AVON MORALES
Woman of Substance and Purpose Photographed by HENRY FERRER
One of the biggest misperceptions in modern society is to think that a glamorous woman will surely be wanting in substance. Avon Morales will surely send this mistaken notion off to the pasture. After all, she is a multi-awarded honor graduate, loving mother, highflying executive with a prestigious institution, avid outdoorswoman, civic leader AND a very glamorous woman.
IMAGESASIA 7
IMAGESASIA 8
Her propensity to propel herself to higher heights began in her grade school and high school days in St. Paul College of Paranaque. She was recognized as an active leader in the Supreme Student Council and she graduated with honors, 1st Honorable Mention. She went on to take this to the next level during her college days in De La Salle University. Graduating at the top of her class in AB Psychology, Magna Cum Laude, she also garnered an award as an Outstanding Leader during the graduation ceremony. With such impressive, self-made credentials, it was not surprising that the prestigious Union Bank of the Philippines lost no time in hiring her where she now enjoys a most rewarding career as Vice President for Human Resources. Being in such a lofty position allowed her to begin the process of securing the future of her two very lucky children. At very tender ages, her 15-year old son and 10-year old daughter already have a house and a car each. Avon wants to do no less for her children whose births have been the source of indescribable joy for her and are what she considers to be her 2 most amazing experiences in her life. From the first touch, to the first smile, Avon vividly remembers each moment to this day and fondly recalls how her heart was uplifted and her world suddenly focused on those two little faces smiling up to her.
IMAGESASIA 9
The simplest joys are the
The simplest joys are the most profound. But sometimes it takes other people a lifetime to realize this fact. Avon on the other hand realized this long ago and finds joy in her children and in communing with nature at the summits of the numerous mountains that she has climbed. She has been at the summits of Mt. Pico de Loro, Mt. Daguldol, Mt. Maculot, Mt. Romelo, Mt. Batulao, Mt. Marami, and Mt. Tarak. She scaled each one and arriving at the summit of each one brought overwhelming emotion that defied description. It was almost as if a lifetime of joy was compressed in that moment of arrival where she stood looking at the view most profound. But sometimes it aware of her breathing and while being totally heartbeat. These are the moments that engulf her with an engulfing appreciation for the beauty of life and nature that transcend manmade creations. Make no mistake about it, this lady is well traveled and has, for all intents and purposes, circumnavigated the globe. Despite all this globetrotting, those mountain peak views are the most wonderful travel experiences for her.
IMAGESASIA 10
Her passion for the simple but meaningful is also seen in the items that she collects. One collection is composed of coins from the different countries she has visited. The other is a rock collection from the mountains she has climbed. Such simple items but are so meaningful making them priceless in her eyes. The third collection appeals to her inner sense of whimsy, focusing on home dÊcor or items that are purple or violet. Unlike others who collect items for the sake of collecting, all of her collections are acquired on the basis of being meaningful and significant personally to her. To others a coin is just a currency and a rock is, well, a rock. But their origins give them a meaning that money cannot buy, particularly the rocks where she literally had to climb a mountain to get them. When it comes to fashion, it comes as no surprise that the glamorous Avon has a keen fashion sense. Being immersed in the corporate from the get-go has also influenced her choices, consciously making sure that she errs on the side of overdressed rather than underdressed. Of course bankers, during office hours, maintain a certain conservative aura, but after office hours, Avon prefers a look that is best described as fabulously glamorous. It comes as no surprise then that she has appeared in numerous TV commercials and print advertisements. Amazingly, when pressed for her beauty secrets, Avon shared that her only secret is consuming a tablespoon of Apple Cider with water every night. This 2017, is another milestone in the life of Avon, because this marks the beginning of her term as the President of the Rotary International District 3830 Makati San Miguel. It’s something she looks forward to because it addresses the passion inside her to help others and make a difference in the community and the world.
IMAGESASIA 11
In today’s highly competitive corporate world, it takes more than just academic honors to get to the top positions and keep them. It takes courage and bravery particularly for Avon who was in a world dominated by men. This aspect of her character is a manifestation of her desire to emulate the person she admires the most, St. Joan of Arc. She greatly admired the unwavering faith, determination and courage of St. Joan of Arc to stand by her commitment to and faith in God, even in the face of death. A similar strength of character is partly responsible for Avon’s rise to her current status in the business world.
IMAGESASIA 12
In fact, when asked to describe herself, Avon stated first her unwavering passion to win. Clearly this is what drives her to seek excellence in everything she does. Yet, she also reveals that she has a paradoxical blend of childlike but mature personality given to being quite candid with her feelings and opinions. Integrity is highly important to her and for family and friends; she is very loving, caring and kind. Of course it comes without saying that Avon is the adventurous type and prides herself on being very independent.
You would think that at this point in time, Avon would be content to rest on her laurels. But she wouldn’t dream of kicking back and enjoying the spoils of her hard work. She looks forward to having a hundred more challenges, endeavors and mountain peaks to conquer. If her propensity of overcoming any and all challenges is any indication, then we can be sure that Avon Morales is well on her way to victory and mastery in life.

