Editor’s Note WELCOME TO IMAGES ASIA! One of the best things about being an Editor at Images Asia is the opportunity to learn the life stories of those we feature.
There are many awesome stories of heroism on TV or even social media, but for every single story mentioned, there are hundreds more that remain unsaid. In my years of Images Asia, I have been continually surprised at the depth and breadth of a person we featured. They are so much more than just beautiful or handsome people. They are heroes in their own right. People who have stood up for what they believe in, or we’re knocked down more times than they can remember, but got up again and again. It truly is a humbling experience to see the power of the human spirit.
Many times, it came to the point that their beauty faded in comparison to what they did and continue to do in life. Then the challenge for me is to convey their stories in a manner that does justice to their struggles and achievements. So like one of our featured personalities, Enzo Williams, we tell the story of how they transformed their lives to become the larger than life people they are today. The privilege to know their story has enriched my own life as I hope it will do yours as you read through the story of their lives.

YAMANI CALIWARA A Dazzling International Woman of Style, Beauty and Substance
Certain professions make the professional practicing them, the best indicator of how good that professional is. For professional stylists, it doesn’t get much better than Yamani Caliwara. She is the epitome of style and grace exuding beauty and confidence. One look at her and clients know that they are in the right place indeed. Many other people and organizations agree. In fact, just this November 2016 at Sofitel Manila, she was given the Paul Harris Award for charity works, beauty, style and fashion. This year she was also awarded the 2017 Philippines Best Dressed, cementing even further her mastery of her art. . Just this August 2, 2017, Yamani was inducted into the Soroptimist International as part of the SI Congressional New Generation. As an organization that aims to create programs with the purpose of improving the lives of women and girls through social and economic empowerment, Yamani will most definitely be a big asset to the Soroptimist International.

Looking beautiful, fashionable and stylish comes naturally to Yamani. Even her interests, activities and collections revolve around what she does for a living. She is perennially interested in beauty, fashion and styling plus she collects dresses! There certainly is no doubt that Yamani is doing exactly what she loves. While she is certainly up to date with the latest style and trends, her personal fashion style is, in one word, classic. She prefers outfits that are simple, timeless and business-like which she matches with high heels, topped with perfect hair and make-up. The fact that she admires Grace Kelly the most says a lot about Yamani because Grace Kelly was the poster girl of style and her style lives on today in the classic style that Yamani loves the most.
IMAGESASIA 9
A very well respected professional international stylist, Yamani is the person behind the success of the House of Yamani and Yamani Beauty Care Inc. Her flagship business, House of Yamani boasts of a team of highly trained and skilled international hair dressers, make-up artists and wardrobe specialists. House of Yamani has two branches, one in Beverly Hills USA and the other in Rockwell, Makati Philippines. On the other hand, Yamani Beauty Care Inc. handles the Yamani Make-up line which is experiencing record growth. All these ventures are purely Yamani’s alone and it speaks volumes about her determination and will to succeed. This innate drive to achieve and blaze her own trail seems to run in her family. Her grandfather Cesar A. Caliwara who in 1972, while serving as president of the Philippines Association of Civil Engineers (PACE), was able to unite PACE with another organization Philippine Society of Civil Engineers (PSCE) thus unifiying all Civil Engineers in both private and public sectors in one organization the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers Inc., which was duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission. On February 1974, in its first election of officers, Engineer Cesar Caliwara became the very first President of PICE Inc. The brother of Cesar Caliwara is Eladio A. Caliwara who served as the Governor of Quezon Province from 1981 to 1986. Around 1984, Cesar the grandfather of Yamani joined the QCRB or the Quezon Capital Rural Bank and because of him, she is a stockholder of the bank as well. Today, Yamani is in charge of the stocks, lands and inheritance from her grandparents. This is no mean feat because those who have experienced the painfuil process of handling estates know that it’s a rat maze of complicated procedures and paper chasing.
IMAGESASIA 10
Both her children have likewise inherited this passion to succeed and are excelling in their studies. Daughter Heather is a straight A (100%) student in all of her subjects in Beverly Hills High School in the US. Her younger sister Kylie will be studying in the US this August. Speaking of school, Yamani took her grade school and high school studies in Maryknoll College. Then for college she went to Assumption College and graduated with an AB in Interior Design. Later in 2009 she enrolled in Franck Provost School for Cosmetology. Then just this 2017, she graduated from the course Styling in Style at the Style 2020 Academy in Los Angeles California USA. As a lifelong achiever, Yamani has so many memorable experiences in her life. As early as high school, her bewitching beauty brought many offers for commercials and print ads. This was her introduction to the world of style and glamour. While being beautiful and alluring came naturally to Yamani, it was also an early sign that she would enter this world in another capacity and turn into a very lucrative and fulfilling career. After high school, she tried theater for 2 years in Assumption College. Then she joined the Assumption College Tour in Europe in 1998, 2001 and 2003 providing her with invaluable life experiences and it also fuelled her passion for travel. The birth of her babies count as among the most precious of her memorable experiences in life. Then there were all those business related tours to places like London, Laos, Cambodia, Macau and Las Vegas. She remembers fondly the time when she had provided uniforms and took on styling projects at the Solaire Resort and Casino as well as at the Kiwa Solaire. She also carried out and completed similar uniform and styling projects in Laos and Cambodia which reinforced her reputation as a stylist of international caliber.
IMAGESASIA 11
She has a deep love for travelling and cherishes each trip for the learning experiences each of them provide in culture, food and history of a place. Yamani is quite well traveled and has visited practically all the states in the West Coast and she has gone around a big part of Europe as well. She has been to Paris, London, Lourdes, Florence, Italy and Spain among other places. She has pretty much covered Asia as well having been to Thailand, Macau, Bangkok, Cambodia and Hongkong. Here in the Philippines she loved her trips to Boracay and Dakak. She enjoys traveling the most when it’s with her kids or her family and it’s something that she has had the pleasure of doing on most of her travels.
IMAGESASIA 12
Yamani sees herself as a woman with strong and high values. At same time, she is a family oriented person who is helpful and supportive of others. Her guiding principles are to be firm with your values, always focus, move forward, aim high and don’t let anyone bring you down. It is without a doubt that these principles have served her well and have brought her happiness, success and recognition. Expect to hear more about Yamani as her businesses become forces to reckon with in the world of style and glamour.

