-building is so important because it is an opportunity to push work to the side and really get to know the people you are working with on a personal level. I have had many bosses in my life, and I'm sorry if one of them is reading this but I haven’t had many that have treated me good. I have been called names, pushed too hard, under paid, bullied... and I always told myself I could do better. If I was busting my ass to make 'this guy' or 'that guy' rich... why couldn't they just be nice to me? This is my pay back. This is my turn to prove that you can have a successful company and BE nice, treat your employees well, have fun, be goofy... and STILL be respected (even though they make fun of me all the time... but I like it!) SHAY: It is SO important to work alongside women that empower you and motivate you to be your best. It’s important that you get to know the ins and outs of everyone on your team so that you can work stronger together. The best experiences for me have always involved traveling with the team … it allows you to see a different side of your co-workers outside of the workplace when your mindset is much more open and relaxed. Jilly and I went to New York Fashion Week and Honolulu all in the matter of a month and at the time it made our teamwork much more bonded and valuable. TORI: Jillian is a big proponent of fun: she always has been! Building relationships among the team is incredibly important to the survival of a business, and our team-building events are always off the charts... even if it’s just a glass of wine down the street, these girls are absolutely amazing and so much fun to be with! That being said, our trip to Oahu was a dream come true! We ate, shopped, suntanned and drank piña coladas to our hearts' content!

Q:

WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL?

JILLIAN: Maybe like a jack russel? They have SO much energy, are SO happy and know what they want! LOL SHAY: To be completely honest .. I couldn’t think of an animal who was a perfectionist or needed to be extremely organized at all times (my first two traits that popped into mind) … so I google’d spirit animal quiz and took it! I ended up being a Lioness … which I think I agree with? Powerful, fierce, fought for everything to be where they are today, and may or may not be the king of the desert. I think I relate to this in many aspects of my life. MACKENZIE: My spirit animal would have to be Nacho (Jillian's dog). He has the ultimate life – cuddling, eating and SLEEPING! TORI: A squirrel. I’m such a busy body and can’t sit still! And I love organizing my things, I think a squirrel would do that, yes? KAITLIN: Probably an alpaca… cause they’re so damn cute and always smiling :) TYLER: Oh gosh, I have to think about this one more…haha! MINDY: I had no clue, so I took a test (thanks BuzzFeed!) and it told me my spirit animal was a sloth, so, of course, I had to read the reason why and it read: “You're as cool as a cucumber, and you love to go with the flow. Your favorite activities include eating, sleeping, and eating again.” I think it’s pretty on point minus the napping business. I hardly ever nap.

Photography included provided by the Jillian Harris Creative Team, including the work of: Mackenzie Dempsey @mackenziejanephoto, Janis Nicolai @pineconecamp, and Allison Kuhl @allisonkuhl

TEAM CHAT Q: Working with so many creative minds often leads to a variety of opinions and ideas. How do you manage the decision making process? JILLIAN: Everyone is allowed to voice their opinion. We generally hash it all out and move forward with what feels like the best direction for the team as a whole. Once in a while, someone makes a really silly suggestion and the team NEVER lets it go. Trust me, we will haunt you and make fun of you forever hahaha... gotta have a thick skin on this team!

S H AY

How do you manage all of the team's creative ideas and stay organized? We have just hired a “business coach” and she has been a great guide for us to bounce ideas off of ... however... we tend to make our most creative decisions after a glass of wine or two! lol To stay organized, we use apps such as Wunderlist, iCal, dropbox, planoly … and systems! We have created systems for almost everything that we do so that everything is as organized as possible.

MINDY

How does the team get into the creative z one? Jillian, Shay, Mackenzie, and I meet at Jillian’s home for weekly photoshoots. During this time we make sure to chat about upcoming projects, events, blogs, and partnerships. It’s during these face-to-face moments when we really get in the zone and start firing off those creative ideas! Sometimes, a glass (or two) of wine helps as well!

MACKENZIE: We all respect each other and allow everyone to voice their opinion. One of my favourite aspects of working on this team is that there is a sense of freedom to express ideas and create without restrictions or limitations. I love that everyone brings a fresh perspective that keeps us all creating the best work we can. Having a team filled with creative and talented women means that there are tons of new ideas every day, which creates an amazing dynamic!

