Raffy Garcia THE MAN FOR OTHERS

Editor’s Note Welcome to this special issue of Images Asia! This edition is quite a treat because of the variety of the people featured within. All of them have such depth and richness in their lives that by showcasing their lives, they impart a gift to those who read about them. Because in one way or another, they are able to evoke in us this feeling that we are kindred spirits and inside each of us, we have what it takes to create similar successes in our own lives. Our vivacious cover girl Malou Martinez is a glamorous example of how hard work can lead to success beyond our wildest dreams. A serial entrepreneur since she was 18, Malou just kept going from one successful business to another. All this while being a total success in love and family as well. If there is one person who seems to have more than 24 hours in her day, its Malou. The very dignified and wildly successful Raffy Garcia is the epitome of overachievement. Where most of us would be happy to master one sport, Raffy engaged and mastered FOUR and garnered awards in each of them. This zeal to go that extra mile (100 miles in Raffy’s case) has also brought him epic success in the world of IT earning him the nickname ―Mr. Computer‖. Upon retiring from the business world, instead of relaxing, he just refocused his substantial energy on Rotary Club activities thus benefitting countless people through his countless projects. So there you have it, a short teaser about what you will read inside this issue. Despite the variety of endeavors, values, backgrounds and other areas of diversity, there is one thing they have in common. They all serve as inspiration to others. They all worked hard to achieve their success and they show us that it can be done regardless of your current status, situation or problems. They also achieve all this, while not losing sight of the most important things in life. Perhaps then it is fitting to close this welcome note with this quote from Kasey Kasem, a renowned DJ and host who was quite popular in the 70s and 80s. He always ended his shows with this: ―Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars‖

Happy Reading!

RAFFY GARCIA The Man For Others

In the world we live in today, it’s quite rare to encounter individuals whose hearts remain pure, and have a strong sense of what it means to be the anchor in the lives of many. It’s uncommon to meet people who are the embodiment of selflessness, kindness, and leadership. The majority of today’s jaded, modern society normally wouldn’t show the said traits, which is why meeting such an extraordinary personality truly leaves a significant impact on one’s life. Luckily for us Filipinos, rare as these persons are, there is one particular individual that defines all of what is being said. Rafael “Raffy” Garcia III stands tall as a prime example of a man for others, and a natural born leader. Proudly Atenean, Raffy studied in Ateneo de Manila University for his grade school and high school years (1957-1961). Here, he was an all-around athlete for he was a champion boxer, golfer, co-captain of the track and field team and even the captain of the football team during his time. Not only that, but he was also the adjutant of the PMT (Preparatory Military Training). But despite all of these activities, he still managed to be featured in Hi-Lites, the newsletter of the ADMU High school. He was touted to be the ONLY Man About Town on Campus, the meaning of which escapes Raffy to this day.

Ever the overachiever, upon graduating from high school, he went on to take Electrical Engineering, Economics, Mathematics and Computer Science studies at Washington State University, and did his management studies at the Asian Institute of Management, University of Asia and the Pacific, and the Kellogg School of management. After joining YPO (Young Presidents Organization) as one of its youngest members in 1979 and proving his capabilities of excelling as a leader, Raffy retired in 1994 due to age, and was then invited to join YPO Gold (Formerly known as WPO or World Presidents Organization) the graduate organization for overage members, where he has been a lifetime member of YPO Gold ever since his retirement. Displaying his usual zeal for taking on seemingly daunting tasks for mere mortals, Raffy just forged ahead and participated in two globetrotting forums. The first was The Global Couple Forum 10, which he describes as a group composed of couples from all over the world, meeting in the preferred area of the group three times every two years. As for the second group, it is The Regional Forum 3 which is made up of members that come from Singapore, Pakistan, India, Austria, and the Philippines, planning meetings usually every quarter in the area of the region hosted by one of their members. It seemed though that all these were just preludes to the main organization in waiting which was the Rotary Club. After joining the Rotary Club of Pasig in 1971, Raffy was a RINO (Rotarian in Name Only) for the next 35 years. Then in 2006, he became the Rotary Club’s club president, and was later appointed the district governor of Rotary International District 3800 in 2011. In 2016, he was elected as a director and member of the Rotary International Board to serve in Rotary Year 20182020. Through his incredible work ethic and selflessness, Raffy has the honorable distinction being the ninth Filipino to serve on the Rotary International Board after fellow Filipinos, namely Carlos P. Romulo, Gene Puyat, Paco Delgado, Mat Caparas, and Paeng Hechanova.

