”Bali is Our Second Home” n 1993 Kiki Gram came to Bali for the first time and now they have visited Bali 15 times. She returns every year to Bali with her family because they love the atmosphere, the proud people, the nature, the tranquility, the food and the smiles. They have visited countries like China, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia in the Far East, but nothing is compared with Bali. “Maybe the beaches in some other places are better than Bali’s, and maybe some hotels are better than some other places. But at the end of the day, Bali is simply the best,” she said. During their vacation in Bali, she always chose the same hotel which is Mercure Sanur Resort. She said Mercure Sanur Resort was very memorable place to stay. The staffs are always smiling and helpful. They never made her upset. “The garden is very beautiful and

The atmosphere, the beaches, the people and the culture are all complete and perfect. “I feel very good and enjoy so that all burden in my mind disappeared when I am here,” said the Spanish woman. She plans to spend a vacation for a month here. Listed that there were several places that she already visited, such as Uluwatu, Tanah Lot, Jimbaran, Kuta, Ubud, and etc. Although already visited many places, but she admitted that she was still not satisfied and will continue to visit other places until her holiday’s time ended because according to her, Bali is very interesting. “One thing that might be a bit disturbing for me is about the problem of traffic congestion. Now every time I go to a tourism object here, I definitely need a lot of time because I must be stuck in traffic. But apart from that, I still feel very enjoyable here. In addition, I also feel safe because in every way that I passed there must be a police guard. They call Bali is their second home. During the years, they have learn some Balinese Culture and sometimes they came up to the several traditional ceremonies. That is very special moments for them. In developing tourism in Bali, she suggested to keep the local values and building styles. “Don’t change too much about the traditional culture. Everything is good here. But, there are a few things that I think could be better in Bali. I think there is too much rubbish on the street. It will better if this problem could be fixed up by the government,” she suggested. Bureau Head of Public Relations and Protocol I Putu Suardhika and Secretary of Bali Government Tourism Office IGA Ambari said that there were three things causing him to feel at home in Bali. Balinese people had a friendly attitude, good nature, fine attractions and very convincing tourist facilities. Ambassador Mahmud argued that his visit to Bali was for the second time. Previously, he had been to Bali to attend the inauguration of Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) in 2009. His presence at that time was a special face to face meeting with the Governor Made
Mangku Pastika to discuss about the investment opportunities for Brunei in Bali. Governor Made Mangku Pastika expressed his gratitude and appreciation of government and the people of Bali for his visit to Bali. Such honorary visit denoted a tangible manifestation of harmonious cooperation of Indonesia, especially Bali, with Brunei Darussalam. Governor hoped the cooperation between the two countries would get better and increase in the future. The matter, continued the Governor of Bali, would help in achieving the target of foreign tourist arrivals from 2.7 million today
to 5 million people in 2015. To that end, there would be many new things that should be built, such as new airport, new roads and new tourism facilities. The meeting of the two leaders was then ended by the exchange of souvenirs. His Excellency Ambassador Mahmud Bin Haji Saidin conferred a set of typical crystal stone of Brunei Darussalam, while Governor Made Mangku Pastika handed over one unit of Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue of bronze and Bali tourism information guide. S one of the favorite tourist destinations in Badung Regency, the Sangeh Ecotourism continues to re-organize itself into a better tourist destination. If in 2003 the destination relying on the cuteness of grey monkeys, sacredness of Bukit Sari Temple up to the fascination of nutmeg trees estimated to have been hundreds of years old specifically arranges its management and art shop. In 2005, the management expanded the parking lot and increased the forest area. Meanwhile, at the beginning of 2011 the Sangeh tourist object will be equipped with entrance gates. “At the beginning of 2011, the Sangeh tourist object will install entrance gates and the ticket counter. It is planned to build the gates designed in Balinese style and will be facing the east in front of the parking lot. Regarding to the fund, it is fully supported by the government, in this case, the Badung Government Tourism Office,” said Operation Head of the Sangeh Ecotourism Object, I Made Sumohon, recently. Furthermore, Sumohon had confidence that the making of entrance gates would make the Sangeh ecotourism object more interesting to visit. Similarly, the services extended to tourists became more focused. As a result, it would give better satisfaction to tourists. Then, regarding to the mischievous monkey, Sumohon said such condition had been reduced. Moreover, every inch of the area had
