FACTS ABOUT ESTONIA • TIETOA VIROSTA Location Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, is located in Northern Europe in the north-eastern part of the Baltic Sea region. Area of Tallinn - 159,2 km² (Estonia 45 227 km²). Climate The climate in Tallinn is characterized by a fairly cold winter, a cool spring with little precipitation, a moderately warm summer and a long and rainy autumn. Some summers have weeks at a stretch of temperatures around +30°C, and a warm, sunny summer can keep autumn at bay until mid-October. Average temperature in July +16,7°C. Average temperature in February -4°C Weather forecast in the Internet: www.weather.ee/tallinn Time Estonia is in the Eastern European Time Zone: GMT + 2 hours. In summer: GMT + 3 hours. Population The population of Tallinn is 403 547 (01.09.2008). Nationalities: Estonian 52.3%, Russian 38.5%, Ukrainian 3.9%, other 5,3%. Language Estonian’s official language is Estonian. Russian, Finnish, English and German are also understood and widely spoken. Religion The largest denomination is Lutheran (30%) followed by Russian Orthodox (28%), and Catholic (3%). However, only about 20% of Estonians practice any religion. Communications It’s a testing ground for mobile services – you can pay for parking and goods, create your own mobile service and Skype was invented here. As we are a small country costs are the same wherever you call. Some hotels will give you free phone calls within Estonia to all landlines. To ring Estonia from abroad, dial +372 before the number. Internet Public Internet access points have been set up all over Estonia. Access to wireless, free internet is approaching 100% in Tallinn - even in the parks and beaches - and no hotel dares charge for it now. The departure lounge at Tallinn airport has free internet access points for passengers. Post Offices Post offices still exist in the larger towns and are worth seeking out, as they sell low priced postcards, stamps. Medical Services Pharmacies are usually open from 10:00-19:00, but one stays open all night (Tõnismäe Apteek, Tõnismägi 5, ph: +372 644 2282). Ordinary medication is available in all pharmacies. Sijainti Viron pääkaupunki Tallinna sijaitsee Pohjois-Euroopassa Itämeren rannalla. Tallinnan pinta-ala on 159,2 km² (koko Viron 45 227 km²). Ilmasto Tallinnassa on yleensä suhteellisen kylmä talvi, viileä ja vähä-sateinen kevät, melko lämmin kesä ja pitkä, sateinen syksy. Joskus kesäisin lämpötila kipuaa viikoiksi 30 asteeseen ja kesäisen lämmin sää saattaa jatkua lokakuun puoliväliinkin saakka. Väesto Tallinnassa on asukkaita 403 547 (01.09.2008). Virolaisia 52,3%, venäläisiä 38,5%, ukrainalaisia 3,9% ja muita 5,3% (latvialaisia, liettualaisia, suomalaisia, saksalaisia, tataareja, puolalaisia). Kieli Viron virallinen kieli on viro. Venäjää, suomea, englantia ja saksaa käytetään Tallinnassa myös paljon. Uskonto Kristillisistä kirkoista suurimmat ovat luterilainen (30%), ortodoksinen (28%) ja katolinen (3%). Yleensä vain 20% virolaisista kuulu mihinkään kirkkoon. Soittaminen Viro on mobiilipalveluiden koelaboratorio – voit maksaa kännykällä pysäköinnistä ja monista tavaroista, luoda oman kännykkäpalvelusi ja Skype keksittiin täällä. Joissakin hotelleissa saat ilmaiset puhelut Viron sisällä lankaliittymiin. Matkapuhelinverkot toimivat kaikkialla, myös pienillä saarilla ja merellä kotimatkallasi. Soitaessasi Viroon ulkomailta valitse +372 numeron eteen. Jos aiot viipyä Virossa hieman pidempään ja soittaa paikallispuheluja, kannattaa ehkä ostaa pre-paid -palvelun SIMkortti. Internet Pääsy ilmaiseen langattomaan internettiin alkaa Tallinnassa jo lähestyä 100%:ia. Nettiin pääsee jopa puistoissa, uimarannoilla, Tallinnan vanhankaupungin toreilla, stadioneilla jm. Yleisissä kirjastoissa pääsee käyttämään konetta ilmaiseksi. Posti Postikonttoreita on vielä suurimmissa Viron kaupungeissa. Postitoimistot ovat yleensä avoinna arkisin klo 9.00-18.00 ja lauantaisin klo 9.00-15.00. Tämän alueen uusin ja tärkein vetonaula on suomalaisen arkkitehdin Pekka Vapaavuoren suunnittelema taidemuseo KUMU. • Ei kovin kaukana Kadriorgista näet erään kansallisen symbolin – Lauluaukion, jossa joka neljäs vuosi pidetään Laulujuhlat, joihin kymmenet tuhannet kansallispukuiset laulajat kerääntyvät. • Käy toki jossain museossa, jos haluat tutustua historiaamme tai kulttuuriimme. The number for the family doctor helpline is 1220, but again ask locals to make the call since there is no guarantee that the doctor on call will speak English. Police is very helpful and trained to give first aid. Estonia’s medical services are as good as, if not better, than those in most other EU countries. Pharmacies are well stocked with basic and prescription medicines but note that some medicines that are available in stores and supermarkets in other countries - such as Aspirin and various ointments - are only available in pharmacies in Estonia. Herbal remedies and other organic products are also available in some supermarkets and nature shops.

