OVERNMENT of Badung Regency will restore the coral reefs growing along the coastal regions in Badung until 2014. Even, for recovering the life of marine biota of Badung, it had been prepared a budget worth IDR 1 billion.

It denoted the funding of central government resourcing from international aid agencies and regional budget. The budget itself would be disbursed in stages each year. Based on the data of government, the current length of coastline in the Southern Bali reached 82 kilometers. Badra also said that Badung Government was very committed to the recovery of damaged coral reefs as the activities proposed in the Nusa Dua Fiesta 2010 by Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC). Some beaches in Badung Regency should be restored due to damaged condition caused by human. “The existence of coral reef has an important meaning in the effort to preserve the marine environment,” he said. In the meantime, coral reefs also had an important role as a buffer against the erosion and habitat of various fishes so that later on fishermen would be easier to catch fish and unnecessary to sail too far. Additionally, coral reefs posed a leading producer of white sand to prevent abrasion. “Please do not allow people to

USA DUA tourist resort is usually taken advantage as destination to unwind and relax by tourists, but on Sunday (Oct 17) the atmosphere was different, lively, intense and enthusiastic. Thousands of people ran along the clean pavement of Nusa Dua. Of course, they were not just enjoying their holiday, but taking part in the marathon race in a series of the Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) 2010. It was expected that such a sporting event could also boost Bali as a world tourism destination. Bali International Sport Week (BISW) organizing the run race deliberately involved thousands of runners from home and abroad. The event took the route within the area of Nusa Dua. It competed three categories namely the 21 K, 10 K and 5K run. The 21 K run was released in person by the Deputy Ministry of Youth and Sport Empowerment, James Tangkudung, the 10 K run by Assistant II of Bali Province Ketut Wija, while the 5 K run was released by the Regent of Badung Anak Agung Gde Agung. On that occasion were also present the Managing Director of Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) Made Mandra, Director of Operations IGK Purnaya, and Chairman of BISW I Gusti Alit Putra. The culinary contest entitled Bebek Betutu or Balinese grilled chicken with herb seasoning became an intriguing spectacle and a medium to learn cooking fresh food of typical Balinese.

N the competition powered by the Indonesia Chef Association (ICA), the participants directly demonstrated the ingredients and spices in use. They were ranging from how to prepare chicken, Balinese spices until how to cook it. By doing so, visitors could observe in person about the measures in preparing the bebek betutu delicacy. and it was also c uniquely cooked by means of charcoal and rice husk. “It aims to demonstrate to tourists that the traditional cooking method can compete against the taste of national and international food provided that the traditional menu should be managed hygienically,” said the Central Caretaker of ICA, Margaretta, in the midst of the competition. According to Margaretta, her party deliberately put the bebek betutu into the competition in order it could have typical characteristic in the NDF event. “This culinary competition of bebek betutu is indeed specially intended for NDF, while other dishes have been introduced in other activities, such as roasted suckling pig in the Sanur Village Festival,” she explained.

NDF Art Parade Conveys Environmental Messages P

ROCESSION of Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) did not only show off the work of pure art, but also tended to emphasize on moral, social and environmental messages. In accordance with the theme Green Parade, the art parade engaging the artists of the hotels and art troupes in the area of Nusa Dua displayed attractive works of art in turn. Choreography, costumes to the musical accompaniment were thoroughly prepared.

They were getting more interesting because each participant did not only present selected dancers, but their team was also supported by property such as ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon), artificial trees, up to various types of Hindu ritual paraphernalia in Bali. Of course, such elements supported the art composition in visualizing the theme to spectators in order to love the environment. Each participant had the opportunity to show off its performance in front of the honorary stage attended by Minister of Culture and tourism Jero Wacik, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Mustrafa Abubakar, former Minister of Culture and Tourism Gde Ardika, Regent of Badung AA Gde Agung and other officials. Managing Director of BTDC, I Made Mandra, said the event was held as an effort to maintain the tourism image of Bali and Indonesia. Feeding Squirrel Named the Best Photograph NUSA DUA as a luxurious tourist resort in Bali turned out to have tremendous appeal. Do you want a proof? Simply have a look at the photograph contest held in the series