OLYMPUS EM-1 MARK II
The Olympus EM1 is one such camera and despite being introduced 3 years ago, there is still a high demand for it. But the Olympus enthusiasts have been waiting for the successor since last year and finally, at this years Photokina, Olympus revealed the Olympus EM1-Mark II. One look at the new EM1 and it is very clear that this is one serious camera. There are many buttons and controls in that stylish, technologically advanced body that manages to maintain that classic Olympus look.
In the age of social media and global connectivity, photography and videography has enjoyed a resurgence. For many, taking photos and videos is an essential part of every day whether to document something for sharing on social media, or to simply take a scene or a moment in time and preserve it digitally.
Being one of the proponents of the format, the EM1 Mark II sports a four thirds 20.4 megapixel sensor. Without dealing with the technical aspects of the format, suffice it to say that the size and resolution are more than enough for advanced photographers and even pros.
Thus digital cameras have enjoyed a newfound popularity and it seems that the market has now settled down as far as specifications, form factor and format are concerned. While compact cameras still dominate the mainstream, the flagship mirrorless cameras are the ones on the bucket list of many a photographer.
The EM1 Mark II is a pro level body, something that is immediately apparent when the camera is held. Its not a very large camera like the Canon 7D but there is something about the heft and feel of the camera that puts it on par with larger semi pro models. The EM1 Mark II, like its predecessor, feels and handles very well.
IMAGESASIA 17
Olympus has a way of not making new cameras that immediately sentence their predecessors to the dust bin. Unlike other brands where carrying the older model made one feel deprived, carrying older discontinued Olympus cameras not only felt good, it also attracts a great deal of attention from other photographers. The new EM1 is no exception and it is an upgrade of the previous model.
The EM1 Mark 2 is a camera worthy of being in your bucket or Christmas list. Currently there are problems with the local distributors, but there are many reputable online sellers on Facebook that bring in Olympus cameras. Since this is on my personal bucket list, I will be posting on The Bucket List Facebook page my first hand experience with this camera once I am able to either buy one or get a review unit.
One stand out in the lineup is the new Oyster Perpetual Daytona Cosmograph. Its a chronograph that oozes style and functionality. This new version features 904L steel along with a Monobloc Cerachrom Bezel.
ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA Watches are different things to different people. For some people, watches are a mere instrument to tell time, while for others its a status symbol. It is indisputable that wearing a Rolex is a sign that you have arrived. But it is actually more than that because in this world of economic uncertainties. watches are considered investments as well and the Rolex brand is one of the most popular investments. The 2016 lineup of Rolex continues the tradition of making watches that are immediately identifiable as a Rolex.
Any update of the 1963 model, the Daytona named after one of the most famous racetracks in the world, is an icon in the world of motorsport.
IMAGESASIA 18
The Daytona comes in two versions, both version look awesome making it the epitome about the agony of choice.
ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL LADY – DATEJUST 28
The Lady Datejust 28 exudes prestige and elegance. Like the Daytona, this is an update of a classic Rolex that was launched in 1945.
The women’s version was first appeared in the 1950s and was a big hit. Finally, women could wear the timeless elegance and functionality in dainty size perfect for the smaller wrist of ladies.
IMAGESASIA 19
Both of these 2016 models are strongly rooted in history. Despite the updates, they keep that timeless Rolex look and are destined to be high value collectibles in the future.

CHRISTOPHER MATHEW PARAZ Model Citizen of the World Photographed by RONIN URBINA
When Christopher was asked to describe himself as a person, he replied that it was a difficult question, then he proceeded, attempting to do so. It then becomes clear why it was not an easy task. Christopher is quite a complex person who can readily take on different roles should the situation call for them. The first impression is that he is a sociable person who is easy to get along with. But he can be both brutally frank or sensitively honest which is no mean feat. He also considers himself to be a rational, practical thinker who can also be extremely emotional about things he is passionate about. At the end of the day, he sees himself as easy going, easily amused and easy to please. His personality is an eclectic mix of pragmatism and passion that is seldom found in his generation. But then again, not everyone in his generation graduated with honors either but he did, having graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines as a salutatorian of his graduating class in Business Administration
IMAGESASIA 23
IMAGESASIA 24
This pragmatic approach to life is likewise reflected in his aversion to collecting objects, preferring to acquire only those items that are practical. In fact, he deliberately makes it a point to be frugal, practical and taking a minimalist approach to life. This attitude manifests itself in his fashion choices which he describes as classically practical. This would mean dressing up in a suit or jacket for hotel functions or conferences and a collared shirt and jeans for meetings in the Metro. Simple, practical yet sensibly fashionable. While being minimalist in most areas is his goal, living in the digital age requires carrying around what is considered the basic toolkit which includes a cell phone, camera and a laptop. The camera deserves special mention because he is a budding photographer and derives a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment from the act of taking photos and capturing memories. Christopher considers each experience of his life as important. Boring or spectacular, all of his experiences in life happen for a reason and provides a lesson for him. He believes that while we may not comprehend at the moment why certain things had to occur, in time it will become clear that they were indeed a necessary part in order to make the future happen. For Christopher, the best moments are yet to come and each day of his life is better than the last.
IMAGESASIA 25
A modest person at heart, despite numerous accomplishments, he beliefs that he has not accomplished much yet. At this point of his life, he has merely mastered the intricate navigation required in corporate life. He has only been instrumental in starting up a business and building a brand from the ground up. Previously employed in Nestle, Christopher is now the sales and marketing manager for Nipa Brew Craft Beers which is a leader in the craft beer industry in the Philippines.
Yes, this young man clearly has set the bar high for himself because what he has “only accomplished to this date, can be the greatest accomplishments for many people. Its a refection of his zest for life, the excitement of waiting for what the next day will bring, that leads Christopher feel this way. Life for him is dynamic and his life story continues to unfold as he writes it day by day. Its a very admirable approach to life that more people should seek to emulate.
IMAGESASIA 26
Not one to follow the herd, Christopher believes that one should do what makes you happy, not allowing oneself to be forced into a situation because of peer or group pressure. Its an attitude that is reflected in the people he looks up to and admires the most, namely Elon Musk and Bill Gates. Aside from being trailblazers, both Musk and Gates give back immensely to the world by way of funding research and development projects that seek to solve some of the biggest problems confronting the world today. While travel and frugality normally don't go together, Christopher’s involvement in Dole, Nestle and now Nipa have given him the chance to travel around the Philippines for work. These destinations include Butuan, Mindanao, Iloilo and Western Visayas where he was exposed to different cultures while dealing with living alone away from friends and family for extended periods of time. He values this time of his life because it also taught him a lot about himself. Rather than impose a stringent diet and regiment for himself, Christopher who admits to a love for eating, prefers to live a life of balance. Allowing for indulgence but balancing it out with exercise and other healthy practices. When asked about the secret to his good looks, Christopher said that your external looks are a reflection of your inner self. A miserable person would most definitely be less attractive than the happy person who seems to have an attractive glow around them. While his life story unfolds, directed towards his business goals, Christopher has also set a couple of other roles that he would like to explore as he journeys through life. This include counseling, mentoring which involves activities he loves to indulge in such as providing advice and help to those in need. Christopher truly is a good son, good friend and all around good guy. A true model citizen of the world.

