huts and gathering space at Kickapoo State Park are designed to be a unique experience that will leave the visitor with a sense of peace and connection with nature. The individual personalities of each hut will give the visitor an opportunity to select a hut location that best meets their camping desires. The gathering space is located in close proximity to the huts and directly on the edge of High Pond, for accessibility convenience and a beautiful view.

TWO FACE THIS PROJECT STARTED WITH THE IDEA OF LAYERS OF OCEAN WAVES. AS DRAWINGS AND STUDY MODEL DEVELOPED, THE IDEA EVOLVED INTO LAYERS OF SPACES UPON WAVES. TO FURTHER REINFORCE THE SPACE, WAVES WERE TAKEN OUT OF THE PROJECT AND REPLACED BY PLATFORMS. THE FINAL MODEL IS A LOW AND FLAT ARCHITECTURE WHICH HAS CANTILEVERING SPACES OVER THE IRREGULAR-SHAPED PLATFORMS.

ENSŌ Ensō is a circle painted in one uninhibited brushstroke. The circle is open and incomplete, representing the beauty of imperfection, or wabi-sabi, a principle of Japanese (asymmetry; irregularity), kanso (simplicity), koko (basic; weathered), shizen (without pretense; natural), yugen (subtly profound grace), datsuzoku (freedom), and seijaku (tranquility). I based my concept upon this idea of unity in design through Japanese aesthetics, implementing the principles harmoniously to create a cohesive design. The plan is made of simple planar elements to exhibit an abstract representation of the zen circle.

BRUTALIST ASCENSION INSPIRED BY THE IDEALS OF BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE, THIS MODEL USES MATERIALS SUCH AS CONCRETE, METAL, AND GLASS IN A DESIGN THAT PROTRAYS POWER AND STRENGTH. TWO PLANES ARE ORIENTED VERTICALLY WITH COMPLIMENTING FACADES ON EACH SIDE, WHILE INTERSECTING PLANES ARE USED TO CREATE A VARIETY OF OPEN,COVERED, AND CLOSED SPACES. AN ELEVATED PLATFORM SERVES AS THE SEPARATION BETWEEN THE STRUCTURE AND NATURAL LANDSCAPE BELOW.