of Nusa Dua Fiesta (NDF) 2010. A lot of uniqueness remained to be hidden in this tourist resort. They were ranging from natural beauty, beaches, water sports, activities of seaweed farmers, sea birds, community activities on the beach, local animals up to clean-up the environment and so forth. From the photograph contest, 63 participants were recorded to present their best photographs whose number reaching 229 pieces. Such amount increased from 31 participants last year. They perfectly immortalized a variety of objects around Nusa Dua area. Participants were from the circle of students of photography and pupils. “These participants were from various photography community, general public, students and pupils. It is remarkably encouraging,” said the jury panel of the photograph contest in the series of NDF 2010, IB Putra Adnyana who is familiarly addressed Gustra. UTHOR of the book Usada Bali (Balinese Traditional Healing), the late Prof. IGN Nala, once said that to help the healing, the Ayurvedic healers usually provided natural herbal medicine having few side effects. Almost all plants existing around us could be eaten, they were medicine. On that account, all plants having efficacy for healing were necessary to be inventoried and developed. In the meantime, the Dean of Faculty of Health Science, Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), I Nyoman Prastika, said that based Taru Premana palmmanuscript there were a number of beneficial herbs having the efficacy to cure diseases. Parts of those plants taken advantage consisted of its leaf, flower, fruit, bark or roots. Each herb had different quality such as cool, warm and mild. Then, what kinds of plant could be used to cure diseases? Prastika said that virtually all ed-

ible plants by animals could be eaten by humans. Whether the herbs had medicinal quality, they could be observed from the color of their flowers and flavor as mentioned above. Similarly, the plants frequently used for spices in the cooking contained drug efficacy. Red ginger for example, was good to increase warmth of the body as well as to stimulate or maintain immunity. If red ginger added with the flowers of carambola, bark of tamarind and kalmegh leaves, they could be used to accelerate breathing and relieve cough. Meanwhile, to break up kidney stones and cure colic, people could also use herbal medicine. Its ingredients consisted of roots of reed, roots of palm tree, root of areca nut tree and added with palm sugar. All materials were thoroughly boiled. Afterward, its decoction water was drunk in the morning and afternoon.

Herbal remedies could also cope with cardiac palpitations. Its ingredients comprised the soy beans, green beans, ginger, cumin, fennel, bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) leaf, coriander and pulasari (Alyxia

One of them was Lontar Usada Tiwang. This manuscript described about various types of diseases along with their treatments. Tiwang conveyed numerous symptoms in the form of disorder on the function of organ. There were several types of tiwang presented in the manu-

scripts such as tiwang utara, tiwang tojos, tiwang wedul, tiwang pemali pepasangan, tiwang wong, and tiwang rajasa. Prastika added that tiwang pemali pepasangan had symptoms like prickling pain in the chest and on the back. Being no resistant to the pain, the sufferers often groaned. CREMATION ceremony to the body of the King Peliatan IX, Ida I Dewa Agung Peliatan, 71, will be held by the family of Peliatan Royal Palace, Ubud, on Anggare Gumbreg or the upcoming Tuesday (Nov 2). The King Peliatan IX, Ida I Dewa Agung Peliatan, passed away on August 21. His body is currently being lain down at the funeral home of Peliatan Grand Palace. The deceased posing a descendant of the King Peliatan I, Ida I Dewa Agung Made, denoting the son of the couple (late) Ida Tjokorda Gde Rai and (late) AA Istri Mas, was enthroned as the King Peliatan IX on June 5, 2001. In the meantime, the bathing ritual for him had been performed on Thursday (Oct 7) and coupled with the appointment ritual of Tjokorda Gde Putra Nindia as the successor of the new King Peliatan IX. This cremation ceremony will be recorded in the history because it uses eleven-tiered Bade (medium of body bearer) with the height reaching 25.5 meters. Turtle Hatchlings Release on Kramat Beach

Bangli, the Only non-Coastal Regency on the Island Bangli, capital town of the regional government of Bangli, which is located precisely in the central part of Bali province, is the only one of the nine regencies in Bali that has no coastal areas. The mountainous area with its beautiful valleys and steep slopes give this northern part of the region its unique side. Mount Abang, the highest peak is about 2.152 meters above sea level. Kintamani, a worldwide renowned tourism resort is located in this northern part. In the southern part of this region, about 100 meters above sea level stretches a broad plain of mostly rice fields. Its geographic background shows its neighboring regions are the regional government of Buleleng in the north,

Klungkung and Karangasem in the east, Gianyar and Klungkung in the south and Badung and Gianyar to the west. Kehen Temple Pura Kehen is one of the most ancient temples in Bali. It is here that

three old bronze manuscripts were housed. The people around the village worship this temple. The ceremony takes place on Rabu Kliwon Shinta where Ngusabha ceremony is held once in every three-year period, which falls on Purnama Kelima around November. This temple is located on the southern slope of Bangli hill, about two kilometers from the town. It is really an historical temple worth visiting. It has a long flight of steps pointing down to the south. It can be reached by any mode of transport through a well kept shafted road, or a short walk from Bangli cultural hall (Sasana Budaya Bangli).