always been guarded by the officers. “In addition, food and health of the monkeys are well maintained all the times. The monkeys have become the main attraction, so that we have to handle them with care,” said Sumohon while adding that currently the Sangeh ecotourism object had a forest area of 14 hectares and 1 hectare of parking lot. Besides, Sumohon also convinced that next year, the construction work of bridge connecting Sangeh Village (Badung) with Cau Village, Belayu (Tabanan) would have been worked on. The bridge would not only have an economic impact on Badung and Tabanan regions, but also on the tourist visits to Sangeh ecotourism object. “Through the route, the Sangeh ecotourism object will become a
desirable package tour to Bedugul from Ubud,” he hoped. Comparable opinion was also revealed by the Head of Badung Government Tourism Office, Cok Darmawan. When performing socialization to the tourist object, he said, if the bridge could be implemented accordingly, it would also have a good impact on the tourist visits to Sangeh tourist object. Regarding to the tourists visitation to Sangeh, Sumohon admitted that there was an increase of 3.4 percent. If in the period of January to November 2009, there were 179,518 guests, then in the same month of this year reached 185,652 people. “Especially on the last Galungan festivity, most visitors were the local community,” he explained. Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, inaugurated the Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) 2010 in the luxurious tourism resort of Nusa Dua, Bali, not long ago. Such annual festival was organized by Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) where this year it entered the fifth time featuring the theme of Green Tourism. “The theme is intended to remind all parties on the importance of environmental conservation in the sustainability of tourism development of Bali in particular and Indonesia in general. The environment had become a global issue, especially in the tourism services,” affirmed Wacik.
M
inister Jero Wacik welcomed the endeavors made by PT BTDC by holding the Nusa Dua Fiesta event continuously every year. The event denoted an important measure in the efforts to increase the tourist visits to Bali, especially to Nusa Dua, where the region had been known as a world class eco-friendly tourist resort. “Implementation of the Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010 featuring the Green Tourism is very appropriate because it is in harmony with the theme of Tourism and Biodiversity established by the UNWTO in commemorating the World Tourism Day this year,” said Minister Jero Wacik. The festival lasted for five days (Oct 15-19) presenting quite a few extravagant cultural performances of Bali and other regions across Indonesia, sport tourism, competition (fun games), and exhibition of handicrafts from diverse regions in Indonesia, as well as hotels and tourism facilities existing in the area of Nusa Dua. An interesting occurrence in this years Nusa Dua Fiesta was related to the environmental awareness program with the implementation of green camp activities involving school children. It was graced by beach clean up
along the Nusa Dua Beach, planting of coral reefs, reforestation to create a ‘one man one tree’ as well as debriefing about ecotourism.
Such activities turned to become the initial capital and introduction to the environment since early age for future generation. They constituted the most important part that should be given the notion of environmental conservation efforts for the continuation of the planet. In addition, it was also held sporting activities including the Bali International Sports Week (BISW) putting 11 branches of sport into competition such as Marathon (5km, 10km and 21km), gateball, chess, bowling, wood ball, beach volley ball, billiard, cricket, golf, surfing and beach soccer as well
as culinary competitions followed by a number of international hotels in Bali with the involvement of the International Chef Association (INCA) of Bali Chapter. “Through the BSIW event
and this culinary competition, we do expect that Bali will not only become a leisure destination, but in the future Bali will also become a sporting destination aside from introducing Balinese cuisine to foreign countries through the event of Bali Culinary Challenge 2010 with the cooking of Balinese traditional cuisine in the rock salt sculpture exhibition and traditional live cooking of bebek betutu (roast duck)carried out by chefs under the Indonesian Chef Association (ICA). NDF 2010 centered at Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, was officially inaugurated by Min-

The event was also attended by Mustafa Abubakar, State Minister of State-Owned Enterprises commenced with cultural parade, while the Minister of Youth and Sports Andi Malarangeng opened the Bali International Sport Week (Oct 17) coinciding with the implementation of marathon race. PT BTDC as a company belonging to the StateOwned Enterprises (SOEs) has developed the tourism area of Nusa Dua. Formerly, it was a barren and remote area nestling on the southern tip of Bali Island. The region having a beautiful panoramic view with white sandy beach has become an integrated tourism area and is the first area obtaining the certification of Green Globe Award endorsed by the United Nations (UN). PT BTDC works with several investors to build Condotel in the form of special convention facilities on the seven-hectare land and has become world-class MICE facilities. (*)

