All That Sheffield Lake Offers! EXPLORE

Sheffield Lake runs along the Lake Erie shoreline about 20 miles west of Cleveland. While just 2.4 square miles, it boasts five lakefront parks that offer amenities for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

In addition to easy access to the lake to watch stunning sunsets, launch a boat, or enjoy a picnic, the city has completed and is still creating miles of nature trails enjoyed by walkers and cyclists. It’s not unusual to see avid birders travel distances during migration season to capture photos of the thousands of birds that take shelter in the trees and woods along the paths, especially along the Lincoln Nature Trail. Residents and visitors can explore five neighborhood parks with features that include a storybook trail, playgrounds, picnic tables and grills, pavilions, basketball courts, baseball fields, and even a skate park!

families, and retirees is a hallmark of this quiet, friendly residential community.

Local businesses offer a variety of shopping and dining options, including family-owned shops, diners, home and personal services, and more. These establishments contribute to the local economy and create gathering spots where neighbors and visitors can connect and unwind.

Opportunities for lifelong learning abound thanks to The Domonkas Library Branch of the Lorain Public Library System, built through a generous donation by a local couple.

The city’s children and teens may attend the SheffieldSheffield Lake Public School District or one of several private schools in the area. Lorain County Community College and the University Partnership is a short drive away and

offers career training, and associate, bachelor, and master degree programs.

The city’s Joyce Hanks Community Center is a hub of activity for classes, organization meetings, and special events. It is situated on the lake in a beautiful park setting that includes a gazebo, outdoor seating, a grill, picnic tables, and a playground.

In the early days of the Civil War, hundreds of local men joined the Union Army. They formed the 103rd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and saw action in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Some who fought and died are buried in nearby Garfield Cemetery. The 103rd O.V.I. maintains a headquarters and museum in the city. That proud tradition of military service has continued to the present day. According to the most recent census, 729 veterans live in Sheffield Lake.

Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City School District

“INSPIRES, EXCITES AND EDUCATES”

Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City School District is an up-and-coming school district located 20 minutes west of Cleveland, Ohio, North of St. Rt. 90 on the shores of Lake Erie. The School District serves approximately 1,650 students with a mission to inspire our students and staff to achieve success, excite our community to continue to support district improvements, and educate our stakeholders about district programs and opportunities. A five-year strategic plan is in place with staff, community, and student support.

A newer 150,000 sq. ft. middle and high school building is the showcase of the district, with the latest in teaching technology, computer labs, maker space rooms, science labs, athletic facilities, and a state-of-the-art television station. The elementary schools are beautiful and well maintained with a focus on early literacy and enrichment to meet each student at the level they need, with experts in the field available as resources.

The district boasts a robotics team that has won at the state level and traveled to the world championships for Vex Robotics, where they competed against 30 different countries.

Students are offered university college courses at no cost to families. Two associate’s degrees may be earned without ever leaving the high school facility. Maker space areas and a cutting-edge T.V. studio help our students enjoy 21stcentury learning opportunities. Academically, our scores continue to grow. Athletically our teams are very competitive with girls volleyball, track, and boys basketball programs winning multiple conference championships. The marching band is renowned as the “wall of sound” and delights fans everywhere they perform.

For a wealth of information on the schools, parent resources, athletics, community outreach, and more, visit us online at www.SheffieldSchools.org.

Earning While Learning

It’s never too late to earn a career-oriented certification or degree. Just ask Keith Adkins.

After two decades working various jobs, from truck driver to line cook to retail associate, he decided to give college another try.

Keith enrolled in Lorain County Community College’s associate degree in network communications technology. The hands-on classes quickly prepared him for an internship with the information technology department at University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center. Earning while learning helped Keith pay for college and support his family.

Just three months after graduating, Keith transitioned to a full-time IT position at the hospital, where he works today.

“Without the knowledge I got at LCCC, I would not be able to get into the IT field.”

Earn and Learn programs are built into many of LCCC’s career pathways. No matter where you are in life or education, you can earn an income and get valuable onthe-job training while you’re going to college, setting you up with real-world experience and a strong resume when you graduate.

What is Title Insurance?

Title insurance takes the risk out of acquiring property. When you purchase property, there’s always a chance that someone other than the seller has a legal right to the property you are purchasing. Title insurance generally includes in-depth research about the status of a title, efforts to correct or clear the title, and an insurance policy to protect against future claims.

There are two types of Title Insurance: Owners Policy of Title Insurance – Insurance against loss by virtue of defects, liens, encumbrances, and other matters of public records, and Mortgagee’s Policy of Title Insurance – Insurance

that protects the lender by guaranteeing that the lender’s mortgage is the first and best lien on the subject property.

Title insurance will pay for defending against any lawsuit attacking your title as insured, and will either clear up title problems or pay the insured’s losses. For a one-time premium, an owner’s title insurance policy remains in effect as long as you, or your heirs, retain an interest in the property.

What is Escrow?

