EDITORS LETTER Welcome to the very first issue of IMAGE 34. This debut Issue. I decided to call it the Ambition Issue for many reasons. One reason for this is because I want to crack the fashion industry. I want to become a successful fashion photographer. So I thought about how I could put my passion for fashion into practice. Then one day it hit me. Why donâ€&#x;t I create my own magazine. So Image 34 was born. I have been fortunate enough to work with other very headstrong individuals who also want to crack the industry in their desired fields. A lot of whom feature in this issue. From the amazing videographer Sam Milletti to the wonderful singer and our cover star Stephanie Hargreaves. All of which have a real passion like mine to strive forward for the things we love to create. So The Ambition Issue is full of ambitious creative individuals in all their forms and together we hope we can crack the industry. Please enjoy the first issue and I hope you come back for the next. Jess Mills North London hailing electronic singer/songwriter Jess Mills is hotly tipped by many to become one of 2012′s biggest breakthrough acts and earlier this week, LozzaMusic got a chance to catch up with the Island Records signee to dig deeper into her music as it is today, influences, future plans and advice for upcoming artists trying to make a name for themselves. Here is what she had to say!
Words By Lozza Music
For those who are reading this and don’t know who Jess Mills is, give us a brief introduction to yourself and your music. I am Jess Mills. I am a singer and also a songwriter. I write all my own material and to describe my sound in the loosest form, I make electronic music but in terms of what I‟m writing for this album, I guess the sound oscillates between the more pacey adrenaline moments of electronic music – stuff that could be played in a club – down to stuff which is more spacious and downtempo and is a bit more immersive.
How has signing to a major label so early on in your career affected your music and is it something you would recommend? Maybe for some people, it does happen too soon but for me, I was in a perfect place myself to write and deliver an album so no, it didn‟t feel too soon. I have to say, my experience so far working with the label has been incredible. They‟ve just really been amazing in every way; really supported me and invested a lot of belief in what it is that I want to create. What advice would you give to upcoming artists trying to get their music heard? I think there‟s so many formats now for you people to discover you
Essentially, I think what‟s really important if you‟re an up and coming talent is to really focus on what you feel your strengths are – Is your strength songwriting or is it performing? Is it vocals, is it dance, is it rapping, is it that you can do all of those at once, is it the fact that you‟re a producer as well as a singer? – and really to just hone the part of your craft that you feel is your exceptional talent and try and cultivate that. You have to also be prepared to be pretty dogged about it as well, especially in all the adversity that comes up when you‟re trying to make it. You have to have quite a steely sense of belief and work ethic to get to the point where greater opportunities will open up to you.
Your music seems to draw influence from a lot of places; who have you listened to growing up and how has your taste developed? I guess I first got introduced to house music when I was really quite little because my older brother was a house DJ. As a teenager though, I tended to be really into the UK garage scene at that time, in terms of the stuff I was going out to party to. But also in my own time, I was listening to a lot more immersive kind of music; from Radiohead to The Smiths to The Cure, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, to even Nirvana so you know, I guess it was all juxtaposed to everything! Also bands like Massive Attack and Portishead were massively inspirational for me. There‟s a big ol‟ medley of music in there, forming my whole writing process!
