Emergency Exercises for Earthquake-prone Northern Chile By Karen Riquelme

More than 266,000 people participated in an emergency drill in northern Chile, which is often hit by earthquakes.

Yesterday, the Chile’s national emergency office, ONEMI, conducted an emergency drill in the regions of Arica-Parinacota, Tarapaca, Antofagasta and Atacama. This drill emulated an earthquake of magnitude 9.2 on the Richter scale and with greater intensity of grade X on Mercalli Scale, which was accompanied by a subsequent hypothetical tsunami. Chilean Postal Workers Go on Strike By Valentina Ostovary

Chilean postal workers continued their national strike, demanding a salary increase. SANTIAGO — Since midnight on Wednesday, more than 5,000 trabajadores de correo are on strike. The duration is still ambiguous, but the workers demand an increase of CL$45,000 (about US$90) in the monthly salary of each worker and a bonus by the end of the conflict. Before the official start of the strike, the workers were performing sit-down strikes with demonstrations on the premises and the streets, bicycle rides and cultural events for more than a week. A key point in the protest is the great divide between Chile’s postal workers march in downtown Santiago. Photo: Daniel Boyle the salaries of the workers and the executives. Barcelona Stars Show Support for Tocopilla By Daniel Boyle

Some of Barcelona’s most popular players have taken to Twitter to show support for Chilean teammate Alexis Sanchez and his birthplace, Tocopilla. TOCOPILLA — “¡Fuerza Tocopilla!. Reconstrucción y médicos especialistas. Ya” (Strength to Tocopilla! Reconstruction and medical specialists already!). With these words in a post on Facebook, Alexis Sánchez gave his voice to the social movement in Tocopilla, with his teammates showing support. Among the players to express their support were Cesc Fabregas, Andrés Iniesta, Dani Alves and Pedro Rodríguez. The support of these stars has now made Tocopilla’s plight world news. November 14, 2007 saw a 7.7 earthquake shake the foundations of the city. While government figures claim that reconstruction from the 2010 8.8 earthquake is almost complete, Tocopilla continues waiting. The themes of decentralization, power, energy and isolation have led to a similar situation to 2012′s uprising in Aysén. Sánchez described the situation in Tocopilla to Spain’s Sport. “We’ve been waiting a long time for help. When people are seriously ill, they need to travel two hours to see a specialist. The earthquake destroyed schools and left people without a roof. We’ve been waiting a long time but the help still hasn’t arrived.” The Barcelona player recently visited Tocopilla during his vacations, with a promise to invest in social programs for the community. He has also taken the role of Santa Claus each Christmas, giving gifts to children of the town.

Among the demands from the Tocopilla movement is a discount on energy prices. “We produce almost all the energy in Chile, yet we pay the highest price,” said San Román in a speech. The full speech can be seen at El Ciudadano. The health problems generated by Tocopilla’s thermoelectric plants were the subject of a 2009 documentary, “” target=”_blank”>Tocopilla Me Mata“. Like in Aysén, the lack of response from the top authorities in La Moneda has caused frustration at a local level. Negotiations between San Román and Antofagasta’s regional authorities have not reached agreement, with the Tocopilla community demanding a ministerial visit.

Camila Vallejo Inspires Song By Bright Eyes Man By Daniel Boyle

Chilean student leader Camila Vallejo has inspired a song by Desaparecidos, the recently reunited group led by Conor Oberst.

OMAHA, UNITED STATES – The speedy punk song, titled “Te Amo Camila Vallejo“ adds to a collection of political inspired works by the band, who reformed in 2012 after a ten year hiatus. “In winter we will march, in spring the city will be ours,” are among the lyrics in the song. The new single, which also features “The Underground Man”, adds to a collection of politically inspired tracks by the group, including “The Left is Right” and “MariKKKopa”. The name of the group is influenced by those victims who disappeared in various South American countries under dictatorships, including the reign of Augusto Pinochet in Chile. Desaparecidos is a clear difference with the softer sounds of Bright Eyes, with many rock and punk critics welcoming the return of the group to the live scene. The band will tour the United States in the coming months before visiting Australia for the Harvest festival.

Vallejo captured world attention as the face of the Chilean student movement in 2011 and is currently running for deputy in the seat of La Florida. The former student leader recently completed her studies in Geography with a high distinction.

