City Goals
Coming to Fruition
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR when many of us are trying to stick to our New Year’s resolutions.
Like you, I, too, have goals that I brainstorm, mull over, and then strive to incorporate into my plans each year. As the saying goes, “Begin with the end in mind.”
Greetings and welcome to the 2025 Edition of the North Royalton Magazine & Community Guide I am Larry Antoskiewicz, Mayor of the City of North Royalton.
One of my biggest goals that I have been working on over the past few years to bring to fruition is the upgrades and beautification that were suggested as part of the 2021 Memorial Park Master Plan. Memorial Park and the City Green are this community’s two largest gathering places, so I want them to be something we can all be proud of, but that takes time.
It started almost 10 years ago when I was still on City Council, and we completely upgraded our playground. Not long after I took office as Mayor in 2020, we began the process of a thorough Memorial Park Master Plan and have been using that for the past four years to systematically guide us in evaluating every single component of the park and plan to try to help us reach the park’s full potential. We’ve replaced the pond bridge with a design that accommodates heavy equipment for future concerts and events; we’ve installed decorative rocks and landscaping to beautify the pond’s shorelines; we completely razed and rebuilt the upper pavilion; we unveiled our new Splash Pad and shade structure; and we added on to our asphalt path, looping it around the pond and lawn.
Last year, through our partnership with the North Royalton City Schools, we completely refinished the park’s six tennis courts. And, the City also completely upgraded one basketball court and transformed another into two dedicated pickleball courts. The back two tennis courts are also lined with four additional pickleball courts, creating a multi-use space.
Another goal I plan to accomplish in the future is completely replacing the lower pavilion by the pond with an all-season shelter that includes restrooms.
In addition to Memorial Park, my administration has also focused extensively on the City Green. Through grant dollars from the County’s Community Development Supplemental Program, we completely removed and added new landscaping around the gazebo and in front of the electronic sign. We also installed signage and landscaping at the Green’s driveway off Bennett Road to create a formal, identifiable entrance. Several trees were planted, many existing trees were trimmed and shaped, and we also added some festive, multi-color flood lights to uplight all the trees along the main walkway, adding a splash of color throughout the Green.
Here at City Hall, one of our main goals is communication. We are always looking for new ways to communicate information about projects, such as these, and upcoming events and news to our residents and businesses. Our City website, northroyalton.org, is a great tool for residents to stay informed and in the loop and features an info alert and a visible calendar of upcoming events and meetings. We also have a monthly City e-Newsletter that residents and businesses can sign up for at northroyalton.org/ newsletter. Another great resource for information is our Facebook page, @ cityofnorthroyaltonOH, which is updated daily. And please, if you ever have any questions about our great city, my staff is always happy to serve you. Thank you all, and I’ll see you soon!
Sincerely,
Larry Antoskiewicz Mayor of the City of North Royalton
GOAL IN ONE: Several improvements have been made to Memorial Park (top) to make it more enjoyable including a new splash pad (above) and replacing the pond bridge (below) to make it better for future events.
of The BestBoth Worlds
By Ken McEntee
NORTH ROYALTON is a bustling suburb that has managed to maintain its quaint rural feel over the years, according to Mayor Larry Antoskiewicz. “That’s something we all want to preserve as we move forward,” Antoskiewicz said.
With the rolling, open fields of its southern areas, many people still think of North Royalton as a farming community, the mayor acknowledged, while noting that the northern side of town is busy with modern dining, retail, and commercial activity that provides residents with just about anything they need. “It’s the best of both worlds,” Antoskiewicz said. “We're a city of more than 31,000 people with a diversity of housing options. You can live in a nice development, but if you want to have a little more land, our southern end has people with horses and apple farms. I think that's always been one of the attractions of North Royalton.”
A Strategic Location
Today, North Royalton’s strategic location provides convenient transportation for businesses, and also makes it easy for residents to do their shopping, visit the country, and access interstate highways all within minutes of home, Antoskiewicz said.
Plenty of Parkland
Royalton Township was founded in 1818 and named after Royalton, Vermont, the native town of settler Knight Sprague, according to the North Royalton Historical Society. The township’s name was later changed to North Royalton before it became a village in 1927 and a city in 1961.
Residents who live in developments also are not far from parks and recreational opportunities. Antoskiewicz noted that parkland makes up about 9 percent of the city’s total area. “The green spaces are a big reason why many people move here," the mayor said. Among the most notable recreational areas are the Cleveland Metroparks’ Mill Stream Run Reservation on the city’s western border and the city’s Memorial Park on State Rd. “We're working to improve [Memorial] Park,” Antoskiewicz said. “We have a new splash pad, a new pavilion, and new walking paths there. There’s a lot going on and still more to do, but we expect to get it all done in the next year or two.”
The city collaborated with the North Royalton City Schools to put in new tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts. Plans also include an all-weather pavilion with restrooms. “There is a lot going on there,” the mayor said.
Senior Activities
There also is plenty happening at the city’s senior center. Aiming to serve its mature population, the city is in the process of renovating the senior center, which is located in the former Royal View Elementary School building. The project is expected to be completed by spring. Antoskiewicz said the city is leasing almost 12,000 square feet of the building from the school district. “We’re redoing the outside entrance and we’re going to turn the gym area into a place where we can hold events for the seniors,” Antoskiewicz said. “I’m
UNFORGETTABLE: Memorial Park has a new splash pad, a new pavilion and walking paths in addition to tennis, pickleball and basketball courts.