but I think, no matter what your situation, whether you‟re in a deal or making music independently, if something‟s really really good, it has its way of rising to the top. It just has its way of cutting through the rest. Essentially, I think what‟s really important if you‟re an up and coming talent is to really focus on what you feel your strengths are – Is your strength song writing or is it performing? Is it vocals, is it dance, is it rapping, is it that you can do all of those at once, is it the fact that you‟re a producer as well as a singer? – and really to just hone the part of your craft that you feel is your exceptional talent and try and cultivate that. You have to also be prepared to be pretty dogged about it as well, especially in all the
adversity that comes up when you‟re trying to make it. You have to have quite a steely sense of belief and work ethic to get to the point where greater opportunities will open up to you. What is the deepest song you have ever written? There‟s a couple of songs; there‟s a song called See-Saw that is another track I did with James Breakage and I performed it when I did my first sold out headline show in London, just before Christmas, which would‟ve been the first time anyone heard that song. The opening line says could you ever find light at the bottom of the ocean, where the sun won’t shine? and it‟s about really having to dig as deep as you possibly can
within yourself, in the moments where you can only see darkness but just believing the light will come. So that‟s See-Saw but I guess maybe Silent Space too which is also up on YouTube – there‟s a little viral video just for that. That song was about a lot of the personal payment people go through in their own hearts and own minds that goes completely unsaid and quite often, it‟s what people don‟t say that really tells the full story. What can we expect from your debut album? You‟ve heard 4 pieces of music from me in the past year: there was Fighting Fire with Breakage, there was Vultures, Live What I Die For and now Pixelated People. I guess between those 4 tracks, they mark out the
benchmark for the sound quite well. There‟ll also be some more stripped back, spacious, more introspective moments and of course some more in your face, adrenaline, up-tempo moments as well. And what about the new single, Pixelated People? It‟s out on the 12th February. That song is basically about what I kinda feel is the corrosive and wear and tear that the city can afflict. The overworked, overplayed, partying too hard, working too hard, doing everything at the maximum of your capacity to the point where you just feel like you‟re running on empty. And worse than that, just as you feel like you‟re running on empty, you go out and wreck yourself just to deal with it. I guess
there‟s an undertone of disenchantment in that song but it‟s also about so many young people I know who are just under so much pressure to achieve their dreams, and the pressure we put onto ourselves to get to the top and the toll that pressure takes.
There seems to also be a lot of symbolism in Live What I Die For, do those themes relate to you on a personal level? The title of the song really sums up the whole meaning of it. Live What I Die For basically means trying to live with a pure heart through the things that would also die for in the same breast; only living for the things that mean so much to you that you‟d also die for them. It was also inspired by
and written from the heart to a dear friend of mine who passed away ten years ago. I guess it‟s also a message about living for someone that you‟ve lost; living at the max of your capacity for someone that isn‟t here anymore. What is your opinion on chart music right now and how do you see it changing in the coming years? I think on the whole, these things go in cycles. There seems to be different types of music that dominate the charts at different points. I mean 10 years ago, there was a big sort of indie movement that moved into a more kind of contemporary R&B/hiphop phase and obviously the whole electronic/dubstep movement has just been
huge in the charts for the last couple of years as well. I think what‟s in the charts is usually quite representative of what kids want to be hearing and you‟ve got to give respect for that; at the same time though, creating something musically that you believe will have longevity beyond the moment. I guess I‟ve always wanted to make an album that could stand the test of time and whilst still having relevance now, still sounding interesting and fresh in 10-15 years time, like the records I‟ve already mentioned like Portishead and Massive Attack. Radiohead as well are another one.
Lastly, what does the future hold for Jess Mills? In the next 5 years, I hope I‟ll be onto my third album and again, have extensively toured my music and continued to work with really exciting, creative people across the board, whether it be musically or moving into all the other stuff that music opens up the possibilities to: working with people in art and fashion and all the other amazing creative avenues that suddenly unfold when you‟re making music. Also, to just to keep making music that I believe in and that I
love and people still genuinely respond to. Any final shout outs? I always have to give a shout out to James Breakage, Maya Jane Coles who I‟m about to be doing a lot of work with and he‟s also just remixed my new single, Pixelated People, and to Sam Frank who I‟m sure we‟ll be hearing a lot more of Jess Mills as the year progresses. Pixelated People is out on 12th February.