TORI: Jillian tends to establish a good framework and vision for the team to work off of, which really helps the decision making process move along. There’s a heap of respect among the team, and when a suggestion is made it’s usually solid and moves the process along.

FORMING COLLABORATIONS FOR SUCCESS CONNECT ON SOCIAL

@creativewifeandjoyfulworker

Creative Collaborations:

MAXIMIZE THE BENEFITS FOR ALL BUSINESSES INVOLVED. Collaboration over competition right? Of course! But this is your business we are talking

about. You have budgets, goals, and not a lot of time. Collaborating for joint promotions with other businesses can be a powerful marketing tactic. Creating joint campaigns together allow you to speak to your combined customer base and put the genius of multiple creative minds to work. This all sounds great on paper, but if you're considering a business collaboration, you must learn when to say “no” and when to say “heck yes!” Let’s break it down, shall we? To get smart about collaborations, I've formed a checklist for success. When approaching a new collaboration if you answer “heck yes!” to everything below, you can pretty much guarantee that the collaboration you are about to form will be beneficial for your business. 1. Are You Excited About It? This might seem obvious, but it isn’t always. Sometimes we get so caught up in the daily hustle that we stop to think if we are really excited about it. Being excited about the collaboration will allow you to preform your contribution better creating the best results. 2. Is It Manageable With Your Timeline? Before you commit to anything – even if you're excited about it – make sure that you can make it work with your timeline. For large collaborations, (especially when there are a lot of people relying on each other) each person needs to ensure they can fulfill their role. 3. Do Your Target Markets Align? You could put marking dollars into an ad campaign directed at a totally different market. Ask yourself at the beginning of the collaboration who is going to see it? Who will the collaborative project, product, images, etc… be viewed by? Make sure the target markets align. 4. Does Each Party Benefit Equally? I can’t stress this enough. A collaboration is meant to benefit everyone to the same degree for the amount of effort that each is putting into it. For example, if someone is organizing a photoshoot you might be asked for product. Does the price of your product and the amount of time that you spent making and shipping it compare to the amount of time the collaborator is putting into organizing, photographing, styling and promoting the end result? When you feel that what you are providing is equal to what the organizer is providing for you, you can almost guarantee you will be happy with the end collaboration results. 5. What Are Your Goals And What Do You Expect In Return? With any project you want to determine your goals at the start. Make a note that for most collaborations you may not see an immediate return, especially if your goals are monetary. You will also want to be clear on your expectations from the collaboration from the beginning. You might request a post and mention on Instagram, a link on a blog post, images from a photographer, and so on. Whatever you are hoping to gain, be sure to make that clear in the beginning. Collaboration is key, when it is done right. Take your time deciding on which collaborations to join and be sure to ask yourself these questions in the beginning. I’ve personally been part of a large number of collaborations. The feeling you get after a successful collaboration is exhilarating. Working together in a group to create beautiful content brings lasting friendship and community. Have fun and get excited about your next collaboration! thoughts from the experts... Paige, @littlebeanxco (Brick & Mortar + Online Store Owner)

“A successful collaboration is made when two (or more) like-minded individuals wish to benefit by working together. Neither one should benefit more than the other – both parties should come out successful and positive. Having a clear plan, strategy and goal will contribute to bettering each other.”

Natalia, @theventurecreative.co (Photographer and Interior Designer) “Bringing creative minds together allows innovation. Competition isn’t a focus and the unity of doing things together allows brilliant ideas to come alive!”

Keisha, @lovinglittlesblog (Blogger/Influencer) “Collaboration is knowing that you can create with others by working together and opening your mind to new possibilities that you might not have thought of before! Doing this all while creating friendships and continuing to build each other up allows you to achieve more of what you love. It feels good to accept the fact that you can’t do it all alone!”

Julie, @juliechristine_xo (Blogger, Small Shop Owner & Photographer) “Collaborations seem to be most successful when everyone is willing to contribute and engage equally with their talents and skills – and when there is a genuine desire to work together.”

