Editor’s MESSAGE

We are welcoming Spring with open arms and embracing our first ever Spring Home & Garden Issue! This topic excites me, as there is endless inspiration around us to bring into our space and truly create our perfect oasis we get to call home!

the HOME & GARDEN issue

As always, when I am at the drawing board planning the next issue, I look around to those in our community whom I have connected with the stories that spoke to me. This was no easy feat, as the amount of women who have touched me on this journey are too many to count, and all are worthy of a cover story! So there you have it, my secret strategy is out - trusting my gut! I am an Editor of the magazine and also of a life full of following intuition and trusting the process. Everything always seems to fall in to place at the perfect time and in an authentic way when this approach is used in my experience. ALWAYS with one goal in mind, to inspire and empower our readers with stories from real women right here in our backyard! Speaking of backyards – tis the season to get outside! This issue walks us through the gardens and homes of our leading ladies and inspires that refresh in our lives we all crave this time of year! Whether its injecting a pop of colour into your space, taking a shot at your green thumb, or focusing on your relationships at home – I say go for it girl! Give it your best shot and be sure to enjoy the process! Your home should ignite you when you walk through the door. It should spark a joy in you that makes you fall right into a place of ease and certainty. Big or small, décor infused or minimalist vibes, soft feminine tones or dark masculine statements… it’s all up to you! It’s your unique style and that is the beauty of it all! I always say that Home is not a place…it’s a feeling! After all, our home is where our story begins…

xoxo

WINE

& Mingle

It was the New Year and our 2nd Anniversary Issue of I Like Her Style Vancouver Magazine had just launched! The only thing missing from this perfect scenario was an event to kick off our 2019 series... so, we made the magic happen! Our 1st Wine & Mingle of the new year was hosted on January 28th in the heart of Vancouver at the warm & inviting WildTale Yaletown, with our very own private space to take the night away! Is there a better way to spend a Monday after work than a girl’s wine night? We don’t think so! Our guests enjoyed a glass of wine and canapes, while mingling and meeting the women behind the I Like Her Style Vancouver brand! It was an evening to connect with local ladies who believe in lifting one another up and celebrating all that we have to offer in this beautiful place we call home! Our Wine & Mingle events have such a positive response with guests, who share that they are able to make new business partnerships, form new relationships, and re-connect with others they had lost touch with. It’s a night for everyone – no strings attached – just genuine connecting and great conversation! Stay tuned for the next Wine & Mingle event coming your way and be sure to join us in celebration of this community – cheers!

A LOOK INSIDE OUR

POP-IN

BOUTIQUE 14

Style with Soul to Empower is our mantra, and our Business Director Jody Belanger is always looking for new ways to continue to spread our brand message and expand on the media movement we have created. With her extensive background in the Fashion Retail Industry, opening the doors to a 2 day ‘Pop-In’ shopping experience at Willowbrook Shopping Centre was the perfect opportunity... taking her back to her roots and including the ILHSV team along for this exciting endeavor. Our magazine exists to support

local and shine a spotlight on businesses doing amazing things, so naturally our boutique would have the same feel! We had a collection of some of our favourite local brands, along with some exclusive ILHSV pieces which made their debut. What’s an ILHSV event without some action – hair & makeup, book signing, Instagram photobooth contest, gifts with purchase… there was fun to be had all around! We had countless ‘pinch us’ moments throughout the weekend and are so grateful for visitors who came from all over the Lower Mainland to shop and support! Thank you to our amazing partners who helped make this a dream come true!

Their Story... Brittany Curby and Judy Dill prove that whether you live in a city condo or suburban setting, putting love into your home is powerful.

Friends in Design! So just how did this friendship blossom? Brittany Curby (on the left) and Judy Dill (on the right), first connected on Instagram in the Fall of 2015. They hit it off right away and soon discovered the conversation flowed so naturally and continued to chat over the app regularly. Fast forward to a shopping day in Winter 2016, where little did they know their design intuition would be in sync and lead them both to one of their favourite home décor safe havens - Michaels. At this point only connecting via social media, they did a double take and realized they had finally come face to face. The feeling is described by them as if, ‘running into a long-lost friend’. In true homage to the way their friendship started – via photographs on Instagram – they got Judy’s daughter Rachel to snap a photo of them together. A moment that will go down in history of sparking a friendship worthy of a cover story!

Now three years later, these two women have grown to become very close friends who chat almost daily. The friendship has taken them on many adventures, from road trips to Target & Vintage Markets, to coffee dates that turn into deep life discussions. One adventure together led them to cross our path and creating a bond manifesting into this moment. Brittany and Judy attended our ILHSV Pop-Up Party hosted at the Little White House & Co. in the Fall of last year and we made an instant connection and our ‘girl crush’ officially began! The more time we spent getting to know these ladies, we just knew deep inside that we wanted to feature them in our upcoming issue. They embody our mantra – Style with Soul to Empower – and we are so grateful to now call them friends as well!

Brittany Curby is the creator of the @stayathomedecor instagram account, Full time Mother to her lovely son Adam, fur baby Teddy, and wife to David. She was born and raised in the Vancouver area and has lived a life filled with many moves (27 homes in 30 years) and career choices – essentially leading her to find her true passion in Home Décor & Design. From childhood on, her many moves gave her the opportunity to constantly redecorate and rearrange. At the young age of 16, she was exposed to the beauty in homes as she worked alongside her Stepdad as a drywall finisher in some of the most prestigious neighbourhoods of the Lower Mainland. Brittany’s passion for this industry really took off when she met her husband 8 years ago. David had flipped the house they were initially living in and took on renovations in the kitchen and bathroom. “I have to say, a home reno is the ultimate test for any relationship,” she says. Shortly after, they sold that house and began renting as they looked for their next property. Brittany began decorating all of their renovation projects, giving them her personal touch and creating spaces that felt like home. Currently, they are building the home of their dreams and cannot wait to share that labor of love with everyone once it is complete. In the meantime, they call a condo in the Coal Harbor area of Vancouver home. Brittany’s passion for home décor, design and the desire to share it with others began on Instagram as a hobby, but she soon realized this was more than that, it is where her heart is. Her ‘cup is half full’ attitude and belief in the power of positive thinking, has really allowed her to create the life she wants! “One important thing when it comes to decorating is not to rush into anything, take your time. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither should your home style. Take time to decorate, think things over and put things on hold if you’re unsure.”