Spread out over 34 hectares of prime Baguio land, adjacent to John Hay, the Baguio Country Club is the place to be in Baguio. There is hardly any tourist, local or international, who has been to Baguio without encountering the Baguio Country Club.
Whether one passes by enroute to John Hay or Minesview, or hears about it from other people, Baguio Country Club is an institution, an integral part of Baguio. It is in fact, much more than that, having been declared a national heritage in 2005 when the BCC turned 100 years old. Now there is even more reason to rejoice for Baguio residents, Baguio Country Club members and friends. The Department of Tourism, after careful evaluation and monitoring, awarded the BCC, formerly a Triple A Resort, a much coveted 5 Star Status. It is not only the first, but is the only 5-star Mountain Resort in the whole Philippines. Several years ago, in an effort to bring up their ratings to International standards, the Department of Tourism released new guidelines for the accreditation and rating of resorts and hotels. In connection with this, Baguio Country Club and most other establishments in the Philippines underwent extensive evaluation.
The Standards Monitoring and Enforcement Division of the Department of Tourism which is the body tasked with evaluation and accreditation noted that the team effort of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Baguio Country Club were of such magnitude that they exceeded, by a substantial margin, the mandatory requirements for a five-star property. It is a well deserved honor indeed.

BCC General Manager Anthony de Leon, attributed this notable and soughtafter breakthrough to the assertive and constant upgrading and development of the Club’s luxury facilities. While Raisin bread remains the star of the show, there are a lot of yummy pastries and cakes available. The famous Baguio Country Club Raisin Bread was born from the recipe of a previous General Manager of the Club, the late Mrs. Kate Reed Crosby. She was the GM of the BCC from 1955 to 1968. W. C. Forbes Ballroom is considered one of the best ballrooms located outside Metro Manila. It is the premiere and most sought after venue in Baguio Country Club. Favored by the crème de la crème of high society from the highlands and lowlands. Utilizing the finest materials to bring to life its grandiose design, the integration of classic interior design elements with elegant lighting fixtures resulted in a most beautiful place that is unequalled in the City of Pines. The ballroom is named after Governor General William Cameron Forbes. Ambassador Francisco V. del Rosario Jr. Hall is one of the most used for these corporate functions. It is quite fitting that the hall, named after the highly distinguished and multiawarded Ambassador Francisco del Rosario Jr., remains the first choice of companies and organizations. Ambassador del Rosario used to be a board member of the Club and has made numerous, invaluable contributions that has been instrumental in making the Club the prestigious institution it is today. President’s Room room has served as the boardroom away from home of countless corporations. Being the Summer Capital of the Philippines, the Supreme Court holds sessions in Baguio during summer. By the same token, the President’s Room gives the corporate world a venue to conduct business and hold meetings away from the heat of the Metro. Finished with simple but elegant furnishings, the size of this room is in fact well within the usual average size of corporate conference rooms with a sweeping view of the golf course, the weary executive only needs to lift his eyes to the windows in order to refresh his mind. Being an outdoor function area, its availability is quite dependent on the weather but between the awesome views and the splendor of the garden, one would be hard put to find a more idyllic wedding venue. CAMILLE AGBAYANI
Failure is not an option Photographed by TIFFANY CHUNG
Driven and strong willed women are few and far between in our society, even today. Camille Agbayani however is representative of this group. But her mission statement in life belies the heart of the woman behind the façade of steel. “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; with utmost passion, compassion, sense of humor, and healthy lifestyle. I advocate unleashing inner beauty and letting them shine. It is about giving our best to help others attain their desired expectation thus reinforcing self-confidence. My way of giving back for all the graces I have received from our Almighty”. Clearly, she is all strength, but she is all heart as well.
IMAGESASIA 36
A woman who graduated with Honors and Valedictorian in her Grade School and High School. A proud academic scholar all throughout her College, no doubt, that even from the beginning Camille would blossom into a successful personality. Having taken three degrees in college says it all. She attained a degree in the following fields: Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design. Her perseverance, intelligence and dedication brought her to even more achievements. In 1987, Camille became the President of KANEHIN CORPORATION. A Property and Business Management Consultancy here in the Philippines. In 2010, Camille opened her doors to another venture where she can express her passion for beauty and making a difference to those around her. To unleash their inner beauty and let them shine as well. This time her degree in medical field has taken place. She put up an Aesthetic and Wellness Center in Los Angeles, California. Camille stood as the Enterpreneur Managing Director/Owner of L’AURA WELLNESS CLINIC, LLC. She handles the marketing and operations area. This clinic was co-founded by Dr. John L. Pinches who is a trained cosmetic physician for Smartlipo Triplex, dermal fillers and botox injections. L’AURA Wellness Clinic is known to be one of the most highly recommended Aesthetic and Wellness Centers in LA. Their noninvasive techniques in facial and body contour is rated first-class.