Athletes and Entertainers Encourage Chileans to “Do More By Karen Riquelme

A variety of Chile’s stars of entertainment and extreme sports joined together in calling for Chileans to “Do More”. SANTIAGO — The Cultural Center “Mori” hosted the Rexona Do More Talks Cycle, where different characters of sport and entertainment joined a relaxed conversation about their lives, using the slogan “Haz Más- Do More”, referring to those people who day by day challenge themselves in order to reach their goals. Alejandra Ugalde, Unilever Marketing Manager said that “With this new campaign, Rexona seeks to inspire people to do more of those things that make us get into action and that fill our lives of exciting emotions ” She also added that “We want to promote the enjoyment of every moment, and go for more. “ Big wave surfer Ramón Navarro, who made one of the most acclaimed interventions, remember the time he had to sell bread and work as a waiter to survive, pointing that “I constantly push myself to go further, so I made all my triumphs. I have come to places that I never thought would go, and everything has been due to my efforts and the support of my people. “ The rest of the exhibitors also expressed satisfaction with their presentations, agreeing how interesting the

Chilean Minister Promotes Study Tours for Underprivileged Students By Camila Chapa

Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Félix de Vicente, along with Undersecretary of Tourism, Daniel Pardo, launched a new season for Sernatur social program “Gira de Estudio”. MACUL — Minister for Economy, Development and Tourism Félix de Vicente took the task of driving tourism in Chile quite literally, driving the bus to visit Macul’s Liceo Polivalent Mercedes Marín del Solar to announce some good news. The program “Gira de Estudios” aims to allow most vulnerable teenagers of the country to travel throughout Chile thanks to the 70% subsidy the government provides by means of the National Tourism Service (SERNATUR).This makes possible that each student only pays CLP$38,000 for a six-day program during low season and only CLP$43,000 during high season. Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Félix de Vicente said, “this new season of Sernatur social program will have 3,000 new vacancies providing more students with the opportunity to travel with their classmates and live this unforgettable student trip”. Among the news, he stresses that Arica y Parinacota and Antofagasta regions have joined the program, meaning all of Chile will participate in this program. He added, “once this new season finishes, there will be more than 100,000 students that have benefited from the Gira de Estudio Program. This number will be added to the 8.5 million Chileans who are already traveling throughout the country; thus contributing greatly to make our tourism accessible to all Chileans”. On the other hand, Undersecretary of Tourism, Daniel Pardo said, “apart from giving the chance to get to know the country, it is a moment that contributes to the cultural and educational capital of students and strengthens bonds among classmates. According to our studies, 99% of teenagers recommend this experience; 70% says this trip was something positive to strike up friendship while 60% says these trips are useful to improve the relation with teachers”. 10

“I never ever forgot my study trip”, said Minister Félix de Vicente to Liceo Marín del Soler students, wishing this experience could be meaningful and unforgettable. This way, he invited people to participate on the website and make the most of traveling with school friends. The study programs visit destinations in low season, bringing in extra support to Chile’s small and medium tourist businesses. The government finances more than 70% of the holiday package for each student participating and 100% for teachers and inspectors accompanying. Schools have to apply to this program so their students can get this benefit. The schools selected are those that have IVE-SINAE points (vulnerability index) generated by Junaeb (Junta Nacional de Auxilio Escolar y Becas)

Chilean Senate Approves Ministerio de Deportes By Daniel Boyle

Chile’s Senate has voted to approve the creation of a Ministry of Sport (Ministerio de Deportes). A long road for Chile’s athletes draws closer to an end. VALPARAÍSO — Last week saw a number of Chile’s leading athletes make the journey to Valparaíso, hoping to celebrate the creation of a new ministry. Led by former tennis star Fernando González, the athletes were left dumbfounded when Senator Fulvio Rossi requested a motion for more time to analyse the text, citing the lack of regional secretaries (SEREMIs) within the law. The action came despite the fact that Rossi was a key instigator of 2009′s attempt to create a Ministerio de Deportes y Juventud (Ministry for Sport and Youth). This planned ministry, which never became a reality, did not have plans for any regional secretaries. The proposed ministry, likely to become a reality by November will have various functions relating to the creation of Chile’s sporting policies. Government spokeswoman Cecilia Pérez spoke at the Senate, giving special praise to González. “It took 110 years for Chile to win an Olympic gold medal. Fernando González, who was the winner (along with Nicolás Massú), in retirement continues to fight for athletes to have better infrastructure, autonomy and the independence they deserve,” said the minister. The vote was passed with 34 in favor and one abstention (Ximena Rincón), with zero votes against. The ministry will have responsibility for both high performance sport as well as increasing physical activity throughout the country. González tweeted after the event: “Once again sport unites the people and the big winners are all Chileans. A call to keep working in unity. Viva Chile.”