IMAGESASIA 9

His work in the Rotary is a testament to the purity of Raffy’s heart and his being a true man for others. In his own words, ―Service to Humanity is the rent that we pay for the life that we were given on this earth!‖ an eloquent statement indeed. It is second only to Raffy putting his words into action as far as showcasing his humanity is concerned. Is it any wonder then that when Raffy was asked what his most memorable experiences in life were, he would, without hesitation, refer to his Rotary moments? One of the first Rotary moments he recalled was when he participated in a National Immunization Day in India during the time of its Polio Plus Campaign. He described the scenario as akin to playing God, for it was him that decided who would be crippled for life and who would not undergo such circumstances. But because of all his efforts, India, one of the most populated continents in the world, is currently polio free. Today only 3 countries in the world have the polio virus: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria.

IMAGESASIA 10 His second most memorable experience was when he and his companions were distributing free cataract operations to those in need. ―It was fantastic seeing people’s lives change when they could see again, and would no longer be dependent on others. I literally cried‖, was Raffy’s initial thoughts on the event. Another instance was when he met a school teacher and discovered that she had a lump in her breast during a routine medical dental mission. He paid all the expenses for her lumpectomy and the teacher was deeply grateful to Raffy for saving her life.

But his drive to help those in needs was not limited to his Rotary work, for he seemed to have been born with this innate urge to help others on his own initiative. In fact, Raffy is known as ―Chairman‖ in his Ateneo class for the way he takes care of his classmates whose financial situations have turned south. Specifically, he finances their medical bills, electrical bills, rent, and even tuition requirements of the children and grandchildren of his classmates that have fallen victim to financial difficulties. The same goes for the street-children in Cebu and poor Muslim scholars in Davao; for he provided for their needs when they lacked the funds to simply eat one regular meal a day. He also assisted in the rebuilding and re-establishment of Ateneo de Tuguegarao along with the help of philanthropist Dado Banatao. But sadly, they had to abandon the project due to the passing of the project’s founder, Father Manny Non SJ. Such altruism and more has resulted in Raffy being nicknamed the ―Mr. Arch Klumph‖ in the Philippines for being the highest giving Filipino to the Rotary Foundation, where he truly embodies the essence of selflessness and humility. But there is so much more to Raffy because he has proven himself an incredible leader and founder. In the 70’s, he had been nicknamed ―Mr. Computer‖ for being one of the pioneers of IT in the Philippines during the 60’s and the 70’s. He eventually created his conglomerate compared of 44 high tech companies after he had purchased Summa Computer Services Corporation from the Herdis Group in 1982. In fact, a number of these companies are largely behind the improvement in the systems of government organizations such as the Land Transportation Office Driver License System, and the National bureau of Investigation Clearance Processing system and were even cited and recognized during a number of SONA’s.