Being a self-driven individual that she is, Camille extended her business empire in 2014 to opening up her own TLC Residences, LLC and Absolute Hospice, LLC in California. These institutions cater to elderly people who need assistance with everyday life, to provide them with board and care; and at the same time, attending to their emotional and spiritual needs. Thus, providing Camille a portal to do her mission in life about giving her best in helping others, a way for her to give back for all the graces she has received from Our Almighty. All the said businesses are still under her belt up to this day. She considers this as her greatest achievement in life. To learn to be independent and self-reliant. Camille is living up to her principle that “Failure is not an option.”
IMAGESASIA 37
It’s not a surprise where Camille’s strong-willed attitude in business comes from. She is surrounded by her family who are also business oriented. They have been running their own Real Estate and business consultancy firm for 28 years now. Her eldest sister is an entrepreneur while her 2nd sister is a corporate lawyer. His brother holds a managerial rank in the macro corporate world. The business line continues down to Camille’s 26 year’s old son, who is now involved in their family business and has also shown inclination in the stock brokerage area. While her younger son, 20 years old, is a golfer who is aiming to win in the pro golf tournament. With such accomplishments, Camille deserves to enjoy life. She may be at ease with her simple lifestyle in the US but she keeps coming back to Manila to enjoy the benefits of just lazing around and having people to do stuff for her, maids to take care of the household chores and a driver to bring her around the city. It is here in Manila where she gets a taste of heaven. Another thing where Camille finds excitement is when she attends parties of the Philippine high society world. Mingling with people of prominent stature as she is, dressing up and just being pretty tickles her spine. Camille’s fashion sense is on a trendy side, however, keeps her classic taste. She loves collecting fine jewelries of Tiffany, watches and accessories by Cartier and scarves by Hermes. She takes pleasure in seeing famous arts in Louve and Rijsk Museums. Meeting and encountering various ethnicities with diversified culture is always considered a memorable experience for Camille.
”
Despite her busy schedule, Camille advocates healthy well-being. She’s doing this not just because she owes it to herself but for her two sons and granddaughter with whom she feels so blessed. To keep herself in shape and maintain her beauty, she strictly watches her diet. Cravings for unhealthy food must be substituted to that of healthy ones. She practices lifestyle modification, no smoking and less alcohol intake. Giving her body enough shut eye is joy in itself. Regular exercise is a must for her to stay fit and vibrant. For her youthful glow, she shared that “it is vital to use the right skin care and that water base products are always better.” Along with her beauty regimen, her secret to her healthy and supple skin is taking nutritional supplements like Fountain of youth Hr, glutathione Vit C e B12 (IV) every month.
IMAGESASIA 38
Knowing now her formula to a dynamic life and remarkable beauty, mentioning the former First Lady, Mrs. Imelda Marcos as one of the notable figures she admires the most, didn’t come as a surprise. The resemblance is apparent being both classically beautiful and resilient. Camille is impressed by Mrs. Marcos vivid memory and grace. She also looks up to her sister Atty. Manette Agbayani for her ageless beauty and wit. If you think that life goals end here for Camille, being an accomplished businesswoman who emerged victoriously through many challenges, she still sees a long road ahead of her. Camille is looking towards her dream of owning an Educational Institution and having a College Scholarship Foundation for intelligent students who cannot afford to go to college. Another goal of her is to have a World Class Retirement Home to provide a very comfortable and happy community for the elders. Camille Agbayani is truly an inspiration for young women out there. A woman of action who exudes beauty from within; A go-getter with a heart for others. For nothing can stop her in making her dreams come to reality. As her philosophy goes “Be passionate in everything you do and give your best shot! And watch your dreams unfold in front of you. ”

Founded in March 1941, Philippine Airlines was the first Asian airline to cross the Pacific on July 31, 1946 and the first Southeast Asian airline to fly to Europe on May 3, 1947. Aside from its domestic operations, it also had regional flights to Taipei, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Hongkong, and many other cities in the region added to its roster through the years. In 1971, it extended its Australian operations from Sydney to Melbourne. PAL was the first Asian airline to fly to China. It was also the first airline to be honored by Les Chaines de Rotisseurs, an ancient order of gourmets with an award for inflight cuisine in 1979. Aspiring pilots from budding Asian airlines trained in simulators under PAL pilot trainers, known for their excellence. That reputation has endured through the years. Cabin crews still undergo rigorous training up to this day. And that certainly has created a bond of kinship among those who had to undergo that "baptism by fire." Philippine Airlines has changed ownership through the years - from its founder Andres Soriano to the Benigno Toda days when I joined, to GSIS upon its nationalization, and then the Lucio Tan Group to San Miguel Corporation and back. But no matter the changes in management and the struggles that went with them, many who worked with PAL remain very much of a family today. More than 600 guests from all over the world joined the global reunion gathering PAL ex personnel from all the departments held at the Fiesta Pavillion of the Manila Hotel recently. They tagged the reunion as “PAL’s Latin Night”.

Latin Night is sponsored by the Association of Former Flight Attendants of Philippine Airlines for the benefit of Tahanan Ni Maria, a home for the aged in Carmona, Cavite. Naty Crame Rogers 94 years old, who began flying in 1946, came and performed a salsa number. It was a great night of bonding once more, highlighted by a grand dinner, dance, a fashion show of PAL uniforms through the years and raffle of wonderful prizes.

