EDITORS LETTER Welcome to Issue Fourteen of Image 34. In this issue we welcome back the beautiful Clara Bond to the cover for her 4th feature and 2nd cover. It was great to have Clara back to work with again. And that’s what I love about Image 34 is the connection we can make with all these artists. We can together creatively make something to share with each and every one of you. It’s great and I love to see the artists progression with 34 being able to help them yet again with what they are doing. As silly as it sounds it’s almost like watching your children grow up. And of course on the flip cover we have Kurt Martinez a singer from Nottingham for his very first feature. Which is again something we love connecting with new exciting artists. So we hope you enjoy our issue of new and old faces that have been involved in the process of this issue. Editor In Chief Michael Sweeney
Kurt Martinez Kurt, Welcome to your first Image 34 magazine interview! So to start what first got you into music? I remember learning to play the guitar at school. I was about 9 years old. The first thing I learnt was My Heart Will Go On from Titanic... It's a wonder I carried on playing, haha! I started writing when I was around 14, playing in a few bands while I was at school. After that I went to college, then university to study music. I figured there's no point doing something I don't enjoy so writing and recording pretty much became my life. I'll
actually be graduating this summer with a Masters in Music Production which just sounds ridiculous thinking back!  Were you scared to take your music solo? I don't think I was. I mean, it's daunting to know that you're souly responsible for a song now. If it turns out bad you can't shift blame elsewhere haha! No, I'd always written stu on my own but I'd never released it. I think it was probably scary knowing that I was stepping in to a dierent genre and what people who'd heard me before might think. But then I guess the music I write is the music I want to
hear at the time. What are the perks of going solo? I don't have to arrange with other people when we're going to practice, or when we're going to hit the studio. I can just do it. I think that's the best thing; I'm on my own time. I think it feels more rewarding too, when someone hears your stu or sees you play and they come up like "That was awesome, well done! Where can I get your stu?''. It's an amazing feeling when people take an interest in something you've spent so much time on. Really amazing! Any negatives from now being a solo singer?
I honestly don't think they're are any. Of course I miss playing with other people on stage, but you know, maybe some day I'll get to play my stu with a band again. It's very band based music. That would be cool to do. I do like to collaborate with other artists and producers though. My favourite thing is waking up to messages from people in the most random places in the world that have come across me somehow. Really makes my day. It's an amazing feeling to have such an online following. If you could pick one artists to collaborate with right now who would it be?
Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 seems to appear on all kinds of things at the minute. Bands that I'm really in to like All Time Low, McBusted and Owl City. To collab with someone of that stature and influence would be incredible. What song is the song you are playing the most right now? Be honest no judgement here. Right now I'm listening a lot to Wiz Khalifa's See You Agian. I'll be honest, I'm not really much or a hip-hop or RnB fan. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate it like anything else. I saw Fast & Furious 7 a few days ago. The song plays as like a homage to Paul
Walker. It's a really nice scene. There wasn't a dry eye around me. That song is just beautiful. How involved with the process of making music do you like to get involved in? Everything on my tracks is me. I don't think people realise until they look me up or see pictures from the studio. I'm a one man band. I'm a Dick Van Dyke. It's a lot of fun! I shut myself away in the studio and just lay what comes. Who inspires you when making music? I've always been a huge pop-punk fan. Blink-182 will always be a great influence. That can't always be heard in my music, especially the more electronic tracks but I
think you can see my humour in the videos too. When can your fans expect new music from you? Â I am literally just wrapping up recording my new EP. It's actually a project of 6 songs, rerecording the tracks I used to perform with my old band. I listened back to our old EP a while back and thought 'damn, if only these songs had been better quality'. So that's exactly what I've done. It's nice to hear them now and how much they've progressed since they were recorded 5 years ago.
Any last shout outs?
Just to check me out online and keep and eye out for the new stu. The new EP will be out this summer, along with a couple of videos and acoustic session videos. I have 3 individual singles to put out after that too with a couple of collabs that will hopefully be released too! Exciting things! ------------------------------------Click here for more on Kurt. -------------------------------------
Clara Bond Clara! Welcome back to your 4th feature and 2nd cover! So tell us one big change that has happened to you since your last feature? I have started writing material for my 3rd EP, and I have become an ambassador for the Skin Angels. Tell us about your new single Porcelain. How did you come about singing that? I was approached last year after a gig to see if I was interested in writing a song for them, so I went in to the Skin
Angels offices and was told all about the cause and I thought it was fantastic. Skin cancer doesn’t get the awareness that it needs and as it is, the numbers are only growing. It’s our hope that raising awareness will lower those numbers. Tell us a bit more about Skin Angels and Teenage Cancer Trust. Skin Angels was set up last year to raise awareness for all year round skin protection. They want to educate young people especially about the effects of the sun so they can make informed decisions in how to look after themselves.