The Ministry of Sports had strong support from a range of athletes. Photo: Mark Teiwes

The unity of Chile’s athletes is a factor that has surged in 2012, with the creation of the Agrupacion DAR Chile, a group of high performance athletes working together to improve the prominence of Chile’s athletes. Chile’s athletes will hope the new ministry will follow in the footsteps of the Ministry of Culture, which has paved the path for an increased focus on Chile’s cultural scene, with Chile hosting major events as well as playing key roles on the international stage. The first high-profile challenge will be to run a successful South American Games in 2014, while Chile will hope to gain hosting rights to the 2019 Pan American Games. Chile will also hope to feature on the medal tally at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil. Once the ministry is signed in to law, a minister will need to be approved, with the athletes hoping for somebody with a sporting background.

Chile Market Wrap August 9, 2013 By Randy Havre

Randy Havre presents his weekly market wrap for I Love Chile. This week was highlighted by improved data from China helping Chile’s IPSA. SANTIAGO — This week in Chile we were witness to the “China Rally” that started on Wednesday after the IPSA hit another new 52-week low at 3,659, but it was not enough to make for a positive week. The IPSA closed the week at 3,776.10, down 43.98 points or 1.1 percent.

China Rally China’s exports in July were up 5.1 percent from the year earlier period compared to a drop of 3.1 percent in June. Imports were up 10.9 percent from the year earlier period compared to a drop of 0.7 percent in June. Most notably was that copper imports were up 8.1 percent to 410,680 tonnes.

The news sent Chilean stocks higher, made for a stronger peso and copper prices spiked.

The peso also responded to the rally strengthening by Friday to close the week at CL$507.40, up CL$6.15 or 1.2 percent. From Wednesday’s low of CL$516, Then on Friday before the Chilean market opened just off the 52-week low of CL$517, the move was China followed up with factory output in July up 9.7 more dramatic with a jump of CL$9 in just two days. percent, beating expectations and up June’s rise of 8.9 percent. Copper prices have been weak thus far in 2013 but In the US the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down we learned this week that even at the lower prices, for the week, the first time in 7-weeks. The Dow closed volume grew enough that total exports in July hit US$3.35 at 15,425.51, off 232.85 points for the week or down billion compared to July 2012’s US$3.15 billion. Also the Chilean Mining Ministry reported that they are now 1.5 percent. the worst percentage drop for a week expecting a total of US$112 billion of copper investment since early June. between now and 2021, up from their previous estimate of US$104 billion.

13

ILOVECHILE DIGITAL Related to future investment in the industry, Codelco has opted to go to the international debt market to help fund the shortfall from their annual request to the Chilean government for capital expenditures. Codelco had requested US$4.2 billion but the government has only agreed to US$1 billion. Last week Moody’s Rating Agency had put Codelco’s rating at A1 credit on negative watch, citing falling copper prices, but this week S&P Rating Agency went the other direction, jumping Codelco’s rating two notches to AA-, citing closer ties with the Chilean government. Codelco felt the timing was right in respect to interest rates and an upgrade from S&P so they issued US$750 million in 10-years notes at 4.5 percent interest. Unfortunately the offering was not well received by investors as their “bid-to-cover” ratio was about 2-to-1 where you would have expected to see more like 3-to-1 from a firm that has the credit rating of Codelco’s. Bond buyers (the bond market is considered to be the “smart market”) said that higher cap-ex needs, lower copper prices and slower Chinese growth weighed heavily in their decision-making.

Corpbanca Boost In company news, Corpbanca, controlled by billionaire Alvaro Saieh, got a boost as BTG Pactual reiterated their “buy” recommendation for Chile’s fourth largest bank. They cited the Colombian acquisition of Helm Bank which they says will bring US$100 million in annual savings and give them the needed growth from Colombia to off-set a slowing Chilean economy. In another company controlled by Saieh, retailer SMU, which owns Unimarc, received approval from their shareholders to obtain US$600 million in new equity. They originally where looking for US$500 million with the proceeds going to “reduce short-term debt and make solvent the investment needs in fixed income.” The company is also looking at various assts sales and cost reductions to bolster their balance sheet. “With the approval of this capital increase and with the implementation of the (cost reduction and asset sale) plans, the company will be able to greatly reduce its debt and be better equipped to face organic growth over the coming three years.”