Clean River Becomes a Desire of City Dwellers HAVING a clean and evergreen city definitely becomes a desire of every single city dweller. However, to make it happen is required a hard work and great concern of all parties. In order to accomplish such an ideal aspiration, the Denpasar Environment Agency continued to conduct various programs. One of them was by taking the community of Ubung Kaja, right the hamlet of Tegal Kori Kaja and Tegal Kori Kangin to perform a greening activity at the riverside and clean up services en masse. HIS matter was conveyed by the Head of Denpasar Environment Agency AA. Bagus Sudharsana when he was met in the midst of clean-up service activity at the hamlet of Tegal Kori, Sunday (Oct 10). Furthermore, Sudharsana added that such an activity was one of the ac-

tivities committed by the Denpasar Municipality to realize the green and clean river. It was carried out because the river was the source of raw water in Denpasar. He also explained why his party chose the river as the object of sanitation movement at that time because Denpasar located at the downstream and highly vulnerable to flooding. So, to overcome the problems, the rivers passing through Denpasar City should be thoroughly clean and green. “We start first the activity from Tegal Kori and later on the clean-up and greening will be continued to other riversides,” explained Sudharsana. In the recent greening, Sudharsana claimed to plant 700 trees of different species and they particularly related to the demands for

Tabanan is the name of one district and town in Bali. Though Tabanan is not really a tourist town there are still some interesting aspects to it. Back in 1906 the Balinese and Dutch were fighting over control of the island. One of the more positive historical points of interest is the Subak Museum, located close to the main bypass road. While the museum itself is nothing special, it documents one of the most important social/economic/cultural institutions in Bali, the Subak. Dating back to 600AD, Bali has been using a system of un-

mechanized rice cultivation and water management. Bali’s ability to produce an endless supply of rice year round is central to its history. The Subak controls management of the watercourses, stretching all the way to the highland lakes. A farmer cannot simply flood all his fields at the same time, or divert a main stream to access more water. The system is intricate and the Subak museum is the place where it’s officially documented. Yeh Gangga, Lalang Linggah and Balian to the west are beach environments around the area. Highlights of the area close to Tabanan include Taman Kupu Kupu (Butterfly Park) in Wanasari and Yeh Panas hot springs. Pura Tanah Lot is a 15-minute drive South from Tabanan. Tanah Lot Tanah Lot, one of the most popular places of interest in Bali, is located on the coast of West Bali, at the village of Beraban in the Tabanan Regency. It is also called Tanah Let, which means ancient land, and also Tanah Lod, which mean the land to the south. The temple Pura Tanah Lot, simple in its construction, is dramatic in its ocean-front location and is one of the main temples in the worship of Balinese gods. Tanah Lot has a long history in the world of tourism. The temple itself is built on a small promontory, which is only accessible at low tide. During high water the rock takes on the appearance of a large boat at sea, such is its shape. Poisonous snakes live in the nearby caves to ‘guard’the temple and contribute to the temple’s dangerous reputation. Sunset is the best time to visit Tanah lot, when the golden red skies frame the temple and waves crash into the rocks. It is advisable to avoid the tourist crush here, as it can be severe. Klungkung, the Smallest Regency on the Island

KLUNGKUNG Ancient Kingdoms

This is the smallest regency in Bali. It covers only 121 square kilometers and includes three islands, Nusa Penida, Lembongan and Ceningan. Despite its size, its influence on Balinese culture has been powerful. It was here, in the shadow of the holy volcano Agung, that the princes and priests of Majapahit gathered in 1343 to continue the kingdom by setting up ‘Keraton’ in Samprangan, but within a couple of generations, they moved to Gelgel and then to Klungkung, in 1710. In the 16th century the Gods smiled on Gelgel when Dalem Baturenggong reached an impressive political and cultural achievement to earn his ‘golden age’ Kertha Gosa, which is situated in the central town of Semarapura, was the place for administration and traditional justice in the pre-colonial times by a council consisting of the great king and his priests. Next to the Kertha Gosa is Taman Gili, known as a Floating House (Bale Kambang) which was the King’s Guard’s headquarters. These two buildings are decorated with

A colonial building, located next to these two buildings, is Semarajaya Museum, collecting some handicraft of Klungkung, pre-historic and historic articles especially those used in the period of Klungkung’s heroic battle. In the southern part of the museum area, there stands the main gate of Semarapura Palace ‘Pemedal Agung’. The newest sight in Semarapura Town is Patung Kandapat Sari, situated at the main junction of Semarapura town. Some people consider this statue as the landmark of Klungkung Regency. Next to this landmark stands an historical monument known as Monument of Klungkung Heroic Battle. This monument is a cenotaph reminiscent of an event that once took place on April 28, 1908. It is well known as ‘Puputan’, a counter-defence of The Great King of Klungkung against the Dutch soldiers. Moving south of Semarapura town along the main road, one will arrive at the ‘under construction’ area of Tourism Villages, home of traditional Painting, Kamasan Village and Bali’s original capital, Gelgel.