Culinary Adventure to Lebih Beach D
o you remember the tranquil Lebih Beach tourist area? The beach belonging to the region of Gianyar Regency about 7 km east of Denpasar offers a wide variety of seafood treasures. The special menu is twisted satay and the distinctive grilled fish of Gianyar style. Moreover, if combined with the presence of plecing kangkung or hot-spiced water spinach, of course it will make your tongue swing steadily. The journey to or from Karangasem passing through the Jalan Bypass IB Mantra will becomes more meaningful when dropping at the beach area offering this specialty cuisine. Indeed, the tourist area of Lebih Beach was recently very crowded as thronged by many visitors.
Most of them were local people. Especially, on school holidays or public holidays the food vendors on the beach will look busier. “In terms of the beauty of the coast, perhaps it is similar to other beaches. However, what attracted me to come here is the culinary serving that offers typical delicacy,” said a tourist from Australia during his visit to the Lebih Beach recently. Such a fact made the Gianyar government open the eyes to create Lebih Beach into a new tourist attraction in the region. Arrangement continues to be carried out, so the beach really becomes an ideal tourist resort. On Sunday (Nov 28) together with local communities, government of Gianyar Regency rearranged this new tourist attraction by planting about 3,000 rare plants, such as santol, kepel fruit, mountain parasite, bignay, krikis wood, mahogany, bamboo, and many other trees widely used in religious ceremonies. The greening activity utilizing less productive dormant land was chaired in person by Gianyar Regent Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati. The activity began with the clean-up service on the coastal area of Lebih Beach by involving hundreds of students of elementary school, secondary school, senior high schools and university in the Gianyar Regency as well as civil servants in the circle of Gianyar Regency government. Chairman of the committee, I Made Suweta, said the arrangement of the Lebih area as an effort to make the Lebih Village into an enchanting tourist attraction of Punia out bound, jogging track, Kecak open stage, and camp activities for the scouts. “Lebih Beach potentially becomes a new tourist attraction. Moreover, this beach has been visited by many tourists because of offering typical seafood,” said Suweta. B N