IMAGESASIA 11

Raffy and his companies have demonstrated their corporate excellence worldwide operating lotto and other lotteries and gaming systems in countries like Romania, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam in Asia Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, and Gabon in Africa. They also license internet casino games to operators in Costa Rica, Bolivia and Spain. Raffy’s drive to excel in the area of business is inspired in part, by the stories of a select group of individuals that he looks up to. In business, some of his idols include icons of industry namely Washington Sycip, Bobby Ongpin, and Oscar Lopez. All of them built business empires that encompass many generations. In fact, Raffy considers himself lucky enough to have had the opportunity to work with all of them. Among Raffy’s generation, he idolizes Robbie and Ricky Delgado, Rico Tantoco, and Manny Pangilinan. He states that they are quiet but strong businessmen who have developed strategic businesses that have contributed massively to the Philippine economy. But despite all of the demands inherent to Raffy’s profession, he still manages to live out one of the philosophies in life, ―I live for the moment. I listen to my body and make sure I don’t over exert myself. If I’m tired, I rest. If I’m hungry, I eat. But most importantly, I enjoy myself. I don’t like worrying, so I don’t.‖ Despite all his responsibilities, Raffy ensures that they do not run him into the ground. On a lighter note and in relation to his travelling experience, Raffy has practically been all over the world because his business gives him the opportunities to fly over Asia, the Pacific, Europe, South America, and USA. But sadly, he never has the opportunity to actually enjoy the scenery of the places he goes to due to the fact that his travels were mostly for business. For Raffy, the best places he has been to abroad include Cappadocia and Goreme in Turkey, the Austrian Alps over Salzburg, and the majestic jungles of the mainland portion of Equatorial Guinea, which include the magical 5 star hotel of President Theodore Obiiang in his hometown of Mongomo. Of course, Raffy has a particular favorite area in our breathtaking motherland, the Island of Golo, Looc found in the Lubang island group. He states that hundreds of string ray nest in the shallow waters in a quiet little cove on this island, and is truly a fantastic sight.

IMAGESASIA 12

As for his fashion sense, Raffy enjoys the idea of being casual, and decided to dive right into the style that had been introduced by President Duterte. This would include outfits such as the MaongBarong, and the Maong-Merkana combination. In fact, he is so comfortable with being casual that he supports the idea of combining rubber shoes with formal wear during semi-formal occasions. With that being said, he owns a large collection of Sketchers Go walks. ―Great for the feet!‖ he exclaims. However, due to his responsibilities in Rotary, he is often forced to forego casual wear in favor of formal monkey suits majority of the time. Fortunately, he is able to keep up with this for he owns more than 20 suits, 15 sport coats, and another 10 tuxedos. Of course, Raffy’s youthful good looks surely have a secret behind it, and his secret to keeping a slim figure and having gorgeous looks is eating a very little amount of rice (half a table spoon with a meal), and to avoid soft drinks and any sugary drinks. When it comes to collections, Raffy states that he is not really a collector of anything. He does own a wide selection of cars, but this is only because he is not fond of selling anything he owns. He purchases pieces of art, but says that his children usually take what they want when they come to visit. Speaking of his children, Raffy is a devoted father and grandfather, Raffy has four children and eight grandchildren. Their eldest, Susanna Garcia ―Nana‖ Guzman studied in St. Paul’s Pasig for her early education, and then went to St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, the Christian Brothers School in San Francisco Bay Area. To finish her education, she went to the Arthur D. Little School of Business in Boston for her MBA. Now, Nana is the Chief Financial Officer of the Mega Group.

IMAGESASIA 13

She is married to Nick Guzman, a dentist/orthodontist and they have three fantastic children. Mariel, the eldest, is currently a junior at Brandeis University. Manuel (aka Manu) is graduating high school from the Ateneo de Manila University where he is a star athlete, scholar, and a popular singer. Marcel, the youngest, is also graduating from junior high school from the Ateneo de Manila University where he takes after his older brother for is also an athlete, scholar, and singer. Their second child, Maria Antonia Romina ―Minnie‖ Garcia North is married to Paul Narth, an IT brain in Silicon Valley. They currently live in San Carlos CA, with their miracle baby, Kieron. Minnie was six months pregnant with Kieron when she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. She refused to abort Kieron and delivered him full-term, even when her lymphoma was already at stage 4 and had reached her brain. That was the only time she had her lymphoma treatment. ―But God is good‖, Raffy exclaims, for she is now 8 years in full remission. Minnie went to elementary school also at St. Paul’s Pasig just like her sister Nana, and then continued her studies in Carondelet in Concord CA where she graduated high school with honors afterwards. Then, she did her studies in Biology at the University of California in Davis. Their only son, Rafael A. ―Ramy‖ Garcia IV, studied in La Salle Greenhills for his high school years. There, he led the Makati Football Club to the football championships of the Helsinki Cup and the Gothia Cup in Europe, as the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the team along with Santi Araneta. He then did his college studies in Menlo College in Atherton, CA. Today, he is the president of the Mega Group of Companies. Ramy is married to Djoanna Pineda, who runs her own manpower company. They have a handsome son of his Raffy’s namesake, Rafael P. Garcia V, who is a student at the Ateneo de Manila University.