Britt any...

When decorating a new space, where do you begin? PAINT! It is such an easy way to transform a space and make it your own. I always pick one room to focus on and start with the larger furniture, working my way down to the small items. Sometimes I scan Pinterest and Instagram for inspo - but strictly for inspo. I don’t like to imitate because in the end I like to let my creativity guide me.

In her words...

“When my account started growing and I had big companies reaching out to me to collaborate, I knew I had made the right choice to chase my dreams of a life in this industry. My goal is to continue working with my husband and flipping more houses. I love looking at the bones of homes and thinking of how they can be transformed. Then of course, finishing it off with the final decor touches is the cherry on top! It really comes natural for me to spot what looks right… not just pretty or not just white, but what looks right. That is what makes the whole thing enjoyable – when I can visualize it all. I would love to start working with people on one project at a time and bring happiness to them by making their homes everything that they could imagine and more. My dream would be to have a tv segment or even my own show one day!”

What are some easy ways to refresh a space on a budget? The simplest and easiest way to refresh your home is to move things around! For example, if you’re wanting a new look, try swapping out your bedroom lamps for your living room lamps or switch your throw pillows from your bed onto the couch. I call it ‘Shopping Your Home’, be creative with it! Some other great ways to refresh your home are: • Pillows and throws - if you have a dark couch but you’re dreaming of a nice white one, add a few light-coloured pillows and throws to achieve the look you want. • Paint - You can completely transform your home or a piece of furniture with a can of paint. It adds a sense of refresh. • Curtains - I recently added curtain sheers to my entire apartment for under $150… thank you IKEA! That was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It took our rental from looking drab to soft, cozy, and romantic! • A new piece of artwork - It doesn’t have to be pricey and if you’re afraid of putting holes in the wall, don’t be – Command Brand 3M strips are a life saver. I use them for essentially everything in our home that is under 15 lbs. They are a must have! • Plants - They are super affordable and if a space in your home is lacking something you can usually solve that with a gorgeous plant. If you don’t have a green thumb don’t worry, there are some amazing faux plants these days. You can never go wrong with bringing the outdoors in! • Area rug - I always find rugs to be that finishing touch a room needs to make it feel transformed. Rugs can be a bit pricey but with a some searching you can find some affordable options.

Any gardening ideas for Spring for the condo dwellers? When you think condo patio, gardening isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind but, adding a few big potted plants can be such an easy way to transform your space. My favourite plants to add to the patio are palms - you can get them for around $17 at Ikea or Home Depot. They can stay outdoors until the Fall and can be brought indoors until the Spring again. I also really love decorative grass. It can be so pretty and is great for privacy. Most decorative grasses are perennials so they can stay outdoors year-round. Describe some things to keep in mind when styling a rented condo in the city. Stick to picking items that you feel will look great in other homes since renting isn’t your forever home. Always measure your space before you shop online or in stores. Don’t compare your home to others. It can be hard to do in the world of social media but what might look good in someone else’s home (or Instagram square) might not look good in yours. Comparison is the theif of joy! Stay true to yourself, because your home should reflect you and your style. If you try to style it to something you’re not, you will not be happy with it! Where did your love for DIY’s come from and what are some current ones found in your home? I remember being a kid watching shows with my mom like Debbie Travis ‘Painted House’… that show was so much inspiration to me! My mom has always been very handy, there isn’t anything she won’t or can’t do. My passion for DIY’s started in my early 20’s trying to achieve a certain look on a budget. My current DIY’s are a bench in my bedroom painted white with a reupholstered linen coloured seat, a plant pot in my bedroom painted pink, ‘ABC’s’ art work in Adam’s playroom, chandelier in the living room spray painted white, and coffee table spray painted gold. If you had 5 more hours in your day, what would you do with them? Sleep? Just kidding! I would use the extra time to learn something new like an online course or read. I really want to learn more about photography, web design & video editing. I would also like to start a blog this year. I am constantly trying to learn new things! What is your life mantra? ‘If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you’

Judy Dill is the creator of the Life Is Better At Home blog and Instagram account: @lifeisbetterathome. She’s Mother to 2 beautiful children Rachel and Ethan and wife to Stewart. She grew up in Burnaby and has nestled in Coquitlam for the last 17 years with her family. Judy has a love for being active and always feels recharged when she can fit a workout in. Book club get-togethers with her girlfriends once a month are a must. Her family enjoys time together at community festivals, hiking, backyard pool time, and getaways to the family beach cottage on the Sunshine Coast. But, her most recent love and passion is Home Décor & Design. The move into her current home in the suburbs 4 years ago sparked the inspiration to take her decorating to a whole new level as she reveled in a passion she always had deep down. When starting to design a new space, Judy first thinks about how it will be used and how she wants it to feel. She then visits the pages of her favourite magazines and her favourite local stores for some inspiration. Sometimes it’s as a simple as a pillow, a piece of art, or a unique object that sparks a vision for the whole room. Judy loves entertaining. She wants her guests to feel relaxed and comfortable and takes that into consideration when designing her space with the perfect touches to exude that vibe. Recently, she has pushed herself outside of her comfort zone by attending local women’s events to network. Her goal is to step out from behind social media and the ‘online world’ to meet inspirational women in person, building connections and friendships to last a lifetime. She has so much love, kindness, and inspiration to share with the world! “I’ve always enjoyed making my home beautiful and cozy but, moving houses and doubling our square footage 4 years ago gave me a whole new canvas to furnish and decorate. Meanwhile my personal style was evolving and that’s really when things took off!”