Britain has broken. Anarchy and mayhem have finally become a way of life. The system has shut down and politics has imploded. Even being famous doesn‟t mean as much as it once did. Nowadays it‟s friend vs. friend, celebrity vs. celebrity and reality vs. fiction. Of course it was all shown on television, so perhaps you watched it? But even in hell there are love stories left to tell…Meet Zach, Albie and Archie, three nobodies with something to say; the private detective on a case that threatens his own sanity, TV‟s former golden girl who just wants out, and the voice of the people, now the country‟s most wanted man. A trio of
interconnected lives and loves recounted in reverse and wrapped around the dark mystery of a country at war with itself. Through their reflections, confessions and memories a chillingly twisted portrait of a world, not too dissimilar to our own, is slowly revealed. Blending unsettling drama with a wicked streak of humour, Stone Bleeding is a story of worth amongst the worthless, hope amongst the hopeless and love amongst the loveless.
I found a stash of food under a floorboard in the spare room. It was neatly bundled up in a linen bag and tied with rope. A few tins of beans, - some had sausages in - a packet of biscuits, flasks of water, a bottle of Scotch and some packets of fizzy sweets minus the fizz. Hardly the healthiest of midnight feasts, but food is food and you learn not to get picky these days. I remember, as a boy, being delirious with joy whenever we had beans with sausages in for tea. To this adult mouth they tasted absolutely vile. There is, of course, a whole stack of adult disappointments, but that is very near the top of the list. I hadn‟t expected to find any clues in their old house there wasn‟t much there that indicated a life lived but I like to get a feel for
my clients. I used to know a detective many years ago and he said he used to do something similar: he said that there was much to be gleaned from spending time at the victims‟ place of dwelling and piecing together their life, by that which was important to them. He said you could tell a lot about someone just by what they had out on their shelves, by looking at what they deemed worthy of show you could, if you were astute enough, know all that was pertinent to that person‟s life. Here of course, in chez Pigeon, in the current climate, it was like trying to guess a portrait with the face rubbed out. I still like to do it, though. I‟m thorough. I was preparing to leave, ready to move out to try and catch the tail of Mr. Butcher the plumber, when I chanced a look out of the window in
the master bedroom and saw the body of an old lady on the steps to a house opposite. No great surprise, of course - I‟m sure you‟ve seen similar but at that moment, in that frame, there was something utterly repugnant about the whole thing that froze my blood and held me in the window like a broken mannequin. There were smiling children playing next to it, joyful screaming brought from plastic guns and the freedom of this day and every other. I thought of Francis and I as children, and Mary and Ann and their willing companionship, all of us playing out our games together in the deep dark woods. Then, as now, everyone killed each other ten times over and got back up and did it all over again. The immortal children. There was something about that
contrast; young and old, decay and youth that repulsed a fascination out of me and I couldn‟t look away. It‟s harder these days to pinpoint children‟s ages, I find; I suppose these were just shy of teenage trouble, that impossible grey area where people aren‟t sure whether to delight or fear. I watched until they tired of whatever game they had invented and, bonded by friendship or acquaintance, sauntered off to create anew, leaving the old to drain away into the ash-grey morning that never once promised respite or release. I took it as my cue to leave. I have always feared children, and here, plastic gun or not, all I had to defend myself with was a rubber duck. Stone Bleeding is available to buy now.

Interview by Michael Sweeney
Steph Hargreaves is a singer and songwriter from London. She is one of the sweetest girls I have ever photographed and it was a pleasure to work with her. We couldnâ€&#x;t be happier to have her as our first cover girl. So please enjoy the interview between Image 34 as we talk to Steph Hargreaves the ambitious singer, who with we think will take the world by storm.