IMAGESASIA 14

Their youngest, Ana Maria Katrina Garcia ―Katkat‖ Diaz finished her high school years at Carondelet in Concord CA, and then went to various places to study certain specialties. She went to Engelburg Switzerland to take up Swiss hotel, Waterloo at the Schiller University to take up hotel and restaurant management, Florida to take up international business, and finally Paris to do her MBA at the Ecole Especial Commercial de Paris. KatKat is married to Paolo Diaz, a sports program coordinator for Solar Sports. They have three wonderful children: Santino, Andrea, and Giselle. Their mom, Minda Acacio Garcia finished her BS Commerce from Far Eastern University (FEU) and her MBA from the University of San Francisco. Enjoying a truly blessed life, Raffy says ―I am lucky because God loves me. He has always watched over me, and directed my entire life. I am what I am only because of Him!‖ And in the eyes of the people around him, he lives his philosophy not only through his words, but in his actions as well. Throughout his life, he has portrayed exactly what it means to be a man for others, and a true natural born leader. He has poured his heart and soul into every single aspect in his journey, and has helped a tremendous amount of other individuals. Raffy states that he has reached the mountain top and that he hopes to be able to account for everything that the good Lord gave to him and to show that he used them well, and made the best use of them by helping his fellowmen. To those countless people for whom Raffy is a man of kindness, selflessness, leadership, and a man for others, the answer is a resounding YES.

ANNABELLE PAPAS

HER CUP OF LIFE RUNNETH OVER

When asked about having the luxury of time, most people today would likely say that this is something they no longer have. They feel that they can no longer stop to smell the roses in life and are no longer able to enjoy it for what it really is. A dissenting voice whoever rings out from this lover of life, fighter, and beauty, Annabelle Papas. For she is truly an exception serving as a role model in living life to the fullest despite everything all the demands of life on her. Annabelle spent her early years of studying abroad in Zion Lutheran School, Glendale California USA, and in the International School of Manila (ISM), where she demonstrated in both institutions how a Filipina can tackle challenges just as well as foreigners can. She spent her later years of education in Assumption College (AC), to take up BS Interior Design and then moving to IAME (International Academy of Management and Economics), to expand her knowledge by taking up BS Business Management, and MA Business Administration.

But it was during her youth when Annabelle began to show how much of an overachiever she really is. To start off with, she proved that girls truly do have excellent athletic capabilities, for she was a varsity player in 3 sports: Volleyball, rowing, and table tennis, where she rose up as the champion in all of them. She was also in the same team with China Cojuangco in soccer (First Assumption College Soccer Team). But her reign of victory did not stop there. She demonstrated her mastery of the English language when she became the spelling bee champion in her time. Not only that, but she was both a debate contender, and a contributing writer to her school newspaper. With all that being said, it is definitely safe to say that throughout her youth Annabelle already proved that she possesses both the brains and the brawn. Annabelle is a natural born leader, and her talents were recognized for she was invited to be a part of the Asia Pacific Fuel Handler's Inc. "The only impossible journey, is the one you never begin.", an outlook by Tony Robbins, and a philosophy that Annabelle believes in and demonstrates in her profession many years later when she and her late husband formed their own company, one which she currently runs, Maximus Trading Inc. Their company specializes in serving land fuel consumption such as diesel, bunker, liquefied petroleum gas, used oil, lubes, etc. Her corporate savvy speaks for itself in the way her company penetrated the petroleum industry and has thus been acquainted with some of the most outstanding businessmen, and business owners in various industries across land, air and sea.

According to Annabelle, receiving the opportunity to experience all of what is being said has truly helped her grow and acquire new knowledge and skills.