Why did you want to work with them over everyone else? I just thought it was such an important message. Their mantra is “Prevention is better than cure” which is just so incredibly true. There are some really scary statistics and facts which would be enough to make anyone think twice before laying out in the sun unprotected. What is the single about? It’s all about being comfortable in your own skin and not feeling like you have to change your appearance for the approval of others. ‘Porcelain’ refers to the
delicacy of your skin. Whatever your ethnicity and whatever your skin colour, you should embrace it, rather than try and mould yourself into whatever society tells you you should look like. At the end of the music video I’m not wearing any makeup, which I’ll admit was a little daunting at first, but I felt so much more comfortable than having the usual three hundred layers of makeup and false eyelashes that a music video shoot usually entails. Was it hard writing a song for a cause? I wanted to assure them that they had made the right decision in choosing me as their ambassador. It’s an incredible cause with a real opportunity to make a
get across while still bearing the Teenage Cancer Trust in mind. What do you hope the single will achieve? I hope that the single successfully spreads the message that we are trying to share. I know how hard it can be to look in magazines and see these bronzed women on every page photoshopped up to the eyeballs and not feel a little insecure. I personally don’t think there are enough pale role models in the media. Nicole Kidman is also trying to encourage girls to embrace their pale skin, which I think is absolutely fantastic. All the proceeds from the sale of ‘Porcelain’ go to
the Teenage Cancer Trust, so we’re hoping to raise as much money for them as possible through the downloads. Now tell us what is your current favourite song and why? My taste in music ranges from “This is so deep and meaningful, this song speaks to my soul” and “I know, please don’t judge me”. At the moment, it’d be the latter. That incredibly annoying-yet-wonderful Carly Rae Jepsen “I Really Like You” song. Im going to regret admitting to this. Is there an album you currently have on repeat? The new James Bay album has been on loop in my house since it came out. I
difference, so I didn’t want to let them down. When I played the song to them for the first time, I was so nervous I couldn’t look anyone in the eye. But I tried to include everything the Skin Angels wanted to can’t fault it. I love that Nashville production on it, there really is no substitute for incredible musicians. You can tell he’s working with a really strong team of people that help him embrace his sound. If you could have another artist collaborate with you on a song, who would it be and why? I’ve always really wanted
to collaborate with a male musician. I’m so obsessed with how harmonies work between a male vocal and a female vocal. Obviously a James Bay collaboration would be wonderful. The dream. What would that song to be like? It would probably hit you right in the face. Now one question that your fans will be dying to know. When can they expect more music from you? I’m hoping to release another EP in September, once I get back from America. I’ve been writing the tracks pretty much since the Focus EP so it’s
going to be really hard to choose which songs to put on this one. I am thinking that it might be more of a 6 track EP than 4 because it’s going to be too hard to narrow down the numbers. How would you describe your new music? With every release I try and get a little more honest and open with my lyrics. It’s quite hard to be so autobiographical because you’re putting so much of yourself out there. I’m starting to use my songs as an opportunity to tell a story. There are a couple of really sincere stories
on this EP, so I’m nervous for people to hear them, but excited at the same time. Any last shout outs? Thank you to everyone who has been downloading my music since my first feature in Image34. I promise this next release won’t let you down. ------------------------------------Click here to buy Clara’s new single Procelain ------------------------------------Or click here for more on Clara. -------------------------------------
mesmi Starting off what led you into music? Music has always been kind of a strange creature in my life. It’s something I love and connect to, but I grew up with an extremely limited exposure to it, in terms of scope, so there aren't really clear instances - it's more like this hidden thread. Culturally and in my family, music’s something you would never consider–creative careers in general aren’t even on the table–and no one I knew personally was involved in music, so it was especially difficult for me to get a
sense of what music really meant to me. Music was just innately taboo. If I heard or learned anything growing up, it was pretty much guaranteed to be classical, which is a great foundation but is just its own world, completely different from modern pop. But I love great songs, I think music really helped me reach and realize things in my heart I couldn't admit otherwise, and I'd always find myself secretly coming back to it. Long story short, things all came to a head in the past several years as I had a lot of different experiences in trying to “find myself,” and I basically found music at the end of the road, waving and
saying, “Hey, it’s me. Still here.” It basically took my whole life to own up to it, but here we are! If you hadn’t come across music where do you think you would be now? It really could be anything. Before I realized that music was it for me, I dipped my toes in a a myriad of other pools. Medical research, book publishing, art & lifestyle, environmental science, international development… really all over the map. It's kind of wonderful that the world is full of so many beautiful and interesting things, though of course it's not always so great in
the actual workplace. We’ve all been there! At the heart of it, I just happen to be happiest creating and helping people. Is the music you write similar to what you listen to yourself? In some ways. I enjoy and listen to a very wide range of styles, from pop to country to hip hop to classical, and I feel like I'm still constantly learning and exploring sounds, still catching up from growing up within such a limited scope. I usually enjoy music most though when there’s a synergy between the quality of music and the quality of lyrics, a kind of perfect match. That's the
