Tallinn Christmas market - Town hall Square 18.11.2016 - 07.01.2017 The fairytale atmosphere of this Christmas market, which is held on the Town Hall Square in Tallinn, makes anything possible! At the heart of it all - apart from Santa and his reindeers, who are eternal favourites with the kids - is Estonia’s most famous Christmas tree, surrounded by little huts selling their wares. Here you will find handicraft specialists and their work, Estonian food and drink of the season, snow sculptures and a mini-zoo for the little ones – including rabbits, goats, lambs, ponies and geese. A cultural programme is held as part of the market every weekend and on special days, with performances by song and dance groups and choirs from different counties. Christmas hike in South-Estonia On every year’s Christmas Day, 25th December a group of enthusiasts conquer 20 highest* peaks of South-Estonian hills. The 7 to 10 hour walk on a 25km trail gains new friends every time. For past few years the the participant count has reached over 200 people. It is a truly wonderful out the box option to spend one the darkest days of the year.
The first Christmas hike organized by Tartu University Student’s Nature Protection Circle took place in 1998. There were 30 participants who, instead of walking, cross country skied through the trail. Otepää Sauna Marathon Valga maakond, Kääriku küla 04.02.2017 - 04.02.2017 This sauna marathon sees registered teams attempting to experience as many of the saunas in and around Otepää as possible over a period of 6 hours. The start is at midday, with teams being given orienteering maps. All of the members of a team must be in each sauna for at least 3 minutes, with bonus points for dips in ice holes and cold water pools and use of other attractions provided by the sauna owners. The team that visits all of the saunas in the shortest time wins, with awards presented to them with the sauna owners at Kääriku Sport Centre. Bring your friends and join in on the fun! Tartu Marathon 2017 Valga maakond, Otepää linn 26.02.2017 - 26.02.2017 The Tartu Marathon is the best known and most popular skiing event of its kind in Estonia. It is held every year on the third Sunday in February and forms part of the international Worldloppet and Estonian Estoloppet crosscountry series. Documentary-style art book about Estonian design
orders: estoniandesignhouse.ee Michael Dumiak, the author: “A garden grown with the help of digital sensors—in your kitchen. A group of Russian immigrants, unmoored from the past, grappling with the future, standing in the looming shadow of their closed factories as tension grows on both sides of the border. Jewellery made from seahorses—and cosmic dust. Skype and its discontent. These are things you’ll find in the small and windswept Baltic nation of Estonia. Stories of the talented people who are creating there are what’s to be found in Woods and the Sea. In the telling, then, are their wry, hard-won and aesthetic insights into economy, culture, life and making. Estonians
live in a turbulent environment. Everyone knows everyone. Its designers engage every current, from stern Soviet orthodoxy to whirlwind globalisation, from plugging into a wired and forward-looking society to feeling the constants of seaside life and mushroom hunts in the deep woods. Taken up from Tallinn to the Onion Road along Lake Peipsi, found behind each smoothly-turned and curved plywood suitcase, space-age teapot and internet-connected miniature weather station, are tales and personalities. Woods and the Sea presents the story and personality of Estonian design and its distinctive style by taking the reader to the source.” 15

SHOPPING • OSTOKSET Estonia is a great shopping destination because prices are cheaper than in many other EU countries. Most shops in the Old Town and department stores throughout the city are open seven days a week, and major credit cards are widely accepted. Most shopping centres have free parking, wireless internet access, ATMs, a currency exchange booth or bank and places to eat & drink. Some of the shopping centres offer low cost playrooms, for the kids, with adult supervision so you can shop in peace.

BEAUTY PARLORS /kauneus hoitolat
Terveellisen, luonnonmukaisen ja puhtaan ruoan ystävä voi löytää ruokakaupasta korillisen hyviä virolaisia tuotteita: rahkaa, jogurttia, juustoja, talkkunaa ym. Makean nälkään löytyy helpotusta paikallisen karamelli-tehtaan tuotteista. Myös alkoholiosastolta löytyy hyvän virolaisen oluen lisäksi omaperäisiä tuotteita, joista kuuluisin on Vana Tallinn –likööri. Hinta tekee kyseiset tuotteet entistäkin houkuttelevammiksi. Maailman lehdistö on antanut korkeat arvosanat virolaisille ravintoloille, baareille, kahviloille (Newsweek on luokitellut Tallinnan 12 design-pääkaupungin joukkoon).

ESTONIAN CUISINE Although Estonian cuisine has not become overly popular compared to the delicacies of French, Italian or Chinese kitchens, quite interesting discoveries can be found from our traditional menu. Blood sausage, brawn, home-style barley bread, Mulgi cabbage, oatmeal, Baltic herring, oven potatoes and pork are just some examples of traditional Estonian foods. Such dishes are increasingly popular in the finest Estonian restaurants. Those interested in healthy and ecologically clean food can also find a basketful of premium Estonian foods from the grocery store: curd cheese, yoghurt, different cheeses, oatmeal, etc. The sweet-tooth will also find the produce of our local Estonian confectioners to be exceptionally tasty. Estonia also offers several distinctive products in the alcohol department. Besides good old Estonian beer, our most famous beverage is perhaps the liqueur, Vana Tallinn (Old Tallinn), and prices of these products make them even more attractive.

The international media has given Estonian restaurants, bars and cafeterias a high rating (Newsweek has listed Tallinn among the top 12 design capitals of the world). This credit is due to two factors: exceptionally stylish design and décor, as well as culinary achievements. People do not come to our restaurants just to eat and run, but rather to take their time and enjoy the experience. There is a wide variety of restaurants in Tallinn that provide their visitors with examples of different cuisines. At our finest restaurants it is advisable to make prior reservations.