14

FINANCIAL

Chilean brewer and bottler CCU posted a rise in second quarter 2013 profit, up 36.4 percent to US$30.6 million compared to the year earlier period. The company that is controlled by the Luksic family’s Quineco holding company and Heineken NV saw prices rise faster than costs. Revenues for the same period were up 11.5 percent. CCU shares closed at CL$7,398.60 on the IPSA, up 5.0 percent for the week.

Poor performance for CAP Going in the different direction, iron ore and steel group CAP registered second quarter 2013 earnings of US$56.5 million, down 54.6 percent from the year earlier period. Lower metal prices and slowing demand contributed to the shortfall. CAP shares hit a new 52-week low of CL$8.900.00 on the IPSA, but then recovered thanks to the economic news out of China to close the week at CL$9,864.20, up 3.5 percent for the week, with a 3.9 percent upside move just on Friday.

Potash breakup effects continue Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile’s (SQM) shares are still reeling from the break-up of the potash cartel which most feel will result in at least a 25 percent drop in prices. Potash sales represented 53 percent of SQM’s revenue in 2012. The down draft in all their competitors, most off at least 25 percent in a matter of days of the news release has gotten the attention of analysts in respect to valuations. On Friday analysts at BGC Financial upgraded two of the main players in the industry, Potash Corp and Mosaic Co. from a “hold” to a “buy” rating, citing that their shares have dropped so much that there is real value in the companies. They have put a price target on Potash of US$37.00 per share, a 20 percent potential upside. Potash shares were trading at US$39.00 per share prior to the news. SQM shares responded as predicted to the upgrades jumping Friday to CL$18,000 per share, up CL$900.00 or 5.26 percent. SQM shares were trading at CL$20,600 prior to the news.

Economic News out of China Boosts Copper Peso IPSA By Randy Havre

China released economic numbers today that indicate the six-month slowdown in the country’s economy might have bottomed. Better than expected export numbers and a raise in copper imports indicate that the Chinese government’s target of 7.5 percent growth for 2013 is achievable. China’s exports in July were up 5.1 percent from the year-earlier period compared to a drop of 3.1 percent in June. Imports were up 10.9 percent from the year earlier period compared to a drop of 0.7 percent in June. Most notably was that copper imports were up 8.1 percent to 410,680 tonnes. The news sent copper prices up US$0.10 per pound or 3.1 percent to US$3.27 per pound, the highest in two months. Going into the report traders were negative on copper and there was a near-record amount of “short” positions, betting on the downside. So part of the move upward is attributed to short covering. The next few months are generally seasonally slower in respect to demand so traders will be watching to see if the price movement will be sustained. Three stocks that had also registered 52-week lows yesterday are helping the index’s move up: Sociedad Part of the upward basis is from dollar weakness as Quimica y Minera de Chile SA up 2.65 percent, Banco copper is priced in dollars. The peso also moved to Santander Chile up 2.33 percent, and LATAM Airlines the upside nicely, rising from close to its 52-week low Group up 2.67 percent. of CL$517, up CL$7.800 to CL$508.40. Dole Chile to Invest US$20M in Renovations and Expansions By Randy Havre

Dole Chile will be renovating three fruit plants with a US$20-million investment, which includes expansion in their San Bernardo plant. In an interview with FreshFruitPortal.com, Dole Chile President Juan Pablo Vicuna said that the renovated plants are located in Coquimbo, Rancagua (Codegua) and Lontue. “This year’s initiative to renovate the plants in Coquimbo, Rancagua and Lontué, as well as amplification in San Bernardo, will allow Dole Fresh Fruit’s division in Chile to manage increased volume over the next five years and improve efficiency in packing, cold storage and logistics.” Dole Chile exports to 70 countries and expects an 8 percent growth in business for 2013 to total approximately US$300-million. “Dole is giving a clear signal that we see a positive future for the Chilean fruit industry. We also believe the high price cycle for minerals has come to its end. We hope the fruit industry will have greater relative importance coupled with an exchange rate more fit for the Chilean reality,” according to Vicuna.