When people learn you are going to Antipolo, the first thing that comes to their mind would be the Church where vehicles are usually brought to be blessed. Other’s might think of cashew or maybe even the row of restaurants popularized by Eagles Nest on Sumulong. To most people, it’s a day trip or a venue to chill before going home. For most, its certainly not a spot for an overnight or weekend getaway. Things have changed a lot because Antipolo has just the place that’s perfect for either of these. In fact Antipolo is so near to most of Metro Manila that it can even be considered a staycation.

Luljetta’s Hanging Gardens and Spa has long been a well-kept secret among its clients. But with social media, it was only a matter of time before the word got out. After all the only other place that might be considered close to Luljettas is located on another mountain in San Mateo, and while they have bigger grounds, they are exclusive, being a members only place. And their prices are quite steep. Luljetta’s on the other hand has reasonable prices, a great variety of food and no memberships are required. This place is all about spending quality time with the family or with your significant other. They have packages that specifically cater to these niches and the feedback from their clients is overwhelmingly positive. In fact, a cursory search on Youtube reveals that quite a number of video bloggers have made the trek out here and if their videos are any indication, they all had a great time. The most popular activity for couples here seems to be the spa and massage therapies while the families enjoy the different pools, basking in nature and exploring the whole cluster which has a lot to offer the kids. One common thread among the reviews is that the staff at Luljetta’s and their other companions in the cluster have excellent customer service. Another high point is the food. Guests to the Spa and video bloggers all make special mention of the taste of most if not all dishes. Prices are deemed reasonable as well. .
IMAGESASIA 17
They have Garden Suites that are roomy and well appointed. As far as facilities go, you can spend the day lazing in one of their many pools, rejuvenate at the spa, have a steam bath, a rain shower massage, linger in the jacuzzi or just hang out in its many places where you can enjoy drinks, snacks while enjoying the cool breeze and the awesome views that Antipolo has to offer.
One of the goals of the owners of Luljettas was to showcase Philippine architecture. So they filled Luljetta’s with furniture from all over the Philippines and those acquired during their travels through Southeast Asia. Consequently, each of the different parts of Luljettas give one the feeling that they have travelled to another country. The biggest attraction of Luljetta is that it manages to compress, a wide range of activities into its spacious grounds. You get great views, a wide variety of massage options geared especially for couples, steam baths, jacuzzis, hydro massage and more. s.
IMAGESASIA 18 You get two different kinds of ambiance here. In daytime, you can explore the grounds of the whole cluster and enjoy the different types of pools while enjoying the views of the mountains and Laguna Lake, the general ambiance is like Puerto Azul during its heyday, with the lake view replacing the ocean views with a side trip to the farm. In the evening, you get a Baguio type of vibe with the cool air and glistening city lights seemingly transporting you to another place. Being able to have a getaway that is just 1 ½ hours from the farthest part of Metro Manila (Paranaque) and barely 20 minutes from the closest part (Marikina) is quite a treat. But Luljettas takes it a step further and makes you feel as though you are really far away. Then when you arrive here, it’s like a do-it-yourself vacation. You can opt to have an active weekend and enjoy the pools, hiking, climbing up and down through the sprawling grounds. Or you can have a recharging type of weekend where you can have massages, scrubs, steam baths and everything else a spa has to offer. Or you can make it a retreat / retrospective weekend and enjoy peace and quiet while taking in the beautiful mountain views in the day and enjoy gazing upon the vast expanse of city lights that is so conducive for reflecting and getting in touch with our inner selves.