Different New Year’s Dining Experience in Bali Many people associate the New Year with new hope. Therefore, everything is prepared to celebrate this festivity. In harmony with the passage of time, we have been approaching the year end of 2010. Companies will certainly be busy preparing their financial reports, new strategies or contract agreement. Then, how about your personal life, are you ready to celebrate?
I
f you are still confused where to go, think of Bali. Starting from now you can plan your yearend holiday whether choosing budget hotel, starred hotel or private villa. Or even decide on tranquil hideaway at remote villages. It is up to the theme of holiday you wish to have in Bali. At least, make yours the most momentous break throughout the year. Exploring the splendors of Bali will not be enough within two or three days. However, there is a simple way to do so. Simply delight in some unique features it offer. Dining experience, for instance, will enrich your perspective on the Balinese cuisines. Most hotels usually feature Balinese food in their New Year’s Eve Dinner. Some popular Balinese cuisines are such as roasted pig, lawar (minced meat with assorted fresh vegetables) and ayam betutu (roasted chicken rich in herb seasoning) and so forth. By and large, they are presented in a typical atmosphere with Balinese ornament of festive celebration. Added to the interesting nuance is that all waitresses or waiters serve in Balinese style costumes. It will seemingly not complete when luxuriating in the gala dinner without musical accompaniment. For this purpose, Bali has a wealth of cultural performances. However, the popular ones for this ambience are Kecak acappella, Ramayana ballet, and various beautiful dances. Cultural performance as this is not only staged for the yearend festivity but also for regular event at hotel and restaurants outside hotel. When the West has Kenny G saxophone instrumental, Balinese will have a melancholic rindik. It is a Balinese bamboo music consisting of a set of xylophones with different lengths. This soft and soothing music is habitually played to welcome guests at hotel lobby or restaurant. Enjoying the mouth-watering food and watching Balinese cultural show are amazing fusion to enhance the impression of your dining experience. For the New Year, Bali as a great oasis of entertainments and cuisines also offer the combination of local, national and international food. Hotels and restaurants call it East Meets West theme. So, visitors are unnecessary to feel worry if would like to find out favorite delicacies on this island. Other than at hotel restaurants, visitors have alternative to enjoy the last night of 2010 in diversity of delicious food at restaurants outside hotels. Or if you want to celebrate the moment with local people, you can visit and taste the food splendor of night markets close to your hotel. However, if you wish to enjoy a special private dinner it would be better for you to book a villa along with the dinner. This will enable you to get a better privacy with family,
relatives or even the beloved one. As hotels, villa usually imposes a peak season’s surcharge during the period of New Year to your room rate. Last but not least, it is advisable that you make prior reservation for the room along with the gala dinner as hotels generally provide limited seats for the function. Additionally, cross check as well to the hotel at what time the function starts and make sure you arrive at the hotel before the dinner time. President SBY Admires the Greatness of Besakih Temple resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) paid his first visit to Besakih Temple on Friday (Dec 10) afternoon since he ruled the roost in 2004. The President was amazed by the greatness and sacredness of the biggest temple in Bali. On that occasion, the President asked the Hindu officials who was also accompanying the visit to worship and say prayers for the security and prosperity of Bali and the Indonesia’s archipelago. SBY and his entourage had to have a promenade and see a number of temple’s buildings in the Penataran Agung complex. The President was provided with a description by one of the temple priest in Besakih, Gusti Mangku Jana, accompanied by other priests as well as the Head of Besakih customary village I Wayan Gunatra. After the Hindu officials said prayers, Yudhoyono also prayed in order their prayers could be answered and God bestowed safety for Bali and the archipelago as well as peace and prosperity for the entire subject. “This temple is so grandiose and sacred. Prayers of those worshipping solemnly here would be certainly answered,” the president observed. SBY was once sitting in one of the temple buildings along with other officials. At that time, apart from listening to the explanation on the temple’s history, the President was also given a book telling about the history of Besakih Temple. On the contrary, the President handed over an aid worth IDR 100 million for the temple maintenance. The visit of SBY to the temple was for the very first time. It was made on the last day of his working visit after over a week in Bali. Wearing a white headdress affixed with a red hibiscus, reddish long-sleeved shirt with vertical stripes and dark trousers fitted with yellow shawl, Yudhoyono was accompanied by First Lady Mrs. Ani Yudhoyono. Likewise,

the First Lady wore a small shawl on waist. She was accompanied by the entourage of ministers such as Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik, Minister of Youth and Sports Andi Malarangeng, Secretary of State Sudi Silalahi, Governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika, former Governor Dewa Made Beratha, Regent of Karangasem I Wayan Geredeg and a number of other officials. Presidential entourage entered the temple through the main split gates after passing through 51 steps. The rain showering Besakih at that time did not discourage him. But, he should be protected by umbrella. Meanwhile, hundreds of devotees apparently did not think if the President would pay a visit to the temple area of Penataran Agung. Quite a few devotees were forced to delay the prayers and even took a picture with the President. As shown, a devotee named Putu Tria from Buleleng was desperate to break through the entourage of President escorted by the Secret Service. B N (BTN/kmb)

INTENTION of the Badung Regency government to develop tourism sector in the Northern Badung in the form of agro or rural tourism was positively welcomed by the community of Carangsari Village. Even, long before the idea came up, the village with 7 customary hamlets and 9 administrative hamlets have organized themselves. Evidently, the village that has no tourist attraction managed to draw 3000-5000 foreign tourists per month.