kind of music I can always go back to and something I strive to create in my songs. How would you describe your music? I would say it’s a blend of pop, folk and soul, lyrically tending to be reflective and often exploring these modern coming-of-age ideas. Sometimes a little melancholy perhaps, or a little tongue-in-cheek. I also call it alt-pop, alternative pop. Where do you feel most inspired to write music? It's more moments, thoughts and feelings that inspire me, rather than a certain place. A character in a book or a situation in a movie may spark something, or
someone may make a remark that just sets me off, and it'll all come out from there. What would you like people to take from your music? I just hope people feel connected - to themselves, to the song, to each other. I would love it if it helps people feel understood or helps them understand something about themselves. That's some of the strongest and greatest things music has done for me - I think there’s something really vital and restorative in that. A lot of times we're so caught up in our lives, in the world, in the noise, I don't think we really get the chance to think about who we are, what's going on around us as well as inside of us. I
hope my music can help create a space for that. Trying to create that vibe, I call it "songs that listen.”
an artist who hasn't had a "big hit" or "breakthrough" moment yet, I think people sometimes find it hard to take that seriously.
Can you play any instruments (if so what)? Yes, I grew up playing classical piano and violin. My main instrument is piano though, and I also play some guitar. Being a young artist do you find it hard for people to take you seriously sometimes? I don't think it has much to do with being young. I think it's actually a great advantage to be young in the music industry, and for that edge I'm already too old! Just being an artist though, or
This time next year what do you hope to have achieved? I'd hope the project I'm currently in the middle of working on has taken wing and gotten some air off the ground! I always write my own songs, and so far I've released five of them, but this time I plan on a larger project and on selfproducing it as well. It's going to take a lot, but I'm hoping it will go farther. From there, it's taking the music to find its listeners, or to find each other, really, so hoping for bigger stages, expanding touring, getting airplay or sync exposure, all
that would be great. Most of all, I just hope I've gone as hard at it as I can this year. To be a better musician, a better writer, and a better world citizen. What’s next for you? Aside from going fathoms-deep into this next project, I'm playing a number of events over the summer, like the San Diego County Fair and various other festivals. I've started collaborating with other musicians recently, so I'm looking forward to continuing more of that as well. Any last shout-outs? I want to say a big thank you to everyone who’s
supported me thus far. I was scared out of my mind in beginning this journey, so I'm incredibly grateful to all the people who have helped me get to this point, from friends, to family, to random encounters. Also, shout-outs to AsiAM, a new organization for Asian Americans in the music industry and VATOCA, a visual arts house both are organizations I've recently become involved in and am happy to be working with. Last but not least, of course a huge thank you to Michael for inviting and having me in my first Image 34 interview. ------------------------------------Click here for more on mesmi
Daughters Of Davies Daughters of Davis (Adrienne & Fern) welcome to Image 34 magazine! For anybody who doesn’t know you give us a quick summary of who you are. We’re two sisters from Southampton who are in a soul/folk band. We sold practically all our possessions 3 years ago and quit our jobs to follow our dreams and pursue a career in music. Since then we’ve been touring the country in a campervan and bringing our music to every stretch of the UK and to Europe too! Of course we had the delight of seeing you perform in Portsmouth as
part of Sam Baileys “Power Of Love” Tour. How was that for you? Opening shows for Sam was amazing, we played so many dream venues and it was great playing a venue so near to home. I guess it felt a bit strange too as we’ve driven past the Portmouth Guildhall many times but never really thought we’d end up playing there on tour! What was your favourite part of the tour? Constant Tea-on-Tap!! ;) Hehe! ….and of course getting to meet so many amazing new friends on the road. Sam’s fan base are awesome and it really felt like they embraced us! She
draws a great crowd! What was Sam like on tour? Sam was a diamond and so were the crew and her band! She was so down to earth and funny too..She actually had us in stitches most of the time! Did she give you any advice on music? Yeah she told us about a steamer for your vocals that works amazingly for hydrating your voice before you sing! There I’ve let you into a trade industry secret now! It’s basically the kind you might use to seam your face in a facial, but you breath in the steam and *hey-presto!!* you sound like Sam Bailey! hehe! Awww well I'm not sure that that actually happens sadly, but a good tip
nonetheless! You said on stage about your DVD about sharing a caravan on the road. What was that like? Our first van was cramped, ice cold in the winter with no heating, but crazy hot in the summer, like a greenhouse! That tin nearly boiled us both alive! But thankfully we have a van sponsorship from Elddis now and we have new van! They are our greatest Tour Heroes! The new van is a dream, it even has a shower so we don't need to find random rivers to bath in anymore! :) What was the best part about staying in a caravan on the road? The best part was the freedom of being able to go anywhere, see new places
and meet so many different people all over the country. We made some really great friends on the road who we otherwise just might not have ever met! There’s so much inspiration and adventure out there with the constantly changing scenery, you never know what the day is going to bring!