Her children are following in her footsteps and helping out in the business which is a dream come true for Myrna. Like their mother, her two daughters are achievers and have garnered multiple academic awards including most Outstanding students in their batch and graduating with honors as Valedictorians. Her daughter Lisa graduated from the Wharton School of Business, Summa Cum Laude while daughter Jane graduated 2nd Honor of her MBA class in the University of the Philippines. One would expect Myrna to be well travelled and she is, singling out Moscow, Barcelona, Austria, Italy and the Canadian Rockies as among her favorites. But for her, the most exciting travel experience by far is her trip to Batanes Island where she was treated to the site of flying fish and a bountifull fish market. She loved the authenticity of the Islands culture and basked in the natural beauty of the Batanes scenery. The Balisin Island is also one of her favorite vacation site. The rigors of hard work agree well with Myrna and despite all her activities, she remains youthful, glamorous and beautiful. When asked about her beauty secrets, she reveals that she takes Baby Mama Tea which is an organic blend which keeps her fit and energetic. She also takes Kalamansi every morning, upon waking up and the organic Grace Cosmetics , aloe vera organic based for her skincare. As for glamor, Myrna eschews trendy and fashionable clothes that allows her to mix and match and accessorize . to come up with her unique elegant and fashionable look.
Myrna looks forward to the next episode of her life where she sees herself preaching and bringing people closer to God. In her communion with Him, she feels that this is what God wants her to do and she is more than equal to the task. She believed that she is a servant to everyone and need to do more for humankind.
IMAGESASIA 39
Lord when he wakes her at 3AM. In these moments, He guides her and answers her questions through the Bible. Her devotion and discipleship to the Lord has given her a closeness to Him that defies explanation. Myrna is likewise devoted to Mama Mary and shares that the miracles that have occurred in her life through this devotion exceeds ones imagination and she hopes to share this with others someday in order to bring people closer to God. Her family, especially her daughters and grandchildren are the apple of her eye and she is most proud of them. She also has great pride in building the Shrine of The Virgin of Visitation which is her project with the Mama Mary of Piat Foundation. Last and most certainly not the least, she is proud of her friends and employees who have rallied behind her and offers her accomplishments and awards to serve as an inspiration for their own lives. Myrna shares this as her guiding principle in life: “I have dedicated myself to God, to my Countrymen, to my Family and to women and children of the world. It has always been less for myself but more for others. Yet she finds that she ends up with far more at the end of the day.
IMAGESASIA 38
Myrna credits her phenomenal success to her deep devotion to God and a genuine concern for all her employees and the women and children of our country. A deeply religious person, Myrna has gone into helping others with the same zeal she had for building her business empire. She has founded many organizations such as the Philippine Federation of Local Council of Women, the Filipino Chinese Federation of Business and Professional Women of the Philippines. the Pearl S. Buck Foundation of the Philippines among others. She was recognized nationally and globally, one of her prestigious award is the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year given by the Global Summit of Women in Washington DC, this led for President Gloria Arroyo to give her the Presidential Merit award. She was also recognized globally as one of the 100 Most Influential Women in the world in 2015. Her other awards include the Ernst and Young Award, the Bossing Award, the Go Negosyo award and many more.
Alongside her business success, Myrna has been a responsible daughter, an understanding wife and devoted mother. she got married at 19, while in second year college and pursue her MBA while selling merchandise such as blouses and melamine ware as a micro entrepreneur while she was pregnant. She was able to see all these activities to a very fruitful end having grown her business into a large corporation employing more than 1,500 people.
Some might think that Myrna is all work and no play but that could be no farther from the truth. This classy lady is fashion conscious and while Christian Lacroix, she prefers to blaze her own fashion style. Myrna flatly refuses to follow one style and for her, its all about being different, adventurous and unpredictable in her choice of fashion. Hence collecting for and augmenting her fashion wardrobe provides her with great satisfaction. Myrna also loves collecting accessories, paintings and sculptures. She also derives great pleasure from her Swarovski collection, all of which provide her with respite from her busy schedule. Despite all her successes in life, the most memorable experience for Myrna is that of her communion with the

Just how successful is Myrna Tang Yao? Have you ever heard of Goodyear tires? Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher Price? Chicco, Megablock and Vtech to name just a few? Well Myrna is responsible for bringing them here to the Philippines and growing them into the successful and well established brands known to children and parents. Richprime Global Inc. and Richwell Trading Corporation are just two of the companies that import many of these products which Myrna is the Founder and CEO.But these two companies are not the start of the rise in business for Myrna. It began in 1974 when she joined her father’s commodity trading business after graduating from UE with an MBA. In two years, Myrna propelled their business into the top 350 corporations in the Philippines under Uniphil Marketing Corporation. During this time also, she and her father built the 2 highest buildings in Chinatown in the 90s. But Myrna was just getting warmed up because in 1979, she founded Richwell Trading Corporation and distributed Goodyear tires making a mark as the only woman in the tire business during that time. There were Firestone and BF Goodrich in the market as well but Goodyear has totally outclassed these two rivals and remains as one of the key players in the tire market. When she reached the pinnacle of tire distribution after becoming the number 1 dealer in a mere 2 years in the 80s, Myrna began looking for other business opportunities. Her love of children led her to Mattel which was operating a plant then in the Philippines for the production of Barbie dolls. Myrna courageously went from tires to toys, once again pioneering the toy market in just a few years. To this day, more than 50% of the Branded toys in the Philippine market are supplied by Richprime Global Inc. and Europlay Distributor Company. She is truly the epitome of how being a visionary, combined with strategic and perseverance can result in great success. She has achieved all this while taking care of her four children and managing her employees. It comes as no surprise that the heroes and people she admires in life include Winston Churchill, Mahatma Ghandi, Pope Francis and Mother Teresa. All of them are people with great character and big hearts with much wisdom.