.B. Nama Rupa, Chairman of the tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) of Carangsari Village said the village located about 35 km north of Denpasar really did not have a tourist attraction. However, due to commitment of local community to preserve the natural and cultural environment and driven by social foundation named A True Balinese Experience (ATBE), it was then established a rafting business. Its tourist attraction did not only include the rafting itself, but it was also expanded by providing other intriguing optional tours such as cycling, jungle trekking, village trekking and attraction of the native Sumatra elephant as conservation of the central government. “Out of the existing tourist activities, the elephant attraction is the most demanding among the tourists,” he explained. Additionally, he said the name of the foundation was inspired by the comments of tourists feeling a truly experience of Bali. On that account, all tourist attractions were offering eco-friendly programs upholding the movement of back to village. For example, committing conservation,
planting trees from the upstream to downstream like what had been done on the Bebeni Peak up to the Mangrove Forest in Benoa. Likewise, the movement also motivated people to visit the homes of local residents. Gusde, as he familiarly addressed, then gave an example that jungle trekking activities were always filled with tree plantings with tagline ‘one guest one tree.’ Later, the tree was given a name label of who planted it. As a result, all tourists were very happy. Gusde, who is also the Operations Manager of ATBE, added that cycling activity invited visitors to see the homes of villagers continued by giving donations to the owner of the house. This activity was intended to motivate the local population to keep their house clean and healthy. On average, Gusde added, guests paying a visit to the Carangsari Village spent a whole day. In the morning, they rode a bike, then rafting up to ride an elephant. Most tourists were from Australia and then followed by European, Asian and domestic tourists. Domestic tourists preferred to carry out outbound or

Setting up the Pokdarwis Since many local communities get involved in tourism sector, the Badung Government Tourism Office then suggested establishing a tourism awareness group (Pokdarwis) as an organization that could provide people with an understanding about tourism. Moreover, it received a
great support from the owner and management of ATBE to make Carangsari as a tourism village, so the existence of Pokdarwis was considered very important. According to Gusde, the organization was founded last year with a total membership of 35 people. Meanwhile, the Section Head of Guidance Services in the Badung Government Tourism Office, I Made
Astawa, and Head of Community Guidance of Bali Government Tourism Office, Ni Ketut Nuryati, when giving guidance and evaluation to the Pokdarwis of Carangsari Village not long ago compactly said that all group members were involved directly as a tourism worker. On that account, it was not required to provide more sessions of education and training. BTN

Head of Badung Government Tourism Office, Cok Raka Darmawan, responded positively the award achieved by Kuta Karnival (KK) from the Indonesian Tourism and Travel Award (ITTA). Besides, the arts and flagship program of Kuta Karnival could be presented in better quality,” said Cok Darmawan. Taman Ayun Temple ‘Taman Ayun’ means beautiful garden, located in the village of Mengwi, 18 km west of Denpasar. It is indeed one of Bali’s most pic-
turesque temples. The king of Mengwi, I Gusti Agung Anom, built its stately proportioned courtyards and large surrounding moat in the year 1634. Containing both the Royal family ancestral shrines and the storied MERU shrines to the major deities, Taman Ayun became the main temple for the ancient kingdom of Mengwi. BTN

To reach this object by motor vehicle from Denpasar, go westwards more or less 10 km then turn south, or to the north from Kuta following Raya Seminyak Street. Peti Tenget temple was built in the 15th century and it used to be a plot of extraordinary holy (Tenget) land, bush growth and dwelled by the I Bhuta Ijo demon that was trusted by Holy priest, Dang Hyang Nirartha to safeguard his holy box. The story told that when the priest stayed at south port (now Uluwatu), a man from Kerobokan village came asking the priest for help. He wished to cultivate the plot of land without feeling fear. The priest suggested that the people build a temple dedicated to god ‘Labuhan Masceti’ and a single closed shrine (Pagedongan) for Bhuta Ijo as a place to safeguard the priest’s box (Peti). From that time on, the temple was named Peti Tenget Temple.

Uluwatu Temple At the westernmost tip of Bukit Peninsula, this is one of Bali’s nine ‘directional’ Kayangan Jagat temples. The location is dramatic, perched on the edge of a high cliff with a picturesque sunset view. The temple was first used for worship by the 11th century holy priest, Empu Kuturan, who came to Bali to bring religious law and to form Desa Adat (traditional villages). The area where spectacular sunsets can be viewed is filled with the scent of frangipani blossoms and is also the home of friendly monkeys.

