MAYOR'S WELCOME
A strong sense of community and the caring support of neighbors and friends define the Strongsville way of life. Strongsville may be a flourishing suburb of nearly 46,000 residents, but we have retained the feel of a small hometown driven by family and community pride. Our city is energized all year long with a variety of special events and fun activities for people of all ages, from bingo and card games at our wonderful senior center, to soccer and baseball at the city’s many recreation fields, to summer community band concerts and festivals, and other arts and cultural events. The Strongsville Town Center Enhancement Project will bring many new amenities for everyone to enjoy. I am proud to be the mayor of such a remarkable city. The business climate in Strongsville remains strong, as evidenced by a solid 95 percent occupancy rate in our four business parks, where nearly 9,000 people are employed. Our retail and service sector businesses, many of which are locally and familyowned, provide convenient dining and shopping options. The generous sponsorship of these businesses has made this annual Strongsville Image Book and Community Guide possible for its 22nd year. Whether you are a resident, a Strongsville business owner, or a visitor, I’m confident that this magazine will help you to better familiarize yourself with our amazing community.
Welcome to Strongsville! CITY OVERVIEW
Strongsville:
The Crossroads of the Nation
Photo: Iler Aerial Imaging
Due largely to the Cleveland Metroparks Mill Stream Run Reservation that bisects the city, Strongsville’s abundant green space alone exceeds entire land areas encompassed by many full towns in western Cuyahoga County. The park — which Mayor Thomas Perciak calls the “jewel of the city” — features activities like hiking, fishing, bicycling, and tobogganing, offering a serene contrast to Strongsville’s vibrant business districts that provide residents with ample dining and shopping amenities. As early as summer 2024, Town Center, which already hosts many activities for residents of all ages, will be transformed into another jewel — a bustling community gathering place for additional recreational activities and events. Perciak called it “an historic day in the city of Strongsville,” on August 16, when ground was broken for the Strongsville Town Center Enhancement and Walkability Initiative. The project will include a public pavilion, a splash 8 Strongsville Image Book & Community Guide | 2024

pad and interactive fountain, an all-inclusive playground, courts for tennis, pickle ball, sand volleyball, and other sports — and a food truck area. “This project began at least 20 years ago,” Perciak said, noting that it has taken years of studies, resident surveys, and cooperation between various government officials and volunteers to move forward. The 81-acre Town Center area draws about 1 million visitors a year. The area includes the Commons, which host some of Strongsville's most popular community gathering events, like the holiday Winter Wonderland Lighting Celebration, the Strongsville Chamber of Commerce’s summer Homecoming Festival, the Strongsville City Club’s annual Rib Burn-off, and Arts in Strongsville’s Art & Chalk Walk event for budding artists of the future. The Commons was set aside for public use when town founder John Stoughton Strong granted the land to the newly established Strongsville Township in 1821.

A BETTER BALANCE

Crossroads of the Nation 7 Continued from page 8 Off the Commons, the Walter F. Ehrnfelt Recreation Center, the Strongsville Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, the Backyard Preserve nature trails, and the milelong Freedom Trail — one of the largest veteran memorials in Ohio — also are located within the Town Center area. The Town Center project will offer enjoyment for current residents, and will also be a selling point for businesses that consider locating in Strongsville, Perciak said. “As we go through the business parks and meet with business people, they are interested in amenities like this for their employees,” he said. “Things like walking paths their employees can use at lunchtime or a pavilion where they can hold mini seminars and get
The mayor said the Town Center project has brought the community together, with individuals, businesses and civic organizations like the Strongsville City Club, the Rotary Club of Strongsville, the Strongsville Kiwanis, the Chamber and others stepping up with financial support that supplemented grant money that helped to fund the project. “It will be a big new piece to what is already an ideal community,” he said. “Although Strongsville is one of the most populous cities in Cuyahoga County [with almost 46,000 residents], it still has the feel of a small hometown community. There isn’t a better balance of business and recreational amenities than you’ll find here in Strongsville.” The local business community, he added, plays a vital role in tying the community together and funding local events. “They are the financial glue that holds it all together, Perciak says. After Cleveland, Perciak said, Strongsville has the highest total assessed property value of any suburb in Cuyahoga County. “We are a regional leader,” he said. “We want to maintain our own fire and police forces, and we’re also providing dispatch services for other jurisdictions including North Royalton, Berea, Olmsted Falls,