Entrepreneur par excellence Photographed by HENRY FERRER
For most people, what they are destined to become comes after college, sometimes even much later in life where some successful people start their careers after age 50. Then there are the rare persons that you can see from way off, where they are headed. Myrna Tang Yao is such a person, clearly destined for entrepreneurial greatness, she began at the tender age of 10 selling earrings to her classmates. Then at 13, she went into the tutoring business and from then on it was a series of one successful enterprise after another.
IMAGESASIA 35
It is often quite crowded but what keeps us going there for dine in is their excellent coolers especially the cucumber lemonade version for only P45 and it comes in a HUGE glass. It’s a healthy drink that makes one feel less guilty about indulging. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that for many people, this writer included, Boyongs provide excellent comfort food at a very down to earth price. It’s no wonder that it has grown into the burger institution that it is today. Boyong’s – Chef B’s Grilled Burger #15 E. Dela Paz Street, San Roque, Marikina Phone +632 682 0403
It’s the true steak sandwich as far as this writer is concerned. I couldn’t help comparing though the way these two outlets deal with condiments which are important to the burger connoisseur. Boyongs, despite their lower price is much more generous because in Snack Shack they serve ketchup and mustard only on demand which they serve in small paper cups. I hope that they decide to change their policy and revert back to condiments on the table.
About 3 kilometers away from Boyong is the Snack Shack. Unlike Boyongs which is a single restaurant, the Snack Shack has 2 other branches in Quezon City. Like Boyongs, it has a loyal following and they have been known to run out of burgers too. While Boyongs is an institution in Marikina, Snack Shack is an institution in UP which is where one of their QC branches is located. Snack Shack is open Mondays to Sundays from 1130 am to 9pm. Since they grill burgers only upon ordering, its best to call ahead if you’re particularly hungry.
Their quarter pounder is P80, while their half pounder with double cheese is P155. While their prices are very reasonable, they are significantly higher than Boyongs which is quite the bargain. Remember I said that Boyongs is what Jollibee should have been? Well the Snack Shack is what McDonalds should have been. Their patty is a pure beef one and to say that it smells and tastes like a good ground up steak is no exaggeration. It is merely the most accurate way of describing the Snack Shack burger.
Speaking of tables, Snack Shack, among all its outlets is more of a take out place rather than an eat in place. The tables are quite narrow and there are very few. In fact, when I am in a Snack Shack mood, I prefer to order for take out then I buy soda somewhere and park somewhere to eat in the car. Much comfier for me, though the last time we ate in the Snack Shack, we did eat there. What I liked about it was that it was less congested with people compared to Boyongs. This tale of two burgers is not a contest but a story about two excellent executions of the basic burge. I cannot, for the life of me, say that one is better than the other. Its more accurate to say that one is either in a Boyongs or Snack Shack mood because when I eat at one outlet, I can’t help reminiscing about the other. Such is the equal match up between the two. Burgers are comfort foods for many folks including myself. I’ve tasted Burger Machine, Tropical Hut, Katas Burger, Wham, Big Better Burgers, 8 Cuts, Brothers Burger, Pancake House, Makati Supermarket and many others including those in several hotels in Metro Manila. So I can confidently state that these 2 burgers stand head and shoulders above the rest in the sea of basic burgers.

IMAGESASIA 34 Welcome to the maiden column of The Gastronaut Diaries. As defined by the Wiktionary gastronaut (plural gastronauts) A person with a keen appreciation for food. [quotations ▼] A person whose whole focus is narrowly directed to the enjoyment of fine food. In this column it will be all about great food whether in the Metro, the Philippines and around the world, the focus would be on gastronomical adventures.
By ALEXIS CRUZ
My column is on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/The-Gastronaut-Diaries930381897074325/
The Tale of Two Burgers Hamburgers are probably one of the most popular sanwiches in the world. From the burger stand that sells them for an unbelievable “buy 1 take 1” for just P22.50, to the world’s most expensive burger that is priced at a whopping US$1,768 (about 86, 000 pesos), there’s a burger for every pocket and taste. But in this column, we go back to the roots of the basic burger and look at 2 burger shops that deliver what are arguably the best “back to basics” burger. Both of these restaurants are located in Marikina City which is fast becoming a foodie go to place where prices are generally much lower compared to other cities of Metro Manila.
Now on to the burger. Boyongs serves several types of burgers: grilled burger (P35), double burger (P70) and half pounder (P100). We ordered the double burger and the half pounder. My personal favorite is the double burger only because I usually order 2 and since its much more than a quarter pounder, I get more than a half pounds’ worth. The all beef patties are the same and they differ only in the size. This is what can be callled the ultimate version of the basic Filipino style burger. The reason why Jollibee always beats McDonalds in the Philippines is because of what they call “langhap sarap” and the tasty patty which is a revelation compared to the Mcdonalds burger.
Boyong’s – Chef B’s Grilled Burgers is practically an institution in Marikina. They are open Monday to Saturday, from 1pm to 10pm only. We have been to this place several times and it was always packed, rain or shine. There are many other dishes in Boyong like their pasta. The Seafood Aioli is pictured here and its not only delicious, but great value for money as well. But this is a story about burgers so we’ll save the other dishes for another day.
This is what Boyongs has in spades. It is a much tastier burger than Jollibee and that is saying a lot. The demand for the burgers is such that they sometimes run out of burgers. Basically, I can say that Boyongs is what Jollibee burger should have been. Clearly there are many who agree with me since there is a constant stream of people going into Boyongs whether to eat there or to take out. Boyongs is a very simple space which is non-airconditioned and very utilitarian. But service is fast, polite and they are quite generous with ketchup (tomato, no less) and mustard, as well as napkins.