Kumbasari Market sells costume and clothing items at prices relatively cheaper than clothing items sold at the shops in Gajah Mada Street which are mostly owned by citizens of Chinese clan. Kumbasari Market was previously called Peken Payuk (pot market); it sold such items as gerabah (jar like pot), cobek (clay plates), paso (clay buckets), caratan (clay water jug), jeding (clay barrel), penyantokan (mixer from clay), coblong (clay cup),
kekeb (rice cover) and others. All of these items are used as kitchenware and for ceremony. Since this market was most popular as a place to sell payuk/ pot, hence Kumbasari Market in the past was referred to as Peken Payuk or pot market. The location of Denpasar Market is encircled by shops along the street of Gajah Mada. On the right side there is Sulawesi Street which is famous for textiles. he matter was revealed by the Indonesian ambassador to Australia, Primo Ali Julianto, to reporters of Bali Travel News, Gde Palgunadi, who participated in the Bilateral Indonesian Inter-Media Dialogue in Canberra on Monday (Nov 6). There were several reasons revealed, namely the long history of Australians in relationship to the Balinese, geographic proximity and
price of the package tours offered by the perpetrators of Indonesian tourism. “So far, there is no problem in applying for a visa. Everything has run smoothly and flourishingly,” said Primo, a career diplomat who had a wealth of experience in the service in Brazil, Venezuela and New Zealand. From a few conversations of Bali Post with some Australian journalists, the
coverage about Indonesia (especially Bali) did not only involve in tourism but also other things. Similarly, it also concerned with the controversial penalty of Schapelle Corby and the Bali Nine. Related to this matter, the Ambassador Primo said that the focus was only on the implementation of the death penalty. Most went against the death penalty, while some others supported the penalty. However, added Primo, the Australian public was aware that it was the full jurisdiction of Indonesia. In general, the current relationship of Australia-the Indonesia was intimate and lovingly. For that purpose, Primo invited all components outside the

ura Gunung Kawi Sebatu is in Tampaksiring district that exists from Ubud to the north in 10 Kms. It is not very large , but, it is a quiet temple which surroundings were enclosed by the forest. There is a fountain where the clear water called “Holy fountain” begins to spring in the temple. Bad king Maya Denawa was defeated by the army of Dewa Indra because of the fight that happened in Tampaksiring village. Then, bad king Maya Denawa ran away to Subatu village on the west side of Tampaksiring village. All villagers were frighten because of the appearance of Bad king Maya Denawa, and ran away from the village at that time. God Vishnu saw confusion of people in Sebatu village. People who ran away from this village were neither the eaten one nor the drinking water, and were embarrassed very much. Then, Vishnu gave the spring water for them. And, the souls including Vishnu challenged Maya Denawa to a fight. The bad king Maya Denawa to whom the forces had already failed was driven to Petanu river, and killed. The villagers built a small shrine in the place for the savior Vishnu. It is said that this is the starting point of Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu. The temple is like the park, and

Tabanan is the name of one district and town in Bali. Though Tabanan is not really a tourist town there are still some interesting aspects to it. Back in 1906 the Balinese and Dutch were fighting over control of the island. One of the more positive historical points of interest is the Subak Museum, located close to the main bypass road. While the museum itself is nothing special, it documents one of the most important social/economic/cultural institutions in Bali, the Subak. Dating back to 600AD, Bali has been using a system of un-
mechanized rice cultivation and water management. Bali’s ability to produce an endless supply of rice year round is central to its history. The Subak controls management of the watercourses, stretching all the way to the highland lakes. A farmer cannot simply flood all his fields at the same time, or divert a main stream to access more water. The system is intricate and the Subak museum is the place where it’s officially documented. Yeh Gangga, Lalang Linggah and Balian to the west are beach environments around the area. Highlights of the area close to Tabanan include Taman Kupu Kupu (Butterfly Park) in Wanasari and Yeh Panas hot springs. Pura Tanah Lot is a 15-minute drive South from Tabanan. Tanah Lot Tanah Lot, one of the most popular places of interest in Bali, is located on the coast of West Bali, at the village of Beraban in the Tabanan Regency. It is also called Tanah Let, which means ancient land, and also Tanah Lod, which mean the land to the south. The temple Pura Tanah Lot, simple in its construction, is dramatic in its ocean-front location and is one of the main temples in the worship of Balinese gods. Tanah Lot has a long history in the world of tourism. The temple itself is built on a small promontory, which is only accessible at low tide. During high water the rock takes on the appearance of a large boat at sea, such is its shape. Poisonous snakes live in the nearby caves to ‘guard’the temple and contribute to the temple’s dangerous reputation. Sunset is the best time to visit Tanah lot, when the golden red skies frame the temple and waves crash into the rocks. It is advisable to avoid the tourist crush here, as it can be severe. BTN