sometimes too and certainly family…It’s hard not getting to see people when you miss them. We’re learning more and more though to just to go with the flow and enjoy where you are, wherever it is..I think if the sun still rises on you, then you have something to be grateful for indeed :)
Of course you knew this would come next. What was the worst? Well with anything there is always the flip side. I guess as much as it was fun having all the freedom, it also was total chaos too with no structure or routine. Joining a gym or taking up a regular dance class or something like that is something that just wasn't really possible. I think you can miss routine
Would you do it again? Yeah well we still kind of are!..except we’re now in our new van from Elddis! He’s called Otis and we love him! We try to tour more sensibly now and go off on long stints and then get back down south to see family and friends in between. What did you learn from the experience of living on the caravan?
We learnt that the UK and (even further a field to Europe too) have a heart of gold! The amount of kindness shown to us on the road from former strangers was incredible! So many people would say come round for some food and a shower, have a key and stay …it was amazing! It really showed us how friendly we are as a nation… it’s not an image that gets promoted that much too with the News always telling us sad stories.. but it is true! UK ….you rock! :D Going onto your music. How involved with the process of making music (e.g writing, playing all the instruments) do you like to get involved in? Fully involved! We write all our own music, we play our
own instruments.. Adrienne taught herself guitar at 20 and I learnt Cajon and Uke on the road along with our singing of course. Who inspires you when making music? Michael Jackson a lot, but also Motown artists like Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, but then we also love more modern acoustic artists like Dallas Green & Bon Iver too.. Do you have any new material on the way? (We know you do but for the sake of the interview we have to ask this question) Yes we do we have a new album in the works..it’s going to be called ‘#NotPayingTheGame’ How can people get
involved with this? Well it’s quite exciting because we're putting the power in the peoples’ hands! We’re going to bypass the record labels and bring you guys a brand new album by the end of the year soley funded by this crowdfunder site. So if you want to hear awesome new DoD songs, you can get it straight into your hands along with exclusive goodies and treats! All you need to do is check out our Rocket Fuel crowdfunder site and see how you can make the album happen and support our mission www.rocketfuelhq.com/ daughtersofdavis What can fans receive if they help fund the album?