Like true artists, it is certain that Renny will never stop creating, expressing her inner self through her various talents. Perhaps it will be more sublime paintings, her own line of fashionwear, signature interiors or even create structures. The only thing for sure is that Renny Harman is unstoppable and her many friends and admirers the world over are waiting with bated breath for what she will create next.
Location: THE BULB STUDIOS Makati City
IMAGESASIA 31
There is another saying that “the apple does not fall too far from the tree and this is something Renny is extremely thankful for. Her mother is a strong influence on her, both in her compassion for those in need, and her artistic side as well. It is most certain too, that like their doting mother, her own two children will in time make their own marks in this world. Not one to be content with merely dabbling in her interests, Renny established herself as an artist and painter par excellence, when she staged a one-woman exhibit of her different artworks. Choosing no less than the Shangri-La in Jakarta, Indonesia, guests were treated to her Impressionist style of art, utilizing not just oils on canvass but other medium as well. As a tribute to her native countrys handiwork, she also put on display her rendition of traditional Indonesian costumes created with very detailed and intricate beadwork. It was a veritable one woman tour de force of creativity and heart inspired works of art that was a tribute to her mother’s and her own artistry. She has even extended her creativity and art to fashion and has created many of her gowns and dresses. This fusion of her creations, inspired by her inner beauty and her outer beauty has made her stand out even amidst a sea of glamorous people.
IMAGESASIA 30
Her beauty was celebrated long before her art came to the forefront of her activities. In the mid 70s, Renny was crowned Ms. Indonesia and went on to represent her country in Miss Asia Pacific, 1976. As an ambassadress of her country in the pageant, her beauty shone brightly then as it continues to do so now. To this day, she turns heads wherever she goes. Renny is the perfect counterpoint to the saying “beauty is only skin deep” because her inner beauty as a person surpasses her outer beauty. She has so graciously shared a big part of herself to various socio economic projects in the Philippines which she considers her second home. Despite the fact that she is an Indonesian by birth, Renny has contributed so much to a wide array of less fortunate Filipinos not only as a President of Rotary Club International, but in her own personal capacity as well. Truly, this lady has a big heart. Between her projects, beauty title and art, Renny has achieved more than most people, but there’s more to this glamorous lady. She is in fact, a savvy business woman who heads her familys trading business which in itself is doing splendidly. She is also an architect, painter and interior designer by education. Her impressive roster of degrees show that her choice of education is the clearest indicator of what her true inclinations are which is clearly towards art, designing and creating.

A glimpse at the art of Renny Harman is to gaze upon the beauty of the artist herself. Somehow, when she lays paint to canvas it as though her inner and outer beauty are rendered in the creation of shapes and colors, fusing. The results are her artworks that has enamoured those who have seen them and earned her the accolades of art critics.

IMAGESASIA 18 After his very successful business venture in Canada, Willem felt the need to move to another part of the world that has not benefitted from his musical artistry and business acumen. This is what brought him to Manila, Philippines where he is not a stranger to the patrons of the arts here who were understandably excited by his arrival.
Willem promptly established Manila Pianos Inc specializes in the remanufacturing of Steinway,Bosendorfer, Bechstein and other prestigious brands. He also created pianos.ph and organs.ph to market pianos and organs to the Philippine market. Manila Pianos Inc held its grand opening on September 6, 2014 , an event that was well attended by music lovers and Manilas elite. Among the over 300 guests who came for the opening were Madame Elenita Binay, Madame Imelda Marcos, Former Ilocos Governor Chavit Singson, Ms. Cory Quirino, Dr Ingrid Sala Santamaria, the Manila Symphony Orchestra, members of the Piano Teachers Guild of the Philippines among others. The event culminated in a performance by the Manila Symphony Orchestra conducted by no less than Willem Van Suijdam. It was a serendipitious night that will linger in the memories of all those who attended. It seems that wherever Willem goes, awards and recognition follows. After just about a year of operation, Willem and Pianos.ph were awarded the highly coveted BID GOLD awards International Arch of Europe 2015 in recognition of their contributions to leadership, quality and excellence in the field of arts and culture. The Business Initiatives Directions or BID Gold awards rank among the 5 most prestigious awards in the whole world. In 2014, Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton were given this award so Willem is in decidedly good company. The classical music scene in general as well as the piano and organ players of the Philippines have begun to benefit from the influx of high quality but affordable instruments courtesy of Pianos.ph and Organs.ph. Without a doubt, with Willem in the country, music here will rise to a new level of competence that will put Willem and the Philippines squarely in the musical worlds map.
IMAGESASIA 17
Gina Ronquillo and Willem Van Suijdam
His deep love for music also compelled Willem to immerse himself deeply in the performance side of music and he created a name for himself in Canada which led to his being recognized and awarded the Arts Acclaim Award from the city of Brampton which was his home city. Brampton is a city renowned for being home to artists from various genres so it was a distinct honor for Willem to be recognized amidst the sea of talents that existed in Brampton. On the other hand, it was quite the honor as well for Brampton that a person, so distinguished and recognized as Willem lived there as well. After all, the musical achievements of Willem in Canada are very impressive indeed. The Liberation Choir in Canada was founded by Willem and he served as their conductor for 15 years. Under his tutelage, the Liberation Choir went on to become one of Canada’s foremost choirs with a long string of sold out concerts all across 2 continents. They were a raging success in the USA, Europe and Canada. As a musical director, Willem directed several concerts in the prestigous and internationally acclaimed Hamilton Place theater in Ontario, Canada. These were all sold out and were feted by renowned musical critics. But the success of the over 200-member Liberation Choir under Willem did not stop at concerts. They also appeared in several TV specials created for 100 Huntley Street which is known to be not only the longest running daily television show in Canada, but it is considered the 6th longest running daily television show in the world. It first aired in June of 1977 and is still running today. 100 Huntley Street provides the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it was quite an experience for Willem and the Liberation Choir. Willem also collaborated with Simon Irving for a series of concerts of the Liberation Choir with the highly acclaimed Guelph Symphony Orchestra based in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. After this, the Liberation Choir went on 4 wildly succesful European tours and to this day, it is recognized to be one of the most popular and successful Christian choirs to ever come out of Canada.