What made you want to get into music? I've always sung, since I was a baby my parents have stories of me humming songs off the radio. I also use to sing out my window when I was 4 years old, making songs up about my first pet rabbit called small one. Then on my 10th birthday my parents paid for me to take piano

lessons and after a few years I started to write parts of songs. But it was really when studying music at GCSE I was given a task to write an original song. Then my journey as an artist began! What kind of music do you like to make? I would say the songs I write are a mixture of acoustic pop/soul/R&B and Blues. I love to perform live acoustically as I believe as an artist live instrumentation gives a better sound quality & makes it a better experience for fans. What music influences you? Some influences from when I begun to really find my vocal voice were … some of the classic pop artists of the 90's, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and some classic legends such as the Beatles. Some influences from when I begun to really find my vocal voice were … some of the classic pop artists of the 90's, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and some classic legends such as the Beatles. What steps have you taken in order to progress your career? To progress further in my career I decided to study at The Academy of Contemporary Music in order to educate myself about the Business side of the Music industry. This is also to expand on my skills as a musician and a vocalist. Although prior to this I had entered many music competitions, a few being a Live and Unsigned UK and Open Mic UK where I got to the finals with my original music. I have pretty much been what you call a DIY artist as I have created my own website along with a
stream of videos, so I've been in control of everything so far. Which is great when you have a plan mapped out I your head. I have also been gigging a lot around Nottingham and Central London in order to gain a loyal following. And I have been blessed to have performed at some famous venues such as The pheasantry - pizza express in Chelsea and I am performing on the 21st April 2012 at The Nottingham Playhouse which I am so excited about! I also got to sing live on BBC radio Nottingham on the Richard Spurs show, which was great fun. And Leading on from this I got the opportunity to featured on the Vanessa Feltz show with my elder sister Elena Hargreaves on channel five, as they discovered us through our internet channels on YouTube and twitter. How did you write your first single “When will I? This song was inspired by a long distance relationship I was in. On this one occasion I knew I wouldn't see my other half for a few months
and saying goodbye is never easy. Heart breaking if anything and I sat on a train overwhelmed by it all in floods of tears. So I wrote down my thoughts and it became my first single, when will I. Song-writing is almost like my therapy, I find it hard to discuss how I feel at times in life. So I hope it brings comfort to someone else who has experienced something similar. Did you enjoy your first video shoot with Milletti Films? Yes! It was so much fun. We filmed everything in less than half a day. Milletti Films were brilliant they instantly made me feel at ease. It was amazing just seeing the final product before it was launched on the internet, knowing that it was my song in the video made me realise how hard I have worked over the last few years and its paying off. Do you have any advice for any other up and coming singers? Yes of course! A few things
I've along the way, there are two types of people radiators and drains! Radiators are those positive and supportive people that encourage you to follow your dreams, where as DRAINS are the opposite these are bullies and negative people that want to see you fail and drain away your determination. So the more positive friends and family you have, the easier it is to work hard for something you love. Knowledge is key. Learn what is happening in the Music Industry and adapt to it. This way you will survive, look after your voice. Don't smoke or drink too much, or you'll destroy what you have and you can never get this back once itâ€&#x;s damaged! And finally learn your craft like the back of your hand if you want to be respected as an artist. Lastly you have to love what you do and NEVER GIVE UP! Do you have an album in the works? Well at present I am in talks with a label... where I could be working with some
amazing UK song writers so watch this space. But I will definitely have an album by the end of 2012!

I am also in talks of filming my second music video with Milletti films for another track on my EP called Numbing. Some exciting events I have coming up this year are some future dates at the famous venue - The pheasantry in Chelsea, London and also I look forward to performing at The Nottingham Playhouse on the 21st April 2012 with my sister Elena Hargreaves so I can't wait. Pattern, Colour, Sharp and Chic: All You Need For Your Spring/Summer 2012 Wardrobe While cold weather still out there over the whole country, wrapped up in thick clothes annoys me quite badly as it is impossible to move around as the way I would like to do in the mild Spring/Summer. Speaking of weather, it is actually one of the biggest influencers to convince ourselves to go on a clothing shopping trip and get some decent clothes to mix and match your wardrobe. However, walking on the high street for most of guys sometimes is a nightmare except those guys who are born for shopping. There are quite a lot of reasons I could support this argument, from history, culture, buying
behaviours, to postmodern personality, but those are not important, the most important thing is to get the right outfit, to get the right item which will be in fashion and also mix and match with your existing clothes in your wardrobe. If you achieve this, thatâ€&#x;s pretty rewarding, like a glories victory from a fashion shopping battle. So, to get yourself prepared before fashion purchasing is one of the most important processes that you probably have to do, just in case without aims, wondering around, no ideas whatâ€&#x;s going on, and coming back like a
wounded fashion victim with some clothes not „cool‟. Four words to conclude everything will be in fashion in upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 for me are „Pattern‟, „Colour‟, „Sharp‟, and „Chic‟, after watching all those big brands‟ fashion shows, and attending some menswear press days. Why those four words is not very hard to understand, I will explain in detail with brands example to support, but you have to notice that it is actually a fashion debate, as fashion is a quite vast and general term that exiting in a different format with a different understanding in different individual‟s head.