In the San Bernardo plant for Dole Vegetables the expansion is needed to meet increased demand, “Considering packing, conditioning and storage, the plant is being expanded with a 10-year time frame and projected annual growth of 20 percent,” according to Vicuna.

The break-up of the “potash cartel” is expected to lower fertilizer costs by as much as 25 percent, and There was no indication on any changes in employment the peso dropped from CL$465 in April to over CL$500 numbers for the different plants and facilities in respect to the renovations and expansion. in June, and has stayed in a trading range since. Chile’s Helen Keller Students Enjoy Ski Program at La Parva By Guest Writer

La Parva hosted the adaptive ski program for students from Chile’s Helen Keller School in honor of Case Ronde. LA PARVA — The 6th annual Case Ronde adaptive ski program got under way at La Parva last Thursday for 8 lucky students from Colegio Hellen Keller (CHK) in Ñuñoa. Case Ronde was a passionate ski instructor who came to Chile for medical treatment while continuing to share his love of skiing with visitors to La Parva. Case was instrumental in getting the CHK program established and his passing was a great loss to the skiing community both in Chile and North America. The program consists of 4 weekly lessons provided by the La Parva Ski School for 6 students from CHK, all of whom are blind or visually impaired. Most of the outstanding instructors come from Spain and have been participating in the program since its inception in 2007. They seem to develop an almost instant rapport with the students, gaining their trust and giving them the confidence to put their skis on and follow them out onto the snow. By the end of the first day all of the students were confidently skiing down the beginners slope (with the tips of their skis tied together), following instructions to make turns to the left and to the right, before lining up to get on the Magic Carpet to return to the top of the slope. Only occasionally did one of the blind students fall, unlike many of the other beginners that day who spent a considerable time on their bottoms. Chatting away to their instructors, laughing and throwing snowballs at one another, it was clear they were having the time of their lives.

In addition to the 6 skiers, another two students per week come up to experience a day in the snow. They love to walk around in the snow, slide down the slopes on plastic bags, build snowmen and ride on the Magic carpet too. After her first ride on the Magic Carpet, one of the non-skiers stated: “Quiero esquiar”. For all of the students, this was their first experience of being up in the mountains. The feel of the snow, the fresh air, the friendship and the exhilaration of doing something you never thought possible will be lasting memories for these students. The team of dedicated volunteers who accompany the students to La Parva are constantly amazed at their progress and achievements and they too have the time of their lives. Written by Nicky Howe

Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Keys, Franz Ferdinand , Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Alabama Shakes and many others, are still ringing in our ears. Chilean Municipalities Join Forces for Cycling Event By Karen Riquelme

Four Santiago municipalities joined forces to promote physical activity throughout Chile’s capital in the CicleoRecreoVia event. SANTIAGO — More than 22, 000 people attended to the CicloRecreoVia Marathon, event which joined for the first time 4 communes of Santiago in long tracks. La Reina, Providencia, Las Condes and Santiago. Some of the busiest streets of Santiago were closed off to motor vehicles, including Andrés Bello, Pedro de Valdivia and Plaza Italia in Providencia, as well as key streets in the city center. The purpose of this initiative was to close the streets to motorized traffic and open it for people who wanted to take advantage of this opportunity and use it to practice sports such as running, skating, biking, among others. To count the number of participants, the company Geomás, installed sensors in different parts of the track. At 11 am, the censors started to count more and more participants, and at 2pm more than 22,000 participants were registered by the sensors, number which compared to the last Santiago Marathon was considered as “successful”. Lina Zuluaga, director of CicloRecreoVía declared that “The activity was a success, so we expect the number of participants continues to grow in the upcoming events.” Moreover, during the morning several activities such as Power Dance were provided by the organizers. People who attended to the event felt very excited, stating that “It was a great opportunity to encourage a healthy life style”. Apart from the activities, some stands that offered healthy food such as vegetables and fruits were installed along the circuit, in order to inform people about the benefits and importance of keeping a good nutrition. Providencia Mayor Josefa Errázuriz said that this experience was “A response to the request of the residents of this neighborhood who wanted to take 22

advantage of the public places.” She also added that “with the help of the authorities, we will create better projects. Errázuriz also said that there are several negotiations for extending this experience to Quinta Normal and improving its conditions, as she pointed that this sector of Santiago has a lack of green areas and recreational places. However, Santiago mayoress Carolina Tohá pointed that the main drawback to extend those areas will be the transport, which did not authorize the creation of a section which was supposed to join Santiago with the Quinta Normal and Estación Central municipalities. Moreover, she anticipated that some new routes connecting the western part of Santiago will be enabled during the first week of September. The event marked a joining of initiatives that have been growing in various municipalities throughout Santiago, with an eventual hope to have the entire city connected, as happens in Bogota, Colombia.