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Businesses Investing in Strongsville

Strongsville’s business parks have drawn the attention of companies around the globe, said Brent Painter, the city’s director of economic development, noting that several businesses have recently located their global or North American headquarters in the city. “We’ve had a really good run of international businesses relocating here,” Painter said, citing manufacturers like CCL Design, a Toronto-based company that opened its new North American headquarters in the Strongsville Business & Technology Park in 2023 as one example. Businesses from Germany, France, the Netherlands, China, and Taiwan are among the companies that have opened or expanded Strongsville facilities in the last two years — comprising just a portion of the heavy burst of new businesses in the city. “Over the last year we had 50 new business openings, more than $50 million in new investment, and more than 738,000 square feet of new activity within our business parks,” Painter said. “Workforce is one of the biggest concerns businesses have when they choose a location,” he said. “They also like to see a thriving business community that shows that employees have already been drawn into the area. That’s why our partnerships with places like Polaris Career Center are so important for workforce development.” Last year, CCL, a manufacturer of labels and design products with almost $5 billion in annual sales, opened a new 112,000 square-foot manufacturing and research & development facility. “CCL is the largest pressure label manufacturer in

the world,” Painter said. “On top of its new R&D facility opened in 2023, CCL recently updated their existing 125,000 square-foot manufacturing facility that is also located within the Strongsville Business & Technology Park.” Other recent projects that involve international companies include: Heroux Devtek Strongsville, a Quebec-based company with $416 million in annual revenue, opened its Global Center of Excellence for landing gear coating, finishing, and assembly. The facility, on Foltz Industrial Parkway, is one of the most advanced coating facilities in the world, Painter said. CertainTeed LLC, a division of Paris-based Saint-Gobain S.A., is a leading brand of exterior/interior building products and relocated its 5Schaeffler AG 109,000 square-foot headquarters to the Business and Technology Park in 2022. AkzoNobel, based in Amsterdam, made substantial investments in its Strongsville Global Research, Development, and Innovation Center last year. Its facility is in the Dow Circle Business Park. “If you’re drinking a beverage from an aluminum can, chances are that can has a Strongsville connection, because 80 percent of all aluminum cans contain a non-corrosive coating manufactured by AkzoNobel,” Painter said. Schaeffler AG, a Herzogenaurach, Germany-based company with $17 billion in annual revenue, located the 250,000 square-foot North American headquarters for its automotive aftermarket division on Route 82. While energy sources and technologies have evolved, PLIDCO® has adapted, developing products that consistently provide highquality, dependable fittings to meet the needs of an ever-changing market. As with all of their products, this new product line is backed by the industry’s only five-year limited warranty and an ISO 9001 certified quality program. company is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of automotive parts. Another German company, Herzog Automation Corp., of Osnabruck, last year began construction of its new U.S. headquarters locally. OMEC Smart Card, of Shanghai, China, last year began renovation of its new 19,000 square-foot smart chip manufacturing facility in the Dow Circle Research and Development Park. The company said it chose Strongsville because of its business-friendly environment, available talent, and access to market. Taiwan-based Brighton Best International, one of the world’s largest suppliers of industrial fasteners, expanded its 235,000 square-foot facility on Commerce Parkway last year. Another Strongsville-headquartered business – Momentive Technologies – continues to grow. The global provider of advanced materials technology for the semiconductor industry is in an ideal position to supply the Intel plant that is now under development near Columbus, Painter said. “As possibly the largest producer of boron nitrate powder in the country Momentive is critical to the growth of semiconductors in this area and they are exploding,” he said. “Without their material, the ability for us to produce silicone chips domestically wouldn’t be feasible. They are exceeding the job growth they expected.” Along with a pool of skilled workers, a city’s financial stability is another important tool for attracting businesses, Painter said.