Supported by high street brand River Island, the press day for Spring/Summer 2012 is flooded with mouth-watering vivid colours and patterns. Despite the classic menswear tailoring presentation or modern menswear structure, these colours such as light purple, bold red, yellow, green, blue, literally like a collection of rainbow, are probably not
associate with menswear at all. Even though using bright colours in Spring/Summer season for fashion is very conventional, but these colours are very handsome applied in each individual piece as they are not clean, not complicated, not mix with other bright colours, neither making
you feel dizzy. If you have resistance on these sugar colours, maybe you won‟t be that „cool‟ in your mates group for a whole season. Different kind of patterns and graphic prints on your shits, knitwear, or everything will be continuous in fashion as a very trendy heritage. If you have no idea what I‟m talking about, you probably miss out quite a few seasons, so taking a good look at these pictures, like from high street brand Topman, River Island, Zara, to ready-to-wear D&G, loads exciting and mysterious patterns on the clothes design to create more sophistication atmosphere on what you are wearing. If you doubt why this happen, A simple understanding
here, human beings‟ eyes have more impulse reflection on bold colours, complicated structures, new patterns, and so on. So be brave and accept the patterns designs to make yourself become the spotlight in a right way; however, if you dress in a whole patterned mass, I cannot guarantee the positive comments behind your back.
So it is important to be clean, to be sharp and to be a masculine chic. This works for all of us as young men who would like to strike a personalised fashion pose, although some people would like to wear anything bizarre on their body for the purpose of drawing attention. Dressing in a style is a good term but not very specific, I would like alter into dressing in a structure. For SAMUEL JING, the character on my personal men‟s fashion blog, a
structure of „Funnel„ is the best choice for all guys to be honest for 1) to raise your masculine powerful in a big time; 2) looking in a serious constructed way with more authorities; and 3) very safe, classic, functional, popular and trendy fashion design used by most fashion retailers in the world. What I mean „Funnel‟ is like the tool itself, with one end strong wide open and one end narrowed downwards. Applying into styling method, guys we should emphasise on our shoulder part by strengthening it wider, no matter what you do, maybe work out in a gym, put accessories, or layering up an outwear jacket to make the shoulder wider; and then try to get a narrowed skinny leg trousers but with a slightly relaxed bottom part, in other
words, tight on your leg to your feet but wider on your bottom. Looking chic is getting its way up in terms of fashion styling, as the modern consumersâ€&#x; requirements to make things simple without too much endless concerns. Spring/Summer collections from Carven Homme (a famous French fashion house relaunched menswear line) or Marni (a famous Italian brand which emphases on clean look with a special attention on sporty fabrics), both collection are great choices from guys who would like to dress with a purpose of being clean but punchy the same time. Also, when choosing clean cut clothes, it will be beneficial if you have a good look at its fabrics (which should be very high quality with right colour), and its designs (in terms of structure
construction, layering and mix and match with your existing clothes), if you fail one of the rules, you probably have to return the clothes and read this paragraph again.
Spring/Summer in 2012 will be very exciting indeed, with all those bright colours, creative patterns and prints. Personally I cannot wait to get rid of all the dark coloured winter clothes to make a change. Dressing with a structure, looking sharp and chic is probably one style tip that might help you if you lost on your fashion track.