Being a lot of things to a lot of people while doing an excellent job of it is not an easy task but Luljetta’s deliver

MENCHU VB ARANDILLA The Art of Painting, Leading and Staying Glamorous Menchu Arandilla has always been used to taking charge of situations in order to make things happen. Being the pioneer in a field is something that she takes on readily, unlike others who prefer to take the more travelled path.
IMAGESASIA 22
In her youth, Menchu was consistently the class president AND she was consistently the recipent of the “most helpful award. These were the tell tales signs that Menchu was destined for greater things. This drive to take charge is what influenced her to choose Imelda Marcos as the person she admires the most. She commends Imelda for her fine taste, elegance and leadership. After graduating from PWU College of Fine Arts, Major in Painting she was able to join the Tuesday Group which was founded by National Artist Dean Jose Joya. Menchu was first female AND the youngest lifetime director of the group. She also joined the Art Association of the Philippines or AAP where she stayed for 10 years. During this time, she worked up from PR officer, to senior director and finally as Vice President. She left AAP and founded the United Womens Art Association of the Philippines or UWAAP which to her is one of the highest points of her life to date. Other memorable experiences she recounts fondly include the time that she had a successful solo exhibited which was supported by several well known personalities. For Menchu, it marked the beginning of her career as an independent artist. Being able to hold exhibits in various parts of the Philippines and abroad was a momentous moment for her. No less memorable, was seeing her artworks featured in several different coffee table books, magazines and newspapers. Menchu is truly focused on her craft and her current interests and activities revolve almost exclusively around two things, artworks and community service, mainly through the Rotary Club. But when it comes to collections, Menchu collects arts exclusively. She is very proud of her vast collection of paintings that include several different and well known masters, as well as her own paintings. She also has an impressive collection of antique jars. Unlike her more eccentric counterparts, Menchu has a fashion style that is flexible and appropriate for the moment. She prefers to use long gowns for formal occassions while for her daily wear, its smart casual. Other occasions would depend mostly on her mood.
IMAGESASIA 22
IMAGESASIA 23
In what seems to be the trend among glamorous women today, Menchu credits her positive outlook in life as largely responsible for her beauty. She eschews unproductive and negative people and cirsumstances. Solitude is no problem for her and she prefers that over crowds. Menchu describes her character as being extreme with militple personalities. She is unpredictable but sees herself as a kind, straightforward but soft hearted to those in need. So if it were up to her, what works best is spending quality time with an intimate group of friends who get her and who she knows would always be there for her.
She does make it a point to work out at the gym at least 2x, preferably 3x. But the one thing that she cannot live without when she steps out of her house is her signature red lipstick and eyebrows. Menchu is a strong believer in making the most out of every moment and her philosphy in life reflects this. For her, one must simply enjoy the day and live life to the fullest. Despite having many achievements under her belt already, Menchu still has two very important goals that she would like to attain. One is to have a gallery just for UWAAP and the future generations in order to continue the arts. And the second is build a home for the aged and homeless children and offer free education for the less fortunate. Noble goals indeed and this country would be that much better if Menchu is able to reach her goals.