What do you love most about the Home & Garden industry? I love how it’s become so organic! Inspiration comes from bloggers, business owners, and influencers who are driving the current and upcoming trends. How would you describe the style of your home? I would describe the style of our home as modern traditional. The architectural design is traditional while our furniture is a mix of both modern and traditional pieces. The furniture in our dining room originally belonged to my grandparents and it was my parents when I was growing up. When we moved into our first home, my Dad refinished it for us and now it’s my favourite place for Sunday night dinners. I like mixing styles and love adding feminine, natural elements into my décor.

In her words...

“I used to style a table or arrange a bouquet of flowers and wish I had someone to share them with who could appreciate them in the same way I did. So, I started the blog and my Instagram account to share my passion for interior styling with others. Since my blogging journey began, I’ve made some amazing friends along the way and have found a creative outlet that I think was truly missing in my life. My goals for the future of my brand are to keep growing my blog and continue connecting and collaborating with other women entrepreneurs in this amazing local community! I want to take my stylist skills to the next level, wherever that may be... time will tell!”

What are some of your favourite local brands and makers you are currently showcasing in your home? I like shopping local as much as I can and love when I get to connect with the makers! Some of my favourites include: Pillow Fight Factory (whom I was lucky enough to collaborate with on a juju feather luxury pillow collection), Urbanwalls, Vancouver Candle Co., Tofino Towel Co. and Naked Pallet. What are some must-have trends for Spring you think everyone should inject into their home decor? I’m all about adding plants and florals into my décor right now! Fresh is always my favourite but using a mix of fresh and faux works well together too. Spring is a great time to add some colour into your home! I’m really loving soft pinks and corals or try a splash of green or blue. Start small with a pillow or throw and see how you like it. You can always add more! Where do you get your design inspiration from? I’m old school and love flipping through home & garden magazines! We also like to watch HGTV as a family, usually dreaming of remodeling our own beachside bargain find.

Describe some things to keep in mind when styling a multi-story family home in the suburbs. • Consider white - Painting your interior white keeps things light and bright even with our grey winters here in Vancouver. You can always incorporate colour with accent pieces and seasonal décor. • Choose a design style - Every room doesn’t have to match but, having a common theme will give it a cohesive look, especially if your home is open-concept. • Work with your own home’s natural design elements - Our home’s architecture is traditional, so I try to mostly stay true to that. What is your favourite DIY you have done lately? This year I did two fireplace refresh DIY ‘s. One was with peel & stick tile and the other was with stencil and paint. They both totally transformed the look of the space without a costly, large-scale renovation. How do you keep your home organized (or at least attempt to, hehe)? Ha ha! This is a tough one for me because I don’t come by it naturally. My daughter is the organizer in our house, and I call on her to help me keep things under control. I guess my advice would be to involve the whole family in this process. If everyone is doing their part, things have a better chance of staying organized. You wear so many hats in your life, what is one constant value you bring throughout all of them? I think it would be kindness. When it comes to friends and family, I love surprising them with flowers (my favourite thing to do!), lending an ear when needed or just giving a great big hug. Online, it’s spreading the love by encouraging others with a kind comment or saying thank you. That’s how Brittany and I first connected, and it’s led to a friendship I’m so grateful for! Does your family have a say or get to lend a helping hand when it comes to decorating the home or is this ‘Momma territory’ only? I actually ask their opinions quite often. Maybe more than they’d like! Sometimes I get a design idea and my husband or children are skeptical about it. It almost always works out in the end. Sometimes you just have to trust your instincts!

Intimate ENSUITE TOUR feelin yourself Welcome inside my ensuite for this intimate look at one of the sexiest rooms in my home! This Spring, I’m exploring the notion that self care is not only essential... but it’s also quite sexy darling! A woman’s ensuite bathroom is her sanctuary... and also her kingdom. Here, we love on ourselves freely and selfishly, ‘filling our cup’ and centering ourselves. It’s a space completely and unapologetically dedicated to our needs and to our bodies. As we connect to ourselves in this way, our minds and souls flourish here, too. In this tour, I’m inviting you into the renovated ensuite in my 1980’s-built home. I am in love with this space and am hoping to inspire you to amp up the sexy factor in your own ensuite through the addition of a few touches that speak to your sultry side and by intentionally embracing this state of mind during your self care routine. The act of cleansing and caring for our bodies is a sexy ritual. It can be a luxury... as anyone who has had a baby will understand! In an age where the the daily demands on women are high, the simple time we take out in this room is both powerful and priceless. When done right – we exist purely in the moment, and connect with our inner being. (Or shall I say, ‘inner goddess’?!) Our ensuites are the home to our lovely lotions, potions and creams... all of our favourite hand selected products. We refresh in the morning, preparing ourselves for the day, creating our look to present to the world and building our confidence through the grooming process. In the evening it is here that we unwind for rest, back to our naturally beautiful selves. It’s a fabulously sensual oasis.

& T H E B O S S ( A N OVA ) B E H I N D T H E B R A N D MEET CLAUDIA DUFFIELD, THE PRESIDENT OF DELL ANNO CANADA, A VISIONARY WHO HAS A PASSION FOR NURTURING THE CREATION OF BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED AND ORGANIZED LIVES WITH HOMEOWNERS ACROSS CANADA. Claudia is a woman who has often been described as a pioneer and leader in most situations in her life. She is responsible for bringing the Dell Anno brand of Brazilian/Italian crafted cabinetry to Canada. (See ad to the right.) Having began her journey born and raised in Brazil, Claudia then moved to England, and finally ended up here in Canada. She strives to inspire joy, encourage creativity, and always act with love! With an undeniable entrepreneurial spirit and several business ownerships involving teaching ESL in the early years and leading to design consultation and franchise ownership later, her resourceful tendencies and positive outlook have carried her along the way. When asked how she has overcome the fears and doubts that come with starting a business. She shared, “It wasn’t easy facing the fears and taking the leap, but I despise frustration and suffering for any amount of time, so I intentionally focused on lots of positive selftalk, finding the right people to encourage and support my ideas, plus seeking expert advice and strategic planning.” She is hopeful that society is now getting the memo that ‘Women Rule the World’ and shall we say, are daring enough to ‘Live Like a Bossanova’! (The business’ signature tagline.) So what is a Bossanova vibe? It can be as bright as Carnival or as melodic as an intimate gathering! When you visit the Dell Anno showroom found in the heart of the Fraser Valley, you take a little trip to Brazil without the cost of a ticket! Dell Anno is a 35-year-old beloved luxury brand from her native Brazil, that truly speaks to the work ethics, integrity and craftsmanship of the Italian immigrants who settled there in the 1800’s. The beauty of great furniture (and wine, hello!) was born, and how exciting it is now for Canadian consumers to have access to this luxury Italian designed custom cabinetry at reasonable prices? Affordable luxury you say? YES PLEASE! Unique features of the Dell Anno Design are abundant and Claudia has enlightened us with some of her favourites: ‘Italian Design – horizontal clean line focus providing minimal visual clutter and a more peaceful surrounding, Lacquered Finishes – automotive finish quality in either matte or gloss that feel amazing to the touch, Organizational Satisfaction – exclusive line of accessories to complete your cabinet with all the details to make your life easier’. From their products, to the team and the positive can-do attitude they exude, working with Dell Anno truly accentuates one’s desire to live a happier stress-free life! Luxurious, Modern, Sexy – three words to describe this brand and the way we want to feel this Spring and every season ahead, don’t you?! See you in the showroom! 28