Back on the fashion shopping battlefield, seriously it wonâ€&#x;t be that hard, maybe it is the time for you to make yourself a decision on what you are wearing, and how you like to wear, not your girlfriends, your mother, not even some random salesperson. WORDS By Samuel Jing

More Shoes?
Words By Michael Sweeney
Stood inside the magical place normal people call a clothing store you hold in your hands an item which will make you ask the hardest question you will ever face in your life and unfortunately one that will always re occur. Do I need these shoes? Yes of course you need these shoes, these shoes will make you look and feel better, however a very small number pops into your head which you realise is the pathetic excuse of your bank balance. No matter
how many times you find yourself sighing at the cash machine at the small number that never will stay high for very long you decide to cheer yourself up and go shopping. With the intention to only look and not touch or buy. This is where we find ourselves looking over endless rails of clothing all screaming and shouting at you buy me. Buy me. BUY ME!
And as predictable as that chick flick film you know the ending before it‟s even begun. You will leave with something and there will be smiles all round. So as you stand there looking at these shoes hoping someone will come along and tell you to buy them, so you feel it was their fault later and not yours. No one does and you are left with that question alone. But you consider pondering for ages sometimes knowing that it doesn‟t really matter what happens you will be buying them, you just have to pretend you thought about it so it doesn‟t seem as if you made a rash decision. However when buying these shoes you know it will mean having to stay in as you can no longer afford to go out and the fridge will stay empty and you will live on beans
and toast for every meal this week. However what I never realised before was that the price never is really that much of an issue in the pros and cons of 'Should I get these shoes?' The price is only a small factor... the big question is do I really need them? This has a simple answer, yes. But if it was down to just the price nearly all the time it will be no.
Once we have finally got over the ordeal that is buying the new shoes and the question 'did we really need them?' we then feel liberated, joy rushes through your body, nothing can stop you, and nothing will stop you, shoes for everyone. Then you squeeze through the door with all 10 bags of bulging shopping already
struggling to fit in the door let alone your wardrobe. This is another task you know you will have to face. Your feet have now started to hurt and all you want to do is sit down. But this is never the way. Whether you are younger or older someone will be there to tell you off for what you have done. When you were little your parents would stand in the hallway as you tried to sneak in the bags, What are they? I thought you had no money, busted. Boyfriends what are they? I thought you had no money, busted, If you live alone, conscience what are they? I thought you had no money. Busted. Husbands what are they? I thought we had no money, yes you guessed it BUSTED. Now after trying to find a reason why you need these shoes desperately you think to yourself, actually do I need a reason?
Now after trying to find a reason why you need these shoes desperately you think to yourself, actually do I need a reason? Yet you would never dare say it as that would lead to a further argument of why you got them in the first place. But always have answers prepared before you come home because they will ask if they fit well, are they waterproof , how much did they cost you and will they last which to all of these you must say yes of course but who cares, they look pretty and really thatâ€&#x;s all that matters. But what they will never get into their heads is the calling of that clothing store that draws you in and says hey try me on I will make you look wonderful. Then finally after dragging each bag upstairs you look at the floor covered in new clothes. Often when trying them on in the mirror it looks
different to the shop mirrors and you wonder 'oh gosh why did I buy that?' However many hours were spent in the mirrors it always needs to be tried on once more when you get home. Itâ€&#x;s just the rule that your partner will never understand as they stand there saying to everything 'yes it looks wonderful'. But as you lay there in your bed after the lights have turned off and you stare down at the cardboard box that holds the delight of new shoes you can wear tomorrow, you smile to yourself knowing yes these shoes will be what gets you through the day and yes, you may only wear them a few times and they will give you a blister and you will probably get bored and move on; but for now the answer to that question every time it comes up should always be.
Yes. I really do need these shoes.