but some must be detained in Indonesia. “It is no longer a bilateral but also regional issue,” said Primo while mentioning that Timor Leste also thought about the problem. In the official visit of Prime Minister Julia Gillard to Jakarta and met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono some time ago, the two issues were also discussed aside from the handling of terrorism act that had become a global issue. So far, the position of trade business between the two countries was relatively balanced. Commodities imported from Australia consisted of gold, crude oil and other mining products. BTN
Klungkung, the Smallest Regency on the Island
KLUNGKUNG Ancient Kingdoms
This is the smallest regency in Bali. It covers only 121 square kilometers and includes three islands, Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan. Despite its size, its influence on Balinese culture has been powerful. It was here, in the shadow of the holy volcano Agung, that the princes and priests of Majapahit gathered in 1343 to continue the kingdom by setting up ‘Keraton’ in Samprangan, but within a couple of generations, they moved to Gelgel and then to Klungkung, in 1710. In the 16th century the Gods smiled on Gelgel when Dalem Baturenggong reached an impressive political and cultural achievement to earn his ‘golden age’ Kertha Gosa, which is situated in the central town of Semarapura, was the place for administration and traditional justice in the pre-colonial times by a council consisting of the great king and his priests. Next to the Kertha Gosa is Taman Gili, known as a Floating House (Bale Kambang) which was the King’s Guard’s headquarters. These two buildings are decorated with
Kamasan Traditional Paintings. A colonial building, located next to these two buildings, is Semarajaya Museum, collecting some handicraft of Klungkung, pre-historic and historic articles especially those used in the period of Klungkung’s heroic battle. In the southern part of the museum area, there stands the main gate of Semarapura Palace ‘Pemedal Agung’. The newest sight in Semarapura Town is Patung Kandapat Sari, situated at the main junction of Semarapura town. Some people consider this statue as the landmark of Klungkung Regency. Next to this landmark stands an historical monument known as Monument of Klungkung Heroic Battle. This monument is a cenotaph reminiscent of an event that once took place on April 28, 1908. It is well known as ‘Puputan’, a counter-defence of The Great King of Klungkung against the Dutch soldiers. Moving south of Semarapura town along the main road, one will arrive at the ‘under construction’ area of Tourism Villages, home of traditional Painting, Kamasan Village and Bali’s original capital, Gelgel. river, called Kumbasari Market because the local society will feel that their shopping experience would be incomplete without going to the Kumbasari Market, especially for the Balinese who want to buy their ceremonial items.
Denpasar Traditional Market is progressively strengthening the identity of Denpasar’s economic center which is open 24 hours and is never silent or empty of visitors.
At traditional market, you will find transactions taking place between buyers and merchants with multifarious merchandise to satisfy life’s daily needs such as kitchen supplies, appliances required for Hindu ritual, fruits and tra-

Bali Struggle Monument-Bajra Sandhi This monument is erected in the middle of Denpasar civic center, Renon. It is a symbol of Bali people’s struggle to gain independence after the Dutch Colonials retreated from this country. This monument immortalizes the soul and spirit of Bali people’s struggle. It also aims to take care of and develop and preserve the Balinese culture for future generations. BTN
he matter was revealed by the Indonesian ambassador to Australia, Primo Ali Julianto, to reporters of Bali Travel News, Gde Palgunadi, who participated in the Bilateral Indonesian Inter-Media Dialogue in Canberra on Monday (Nov 6).

BTN

“Simpatik” Ads HOTEL, VILLAS & BUNGALOW

On that account, it was not required to provide more sessions of education and training. BTN

By doing so, you will not miss the momentous moment to enjoy the yearend feast under typical Balinese atmosphere. Hopefully, you could have an impressive dining (BTN/punia) experience on the Paradise Island! B N

Likewise,
P
the First Lady wore a small shawl on waist.

NDF 2010 centered at Peninsula Island, Nusa Dua, was officially inaugurated by Min-
ister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik. (*)