Year of Innovation: Neuroscience Made in Chile Two companies, participating the “Start-Up Chile” program introduce their newest technology. By Valentina Ostovary

To transform Chile into the innovation and entrepreneurial centre of Latin America, the program Start-Up Chile chooses different companies annually and provides a safe environment for them, to start their businesses in Chile. SANTIAGO — The Start-Up Chile program aims ” to attract world-class early stage entrepreneurs”, offering US$40,000 seed capital, a temporary 1-year visa and access to the best social and capital networks in the country. Thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry of Economy and CORFO in this project, “it was possible to develop a tool, able to quantify the progression of neurodegenerative diseases and a low-cost system that allows real-time observation of brain activity in Chile”, said Executive Vice President of CORFO, Hernán Cheyre. The two introduced companies “Infratec Bioingeniería” and “Backyard Brains” presented their new and innovative input into Chile’s neuroscience. Around the world, more than 7 million people suffer from Parkinson’s disease. The symptoms of the illness, such as tremor, could until now only been evaluated visually, which made it impossible to determine which stadium of the illness is outstanding. “The symptoms started showing smoothly over time. So if you ask me, I would really like to know if the disease has steps or phases, in which of those phases I am and how many of them are still to come”, said Silvia Soto Poblete, suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Infratec’s new device, “ParkSys” now allows doctors to observe the accurate sizing of these symptoms. The company’s general manager and civil biomedical engineer Italo Bavestrello, explained that “assigning values to the symptoms of patients, register them to compare over time and generating statistics and protocols have been the essential contributions of ParkSys”. In the contrary to Infratec, the Backyard Brain team wants to bring science to the mass and arouse a new generation’s curiosity in Neuroscience and -technology. “Our mission is Neuroscience for everybody” says Tim Marzulla, co-founder of the company. The US entrepreneur and his team created a bio-amplifier which is able to recreate brain functions with images

on a monitor and sound in real-time. “Our inventions are cheap, usually about US$100. It’s affordable, but it’s a number’s business, so I have to sell a lot, to have a business which pays off.” In addition to this product, called “Spikerbox“, they invented as well the “world’s first commercially available cyborg”. With the “RoboRoach“, it is possible to wirelessly control the movement of a cockroach by microstimulation of the antenna nerves. Its creators revealed that “it was originally designed to test SpikerBox cockroaches. Both, human applications and the completely developed RoboRoach were only possible thanks to the US$ 40,000 and the visa that we got from Start-Up Chile”. Marzulla stated to I Love Chile, when he was asked about his motivation to provide this sort of knowledge to everybody, that “I wanted to be a neuroscientist and when I was in college, I knocked on the doors of professors like “Please let me use your lab, I want to do experiments and science”, and it actually took me 2 years to finally get into a university lab. I had to get experience in other labs but I wasn’t willing to put up with that, because I wanted to be a neuroscientist.” Written by Valentina Ostovary and Lea Wirz

Name that Species: National Geographic Launches Competition By Valentina Ostovary

In February, marine ecologist Enric Sala discovered a possible new species on the Desventuradas Islands off the coast of Chile. Now, National Geographic is inviting you to help name the colorful fish. While exploring the sea mounts near San Félix Island (part of the Desventuradas Islands), the National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Enric Sala, and his colleagues spotted the unknown species. “We got closer and tried to focus and zoom our video camera to get a closer look, but the spots darted into a hole and disappeared as soon as our submarine lights were on them,” wrote Sala in an email to National Geographic. Chile has a wide variety of flora and fauna and, regardless of whether its mammal, fish or insect, new species are discovered annually. National Geographic has decided that the naming of the 10cm-long fish should be done via crowd sourcing and made a contest out of the discovery, which could see you win a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands, famous for its diversity of animals and nature. The competition is open until August 26. Click here for details of the competition.

Crowd sourcing to name natural phenomena was used in the case of Pluto’s two smallest moons, formerly known as P4 and P5, and now as Kerberos and Styx. After nearly 500,000 votes were counted, in February 2013 the names of the moons were revealed.