Knowing how demanding her life is, one has to ask how Annabelle stays incredibly gorgeous despite having so much on her plate. Her first secret to staying beautiful is one of a kind. She states that window shopping keeps you walking, and that you even do a little charity work unconsciously if you decide to purchase an item. Her other physical activities like yoga, dance aerobics, and swimming are also effective ways to stay sexy. But one important technique she developed, is keeping negative people out of your life for this is sure to prevent wrinkles.

Location: LULJETTA’S HANGING GARDENS & SPA

IMAGESASIA 19 There's a saying that goes "Tell me who your friends are, and I'll tell you who you are.", but in the case of Annabelle, it would be ―tell me who you idolize and I’ll tell you who you are. Annabelle admires 3 famous personalities, Grace Kelly, Princess Diane, and Angelina Jolie. It is no surprise that she idolizes these 3 beautiful and strong women, because Annabelle herself exudes the same beauty. Excellence in the world of business and leadership runs in Annabelle's family. The first example is her supportive father and hero, Philip Masinsin, who accumulated his success by working at a young age and started his own company in the 70's, where he too penetrated in the customs and trading industry which pioneered strategies correlated to bringing in or importing luxury cars, motor parts, and accessories among the list of imports. Today, he is the owner of Philmacor Enterprises Inc., Philmacor Customs Brokerage Inc., PVM Motors, and various other business ventures on dealing with land and properties. Annabelle also mentions how she assists Philip in managing his company, and is currently preparing herself to embrace the management and operations of the company in order to continue the legacy he had built. She also states that doing so is an activity that she aims to accomplish in life, for it is her way of giving thanks and gratitude to her dad for constantly working his heart out 24/7 so that he can provide a comfortable lifestyle for her and her siblings. Another example is her uncle, Dan Masinsin, who is currently doing a fine job as the Mayor of Pilillia Rizal, a first class urban municipality. Other prime examples among Annabelle's many friends in politics and business industries, would be her god mother and god father that have been very close family friends ever since the 80's, the late Sen. Miriam Santiago and husband Jun. But not only Annabelle and her family are hardworking and successful, because most importantly, they are a beautiful family that is incredibly loving. She is a devoted mother to her three children, namely Marcus Philip McLaren, Mikaela Francesca Dominique, and Maximus Maximillian Brabus, all of whom are students in De La Salle Canlubang, one of the Philippines' finest schools. "They all possess a character of their own, but all with sweetness and impeccable charm", a heartwarming statement coming from the mother that they take after. In fact, Annabelle is a very selfless and generous role model to her children, who counts as one of her most memorable experiences the time when she gave food to a family of 5 along a sidewalk. She narrates how thankful they were for her act of kindness, showing their gratitude with the sheer teary gaze in their eyes. IT struck a chord deep within her heart and right there and then, Annabelle made a promise to herself to do this again and again, and has never failed to do so in her free time ever since.

IMAGESASIA 20

Annabelle values quality time with her family, she believes that families that do so, are the ones that carry the strongest bonds. And, according to her, their most memorable moments together are the ones that they created abroad during their travels. In fact, they are quite fond of traveling for they have been to San Francisco, LA, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, New York, Tokyo, Hawaii, and the list goes on and on! But Disneyland, Universal Studios, and Magic Mountain were among her favorite. However, Annabelle's favorite memory of traveling with her family was when they had arrived in Hawaii by accident, due to the plane encountering an engine trouble and resulted in having to land in the nearest landing site. Luckily, their airline had given a free two days hotel accommodation to all passengers so that they may relax until the plane's engine was up to speed. But at the end of the day, her and her family ended up not boarding the plan and extending their stay in Hawaii because Annabelle's mother very much enjoyed the scenic views in Honolulu.