“Business people are comfortable knowing that we’re Aaa bond rated [by Moodys],” he said. “When people are going to invest tens of millions of dollars, they want to make sure they’re going to a stable community that has appreciating values. We’re one of only 15 municipalities in Ohio that has that bond rating.” The city’s income tax diversity is a large factor in earning that strong bond rating, Painter said. Eighty-two percent of the city’s general fund revenue comes from income tax collections, and the majority of the income tax comes from the city’s business parks, Painter said. “Our top 10 employers account for less than 13 percent of our income tax revenue, meaning close to 88 percent of our revenue comes from companies that are not among the top 10,” he said. “Many cities rely on one major employer that may account for 20 to 25 percent of its tax revenue. If that company moves, is bought out or goes out of business, that city has a real problem. We never want to lose a business, but things happen. On the worst day possible, if we lost our biggest employer, we would still have 98 percent of our tax base intact.”
JARDINE FUNERAL HOME
Keeping the Tradition for 70 Years
Jardine Funeral Home is celebrating 70 years as a Strongsville institution. They are a third-generation, family-owned, fullservice funeral home, established in 1953 by Millar Jardine. Even though the business struggled in the early 1950s, due to Strongsville’s low population, Millar’s persistence and dedication paid off. His sons Jim and George felt it was only natural to join the family business at ages thirteen and fifteen. For many years, Millar and his boys offered the Strongsville community an ambulance and funeral services. In 1972, George became a licensed funeral director and followed in his father’s footsteps as owner-operator. His involvement in the business and in the city of Strongsville can best be described as dedicated and consistent. George’s son, Jason has now continued the family tradition as the third-generation owner-operator of Jardine Funeral Home. He has initiated the slogan “Keeping The Tradition,” in efforts to uphold the 70-year-old, three-generation, familyowned reputation.

Every fall, it also manages the citywide leaf collection program to remove leaves from residents’ tree lawns. The collected leaves are taken to Smith Brothers in Medina where they are composted and used for mulch. City parks are another responsibility of the Service Department. Grass cutting and grooming the fields for sports keep the crew busy throughout the seasons. In addition, the Service Department oversees the Strongsville Cemetery, maintaining the grounds, selling lots, and readying the plots for burial. The department also keeps computer records of lot ownership and burial information. On a festive note, the Service Department sets up the holiday lights and decorations on the Commons for the Winter Wonderland event, as well as set up and assistance for Homecoming, Fourth of July, the Rib BurnOff, and Breakfast on the Bridge. To keep things running smoothly, all of the Department’s vehicles and machines, as well as local police and fire units, are repaired in-house at the mechanic’s bay. That’s a lot to oversee, especially since Strongsville has grown so much in the last 20 years. An example of the City's growth is shown by the little-known fact that Strongsville now has over 400 cul-de-sacs alone! WHEN EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE MATTER High quality general dentistry, implants, orthodontics, and the most advanced technology—right here in Strongsville
Not all dentists and dental offices are created equal. Even though dental offices can be found on almost every corner, exceptional practices are diamonds in the rough. And yes, Aerni Dental is one of those extraordinary diamonds. Practicing for over 30 years, Dr. William Aerni is a general dentist who also performs dental implants and orthodontics. He’s an out-ofthe-ordinary type of dentist who takes the time to listen to his patients and is never in a hurry. A graduate from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Aerni earned the distinguished Robert James Award in recognition of his dedication to the pursuit of excellence in general dentistry and implantology. To this day, his mission is to provide the Gold Standard of Care to each patient and to leave them feeling happier, healthier, and more confident. He believes it’s the most comfortable, quickest, and cost effective way to achieve that beautiful smile for a lifetime. While not all dental practices offer dental implants, it’s been a common procedure at Aerni Dental for over 29 years. Dr. Aerni has