CLAUDIA SAYS: I’M A THINKER AND ALWAYS EXPANDING MY HORIZONS WITH NEW PERSPECTIVES, HOWEVER SOME OF MY CORE VALUES THAT I LIVE BY BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY ARE: 1. Have a vision, plan, organize and then execute! As designers and home organization experts we live by our analyzing, planning and designing, first our own lives, then in business and in other people’s homes. 2. More! Never settle for mediocrity. Support everyone around me to be the best they can be, always learning and developing in all areas of life. Stagnation and mediocrity are not options in my team. 3. High energy and joy! Always love what you do showing gratitude and appreciation every day to those who are with you and support you. Have fun every day!

KEEP IT SIMPLE:

PLANT-BASED SUPER ATHLETE, TOTAL BODY-MIND-SPIRIT ADVOCATE:

MANDY GILL

BRINGS US INTO HER

COMMUNITY GARDEN Spring is always worth getting excited for! Longer days filled with sunlight, warmth, and more opportunities to embrace the beautiful outdoors. If you had asked me years ago if spring sparked excitement in me to get vegetables planted and growing in the garden, I would have confidently stated that the grocery store is all I need. That’s until I gave up my high expectation to have a green thumb, and simply just started to plant! I’m so thrilled to share with you what I learnt as an ultra marathon trail runner now consuming 60-70% of my diet during the spring and summer months from vegetables I grow in my community garden!

30

CONNECT ONLINE @mandygilldotcom

The Canadian Food Guide saw it’s biggest change in over a decade at the beginning of this year. More than ever the importance of fruits and vegetables on your plate are key, and what better way to consume them than to grow your own? And I can assure you, it’s a learning experience you’ll never regret. Gone are the days of needing a big garden. Plants need good soil (which I highly recommend talking to your local garden centre about specifically), warmth, sunshine and water to grow strong and healthy, so as long as you can provide these key elements, there are plenty of plants you can grow. Lots of vegetables can be grown in pots, bags, and hanging baskets if you don’t have access to a backyard garden or community plot. Yes, you’ll make a few mistakes here and there but the great thing about plants is they quickly recover, leaving you with a great lesson of what to correct for next time. Once you have your first go around of fresh food from the garden, you quickly pick up the key requirements and your fridge will be stocked (with an option much cheaper than a trip to the grocery store)! NUTRITIONAL VALUE + SPRING SPECIFIC VEGETABLES:

Have you ever stopped mid bite and been shocked by the delicious flavours fulfilling your tastebuds? If you have, you know what I’m talking about, and if not, it’s time to find out! Here are my best recommendations as to spring vegetables that can be easily planted no matter what level your gardening skills are at. (As a bonus, there are fewer insects and pests around in early spring, so your vegetables can get off to a good start).

BEETROOT

BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Why? High in immune-boosting vitamin C, fiber, and essential minerals that compliment healthy nerve and muscle function.

Why? Brussels sprouts have a bad reputation and seem to come out only at Christmas and Thanksgiving. However these low calorie veggies are a great source of protein, and just one serving meets the daily vitamin C and vitamin K requirements.

When? They can be planted any time from March onwards and their roots are ready to harvest in 7-12 weeks. How? Dedicate a small corner of your garden to these root vegetables, or plant in a pot that’s approx 30cm deep. Make sure not to overcrowd them, as they like their space.

When? Plant between late March and mid-April and harvest between September and March. How? Brussels sprouts grow on large plants and are happiest outside in a garden. Pick a sunny corner, plant a few, and you’ll be amazed at how many grow.

SPINACH

CARROTS

Why? Spinach is extremely nutrient-rich high in potassium, magnesium, vitamin B6, B9, E, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, iron and calcium.

Why? Great source of beta-carotene, fiber, vitamin K, potassium and antioxidants. They’ve also been linked to lower cholesterol levels and improve eye health.

When? Plant these in early spring and they’ll be ready to eat by the summer. How? Plant outside in a small, sunny area, or plant in pots or window boxes. Make sure not to plant too many too close together.

When? Plant in spring and they’ll be ready in 12-16 weeks. How? Carrots grow well in the garden, but you can also grow them in a window box as long as it’s 30cm deep.

PEAS

Why? Snow peas, and other pod peas, are a great spring vegetable that kids tend to love, which are high in vitamin K, thiamin, copper, vitamin C, phosphorous, and folate. When? Early spring. Peas take anywhere from 5065 days to mature, depending on the variety, and can grow either as vines or as ‘bushes’, so they work equally well to both trellising and growing in regular garden beds. How? For best germination rates, pea seeds should be soaked in water overnight before planting them. KALE

Why? Kale is loaded with powerful antioxidants, is an excellent source of vitamin C, and can help lower cholesterol, which may reduce the risk of heart disease. When? Plant these in early spring for a summer harvest. How? Like most salad plants, these are happy to grow in pots or hanging baskets in a warm spot with sunshine. I was shocked at how large kale can grow, so make sure to plant them in a bigger pot. LETTUCE

Why? Health benefits include assisting with sleep, fighting inflammation, great for hydration, helps improve memory retention, preserves cognitive function, and is a rich source of omega 3 fatty acids. When? The cool, wet weather of spring is the perfect time to grow lettuce, and there are hundreds of varieties to choose from. Lettuce may take a little protection to get it going in the early spring, but it never tastes better than when it’s grown in the crisp spring air. How? Lettuce will tell you when it needs water. Just look at it. If the leaves are wilting, sprinkle them anytime, even in the heat of the day, to cool them off and slow down the transpiration rate.