Clearly then Willem van Suijdam has probably never worked a day in his life. He has loved music all his life. When he was just 18, he entered the Royal Conservatory in Zwolle, Netherlands where he studied classical organ, conducting and piano until 1979. Despite undergoing extensive education here, Willem felt in his heart that he wanted to learn more and went to the Royal Conservatories of Hilversum and Alkmaar to take jazz and theater organ. Right after this, Netherland born Willem left his native land to spend the next 6 years in Paris, training in Bach interpretation under renowned organist Jean Guillou.
As a result of all this training and love for music, Willem became a celebrated concert pianist, organist and conductor. At a young age, he already had several recordings with several currently being sold online. He has his own radio channel on www.mp3.com and to this day, people are looking for, and playing his works. He immigrated to Canada from Holland in the Netherlands in 1986. It was here that he decided to setup his very first organ store in 1989. Because of his love for playing the organ and his innate technical expertise, his organ store flourished and he became well known for his uncanny knowledge about organ quality and value. Soon, organ committees were seeking his advice and his store became the source for pipe organs and digital organs. He went on to open a piano store called Pianohouse Burlington Inc which went on to become a rousing success. He owned it until 2009 after which he moved on to create a new business.

IMAGESASIA 12 She is dedicated to two things in her life. One is her family and the other is work. She states that she lives and breathes family and business, something that is proven by her success at both. For her, the simple joys of life such as impromptu get togethers, trips and dinners comprise a life, lived to the fullest. One would this hard to believe but Lynette maintains her gorgeous looks with a simple beauty regimen that revolves mostly around Japanese skin care products, specifically a moisturizer and an anti-aging cream. Despite her love for food and the absence of exercise, Lynette is still able to maintain her slim figure due to her busy and active lifestyle. At the end of the day, in the midst of her diverse interests and activities, Lynette considers love, peace and happiness with those who matter most in her life as her ultimate goal.

For Lynette, success is not measured in monetary or material terms. For her, happiness and success are not tangible objects, but rather things that are felt inside, in one’s heart. True happiness relies on a balanced life where one thing must be sacrificed for the sake of the other. An excess of riches at the expense of other things in life does not bring true happiness. She believes that balance and a little bit of everything good and meaningful completes her life. For her, it’s simply a little of love, time, wealth, career and a few other things. She looks up to Lady Diana and Mother Teresa for their passion and love for the poor. Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Onassis are her models for style and elegance. She admires John F. Kennedy his great leadership abilities. Lynette got bulk of her education in the province, having attended St. Louis School in Nueva Vizcaya. After high school, she went on to college at Maryknoll College in Loyola Heights, graduating with a degree in Communication Arts in 1985.

She is most proud of her 3 grown children, raising them to live a life of simplicity, remaining down to earth despite being raised amidst the trappings of an affluent life. She strongly emphasizes the value of hard work and responsibility, training her children to be self-reliant and to not rely on their parents to get ahead in life. Her children were given a good education and once they are done with school, they are on their own.

Despite her varied entrepreneurial endeavors, there is something that has been her main interest for several decades already. This is interior design which has been her passion ever since she got married in 1990. It began when she started fixing up her own place, sourcing materials for home items and her interest has never waned since then. Local destinations are not ignored at the expense of globetrotting. She travels to Boracay for the white sands, food and nightlife. Bohol and Bicol are prized destinations for beaches and beautiful resorts. If she has only a day or weekend to spare, they would hie off to Tagaytay, Subic and Batangas which are also her favorite venues for reunions or when she just wants to drop everything and get away from it all. A long running collection of Lynette’s are magnets and coffee table books from and about the countries she has visited through the years. Lately she has gotten involved in art collection as well, collecting sculptures from noted Filipino artists. In fashion, Lynette considers her style to be simple but elegant. Leaning more towards the classic designs, she favors solid, neutral colors and prints, especially black. She veers away from big bold prints as well as light colored clothes because she feels they are unflattering to her though we find it hard to believe that such a thing could happen to a beauty such as Lynette. For her daily wear, she’s partial to flats and only wears stilettos and high heels when wearing gowns and cocktail dresses.

A businesswoman at heart, Lynette who’s now 52 years old, went into business when she was 21 and never looked back. She was into RTW in the late 80s, selling imported clothes from HK at the Virra Mall. In the 90s she ventured into buying and selling real estate and jewelries, businesses that she maintains to this day. In the year 2000, she also ventured into selling artificial flowers and vases from HK and Thailand, in kiosks inside SM. Today, aside from being broker, selling real estate and jewelry sales. Lynette is currently in the trading business, specifically jewelry, catering to a select clientele. This requires quite a bit of traveling, one of Lynette’s favorite activities, to jewelry fairs and other destinations which allows her to indulge in her other favorite activity, dining.
Because traveling is her great passion Lynette has a come up with her go to list as far as travel destinations are concerned. Chicago is her go to place for architecture and skyscrapers, while New York is for musicals. California is her destination for outlet shopping while Europe provides her with a cultural experience, thru its beautiful scenery, landscapes and buildings. Asia for her is where she indulges her love for food and is also where she conducts a big portion of her business and shopping.