This is my third visit to Dr. Aerni.Today, I had a decayed tooth removed and an implant put in where the tooth was removed. I can’t say enough good about him and his entire staff! My appointment lasted 2 hours, went amazingly smooth, and virtually painless. I’ve never had such a great experience let alone having a tooth pulled and an implant put in on the same day! The high tech equipment used, along with Dr. Aerni and his dental assistants’ professionalism, was second to none. Every time I leave this office, I am more amazed than my previous visits, especially how they took care of me, and took the time to explain everything to me before the treatment started. Additionally, Dr. Aerni and his staff are always friendly, which takes away the uneasiness of going to the dentist!!!” – Andrew Z.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Focus on Good
Oral Health for Your Children Although parents understand the importance of oral health, many are shocked to learn that tooth decay is the number one chronic childhood disease. Many parents do not think toothaches are serious. Treatment is often delayed until the tooth becomes infected, thinking that it will just get better on its own. Tooth decay is a bacteria that continues to spread to neighboring teeth unless treated. Children with tooth decay and dental pain are prone to poor sleep habits, poor speech articulation, missed school and lower performance, and chewing difficulty which all affect overall health and development. The foundation of oral health begins as an infant and continues as children learn the importance of taking care
of their own teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first visit to the dentist by their first birthday. Early prevention is the key to a positive attitude about oral health in later years. Pediatric dentists are the “pediatricians” of dentistry and receive specialized training beyond dental school to treat the needs of primary teeth, children with

special healthcare needs, those who are medically compromised, behaviorally challenged, or extremely anxious, and have hospital affiliations to treat children who need treatment under sedation. Key tips for parents: After bottle feeding, wipe the infant’s mouth with a cloth to prevent early childhood caries (baby bottle decay). Brush your child’s teeth, at least once a day, until the child can neatly write their own name (typically until the age of 8). Early and routine dental visits, recommended every six months, combined with good dental habits and dietary practices, can prevent, slow, or even reverse the decay and crumbling of a tooth or bone in children and promote healthy smiles. HOMES & REAL ESTATE
Thriving
The real estate market has been experiencing a remarkable upswing in recent years. With a thriving economy, a diverse range of industries, and CLE’s vibrant cultural scene nearby, our city has become a sought-after destination for individuals and families looking to establish roots and invest in their future. One of the standout features of our local market is the consistently high demand for housing. The influx of new residents, coupled

with a robust Northeast Ohio job market has created a surge in homebuying activity that includes first-time home buyers, those looking to upsize, and buyers looking for their smaller “right-sized” home. While the demand for resale and new construction housing remains strong, the availability of inventory has become scarce. The graph below shows inventory and pending sales trends over the last 6 years in Strongsville, displaying a high of 117 homes on the market during the first quarter of 2019, to a low of 20 homes in the first quarter of 2022! Your local real estate professionals are at the forefront of the market and can For Sale provide seamless and Pending efficient services for any of your real estate needs. I am proud to be a part of this vibrant market as we assist our clients in navigating the ever-evolving market. –Tina Grant, Manager & Coach, Strongsville Howard Hanna, 330-741-0112.

WINDOW FASHION
Innovations Who doesn’t want life to be easy, safe, and efficient? Thanks to technology, with the press of a button or a voice command we can turn on the lights, see who’s at the front door, pacify a toddler with their favorite show all while a little robotic vacuum cleans the floor. But how many people consider window coverings a technological musthave to help make life easy, safe and efficient? Now entering our twentieth year as a Budget Blinds franchise, we’ve seen many changes to window coverings. From pull cords to cordless, single channel to multi-channel remotes and now we have smart home motorization. Our newest window fashions are not only aesthetically pleasing, they help make the life of a homeowner less of a chore. Imagine waking up to a darkened room but you want to let the morning sun in while still in bed. Maybe later you’re watching a game, but the afternoon sun causes a glare on the TV. With smart home motorization, a voice command or press of a button will open and close your blinds, and you don’t have to get out of bed or move from your favorite chair to do it. What about safety? With motorized blinds, there’s no need for a ladder or pole to adjust two-story window treatments. Another example: We have a wheelchairbound client. She no longer needs to use a cumbersome pole or wait on others to adjust her blinds. Another incredible security feature is being able to schedule your shades to open and close at certain times of the day. Or, using your phone, you can operate the shades even if you’re out of the country! Now that’s safe! For all of your window covering needs, contact the knowledgeable staff at Budget Blinds, 440-572-2480 or visit www.budgetblinds.com/strongsville.