looking forward to having a nice new place where the seniors can go. Many of them are going elsewhere and we want to bring them back where they are closer to home. We want them to have a place that's friendly, where they can mingle with friends, have a cup of coffee, and participate in activities. It will all be on one floor.”
The City Green
A short walk from the senior center, the city is working to beautify the historic City Green, the triangular park area surrounded by Royalton, Bennett, and Ridge Roads where the bandstand that adorns the city’s official logo is situated. “It’s right in the center of town so we’re working to bring in some color and spruce
it up,” the mayor said. “We have a lot of activity there, from the annual Home Days to a new event called Halloween Madness to band concerts. It’s a nice place for residents to gather.”
New Development
New residents continue to choose North Royalton as a place to raise their families. “We have some new developments going in, like the one on Sprague Road near York, which has 23 new homes,” Antoskiewicz said. “There is still room for residential development and people are moving in.”
Meanwhile, some infrastructure improvements are expected to pave the way for more commercial development, the mayor said. “We're going to be

installing sewers on Abbey Road, which is zoned commercial from Albion Road down to Route 82 (Royalton Road),” he said. “Once we do that, I think we’re going to see some new commercial and industrial type businesses coming into the city. We'll have more than 100 acres of commercially zoned property that has never been developed because there's never been any infrastructure there. New commercial development will be a huge boost to the city’s tax revenue and will allow us to keep taxes down.”
The mayor noted that the city recently approved changes in its zoning codes, “which I think will help us to expand our footprint as well.”

Business-Friendly
Antoskiewicz said many local businesses are small operations owned by people who also are residents of the city. “Running a business in your own city shows a real commitment to the community,” he said. “North Royalton is a business-friendly city. We work to support our businesses. When business owners look for a community to operate in, they want to feel like it's a good investment.”
While the commercial sector grows, Antoskiewicz said, “I don't ever see us being a super busy city. We're never going to be a mall city. We're never going to be that type of a city. It's vital that our business community expand, but we also want our charming picturesque qualities to remain intact. I think that's kind of what people like about us.”