Jess Delves, @jess.delves (Brand and Social Media Strategist) “Collaborations are successful when each individual has their own talents, strengths, and ideas. They work when people are open-minded and willing to work together.”

hen you walk into a hotel ballroom or other event space on a non-event day, it is like

looking at a blank canvas before an artist begins to paint. The walls, tables and chairs

are generally fairly plain and generic and the personality of the room can go in any direction. However, walk into that same space on an event day and you might see a completely transformed space, with beautiful backdrops, inspiring up-lighting, glamorous linens and colourful centerpieces. That transformation usually comes courtesy of an event décor rental company. Very few venues have the budget, storage space or design expertise to create an event experience to suit every taste or theme. So, whether your look is classically elegant, vintage glam or country-chic, a décor supply and installation company is the backbone of every fabulous event. From linens, chair covers and overlays to lighting, centerpieces and unique décor items, an event decor company will have you covered. As with any industry, picking the right event décor company is key. A good event decor professional will do more than show you a list of available rental items. They will be able to use their experience, venue knowledge and design expertise to provide direction and insight which will turn your vision into reality. If you have a theme and colour palette as a starting point, a good event décor professional can show you a world of possibilities. So, whether you’re planning a wedding, corporate gala, bar mitzvah, funeral, sweet 16 party or any other event, you want a company that can come up with a great concept to make your event a success, and then execute that concept flawlessly. Renting décor for your next big event should be a fun and creative process and you should leave feeling confident that your event decorator understands your needs and will have your venue looking stunning. AT A L L O C C A S I O N S C H I C D É C O R E V E N T R E N TA L S , we like to think of ourselves as event designers - not just suppliers. We sit down and listen to our clients’ vision and then inspire and create from there. We pay attention to the little details, as that is what will ultimately surprise and delight your guests. Plus, we are equipped to also meet all of your floral needs through our sister company, P R E T T Y T H I N G S F LO R I S T. The synergy of having both your décor and flowers provided by the same supplier is great for consistency of look, and our joint ordering discounts can help with the budget as well! Whether you need a quick DIY rental or a full-blown design and install service, one of our event designers will be delighted to work with you.

How has your creativity evolved? For as long as I can remember I have been a creative person, but I don’t think I was always conscious of it. I knew it was a part of me and I loved channeling my creativity through painting and drawing, along with other activities. Over time, creating became something so a part of me it felt like I needed to do it to survive, but not in a forceful way. There was a moment in my childhood when I realized

I PAINT TRADITIONALLY AND DIGITALLY AND I LOVE TO MIX BOTH MEDIUMS. I REALLY LIKE MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY WITH MY CREATIONS.

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in your career. I think that having become a Digital Matte Painter in the Visual Effects Industry for blockbuster movies is one of my most significant accomplishments. I’ve dreamed for a very long time to be in this role, and I’ve finally achieved this goal! I’ve had the opportunity to work on films such as Justice League, The Mummy, Fantastic Beasts, Suicide Squad, Race – to name a few. I’m now able to enjoy this accomplishment and am in the process of setting new goals for myself.

I REALLY ENJOY MEETING NEW PEOPLE AND GETTING INVOLVED IN OUR COMMUNITY BY GOING TO EVENTS. I ALSO CREATE ART FOR EVENTS - EITHER BY BEING INSPIRED BY THEM AND PAINTING SOMETHING AFTERWARDS, CREATING AN ART INSTALLATION FOR THE EVENT OR LIVE PAINTING AT THE EVENT ITSELF!

Cont. that being able to create wasn’t something everybody was able to do – especially through traditional art. I really think that’s the moment when I took responsibility over my creativity and nurtured it, enabling it to evolve. Making conscious decisions to get better, to practice, to learn and to keep making decisions in my life that would take me closer to goals I was starting to formulate. I became more self aware and self confident and started exploring my creativity and trusting my intuition. I think that I still have so much to learn, and life in general is a creative journey so it will still continue to evolve. I feel I am currently the most creative that I’ve ever been, and the more I create the more creative I feel. It’s a wonderful expanding universe and I just want to keep channeling it and sharing it with others!

Where do you hope to see your career take you? In one year I’d love to be able to create a personal collection and an Art Show to showcase it, to keep meeting and collaborating with wonderful people, and to develop my skills as a Matte Painter and illustrator! In 5-10 years, I would love to hopefully have more of an international fanbase for my artwork. I would love to have some more blockbuster movies in my portfolio as well and hopefully take on more roles as a Creative Director.