Their original goal was to enrich the community through engaging events and support of local charitable causes. The City Club kicks off each summer with the Rib BurnOff and closes each summer with the Breakfast on the Covered Bridge. The Rib BurnOff is held each June on the Commons and provides three nights of entertainment, great ribs, and other festival food. The Breakfast on the Bridge has been held on the scenic Walter F. See the Difference. Feel the Comfort. – CELEBRATING 20 YEARS –
Strongsville’s Freedom Trail In 2004, Ward 1 Councilman Jim Kaminski and Jennifer Milbrandt, Strongsville City Forester, envisioned a multi-purpose, handicapped-accessible boardwalk/sidewalk that could be used by all residents to safely walk through the center of town, while also creating a destination location to honor local veterans. Senior citizens living in Westwood Place would have better access to the Ehrnfelt Senior Center, and a path would be provided from the Library to the Recreation Center, making the area much safer. Additionally, community residents and visitors could have a place to relax and enjoy the peace and serenity of the area. The overall vision included beautiful gardens to honor veterans, lighting for safety, and a gazebo for the enjoyment of all. Through the hard work of the Strongsville Service Department, and funded largely through private donations, Strongsville’s Freedom Trail was completed and dedicated in 2005. It is one of the largest veteran memorials in Ohio and acts as a timeline through history. Its mile-long trail features gardens that represent the wars in which Americans have fought and connects the City Commons with the Ehrnfelt Recreation and Senior Center. A directory of Strongsville’s war veterans is located in the Freedom Trail Gazebo. The gazebo is accessed via the “Walk of Valor,” a brick pathway engraved with the names of veterans from Strongsville, their branch of service, and the period of time or conflict they served. Today, many residents enjoy the Freedom Trail and gazebo for city events, weddings, and photo opportunities for special occasions. Just in time for its 20th anniversary in 2024, the Trail will receive upgrades and improvements as part of The Strongsville Town Center Enhancement and Walkability Initiative, making it more accessible and allowing various areas of the Town Center to connect. Access the Freedom Trail from Zverina Lane (off Pearl Road), Westwood Drive (off Pearl Road), or through the Greens of Strongsville Plaza (off Royalton Road).

There is no rush or pressure: The Toastmasters program allows you to progress at your own pace. Anyone who speaks during a meeting receives a hearty round of applause and spirited cheers. The environment in a Toastmasters club is friendly and supportive. Everyone at a meeting feels welcomed and valued — from complete beginners to advanced speakers. Encouragement and improvement go hand-in-hand. The Colorful Communicators Club meets Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m., at First Evangelical Church, 19419 Royalton Rd. For more information, contact Jolyn Redic, 440-665-4330, or visit www.tmstrongsville.toastmastersclubs.org.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION
Lots of Happy Campers
In 1947, the Cleveland Rotary Club, Cleveland Metroparks, and Achievement Centers for Children partnered to launch Camp Cheerful. The 52-acre campus in Strongsville became the first barrier-free residential camp in Ohio for individuals with disabilities. Over the decades, Camp Cheerful has modified and added services to meet the changing needs of individuals with disabilities. Today it is home to our River Rock Adult Day Program, Therapeutic Horsemanship Program, Adapted Sports, and our Camp Programs, which include a year-round weekend respite camp, and various day and overnight camps in the summer. We rely on hundreds of individual and corporate group
volunteers each year to help us with the upkeep of our Camp Cheerful campus. There are also opportunities for students looking to fulfill their service hours, including supporting our A Most Excellent Race event on June 23, 2024! To learn more, contact Meredith.demczyk@ achievementctrs.org, (440) 238-6200 ext. 246, or visit us online at www.achievementcenters.org
RECIPE
Apple Slaw They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and once you crunch on some Apple Slaw, you’ll be craving it daily – which is basically the same thing, right? It’s technically even better for you, too, because there’s nourishing cabbage, crunchy carrots, sweet red bell peppers, and fresh green onions mixed with the crispy red and Granny Smith apples. Covered in a creamy, sweet dressing, Apple Slaw will have you feeling fine and dandy! 3 cups cabbage, chopped 1 red apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped 1 Granny Smith apple, unpeeled, cored, and chopped 1 carrot, grated 1/2 cup red bell pepper, finely chopped 2 green onions, finely chopped 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1. In a large bowl, combine the cabbage, red apple, Granny Smith apple, carrot, red bell pepper, and green onion. 2. In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, brown sugar, and lemon juice. 3. Pour the dressing over the salad. 4. Serve.