But you can fly to Tallinn from all major European cities. By Bus: The bus service operates at least seven times a day, the total journey time being four hours from Tallinn to Kuressaare. At least nine direct buses daily travel each way between Tallinn and Kuressaare. There are four buses daily to/from Tartu and two buses daily to/from Pärnu. There are five buses daily between Virtsu and Saaremaa, and another five buses daily each way between Kuivastu (Muhu) and Kuressaare - a 1.5-hour trip timed to connect with ferry arrivals and departures. Likewise, at Virtsu you can board a bus bound to Tallinn or elsewhere. By Sea: Saaremaa is very popular with visiting yachties. The best harbour facilities are at the Nasva Yacht Club (Nasva Jahtklubi; tel: +372 75 140, fax: +372 55 257), 9km (5mi) west of Kuressaare. But Kuressaare Yacht Harbour is an international port for small ships. The harbour has received the Blue Flag for environmental friendliness. The car and passenger ferry from the mainland port of Virtsu operates hourly to Kuivastu in the summer and every two hours during the rest of the year. (The journey takes about half an hour.) In summer it is essential to reserve a place for your car in advance as far ahead as possible. Reservations can be made through the ferry terminals or at the Kuressaare booking office.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT Central Tallinn is very compact and easy to get around, and reaching farther out destinations is simple thanks to the city’s network of buses, trolleys and trams. Buses, trolleys and trams operate regularly from 6 to 23 (some lines until 24:00). The ticket system works on a random-inspection basis, so you can board via any door and don’t have to show anything to the driver. You must, however, have a validated ticket or you risk a €40 fine. Tallinn Card A Tallinn Card acts as a ticket, entitling the holder to unlimited free public transport for the period the card is active. It also gives you free admission to museums and signts, a free sightseeing tour of your choice and other discounts. Each time you board a vehicle, you must validate the ride using your Tallinn Card the same way you would with a Smartcard (see below). Find more information about the Tallinn Card here. Paper Ticket A single-ride paper ticket can be bought from the driver for cash – exact change only – when you first board. The ticket costs €2 (€1 for ISIC Student and Scholar Card holders) and is valid only for that ride in that vehicle. Keep the ticket handy for the duration of the ride. Smartcard The green, plastic Smartcard (Ühiskaart) is a farecard that lets you use the electronic ticket system. Buy it at any R-Kiosk, post office or the Tallinn City Government customer service desk for a €2 deposit and then load it with enough credit. The €2 Smartcard deposit can be reclaimed within 6 months of the first time the card was validated.

ESTONIAN SPAS • VIRON KYLPYLAT Besides being famous for Tallinn's historic Old Town, Estonia is gradually gaining a reputation for being a relaxation paradise. The country’s Nordic climate has contributed to the creation of numerous modern spas and health centres in beautiful natural surroundings, where it is possible to enjoy massage, hot Jacuzzi and a range of other health treatments, take a swim and visit beauty salons regardless of the weather outside. Historiallisen Tallinnan ohella Viro kerää yhä enemmän mainetta myös rentoutumisparatiisina. Pohjoismainen ilmasto on vauhdittanut useiden nykyaikaisten kylpylöiden ja kuntokeskusten perustamista luonnonkauniisiin paikkoihin, joissa on mahdollista nauttia säätä uhmaten lämpimistä porekylvyistä ja erilaisista hoidoista, uida tai käydä kauneussalongissa. Estonia’s beautiful sandy beaches, popular hotels and water parks and renowned spas and mud therapy centres have been attracting and pampering visitors for many years. The country’s spa traditions date back hundreds of years. One of the reasons such resorts developed here was the local mud, famed for its therapeutic qualities and which continues to be used today. Pärnu, Haapsalu, Kuressaare and Narva-Jõesuu have been fashionable resorts since the 1820s, while Värska, Kubija, Pühajärve, Toila, Viimsi and of course Tallinn also boast excellent spas. Virossa on vahvat historialliset kylpyläperinteet.
In Estonia you may in several places find therapeutic mud, the healing properties of which were known in folk medicine since ancient times. Spas in the present meaning of the word were established as early as in the 1820- 40’s. Establishments were especially built or reconstructed for the use of local seawater or mud for the treatment of ailments under the supervision of physicians. Today the main objectives of the spa treatments are to give prophylactic care and spa treatments of the kind, which hinder ailments from becoming chronic, lessening the need of sick care, thereby saving costs, and to restore the working capacity and general capacities of the ailing. In our continually more and more hectic rhythm of life many middle aged and even younger persons suffer from stress. In the course of time the Estonian spas have also partly changed their policy from being purely care centres towards being recreation centres, where the clients in addition to the treatments have the possibility to occupy themselves in various healthy activities, go in for sports or just relax and spend their time comfortably. Usealta Viron alueelta löytyy lääkitsevää mutaa, jonka hoitava vaikutus on kansanlääketieteen tiedossa ollut jo vuosisatojen ajan. Kylpylä nykyaikaisessa mielessä perustettiin tänne jo 1820-1830-luvulla. Paikallista merivettä tai mutaa alettiin lääkereiden valvonnassa siihen tarkoitukseen uudistetuissa tai varta vasten rakennetuissa rakennuksissa käyttää eri sairauksien hoitoon. 35

CITY MAP • KARTTA The unique value of Tallinn’s Old Town lies first and foremost in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most of the capitals of northern Europe. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Tallinn is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, from the 11th to 15th centuries, preserved nearly in its entirety. All the most important state and church buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved in their basic original form, as well as many citizens’ and merchants’ residences, along with barns and warehouses from the medieval period.
Tallinnan vanhakaupunki on vuodesta 1997 kuulunut Unescon maailmanperintöluetteloon.