What do you do to get into the Creative Zone? Getting into the creative zone is almost as organic and elusive as creating. There is no set check list for me to get in the Creative Zone, but ultimately I need to have a general feeling that enables me to create. I need to feel inspired, I need to have time, and I need to think - either mentally or visually by sketching. Just sitting with no distractions and thinking gets me in a really good place. Usually I keep my diary or my sketch book close and as the ideas flow into my head, I write them down or draw them. This usually gets me ready to create. Walking is really good for that too, which is one of the reasons why I try really hard to keep the habit of walking to work and back every day.

CONNECT ON SOCIAL @karlierosin

What is one stereotype about artists that you would like to prove wrong? I’d love to show that Artists have many different paths they can choose to be successful, and that you can make a solid career out of being creative! How has Social Media supported you in building your brand? Social media plays a big part in creating awareness around my artwork. It allows people to see the varied types of creations I make, the events I go to, and the behind the scenes of my career. I share a lot of my life on social media and that allows people to get to know me better, which creates brand awareness. Since art is so personal and comes from the soul… being authentic in my artwork and with the people who surround me (whether digitally or in person) is really important to me.

Award-Winning Author MEGAN WILLIAMS

Megan Williams is an award-winning author, business owner, stepmom and occasional elite runner. When she authored her first book, Our Interrupted Fairy Tale in 2014, her goal was to have a book that would capture and hopefully, eternalize the love story between her and her late partner, Chad Warren. Her original goal to self-publish just 100 copies to share with friends and family was promptly surpassed. Now over 2,000 copies later, Our Interrupted Fairy Tale has touched more people than Megan ever expected and has opened doors she never knew were available – including the launch of her business. The Self Publishing Agency is a unique business born from an initial workshop hosted by Vancity Business Babes, "How To Write A Book" where Megan coached, simplified and mapped out the process of how to write a book and get published. Today, The Self Publishing Agency coaches indie authors on writing and publishing their work with a reliable, referred team of professionals to support them.

Have you always considered yourself a creative person? Yes. And I think my parents would agree. I’ve had the privilege of growing up in a home where the attitude was, “Give it a try!” So, my pre-teens were spent recording home-made radio stations, filming household news stories and printing a neighbourhood newspaper. I think my quest for creativity has grown with me. Together, “she” and I are learning not just how to make something creative, but how to harness it to earn a living and provide value to others.

I DIDN’T REALIZE HOW MANY PEOPLE THERE ARE, LIKE ME, WHO HAVE STORIES TO TELL BUT HAD NO IDEA WHERE TO START.

WE CAN LEARN SO MUCH FROM EACH OTHER WHEN REAL STORIES GET SHARED. SOMETIMES, A STORY MIGHT BE INSIGNIFICANT, BUT IT STILL ALLOWS US TO LEARN SOMETHING WE MAY NOT HAVE KNOWN. OTHER TIMES, A STORY MIGHT LAND HEAVILY, INFLUENCING US TO ADJUST OUR COURSE OR MINDSET FOR THE BETTER.

The Power of Storytelling – explain why you believe in this so much. Stories can entertain us, catch us so off guard or surprise us. And sometimes, if we're lucky, a story can provide the best piece of advice to get through a rough patch. So I believe the more stories we share and the more we listen, the more enriched our lives can be. Facts are important, but I believe the stories that envelope them are equally as valuable. What advice do you have for someone who feels they have a story to tell but do not know where to start? There are a few strategies we use to help writers flush out their ideas. But a simple one is to start with a table of contents like you wrote in high school.

Cont. What are your headings? What are the subheadings (or stories) under those headings? This should allow writers to cross the start line knowing which direction they’re headed. Following that, the best advice we give people is to start. Don’t over think it. Time isn’t going to open up for you. Just start. If one decided they were going to write a book, how long should they expect that process to take? It took me two years to write, find an editor, learn about publishing, print and launch Our Interrupted Fairy Tale.