Make sure that you either have a valid ticket before getting on public transportion or that you buy one from the driver immediately upon entering. If you need to buy a ticket, enter at the front door; tickets are only sold at stops, not while the vehicle is moving. Note that tickets bought from the driver are more expensive than those bought at a newsstand. Bus, trolley and tram tickets can be purchased at newsstands for 0.96 EUR or from the driver for 1,6 EUR. You can also buy a 10 ticket package for 6.39 EUR. The Tallinn Card holders may use unlimited public transportation free. Validate your ticket right after entering at a machine located throughout the bus, trolley or tram. Passengers travelling with false tickets or without tickets will be fined. Tallinn public transport offers also 1 and 2-hour tickets as well as 1 and 3-day tickets. These tickets can be bought only at newsstands and not from the driver. A 1-hour ticket costs 1,02 EUR and a 2-hour ticket 1,34 EUR. A day ticket (24 h) costs 4,47 EUR and a 3-day (72 h) ticket 7,35 EUR. Electronic devices for registering these tickets are situated at the first and second door of the vehicle and will print the time and the date of validity on the ticket. Driving In Estonia, as in continental Europe, the traffic drives on the right-hand side of the road. Estonian law requires an international driver’s license and valid insurance policy. During daylight hours, dipped headlights or daytime driving lights must be switched on. After dark, the main headlights must be switched on. The driver and the passengers must wear seatbelts at all times. Speed limits are as follows, unless marked otherwise: 1. In residential areas, maximum speed limit 20 km/h 2. In built-up areas, maximum speed limit 50 km/h 3. Outside built-up areas, maximum speed limit 90 km/h, and in summer, some roads allow maximum speeds of 110 km/h. International fuel stations are easy to find. The largest international chains operating in Estonia are Statoil and Neste. By Air: You can fly to Kuressaare, Saaremaa from Tallinn and Stockholm. But you can fly to Tallinn from all major European cities. By Bus: The bus service operates at least seven times a day, the total journey time being four hours from Tallinn to Kuressaare. At least nine direct buses daily travel each way between Tallinn and Kuressaare. There are four buses daily to/from Tartu and two buses daily to/from Pärnu. There are five buses daily between Virtsu and Saaremaa, and another five buses daily each way between Kuivastu (Muhu) and Kuressaare - a 1.5-hour trip timed to connect with ferry arrivals and departures. Likewise, at Virtsu you can board a bus bound to Tallinn or elsewhere.
By Sea: Saaremaa is very popular with visiting yachties. The best harbour facilities are at the Nasva Yacht Club (Nasva Jahtklubi; tel: +372 75 140, fax: +372 55 257), 9km (5mi) west of Kuressaare. But Kuressaare Yacht Harbour is an international port for small ships. The harbour has received the Blue Flag for environmental friendliness. The car and passenger ferry from the mainland port of Virtsu operates hourly to Kuivastu in the summer and every two hours during the rest of the year. (The journey takes about half an hour.) In summer it is essential to reserve a place for your car in advance as far ahead as possible. Reservations can be made through the ferry terminals or at the Kuressaare booking office.

Lahemaa – the first and largest national park in Estonia Lahemaa National Park provides a great overview of most of the natural and cultural landscapes characteristic of Estonia. Lahemaa (Land of Bays) was named after the bodies of water between its peninsulas. Lahemaa National Park is only an hour’s drive from Tallinn. The visitor centre is located in Palmse; in Sagadi you can take a look at the forest museum, and in Oandu you can take part in the activities of the nature school. The former resort area Võsu is excellent for beach holidays.

In Estonia you may in several places find therapeutic mud, the healing properties of which were known in folk medicine since ancient times. Spas in the present meaning of the word were established as early as in the 1820- 40’s. Establishments were especially built or reconstructed for the use of local seawater or mud for the treatment of ailments under the supervision of physicians. Today the main objectives of the spa treatments are to give prophylactic care and spa treatments of the kind, which hinder ailments from becoming chronic, lessening the need of sick care, thereby saving costs, and to restore the working capacity and general capacities of the ailing. In our continually more and more hectic rhythm of life many middle aged and even younger persons suffer from stress. In the course of time the Estonian spas have also partly changed their policy from being purely care centres towards being recreation centres, where the clients in addition to the treatments have the possibility to occupy themselves in various healthy activities, go in for sports or just relax and spend their time comfortably. CITY MAP • KARTTA The unique value of Tallinn’s Old Town lies first and foremost in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most of the capitals of northern Europe. Since 1997, the Old Town of Tallinn has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Tallinn is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, from the 11th to 15th centuries, preserved nearly in its entirety. All the most important state and church buildings from the Middle Ages have been preserved in their basic original form, as well as many citizens’ and merchants’ residences, along with barns and warehouses from the medieval period.