Surrarrer Park has a new Story Book Trail thanks to Eagle Scout candidate Andrew Kunselman of Troop 701 in Strongsville. Kunselman’s project sought to bring to life a peaceful trail showcasing the story “The Animal Song” by musician and author Jonty Howly. Kunselman built the trail, spread the mulch, and erected eight weather-proof storyboards. The entrance sign to the trail is located behind the playground area. Follow the peaceful mulch path to encounter over 30 pages from “The Animal Song” across eight storyboards. The trail concludes at the zipline, located at the southern corner of the park. Ward 1 Councilman Jim Kaminski acted as Kunselman’s community representative, stating Andrew “did an outstanding job, exceeding expectations that were set for the project.” Surrarrer Park is located at 14625 Whitney Road and features a new ADA-compliant playground, as well as a baseball field, two tennis courts, and a pavilion.
Diversity, Inspiration and Theater Take Center Stage Strongsville Community Theatre has entertained audiences since 1995, with quality plays, musicals, and youth productions, showcasing local talent and educating students and adults in the theatrical arts. It awards special scholarships to SHS select seniors wishing to pursue a career in the performing arts. Through the years we have been fortunate to use the high school’s “Little Theater” as our venue. Presently, plans are in place to secure a more permanent “home.” Please stay tuned by visiting our website at www.strongsvillecommunitytheatre.com

COMMUNITY INFORMATION
Recognizing and Honoring Our Veterans
The Kiwanis Club of Strongsville is a service organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of the children of Strongsville. The Club celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2020. We are responsible for the wonderful American flag display at Town Square. Local businesses and private citizens sponsor a flag and secure a sign on every national holiday. The Kiwanis Club uses these monies to fund our high school scholarship program and other projects in the community. Other such projects include: • Adopt A Family - Kiwanis gives “cash gift cards” to needy families in the community. • Memory Bags - a bag of age-appropriate support items for grieving students. • Read Around the World a reading promotion event for preschoolers through 2nd graders. • Finally, our Club just pledged $20,000 to the downtown Strongsville enhancement project. A few years ago, we began to hoist the six flags of the United States Armed Forces. This includes Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Our Club looks for every opportunity to recognize and honor our Veterans.
These unique flags can be viewed on the southeast corner of Pearl and Rt. 82 behind the brick wall. Interestingly enough, there is an Order of Precedence based on the seniority of the services. The year of origin of each branch is a factor in seniority: Army-1775 (June); Marine Corps-1775 (Oct.); Navy-1775 (Nov.); Air Force-1939 (Sept.); Space Force-2019 (Dec.); and the Coast Guard-(1790). The Coast Guard is not considered a military branch but a military service subservient to the Navy. This Order was determined by the Department of Defense on October 31, 1977. This determines the order displayed from left to right of the Flags when hoisted on flag poles, when appearing in a parade, or when hung on a wall. Of course, when the flag of the United States of America is displayed with these six flags, it should be larger and flown higher. Kiwanis members, like many of Strongsville’s citizens, enjoy the regimentation found in our military. Our Club is very proud of the United States of America! When you join us at our monthly meeting on the second Wednesday of each month, don’t be surprised when we begin the session with the Pledge of Allegiance. We gather at the Strongsville Senior Center at 6:30 p.m. Medicare • Healthcare • Life • Supplemental