MENTAL HEALTH + MINDFULNESS:

My original intention with my community garden plot was to save a few bucks on purchasing organic veggies. As much as I love my frequent trips to the farmers market I knew I had enough confidence to at least test out growing some tasty favourites. Now, I garden for my mental health. It doesn’t matter how long I spend in my garden, if it’s minutes to water, or an hour picking out fresh produce, I always find myself calm, relaxed, breathing deeper, cell-phone free, smiling, surrendering to being in the present, and realizing the true simplicity of life. There are hundreds of aspects of gardening that compliment mental health. From something as scientific as the fact that daily doses of sunshine help keep the body’s vitamin D levels up, to the reality that gardening keeps us connected to other living things, and that working in nature helps release happy hormones. It’s the perfect time of year to get planting, and since gardening can be cheaper than forms of therapy why not book yourself an appointment with Mother Nature today?

Natalie Langston – TV Host, Journalist, and Lifestyle Expert, takes on her new adventure of Motherhood and invites us into the design of sweet baby Pierce’s Nursery. This native Vancouverite developed her competitive edge and drive at an early age, with goals of being in entertainment reporting. Motherhood has encouraged her to slow down and take time for herself as a non-negotiable in order to be the best version of herself for Baby Pierce and Partner Gary. Natalie’s pregnancy journey was not rainbows and butterflies, with her fair share of health challenges right from the beginning. The experience has made her realize that our bodies are incredible and she shares, ‘what my body has done in the last year is worth every pain, every hair lost, every scar’. As an entrepreneur, motherhood has called for lots of coffee and asking for help – don’t try and be a hero! She describes motherhood as glorious, incredible, awe-inspiring, earth shattering, messy, painful, demanding, exhausting, overwhelming, all consuming and the best thing that’s happened to her. Natalie and Gary bought their new home for more space to raise a family, where it was quieter and closer to nature. Their home features their clean, modern décor style with contemporary lines as well as an open concept and lots of natural light. The color story includes whites, creams, and blended textures. When designing Pierce’s nursery, she wanted to create a pop of color and go bold – but not the classic boy’s room – rather one that he can grow with through the years. She wanted to create a space where everyone would feel a sense of calm and relaxation with a touch of little boy charm. “The staff at Snuggle Bugz were super kind and helpful, guiding me through the process of handpicking the perfect set for Pierce’s room.”

“We decided on a bear theme as it holds a special meaning in my heart. From the very beginning of my relationship with Gary, he has always called himself the big bear and the bear thing kind of stuck. We thought it would be sweet to bring that into the nursery for our little baby bear.”

I chose to organize his wash cloths, hooded bath towels, toques, hats and bibs separately in baskets on the shelves in the closet. At this rate he will own more shoes than me, so they too have their own spot! Next level must – label everything in case someone is over looking for something in a hurry.”

NATALIE’S STEP BY STEP NURSERY DESIGN PLAN: 1. Start with a theme – Whether it’s forest animals, dinosaurs or princesses, plan this out first before deciding on details. 2. Blackout Curtains – Spend the money! It’s worth it when the baby is sleeping and a great place to show your unique style – go neutral or colorful. 3. Comfy Rocking Chair/Glider – You’ll spend hours and hours in this, so make sure you are comfortable. Be sure it’s washable and durable to get you through countless spit ups. 4. Crib & Change Table – With so many options to choose from, pick something that compliments the room and adds warmth to the space. 5. Mattress / Changing Pad / Nursing Pillow – Highly recommend 100% organic and breathable so your baby can stay cool, cozy, and comforted. 6. Lighting – Warm & easy is a must! The softer light creates a calming environment and we put a dimmer in our space to help with the wind down moments. 7. Color/Pattern – Have fun with the space! I chose wallpaper and find that the patterns are great for keeping your baby stimulated as they develop their senses. 8. Diffuser – Even with diaper pails, odours can be lingering around and you don’t want your baby inhaling any of that or other chemicals. Lavender is quite calming and Eucalyptus helps decongest.

INTERIORS – YOU DO YOU

“WELL, SO AND SO SAID …” “Grey design palettes are unimaginative”. “White kitchens are so boring and passé”. “I only design using custom pieces.” “I’m so over farmhouse-chic.” I’ve heard many such comments in design community chatter and social media channels, and the superior or dismissive tone has always left me feeling just a bit uncomfortable. I enjoy many of those kinds of spaces! Does that mean I’m not a talented designer or that clients who love them aren’t sophisticated consumers? Dang! Now what I do???? Well … nothing. Feel free to confidently disregard such sentiments, or if you agree with them, then do so mightily and design accordingly. Unapologetically own your sense of style!

WHO’S “RIGHT”? I’m enamoured with the quiet elegance of grey and otherwise neutral palettes (and white kitchens for that matter). Bright colours and frenetic patterns wear on me and leave me feeling anxious. My husband prefers a colourful, visually lively interior. For him it feels

energizing and happy. Who’s “right”? I am. He is. (But who makes the decisions? She does. Editorial comment from her husband). Pushing imaginative and technical boundaries is the life blood of every creative industry, and I appreciate that old saying, “if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything”. But trying to keep pace with ever-changing trends and what is de rigueur might make your head spin 360 degrees; think The Exorcist. Allow your designer to expertly guide you but also explore what moves you. Know how you want to feel and be in your space and keep true to that, even when voices say you should embrace the new Pantone colour of the year.