Rocket Fuel is totally key..people can support us regularly and we'll lavish them with a wealth of rewards or you can purchase music, merchandise directly and get completely unique and creative experiences… like… handwritten lyrics of your favourite DoD song, a commissioned painting by me, Fern, who has a BA (Hons) in Fine Art… or fancy a house concert gig in your home? It’s all there, go see :) When rocketfuel ends can fans still get involved with this new album? Yes, well we run new missions all the time with Rocket Fuel so the one after this will be to take the album on our own headline tour so fear not! We’ll also
be looking to see where fans want us to go..so look out we could be coming to a town near you! What do you hope to achieve with this album? We would like it to raise awareness of our new campaign #NotPayingTheGame which is why we are calling our album this title. Most of the album will be based on this concept too…we just want to get the message out there that you don't need to play by the media’s rules about what’s of worth and value… for example if you don't fit the media mold well you’re more than ok with us!..sure, what you see can be good or beautiful, but it’s not the only type that should be venerated..the most
important thing is to be yourself, it’s ok to be different! What has been your inspirations for it? Well not only have we had our own battles with self image, but we've also come across many people on the road who seem to struggle with that too..I mean even people who appear to fit the stereotype ‘beautiful’ or ‘manly’ mold aren’t happy with how they are..it’s crazy right, but then again who can feel good about themselves when they’re competing with photoshop! It’s a challenge to be who you are and not want to be something else, but it’s vital. As we age for example we shouldn't feel rubbish and past our best; we should be admired for
growing our character and for the things we have learnt and developed in. Too much attention is poured into superficial things..We just think there should be less significance on physical appearance and more on the important things, like being a good parent or a better friend..we should be complimenting people for their patience and kindness, not just their hair style or physique! So it’s a big topic to delve into, but that’s why we also releasing our website soon called www.NotPayingTheGame.c om where you can find out more..It has loads of inspiring videos, and blog posts you can get involved in..You can also see us joining the challenge to stand out against the norm in many different
ways..there’s even pics of us in our baggies, with no make-up on, the works… sure, it can be nice to play with image and style, and wear make up, but we’re just saying that it shouldn’t define us! If you want to join in send us your #Lol@Urself #NoMakeUp selfies (boys - #NoHairGel ones for you! : ) When can fans expect a release? By the end of the year!… should we have a successful Rocket Fuel Crowdfunder campaign that is… So if you’d like to hear it, please do get involved! Any last shout outs? Come and say hey on Twitter @Daughter_Davis, Facebook and Instagram too! Big love to you all xxx
Peter Radford The dealer, the zombie and the wannabe scientist: meet Peter Radford. 24 years old emerging actor and model Peter Radford strikes for his unconditional commitment to his dream, an eclectic selection of favourite movies and an expected resistance to petrol baths. From the Macbeth stage to indie zombie shooter sets, Goodfellas to Toystory and a secret back up plan career as a naturalist, here are 10 answers for which we are betting on this young talent from Nottingham. Â How did you decide you wanted to be an actor and how does the discipline matches with
your personality? Funnily enough I never made a conscious decision to become an actor, it just seemed to happen over time! I always enjoyed entertaining people - this used to get me in trouble at school – but never focused my energy until I took drama at GCSE, after that things just seemed to click. Acting suits me more than any other job I've worked so far; having to strip yourself away from the character means that if you're having a bad day, you can battle it with the strength of your assumed role.  What do you think are the
three best qualities that an emerging actor must have in order to have a successful career? Commitment, passion and humility: love what you do no matter how long it takes to achieve or how far away it may seem, if you lose interest after one take then you're going nowhere. Realise that you're constantly learning and you're never 'the best you can be' in the acting world. Try something new and laugh if it doesn't work. According to your filmography, you have experience in drama/ action movies. In “10 Grams” (his first movie, currently awaiting its release on DVD, Blu-Ray and on-demand in the US and Canada), what was your part and how would
you describe the character? In '10 Grams' I play Oli Brown, a low-level drug runner who oversteps his mark after the boss suggests he's “protected”. It was a low-budget, independent shoot with a relaxed on-set atmosphere, which was beneficial for everyone. I particularly enjoyed my fight scene because I encouraged the other actor to “go for it”, which made the tussle seem more realistic. What would a selection of your favourite movies and actors be like? I have a very eclectic taste: Pan's Labyrinth, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Toy Story, The Truman Show and Donnie Darko are some of my favourite movies. Among
actors, I really love Mark Strong and Michael Fassbender because they’re natural, talented, seemingly down to earth and not fussed on being in the public eye constantly. If you could create your own TV show what scenario would you like to focus on? The best TV focuses on how someone chooses to live their life based on their circumstances. I would aim to create something tangible covering work struggles, relationships, drug problems or depression. Something real. Now that you’re considering modelling, are you starting to look at clothes and style in a different way? What is your relationship with fashion?