Feeling the sun hit your face warming your skin and the cool wind blowing your hair. Out in the open you feel nothing but free. No one around but your own mind. This is where you are truly free.

Today‟s issue is on my top 4 rules of spending and saving when it comes to buying make-up, and the art of applying your foundation, so strap yourselves in and keep on reading… Allow me to introduce myself… In August 2010, I nervously called in a large group of extras from the
holding area to start my work as a make-up artist. That was two years ago now, and I can finally have peace of mind when meeting the people who I will be working with, and feel equal to them. The truth is that I stumbled into make-up by accident, I was lucky enough to meet the right people at the right time, but now I‟m working in the industry and loving it! Make-up isn‟t just there to make you feel confident when you‟re on your first date or to distract the eye away from a part of you that you don‟t like. A guy I used to work with once said he hated make-up, “it makes girls become obsessed and ignore all the good that people have to offer, as they‟re too busy caring about how they look, and how they‟re being judged”. I told him to squeeze some of my make-up out, out of its tube and hold it
in his hand, essentially it‟s just paint I declared, chemicals and coloured pigments, some people abuse it and some people use it. He changed his perspective from then on.
I‟m currently running my own Youtube Channel on this very topic, and other adventures of my life, if that sounds like something that interests you, search for „RebandLeo‟.
So why do we love it? Because give us a few hours at the MAC counter and we can feel like the most special girl in the world, funny how paint can do that to someone. I use it in my work to transform the everyday face into a work of art (humour me on the clichés) but that‟s the truth.

Now onto the real business, what you should and shouldn‟t waste your hard earned cash on. For me, brushes are the backbone to any creation; you can create an amazing look with cheap makeup and good brushes. Than you can with poor quality brushes and amazing make-up.

Four Easy Tips On Buying Make-up What you should and shouldn‟t waste your hard earned cash on. For me, brushes are the backbone to any creation; you can create an amazing look with cheap make -up and good brushes than you can with poor quality brushes and amazing make-up. Rule number One: Application, application, application. I recently read a post on „Beauty and the Bullsh*t‟ (check out that blog, it‟s well worth it). The money people waste by buying branded brushes for their personal use and their kits. The
truth is that MAC brushes aren‟t made by MAC, they‟re made in a factory next to all the other brushes. I love the 217‟s, 224‟s and 239 brushes as much as the next girl, but when you‟re living on a budget, as most 18-25 year old women are, it‟s worth searching the market before you spend your money. The simplest way to do this is to invest some time into my favourite tool Youtube. Hundreds of thousands of lovers flock there each day to share their insight into this glamorous industry. By typing „MAC dupes‟ in the search bar you‟ll be amazed by the amount of brushes that have been created based on these brushes, for example Sigma have created lines with even the same number coding.
Remember, good brushes are the most useful tools for good make-up application! The simplest way to do this is to invest some time into my favourite tool -Youtube. Remember, good brushes are the most useful tools for good make-up application! Rule number 2: Try before you buy When walking down the brightly lit aisles of a department store, it‟s easy to feel pressured into purchasing items you may not need by the women working on
the counters. Orange faces and white coats sound familiar? (*cough* Clinique). These ladies are paid to get customers, and in my experience, some can drive a hard sell more than others. Don‟t feel intimidated when they start talking at you about the items, and how wonderful they all are, simply ask for a tester! Testers are a great way to take a small amount of the product (usually only applies to creams, liquids and lipsticks) and take it home with you to try out. If you‟re going to spend up to £30 on a foundation you do not
want to walk out into the natural light of day, only to realise it‟s not the Holy Grail that the assistant claimed it to be. Most companies, like MAC and Bobbi Brown will offer you a tester, and ultimately if they want you to return as a loyal customer they should be more than willing to oblige to decant a small amount of product out for you. Rule number 3: Avoid the gimmicks and gadgets Trends will always come and go in the make-up world, and although sticking to what you know and are comfortable with might get a little tedious, make-up companies will always invent new ways to keep you spending. Remember back when lash-growth serum mascara was the latest fad, promising that in two to three weeks you could have longer and thicker lashes as it claimed to enhance your body‟s
natural cycle of lash growth? I‟ve tried it, and the results were conclusive, I spent a few quid extra and ended up with the same old lashes as before. Rotating mascara, wands, roll-on foundation, and the godawful stick on eye-shadow pads. These are all just creative ways to entice you to buy into their brand, whatever happened to putting on your make-up using your hands or a brush?