As you likely read in my opening welcome letter, our city gathering spaces – Memorial Park and the City Green -- have been a major area of focus for my administration. We have a ourishing business community, excellent schools, healthy nances, and diverse housing options, all components that are incredibly important to the success of a community. But, equally vital to our success is ensuring that North Royalton is not only a wonderful place to live and work, but also a great place to play. I want our families to be able to have fun and enjoy themselves right here in our own backyard.
That’s why I have been serving my residents through recreation, too, providing several opportunities for them to get together to celebrate community and enjoy all that North Royalton has to o er. We have worked diligently to beautify Memorial Park and the City Green. They are often the stage for many of the major events in our community. Those events, planned and organized by our Events Committee, have taken root and are gaining more and more momentum and excitement each year. These events include:
• George Modock Jr. Memorial Fishing Derby on June 6
• Two movie nights on June 13 and July 18
• Parkapalooza I on June 21
• Touch-a-Truck/National Police Night Out on Aug. 5
• Community Car Show on Aug. 9
• Parkapalooza II on Sept. 20
• Halloween Madness and Trick-or-Treat Street on Oct. 18
• Annual Health and Family Expo/ Bear Run, in conjunction with the Schools, UH, and Southwest General, on Nov. 1
• Holiday Lighting Ceremony on Nov. 30. We rely on the generosity of our businesses, organizations, and community members to help make these happen with as little cost to our residents as possible. Sponsorship opportunities are available for those who would like to donate monetarily to the success of these events, such as sponsoring a certain event or
sponsoring a component of an event - for example, a band or even our annual Home Days Fireworks Display. We appreciate community partners for collaborating with us on behalf of residents. All donors are publicly recognized frequently on our social media, website, city newsletter, city electronic sign, and publicity materials. More information and forms are available on the event page of our website, www.northroyalton.org.
The best way to stay up to date on events and happenings is by regularly checking our city website, which features a community calendar, and by visiting our city Facebook page, @ cityofnorthroyaltonOH, which we update daily. All upcoming events are listed at the top of our Facebook page in the events section.
Also, we encourage residents and businesses to sign up for our monthly city e-newsletter, through Constant Contact, where we share various bits of news and information relevant to each month. At the click of a button, this service allows us to send alerts, too, should we need to notify our residents of something pressing. So, please sign up for that at www. northroyalton.org/newsletter.
As you can see, we have quite a bit in store, and we hope you will attend a few of these events, if not all. Community spirit is something my administration works to foster each and every year. I believe it’s an important aspect of any community. We hope all our residents feel at home here in North Royalton!

A Message
from the Superintendent
As we move through the 2024-25 school year, we have an important question to ask...Why not be awesome at everything? Our answer…That is, and always will be our goal.
It is clear that we have great students from great families being engaged by a world-class staff every day. Every activity we have inside and outside of the classroom for our students is an opportunity for students to learn and grow.
To accomplish this, we need a plan. We have a strategic plan in our District that provides focus areas, tasks, and timelines to keep us moving forward. The current strategic plan comes to an end this year and we will spend the spring building a new plan. We are looking forward to working with staff, students, families, and the community to identify our next steps as a District.
I am filled with immense pride and excitement about our continued progress and the bright future ahead for our District. Our journey of excellence continues, solidifying our position as one of the premier educational institutions in the Cleveland area.
We continue this year with utilizing our Strengths Collaborative work with students and staff. The strengths collaborative helps everyone identify their top five strengths and allows them to focus on what they do well, rather than what they may need to improve. It allows everyone to realize what they bring to the team and how they relate to others. This year, we will add more students and staff to the group as we look to expand this work. Our number one goal is to create an engaging, positive culture and this will help us get there.
Communication remains a top priority for us. I encourage you to explore our website at www.northroyaltonsd.org and download our District App to stay connected with all of the exciting developments happening in our schools.
We are excited about the year and look forward to continuing our work to be awesome at everything!