What do you do to get into the Creative Zone? I’m an extrovert by all versions of the definition. So I prefer to brainstorm with people. However, my solo creative routine seems to follow three steps: 1) Run/Workout: Brainstorming what I can do. 2) Shower/Eat: Consider options and opportunities for delivery. 3) Sweats on, sit down and work on it. It’s not glamorous, but it seems to be working for me! What has been the most rewarding experience when working with a client to date? Leading up to her launch, I knew how nervous Katie Bieksa was to go on live radio to talk about her book, Newport Jane. I was sitting in my car, still sweaty from a run, my friend making sure we were tuned in both on the car radio and streaming from the website. In 10 seconds, Katie had the hosts roaring with laughter. The mentions of her book were subtle and humble and she sounded so relaxed. I was fist pumping and slapping my steering wheel with pride that her hard work was about to take off. What surprised you most about experiencing the life of an author? Your story doesn’t stop once the reader has finished it. I was doing a signing at Chapters Indigo in Edmonton, and an American Marine walked by my table and stopped. “Crazy! I just heard about this book from a guy I served with. What are the odds that I walk in here to buy a book for my daughter, and you’re here! I don’t even live here! I’m going to buy copy. ”

It took my stepdaughter, Madison, and I, six months to write, hire an illustrator, and publish our children’s book – Don’t Call The Office.

Do you believe that writing has the ability to heal & transform? Absolutely. Writing has a way of off-loading and flushing-out whatever is on my mind. I find that once a thought is on the page, it’s out of my head and I don’t have to carry it around with me any more. Hopefully!

Of course, the process depends on the writer, genre and amount of work it requires to become the best version of itself, but with the right team and discipline, you could be a published author in a year.

If your life story were to be summed up in one sentence, what would it be? "There will always be more love."

When it comes to Real Estate decisions, the stats are in and women’s opinions count the most.

“I am dealing with more women making these big financial decisions than ever”, says Jenn Luebkert, a local Realtor with Homelife. “In 75%+ of my sales, if the woman wants the property, the man goes along with that decision.” A women’s approval is key to the purchase. I put a lot of my focus on them and their concerns, when working with my clients. Scientific research shows that women access their emotional center, tapping into how they feel about the purchase, vs. men who typically don’t. “Women respond best to a holistic approach when buying a house” says Richard Peterson, a psychiatrist who specializes in investment psychology. “A man’s ability to make multifaceted decisions is diminished when they have to rely on more than 3 to 4 factors”.

The Real Estate buying and selling process deals with an wide array of factors and feelings. Men tend to be mainly concerned with size and square footage, where as women want to know how the master bedroom “feels”, what the view is like and if the layout flows well for entertaining, or keeping an eye on the kids. It turns out those emotions lead to better decision making in the long run. So ladies, I am pleased to tell you that the stats reveal a continued upward trend in your purchasing power, and you are a growing force shaping the real estate market.

IRENE STR ONG'S NEW BOOK HELPS YOU UNLOCK

THE MOST POWERFUL WEALTH-BUILDING TOOL AVAILABLE BY LORI B AMBER “There is so much opportunity in real estate,” says local mortgage broker Irene Strong. “Providing you have a steady income and decent credit, it’s possible to buy something of substantial value with very little down. Why wouldn’t you do that?”

Women of I Like Her Style Vancouver Working Together for Success! Congratulations to ILHSV partner Irene Strong on publishing this book with Megan Williams' The Self Publishing Agency

Irene points doubters to a recent Globe and Mail article written by long-time Moneysense editor Duncan Hood, why telling people to rent rather than buy is bad advice. Her belief is rooted in personal experience. When she realized her new job meant she was close to being able to make a mortgage payment just six months after graduating from university, she sold her car to bridge the gap and bought a one-bedroom in East Vancouver. It became “more than a home,” she says. “It was a lifeline, creating forced savings through my mortgage payments and eventually providing rental income.”

NUT RI T I O N

YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL… CAKE INCLUDED As we enter the new year, resolutions related to food, health, and fitness are always top of mind. Swearing off wine and carbs while exercising five mornings a week is all met with the best intentions, only to find yourself on week two, late-night binging on your favorite “guilty” pleasure. However, what if you could have it all… and still be healthy? There are plenty of ways to be creative with nutrition, that results in delicious, decadent, and nourishing meals and snacks providing you with protein, fiber and healthy fats. Sneaking in nutrition has never been easier, or tasted better.