THE GLASS BAR AT CRESCENT MOON Photographed by DEXTY MN ISAIAH GERMILLO JASON WASSDORP
The Crescent Moon Café was opened in January 1997 and was a well kept secret among its loyal customers. But like many secrets, the word got around and soon the Crescent Moon Café became a popular destination in Antipolo. From its humble beginnings, the Crescent Moon Café became THE place to go to when one wanted to unwind from the stress of city life. Some came to marvel at the handmade stoneware ceramics while others came for the delicious, scrumptious Southeast Asian themed fusion food. Because It seemed that artistic, creative energy flowed from somewhere within the Crescent Moon Café grounds, it also became a hub for artists all over the Philippines and the world to recharge, reconnect and find inspiration for and in their craft.
IMAGESASIA 27
Because of this, in August 2016, the owners of Crescent Moon decided to create a place whose express purpose was to allow people to tap the creative energy that was just overflowing from the Crescent Moon and provide them with a space where they could let their creative juices flow. Thus, the Glass Bar was born.
Understanding the nature and needs of artists, the Glass Bar offers coffee, juices, and smoothies, and local craft beer. It is both a creative space and a watering hole that aimed to allow artists to rediscover their creativity. In the process, it has also allowed people to discover and free their inner artists and creativity. Then it took the creative space a step further and provided a venue for artists to share their knowledge and passion in order to inspire others and to help them find their artistic selves. Past creative and hands-on workshops include pottery, drawing and painting, calligraphy, photography, terrarium making, healthy smoothie making, bike mechanics, silk screening, animals on stones painting, sewing, mosaic, and a two-week culinary course for kids and teens. Workshops are offered all year round, with packages for school trips, office team building sessions, and barkada outings available upon request.

THE LIST THE BUCKET BUCKET LIST By: ALEXIS CRUZ By: ALEXIS CRUZ
Cruises usually find their way sooner or later to bucket lists. It seems that there is something about cruises that make a reward for a life well lived. There are however, those who are a bit queasy about ocean cruises (like yours truly), or just simply have no inclination to spend more time at sea than on land. Enter the river cruise. From the name, these cruises pass almost exclusively through the rivers allowing for a more relaxed and scenic cruise. Let me share with you one particular river cruise that is on my bucket list.
Images courtesy of http://www.scenic.com.au/ The Scenic River Cruises offer several cruise options across the world. In my case, it has always been my dream to travel through Europe with my family at a more leisurely pace compared to package tours thus allowing us to appreciate the sights, sounds, smells, food and drinks along the way. Initially I was looking at the houseboat rental option but there were just too many variables to consider. So imagine my surprise when I saw the offerings of Scenic. It seemed as though they had read my mind and had practically everything on my list and more. To give you an idea about why I am so gung ho about this, here’s a sampling of their cruises that I have my eye on. Note that while Scenic offers cruises from 8 days to as long as 21 days, my interest is on what I hope to be at least a 30 day European vacation. So I decided that I would combine 2 cruises, a 15 day and a 16 day cruise in this case so we could maximize our dream European tour and spend a blissful 31 days travelling. Cruise 1 is the “Jewels of Europe” 15 day cruise which goes from Amsterdam to Budapest. Its listed at 2,595 British pounds per person, or about 173,000 pesos.
IMAGESASIA 29
Cruise 2 is the “South of France Indulgence, a 16 day tour which takes you from Chalon-sur-Saone through the south of France stopping at numerous wine regions, castles, palaces and quaint villages. This one is priced at 4,295 British pounds per person or about 286,000 pesos. That would bring the total cost per person to 460,000.