Helpful Hints for
Global Exploration
As we look ahead to 2025, the travel landscape is evolving with advancements in technology, changing consumer preferences, and global shifts in health and safety regulations. Here’s what to anticipate and how to best prepare for your travels.
Biometric security checks at airports, virtual reality previews of destinations, and AI-driven personalized travel itineraries will become more mainstream. You can expect seamless check-ins, and automated customs processes.
Creating meaningful connections and memories rather than ticking off destinations will be the trend in 2025. Seek out unique experiences such as culinary workshops, immersive cultural exchanges, and adventure tourism that elevate your understanding of the places you visit.
Although the world is moving towards post-pandemic norms, the emphasis on health and safety will remain a priority. Vaccination requirements and travel insurance covering health issues will likely remain in demand.
More travel companies will offer options for last-minute changes, credits for future travel, and generous cancellation policies. This will allow you peace of mind and encourage spontaneity.
Whether you’re a seasoned globetrotter or setting out on your first adventure, the keys to success lie in preparation, flexibility, and a commitment to sustainability. For all your travel needs, contact Dina Williams, Cruise Planners, at www.DestinationsYourWay.com

Local Dog Agility Course Tests Skills
Unique to the Cleveland Metroparks, Aukerman Park features an on-leash dog agility course, which includes six agility stations that work to build strength. These stations include a dog walk ramp, a wait table for dogs to climb onto, hound hurdles, an A-frame ramp, a dog teeter-totter, and an agility walk. The structured environment promotes physical exercise, mental stimulation, and improved coordination, contributing to a dog’s overall health and well-being. For the owner, it fosters a stronger bond with their pet through teamwork and communication. Additionally, on-leash courses can provide
a safer space for more timid or reactive dogs, allowing them to build confidence without the risk of running off or engaging in unwelcome behavior.
The Aukerman Park agility course provides dogs and people with a fun, unique way to exercise and interact.
Support in creating this dog-friendly agility course was provided by Dr. Adam Hechko of North Royalton Animal Hospital. Aukerman Park is located at 15561 York Rd., and includes other amenities such as a covered pavilion, restrooms, and walking trails.

A Bright Future
LEAH CANTER, daughter of Jackie & Jeff Canter, was born and raised in North Royalton and is a senior at Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. Following in her parents’ footsteps, she is actively involved in many school and community organizations and events.
At 17 years old, she is the senior editor for her
Taking Players
school's newspaper, The HyBreeze, and is also a member of Quill and Scroll. Canter aims to raise awareness about pressing mental health issues and keep students informed about local events and news.
As an advocate for mental health and a young girl who struggled with anxiety herself, Canter was called to join the pageant world. After competing in multiple state and national pageants, she had a newfound confidence which enabled her to have a successful high school career.
Canter has found a new calling and just this October, she took the oath of enlistment and is in the delayed entry program for the United States Coast Guard. With a passion for cooking and baking, she is taking on the role of a culinary specialist and leaves for boot camp in Cape May, New Jersey after graduation.
The 17-year-old has had a sense of patriotic duty instilled in her, having come from a long line of public servants. She has attended Memorial and Veteran Day ceremonies for as long as she can remember and is proud to serve her country.
Learning from her father, co-owner of BlueLine Classics, she has started a mobile car detailing business called LJ Splash N’ Shine Car Wash. She is always looking for new clients who deserve quality at a fair price.
Whether it’s a ball gown, track uniform, or her operational dress uniform, she has the full support of her family and friends and is looking forward to her future.

The North Royalton Lions Club chartered with Lions International in 1973. At that time, Lions Clubs were men-only clubs. However, there was a provision to allow auxiliary women’s clubs called Lioness Clubs. In 1976, a group of NR women (mostly, but not all, wives of NR Lions members) formed the North Royalton Lioness Club. In 1987 Lions International amended its charter to accept women and in 1992 the NR Lioness Club reorganized to become the Royalton Hills Lions Club.
Both clubs (men’s and women’s) were very active with many important projects in our community (The Lions' motto is “We Serve”) and there was a significant amount of cooperation between the two. In 2021 as both worked to strengthen their services to our community, it became clear that combining the two clubs into one larger, stronger club made sense. So the Royalton Hills Lions decided to close and almost all members transferred to the North Royalton Lions Club. The co-ed “merger” has been a huge success. Our combined club is now 56 members and almost all of our current projects come from both clubs’ histories.