I've always loved changing between outfits dependent on how I'm feeling; it's great to have a decent range of different clothes and colours to pick from. I pay closer attention if I'm selecting an outfit for a shoot but enjoy throwing things together if not. Were you offered a great contract in fashion right in this moment, would you take the occasion or would you stick to acting and take the chance with it? I would hope to carry on with both, taking the time between each to focus on the other. I believe it's a world that is closely linked and a step-up in one area could open doors in another. If your acting/modelling career had a
great kick off, what would you miss the most about your town and England? I would miss my girlfriend, my cat, my best friend Simon, my parents and most of all I would miss the simplicity of the indescribable feeling achieved by merely relaxing in my own home after a long day of work. What are you working at right now? Future project? I'm currently preparing myself for a modelling lookbook shoot for Phiri Kollect and I am learning lines for “Deadly Games IV”, a fantasy action feature in which I play a demon bounty hunter. I am also finishing recording lines for my character in
“Zombocalypse: Survivor”, an independent firstperson zombie shooter video game set in Nottingham. Leave us with a quote that inspires you. “All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible” (T.E. Lawrence). ------------------------------------
Eat more to weight less. What food helps to do that? The tendency to eat one or two large meals per day of all the wrong foods is what eventually leads us to tip the scales. You need to consume more meals, and of the right foods to weigh less. If you make one weight loss resolution in 2013 (in addition to exercise), make it to include and frequently consume the following foods above all else. * Signifies sources should be organic to minimize pesticide load and maximize nutrient content. 1. Walnuts ‘Walnuts serve as a delicious-tasting weight loss food. To fully enjoy the benefits of walnuts for weight loss, it is important
to remember that these nuts are a high-calorie food that should be eaten in moderation. Make sure to add only 1.5 ounces (about 20 walnut halves) for maximum benefit to your daily menu.’ Eat them on their own or add them to your salads. This is probably the best way to include them. Don’t make your own salads? Just take them out of your bag and sprinkle them over the salad at work or restaurant. You’ll feel fuller for longer and the salad will have a far more interesting texture. 2. Asparagus When losing weight, it’s important to favor chlorophyll-rich foods, including asparagus. Asparagus is a nutrient rich vegetable packed with folate, vitamins A, C, and K, and fiber. Asparagus also contains a carbohydrate
known as inulin (not to be confused with insulin) that promotes healthy bacteria in the large intestine which in turn promotes a healthier digestive function which ultimately results in better assimilation of nutrients and weight loss. 3. Almonds Loaded with important nutrients like monosaturated fats, vitamin E, folic acid, protein and dietary fibre, almonds are your answer for dipping energy levels and quick healthy snacks. These filling, snackable bites can help keep your blood sugar steady. A study from the University of Toronto found that people who ate almonds with white bread didn’t experience the same blood sugar surges as those who ate just the slice. And the higher blood sugar levels
rise, the lower they fall; that dip leads to hunger, causing people to overeat. Plus, blood sugar changes cause the body to make insulin, which can increase abdominal fat 4. Quinoa Regarded as a sacred food by the Incas, quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) provides a wide range of vitamins and minerals. A complete protein, it has all the essential amino acids needed to build metabolism-revving muscle. Swapping refined grains for whole proteins such as quinoa is not only more nutritious, it can help you lose belly fat. How? Quinoa contain fiber, which makes you feel fuller on less food. One study, published inThe Journal of Nutrition, found that reduced-calorie dieters eating about 115 g of
protein daily lost 22 percent more fat after four months than those who ate 70 g per day. Quinoa is higher in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, and lower in sodium compared with wheat, barley and corn. It the most nutritious glutenfree grain known. 5. Apples is one of the best weight loss foods. Apples are a sweet and crunchy snack full of all sorts of nutritional goodness, and they taste good on their own and in salads, desserts, and savory dishes, too. A study from Penn State University at University Park revealed that people who chomped an apple before a pasta meal ate fewer calories overall than those who had a different snack. Research shows that just two apples a day could help
protect women against heart disease, lowering blood fat levels by almost 25%, a claim unattainable by cardiovascular prescription medications. 6. Black beans Beans have always been the undervalued protein that could work best when used as a substitute for meat. They stay in your digestive system longer and add to the feeling of fullness and a satisfied feeling, aiding weight management. They contain soluble and insoluble fiber, protein, and a type of fat-burning carb called resistant starch. Black beans are really one of the greatest weight loss foods. According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, bean eaters weigh less and have slimmer middles.