Escrow is an arrangement in which a neutral third party, called an escrow agent, holds legal documents and funds on behalf of a buyer and seller, and distributes them according to written instructions. The escrow agent ensures the buyer and seller hold to all agreements before the transaction is finalized.

Escrow agents ensure that the transaction will close properly and on time; all terms and conditions of the agreement between the buyer and seller are met prior to the sale being finalized; and all required forms have been completed, release documents for any loans or liens have been obtained, and all outstanding fees are collected so that title to the property can be transferred from the seller to the buyer

Choosing the Right Tires

SSelecting the correct tires for your vehicle involves several key factors including driving styles, climate, tire size and tread wear. Here are some tips to help you decide what kind of tire you need and when you need it.

First, consider your driving habits. Off-roaders need specialized tires to help improve control and traction, while city drivers prioritize fuel efficiency and braking. Highway driving demands grip and control. There are different tires that can accommodate any of these driving habits.

Next, think about the climate. All-season tires work well in most conditions and are a great option in Northeast Ohio, but all-weather tires offer better snow traction if that is a concern you have. For severe winter weather, dedicated winter tires are essential, but they should not be used in summer as it will cause them to wear faster.

Apple Slaw

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and once you crunch on some Apple Slaw, you'll be craving it on the daily–which is basically the same thing, right? It's technically even better for you, too, because there's nourishing cabbage, crunchy carrots, sweet red bell peppers, and fresh green onions mixed with the crispy red and Granny Smith apples. Covered in a creamy, sweet dressing, Apple Slaw will have you feeling fine and dandy!

3 cups cabbage, chopped

1 red apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 Granny Smith apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped

1 carrot, grated

1/2 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped

2 green onions, finely chopped

1/3 cup mayonnaise

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoons lemon juice

1. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, red apple, Granny Smith apple, carrot, red bell pepper, and green onion.

2. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, brown sugar, and lemon juice.

3. Pour the dressing over the salad and serve.

Tire size is crucial and is dependent on vehicle and wheel size. Check your vehicle's door jamb or owner's manual for the recommended size. This information is also located on the tire's sidewall. Certain types of tires are only available in limited tire sizes, so this information is important to know as you choose your tires.

Finally, monitor tire wear. All tires are meant to last for a certain length of driving time. When the tread depth wears to 4/32 of an inch, it's time to consider new tires. A 2/32 of an inch tread depth can be hazardous and replacement is mandatory for safety.

By carefully considering these factors, you can select tires that optimize your vehicle's performance and safety. For professional advice on tire selection or any auto care needs, visit Van’s Tire Pros online at www.vanstirepros.com

HONORING THEIR SERVICE

The 103rd O.V.I. of Sheffield Lake celebrates the lives and service of Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Medina County soldiers serving the 103rd regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. It is the oldest Civil War organization composed of direct descendants that continues to meet on an annual basis.

By 1862, the American Civil War was not going well for the Union. The North was in danger of losing the war after decisive defeats at the Battle of Fort Sumter, the First Battle of Bull Run, and the Battle of Wilson’s Creed.

Needing additional soldiers, President Lincoln put out the call for volunteers to serve in the Union Army. A little over one thousand men - mostly farmers - from the northern Ohio counties of Cuyahoga, Medina, and Lorain answered the call. This unit was organized in Cleveland in August 1862 and became known as the 103rd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The 103rd saw action in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee.

The regiment completed its service on June 12, 1865. During its tour, 248 soldiers were killed as a result of their service, with 139 fatalities as a result of combat and 109 due to disease. Despite its losses, the regiment’s outstanding war record and commendable service to the United States serves as a bright spot in American history.

To maintain the close friendships

that were formed during their service, the veterans created the 103rd O.V.I. Association in 1866. They also established an annual reunion for themselves and their families. In 1907, the Association became a corporation. In 1908, the corporation purchased property in Sheffield Lake, Ohio. This property became the permanent home of the organization, its reunions, and (later) a museum dedicated to preserving the history and artifacts of the regiment.

In 1971, the non-profit 103rd O.V.I. Memorial Foundation was established to maintain the organization’s museum. The museum building is a historical treasure listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It was funded and built by four members of the 103rd: George Ellsasser, Co. G; George B. Ford, Co. D, Andrew Dillon, Co. D; and Jacob Nodine, Co. C. After the building was completed, it was named "Elfordilno" in honor of these men, and used by veterans of the 103rd as a barracks during the annual reunions. In the 1970’s the structure was completely restored and became the permanent home for the Museum and its artifacts. The Museum is open to the public during the spring and fall pancake breakfasts and one Sunday a month during the summer. In recent years, the 103rd O.V.I. Memorial Foundation has expanded in scope by creating a scholarship fund for graduating high school seniors entering a form of military service, hosting educational programs and tours at the museum, partnering with other veteran organizations for patriotic events, and continuing to maintain its original charter.

Today, the descendants of the 103rd continue to hold reunions on the banks of Lake Erie, as they have every year since 1867. They gather each summer to nurture the relationships that have formed as a result of the organization, reminisce, and ultimately to continue to honor the service of the brave soldiers of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