IMAGESASIA 21

"A sound mind, makes a sound body", a universal truth known to the world today. Although scenic views may allow one to have a sound mind, Annabelle has her own unique ways in achieving such a state despite all of what is being asked of her. She regularly attends recollections in order to gain spiritual strength and knowledge by being spiritually inclined. Furthermore, she practices the relaxing activity of yoga, and states that she favors Bikram and Aerial. She is also a skilled archer, and states that archery is a skill worth the still force and silence. Annabelle also takes interest in other activities, both thrilling and slow paced. First off, she occasionally goes horseback riding from time to time, and is even a go kart racing enthusiast, saying that she loves watching, racing, and doing what she does best, winning. She is a fan of the arts, specifically poetry and literature and favors poets such as Edgar Allan Poe, and William Shakespeare. Asked about her fashion style, she describes her style as modern, sophisticated, sexy, but elegant and classic Having a good taste in arts and being a work of art herself, Annabelle also possesses an incredible taste in fashion, and shows it in her collection of branded bags and accessories like Gucci, Channel, Louise Vuitton, and Armani. Her collection is worth quite a lot now and fortunately, she received all of them as gifts from relatives and friends. On a more serious note, Annabelle has gone through many hardships in life. Her beautiful mother had passed away due to cancer almost three years ago, and she herself had helped as many people as she could just like her daughter. Her husband, who was struck by kidney failure at the age of 36, had fought hard and battled through dialysis. Heartbreakingly, he was cheated in his sleep by a cardiac arrest while he was on dialysis. Her two loving dogs, Logan, a Siberian husky, and Reese, a Shih Tzu, had both died of heat stroke in the 2 months before the passing of her husband. Despite all these tragedies, Annabelle maintains ‖the point is, no matter what status or where we are in life, in the end, all flaws and errors disappear in the air‖ What remains is all that is sublime which is love, the gift of life to us. This is truly an inspiring takeaway from Annabelle that truly sheds light on what matters in life. And at this point, having been through all those trials in life, she has shown us what it means to enjoy life for what it really is, and not allowing the smoke of anything else to blind us from the true meaning of life, and that is to love, and to be loved.

BERNADETTE CORONADO The Powers Of A Positive Attitude Empathy, authenticity, and class. These are just a few of the words that define Bernadette Coronado, a woman who knows what she wants. And being in the business of selling luxury bags, she's very good at knowing what other people want as well. She believes in the uniqueness of the individual, and places great importance on this, creating networks of people and interacting with them, learning their stories and using this inspiration to drive her forward. When not focusing on the people who buy her products, she scrutinizes the wares themselves, constantly finding new ways to keep sharp and competitive in today's market. Aside from what she puts on sale for others, Bernadette has her own private collection of bags, shoes, and jewelry items, all surely of decadent quality. But the very cherry on top is her collection of wrist watches. "Mobile phones do not make us punctual, watches do," said Bernadette herself, showcasing a firm sense of promptness. Aside from bestowing a significant form factor, a watch gives the wearer the opportunity to glance down at the accessory. This, according to Bernadette, is a classy way of keeping one's self on time and proper. It also makes a beautiful heirloom. "It is a legacy that passes values to those important to us . . . a timeless piece that allows us to look back to the moments we relish for a lifetime," Bernadette declared.

IMAGESASIA 27

IMAGESASIA 28

When it comes to clothing, she likes to keep it simple. Simple, yet versatile, with the signature air of sophistication she carries with her always. An "everyday flamboyance," she calls it. She isn't brand-snobbish, either; brand-less clothes line her wardrobe as well, but all of them with one thing in common: Quality. She is careful to consider the fabric, the integrity of the seams, and other such details with the same careful analysis she practices in her business. And like with her work, it produces spectacular results.

Success has not only been a life-long dream for Bernadette, it has also been an often-seen reality. She strives for, and achieves, success in her career and in her relationships. But while there is no doubt that she runs her trade with much greatness and passion, she has always sought success most fervently in the thing she values most: Family. Bernadette is a mother of two beautiful children, Chihiro, 13; and Takumi, 11. She, along with her husband, run a household of respect, and contentment. Taking cues from her business practices and ethics, Bernadette also instills an emphasis on the importance of proper relationships with people in and out of the home. And despite accomplishing much without a college degree, and a lot of independence, Bernadette stresses the importance of school with her children. Even in the heat of life’s challenges, they are well equipped: “As parents, we impart the significance of education and the ability to control emotions when unfavorable incidents arise,” she has said. “Education is a pronounced opportunity, but must be lined with perseverance and strategy.” And even when things don’t go the way she expects, she believes in one thing: “When the door closes, God opens a window.” This, inculcated in herself and her children, has gotten then through difficult times.