Universidad de Chile to Kick Off Third Week of Apertura By Neil Zimmerman

Universidad de Chile will host Cobresal in the opening on Chile’s 2013 Apertura tournament, with Patricio Rubio likely to debut. SANTIAGO — After seeing the four Chilean teams participating midweek in the Copa Sudamericana progress to the next stage of the competition attention now returns to the league with a number of looking to maintain their unbeaten starts to the season while a number of others, most noticeably Unión Española, will be looking to break their duck. After progressing to the next stage of the Copa Sudamericana midweek with a 5-0 thrashing of Bolivian side Real Potosi, Universidad de Chile will be looking to carry that form into the opening match of round three of the Apertura season against Cobresal on Friday night. Having won their last seven outings against their opponents and not lost to them since 2009, manager Marco Antonio Figueroa will have high hopes of picking up his first win in the league with “La U” to add his to his midweek triumph.

have a good recent record against Wanderers having not lost to them since the 2010 Clausura season although three of those meetings have ended in draws so one would expect another tight affair once again.

Saturday’s action kicks off in the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo with the unbeaten Universidad Católica hosting the pointless Universidad de Concepción. Los cruzados come into this match off the back of consecutive league wins and midweek Copa Sudamericana success and having not lost to their opponents since 2007 they will be confident of making it three wins in a row and keeping the recently promoted Universidad de Concepción without a point after three rounds.

One of the surprise packets early on in this season have been Rangers de Talca who have won their opening two fixtures against Huachipato and Universidad de Chile. They will be looking to make it three in a row when they take on Everton in the Estadio Bicentenario Lucio Fariña in Saturday’s penultimate round. Everton will be full of confidence going into this match after their impressive win over Colo Colo last round and will be buoyed by the fact that they haven’t lost to their opponents since the 2008 Clausura season.

The weekend’s third match sees two of the league’s undefeated teams go head to head as Palestino host Santiago Wanderers in the Estadio La Cisterna. After both teams won their opening round fixtures, they both shared the spoils last weekend with Palestino drawing 1-all with Universidad de Chile whilst their opponents played out a scoreless draw with Audax Italiano. Palestino

Saturday’s final match takes place in the Estadio Bicentenario La Florida as the unbeaten Audax Italiano play host to the undefeated O’Higgins. These two teams met most recently in the Copa Chile group stages that was held in the break between the two seasons and honours were shared with a win apiece with the away team winning

on both occasions. Recent history between these two teams is pretty even with their last four Primera Division meetings resulting in two wins each and fifteen goals scored. Therefore a result is to be expected in this one and every possibility that the goal drought that has plagued this season might be broken. It is a rare thing to see Colo Colo sitting on the bottom of the Primera Division table but that’s just what we have after two rounds of this season. In Sunday’s opening match they will be looking to rectify that situation when they travel up north to take on Antofagasta at the Estadio Bicentenario Calvo y Bascuñán. For their part, los pumascome into this encounter off the back of a loss to O’Higgins and will face a Colo Colo side who will have gained some confidence from the progression midweek in the Copa Sudamericana and who have only lost to them once in their last nine meetings. Sunday’s next two matches kick off at 4pm with Unión La Calera hosting Ñublense at the Estadio Nicolás Chahuán whilst Unión Española take on Iquique in the Estadio Tierra de Campeones. Both Unión La Calera and Ñublense have only picked up a point so far this season although for the former they have only played one match after their last round fixture against Universidad de Concepción was washed out. Meanwhile, Ñublense drew their last match with Cobreloa after losing their opening match to Universidad Católica. The team from La Calera has won their last three encounters against their opponents and will be confident of repeating that trend. Unión Española’s title defense hasn’t exactly got off to the greatest of starts having lost their opening two matches of this season. During the week their misery was compounded as Patricio Rubio joined rivals Universidad de Chile. What will give them some hope is that they have a pretty good record against Iquique, having won six out of the last seven matches between the two teams and will be confident of getting their season back on track.

Another team that is without a point this season is Huachipato and they host Cobreloa in the final match of the round. Cobreloa have had a good start to the season and are unbeaten after two rounds plus progressed to the next stage of the Copa Sudamericana midweek with an impressive win away to Peñarol. They also have a good recent record against Huachipato having only lost once to their opponents in their last six outings and will be confident that they continue their good start.