7. Coconut Oil One of the healthiest cooking oils in the world, coconut oil enjoys one of the highest stabilities of all oils when heated. 50 % of the fat content in coconut oil is a fat rarely found in nature called lauric acid. Your body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, which has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. Lauric acid is a powerful virus and gramnegative bacteria destroyer, and coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any substance on earth! Coconut oil is about 2/3 medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs. These types of fatty acids produce a whole host of health benefits. It’s nature’s richest source of these healthy MCFAs. Researchers at McGill
University, in Quebec, Canada are now advocating the use of a MCT treat and prevent obesity. The reason most people are overweight is because they simply don’t eat enough good fats. 8. Cauliflower The simplest way to prepare cauliflower is to boil it and add pepper and salt. But this flowery vegetable is an enemy for toxic compounds in your body. The cauliflower is rich is indoles, glucosinolates and thiocyanates that bumps off all the toxic waste in your body. Cauliflower is low in calories while still offering filling fiber. This veggie is also super versatile and can make a great replacement for heavier foods. It is a member of the Cruciferous family of vegetables; other members of this
phytonutrient-rich family include broccoli, Bok choy, cabbage, and kale. Eating cauliflower and other Cruciferous vegetables at least three times a week may significantly reduce your risk of developing all types of cancer. Eating cauliflower may also give your immune system and healing mechanisms a natural boost, as cauliflower is naturally rich in real vitamin C. 9. Cinnamon Everything is nice about this spice. Just 1/2 teaspoon each day can help control your blood sugar and prevent the post meal insulin spike that can trigger your body to store fat rather than burn it. You can also use cinnamon to bring out the natural sweetness in foods, rather than adding calories from sugar. All spices help you
trim down when used to add flavor to foods instead of oil, butter and calorieladen condiments. Valued in ancient times as currency and once considered more precious than gold, cinnamon — one of the world’s oldest known spices — has one of the highest antioxidant values of all foods and its use in medicine treats everything from nausea to menstruation and energy to diabetes. 10. Coffee Raise your mug to higher metabolism! The caffeine in coffee can raise your resting metabolic rate by about 15 percent, and the effect can last up to four hours–that adds up to 30 to 50 calories burned per day. Plus, people who sip 3 to 4 cups of regular or decaf coffee per day are 30 percent less prone to type 2 diabetes.
Chlorogenic acid, found in coffee, may help prevent insulin resistance, which can lead to obesity and diabetes. 11. Eggs are a good source of vitamins, proteins and minerals. As said by nutrition experts, eggs are not only a great source of nutrition, but also very useful to help lose weight. When combining eggs with other dishes you will limit the consumption of complex carbohydrates in the body. Your hunger and food cravings will occur less frequent. Egg itself is sufficient in helping in weight loss. The breakfast staple is loaded with choline, a compound known to help block fat absorption. Eating protein-rich eggs for breakfast reduces hunger and decreases calorie consumption at lunch and
throughout the day. After eight weeks, dieters who ate two eggs, toast and jelly for breakfast five days a week lost 65% more weight than those who had a same-calorie bagel breakfast without eggs, according to a study in the International Journal of Obesity. 12. Raddish Like other types of vegetables, cooked raddish contains approximately 3 grams of fiber per half cup to help you stay full and satisfied. Raddishare considered as starchy vegetables, so it is recommended to be eaten in place of rice, bread or other starchy foods. 13. Garlic help prevent various cancers, fight cardiovascular diseases and diabetes and respiratory problems. Garlic also helps fight various infections.
Overweight people who sprinkled their food with the zero-calorie spice lost an average of 30 pounds in six months, compared to only a 2-pound loss in the control group. Strong flavors like garlic may make food more enjoyable so you feel fuller faster. 14. Avocado Many people are shocked when they first learn that avocados are one of the best foods for weight loss. Avocado is high in monounsaturated fat. Research indicates diets high in monounsaturated fat are more beneficial for weight control because monounsaturated fat exerts beneficial effects on how blood lipid profiles, insulin function and directly affects how the body utilizes blood glucose. Avocado contains a unique weight loss friendly
carbohydrate called mannoheptulose. Mannoheptulose is a rare form of sugar, which has been found to lower insulin secretion. Avocados help to reverse the problems that we see with insulin resistance, by virtue of the presence of mannoheptulose and its high content of good fats. 15. Lentils These legumes are rich in resistant starch (RS), a carbohydrate that may encourage fat burning and shrink fat cells. One cup serving of cooked split peas or lentils provides up to twice as much fibre as other fibre-rich foods. When study participants enjoyed a meal with 5 g of RS-about what you get from 3/4 cup cooked lentils-they burned 23 percent more fat over 24 hours than when they had a meal without the starch,