5 FAVORITE CREATIVE SUPERFOOD SWAPS Cacao Of all the foods available on this beautiful Earth, the most mag-

ical and best-loved are those from cacao, especially chocolate. Including some chocolate in your diet has many health benefits. At the centre are the flavonoids, which are one of the most powerful nutrients for your heart. In addition, cacao contains nutrients that help increase our feel-good hormones, providing a relaxed, happy, and blissed-out feeling. You can add dark cacao powder to baked goods, hot beverages, smoothies, or of course snack on 1-2 ounces of dark chocolate (at least 70% cacao).

Black Beans

Mild, sweet, earthy, soft in texture, rich in fiber, protein and iron, these black beauties are more than just a side-dish on taco Tuesday. You can replace flour in your favorite recipe with black beans and trust me, you will not be compromising on taste or texture. Cookies, brownies, and cakes will have an even richer and fudgier taste.

Coconut Oil

Coconut – the goddess of cooking oils. With a medium to high smoke point and light flavor, this semi-solid fat should be a staple in your oil line-up. You can replace any vegetable oils in baking, roasting, and medium-heat sautéing, with coconut oil. The health benefits are yet another bonus as coconut oil is anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. And you most certainly won’t be sacrificing your waist line as this multi-purpose oil does not get stored on the body as fat, instead goes right to the liver to be burned for energy. Now this is one way to energize your new year!

Flaxseeds

Want to increase the fiber, protein and healthy fats in your diet? Let ground flaxseeds come to your rescue. This ancient seed can be added to almost any dish, and in fact when allowed to soak in water, will form a gel, that can replace an egg in your baking. Hormonal balance, skin, hair, nails, digestion, and increased energy are just some of the nourishing benefits of these tiny seeds. A little creativity, planning and nutrition-know how will help you meet and exceed all your healthy new year resolutions. I’ll eat to that!

ELENA PAULY Earlier this Fall, we hosted a contest where our readers were able to enter via Instagram to win a VIP dinner with the magazine's founders, Kyla Getty and Jody Belanger. “Upon meeting that evening, our contest winner Elena Pauly's story of strength and resilience made a lasting impression. Elena's grace and light from within captivated us. One dinner was not enough – we were drawn to know more about her... and to share her incredible courage and genuine heart.ˮ

Coming from a career where Elena was passionate about working with children with Special Needs, Elena now takes care of her partner, Dan after he sustained a devistating spinal cord injury. Elena on the day she found out she would be featured: “I had felt like the past 2 years had been a constant battle – a battle to keep my head up, to try to slow down but still keep everything together all at once. My role of caregiver, leaves me in sweatpants on most days. I’ll admit that I find it easier to put my own needs last. I felt like the universe knew that deep down inside this day. Connection is what I needed. I am a true believer in Karma.ˮ

STRONG WOMEN.

MAY WE KNOW THEM. MAY WE RAISE THEM. MAY WE BE THEM.

WAGS OF SPINAL CORD INJURY SUPPORT GROUP Elena recently co-founded the 'WAGS of Spinal Cord Injury' support group for the Wives and Girlfriends effected by accidents like Dan's. "We remember how scared, confused and lonely we felt most days while our men were at G.F. Strong. Taking an hour a day for ourselves seemed like an impossibility because we were simply too exhausted." The goal of the group is to let others in the same position know that they are not alone. The group is a safe place to share your story and celebrate the small victories of each and every day with other women who can relate.

My admiration and love for ILHSV founders Kyla and Jody lead to pure joy when I received the message that I had won the ‘VIP Dinner Contest’ at S&L with a chance to get to know the ladies. I was ECSTATIC! I left the evening feeling blessed to have been picked for a lovely girl's night out and was thankful to have met such brave, positive and bright women. A few weeks later, Kyla and Jody reached out to me with yet another gift! To my surprise, they offered for me to be pampered for a day to create this magazine feature. What they didn't know was that day had began as a really lousy day for me. That week, I had felt like I was spinning my tires – between picking up extra shifts at work, driving to Abbotsford for classes, prepping meals for my partner Dan and I, and trying to find time to shave my legs! I had just climbed back into bed with chocolate in hand and a good book. Out of the blue, I received the sweetest message from Kyla and Jody and the tears began to flow. I re-read the message a few times – I couldn’t believe that it was happening to me! They had thanked me for coming out to meet them and said that after just a few hours spent together they felt so inspired by my story. You see, the past couple years have been a blur for Dan and I... though I had never really seen our story as inspirational. Prior to his accident, Dan had been an extremely hard-working stone mason for 18 years. 6 years ago when we met, he had told me of his hopes to one day travel. Year after year, we had discussed going away but could never dream of affording it while paying off a mortgage. In December of 2015, we finally did it – we were off to Cuba for our first out-of-country vacation... we were over the moon.