“BUT I LIKE VANILLA ICE-CREAM!” Picture all of the great spaces you’ve ever been in, the ones that have inspired you and lifted your spirits. Think of all those colours, shades, textures, shapes, materials, art, lighting, and decorative items arranged in the various forms of architecture and settings: what countless, glorious combinations and permutations of interior spaces you would end up with. When you

By Giovanna Perot-Averill Principal, Giovanna Averill Interiors Inc.

visit new environments, soak them in and imagine living in each kind of space. With that said, if, after exploration, you still like what you like, don’t be pressured into other choices by designers, bloggers, magazines or opinionated celebrities. Ben and Jerry’s Pecan Sticky Bun ice cream may be getting all the good press, and it might just be the flavour of the year, but if vanilla ice cream is your jam – indulge!

OVER THE YEARS WE’VE HEARD, “WHEN ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO SELL THIS STUFF?!” CHIMICHURRI ORIGINATED IN ARGENTINA, BUT HAS FOUND ITS HOME ON OUR MENU. IT’S MOST DEFINITELY ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES AND HERE’S WHY: IT’S HEALTHY, BRIGHT, FRESH AND TASTES GOOD ON ALMOST EVERYTHING.

Photography: Brooklyn D Photography

WHY WE LOVE

CHIMICHURRI 40

@ilikeherstylevancouver | SPRI N G 2019

Chimichurri adds a freshness to a dish that other creamy or rich sauces don’t. It’s a great substitute for otherwise heavier sauces such as demi glace on steak or hollandaise on eggs. Try it on your taco, beef or chicken. For plant based options – try it on roasted cauliflower steaks, baked potatoes or simply drink it from the bottle!

CHIMICHURRI RECIPE YIELDS 1¾ CUP Ingredients 1 head of cilantro, stems removed 1 head of parsley, stems removed 1 peeled lime 1/2 shallot 1 clove garlic 1 jalapeño, core removed 2/3 cup olive oil 1/3 red wine vinegar Salt and pepper to taste Directions 1. Combine the cilantro, parsley, peeled lime, shallot, garlic, jalapeño, olive oil, and red wine vinegar into a blender. 2. Blend on medium/high while scraping the edges and keeping the ingredients close to the blade using a tamper or a rubber spatula. Shelf Life: 1 week in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

PRESERVING & STORING HERBS 1. Snip the bottoms of the stems. 2. Dry the leaves of the herbs completely before placing in a jar filled with water. 3. Cilantro is best stored in the fridge as it loves cooler temperatures. Basil, on the other hand, is susceptible to the cold and

is ideally best stored in room temperature. Parsley can be stored in either the fridge or in room temperature. 4. Replace the water if it’s starting to become discoloured. Shelf life: 2 weeks or longer.

Are you ready for the big day?

7 ESSENTIALS FOR GRADS AND BRIDES Whether it’s your Graduation, Wedding or a special event, there are so many things to prepare for your big day. Thinking about these things in advance takes the stress out of the days leading up, so you can relax and look forward to the celebrations ahead. You may have invested in a gorgeous gown, shoes, and accessories to match... or maybe you’re opting for a more simple fashion statement. Clothing aside – one thing’s for certain: the most important investment to become event-ready is in creating your special glow. Evolution Beauty Bar offers services to get you looking and feeling photo-ready – from sun-kissed, glowing skin, to a hair and makeup look that will bring out your own special brand of beauty. Below, they are sharing with us their top 7 essentials... both tips and services that will help you feel your best for your big celebration!

1. Get organized in advance. This time of year, things book up quickly! Plan ahead and make your appointments well in advance so there is no disappointment in missing out.

2. Try it on ‘for size’. Do a trial run on hair and make up to ensure that you feel great in your chosen style and makeup look. Have fun pinteresting and looking through magazines to spot a few ideas to inspire your look. Be sure to bring them along to your trial to discuss what will work best for you. Love what the stylist did? Take lots of photos to bring along for the actual day. And don’t let that glam session go to waste, plan something fun after your appointment to flaunt your look!

3. When to wax. The last thing you’ll want to worry about on your big day is a ‘5 O’clock shadow’! Waxing is a great, longer-lasting option to remove hair and enjoy the benefits of smooth skin. Make sure to book your waxing appointment at least 4 days prior to event.

4. Get fresh faced. Prep your skin for makeup application with an amazing facial, which should be done 1 week prior to event to bring out your glowing skin.

5. Get your glow on. Spray tans to give the skin a healthy glow, which gives us all an extra confidence boost when rocking that special dress!

6. Ooh la la lashes. Lash Extensions are a fabulous way to avoid the hassle of false lashes and running mascara. As the length, shape and thickness can be customized, we recommend you have them applied 6 weeks in advance with 2 fills prior to event, to make sure they are for you.

7. Day of beauty. When planning your big day, give your self at least four hours of time to get ready.

Started by Alexis Warmerdam a fourth generation tulip farmer, the Abbotsford Tulip Festival has attracted hundreds of thousands of people from around the world since they opened in Spring 2016. Not surprising though, walking through the tulip fields is breathtaking. It’s on my list of things to do every year and each year does not disappoint.

I’ve personally been every year, a couple times during regular hours and for the last two years decided to wake up for their sunrise session. It seems silly setting that alarm and waking up before the sun hits the sky but the views of sunrise and fields of florals is always worth it.

As you prep for your own visit to the Abbotsford Tulip Festival I wanted to share some insider tips on how to make the best of your day. I’ve also got a list of some of my favourite places to explore after the festival as Abbotsford has some beautiful locally owned gems that you need to visit.

1. BU Y YO U R T I C K E T S O N L I N E Not only does purchasing your tickets online save you money – for weekends, which often sell out, it’s required as they may not offer tickets upon entry. Keep your eye on their social media for special announcements, sell out dates and discounted rates. Last year, they released tickets on each Tuesday for the week in advance. Note: Parking is free.

2. W E A R A P P RO P R I AT E F O OT W E A R To some this might seem like a silly thing to mention, but you’d be surprised how many people show up wearing sandals or heels. I’ve personally seen it a number of times while visiting. Keep in mind it’s a farm and boots are by far your best option for footwear.