researchers at the University of Colorado in Denver say. People who consume lentils at least three times a week reduce their risk of developing polyps — small growths in the lining of the bowel which can become cancerous — by a third, researchers say. 16. Olive oil Like avocados, olive oil has healthy fat that increases satiety, taming your appetite. But that’s hardly its only slimming feature. Research shows it has antiinflammatory properties, and chronic inflammation in the body is linked to metabolic syndrome. Drizzle your salad with olive oil and you’ll increase the antioxidant power of your veggies, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition notes. Healthful monounsaturated fats
found in olive oil could potentially switch on genes related to fat burning and storage. The only deficiency with olive oil is its lack of polyunsaturated fats, which contains Essential Fatty Acids (EFA). While ounce for ounce, all oils have the same calories; olive oil has a fuller flavor so less is needed for tantalizing taste. 17. Sweet Potato Yams are packed with antioxidants (like carotenoids), vitamins and minerals. They are quite low on the glycemic scale, meaning you’ll digest them slower and stay full longer. Moreover, nutritionallydense yams in your diet can trigger the satiety center in the brain quickly, make you feel full faster. If you want to lose some pounds, yams may be one food to include in your diet next year. These spuds have RS, the
same carbs found in lentils that may turn up the body’s fat-scorching furnace. RS may also increase production of peptide hormone compounds that signal the brain to stop eating. After a breakfast and a lunch containing RS, subjects ate about 10 percent fewer calories over the next 24 hours compared with when they had similar meals with a placebo, research from the University of Surrey indicates. 18. Chlorella A green algae that contains 18 amino acids, magnesium, zinc and other nutrients; over 4,000 studies published in Japan and Taiwan show chlorella helps cut blood pressure and cholesterol numbers down to size, boosts metabolism, and clobbers abnormal cell growth. It’s
like a tiny green magician with the power to make you feel and look 20 years younger and help many of your medical concerns simply vanish. 19. Pears deliver a dose of fiber (about 5.5 grams per medium-sized fruit), which helps keep you satisfied long after you eat them. But that’s not where their fatfighting power ends. A Brazilian research team found that a group of women who included pears in their diet each day lost more weight than the group who included oat cookies–even though the pears and the oat cookies had the same number of calories. 20. Pomegranate They look like rubies and we believe that they are as precious as them too. Pomegranates reduces arthritis, increase your
immunity, and improve fertility. Long known for its antioxidant properties, the humble pomegranate is a heart patient’s best friend. Scientists believe that the super food has the power to reduce the fat stored round the stomach — the ‘spare tyre’ in men, or ‘muffin top’ in women. While the benefits of drinking pomegranate juice have gained a lot of attention recently, you will be more likely to lose weight by eating the fruit fresh to increase your fiber intake and keep the calories down. Using pomegranate seeds instead of nuts on salad, or eating on their own, prove to be incredible. 21. Red bell peppers This vegetable adds flavor whether it is baked, roasted, cooked or stuffed. Capsicums help to break
down waste that is in the blood, hence a prefect veggie for those suffering with kidney disease. These are sources of vitamin C, and adequate intake of the nutrient has been associated with having a smaller waist. Plus, C has been shown to bolster immunity and prevent cell damage. 22. Hemp foods are expanding onto the shelves of grocery and natural food stores across North America. By definition, these are foods containing whole hemp seeds or the oil, nut (hulled seed) and/or flour (ground seed cake) derived from the seeds. Overall, hemp’s main nutritional advantage over other seeds lies in the composition of its oil, i.e. its fatty acid profile, and in its protein, which contains all of the essential amino acids
in nutritionally significant amounts and in a desirable ratio. This has a significant affect on metabolism allowing the body to shed fat 10% faster than those who don’t consume hemp daily. 23. Tomatoes Whenever you munch, your body releases a hormone called cholecystokinin, which tightens the valve between your stomach and your intestine. As a result, CCK boosts feelings of fullness– making you less apt to overeat. Tomatoes contain oligofructose, a fiber that helps sustain the effects of CCK in your stomach. Bonus: Lycopene, a compound found in tomatoes, has been shown to protect you against sunburn and may help reduce the risk of certain cancers.
24. Millet is a beneficial and delicious staple of any whole grain diet. This nonglutinous grain is over 10percent protein, has high amounts of fiber and Bcomplex vitamins, and because it isn’t an acid forming food, is easy to digest. A research team led by Charles S. Brennan at Lincoln University, New Zealand found that replacing traditional wheat and maize flours in extruded cereals with flours such as millet could lower carbohydrate digestibility, which is linked to the glycemic impact. Millet and other whole grains are a rich source of magnesium, a mineral that acts as a co-factor for more than 300 enzymes, including enzymes involved in the body’s use of glucose and insulin secretion.
25. Blueberries Researchers found that blueberries can break down existing fat cells and prevent new ones from forming, making them a potentially powerful weapon in the fight against rising obesity. Essentially, blueberry polyphenols fight adipogenesis, which is the development of fat cells, and induce lipolysis, which is the breakdown of lipids/ fat. Blueberries also have a low concentration of glycemic carbohydrates that mildly and gradually change into sugar. This sugar does not occur in an amount that is high enough to raise insulin levels. -------------------------------------