While away, on January 2nd, Dan dove into the shallow end of a swimming pool and became a quadriplegic instantly. Following the accident, we spent a week in the hospital in Santa Maria, Cuba. After hours of phone calls to the Embassy, our parents, insurance etc, we had finally set up a plan to get home safely. My uncle, Dr. Pauly, made arrangements to locate us a bed at VGH. After Dan had his C4-C6 vertebrae fused together, we were able to come home. It was a rush of emotions as we felt both sad to leave the close friendships we made with the locals through this extremely emotional situation, but were also relieved to be able to come home. When Dan moved from the ICU of Vancouver General into G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Center – just like that we put our house in Chilliwack up for sale. All of this went on while being at the forefront of my adoptive mother’s Parkinson’s care. I would be lying if I said it hasn’t been a little bit of a whirlwind. I also know that “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” And regardless of your situation – always remember the days that you prayed for the things that you have now. @ilikeherstylevancouver | 1 st ANNIVERSARY ISSUE 2018

There are times when we need to make a statement – without saying a word. Have you ever felt that way? Wearing your statement is definitely the ideal way to approach this – and that is where I was introduced to my favourite sweatshirt of the year – ‘Killing It’ by Muse, The Label.

It says it all, without saying anything at all. Whether the message is for someone else or whether its something just for yourself, there is a sense of empowerment here.

Bombay Beauty Co. I am a huge believer in Ayurveda. I’m sure it helps that my ancestry is Indian. I’ve travelled to India numerous times and I was always fascinated with the Ayurvedic way of healing and soothing the body. Ayurvedic medicine, “Ayurveda” for short, is one of the world's oldest holistic, “whole-body” healing systems. It was founded in India over 3,000 years ago. It's based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit – and in prevention of illness with practices like massage, meditation, yoga, diet, and use of herbal remedies. If you are interested in experiencing this, the timing is perfect, Bombay Brow Bar has just launched its newest concept store, Bombay Beauty Co., in the Fairmont Waterfront. Inspired by ancient Ayurvedic beauty rituals and traditions, Bombay Beauty Co. is a natural beauty brand that captures the essence of East meets West. Try the Bombay Rose Facial, an Ayurvedic inspired clay-based facial designed for all skin types using their signature natural skincare line, Bombay Rose. Rose cools and balances the mind-body force associated with fire, heat, anger and stress to help reduce wrinkles and slow the signs of aging. This is your chance to try beauty practices of Ayurveda in a new and modern way. #renew

Children are less creative and more stressed out in this time of digital overload. They can have a hard time using their imagination without extravagant toys, iPads, iPhones and gaming devices. According to Dr. Shimi Kang, “The Play Tent Canopy provides a space where children will receive the brain-boosting benefits of imaginary play, family bonding and precious downtime.”

Sea-licious Feeling good starts from the inside and works it's way out. Omega-3 fatty acids are integral to our health and well being – and are an important component of every cell in our body. Research has proven that omega-3 is essential for overall health of brain, skin, joints, and help us with our mood and hormones! New research reveals that people can manage stress better if they show high levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood. So far – it sounds like a super food to me! The only problem can be the taste.

Choose from the Play Tent Canopy which fits securely over a single mattress or the Play Tent. Both tents give children a designated space for family time and imagination-based play, shutting out the digital distractions that can be harmful to early child development. #reconnect

Founder and registered dietitian, Karlene Karst says, “Getting people to enjoy the taste and texture of fish oils was one of the biggest hurdles to overcome when creating Sea-licious. We started with the highest-quality fish oil sourced from sardines, anchovies, and mackerel and then flavored it with innovative, all-natural fruit flavors and the natural sweetener, monk fruit. The result is an omega product that every member of the family will look forward to taking.” It's the smallest step to make a huge difference in your family’s lifestyle. #reset