THE

RELATIONSHIP PROJECT B Y J A K E A N D TAY LO R A L L E R

YOUR RELATIONSHIP AT HOME. ALL OUR HOMEBODIES RAISE YOUR HAND! Heck yes, we’re right there with ya sweet friend. We are all about that “Let’s stay home” life. Home is our happy place and we know it’s probably yours too.

Feel like you’ve got a handle on these? Check in anyway. Now the fun part.

Let’s start this off by saying that living together isn’t just one big sleep over. Yes, it can be awesome, don’t get us wrong, but it can also be awful.

1. Co-create rituals together.

• You spend money on what? • Seriously, the dishwasher is right there. • What is that smell? • Babe, come on, please stop piling that crap in the corner. • I’m trying to sleep! • Again, the toilet paper roll goes on this way… You can see where this was going, right? We’ve all been there. So how can we minimize these speed bumps and actually cultivate a culture at home that allows you to grow?

HERE’S OUR BEST ‘HOUSEKEEPING’ (HA-HA) TIPS:

1. Figure out your communication styles.

For lifestyle decisions, critiques, and feedback. For when things go awry, ’cause they will, you’ll know how to let each other know in a productive and kind way! Have many conversations on lifestyle things like diet, sleeping styles, alone time, decor, etc. See where you’re on the same page and where you’re not.

2. Make a decision about the division of household management. We’re talking about laundry, dishes, vacuuming, changing sheets, toilet cleaning, repairs, scheduling, frequency, who does what and how often, and most importantly – how do we introduce and continue having these conversations and dividing chores in productive ways?

3. Budget discussion.

Start with these questions: Are we comfortable talking about money? Who pays for what? Joint account? Groceries? Bills? Debts? Goals? If one of you is tight, what happens? Emergency fund?

REAL -ATIONSHIP QUESTIONS?

Photo: Amber Leigh Photography

HERE’S OUR BEST “INCORPORATE YOUR RELATIONSHIP AT HOME” TIPS: What would it look like if your bedtime routine was something you did together? What about your morning routine? What about on weekends? What about dinner time? Making pancakes together, reading before bed, one pouring the wine and the other turning on music, sounds pretty nice right?

2. Plan legit stay at home date nights.

We’re talking more than just Netflix and take out. We mean plan an activity, a theme, anything really. The more intentional the better. A video game marathon? A puzzle with music? A DIY project? “No electricity party”? Picnic on the floor? You see where we’re going here!

3. Work on your space together.

Whether it’s a full renovation, a de-clutter, a DIY project, new photos or artwork, creating a space unique to the two of you that you BOTH have a hand in brings pride in your home. It makes it for a more intimate space, items that tell the story of your love, and who wouldn’t want to enjoy that together? Bonus: It can be quality time spent together as well as the end result!

4. Put ‘Putzing’ and ‘Hometime’ in the calendar.

So much of the time spent at home with busy schedules is just eating, sleeping, and showering. Don’t let that happen. You know those older couples that just putz around the house together? They spend an hour or two at home just doin’ nothing? Yeah, you know how good that feels. Plan for that once a month and stick to it like an appointment. It will be worth it. There you have it friend, a great starting place to create your best relationship at home. Whether you’re just moving in together (Congrats!) or have been shacked up for a while, we hope you’ll take something away from these tips!

What would you like us to talk about next? We’re thinking a Q&A round up! Send in your best questions to promo@ilikeherstylevancouver.com and we gotcha covered.

THE B EAUT Y O F TH E BOOT Y

WHY WE GO GAGA FOR GLUTES Written by TurnFit Trainer Sarah DesRoches

Pop culture has been kind to me. As an 80’s baby, I grew up in the era of heroin-chic: rail thin models sporting Calvin Klein underwear and too much eyeliner. Fast forward to 2019 and suddenly my shape (or part of it, at least) is en vogue - a big booty. Thanks to some serious work in the gym and a dose of good genes, I’ve traded the body shame of my youth for skinny jeans and some swagger. So why should we care about the junk in our trunks – both aesthetically and biologically? Wider hips and a booty signal the physical ability to have a healthy pregnancy. A strong butt lends itself to better posture, carrying ourselves taller and with more confidence, and reducing the likelihood of low back pain. Let’s not forget the glutes make up the largest muscle group in the body, responsible for hip extension, internal rotation, and abduction of the hip. They help you stand, move your leg to the back, rotate your leg, and stabilize your entire pelvis. They improve your athletic performance by propelling you forward as you run, generating power, acceleration, and speed, keeping your knees stable when you land from a jump or change directions. Our increasingly sedentary modern lifestyle attributes to developing “dead butt” syndrome, where our glutes essentially turn off. The easiest way to check what your glutes are doing? Poke them! Yes, that’s right. When you squeeze your butt, your muscles should activate and you should feel a firmness that’s not there when you’re relaxed. If you don’t notice much of a difference, we recommend you start doing booty building exercises to get those glutes to work.

Photo: @thisisitstudios

G LU T E AC T I VAT I O N E X E RC I S E : B R I D G E S Lying on your back on the floor or a mat, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. With your arms on the ground at your sides, your heels should be just beyond reach. From here, lift your hips into the air, squeezing your butt as hard as you can (this is a good time to check and make sure they’re working). Do these 2-3 times a week for 3 sets of 30 seconds, or add them in as a warm up before your workout to get those glutes fired up. Once you’re sure you can get those glutes working, you’re okay to start challenging them a bit more to get the look you want.

PROGRESSING YOUR GLUTE WORK: TWO EXERCISES FOR GAINING SIZE 1. LU N G E W I T H R E A R K I C K . For this exercise, begin by performing a reverse lunge. Start standing with feet hip distance apart, with your hands on your hips. From there, step your right foot behind you and bend into a lunge so that both your front and back legs are at 90 degree angles. Keep your chest upright and tailbone pointing down to the floor, with your lower abdomen engaged. From the bottom of the lunge, shift your weight into the left leg while simultaneously straightening your left and right legs (you’ll be standing on your left leg with your right leg in the air behind you). Return to the bottom position of your lunge and repeat the motion for 45 seconds. Switch legs and repeat for another 45 seconds on the other side.