Rule number 4: A good base makes a pretty face. Simple, get the foundation right and the rest of your look will fall into place. Having good skin will always help, though late nights and too many cocktails are often inevitable downfalls. Start by identifying your skin type, how does your skin react to natural outdoor conditions? Some women may get dry patches around the nose and mouth, whilst getting shine on their forehead; others may have dry skin all over.

How To Get The Best From Your Skin Simple, get the foundation right and the rest of your look will fall into place. I‟ve categorised them into five easy types for you…
-Normal : Congratulations! You‟re neither one nor the other, just a perfect balanced skin type, feel free to moisturise and exfoliate your skin in a consistent routine. -Dry : Your skin is in need of a little extra attention; look after it by drinking plenty of water, a daily and nightly moisturising routine, and especially before applying any makeup. -Oily : Get that foundation on lock down! Applying a matte finish, silicone based primer before foundation will ensure it won‟t budge. Also using a blotting paper
sheets to absorb any excess oil that may collect around your nose, or forehead is always a good idea. Remember that over exfoliating may draw out the oil from your skin temporarily, but your skin will then over compensate and produce even more! -Combination : Bit of a tricky one, you‟ve got some areas that are dry, and some areas (often forehead and nose) that get oily throughout the day. Exfoliate gently as part of your skincare routine and use a primer in your oilier patches before applying foundation to the skin. -Sensitive : If you find your eyes water a lot, or the skin can become irritated or red, you fall into the sensitive category. Do not fear because there are plenty of non-perfumed and non-abrasive products out there for all you sensitive types. Instead of
using a grainy exfoliator, as this is sometimes too harsh, go for cleansers that use „micro-beads‟ as they will gently roll off the impurities from the surface of the skin. Now back to the matter in hand foundation is key to create a flawless and professional final product. It can cover a multitude of sins as long as you get the right one for you, fuller coverage is not always the way forward. Before purchasing your foundation, consider two points - what do you want from it and what does your skin need from it. I tend to go for a „dewy‟ glow to the skin (High-end option: NARS Sheer Glow, Affordable option: Bourjois Healthy Mix) this means the skin looks light reflecting and natural, perfect for dry skins as they are moisturising. Other options are a matte
foundation, perfect for ladies who tend to get oily patches throughout the day) High-end option: MAC Studio Fix fluid, Affordable option: Revlon Colourstay) I won‟t bore you with the multiple ways to apply foundation; the 4 key ways are… -Hands : By using your fingertips to apply foundation, you‟re using the warmth from your skin to gently melt the product as you apply it, this results in a natural coverage, don‟t forget to wash your hands first though girls! -Flat-top buffing brush : These are usually made from taklon-based synthetic hairs (perfect for applying creams and liquids as they don‟t absorb as much of the product) this also gives a lighter coverage finish, as you are working the product into the skin by the buffing circular motions.
-Flat foundation brush : This is the most common and probably the quickest way to apply the foundation, a top tip is to apply your moisturiser and/or primer with the flat foundation brush first. This; 1) Get the brush wet with product so that it won‟t absorb most of your foundation when you come to apply it and; 2) Stick all the bristles together to prevent streaking, nothing worse than a streaky face! Also this method leaves you with the fullest coverage in one application that the foundation can provide you with. -Damp sponge : Used frequently by make-up artists as they are disposable and therefore hygienic, a damp sponge will give the lightest and most even coverage. I hope you enjoyed that and at least got a bit of helpful hints and tips.