IMAGESASIA 29 She believes in letting go of bitterness, and letting time bring healing instead. Reflection and courage being key to her philosophy in life, so that one may be able “to discover other exciting avenues and opportunities.” This is her belief, and it has seen to it that success is very much present in her family as well, and it would be very difficult to think otherwise. Even out of the home, her family plays a pivotal role in experiences like traveling. To her, things just aren’t nearly as spectacular or enjoyable without the people she loves. Whether out of the country, or around our very own islands, she has found unforgettable memories and valuable lessons with her family. She recalls one time wherein they travelled to Amanpulo Resort on Pamalican Island, Palawan, after she and her husband read a magazine article on it and were awestruck by its beauty. Aside from being a wonderful place all on its own, it was there that they met the designer of the island resort and future architect of their dream home together. Bernadette has also found much wisdom in her mother-in-law who lives in California.

The 83 year-old lady, she recalls, lives alone but still lives to the fullest despite her age. “I’d like to be her when I get old . . . She inspires me to take good care of myself, and live with productive mind,” Bernadette has said. Other people who have brought inspiration into Bernadette’s life include Oprah Winfrey, with a similar sense of strong will, and resilience, among other traits she greatly admires. Like Oprah, Bernadette strove to make things happen regardless of difficult circumstances, with copious use of her existing talents and adapting to whatever came her way. “In life, behind every success are all the hardships that we’ll have to go through. Patience will be tested. Strength of body and mind will be exhausted. All these helped me rise and I nurture all the memories each day.” She said that it was like this that she had learned the trademark “casual and improvisational style” that has gotten her through so much for so long. And today, tempered by struggle but still warm to others, Bernadette believes that the best way to deal with those around her are to “listen to them with all my heart, empathize genuinely, and act with good purpose.” When Bernadette was awarded Girl Scout of the Year in

IMAGESASIA 30 When Bernadette was awarded Girl Scout of the Year in her youth, she felt that it was this attitude towards life and others that had both gotten her there, and further exemplified the validity of staying true to such values even then. And she is rightly proud of this achievement. Looking back, she felt that the entire being of a Girl Scout; the beliefs, the vision, and truthfulness that came with it, “empowered me to face reality with readiness,” and “helped comprehend what is outside and behind people’s intentions.” And today, as an even more mature and grown-up Bernadette who leads her family by example, she uses these tools and life knowledge to guide her decisions in the best interest of her family. Decisions that, whether for work, or for more personal affairs, always lead back to those she loves most.

That isn’t to say that she doesn’t take care of herself too, however. She keeps herself in excellent shape, and makes time for herself too. Regardless of how busy her schedule is, she makes sure she gets plenty of sleep, and drink lots of water. Health, she says, is a priority. Aside from this she also recommends Yoga, and generally controlling one’s eating, especially for the immensely busy working man or woman. Friends, Bernadette says, are also of great importance. ―I enjoy life by catching up with friends from time to time with a few glasses of wine,‖ she shared. And, to her, being beautiful also means being generally gratified and content. She also still has a lot planned for herself. Aside from staying consistent with her line of work, she wants to travel the world, with her husband and kids of course. The whole way guiding her children to become ―the best version of themselves. . . family oriented and god-fearing individuals.‖ To be able to do all this, she stresses again the importance of staying healthy so that she can do all this to the best of her abilities.

IMAGESASIA 31 A woman married to her work, but absolutely dedicated to her family, Bernadette Coronado personifies the dreams of many young professionals in such a busy, hectic world. A world where time and energy are such precious resources, and we find ourselves constantly struggling where to spend each while enduring the tribulations of life. Bernadette, forever resilient, has broken through such challenges, and used them to fuel her ever-forward momentum, and ever familycentered motivations while remaining very much in touch with herself. ―It is unavoidable to encounter things that we cannot control. But it is certain as well that positive attitude wins over all circumstances. I guess I am gifted with the ability to handle everything with healthy mind and that makes me proud of myself.‖ – Bernadette Coronado