2. T H E S P L I T S QUAT. For this exercise, you’ll need a bench or the edge of a step. Stand beside the long edge of the bench, facing away from the bench (like it was a couch you’re about to sit down on). Carefully raise one foot and brace it against the edge of the bench behind you. Your hips should remain side by side, level, and facing forwards away from the bench. Next, slowly bend your front knee to lower into your squat. Keep your tailbone pointed down towards the ground - don’t stick your booty out (you’ll deactivate your glutes). Straighten the leg and press back up to standing position. Repeat. Perform 3 sets of 45 seconds for each leg. These exercises are a good start to your booty-building plan, but remember, they’re best included as part of a balanced workout program. You might be lusting after a bubble butt, but it won’t do you any good if the rest of your muscles don’t have the balance and strength to hold up all that junk in your trunk! Whether it’s a well researched plan of your own or a trainer-backed program from us at turnfit.ca, you’ll be well on your way to a beautiful booty and a great bod.

PRIV PODCAST:

Who are some of your favourite guests? Carla Hogg - Founder of Gentle Fawn. This was one that spoke to me personally, as she is 15 years behind her fashion brand. Her grace and perspective is one to admire.

DONNI RAE EDMONDSON PRIVILEGE FOUNDER

Q&A

Jillian Harris - Jillian is obviously a very influential woman, also very determined in business and we have done many collaborations together. Jillian brought her whole team on the podcast, and this is something I value highly. Highlighting their corporate culture was such a great “behind the scenes” for myself and our listeners.

We love our seasonal guest spot on PRIV Talks... but now, we’re turning the tables and asking the questions!

The corporate culture at our head office so accurately represented the hustle that any small-medium sized business likely experiences – and what PRIV Talks has evolved into is a community of multi-tasking women. It’s about the, well over 100, entrepreneurs, creators, hustlers, mothers, and self starters that we interview. It’s evolved in an unexpected way, as it started as a way to share my story. It has turned in to my source of inspiration.

What’s the most rewarding part of Podcasting? It is a gift to be able to disconnect from devices for ONE HOUR, in lieu of having a structured and in depth conversation. My personal need for connection and community is fueled but these interactions, and I find it to be such a genuine type of social media. I have had the opportunities to forge some really positive bonds through these podcasts, and even create friendships. Some amazing collaborations are in the works because of the podcast, and I credit some of my most creative ideas to some of these experiences. Which spring/summer trends will you be rocking this year? Ok… summer can’t come fast enough! We have possibly the prettiest collections that we have ever stocked! Our line of floral dresses has me mildly obsessed, as well the linen dresses and jumpsuits by Mink Pink are going to be my uniform. The 90’s are clearly back in full effect, so I’m excited to channel all of the clueless vibes for the second time. Lastly, can we talk about Levi’s? Nothing gets better than everybody’s favourite denim brand, and the prices are a refreshing break from the denim trend we have seen over the past decade!

Tara Bosch - Founder of Smart Sweets. I always go back to this guest because I think she has created such an amazing brand. You have to listen to understand, but this woman is worth the time. Don’t under-estimate this young woman and what she is creating. We have so many exciting guests coming to PRIV Talks, I don’t want to spoil anything, but one of the highlights for me was interviewing Jules Newmark, Founder of Newmark Models. Jules is both a total boss babe, and absolutely hilarious. She has built an empire and shares stories that had my head spinning! Stay tuned for that one…

Photos: Iulia Agnew

How did you start the PRIV Talks Podcast and how has it evolved? PRIV Talks started initially as an effort to gain a deeper connection with our Privilege community. As we ventured away from opening more brick and mortar locations, in lieu of e-commerce expansion, we felt a disconnect with our community. We thought, that by sharing a piece of our corporate culture with our consumers would create a deeper and more meaningful connection. The question “if people only knew…” was always aired around our head office. If people only knew what a day in the fashion industry REALLY looked like. If people only knew the process of what it takes for a garment to cycle through every level of the business. What would happen if people really KNEW the people behind the brand?

Miriam Alden - Founder of Brunette the Label. She is also my best friend and has been a frequent guest on the podcast. She’s such a boss, and the brand she has built blows my mind every single day! She’s making waves in the industry, and creating a women’s movement encompassing babes supporting babes. I could go on, but it’s not necessary.

VANCITY BUSINESS BABES

8 TIPS ON CULTIVATING A DREAM TEAM

CONNECT LAUGH NETWORK LEARN COLLAB Monthly Events Hosted in Vancouver

Over the past couple of years, as the Business Babes Collective brand has grown, I’ve had the pleasure of expanding our team. I’ve also spoken to many women building teams in our community and at our last event, ‘love your business’ we dove into this topic further. From my own experience and from conversations with our community, here are 8 tips on how to find and maintain a dream team: 1. Know Your Values: Get super clear on your company’s core values and the purpose of why you do what you do. 2. Hire People Different From You: Recognize your strengths and weaknesses and hire people who make up for your weaknesses. 3. Character Over Skills: Hire based on character, attitude, work ethic and values over skill set – most skills can be taught. 4. Get Social: Check out their social media platforms. You can tell a lot about someone by what they are posting on social media, who they are following and about their interests, personality, and values. 5.

Stay Connected: The only way to build a healthy work culture is to stay in consistent communication. Host calls with your business partners and team members regularly. If you live close by, do in-person meetings. If you are remote, do team calls via video conference (we love using zoom).

6. Keep Open Communication: Give and ask for feedback. Don’t shy away from hard conversations and be honest and open when issues arise or mistakes happen. Choose to talk about them. Discuss them openly and learn from the experience. 7. Create An Attractive Culture: As your business and team grow, try to create an attractive culture. This will help in your recruitment process and will have people begging to work with your business/brand. Create fun experiences with your team. 8. Have Fun: Try to connect on a more personal level. Ask them about their family, hobbies, goals, and encourage them not only in their work but also in their personal life.
